Welcome
to the 11th Annual Mullum Music Festival.
Most self respecting music tragics have a musical bucket list. Acts they will travel half way across the world to see. One of mine is coming to Mullumbimby this year! Described by The New York Times as “The Sultan of Shred”, Bombino and his band will appear on Friday and Saturday. Also on the bill this year are Japanese kings of funk and soul Osaka Monaurail, much loved reggae musician Mike Love (US), and Irish group Saint Sister, who NPR recently voted favourite discovery artists at SXSW 2018. All up more than 80 artists from around the world, the nation and locally grown, will descend on the small township of Mullumbimby for four days of captivating music. New venues include the Byron School of Arts building, hosting an art exhibition and performances all days of the festival, Diner 55 replaces The Poinciana Café as our festival club, and The Byron Shire Council will host an hilarious line up of stand up comedians in the shires Council Chambers on the Saturday and Sunday of the festival weekend. Also for 2018 we welcome the ‘Ingenuity’ sculpture walk, and invite you all to take time out from the music and walk the path from the post office to Herritage Park. The Mullum Music Festival is a wrist banded event. Wearing the official festival wrist band provides access to all the official festival venues. We sell to the capacity of the combined venues, and we do not oversell or crowd venues. It’s inevitable that some gigs will be more popular than others, so please get to your ‘must see’ shows early to avoid disappointment, as venues do fill up. If a venue is full, then don’t stress, there is always another great act just across the road, or next door, that will have space. Please respect the town and the neighbours of our venues, and at the end of the night, please leave venues quietly. Have a wonderful 4 days in Mullum. Glenn Wright - Director A big group hug welcome to our Shire’s giant community love-in that is our very own MMF. It has been such a joy to watch this festival blossom and grow so organically for the last 11 years. Personally, I am excited about the big sounds of world-class reggae exploding across the festival stages of MMF this year. This is nostalgic-inducing music over-flowing with positivity and integrity, built on messages of love, equality and spirituality. What a perfect fit for a festival that is authentic to the core, supports its town and its musicians, goes above and beyond for the environment and nurtures young and emerging talent. And there’s always something new in store … like MMFs newest venue this year, a place already known for comedy and high jinx (I should know!). Yep, you can round off your festival experience with a hearty laugh at the Council Chambers on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. A cracker of a festival awaits! Simon Richardson - Mayor, Byron Shire Council

BOMBINO (AFR / NGR)
MAD PROFESSOR
“North African desert blues has become arguably the most successful world music genre to break through since reggae, and few have wielded the guitar with such mastery and majesty as Bombino”. - Mike Rubin May 17, 2018 The New York Times
A disciple of Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mad Professor was one of the leading producers in dub reggae’s second generation. His Dub Me Crazy albums helped dub make the transition into the digital age, when electronic productions started to take over mainstream reggae in the ’80s. His spaceage tracks not only made use of new digital technology, but often expanded dub’s sonic blueprint, adding more elements and layers of sound than his forebears typically did.
For centuries, the desert town of Agadez has served as a converging point for the great camel caravans driven by the Tuareg that link West Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean. Born in 1980 at a nomadic camp near this dusty outpost, the young guitarist and songwriter Omara “Bombino” Moctar was raised during an era of armed struggles for Tuareg independence and violent suppression by government forces. Bombino’s electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page. Bombino’s stunning new album ‘Deran’ is out now!
(GUYANA)
In the mid-’90s, he returned to the basics, debuting a more retro-sounding style on the Black Liberation Dub series. Additionally, he ran his own studio and label, Ariwa, which was home to a stable of vocalists (with an emphasis on lovers rock and conscious roots reggae) and some of the finest British reggae productions of the era. As his reputation grew, he became a remixer of choice for adventurous rock and techno acts, most notably revamping Massive Attack’s entire second album under the new title No Protection. Don’t miss festival Friday with the final set coming from the world renowned Master of Dub, Mad Professor!

GORDI
MIKE LOVE (US)
Sydney folktronica artist Gordi caused a stir in late 2014 and early 2015 with her luminous indie pop songs “Nothing’s As It Seems,” “Taken Blame” and “Can We Work It Out.” The tracks were picked up by triple j and community radio around the country, and attracted international interest from tastemaker blogs, radio and showcase events, drawing comparisons to Asgeir, Tallest Man on Earth and Angel Olsen.
In this modern age of music, genres blend together as naturally as the river flows into the sea. With the expansive library of all the music of the world from every time period a t our fingertips, creative artists seem to be more and more liberated from the archaic mentality of being pigeonholed into one genre or demographic. Mike Love is at the forefront of this movement.
Gordi has since been nominated for two FBi Radio SMAC Awards, and as “Unearthed Artist of the Year” at the J Awards, and was the #1 “Most Played Artist” on triple j Unearthed. Most recently Gordi has toured with Missy Higgins, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Asgeir, Julien Baker & Gang Of Youths to name a few. Her exquisite debut album ‘Reservoir’ was recorded across multiple continents with a range of world-class producers and musicians. Gordi’s soulful vocals are complemented by crisp, ethereal production across 11 tracks that delve into the ramifications of loss and time.

With a foundation rooted in the spirituality and message-based music of Reggae and Rastafari, he blends the sounds of progressive and classic rock, pop, R & B, soul, blues, flamenco, jazz and so much more. You’ll often catch Mike saying “I just keep playing the music, and this thing just keeps growing. It has a life of its own and I’m just grateful for it.” Born and raised on the island of O’ahu, Hawai’i, Love now tours constantly, with warm and enthusiastic receptions across Europe, Central America, Australia, Polynesia and more. Throughout it all, Love has remained humble, citing the healing power of the music that comes from a larger place as the sole reason this all has been possible.

LIOR
GABRIELLA COHEN
BEN OTTEWELL (UK)
Lior returns to Mullum Music Festival with a string quartet, performing a wide selection of material, old and new, in celebration of his new album “Between You and Me”.
Australia’s sweetheart, Gabriella Cohen has struck gold again with the release of her No. 2 international acclaimed record ‘Pink Is The Colour Of Unconditional Love’. This record is once again self-produced, and engineered by long time collaborator Kate ‘Babyshakes’ Dillon and Cohen herself, in the countryside of regional Victoria.
As a singer and lead guitarist in rock band Gomez, Ben Ottewell is well known for his unmistakable voice and talent for blistering and inspired guitar solos. Rolling Stone declared, “Gomez’s not-so-secret weapon is Ben Ottewell.” And as GQ Magazine once wrote and anyone listening can attest, “[his] voice is not of this world.”
No stranger to the stage, Gabriella Cohen writes music that is emotionally raw, aching with nostalgia, and painted with melodies that recall a languid lovesickness.
Ottewell released his third and latest album ‘A Man Apart’ in 2017.
(WITH STRINGS)
Lior burst on to the Australian music scene in 2005 with his stunning debut album - ‘Autumn Flow’. Recorded and released entirely independently, the album became one of the most successful independent debuts in Australian music history. He then went on to release more solo albums that featured Sia, Passenger, Joseph Tawardos and many others. Lior has achieved musical credibility and integrity whilst maintaining an independence and individuality, and has garnered a great degree of success and critical acclaim.
The Melbourne via LA based songwriter is known for her magnetic stage presence, captivating audiences with a combination of honest heartache and sinister sensuality.
With an avid following from the days of Gomez, ‘A Man Apart’ crosses musical genres such as Americana, blues and folk backed by Ben’s unmistakable gutsy and gravelly voice.
Lior plays solo opening night and with strings sunday.

SAINT SISTER (IRE)
HUSKY
45 PACKIN’ MAMA
“Their haunting performance is impeccable… Masters at creating atmosphere, they command the room with near-perfect silence achieved during Corpses.” -The Irish Times
Melbourne psychadelic-folk dreamers Husky continue to push their own musical boundaries, experimenting with synthesisers and electronic sounds with their most recent release, Punchbuzz.
‘45 Packin’ Mama’ is a show that pays tribute to the strength, resilience and toughness of the great singers from the 20’s to the 50’s.
Formed in 2014, Saint Sister is friends Morgan MacIntyre and Gemma Doherty. Their music draws from early Celtic harp traditions, 60s folk and electronic pop to create ‘atmosfolk’—a mix of soulful vocal harmonies, dreamy synth and electro-acoustic harp. Saint Sister have performed at premiere music events across the globe, from Glastonbury and Latitude, to The Great Escape and SXSW to name a few. Their intimate live show will delight Mullum festival audiences, and is absolutely not to be missed.
Husky consists of cousins Husky Gawenda and piano virtuoso Gideon Preiss, who grew up with a shared love of the west coast California sound — The Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills & Nash and America —sounds that have stayed with them as they have evolved. The band has supported Neil Young, Gotye, The Shins and Devendra Barnhart to name just a few. Thurs 15th Opening Night Civic Hall
Well known singer/songwriter Tracy Miller performs songs by Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Dinah Washington, Koko Taylor,Billie Holiday, Big Mama Thornton, and Gospel Legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe. WILLIAM CRIGHTON
CAITI BAKER BOBBY ALU
Within a short time William Crighton has drawn a big buzz in Australia. Rolling Stone featured him as one of Australia’s hottest rising stars. He’s been booked on a seamless string of festivals including WOMADelaide, Bluesfest and Boomtown Fair in the UK, received radio play around the country, gathered 4 and half star album reviews, and a stunning slew of live reviews.
Born into a household filled with vinyl, CDs and tapes of blues, soul, gospel, jazz, big band and rock & roll, Caiti Baker was raised amongst music. She developed a love and appreciation for pioneering music, but was drawn obsessively to hiphop, R&B, New Jack Swing and Neo soul.
This mesmerising singer-songwriter documents Australian life with nuanced storytelling and perceptive philosophy. William’s Debut self titled album was included on The Australian and (prominent media source) The Music’s Top 10 Albums of the Year lists in 2016.
She writes songs about what she knows and feels, sings with her guts and soul and unashamedly performs the hell out of them.
To support the release of ‘Move’, Alu and his band head out on a 20-date Australasian tour Include a Sunday spot at one of his favourite music festivals. As usual, he’ll be observing the ebb and flow of life and locking into tried and true grooves, as well as the care that can only come from serenading your nearest and dearest by a coastal camp fire, with an instrument handed down from your mother.

OLD MAN LUEDECKE
ÁINE TYRRELL LADYSLUG
2x JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter Old Man Luedecke sings melodic gems, blending old time sensibilities with an unusual vision and poetic sense. He performs with a gentle and endearing charisma, stories littered with a canny oblique humour; a sly entertainer with almost a hint of vaudeville about him, playing a mean claw hammer banjo.
Story is at the forefront for troubadour Áine Tyrrell who draws deeply on her Irish roots, with one boot in the red dirt of her adopted country of Australia and the other firmly planted in her homeland.
(CAN) (PRESENTED BY SMALL HALLS)
His latest recording “Domestic Eccentric” was recorded with and produced by legendary old time and bluegrass musician Tim O’Brien. The album is inspired and dedicated to his family, which is characterised by a somewhat “eccentric domestic” existence.
(IRE / AU)
Áine cradles the spirit of her native homeland. Ache, honesty, elated melodies and garnishing rhythms which a thousand years of ancestry have slammed foot to floorboards to for both celebration and protest. Her music is a call to arms, a siren’s wisdoms and warnings, and most importantly the soundtrack of a woman who walks her own beat.

Ladyslug are multi-dimensional freaks. They roll in the realm of nu-jazz, navigating between the chaos and calm of their monstrous tunes. Their songs are collisions of an explosive vocal palette, lyrics laden in ironic hyperbole, polyrhythmic keys and high-functioning harmony, held down by a phat rhythm section fascinated with quintuplets. Sprung from the loins of the Northern NSW in 2016, Ladyslug, with their guerrilla musicianship and creative prowess, is poised to pounce.

CHINA BOWLS (UK)
MICHAEL JOHN BRYANT
BUDDY (US)
“Soulful and with a jazz-like dexterity, her approach is broad, open to fresh influence while retaining that instantly recognisable voice.” - Clash Magazine
How do I deal with this? Michael John Bryant headed into a second hand guitar shop-come-studio by night with producer Diego Zaragoza and answered that question as best he could with the only thing he had left, music.
“Buddy’s sincere, soft, melancholy style is irresistible, infectious, and emotionally powerful” - Impact Press
Singer songwriter China Bowls delivers a smooth honey pot of sounds, combining neo soul, jazz and hip hop influences. Bowls’ playful use of acrobatic vocals weave in and out of her percussive guitar tones, combined with honest and insightful lyricism. “While her performance is immeasurably fierce, there’s also a relaxed, effortlessness to her output, marking China Bowls as one of those rare, born-with-it talents.” - GoldFlake Paint
The album ‘How do i deal with this’ is a raw appraisal of someone dealing with a past that is difficult to accept, and hoping for a future that was difficult to imagine. The music is raw, guitar and voice, with subtle strings and piano, and simple drums to deal with life on life’s terms.
Buddy is an indie rocker from Los Angeles, California. His songs have been featured in numerous television shows and films including “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Cougar Town”, and more. Buddy has been busy in the studio finishing up a new 2018 release.
