e m o c l We The City Of Bendigo is on Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung Country and we acknowledge these traditional owners of the land. We pay tribute to leaders and Elders past, present and future.

There are two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... - Duke Ellington Welcome to the inaugural Bendigo Autumn Music (BAM), a fourday music long weekend, all about good music, taking place on the second weekend of the Easter School holiday break in the iconic venues of Bendigo. BAM will present over 80 groups, and 200 performances in a festival precinct that will be alive with music coming from the theatres, clubs, pubs, restaurants, cafés and streets. The programming is diverse and challenging, and not restricted to just performers that might sell a ticket, or might be the popular

A four day music festival in Bendigo’s arts precinct

act on the radio at the time. Rather the programming reflects the many different genres and sub genres of music that can be found at live venues today, with local, national and international musicians appearing, many over multiple days. As well as good music, BAM presents a busy arts program including daily comedy, street theatre and circus performances, music, music industry talks and master classes, sustainability talks, yoga classes to start the day, and surprise pop ups and performances. In partnership with Green Music Australia BAM is keen to be a responsible and sustainable event. By using existing venues the event already avoids hiring and movement of tents, porta loos, fencing and associated temporary infrastructure. BAM bars and restaurants will avoid single use plastics and the festival bar will use reusable cups, thanks to our green sponsor Stone and Wood’s “For Cup’s Sake” rent a cup system. Please help us

4 to reduce waste at BAM by bringing your reusable coffee cups, and water bottles. Our venues and the festival market place will have water stations with green sponsor Coliban Water providing the station at the centrally located Stage Door Market Place.

Saturday starts early with yoga at 8am then workshops, talks, forums and pop ups. Sunday is a similar start to the day, and a feature is the Street Parade. Grim Fawkner

BAM is running a wonderful youth mentorship program where young musicians gain the opportunity to be mentored by artists at the festival. The mentorship includes a rehearsal with their mentor and a scheduled performance at a festival stage. If you know of young musicians that could benefit from such a program encourage them to apply. Applications are simple and at our website. There are many free ‘pop up’ performances throughout the festival precinct that will also add to the festival atmosphere of the weekend, including musical and arts performances at the Dudley House Gallery Market Place, pop up café events and the Sunday street parade featuring local musicians along with festival artists, starting at 11am, in Rosalind Garden (Corner of View St and Pall Mall). The BAM festival starts on ANZAC Day, Thursday 25th April, with our Gala Opening Night event, hosted by Brian Nankervis and featuring short performances by artists of the festival. It’s a great night that will give the audience a taste of BAM. Friday at 5pm the festival precinct gets cracking, with all venues open and underway.

BAM is an all ages, safe family event. Bring your purchased ticket to our ticketing headquarters at The Capital Theatre on the day your ticket is valid and we will exchange for your wrist band. This will gain you access to all venues of the festival. It’s inevitable some performances will be more popular than others so for your mustsee gigs get there early, possibly when the preceding gig is finishing, to avoid disappointment. BAM sells to the combined capacity of the venues of the eventand will not oversell. If a venue is full please don’t stress, there is always another great act just across the road or next door, that will have space. Please respect the town and the neighbours of the venues, and at the end of the night leave quietly. At the best festivals it is easy to forget the everyday tasks of life, to smile and laugh and get involved, be inspired by the performances or just relax. At the best festivals we recharge our souls. I invite you to come to Bendigo this April and get recharged at BAM. Glenn Wright Festival Director – BAM

KURT VILE

& THE VIOLATORS (US) One of the most critically and commercially acclaimed artists of the last decade, Kurt Vile released ‘Bottle It In’ in October 2018. The epic, loping ‘Bassackwards’ follows previously released single, ‘Loading Zones’, an ode to the parking challenges in Vile’s native Philadelphia, described as “Vile at his comforting, shaggy best” (The Guardian), and an “ambiguous rumination on small town life” (MOJO).

Fri 26th 9:00pm Ulumbarra Theatre

‘Bottle It In’ heads off in new directions, pushing at the edges of the map into unexplored territory: Here be monster jams. These songs show an artist who is still evolving and growing: a songwriter who, like his hero John Prine, can make you laugh and break your heart, often in the same line, as well as a vocalist who essentially rewrites those songs whenever he sings them in his wise, laconic jive-talkin’ drawl.

VIKA & LINDA BULL For 30 years, the glorious voices of Vika and Linda Bull have comprised one of the most distinctive, versatile and emotionally charged sounds on the Australian music landscape. Since their multi-platinum conquest of pop radio with the Black Sorrows in the late 1980s, the sisters have forged diverse pathways into soul, gospel, blues, country and the island music of their Tongan ancestry. By turns tender and powerful, their rich solo vocals and instinctive harmonies have spawned eight albums of their own, as well as illuminating studio and concert performances by Paul Kelly, Rockwiz, C.W. Stoneking, Deborah Conway, Kasey Chambers and many more.

Fri 26th 8:45pm Capital Theatre

Vika & Linda are currently working on their first full length album of original material for 17 years. Watch this space, open your ears and hold onto your heart.

TEX PERKINS

& THE FAT RUBBER BAND It’s understandably difficult to pull together a coherent picture of a man whose career has taken in everything from the groundbreaking experimental punktonica of Sydney mid-80s noiseniks Thug, to the lilting, dark country of his recent material with the Dark Horses. From the hard-edged pub rock of the Beasts Of Bourbon’s, the snarling slice of filthy pub rock & evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea, and the Tex, Don & Charlie albums, now is Tex Perkin’s exciting new (and long over due) band with Matt Walker - The Fat Rubber Band... It’s a blues swamp-groove kinda thing that’s a little reminiscent of some of the things in Tex’s back catalogue. Many new originals inhabit the setlist, but see them now while they still have to flesh out the set with a few Cruel Sea covers!

Sat 27th 8:30pm Ulumbarra Theatre

CASH SAVAGE

& THE LAST DRINKS Known for their epic live shows, Cash Savage and The Last Drinks are excited to be touring their fourth studio album Good Citizens. Good Citizens raises the stakes and signals the ascent of Cash Savage and the Last Drinks as one of the heavy hitters of Australian music’s new era. An incandescent live band at the height of their powers, led by their mighty front-woman, whose potent lyrics and impassioned delivery articulate the personal-political issues of these times with all her heart, guts and grit. Having towered over festival audiences at Golden Plains, Boogie and Sydney Festival, selling out The Corner in her hometown of Melbourne, and earning rave reviews for her recent packed-out Sydney show, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks are on a mighty roll...

XYLOURIS WHITE Xylouris White, the visionary duo formed of Cretan lute player George Xylouris and Australian post-punk drummerJim White (Dirty Three) return to Australia to perform at BAM. After shows at the Sydney Opera House, and an album launch in Melbourne to celebrate the release of their third album, ‘Mother’ continues the duo’s visionary concoction of free-jazz, avant-rock and ages-old Greek folk traditions that saw their 2014 debut album ‘Goats’ top the Billboard World Music chart.

HARRY JAMES ANGUS

STRUGGLE WITH GLORY Harry James Angus, the explosive trumpet-playing singer from The Cat Empire, is known for his deeply original live performances, in which the highest standards of musical craftsmanship are thrown into chaos, uncertainty, and ultimately transcendence.

Sat 27th 10:30pm Ulumbarra Theatre Sun 28th 5:15pm Capital Theatre

Featuring some of Australia’s finest jazz soloists, complete with horns, vocal chorus and Angus’s soaring trumpet, Struggle With Glory is a new project that explores the archetypal stories of Ancient Greek mythology -the savage and beautiful world of the Olympian Gods, of Achilles and Odysseus, of Sea Nymphs and of the Minotaur, re-imagined through the swoop and holler of traditional Gospel music.

16 LOVERS LANE

MEMBERS OF THE GO BETWEENS ”One of the most literary albums ever made by an Australian band.- ‘THE GUARDIAN’ The Go Betweens recorded their literate and poetic album ‘16 Lovers Lane’ in 1988 and over the years it has become a beloved part of Australian music history, a pinnacle of the band’s musical legacy. Thirty years later, three of the albums original creators Lindy Morrison, Amanda Brown and John Willsteed have reunited to perform 16 Lovers Lane in it’s entirety. Joined by musicians Dan Kelly, Luke Peacock and Danny Widdicombe, the concert features a unique lineup of guest singers - carefully curated by the band – who perform these songs of love and loss, penned by songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. With guest vocalists Laura Jean, Katie Noonan, Emily Lubitz (Tinpan Orange), Alex Gow (Oh Mercy), Rob Snarski (The Blackeyed Susans), Dave Graney and Clare Moore.

SIBUSILE XABA (STH AFRICA)

Charismatic guitar savant Sibusile Xaba reframes maskandi and the avant garde into his own humanist manifesto. With a vocal style that is part dream-scaping and part ancestral invocation, Xaba divines as opposed to plainly singing. Combined with a guitar style that is rooted in expressive picking, Xaba’s music shatters the confines of genre, taking only the fundamentals from mentors such as Madala Kunene and Dr Philip Tabane and imbuing these with a mythology and improvisational intensity all of his own. Maskandi, malombo, the desert blues and jazz all figure in Sibusile Xaba’s expansive vocabulary, albeit through a magnetic individual filter. ”This music is extraordinary” – Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio)

Renowned for their electric dynamic on stage, Tiny Ruins have toured the world many times over in solo and varied group formations. They have played stages across countless cities and states with Sharon van Etten, Calexico, the Handsome Family and more.

Aria nominated Mojo Juju has been called many things and yet she is forever hard to define. By her own explanation, Mojo has never felt comfortable with being categorized and is increasingly deliberate in avoiding labels and defying genres. As a result, it is only in experiencing her live shows that one can begin to understand the full breadth of this dynamic artist.

RVG

Z-STAR DELTA (UK)

LAURA JEAN

Hailing from the northern suburbs of Melbourne, RVG —more formally, but less frequently, the Romy Vager Group —self released their sensational debut full-length, ‘A Quality Of Mercy’, last year to critical acclaim.

Melbourne’s Laura Jean is revered for the striking beauty of her music and the strength of her piercing, intimate lyrics.

The LP is an eight-track collection of tight, incisive post-punk/retro-pop infused with a liberal dose of downcast catharsis, confessional lyrics and downright infectious hooks.

Z-STAR DELTA is an explosive duo fronted by multi-instrumentalist Zee Gachette, fast becoming hot music property and hailed as the highlight of many festivals, thanks to their legendary and high octane live performances. The duo’s sound travels through an intoxicating mix of Country Blues and Desert Rock. They are now huge Australian Festival favourites having played over 30 Aussie Festivals over the last 4 years.

FREYA JOSEPHINE HOLLICK

RYAN DOWNEY

ARCHER

Small town songbird, country resurgent, spellbinding messenger of heartbreak and womanhood, of another time, another world, and an eternal entity of forgotten stardust is Freya Josephine Hollick.

The defining feature of Ryan Downey’s music is his voice; a jaw-dropping amalgamation of Leonard Cohen and Bill Callahan by way of some mid-century crooner.

There’s no one else doing it like Archer. He is an old time sing-song man. He sings up the land, its people and animals, in a way that’s seldom heard today; with all of himself, without artifice, with dark humour and real beauty.

Her voice floats between Maybelle Carter, Dolly Parton and Skip James.
