DIRECTORS WELCOME Welcome to Bello Winter Music 2019, a 4 day escape from everyday ho-hum, where music is the inspiration and good times are guaranteed. With over 60 musical groups descending on the tiny riverside town, the weekend is a celebration of amazing music, and of Bellingen itself. Coming direct from Chicago for their first Australian tour, retro queen Tammi Savoy and The Chris Cosello Combo will get Bello cooking with classic soul, vintage R&B and killer rockabilly riffs. Other Bello newbies include Latin, blues & soul infused rock’n’roll from The Montgomery Brothers; punkedout street brass from Horns of Leroy; sassy soul from Melbourne fem-hop act The Mamas; and the blistering blues guitar of Lloyd Spiegel. Returning Winter Music artists include the Senegambian Jazz Band, Vaudeville Smash, Gold Member, Bullhorn and Juzzie Smith. Don’t miss NZs Auckland-born, Dunedin-raised, Nadia Reid; and must see acts Pony Face; Emily Wurramara, Hat Fitz and Cara, Psycho Zydeco, and The Maes (formerly The Mae Trio). Now in its 5th year, Bello Winter Music is a family friendly whole-town festival, featuring Bellingen LeaF, a sustainability focused program, and the hugely successful and invaluable Youth Mentorship Program for aspiring, young musicians.

FROM THE MAYOR Winter Fest is coming” I have never been a person that looks forward to the colder months but that all changed when the Bellingen Winter Festival came to the shire. Now I get super excited just thinking about the number of quality musicians and performers that are going to hit Bello this July. The opportunities to see both overseas and local acts, in a variety of funky venues, performing to people from all ages is something really special. Also we residents get to demonstrate to our visitors how special the Bellingen Shire is in regard to our connected community and precious environment. I look forward to seeing everyone with smiles on their faces dancing, laughing, eating at our restaurants and cafes, discovering our great businesses and just having a relaxed and fun four days. As always I would also recommend that everyone take the time to meet the locals and see some of our amazing natural assets. We have uncrowded beaches and towns on our seaboard, sweet river valleys and the amazing Dorrigo plateau whose heritage town and rugged surrounds are world famous. I would also like to acknowledge that The Bellingen Shire is located on the lands of the traditional custodians of these lands The Gumbaynggirr peoples and that it is, and always will be Aboriginal land. Mayor - Cr Dominic King

BWM is a ticketed event, taking place in the official festival venues within the township. Inevitably some performers will be more popular than others, and venues have individual capacities. Please, if you are concerned you might not get into a ‘must see’ act, get there early. If you miss out there is always another great act in a venue just next door or down the road. Have an amazing and musical weekend… Festival Director - Glenn Wright Bellingen is on Gumbaynggirr land and we acknowledge the Gumbaynggirr people as the traditional custodians of this land. We pay tribute to leaders and Elders past, present and future.

Where could you go? Take your next step towards a career in music with one of Australia’s leading young universities. You will learn in state-of-the-art music studios, guided by lecturers who are practicing musicians with strong industry links. Our students benefit from practical experience, performing at local venues and having access to artists and producers at music events such as Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay Bluesfest, Mullum Music Festival, Bello Winter Music and Falls Festival.

BULLHORN There’s an old saying, popularised by The Breakfast Club: “you mess with the bull, you get the horns”. What does it mean? Not much really. Mostly that if you do something dangerous, you might get hurt. One dangerous thing you could do would be to miss the crazy, brass based, MC led explosion that is BULLHORN. Formed in 2011, these party animals combine virtuosic musicianship, crazy arrangements, catchy grooves and upbeat rhythms to whip the audience into a veritable frenzy. Their presence is formidable; armed with trumpets, trombones, saxophones, drums, the mighty sousaphone and the massive presence of Roman MC. As BULLHORN starts to play audiences will experience intoxicating grooves and huge rumbling sounds around them as they descend into a world of sonic textures created live, acoustic and real.

HAT FITZ & CARA High-energy duo Hat Fitz and Cara are among Australia’s most talented roots music artists. The husband and wife team have clocked up 10 years of worldwide touring, festival performances and album releases from their base of operations in the hinterland of South East Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and are showing no signs of slowing down. Their festival touring circuit takes in Australia, the UK, North America and Europe where their modern blend of old-timey-influenced sounds is equally at home in a variety of settings from folk or Americana stages to blues and acoustic venues. While the singer/songwriters are both multi-instrumentalists, it’s Fitzy’s weathered vocals and soaring blues-soaked guitar combined with Cara’s pounding drums and soulful voice that show them at the peak of their creative power. *Youth Mentorship band mentor.

LAURA JEAN

THE MONTGOMERY BROTHERS

Sydney songwriter Laura Jean is revered for the striking beauty of her music and the strength of her piercing, intimate lyrics. She has been shortlisted twice for the Australian Music Prize, and has recorded with Paul Kelly, The Drones, Rolling Blackouts and Grand Salvo. She has toured UK/ Europe with Courtney Barnett and Jenny Hval, Australia/New Zealand with Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams, and played festivals like Meredith and Dark Mofo.

Hailing from the far north, now residents of Melbourne, The Montgomery Brothers have immediately set about delivering their sound to the music capital of Australia.

2018 album Devotion is a stunning artistic about-face from her previous folk-based work, an enveloping, deep pop album like nothing she has done before. It has had superlative reviews and made it into end of year lists around world.

With each member from distinctly complimentary musical families, the at times rapturous and fiercely talented three piece generate moments of soul, blues, latin and rock’n’roll that delightfully belie their youth. “It’s like a brain bath, because you kind of follow, kind of get it, but you don’t know where it’s going. Theirs is a channel of insightful chaos. Listening to the Montgomery Brothers, that is. They generate the kind of live music environment where you turn to your friend and delightedly just nod.” - Danny Ross *Performance highlights include Woodford Folk Festival, The Great Southern Blues Fest, Echuca Winter Blues Fest and Caloundra Music Festival.

EMILY WURRAMARA

VAUDEVILLE SMASH

2018 saw Emily’s long awaited mid-year release of her first full length debut album ‘Milyakburra’ - a dedication to both her daughter and her home.

Made up of three brothers and two mates, no other Australian band sounds like ’em. An explosion of funk, flute, sax, synth and groove, the dance floor is packed at a VAUDEVILLE SMASH gig.

Emily has teamed up again with award winning producer, David Bridie to complete the album, explaining the title: “Bickerton Island or Milyakburra, is where I spent most of my childhood going back and forth from Groote on a little dinghy boat with my grandparents. Milyakburra is where my ancestors established home, the Wurramara tribe. My great great grandfather, Joe Wurramara established a community there on the island. There’s only a school and one shop, right across the road from my grandmother’s house. Milyakburra is a very sacred and mystical island. Living in the busy city I wanted to create something that is a reminder to me of my home, and I hope that this album reaches out to the listeners and reminds them of their “home”.

JESS REBEIRO

SENEGAMBIAN JAZZ BAND

For Jess Ribeiro, making a record is a lot like falling in love: it’s a leap into the unknown with the belief that the currents will carry you. With album number three, LOVE HATE, the analogy could not be more apt. LOVE HATE traverses the whole landscape of love: its amorous peaks, its rough rivers, and its dark valleys.

THE SENEGAMBIAN JAZZ BAND has fused Afro jazz, deep world music beats and funk to create some truly awe-inspiring rhythms and melodies. With influences from Gambia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Ghana and Australia, the five-piece band share their outstanding talent and flair, channelling over eight thousand years of African musical traditions, transporting the power and beauty of these ancient sounds, rhythms and melodies to euphoric audiences across Australia.

Ribeiro is an award-winning singer songwriter. Her second album, Kill it Yourself, was produced by acclaimed musician/producer Mick Harvey (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey). It was recently included in the 2018 NPR top 100 Artists of SXSW. Shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize (AMP) in 2016 as well as in two categories for The Age Music Victoria Awards - best song and best female artist.  Ribeiro’s songs are cinematic in scope: it’s music that travels, across deserts like a Western, through city streets like Film Noir, diving headlong into hazy rock, landscape ambience and melodious 60’s psych.

Known widely as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the kora’, Amadou fulfils his ancestral duties to share the culture of his people through an intoxicating contemporary mastery of the African harp.

LEAH FLANAGAN

CLAIRE ANNE JUZZIE SMITH TAYLOR

You can hear and feel the depth of emotion Leah Flanagan invests in her songs and the honest stories that populate them. The tales and inspiration behind her songs are enlivened by rich musicality – whether backed by a full band or solo with ukulele (in the Northern Saltwater country style), acoustic, or electric guitar in hand.

Claire Anne Taylor is a rare Australian artist. She is a force of nature. With a voice that recalls a huskier, feminine version of Van Morrison, she crafts soulful folk songs that are alternatively lush and intimately earthy.

Leah ’s status as an Indigenous musician has led to contributions on essential albums such as Archie Roach’s 25th anniversary reissue of ‘Charcoal Lane’ and the recently updated version of Buried Country 1.5, The Story of Aboriginal Country Music.

LOS CARACOLES

MIDNIGHT TEA PARTY

ALISHA TODD

Led by Chilean freedom fighter Segundo Nitor, Los Caracoles are known to have everyone on their feet with their authentic Latin rhythms. They tell stories through their music about social challenges, the environment, immigration, love, ordinary heroes and the pure emotions of life. Segundo Nitor and Angela Zammataro became Los Caracoles after meeting in a Chilean choir in Melbourne in 1994. They had both had vast experience as singers but Segundo was primarily a poet. In 1995, his poetry began to turn into music. Los Caracoles means “The snails”. The name was inspired by the Latin American idea of the snail which travels slowly (but surely) through the continent, spreading peace and hope.

Midnight Tea Party are a 5 piece band hailing from Sydney’s Inner West. Gypsy, jazz, dub and drum n’ bass are all blended together to form the band’s unique sound. Cutting their teeth on warehouse parties as well as numerous festivals MTP deliver a live set that is packed with party vibes.

In a circus of comedy, music and magic, Mic Conway presents an hilarious array of idiosyncratic songs that will make your jaw drop, toes tap and sides split. Re-Storying Our Planet Proudly sponsored by

Welcome to the 5th annual Bello LeaF (Learning Festival). Our theme this year is “Re-Storying Our Planet”… because it is big times out there these days, and we reckon it’s crucial to start sharing new, more positive and life-affirming stories. So come along to a rich and exciting array of workshops, forums, and performances covering a wide variety of eco-topics – all telling the new sorts of stories we need to hear. Our workshops are facilitated by passionate local presenters from 12 different organisations on behalf of the Bellingen Shire Learning Alliance (BSLA). The LeaF is proudly sponsored by Kombu, and runs from Friday to Sunday of the festival. LeaF events are part of the festival program and free to ticket holders. Non-ticket holders are welcome to join (space allowing) by donation at the event. Visit the BSLA Tent in the Market Park to learn more about LeaF events or affiliate groups. Looking forward to sharing stories with you! Enjoy the festival.

This workshop explores a locally established project which will do just that. Facilitated by the Fractal Economy Co-operative (www.fractaleconomy.coop).
