From humble beginnings to lead Triple J producer When he finished high school, Nick Gerber says he didn’t know much about anything, but he knew he wanted to work in media. “I was a shy, awkward kid who could barely talk on the phone, but I loved music.”
It was a dream Nick pursued relentlessly, cutting his broadcasting teeth at ABC Newcastle and applying for jobs at Triple J until he eventually got offered an assistant producer’s position.
Nick enrolled in a media degree at Southern Cross, and that’s when he fell, quite unexpectedly, in love. “At the time, we all thought radio was dying. This was before podcasting became such a big thing. But then I did the radio part of the course and one of our assignments was listening to different programs and trying to work out how they were put together technically and that just really turned me on to radio and particularly Triple J – to work there became my dream.”
Nick has worked on the Triple J Hottest 100, the popular Like a Version segment, as a lead producer on Breakfast and even live broadcasting from Splendour in the Grass. He now works as a producer across the Drive and Breakfast programs. Not bad for a boy who couldn’t talk on the phone.

THE MAGIC BUS HARRY JAMES ANGUS
Welcome
to Mullum Music Festival 2019, where artists from across the globe and musical spectrum gather in this quirky coastal counter-culture town to create a 4-day joyous gumbo of musical delights in the halls, pubs, cafes, churches and streets. Now 12 years strong, ‘Mullum’ has quietly cemented its reputation as one of the best little music festivals around, offering something for all tastes and ages, proving that bigger isn’t always better, and that a smaller curated and diverse event can be successfully ongoing. Part of my role as festival director is to spruik the event to media. And every year I’m asked, “Why Mullum, what’s so good about it?” So I’ve had a good think and here is my answer; as short and sweet as I can make it. The festival hits the right note with a carefully curated and exciting music program. It’s in a brilliant location, with a local audience that appreciates art and culture and independent thinking. A huge amount of love goes into the organisation of the event, with teams busily decorating streets and venues and smiling organisers and volunteers who are passionate about the music and the weekend. The musicians are invested in the festival and get involved. Patrons including Mama Kin, Harry Angus, Suzannah Espie, Husky and Gideon (this year’s patrons) create artistic experiences that are unique to the event. Also the Street Parade, Youth Mentorship, mad Russian choir, disco dance troupes, the Magic Bus, the stalls, Piano Bar, Sister Mary and her amazing tribute shows, pop ups, secret gigs, workshops, social and environmental talks and actions and more... all add to the success of the event. The combined outcome of all this love and creativity is just maybe a little bit bigger than the sum of its parts. Now that’s all well and good, but as Duke Ellington sang...‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing’. And the ‘swing’ is the final and most important element. The swing is the music. And it’s at this point that the success of the event rests in the hands of the amazing artist lineup for 2019. Have a flick through these pages and I’m sure you will agree our success is assured. Mullum 2019 is going to be amazing!
The Mullum Music Festival is a wrist banded event. Wearing the official festival wrist band provides access to all the official festival venues. We sell to the capacity of the combined venues, and we do not oversell or crowd venues. It’s inevitable that some gigs will be more popular than others, so please get to your ‘must see’ shows early. If a venue is full, don’t worry! There is always another great act just across the road, or next door. Please respect the town and the neighbours of our venues, and at the end of the night, please leave venues quietly. Have a wonderful 4 days in Mullum.
Glenn Wright - Director
From the Mayor Plug yourself in for a big one! The 12th Mullumbimby Music Festival promises to be the most inspired yet as it shines a spotlight on the important role art and culture plays in feeding our souls and creating connection. I can’t wait to reconnect with Mojo Juju after falling in love with her vibe in a packed and steamy venue at the MMF a few years back. Add in the passionate Spanish wonderland that is Nano Stern, Ethio-soul superstars like Dereb the Ambassador, a bit of firebrand trumpet from Harry James Angus, a lashing of inspiration from Husky, and some certain ripping up the floor with Hat Fitz –and boy, my dance card will be full! I hope to see you all out there getting amongst it! Heartfelt thanks to the MMF crew for curation of a such a high calibre festival, one that supports its town and musicians, gives back to the environment and weaves us together each year with its very special magic.

Nano Stern (Chile)
Mojo JuJu
There is a rare power and beauty to a Nano Stern performance. He best describes his musical ethic as being “able to vibrate strongly,” and in turn, the audience resonates.
2018 saw Mojo Juju drop her her biggest album yet – NATIVE TONGUE.
“We can put aside words, and genre, and tradition. In the end, it is all about a movement of air that makes our bodies move. It’s the most mysterious thing.” Nano Stern is a contemporary Latin American roots artist, riding the crest of the new wave of Chilean Song, with a devoted following that stretches out from Chile, into Latin America, north to Mexico, Canada and the USA, over to Europe and down in Australia. His musical virtuosity, mesmerizing and charismatic live performances and his passionate and poetic advocacy for social justice result in a true and honest universal message, delivered with intense energy and a high level of musicality. His contagious personal energy and fluency in multiple languages allows Nano to warmly include his international audiences in the stories of his Spanish songs.

Wagons
Sibusile Xaba (Sth Afr)
Wagons stay atop their own tidal wave of hard -hitting, outlaw inspired, swamp rock madness, still pulsing and stomping together as a joint force, with singer Henry Wagons at the helm.
Charismatic guitar savant Sibusile Xaba reframes maskandi and the avant garde into his own humanist manifesto. With a vocal style that is part dream-scaping and part ancestral invocation, Xaba divines as opposed to plainly singing. Combined with a guitar style that is rooted in expressive picking, Xaba’s music shatters the confines of genre, taking the fundamentals from mentors Madala Kunene and Dr Philip Tabane, and imbuing these with his own mythology and improvisational intensity.
Henry’s fierce intellect, once hurtling toward a career as a philosopher, was thankfully derailed by a record deal, a thirst for whisky and an insatiable need to make noise, as made evident by their music and lyrics. Producing six albums together, the band have garnered an increasing list of awards and achievements including ‘Album of the Week’ on RRR, PBS, RTR, 2SER, Edge radio, The Age / EG ‘Best Band’ & ‘Album of the Year’, Rhythms Magazine ‘Album Of Year’, AIR ‘Country Album of the Year’, plus Melbourne Magazine naming Henry Wagons in their ‘Top 100 Most Influential People’. Their latest offering “Songs From The Aftermath” is out now.

His debut LP, “Open Letter to Adoniah” is an album reverent of life and its connectedness to a higher source. The music emanates from dreams revealed to the artist over consecutive days, and was recorded by Mushroom Hour Half Hour in the Magaliesberg Mountains, outside Johannesburg in 2016. Maskandi, malombo, the desert blues and jazz all figure in Sibusile Xaba’s expansive vocabulary, albeit through a magnetic individual filter. “This music is extraordinary” – Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio)

Acclaimed vocalist Emma Donovan and Melbourne rhythm combo The Putbacks burst onto the Australian scene with their album ‘Dawn’ in 2015, announcing a new voice in Australian soul music. Emma’s songwriting is optimistic, impassioned, and brutally honest. The Putbacks’ music is fluid, live and raw, and the collaboration has won friends and admirers all over the world. With a shared love for classic US soul, and the protest music of Indigenous Australia, witness shades of every soul record you ever liked sneaking through. Al Green’s Hi Records era? Check. Aretha’s Classic Atlantic recordings? Check. Stacks of Stax? Check. Harry James Angus, (The Cat Empire) is known both for his thrilling live performances and for his constant musical re-invention. His new work takes the raw intensity, chaos and exploratory power that has helped make The Cat Empire such an incandescent live experience, but redirects it towards a darker, more weirdly beautiful universe. A universe inspired by artists like Nina Simone, Van Morrison, Antony & The Johnsons and John Coltrane. The first song from Harry’s new body of work “Flicker”, incorporates gospel harmonies, thumping drums, a disregard for conventional song structure and tempo, and a vocal take that stretches Harry’s range to its very extremes and most powerful places. It is deeply affecting and personal. It is, quite simply utterly sublime and unlike anything else you will hear. Sat 16th | 9:00pm | Civic Hall Sun 17th | 4:30pm | High School

Quivers make cathartic guitar pop that jangles and shimmers somewhere between 1980s Australia and 1990s America. The Melbourne band has toured Australia, NZ, Canada and most recently the US, where they showcased at SXSW and filmed a session for KEXP in Seattle Half men and women, everyone-singing, there is grit and spit and community in their live shows. The chorus of ‘Pigeons’ feels good to shout, “All my best friends are a little broken, all the best people are”. Newest single “You’re Not Always On My Mind” has received international support (KEXP/ NPR), and commits to being a pop song - taking the band deeper down the rabbit hole of lyric-heavy chiming guitar-pop.

Joe Pug (US)
Z-Star Trinity Steve Gunn (UK)
(US)
Joe Pug’s new record “The Flood In Color” is nearly four years in the making and was one of the most natural and rewarding processes of his career.
Intense and powerful vocals, driving beats, phenomenal musicality, strength and spirit wrapped up in whiskey swiggin’ wild shenanigans from the next dimension!!
Produced by Kenneth Pattengale of the Milk Carton Kids and engineered by Matt Ross-Spang, the album started with the goal of focusing on the simplicity of musicians playing together, live, in the same room.
Z-STAR TRINITY is Zee Gachette’s intergalactic power trio – Voice + El/Ac Gtr, Bass and Drums. They’re currently taking Australia by storm, setting stages alight with their high-octane energy and raw passion, the trio have been touted as the highlight of many a festival. From the Sydney Guitar Festival, to Palm Creek Folk Festival and Bello Winter Music, and returning to our very own Mullum Music Festival.

Recently relocating back to his childhood home in Prince Georges County, Maryland after many years spent in Chicago and Austin, Pug wanted take a new approach. The partnership with Pattengale proved to be an irresistible opportunity to do just that…

Allensworth fuse rock and soul into a melting pot of true life anthemic stories.
W hile a far cry from gospel music, Loren’s music shares that same uplifting spiritualism. It ain’t preachy. More so, ‘stubbornly positive’ - putting one foot in front of the other, keeping her head above water. Loren’s stories organically stem from this place of endurance; perseverance. Greg Sheehan
Alana Wilkinson
Kent Burnside (US)
Greg Sheehan’s trailblazing approach has earned him international renown as one of Australia’s most cherished and influential percussionists.
Equal parts vulnerable folk singer and vitriolic punk poet, Melbourne artist Alana Wilkinson is a smiling assassin.
Kent Burnside was born into the blues. He hails from Holly Springs, Mississippi, as the oldest Grandson and pupil of blues legend, R.L. Burnside.
A passionate visionary who created a unique teaching system known as ‘Rhythm Diamonds’, Greg’s contagious enthusiasm has inspired generations. He has performed with some of the world’s finest, including The Black Arm Band, Sinead O’Connor, Blue King Brown, Circle of Rhythm, Sharon Shannon and Jeff Lang, to name but a few…
Combining delicate melodies with disarmingly insightful vignettes about the human condition, Wilkinson’s songwriting skewers ex-lovers, would-be suitors, ridiculous social norms and the absurd challenges of suburban life in a merciless, yet strangely affectionate way. She engages audiences with revealing and hilarious stories and songs accompanied by guitar and uke and the theatrical delivery that serves her so well.

The New Savages
Karl S Williams
Brekky Boy
The New Savages are an electric and original take on the first generation of recorded blues. Lead Singer Milan’s striking vocals evoke the spirit of a great poet. His guitar playing is a simple, primitive and hypnotic boogie.
Karl S. Williams emerged from the cane country of NSW, steeped in swamp water and primitive music. His songs are a distillation of life, love and the human condition; a kind of folk, soul, blues but not as you know it.
Piano-driven powerhouse ‘jazznotjazz’ trio Brekky Boy perform musical works written about dogs.
Their ears are tuned to sounds from another world. A deep interest in the history of the blues led Milan on a pilgrimage into the Mississippi Hill Country. While there he befriended Kent Burnside, Grandson of the legendary RL Burnside.
With a weaponised voice that can soar, moan and ache with the best of them, a Karl S. Williams show is frequently referred to as a spiritual experience.
Over a couple of beers they decided on a tour of Australia.

The Sydney based outfit has carved out an invigorating original sound from a disparate array of influences: drawing on artists such as Tigran Hamasyan, Ólafur Arnalds, GoGo Penguin & The Bad Plus. Mixing harmonic landscapes with complex grooves and minimalist piano melodies, the trio brings something refreshingly vibrant and contemporary to the jazz genre. Their latest EP, ‘Sagarmatha’ (June 2019) is an exploration of intricate rhythms and folk inspired harmony.

Recruiting fans worldwide with their thought provoking melodies, hard hitting hooks, and soulful signature vocals, they cite influences as diverse as Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Cream and Supertramp, to the psychedelics of Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, The Beatles and the dirty blues, funk and soul of giants Parliament and War. Mandy Hawkes After spending years in a musical wasteland, Mandy Hawkes began to write songs again, and became preoccupied with singing about mortality, end times and other serious themes. Raised on a steady diet of Hymns and Dylan, Mandy’s unconventional voice is equal parts weary soul traveller and folk storyteller. Sophie Ozard Sophie Ozard plays soul-drenched pop, delivered via sharp, pointed lyrics and a baby blue telecaster. With folk, rock, and jazz influences, her songs provide lyrics that staunchly address social issues and hooks that float around in your head long after the show has ended. With two singles that attracted national and international airplay, Sophie has played alongside Gabriella Cohen, Peter Bibby, and Dami Im. With radio presenters calling her a “sonic gunslinger” and “sharp, angular lyricist”, a debut EP due early next year and a string of NZ festivals lined up for 2020, she is quickly finding her feet as an artist. The De Bortoli family story is one of determination and triumph that started in war-torn Europe and is now told, generations later, across Australia. A move towards sustainable vineyard practices, minimal interference in the winery and an increasing fascination with single vineyard wines show innovation playing as important a part as tradition in the family business.

Lady Mondegreen
Try to reach delicately around a rosebush to pick a peculiarly coloured bud. Turn it into a song, give it two voices and a pluck on a guitar. This is something like Lady Mondegreen. She is not one but two hearts making music on a rooftop, sometimes her lips are stained with fermented vineyard. Sometimes her brow furrowed by life moving through it. Always at least ten of her fingers are plucking something, and one of her voices singing about a profound part of mundanity. Sun 17th | 5:30pm | BSA

The climate emergency is continuing to dial up the levels of CODE RED, but we continue to be let down by our current government’s lack of responsible leadership and its ugly boys club behaviours with other countries like the United States. We are being called to act from the ground up. In response, this year we have stripped back Renew Fest’s community program at Mullum Music Festival to feature just three things: a contemplative discussion, a walk, and weaving.... to give you space within the bustling of yet another awesome Mullum Music Festival program, and so you can really take your time contemplating how important it is that we come together to act NOW for the climate, and for all life on earth. MMF has supported this choice by bringing our much loved community discussion panel into the comfort of the Piano Bar venue. Like always, thank you so much MMF for welcoming this community program brought to you by Renew Fest! Thank you double time for your ongoing commitment to reducing waste and supporting regenerative change in Australia’s Biggest Little Town, through initiatives such as BYO your own cups!!

Contemplation Panel: “What songs shall we sing for the earth? Grief, joy, music and the end of the world.” Saturday | Piano Bar | 11:00 - 12:30pm How do we respond to increasingly devastating climate change and all the faults in our human systems that are driving it? There seems to be five main options going around: Ignore... and put head in the sand. Enjoy... what you got while you can. Rebel... and demand that laws change or the powerful stand aside. Adapt... to all the big and sudden shifts. Grieve... because that’s all we got left. What songs exist for each of these options? What would a musician do? What could a singer sing? What does a listening affected heart need in these times? Join Ella Rose Goninan, director of Renew Fest, along with Student Climate Striker Reps and Mullum Music Festival’s featured artists for this deeply important contemplation. Presented in the format of Renew Fest’s “round panels”.
