Mayor’s message There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind. Duke Ellington
festival patron The Mullum Music Festival is all
about good music, and for our ninth festival we present possibly our most adventurous program thus far. From Boise, Idaho, superb singer/songwriter Eilen Jewell returns to Australia for two very special performances. Billie Holliday, Peggy Lee, Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Gillian Welch, Hank Williams, Jolie Holland – just some of the comparisons Eilen Jewell has received. Check out her band and decide for yourself. From Vancouver blues and roots sensations The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer makes the journey down under, as does fellow Canadian blues artist Matt Andersen. An artist not to miss is 20 year old Memphis born Julien Baker, who’s debut album “Sprained Ankle” was deservedly voted in the top 5 albums of 2015 by New York Times music reviewer Jon Caramanica. The phenomenal Nattali Rize (AUS/JAM) will perform with her new 5 piece powerhouse Jamaican/ Australian band, along with legendary Aussie funk band Skunkhour. Back in the 90’s Skunkhour swam against the grunge tide. They were pioneers of a new genre, leading the way for others to follow. Yirrmal, the standout hit of Bello Winter Music in 2016, will perform Mullum for the first time along with Gareth Liddiard from the Drones, Olympia, Lior, Tash Sultana and Henry Wagons.

Festival favourites returning include Jordie Lane, Fourplay String Quartet, Hat Fitz and Cara, and VulgarGrad. I am proud to announce that Suzannah Espie is our 2016 festival patron. Suzannah has played Mullum many times and is always a crowd favourite. In 2016 we will be transitioning towards a festival free from disposable plastic water bottles and cups. We are asking all festival-goers, crew and artists to bring re-usable water or drink bottles to the festival. Water refills will be offered at all festival venues and a filtered water station will be in place outside Santos Organics. Re – usable drink bottles and cups will also be available for purchase at the Renew Fest stall all festival. To get into the spirit of plastic free, Renew Fest have programmed this year’s MMF Community Program, which includes forums on plastic solutions, renewable energy, sustainable development and waste sustainability at festivals. The Mullum Music Festival is a wrist banded event. Wearing the official festival wrist band gives you access to all the venues involved. It’s inevitable that some gigs will be more popular than others, so please get to your ‘must see’ shows early to avoid disappointment as venues do fill up. Please respect the town, don’t litter, and leave venues quietly at the end of the day. Have a wonderful four days of music. Glenn Wright Director Mullum Music Festival
Mayor’s message
festival patron Welcome to our much loved festival, housed across our wonderful town of Mullumbimby. Sure the Ethno Folk Orchestra, an international folk music initiative bringing together 35 musicians from around the globe, is going to be brilliant, but the hardest bit really will be to try and fit everything in over this weekend of incredible local and international music. We in the shire love the Mullum Music Festival: it supports all levels within the community including planting seedling number 6000 at it’s 6th annual Tree Plant, in partnership with Byron Shire Council, Brunswick Landcare , as well as launching many careers of young musicians as part of its Youth Mentorship program. Also, with the help of Renew Fest, Mullum Music Festival is also working towards becoming a plastic free event. I encourage you to bring you own water bottles and reusable cups, or buy them at the Renew Fest stall. See you somewhere in the festival! Cr Simon Richardson Mayor, Byron Shire Council
I’ve been playing festivals both here and abroad for over 20 years, and Mullum is by far and away one of my favourites. I have been lucky enough to appear at the festival many times now and over the years I have come to feel like Mullumbimby is a home away from home. The festival really does seem to seep into every corner of the town, and every bartender, shop owner and waiter seems to be totally enthused by what is going on. There are so many members of the community that I now call friends from my time playing at Mullum, I can’t really think of another festival where I have felt that connection with the place. It’s such an honour to be invited to be the patron, I can’t wait to start giving something back to the community that has given me so much. I am particularly looking forward to working with other women, whether it be collaborating with some of my peers or mentoring young women who are newer to the biz; being a woman in the music industry is a unique experience and I relish any opportunity to band together with and encourage others to follow their path as best they can. Suzannah Espie 2016 Festival Patron

EILEN JEWELL
HARPOONIST & THE AXE MURDERER
From Boise, Idaho (US), Eilen Jewell’s honesty, confidence, and respect permeate her music, dating back to her self-released debut - ‘Boundary County’ (2006). Her latest, ‘Sundown Over Ghost Town’, is a masterful culmination of Jewell’s work to date, with American Songwriter Magazine raving - “An undiscovered gem... a layered, shimmering pearl of an album that shines like cut crystal.”
With an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn Telecaster, this powerful duo kick out raw and primal blues, while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy.
(USA)
It‘s hard to categorize Jewell’s music. Alt-country, roots-rock, country-noir, and Americana are used a lot. It’s even harder not to become enraptured by her powerful versatility, stories, and images. And that gorgeous voice that makes you feel like she’s singing just for you.
(CAN)
With influences ranging from the iconic Willie Dixon, to Jack White and Danger Mouse, their distinct sound is smothered in greasy, gritty soul and imbued with funk. Shawn Hall provides the rousing, rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic. It’s the blues, played the way it is meant to be played.

SKUNKHOUR In the 90’s Skunkhour swam against the grunge tide as stellar exponents of funk and hip hop. Not only capturing the imagination of the groove minded, they transcended boundaries, taking rock and indie lovers hostage with their mongrel funk. Ahead of their time, while fiercely proud of Australia’s pub rock heritage, Skunkhour fuse many influences. Between 1994 and 2001 the band had 4 songs in Triple J’s hottest 100, performed every major festival in Australia, and toured multiple times throughout the UK, Europe, Japan and America. An absolute powerhouse live, they bring an energy and lyrical dynamic to funk, soul, and hip hop like no other.

MATT JULIEN ANDERSEN BAKER
LIOR
With nearly 10 million views on YouTube, a 2013 European Blues Award, and winning Best Solo Performer at the Memphis Blues Challenge, it appears that the entire world is now discovering Canada’s Matt Andersen.
Lior is one of Australia’s most successful singer-songwriters, renowned for his beautiful voice and songs that radiate truth and sincerity.
(CAN)
A powerhouse performer with a giant voice and commanding stage presence, Matt has headlined major festivals, clubs and theatres throughout North America, Europe and Australia, and has shared the stage with Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Tedeschi Trucks Band and more.
(USA)
Memphis, Tennessee’s Julien Baker has genuinely deep, surprisingly dark stories to tell from her thus far short life. Tales of her experiences are staggering, and when set to her haunting guitar playing, the results are gut wrenching and heartfelt, relatable yet very personal. There’s something wonderfully hypnotizing about Baker gently confessing her soul with such tremendous honesty.
Most artists set out with an ambition to build a career based on musical credibility and integrity, while maintaining an independence and individuality in their craft. Lior is certainly part of that rare breed that has achieved this whilst garnering a great degree of success and critical acclaim.

TASH SULTANA
OLYMPIA
Tash Sultana has had a crazy couple of months, having wrapped up a completely sold out national tour, and announced a string of dates including London, Berlin, and the Netherlands.
Olympia’s voice soars with humble magnificence over a sparse yet pronounced playing of guitars, violins, horns, keys, and drums. Olivia Bartley, songwriter and creative force behind the project, has been a musician since her childhood. A guitar came later but the voice was always there, slowly making sense of the world and all that’s in it.
She has appeared as a Triple J Unearthed Feature Artist, with her online content racking up millions of streams. Tash heads back to Australia later this year for a national run which includes the 9th Mullum Music Festival.

GARETH LIDDIARD
(The Drones)
With an EP under her belt, Olympia recently released her debut album, ‘Self Talk’ to critical acclaim - a world of heart-stopping melodies, rich sonic intrigue and big ideas.
Frontman for legendary Australian band, The Drones, Gareth Liddiard is a composer and director of whacked out rock and roll music that straddles the line between completely outmoded anachronism and soothsayer like vaticinators. For his troubles he has been awarded, lauded and applauded. Extremely prolific, Liddiard has released more albums than you can count. His 2010 debut solo album, ‘Strange Tourist’ garnered an Aria nomination for best male artist.

HENRY WAGONS
YIRRMAL
Mix Nick Cave’s growling menace with Elvis Presley’s gold lamé swagger, add in Lee Hazlewood’s twisted melodramas, and a hint of Johnny Cash’s hangover blues – and you get Henry Wagons.
Yirrmal Marika, a young Yolngu man from the community of Yirrkala in North East Arnhem Land, is an inspiring songwriter and guitarist with a beautifully powerful voice. He is the son of Witiyana Marika, a singer and dancer in Yothu Yindi, and is related to Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.
& THE ONLY CHILDREN
Possessing a voice as deep and dark as a moonless desert night, Wagons’ wickedly dark wit draws the listeners’ attention, leaving no doubt he is Australia’s ultimate outlaw countryman. “Like Dr Seuss meets Conway Twitty.” – Justin Townes Earl.
JORDIE LANE
& THE SLEEPERS
Yirrmal is a refreshing singer songwriter, singing songs about his homeland and culture with feeling and depth beyond his years, engaging the hearts of all who are lucky enough to hear him.
Born to a comedian & a clown, Lane spent his early years in a traveling circus. His nomadic touring lifestyle and knack for comedic storytelling confirm the theory ‘one is a product of their upbringing’, but when you watch Jordie perform it is his incredible voice and rhythmic guitar playing that seem like they come from another place and another time. Jordie Lane returns to Australia to celebrate his first full length album in 5 years, GLASSELLLAND (pronounced Glas-Hell-Land).

HAT FITZ & CARA ROBINSON This dynamic two piece are a unique combination that have skillfully combined their hill style Gospel blues with old timey flavourings. Stripped down to just voices, guitar and vintage drums, Hat Fitz & Cara embellish impeccable rootsy originals with powerful and soulful vocals reminiscent of a time once forgotten. They have been referred to as festival favourites globally, as it is not just a live show of their repertoire they share, but a personal invitation into the parody of their lives on the road together that often has their audiences in tears of laughter

FOURPLAY STRING QUARTET Australia’s favourite electric string quartet, FourPlay began life playing mostly covers. Last year’s ‘This Machine’ was their first album of 100% original material, and arguably their finest, most intriguing long-player to date. What’s in store? Epic soundscapes, rock ‘n’ roll, chainsawing violas, jazz, eastern influences, pop songs. They have wowed audiences at New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall and London’s Barbican Centre. Intriguing, intellectual, unconventional and always gloriously eccentric, these string players are true musical innovators. “FourPlay take to their material with all the gusto of a bunch of scuzzy, angrier-than-thou punks, sounding invigorated and inspired at every turn…” - Mess & Noise

SAHARA BECK
AJAK KWAI CLAIRE (SOUTH SUDAN) ANNE TAYLOR
There are no big name producers and over the top stylists here. Sahara Beck is an independent artist in the truest sense of the word.
Ajak Kwai’s music is inspiring and soulful, infused with funky afro-beats representing the depth and richness of her South Sudanese roots. Her performances are filled with vibrant sounds and her distinctive voice has mesmerised audiences nationally and internationally.
She has toured the country and performed at countless festivals (Bluesfest, Queenscliff, BIGSOUND, The Planting, Bello Winter Music) while sharing the stage with artists including Ben Lee, Art of Sleeping, Darren Middleton, Katie Noonan and many more. “Beck’s voice is a tempest, gale force one minute, sultry the next… Impressive, in a word.” Rhythms Magazine
Sun 20th 4:00pm High School
Singing in Arabic, Sudanese or English, Ajak conjures a vivid picture of her Dinka heritage. A compelling storyteller, her music tells the extraordinary tales of being exiled from her Upper Nile home, to gospel singing in Cairo, to starting afresh in Melbourne in 2007.
Claire Anne Taylor’s soulful folk songs capture the human experience with vivid storytelling, hypnotic melodies and raw, soultinged vocals. She has a powerful voice and rare, emotive style of delivery that evokes deep emotions in her listeners. JULIA JACKLIN She’s wry and funny and quick to catch a joke. In fact, Julia Jacklin thought she’d be a social worker. Her song writing is coloured by a blunt honesty and prickly insight, somewhat disarming for people who’ve never talked about their feelings. WILLIAM CRIGHTON
SAL KIMBER TINA & THE ROLLIN’ HARROD WHEEL
William Crighton has stamped himself as one of our most exciting artists, his debut self-titled album introducing a storyteller with a rare depth to his lyrics.
Sal Kimber & the Rollin’ Wheel are a band described by Rolling Stone as ‘Australiana alt-country at its finest’.
Born in NZ, Tina Harrod’s Fijian and Welsh ancestry certainly indicated she might one day become a singer.
Sal’s authentic and warm stage presence, storytelling and antipodean vocals, along with the captivating musicianship of her close-knit band has seen the five piece effortlessly win over audiences all over Australia.
Tina was always surrounded by a rich and varied musical legacy that sparked her own musical passions, joining the legendary Jackie Orszaczky in his soul incarnation, ‘The Grandmasters’ in Sydney’s late 80s.
Sal’s latest album “Southern Light” was captured by award winning producer Shane O’Mara, and is an expansive, soulful route through country, folk, rock and pop.
Now Tina continues to push boundaries and blaze her own path. Like many great artists, her journey of musical discovery continues to unfold…
For the deep voiced songwriter and intense live performer, there were no short cuts taken to arrive at this body of work. Beneath each track are thousands of kilometres, and within are stories wrought of trees and roads and dust, soaked in the essence of our ancient continent.

HAMISH SUZANNAH ESPIE STUART
‘SOMEONE ELSES’ CHILD’ “…Hamish Stuart is always playing the music rather than the drums. Long may I look at a concert bill and have my eyes light up when I see Hamish Stuart’s name.” -John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald. There aren’t many styles drummer Hamish Stuart hasn’t mastered, and the list of musicians he’s played with is even longer. In ‘Someone Else’s Child’, his solo debut, Hamish proved he has a gift for composition as well. A gorgeous exploration of texture and mood featuring collaborations with some of the country’s finest, the release is testament to one of Australia’s greatest, and most humble, musical talents. Don’t miss this rare live performance of this great album at Mullum Festival!
Suzannah Espie has been casting spells over audiences across the globe since she first took to the stage with ‘ GIT’ in 1997. Honesty and directness, while blending subtlety and beautiful melodies reinforces Suzannah’ s standing as one of Australia’ s finest singer/songwriters. Her sound is an intoxicating mix of country, folk, blues and soul. Her voice is a gentle, sweet trill that can move grown men to tears one moment, with an Aretha-esque hellcat belt that can raise the roof the next. Her music perfectly channels the emotion in her songs with great weight and sensitivity, from traditional country to fragile folk.

The Wilson Pickers are an Australian ensemble with an impeccable pedigree. Andrew Morris, Danny Widdicombe, Sime Nugent and Ben Salter – are joined by one of the most sought after multi-instrumentalists -John Bedggood.
Madeline Leman and The Desert Swells create a retro Americana surf sound that is both sinful and soulful, heartbreaking and leg shaking. Influenced by Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and Eilen Jewell, Madeline captivates audiences with stories of strong female protagonists, cowboys and truck drivers who ramble their way through the mundane and the profound. With drums, bass, lead electric guitar, rhythm guitar, and lots of harmony, The Desert Swells are a high energy band not to be missed.
(IRE)
They perform original folk and country tunes, utilising bluegrass instrumentation and superb 5 part vocal harmonies. Their kinship and desire to have a good time whilst playing music together has garnered them considerable favour with live audiences across the nation.
In early 2015 Irish born singer songwriter Áine Tyrrell took the pieces of her life and songs into the desert on a musical and spiritual journey. Recording outdoors beneath the stars, and amongst the red dust of the Australian outback, the fragments took form, resulting in her stunning debut album ‘Queen of Swords’. Áine’s music cradles the spirit of her native homeland, and tips the cap to a notable family history of Irish music tradition.

German born ‘genre bender’ Yeshe has explored all corners of the globe to develop a rich tapestry of sound and a vivid collage of musical culture. After a busy period of songwriting collaborations with long time friend and colleague Harry Manx, and touring with Xavier Rudd & The United Nations, Yeshe has recently returned to the studio to boldly develop his new sound, recording the soon to be released EP “Woven”.
Miss Renee Simone brings her soulful tropical elegance back to Mullum Music Fest. With divine harmonies, percussion, ukulele and guitar you will be taken to your happy place. LEVINGSTONE SHELLY
BROWN
Sydney based band Levingstone is a beautifully crafted five piece creating music that blurs the lines - fusing soul, jazz, rock & RnB - effortlessly taking their audiences on a sonic journey with their infectious groove, standout vocals and killer beats. At times sultry, at others explosive, but always full of groove - the band juxtaposes all of this against an undertone of melancholy to create something at once recognisable and yet noticeably “other”.
Renowned for her guitar skills and endearing stage presence, 22 year old Australian singer/ songwriter Tullara Connors has quickly developed a reputation as one of the country’s brightest Shelly’s band features lilting up and coming performers. harmonies and packs a worldclass rhythm section.
