“Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST.” Frank Zappa Welcome to the 10th Anniversary Mullum Music Festival, a 4-day weekend all about music, which is the best! Over the last 10 years I’ve been lucky enough to spend my time programming music that is diverse, for all ages and all types of people – with no exclusions. Artists from all over the world have shared stages with local musicians to perform in the enlightened and friendly town of Mullumbimby. Alongside our music program, we have made a commitment to a light footprint (see our Community Program page 50-53) and giving young, local musicians a leg up with the amazing Youth Mentorship Program (page 36). We have forged many wonderful partnerships with local schools, educational organisations and businesses including Spaghetti Circus, The Neighbourhood Centre, The Byron Bay Writers Festival, Byron Shire Council, The Mullumbimby Chamber of Commerce and many more.

We have presented incredible artists from all over the world, whilst still managing to keep the festival unpretentious and homely. As always there will be many wonderful collaborations, special festival moments, workshops and masterclasses as well as the return of the piano bar (my favourite venue) and the unmissable New Orleans-esque Street Parade. The Mullum Music Festival is a wrist banded event. Wearing the official festival wristband gives you access to all the venues involved. It’s inevitable that some gigs will be more popular than others, so please get to your ‘must see’ shows early to avoid disappointment as venues do fill up. If a venue is full, then don’t stress, there is always another great act just across the road, or next door, that will have space. Please respect the town and the neighbours of venues, and at the end of the night leave venues quietly. Have a wonderful 10-year celebration and see you at the festival.

Though the festival does give the local economy a bit of a kick each year, it’s not why I started it back in 2008. I started it because I like music. As Zappa said, it’s the best! I felt there was room for a festival that did things a bit differently. I’m so proud, looking back over the last 10 years, I can confidently say we found our audience. The festival is now firmly established as a music event of national significance and a festival that showcases new, emerging music, along with career artists and local artists.

REvIEWS Jewel in this area’s crown.

The street parade kicks off the final day of a festival which shares a Shire with some of the country’s biggest. Bluesfest, Splendour In The Grass and Falls all run around here, but it’s Mullum Fest which is truly the jewel in this area’s crown. Written by Samuel J. Fell Rolling Stone, 2016

An unmitigated delight.

Sometimes you find the brightest treasures way off the beaten track and Mullum Music Festival is one such hidden gem, the boutique festival being not so much embraced by the locals as becoming happily entwined with the entire surrounding community. Written by Steve Bell themusic.com, 2014

The emphasis is on fun rather than earnestness. Nut farmers, Indigenous musicians and altpop pantsuit wearers share the limelight with a faux Russian folk choir at this small-town festival that spans Mullumbimby’s main street. Written by Andrew Stafford The Guardian.com, 2016

Secret of the perfect festival: ditch the headliners and focus on talent.

The Mullum Music Festival laughs in the face of accepted festival orthodoxy. There is no mainstream headline act to attract the undiscriminating mug punter. … The result is an intimate, friendly, unpretentious festival for those who love music. Written by Bruce Elder Sydney Morning Herald, 2011

Music festivals transcend the norm and The Mullum Music Festival brings it home to mama. Home is where the heart is, and in Mullumbimby you will find a whole lot of heart, and soul, and funk, and reggae, and rock, and roll and so, so much more. This is a feast for the senses, not to mention feasts abounding in and around the streets and venues of Mullumbimby with the best coffee, the best cakes, the best food and the best of friends. Written by Marika Bryant Australianstage.com.au, 2012

The MMF is a proud sponsor of Bay FM, totally volunteer powered, the most easterly station in the nation.

Jon Cleary and The Monster Gentlemen (US)

Frazey Ford

Described by many as the funkiest band in the city that has the funkiest musicians in the world, Jon Cleary and The Absolute Monster Gentlemen are the gem in the New Orleans crown - a four-piece riot of gospel harmonies and foundation rocking grooves - a southern soul band like no other.

“Don’t be fooled by the glittery jumpsuit. Frazey Ford is out for blood” (National Public Radio, NPR)

Running the full gamut from second line street beats to old school rhythm and blues, the party is propelled by Cleary’s vocals and dazzling piano chops. Bonnie Raitt described him as “the ninth wonder of the world”. Cleary is in high demand landing him alongside Taj Mahal, Doctor John and jazz man John Scofield but he maintains that there’s no bigger thrill than the electricity generated when the Absolute Monster Gentlemen take the stage.

(CAN)

Canadian singer-songwriter Frazey Ford is bringing her smooth, opulent and electric voice to our 10th Mullum Music Festival. She is the founding member of the critically acclaimed group The Be Good Tanya’s, who garnered high critical praise for both their recordings and fun, impressive live performances on the folk and bluegrass circuits. For ‘Indian Ocean’ (2014), her second solo album, she teamed up with Al Green’s trio, the Hi Rhythm Section to emphasise her sensual and fierce vocals. This record tells of the pain of dealing with tough truths but also about trust, love contrition and being bold. Further highlighting her self-possession, power and passion which hit the essence of Aretha’s notion of R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Too Many Zooz (US)

“We pride ourselves that nearly every person of every colour, creed and background and upbringing can find something in our music to relate to,” Matt Doe says. “Someone from Cuba can say ‘I hear Cuban music in the cowbells.’ Someone into death metal will enjoy it next to a grandmother who hears it as old swing music.”

After a video of their busking days in the New York Subway went viral on reddit in 2014, their electrifying, genre-defying musical and visual mastery captured almost a million fans instantly. Beyoncé was caught up in the groundswell and couldn’t resist collaborating with the trio on her latest album Lemonade.

Gabriel Garzon-Montano (US)

On his debut LP, ‘Jardín’, Garzón-Montano sings of the struggles and uncertainties of the many-layered game that is America today. From the specific doubt and double consciousness of the first-generation hustle, to the universal challenges of love, legacy, and exploring the maze of one’s own mind. A child of immigrant parents - his diverse aesthetic is an extension of his mother’s rigorous classical instruction (from her days with the Philip Glass ensemble) and his long-honed skills, studying Prince’s lyrics, and absorbing the beat theses of Timbaland, Dilla, and Pete Rock. Garzón-Montano’s innate pop sensibilities, and his indisputable knack for fusing a wide range of classic influences and cutting-edge ideas to create a sound all his own, appears at Mullum Music Festival for the first time in 2017.

We are thrilled to have Too Many Zoos help us celebrate our 10th Mullum Music Festival.

Husky

Lindi Ortega

Z-Star Delta (UK)

Classic country is an indelible part of Ortega’s musical history, however her latest release ‘Til The Goin’ Gets Gone’ sets the tone for her next chapter: “I’ll always love Loretta, Dolly and Patsy. But I just want more space. I want more ambience.”

Z-Star Delta are an explosive duo from the UK that feature the electrifying award-winning frontwoman Zee Gachette (deemed “one to watch” by BBC Radio), and guitar prodigy Sebastien Heintz, who together effortlessly deliver a fascinating cinematic road trip of sound.

(CAN) “Magical, hypnotic folk indie-rock melodies… filled with catchy but dark lyrics” – The Music Husky first played Mullum Festival in 2011, as their mesmerising folk-rock was gaining a following having just won triple j Unearthed and the release of ‘Forever So’. Following the huge success of their Youth Mentorship in its inaugural year, they have agreed to do so again for the 10th festival. Though a stylistic expansion on their folk-rock roots, their latest release ‘Punchbuzz’ looks to emulate that earlier success, with the first single ‘Late Night Store’ achieving high rotation on triple j, and 3.2 million spins in the first month on Spotify.

It’s precisely this, combined with Ortega’s fatalistic perspective expressed with her evocative soprano, that grips your attention throughout her new EP. This stylistic diversity has earned her highly coverted place in both the indie and mainstream country scenes landing her support spots with artists ranging from Carrie Underwood to Chris Stapleton.

The duo’s bewitching raspy blues tones, big acoustic guitars and swampy grooves, laced with dark desert slide, psyche blues guitars and synth, make for a beautifully dangerous concoction ranging from the acoustic sublime to high octane rock. Just in time for their third Australian tour, comes news of their debut double-sided single release ‘I Put A Spell On You’ & ‘Sweet Lovin’ Chains’.

This Hawaii based singer/ songwriter pours every ounce of his soul into fusing fiery blues, jazz, rock and soul that has to be witnessed live to be fully appreciated. His explosive soul vocals and funk guitar licks have an irrepressible urgency and passion that entrances audiences and peers alike leading to undeniable comparisons like Gary Clark Jr. meets Marvin Gaye & James Brown.

Harry James Angus Struggle with Glory Sat 18th 9:00pm High School Sun 19th 5:45pm Civic Hall

Harry James Angus, the firebrand trumpet-playing vocalist from The Cat Empire is known both for his thrilling live performances and for his constant musical re-invention. His dynamo new live project, Struggle With Glory, continues to cross musical boundaries, transporting the classic Greco-Roman myths into a surreal world of old-time jazz and gospel music. If you like toe-tapping, humming in the aisles, sweating and shouting, but don’t particularly like going to church much, why not try shouting Zeus instead? Revenge, giant beasts in strange lands, the doomed love affairs of Gods and men, and the unstoppable torrent of fate is served up with rich vocal harmonies, barrel-house piano and the unmistakeable sound of Harry James Angus’ old dented trumpet.

Marlon Williams & The Yarra Benders (NZ)

“Each song is a character”, says Marlon Williams of his self-titled solo debut: a remarkably assured and diverse nine-track tapestry, united by one of the most versatile and evocative voices you’ll hear. “I don’t really ever sing out of character. Even if it’s a very personal song, once it’s written it doesn’t belong to me.” Described as “the impossible love child of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison + Townes Van Zandt”, a veteran at the age of 25, Williams won Best Male and Breakthrough Artist at the 2015 NZ Music Awards and has a bunch of nominations for ARIA’s, Taite Music and Australian Music Prizes. We welcome Williams back for his 3rd Mullum Festival following his 2016 album release, extensive international tour including performances at major festivals Latitude, Longitude, Austin City Limits and on TV shows Later With Jools Holland, Conan and The Late Late Show. Moussa Diakite Mama Kin & Wassado Spender

Tinpan Orange

“Brilliant, Unique, Inspires 4 Stars” -The Australian

Tinpan Orange are one of Australia’s most revered lo-fi folk trios. Led by the unmistakeable voice of Emily Lubitz alongside her brother, guitarist Jesse Lubitz, and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Alex Burkoy. Their critically acclaimed album, ‘Love is a Dog’ was lauded a “strikingly assured album” (Rolling Stone) and nominated for Best Folk Album (The Age Music Victoria) due to its razor-sharp melodies and cinematic string arrangements.

(MALI/AU)

Moussa Diakite emerged from the golden era of Malian music in the 1970s & 80s as one of its most influential and respected lead guitarists. He’s performed with the seminal Super Rail Band de Bamako, the legendary Toumani Diabaté’s Yanga Orchestra and Salif Keita. Diakite’s new band Wassado will be showcasing tracks from his 2016 release ‘Doncomodja’, a dynamic mix of traditional Malian influences fused with blues, jazz, Cuban and Afro-rock.

From heart-stopping ballads to percussive beats steeped in soul, Mama Kin Spender is the love project that had to happen. Drawing on the musical synergies of two long-time friends, collaborators and mischief-makers, Mama Kin Spender is both urgent and stirring, seeping into the cracks where binding harmonies and the power of the voice reside. The duo traverse the spectrum of sound from tender to stomping, where brooding raw guitar tears at the heart while drums and percussion give primal force. From dark to light, inward to outward, Mama Kin Spender is a bewitching collision of alchemy, harmony and percussive wizardry.

After touring Europe in 2016 with The Cat Empire, the band returned to Germany and France in early 2017, followed by a string of Australian shows in March including highly regarded appearances at Panama Festival, Yackandandah, Bello Winter Music and Nannup Music Festivals.

Vance Gilbert

Ollie Liz McGill Trio Stringer

The wonderful Vance Gilbert performs at Mullum Festival as part of our collaboration with Woodford Folk Festival’s ‘Festival of Small Halls’.

Returning to Mullum Festival, Ollie McGill (The Cat Empire, Jackson Jackson, the Genie, The Conglomerate) has had a keen ear for jazz and improvisation from a young age. Teaching himself songs from the radio and performing in several acid jazz/funk/ soul bands throughout high school, he continued honing his musicianship under the wing of pianist/educator Steve Sedergreen. It’s this varied career and dizzying amounts of globetrotting that has given Ollie his truly unique and colourful take on jazz.

Vance Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90’s when the buzz started spreading about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking ‘em dead with his dynamic and evocative live performances at folk open mics. Ten critically acclaimed albums later, Gilbert continues to refine his unlikely union of humour, virtuosity, and the unexpected. Whether with classic, original songwriting or ageless interpretations of covers, his live performances are steeped in bravery, stunning artistry, soul and contagious, unbridled joy.

Delighting audiences with her melodically rich storytelling has earned Liz’s reputation as one of Australia’s most respected, critically acclaimed songwriters. Her powerfully engaging stage presence has seen her tour with The Waifs, Eric Bibb, Mia Dyson, Ron Sexsmith and The East Pointers. We are thrilled that she will be returning to help us celebrate the festivals 10th year.

Get ready for the return of this festive and spirited multi-lingual journey of toe tapping folk tunes from the UK, Europe, Africa, the middle East, across the Pacific and right here in Australia.

They are hairy, they sing in Russian but they don’t speak the language, and they love vodka.

Ethno is an international program for folk, world and traditional music that for the last 25 years has built a democratic peer-to-peer learning approach whereby young people teach each other the music from their countries and cultures. The Australian arm formed its inclusive, global collective of influence, tradition and culture in 2011 showcasing the diversity of origins with a strong focus on Indigenous Australian culture and traditional song-lines. Come join some of the best young folk artists from across Australia and around the world as they uplift and inspire with their new collaborations and interpretations of traditional tunes. Opening Night Civic Hall

Mullum’s mighty 28-man Russian chorale DUSTYESKY are getting prepped for a return for their third run of shows at the 10th Festival. Much has happened since the lads’ debut for Mullum Festival in 2014, including performances at Falls Festival, Woodford Folk Festival & Bello Winter. But it’s not just here that the rat-bag choir are winning over fans, earlier this year a Russian-Australian newspaper featured a story which led to a media avalanche. The story was syndicated around Europe - culminating in appearances on the Russian national television, broadcasting to 250 million+ audience. Catch the vodka swilling mob before their 2018 Russian tour is booked. “The Dustyesky Russian Male Choir brought the house down at last night’s opening of the 2014 Mullum Music Festival” - The Byron Shire Echo

On the couch with Joel Salom Brian Nankervis For the past 11 years, Brian Nankervis has been writing, producing and co-hosting the SBS music quiz show, RocKwiz. With a vast and varied career, including being a onetime member of TISM, Brian has performed, written and produced for television including hospital soap opera Let The Blood Run Free as well as regular appearances on Hey Hey it’s Saturday as tortured beat poet Raymond J. Bartholomeuz. He has written and contributed for The Age, ABC Radio and Three Triple R. Brian returns to Mullum Festival for another round of ‘On the couch’ sessions, where he invites various musicians to join him to share anecdotes, a laugh and maybe even a song or two. When Brian gets up close and personal with artists on the bill, expect the chance to hear from musicians in a way you rarely get to.

Joel Salom - International Man of Circus. International Man of Circus, Joel Salom, combines show stopping routines with tales of spectacular failure... His formidable juggling once put a woman in hospital. His head once made an entire room full of children burst into tears. And at his own wedding, his act somehow managed to both disappoint and offend approximately 100 Chinese people. The real question, however, is who the hell performs their act at their own wedding? Joel Salom does. Good times. Rated M. Recommended for 15 years and over . Containing adult themes and mild coarse language.

Mandy Nolan

The Coconut Kids

Sal Kimber & The Rollin'

Small town show girl Mandy Nolan is not afraid of milking the sacred cow. We welcome back Mandy’s sharp, honest, somewhat outrageous and sometimes self deprecating humour to the Opening Night Gala.

“A powerful Adele-like voice that will be sure to blow you away” - Independent Clauses (US)

Mullum Festival favourites Sal Kimber & the Rollin’ Wheel are a band steeped in talent, personality and connection who inspire both toe tapping and heartstring tugging every time they take to the stage.

With 30 years of stand-up comedy under her belt, her poignant take on the human condition and the absurdity of the world has earned her a weekly following for her column in the Byron Shire Echo and appearances on ABC’s Q&A, SBS’s Insight, Mums The Word & About Women. In full flight this girl is a force of nature!

Opening Night Civic Hall

Infectiously fun, The Coconut Kids defy genres to create French-influenced world folk using ukulele, brass, bass, keys, violin, mandolin, percussion and powerful vocals. Their unique sound will have you dancing one minute and in tears the next. Their quirky charisma and brand new single “Un De Plus” has cemented them as festival favourites across Australia, landing them a highly coveted performance at the globally renowned music festival South By South West (Austin, Texas) before gearing up for their 2018 European tour.

Wheel

Described by Rolling Stone as “Australiana alt-country at its finest”, Sal’s authentic and warm stage presence, coupled with the soulful and playful chemistry of the close-knit band has seen them win over audiences Australia-wide.

Stella Donnelly

Strange Daddy

Áine Tyrrell

Stella Donnelly has forged her way to the forefront of the new guard of songwriters in Australia, forging her own unique identity with the release of her first critically acclaimed EP ‘Thrush Metal’. As Triple J’s Unearthed Feature artist, her first singe ‘Mechanical Bull’ has spread like wildfire and been lauded for its lyric’s brutal honest and jazz-folk sensibilities.

No, Strange Daddy is not a sex toy but a rock and roll blues artist with a dirty cockroach infused sound which you could find if Ram Jam and Jack White managed to procreate.

Like many Irish troubadours before her, there’s a great storytelling tradition at the heart of Áine Tyrrell’s music, along with distinct musicianship and an equally deft touch with a killer hook or a heartrending lament.

It’s this intimacy that will leave you feeling like you’ve known Stella all your life.

In 2016 the Strange Daddy single Voodoo Hack was featured on FOX’s worldwide hit Lucifer and IFC’s Benders gaining a global tribe of Strange followers. Their debut EP ‘I Like It Strange’ was created by screen composer and music producer Ben Rosen (Grinspoon, Marilyn Manson, Muse, Bob Dylan, Unwritten Law, Nikka Costa).

That’s the story that has unfolded since performing in at Mullum Festival last year for the Australian-based Irish singer Tyrrell’s extraordinary career. A beautiful meeting of like-minds in which Tyrrell’s seductive, mournful voice, atop a stirring Celtic soul romp, is given a little extra finesse by her good friend Hansard on her new single ‘Don’t Be Left Crying’ from her 2017 EP ‘Fledgling Fall’. Hussy Hicks

Ladyslug

The Twoks

“Nothing short of breathtaking” X-Press Magazine

Spawned amongst the mist of Cuban cigars and honey in early 2016; Ladyslug are the melting pot of nu-jazz & eclectic soul that blew audiences away at Mullum Festival last year.

Melbourne-based drums and violin duo make infectiously happy dance music with epic, layered instrumentals, live looping and electronic effects pedals. Since performing at Mullum in 2014, the irresistible pair have continued touring the world appearing at festivals like Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Falls Festival, DARK MOFO, St Kilda Festival and Melbourne Festival.

Gold Coast Music Award Artist of the Year Winners Hussy Hicks’ unique approach spans boisterous blues and roots, to contemporary folk fortified with soaring vocal harmonies, alt country inspired tales from the road to 80’s style power ballads. The formidable acoustic duo are highly regarded for their musicality by their fellow musicians and international audiences alike, their interactive jamming and killer guitar licks have landed them onstage with the likes of Michael Franti and Edward Sharp to the Indigo Girls.

Carving soundscapes that traverse a plethora of genre, era and influence. Fusing hectic polyrhythmic keys, a phat rhythm section, euphonium, sax, and lead vocals that kick you to the curb Ladyslug’s sound is a curvaceous navigation between the chaos and the calm.

“Sure you could compare this to Haim but it’s also got that nod to Tango era Fleetwood Mac with an attention to hook details and pop precision.” Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J Unearthed musical director Fri 17th 8:00pm Poinciana Festival Club
