Publisher’s Note SANDRA G. MALHOTRA, Ph.D

Greetings, All! I hope you had a fabulous, regenerative summer. Are you ready now for beautiful fall colors and a nip in the air? I sure am! We also have a couple of important months upon us — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Certainly awareness of these diseases needs to increase, but let’s take a step back for a moment. Why the hell do so many people get, and die from, cancer? Imma go Beast Mode now and declare that, IMHO, the Cancer Industrial Complex (henceforth CIC) is missing the mark with the prevention and treatment of this disease. To date, billions have been spent by the government and mega-charities on the ever elusive “Cure”. Why has it not been found? Perhaps because with their reductionist viewpoint, they believe the answer lies in identifying the critical gene, magical vaccine, or miracle pharmaceutical. Perhaps that viewpoint is not the best one for preventing, and healing from, this disease? (Certainly it’s a great viewpoint for proliferating the CIC, but I digress!) For example, something which steams my organic rice is the lack of nutrition advice that is given to cancer patients. Patrick Quillin, PHD, RD, CN sums up this situation quite well in an article he wrote for Nutrition Science News1. He states that “Of the 4 million cancer patients being treated in America today, hardly any are offered any scientifically guided nutrition therapy beyond being told to just eat good foods. Most patients I work with arrive with a complete lack of nutritional advice.” Particularly regarding the role of sugar in the diet. I have heard of instances where those on chemo are told to eat whatever they want to gain weight, including doughnuts and ice cream. (Hence our cheeky doughnuts on the cover.) The CIC’s lack of focus on eating organic, nutrient dense foods to support the body’s healing is appalling. Additionally, we know from the field of epigenetics that genes can be expressed or repressed, depending on lifestyle; what you feed your mind, body and spirit. If you’d really like your socks blown off, read Biology of Belief by Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. Bruce is a cell biologist, and he describes how the cells of your body are affected by thoughts. This is not WOO WOO junk…this is SCIENCE… just not the kind that keeps the CIC in rolling in the dough. Another viewpoint is the holistic or integrative one, which believes that chronic disease, like cancer, is due to the complex interplay of physical, mental and spiritual causes; that it’s a multi-variable problem that will not be fixed by a silver bullet “cure”. The variables include the

state of our body (is it toxic or being fed with nutrient-dense, clean foods?), mind (is it toxic or being fed with positive, affirming thoughts?) and spiritual evolution (what lesson is our soul in the process of learning?). This complexity is what we are going to address in this issue. There are no easy answers, but there are things we can do to give ourselves the best chance at sustained health. Most importantly, if a chronic disease, like cancer, does occur, it’s not because you’re being punished or are a bad person. It’s highly likely that deep introspection is needed and that the experience is an important part of your soul’s evolution. So here’s a bat shit crazy idea — let’s not wait for someone else to rescue us by finding “The Cure”. How about we, to the best of our ability, take charge and Live The Cure by nourishing our minds, bodies and spirits every day. By never playing the victim and realizing that bumps in the road are part of our soul’s journey. Let’s not wait for the CIC to put itself out of business, because it never will. Only we can do that. Who’s in?

Tweet @SandraGMalhotra Facebook @RegenerateMagazine P.S. I am not “that kind” of doctor (a Ph.D., not an M.D.) so I do not attempt to give medical advice with this issue. If you are dealing with cancer and working with a medical team, continue to do so, because all of the information provided in this issue can be used in conjunction with conventional treatments. There is no either/or implied. My goal is to provide an integrative viewpoint and my hope is that this information will help you make better daily decisions and achieve a better state of wellbeing. As Maya Angeliou said, “When you know better, you do better”. So let’s never stop learning and doing better. 1

Whole Being Healing RONDA RENÉE On the surface, the causes of illness and disease seem pretty obvious. We “catch” something, we inherit something or somewhere along the way there is a misfire in our DNA and we develop something like cancer.

So, what do we usually do? We go to the doctor, even if it’s an alternative one, and try to correct the physical cause and treat the physical symptoms. But, it’s not quite that cut and dry. You see, we are so much more than our physical bodies. In my work of Divine Navigation™ we engage all four “centers of being” that make up your whole being. Your heart, your mind, your spirit and the physical manifestation of the first three in your body. Each center of being is attributed to a direction. West = Heart East = Mind North = Spirit South = Body Illnesses, ailments and dis-ease can be sourced from any, all or a combination of the four centers of being. By the time you have physical symptoms you have been experiencing an under-expression or over-expression in one or more of the centers of being for some time. As your whole being is comprised of more than just your physical body, treating an issue on that level alone is insufficient. For a true and complete healing to occur, a wholistic approach is essential. Even when it is a South/Body

sourced ailment, there is a core energy in the originating center of being that needs to be addressed in order to assure any external treatment’s effectiveness. If you treat only the physical manifestation without resolving the underlying energetic conflict, chances of recurrence or even failure are exponential. Let’s look at the base energetic spectrum of the common core energies that each direction, “center of being,” holds along with a sampling of common ailments connected to each direction. This inventory will help you begin to identify which center(s) of being your ailments may be sourced from and initial steps you can take to help resolve the underlying energy that is creating the dis-ease.

irregularity or disease of the heart including but not limited to A-Fib, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

West /Heart — Moving from Resistance to Embracing

East/Mind — Moving from Contraction to Expansion

Resistance can take many different forms from self-loathing to blame to control to self-protection. Unresolved emotions, regrets and resentments are also stored in the West/Heart. Cancer gets a ton of publicity but heart disease is still recorded as the number one single cause of death in the US. This includes any form of

Contraction is often created through our unconscious judgements and limited belief systems that block us from seeing the world in new ways and opening up to possibilities and new avenues of thinking. Overthinking and analysis also keep many “stuck in their head” and underutilizing the gifts of the heart and spirit.

8 Regenerate • September/October 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com

Resolving Energetic Conflicts in the West/Heart Many of us carry around the burden of past emotional pain without even realizing it. You may not even be sure what it is that you need to let go of. Releasing and letting go of past pain, grief and heartache is always a good place to start. Here are a few questions to begin your exploration: What is it that I am resisting? What/who is it that I need to embrace? Where can I soften my heart? How do I begin to tear down the protective wall I’ve put around my heart? Who do I need to forgive?

Headaches and in the extreme migraines are the most common ailment connected with the East. This often indicates an overuse of the “lower” mind and a block to the “higher” mind faculties of intuition and illumination.

coating or telling people what you think they want to hear. You might find that at first it is uncomfortable to respond in alignment with your truth over the habit of fulfilling expectations, but with practice it will get easier!

Resolving Energetic Conflicts in the East/Mind

South/Body — Moving from Disconnection to Embodiment

Notice where your thinking takes an automatic “this is the way it is” approach. Begin to open up and expand your field of awareness with these questions: What do I know that I am pretending not to know? In what ways am I blocking my own awareness and intuition? If I was to look at this situation/circumstance/ person from a different angle, what might I learn?

While the South/Body can be the source of its own ailments, all forms of dis-ease sourced from the other three directions will show up in the physical because the body is the physical manifestation of heart, mind and spirit. Being disconnected from any or all of these centers including the body, can lead to dis-ease. When the divinely-designed dance of the four centers of being works in harmony then it brings us the sweetness of life. Diabetes occurs when this is out of balance and there is no joy in your life.

North/Spirit — Moving from Suppression to Expression It is sad to note we live in a world full of people who are not living their own lives. We are conditioned to follow the rules and check off the boxes, making it almost impossible to break away from the crowd, blaze our own trail and be who we really are. Denial of your authentic self will eventually lead to dis-ease. Depression is probably the most common ailment today which is associated with the North/Spirit. Record numbers of people are on anti-depressants and the numbers continue to climb. At the core of depression is the suppression of one’s personal truth.

Resolving Energetic Conflicts in the North/Spirit: Even the smallest acts of expressing your truth can create huge shifts. One of the simplest tools is to to pause before answering a question and check in with what you really feel (West) and think (East). Then respond only with your full truth. No little white lies, sugar-

Resolving Energetic Conflicts in the South/Body: Your body has an amazing built-in navigation system. If heeded, it will point you in the right direction and guide you home to yourself and the life you are meant to live. But in order to access this, you must be fully present in your body. It is surprising how many of us are not connected to our bodies. At the beginning of all Divine Navigation™ programs, I start by teaching how to get into your body and to discern and hear the signals it has been sending you. In order to hear the body you must be in the present moment, and in order to be in the present moment, you must be present in the body. Begin by asking yourself the question “where am I?”. Not where are you physically. Rather, where is your awareness? Your awareness can go anywhere you send it as it is not

attached to your body, but that’s where it is most at home. It can take some practice to locate your awareness but once you do gently invite it into your body, specifically into your upper abdomen, your solar plexus, breathe into that space and practice holding your awareness there. Don’t worry, you’ll get better over time! Understanding that illness and dis-ease are far more than physical conditions is the first step toward true and lasting healing. When we look at the more serious illnesses such as cancer, it is likely the result of a combination and culmination disease in all four centers of being to varying degrees. Working with the core underlying energies in each of the centers of being can exponentially accelerate your healing potential. You also hold our own unique energetic vibration in each of your four centers of being. I call these your Divine Coordinates®. Until you identify your Divine Coordinates® you can work with the common core energies in each center of being and see great results. Once you identify your Divine Coordinates® you will discover more specific ways to work with your unique energy in each direction. Who you are goes far beyond your physical body so be sure your healing goes beyond the physical to whole being healing! Ronda Renée has been called a modern day mystic with “x-ray vision for your soul.” As the creator of Your Divine Navigation System®, Ronda teaches you how to align with your unique energetic soul signature, your Divine Coordinates®, enabling you to fully embrace your Divine Design and live a life of deep meaning, purpose and satisfaction. Mind

Is Your Mind Compromising Your Health? JUDITH ALBRIGHT The last time you had a cold, unspecified ache or pain, or just felt under the weather, did it occur to you your state of mind might have had something to do with it? You may think, "That's a crazy idea — just caught a bug." And you did. However, there may have been underlying reasons why. Commonly these are: • Stress and how you cope or don’t cope with it • Your subconscious beliefs about your health and body Whether we recognize the symptoms or not, stress is a factor of daily life — getting stuck in a traffic jam when you’re late, having an argument with a friend, the car breaking down on the freeway, discovering your checking account is overdrawn, a call from school because your child has gotten in trouble again. However, not all stress is caused by external factors. We can create our own stress through excessive worrying. This can be about things which may or may not happen or continual pessimistic thoughts. While we ordinarily think of stressors as being negative, any situation which makes high demands on you or forces change can be stressful. This can include an exhaustive work schedule, a burdensome work load or a difficult relationship. However, positive events are also included such as getting married, the purchase of a home, going to college, promotion in a job or a move to a new city. For short periods of time stress can actually be beneficial. It helps

you meet deadlines or challenges, keeps you mentally sharp during sports competitions or work presentations. But too much stress can overwhelm the body and make us sick, both mentally and physically. While our bodies are designed to handle short term stress, we are not equipped to handle long-term, chronic stress without consequences. Prolonged stress raises blood pressure, creates tension in the body and compromises the immune system. Not only does a compromised immune system make you vulnerable to all the “bugs” out there, many other problems can be caused or worsened as well. Some of these include: heart disease, pain, depression, weight issues, auto immune diseases, skin conditions such as eczema and sleep disorders. Subconscious beliefs play a large role in the state of your health as well. For over 50 years medical professionals have demonstrated the mind can heal the body through a “placebo effect.” A placebo is a substance which has no known

medical benefits, such as sterile water, saline solution or a sugar pill. A placebo is nothing more than a fake treatment which in some cases can produce very real results. The expectation of the patient is key — the more a person believes the treatment will work the more likely it will. Less known is the placebo effect’s ugly twin, the “nocebo effect.” This is the placebo effect in reverse. If you believe something is harmful it most likely is or will be. Negative beliefs can be extremely harmful to the human body. According to Bruce Lipton, a former medical school professor, research scientist and author of The Biology of Belief, we are what we believe. What we think we believe is not always the case. True beliefs are buried deep within our subconscious mind. Many of our beliefs were formed before we were mature enough to separate fact from fiction. Often we internalized what we heard or were told. Were you often sick as a child and considered to be too frail to have a normal life? How is your health now?

Is there a correlation? As you grew up, you may have heard family members discuss how Alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease or some other debilitating condition “runs in the family.” If it was repetitive, you may have believed these conditions were inevitable and you would succumb to them at some point. If you did, you have set yourself up as a sitting duck. Changing your belief does not guarantee you will never get that particular disease or condition, but it can help prevent it from becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. How can you use your mind to protect and improve your health? Positive thinking is vital, but it won’t change deeply ingrained subconscious beliefs. As Albert Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” If

positive thinking alone could keep us well, many doctors would be out of business and hospitals would be much emptier. Both EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and PSYCH-K® (Psychological Kinesiology) work at the subconscious level of the mind and are powerful tools, both for managing stress and changing subconscious beliefs. Rob Williams, psychotherapist and originator of PSYCH-K®, explains that this technique “is a simple and direct way to change self-limiting beliefs at the subconscious level of the mind, where nearly all human behavior originates, both constructive and destructive.” While appearing deceptively simple, PSYCH-K® is not something to attempt yourself unless you have been properly trained to use it. Find a professional practitioner who can work with you to identify and change

negative beliefs that might be sabotaging your health. On the other hand, EFT is easy to learn and practice at any time. Do yourself a favor and learn more about how these modalities might help you prevent illness and maintain good health, especially as you grow older. Judith Albright, MA, is a stress management specialist who utilizes EFT, PSYCH-K® and The Emotion Code to help people improve self esteem, neutralize stress, and change underlying beliefs that are limiting their lives. The Vibrational Cause of Chronic Disease MONICA CORRADO, MA, CNC, CGP

A very wise teacher of mine told me many years ago that "the thing is not the thing". That was her way of encouraging me to look behind what was showing up on the physical plane for what was causal to its showing up. I have done so ever since, and I use this as a premise in my private practice and in my life. No matter how complicated a situation — or illness — may seem, there is ALWAYS a vibrational cause behind it. There is a reason that exists on another plane. There is always "the thing behind the thing".

Chronic disease has a vibrational cause. In fact, every physical symptom does, “chronic” or not. Things — illnesses and cancers — do not just happen to us. They do not just come “out of the blue”. They are not random. Nor are they "punishments" by a vengeful God. Another wise teacher, or group of teachers, have said that physical symptoms come out of the "oblivious ". There was something going on chronically, that is, consistently, for a very long time, in the background that was not noticed. It was a consistent, ever present, default drive. You may liken it to the DOS program that runs behind the scene in computers. We never see it. We don’t notice it. But it is responsible for how and what things show up for us, and how things work on our computers. And so it is with our lives. We have consistent, chronic, programming — thoughts and beliefs — that run in the background of our lives all the time. They are responsible for what shows up in our lives, both externally (circumstances and events) and internally (with our physical bodies). We are so used to these thoughts and beliefs running in the background that they go unnoticed. Sometimes for a lifetime. Often, until an event

happens in our lives that wakes us up, that challenges us to look, to question, to realize the “feeling tone” that was causal to the distress. In my private practice, I work with people on many issues. Most of them come to me to talk about diet and their need to “eat better” so they can feel better and their symptoms can go away. I love to work with people to help them understand and access good food, real food, lifegiving food. I enjoy a wonderful career of teaching people what I call Cooking for WellBeing, that I define as traditional cooking that helps people to be nourished and provides the physical body with what it needs to be well and thrive. Clean food and the cooking of it provides the foundation for wellness. However, all the good food in the world, prepared in the best way, as well as all the drugs, treatments, surgeries, therapies, cannot buck the current of what someone has going on vibrationally — what someone believes — whether they are aware of their thoughts and beliefs or not. That’s why cancer can be eradicated by surgery but then pop up in another part of the body later. It can do that because the vibrational cause has not been cleared. If you have a chronic illness, there is a chronic

thought or belief pattern that is causal to it. It has created a vibrational field that continues to attract what matches it. This is not new to many of you; in fact, though the Law of Attraction has come into vogue in recent years, it is as old as the law of gravity. Twenty years ago, Louise Hay heralded this idea in her then groundbreaking book You can Heal Your Life. The good news is, vibrations can be changed. And it doesn’t have to be hard. However, in order to be successful, both levels must be addressed, both the target — the physical symptom — and the cause — the chronic pattern behind it. Thankfully, the idea that humans are vibrational beings is beginning to take hold. And there are many beautiful

modalities that can be utilized to help to change your frequency so you may lead a happier, healthier life. Monica Corrado, MA, CNC, CGP is a teaching chef and holistic Certified Nutritional Consultant who is passionate about illuminating the connection between food and wellbeing. A dynamic teacher, speaker, consultant, and author, she lives to share the tools, knowledge and inspiration to cook nourishing, traditional food, and to help people come to balance. Body

Alternatives for Better Breast Health DR. MICHELE LOUISELLE Breast cancer is on the rise. But why? Weren’t we told that early detection with mammography would lead to reduction in breast cancer and a better chance of survival? Is it a coincidence that with the onset of mammography, breast cancer incidences have risen?

As a practitioner, I’ve done my homework, and if there is only one take away from this article, it would be that I encourage all women to do the same. After all, it is your body — do your homework and make the informed decision that works for you. In the article below, I present my view of mammograms and thermograms so that you can have this information at your disposal.

Dangers of Mammography Radiation: Women are largely uninformed of the wide range of dangers that exist with mammography. Most women are told that there is limited exposure to radiation and it is as safe as getting a chest X-ray. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mammography offers a 1,000-fold greater exposure with 1 rad focused on each breast.1 As reported in Wikipedia, radiation increases the risk of cancer and other stochastic effects at ANY dose.2 There really isn’t any such thing as a safe level of radiation as no one really knows the extent this exposure has on genetic predisposition to cancer. We are exposed to toxins in our air, water, food, body care products, etc. so most people are living with an overload of toxins from one source or another. It is almost impossible not to be unless you are doing periodic cleanses and supporting yourself nutritionally. If you are not doing these things, the body becomes overburdened and toxins that would normally be eliminated by the body are

retained in our tissues, potentially leading to cell mutation and disease. Taking this into consideration and realizing that the ionizing radiation from mammograms causes cancer, and that it’s compounded in the tissue year after year, then one has to wonder if there is a correlation to the increase in breast cancer. Whereas the incidence was 1 in 10 as little as 4 years ago, it is now up to 1 in 7 and I see this presented in my clinical findings. Compression: The compression of breast tissue is not only extremely painful for some but can be lethal for others. Most women going for their annual screenings are unaware of physiological changes within their breast tissue, whether it be from fibrocystic changes, development of simple cysts, or cancerous tissue. As early as the 1920’s, a warning was issued to doctors to take care in the handling of cancerous breast tissue. The concern was that if cancer resided in the tissue, the possibility of rupturing the tumor existed and if that happened, the cancerous cells would spread and likely metastasize.3 Thus, compressing a breast with cancerous tumors is ill advised. Repeated exposures and unnecessary procedures: As previously stated, all forms of ionizing radiation cause cancer and repeated exposure over time can accumulate and increase the likelihood of cell mutation. The possibility of mutation is enhanced with genetic www.RegenerateMagazine.com • September/October 2016 • Regenerate

predisposition to various cancers and these genetic variances account for approximately 20% of all breast cancers. The false positives (89%) and false negatives (30%)4 afforded by mammography create unnecessary trauma to a women’s body as a result of the stress and anxiety of thinking you may have cancer. Additionally, there is stress and anxiety from unsupported procedures such as painful biopsies of benign tissue, which is also typically done under fluoroscopy, resulting in even more radiation exposure.

Thermogram in progress.

Overall Limitations: Mammography is simply a screening tool. Mammograms will not tell you if you have cancer, but they will tell you if you have a mass. So what’s the problem? Mammography cannot detect that mass until it has been growing for 8-10 years. Why? Because the mass (whatever it is) has to be big enough for it to be imaged. Also it cannot identify if the mass is benign or a malignant cancer. It is my opinion that the combination of exposure to radiation, potentially harmful compression of the breast tissue, high incidence of false positives, and possibility of unnecessary procedures leaves women in a compromised health position. There must be a better option.

The Alternative That Will Do No Harm Thermography, a technology much older than mammography, has been much refined over the last 10-15 years. It was FDA approved in 1982 as an adjunct screening tool. Diagnostic thermography was first used in the mid 1950’s when R. Lawson discovered that the skin temperature over cancer in the breast tissue was higher than in normal breast tissue.5 Thermography is performed with an infrared camera that images breast tissue and provides the information for a temperature gradient study. It is through temperature analysis performed by Board Certified Medical Doctors that patterns and temperature differences can be detected and suspicious tissue identified. As mentioned previously, screening modalities do not diagnose pathology and will not tell you if you have cancer, they simply screen for abnormalities that need to be further evaluated clinically. Care should be taken when selecting someone to perform the thermography. It is important to make sure they are a qualified licensed healthcare practitioner that has been thoroughly trained in thermography. The facility should have an air controlled room that ranges from 68°72° F and is constant. The camera should provide high definition, high pixilation quality images. The highest definition available on the market as of this writing is 640 x 480 and anything below this will produce an inferior image. The images should be interpreted by a licensed doctor

Conclusion: The unfortunate state of our allopathic healthcare system today is that it is leading us further down the rabbit hole of disease and dysfunction. Long gone are the

I know, I remember those days. This has been replaced by the need to diagnose symptoms quickly and treat them with Band-Aids such as pharmaceuticals and surgeries. Although many caring people enter the medical profession, they quickly find that they are in a system that focuses on creating long-term customers rather than deeply healed ones. My goal is to provide information and modalities that result in sustained health, not the perpetual treatment of symptoms. Health is driven by nutrition, lifestyle, spirituality, happiness, and exercise, just to name a few. Western trained allopathic practitioners are not typically experts in any of these areas because it is not what they were taught. I’d like this article to serve as a wake-up call about the dangers of mammography and the existence of an alternative technique, thermography. Please do your research on both and become informed so that you can make decisions from a place of knowledge and power.

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have a Dream Delivered 28 August 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.

Vagus, Not Vegas!

Getting To Know the Most Interesting Nerve In the Body & How It Can Help Fight Chronic Disease DR. JANE BREWER The vagus nerve might just be the most interesting nerve in the body. It starts from your brainstem and connects to almost every single organ in your body. This remarkable nerve is typically associated with creating a parasympathetic response in the body, which is the opposite of a sympathetic, or stress response. The sympathetic nervous system is like the gas pedal in your car. It’s responsible for the fight or flight response, it speeds up your heart rate, slows down digestion, and down-regulates the immune system. The parasympathetic nervous system is like the brake pedal. It’s responsible for the rest and digest response. It slows down the heart rate, increases digestive activity, and up-regulates the immune system. In order to be healthy, we need both components of this automatic system to be functioning properly; in other words, the gas pedal and the brakes are both necessary components of the car. Our sympathetic system allows us to run from danger and deliver great athletic performance when it’s activated properly. Our parasympathetic system helps prepare our bodies for sleep, and improves digestion and absorption of the nutrients that keep us going. What life is really about is balancing these subsystems of our Autonomic Nervous System. In our on-the-go world, it’s extremely common to live in a sympathetic-dominant state. This dominance is what leads many people down the path to chronic health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, and irritable bowel disease. We can’t always control the stressors that surround us in our daily environment, but there are things we can do to help activate the vagus nerve and turn up the volume on our parasympathetic nervous system.

Cancer, Chronic Disease and the Vagus Nerve The title of a study published in 2014 recently caught my eye: If you have an active vagus nerve, cancer stage may no longer be important. The authors of this study used a metric called Heart Rate Variability (HRV) to monitor the activity of the vagus nerve. HRV measures changes in the rhythm in between heart beats, which has been shown to be highly correlated with vagus nerve activity. The authors of this study were able to illuminate an important connection for us — that people high HRV scores, meaning high vagus nerve activity, had substantially lower

levels of tumor markers present in their system than patients with low HRV scores, or low vagus nerve activity. This was true even when accounting for differences in age and treatment. What does this mean? That even in more advanced stage cancer, higher vagal activity may even protect against adverse effects and increase the odds of recovery.

How to Improve Vagus Nerve Activity The good news for all of us is that we have the capacity to increase the activity of our vagus nerve. This is one of the metrics we keep track of in our NeuroStructural Chiropractic practice, and it helps us gauge the function of our patients’ Autonomic Nervous System in response to their care. A sampling of vagus-activating activities include: • • • • •

Regular exercise Proper nutrition and attention to gut health Yoga Meditation Chiropractic

Increasing vagus nerve activity is, of course, not simply about treating cancer (or any other chronic disease). None of the methods above should be viewed as a stand-alone method of approaching chronic disease treatment. Working on achieving better vagus nerve function is about generating a higher level of resilience for your body, and better equipping it to deal with stress. This isn’t just beneficial for prevention of cancer and chronic disease, it can stand to benefit even the healthiest among us. Regardless of your condition, bettering your body’s ability to adapt to stress is always a positive thing. Cannabidiol (CBD) and Cancer CHRISTY THIEL Have you heard that cancer is not a matter of “if” but “when”? Have you read that 1 out of 2 men and 1 out of 3 women will have a cancer diagnosis according to the National Cancer Institute1? Have you questioned the absurdity of this and asked why? If not, then you need to clear your mental and emotional slate if this is a belief you hold.

There are three main physiological contributors to most cancers: toxicity, nutrient deficiencies or both. Obviously it is easy to see why the cancer diagnoses are rising now. But is cancer preventable? If so then can hemp help? There is a system in our body called the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is deeply rooted into every other system in our body: neuro, organs, tissues, glands, immune and nervous systems. There is nowhere the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is not. The ECS regulates homeostasis in all of these systems. This means it reduces inflammation both in the peripheral and central nervous system and neurologically. It regulates hormones, metabolism and reduces pain, anxiety and depression. Its purpose is to bring the body back to balance and health. If the ECS isn’t ‘fed’ it becomes deficient.

22 Regenerate • September/October 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com

Inflammation is virtually the basic cause of every disease including cancer. The ECS is the missing link for those who are fighting cancer or those who seek to prevent it. So, what does the ECS feed on? Cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of at least 60 types of cannabinoids identified in cannabis.1 It is the primary and most researched phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s extract2. To clarify, hemp and marijuana have different, almost opposite cannabinoids. Hemp is naturally high in CBD and marijuana is naturally high in THC. Therefore, this discussion is about the hemp plant only. Hemp is less than 0.3% THC therefore it will not pose a problem to anyone concerned about drug testing or the psychoactive properties of THC. In the past, I have taught classes on Cancer Prevention

based upon The Truth About Cancer™ video series. This has been a poorly attended class as most people don’t think about cancer until they have been given a diagnosis and the fear sets in. Then they will listen to the experts they feel have the tools to kill cancer. Here are a few pearls about cancerthen back to hemp! • 99% of cancer cells in a tumor are non-cancer stem cells. 1% are cancer stem cells. The stem cell is the only cell that metastasizes. • “You cannot have cancer with an intact immune system. If you have cancer, you have, by definition, a comprised immune system.” Dr. Rashid Buttar. • Cancer cells absorb sugar better than any other human cell — they have up to 19x’s more glucose receptors. • 86% of oncologists said they would not take the treatments they give to their patients Cancer treatment is an individual decision. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, here is how CBD from hemp can help. Dr. Phillip Blair MD, prior to becoming Elixinol’s Senior Medical Director and Medical Director of Pro Health Advisor worked for the US Army as Chief of Primary Care, explains, “CBD from hemp (not marijuana) is the most researched cannabinoid. First, it controls the symptoms of cancer and that of chemoradiation therapy. Secondly, it protects normal, noncancer cells from damage and deterioration, like the intestinal cells in the GI tract. Third it enhances cancer cell death by itself and with chemoradiation therapy. Fourth, it blocks tumor growth by blocking new blood vessel formation, tumor cell replication and metastasis.” Dr. Phillip Blair recommends everyone facing cancer therapy should consider CBD to help and enhance their treatment.

What about cancer prevention and hemp? There is more and more evidence which proves cancer is preventable. I believe it is true and many people feel just knowing that it is preventable have been inspired to develop new habits, deeper personal and spiritual relationships and an appreciation for life. I prefer to keep cancer out of my pipeline and CBD is absolutely in my arsenal of prevention and daily health. Dr. Phillip Blair MD says, “CBD as the smartest molecule in the world. Why? It always does the right thing in the body. How? By balancing the ECS and all the other body systems to restore homeostasis. This is very important because if this system becomes deficient (in cannabinoids) we lose the ability

to self-regulate and start chasing after symptoms like: pain, depression, inflammation, immune dysregulation, leaky-gut, migraines, fibromyalgia, etc. For cancer prevention this simple but profound molecule turns off the LD-1 genes that signals cancer stem cells to metastases! CBD is only toxic to cancer cells! Now that is a smart molecule!” So what’s the buzz about hemp and cancer? Cancer is a disease of toxicity and nutrient deficiencies. It impacts the immune system and goes rogue in the body. CBD from hemp helps your immune system target cancer cells and kills them (apoptosis). It also turns off the metastasizing gene. When a body comes back into balance and health returns, the immune system protects the body instead of attacking it. I will go into many more benefits of CBD and hemp in future articles. For now, investigate the endocannabinoid system and start creating deep rooted health with CBD Hemp Oil. The One Word That Can Save Your Life DR. RONIL PALA

Newsweek magazine published an article entitled, “The One Word That Can Save Your Life.”1 Do you know what it is? When it comes to medical tests and procedures such as CT scans, mammograms, colonoscopies, medications, stents, etc. the one word that can save your life is: NO!!

24 Regenerate • September/October 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com

Here’s why “no” is so powerful — in the case of PSA blood tests for prostate cancer, electrocardiograms to screen for heart irregularities, and mammograms, the research shows they lead to too many false positives. Each false positive results a dangerous odyssey of tests and procedures, according to Stephen Smith of Brown University School of Medicine.1 In short, the research shows that these tests have not been shown to save lives and actually expose the patient to stress and potentially harmful procedures. Dr. Rita Redbird, Professor of Medicine at the University of California, says that more health care often means worse health care. She states, “There are many areas of medicine where not testing, not imaging, and not treating actually results in better health outcomes.”1 Archives, which is owned by the American Medical Association, has been publishing study after study about tests and treatments that do more harm than good. One article goes on to say, “From PSA tests for prostate cancer (which more than 20 million US men under go every year) to surgery for chronic back pain, to simple antibiotics for sinus infections, a remarkable number and variety of tests and treatments are now proving either harmful or only as helpful as a placebo.”1 So, if medical tests and procedures are not the answer, what is? The answer is lifestyle and body function. You can’t concoct a study that doesn’t show that nearly all common diseases, symptoms, or illnesses are induced by how you’re living and how your body is functioning. If problems were simply genetic, then all three brothers would have prostate cancer, both sisters would have breast cancer, and everyone in

the family would die before 60 of a stroke or heart attack. If the problems were simply environmental, then if one person at work or one kid at school got cold symptoms — the whole office or school would have them. But, it never works this way. Many studies show the only reason several people in the family all end up getting a similar condition is because the whole family lives similarly.2,3 Rather than invasive tests and procedures, take control of your health and the way your body

Many people think that health is just something you swallow or if you have great abs, you have nothing to worry about. Yet, if you’re trying to avoid the dangerous tests and procedures, it gets more complex. works. It’s far less expensive than tests, drugs, and surgery. Most importantly, the right habits and doctors that support your body’s function offer no side-effects other than well-being. Many people think that health is just something you swallow or if you have great abs, you have nothing to worry about. Yet, if you’re trying to avoid the dangerous tests and procedures, it gets more complex. By taking in the right nutrients (not just being lighter), by exercising properly (not just being more ripped), and addressing the other essentials like a healthy spine and nervous system

(which controls all body function), you’re taking all of the right steps to be well. When you’re well, you don’t get disease in the first place. Sometimes tests are necessary, but at their best, all they offer is early detection. You still have the disease and as a report above shows, are now exposed to dangerous medical procedures. Follow the essentials of true health that include proper mindset, maximizing nerve supply with corrective care chiropractic, quality nutrients, exercise, and minimizing exposure to toxins. PHOTOS OF FOX FAMILY: CHRISTINA GRESSIANU

DR. TERRY & EMILY FOX

Did you know September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month? Did you know that the childhood cancer ribbon color is Gold? Did you know that 15,780 children in the US will be diagnosed with one of the 12 forms of childhood cancer this year? Neither did I. Until my child was one. I’m Emily, Patrick’s mom.

Halloween 2013 was the last day our family was “normal.” We felt something odd was happening with our 5-year old son. He seemed to be getting skinny. He didn’t want eat, and every meal was a battle. He had bruises on his legs. All of which we were able to rationalize away. What kid doesn’t argue at dinner time? He could be having a growth spurt, etc. We knew when he didn’t feel good enough to go trick or treating, it was time to take him to the doctor. My husband, Terry, took Patrick to the doctor the next day. The doctor was concerned and did an xray that showed something might be wrong with his heart. They sent us to Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver to see a cardiologist. After a CAT scan, the Emergency Room doctor was the first to tell us something was terribly wrong, but not with Patrick’s heart. In a matter of moments everything changed. It was then that we were told a monster had come to live with us. Cancer. T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). We learned he would have to start chemotherapy that night. The image on the initial x-ray was a tumor in his chest that had collapsed one of his lungs and almost half of the other. It has been over 2 ½ years since

that day. In that time, Patrick had a port surgically placed in his chest, spent weeks in the hospital and missed almost an entire year of school. For a while we traveled Denver every week for out patient IV chemotherapy. Now we go monthly for his IV chemo and routine lumbar punctures. Patrick takes oral chemo pills every day and steroids for one week every month. Our Patrick, and our whole family, have gone through so much since his diagnosis. Chemo is a relentless necessity. I’m Terry. As Patrick’s Dad and a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioner, I thought I had a handle on helping him battle his leukemia. I knew what I had to offer my son wouldn’t be a cure, but it would help ease his journey through chemotherapy. And luckily, our Oncologist was very open to working with me. I began consulting TCM teachers, Qi Gong Masters, Herbalists, Chiropractors, Essential Oil Experts, Hypnotists, and Naturopaths. I combed through articles and books. I even researched subjects like CBD oil. Eventually, I decided to start my child on what I knew best — Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture. However, Patrick had a different course in mind. Acupuncture wasn’t comfortable for him. And Chinese

Herbs can taste like dirty socks at any age. So, after several fights, it finally hit me that my son didn’t want another doctor. He simply wanted me to be his Dad. Though I had powerful tools for healing, I had to swallow my fear and professional pride. I was forced to drop my practitioner hat and allow my son the freedom to decide what “alternative” medicines he was willing to use. Patrick agreed to essential oils used aromatically and topically. For his chemo related neuropathy, he allowed me to do acupressure, qi gong, and massage therapy. Occasionally, I could get him to take Chinese Herbs. But not often. His taste buds aren’t that compliant. We have eight more months of chemo before we’re done. It’s been a grueling journey. In the past three years, the best medicine appears to be a combination of gratitude, laughter, and love. There are never enough prayers. There is never enough laughter. We can never give too many hugs. Emily Fox is a Licensed Social Worker at Banner Health, loving mother, and pug snuggler. Premonition Or Poppycock? JESSE WEINER Coincidence or miracle, delusional thinking or divine intervention, most people have experienced something they simply cannot explain. Yet it’s often easier to sweep the things that make us uncomfortable under the rug than to give them a closer inspection. Given a popular culture that espouses intellectualism over faith, it can be difficult to not only speak of such matters, let alone reconcile “reason” and “religion.”

This is especially true in the case of prophetic dreams and visions. Some shrug and think such matters nonsense. Others are constantly searching for a sign. There are many false prophets and misguided people who adversely affect others, but there are also many people doing and experiencing miraculous things every day. When I was a freshman in college, I had a recurring nightmare that my parents would die in a car crash. I’d wake up crying, wondering what was wrong with me. I hadn’t had a traumatic experience, I hadn’t been watching grizzly movies, and I wasn’t that homesick. Not knowing what else to do, I prayed until I fell asleep again. Eventually the dreams stopped. Flash forward to second semester. I’d been planning an ‘epic’ spring break trip, but as the time drew closer I had this inexplicable feeling I shouldn’t go. I cancelled my tickets and came home, opting to spend the week with my parents instead. Thank God I did. Less than a week later, my Father was in a motorcycle accident. He didn’t make it through the night. Only then did I remember the months of dreaming and praying, and I was filled with a strange sense of peace. It was as if God had forewarned me and prepared me for the trauma to come. In my first year serving as a campus missionary my perspective was altered once again. At the time I didn’t have much experience praying with strangers, and to be honest it made me uncomfortable. I’d prefer get to know someone before sharing something so personal, but I wanted to be open-minded. When asked to pray over students on a retreat I gave it a try. Paired with a combative, withdrawn guy, I wasn’t sure

28 Regenerate • September/October 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com

how he’d react. I could feel the tension radiating off him as I closed my eyes and touched his shoulder. Almost immediately a detailed image of a dirt road and a white clapboard house rose in my mind. After we finished praying, I struggled with the decision to share what I’d seen. As I’d never experienced anything like it, I feared he’d think me insane. But the insistent pressure in my chest urged me to speak, and I obeyed. He gave me a weird look, said it didn’t mean anything to him, and walked away. I didn’t see him again until a few months later, at which point I was still so embarrassed I had to fight the urge to hide. Imagine my shock when he ran up to me with a smile on his face. “You’ll never guess what happened!” A few days after the retreat, he was rushed to the hospital with a burst appendix. Frustrated he hadn’t been able to ‘feel’ God, he’d taken the emergency operation as further proof the Creator didn’t love him. However, upon waking, he saw the exact image I had described for him hanging on a wall opposite his bed. So were they premonitions or poppycock? I can’t help but believe God wants to give us guidance. If our purpose in life is to learn to love, it only follows that dreams and visions are meant to both help us grow in our personal understanding of the divine and to help others do likewise. Jesse lives in Fort Collins with her husband, two dogs, and baby girl. She spent two years working as a missionary and holds a certificate in Moral and Ethical Leadership from the Augustine Institute in Denver. She is currently working on her first novel, a Young Adult Fantasy.

Spirit

Nourishing Your Soul PHYLLIS K. KENNEMER

What are you doing to nourish your soul? You are most likely aware of ways to keep your physical body healthy, but how often do you think about the care of your soul. How often do you consciously replenish the life force within you? And how can you do that anyway?

If you think of your soul as the spiritual part of your being, you can visualize it as an open vessel, like an elongated tube or cup, extending through the trunk of your body. When you are filled up with the good in your life, you feel as though that cup is filled to capacity. You have energy and enthusiasm and you are ready for all of life’s celebrations and challenges. But, what about the times when you feel defeated, dejected, and depressed? Those are the times when your cup is near empty; you feel like your energy has leaked out; your soul is in need of nourishment. What can you do? As a first step, think about the values and virtues that sustain you. What do you want more of in your life and what do you want less of? You will likely discover that you want more love and less fear. Lovebased emotions fill your cup; fear-based feelings drain it. The goal is to move out of fear and into love. If you want more love in your life, begin with loving yourself. Many of us were raised with beliefs that are selfdefeating. Were you raised with adages, such as “Don’t toot your own horn!” or “You aren’t good enough as you presently exist”. You might get to be good enough if you lose weight or if you gain weight or if you go to college or if you get a better paying job or if you change the color of your hair or if you get married or if you get divorced . . .well, you get the idea.

The second step in creating a love-filled cup is to empty it of all the fear-based emotions that have taken up residence there. If you are constantly filled with worry and doubt, there is no space available for the exuberant emotions of joy and enlightenment. You can begin this process by consciously changing your self-talk. Keep in mind that every time you begin a sentence with “I am” you are declaring to the Universe that this is who you are. How many times during a day do you say to yourself or others, “I am unattractive,” “I am clumsy,” “I am forgetful,” “I am too old (or young) to do that,” “I don’t have enough money,” “I don’t have enough time to do what I want to do.” Change your thinking. Change your life. Make a conscious effort to replace all those negative statements about yourself and your situation with positive affirmations. Image yourself as the person you truly want to be and think of yourself as that person. You may need some reminders for a while. Write affirmations on sticky notes and place them all around your home – on the bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator door, on your bedside table . . .everywhere! You can block the good from coming into your life with statements such as, “It is more blessed to give than receive.” Yes, sometimes that’s the case, but it is also true that it is blessed to receive. You can keep good flowing into your life by accepting what comes with a grateful heart. Be open to receiving.

Daily spiritual practices help to reinforce your positive thinking. Find what works best for you. You will know when your soul is being filled with what you want most in life. Some people start the day with devotional readings. Magazines, books, and online sources offer daily messages and inspirational passages. These guides can be helpful for beginning each day and setting intentions. Quiet sitting meditation opens the channel for allowing spiritual energy into your soul. Some people also engage in movement mediations such as tai chi, qigong or yoga as ways of making connections with spirit. Have you walked a labyrinth lately? A labyrinth walk offers an opportunity for a moving meditation. As your feet follow the path, your soul may soar into unknown realms. As with all types of meditation, it is a good idea to clear your mind before you begin. Let go of worry,

Quiet sitting meditation opens the channel for allowing spiritual energy into your soul. frustration, and negativity as you follow the path to the center. Many people feel a soul connection with God in the center of the labyrinth. (If the term God is uncomfortable, use a word that resonates – Spirit, Source, Universe.) The return walk from the center is a time for receiving. If you have been successful in releasing the negative energy in your life on the way in, you have lots of space available to fill with the good you desire as you walk out. If you are unable to walk a labyrinth due to weather, distance, or other conditions, you can create the same spiritual experience with a finger labyrinth. These are available in many different patterns, made of a variety of materials. Most can be placed on a table or your lap and you can trace the path with your finger or a stylus. Inspiration can also be found in boxed sets of wisdom and oracle cards. Many types and topics are available. The cards are used in different ways. Drawing a single card from the deck can help to give direction to the day or provide an answer to a question. Each set comes with a set of suggestions. Some of these include different layout patterns to deal with specific situations. Others can be used to establish connections with angels or goddesses. As you nourish your soul, remember that the most important ingredient is self-love. Self-love involves really caring about and celebrating who you are. You are a unique spiritual being. You live in an abundant universe.

From A Healer’s Diary

Welcome Home RENE VILLARD-REID

Many years ago, I had a friend who was playing on a women’s softball team. She’d been up to bat and hit a line drive to center field and took off running. As she rounded second base her foot caught in a hole, which broke her stride and her leg. The fibula in her right calf snapped and shattered. The fibula is the slenderest of the two bones in the calf located on the lateral side of the tibia. A normal fractured fibula will heal within six to eight weeks. However, as hers was shattered, it made healing more problematic. After surgery, it was believed that with time and her youth, the bone would repair itself. However, six months later she was still in an ambulatory cast and considering a second surgery because there had been little improvement. The bone was just not healing . As we both kept hectic schedules, it had been a while since I’d seen her. It wasn’t until she’d invited me to lunch one day that I became aware of her accident. Needless to say, upon meeting her at the restaurant the obvious first question was not, “Hi, how are you?” but “What happened to you?” During the course of lunch she filled me in on the details. Naturally articulate, blessed with a brilliant intellect and with a wit that rivals

Oscar Wilde, she was normally a great story teller. However, this was not the case today. The person sitting across the table looked like my friend, but something had hijacked her spirit and left a distracted, spaced-out individual who struggled to arrange her thoughts into an orderly manner. With concern I commented on my observations and also made mention of the pallor in her skin. She agreed with these perceptions and admitted to feeling spacey and disassociated from present time as if in a constant state of distraction… DEFINITELY not herself. To a shaman, these are code words for a soul loss. As I stated in the July/August issue in SOUL 2 SOUL, soul loss is caused by any kind of trauma which shocks the body or the psyche. An aspect of the soul then shears off, not unlike Peter Pan’s shadow, which wandered away and eventually got lost. Enter Mr. Barrie’s rendition of a shaman in

Wendy, who sews the shadow back onto Peter Pan, thereby reuniting the two and making Peter feel happier and more like himself. Recognizing the problem, I suggested a soul retrieval. Unfamiliar with this aspect of my work, she was somewhat uncertain. Although a practicing Lutheran, she’d always maintained an interest and openness in my metaphysical beliefs. I in turn had endeavored to bridge the gap between religion and spirituality. Together in friendship, we’d always found mutual ground . However, this was new territory. Noting her hesitation, I adopted a lighter, more conversational tone and discussed the process of soul retrieval in psychological and spiritual terms. I also stressed that my involvement was incidental to the healing, as God’s emissaries actually perform the work. She was intrigued and agreed to give it a whirl as “it couldn’t hurt.” We headed back to my practice

and it wasn’t long before she was on the massage table and I was smudging her with sage in preparation for the healing. In a soul retrieval or any other type of shamanic work, the shaman enters an altered state of consciousness and journeys or travels into the dreamtime with the intention of connecting with his/her helpers or spirits. They in turn act as intermediators between this reality and the unseen worlds. Therefore, the first order of business was to connect with my helper and guide White Eagle. White Eagle is a beautiful master being of light who had come to me in a dream many years ago when I was ill. During the dream vision, he healed me and called me to this purpose. Since that time he has acted as a teacher, guide and protector in all my shamanic endeavors. Soon I felt the connection with him and we went in search of my friend’s soul. As I followed White Eagle I was led to a baseball diamond. This would be considered an obvious given as my friend had already imparted this information. However, I’ve been taught to validate accurately the area I am viewing. Speaking aloud, I not only described second base where we stood, but also the outlying area surrounding the diamond. After all, there are a lot of baseball diamonds located throughout the city. My friend validated this information and White Eagle began his work. He approached what appeared to be a crumpled form half laying across the base. He gently lifted her in his arms, turned and we rapidly moved from altered reality back to present time. I waited until I saw him across the table from me. I then reached out to receive the soul and cupped my

hands against her body. I drew in a silvery blue light from White Eagle and blew four breaths into her. This was followed by another four breaths into the top of her head. With my medicine rattle, I began a loud intense rattling which was meant to drive the soul into the body thereby reconnecting it with the physical self. I said the time honored words of “Welcome home” and then asked her to take several deep breaths to further facilitate the soul’s reentry. I mentioned she might feel a little tingling, some heaviness or nothing at all. As I stood beside the table, I observed a flush of color wash away the dead pallor in her face. Suddenly, her eyes snapped wide open. She said, “I can feel my leg. That’s amazing! The whole side of my calf has been numb since it was broken

sparkling dry wit had re-emerged in full force as she cavorted in her seated position like a small kid or a loose-limbed scarecrow. Fast forward to several months later and the doctors were pleased to find that her bone was knitting well. She would over time regain her leg strength and stability and return to sports. Soul retrieval is a powerful tool. It can restore health and healing to a body and mind, but it does require a person who’s been called to the purpose of being a shaman. Taking classes does not in and of itself create a shaman nor does it automatically bestow the needed natural capabilities. It is a spiritual calling, that subsequently requires training, tremendous discipline and must be accompanied by God given gifts and innate ability. The purpose of these articles is to inform and educate the public about powerful alternative ways to heal the mind, body and spirit. Miracles can be a natural part of our everyday world. After all, we are not bodies, but eternal beings embodying the physical for the purpose of fulfilling our dreams and life purpose AND we were meant to be whole in this process on all levels.

I drew in a silvery blue light from White Eagle and blew four breaths into her. and now there’s feeling and tingling in it. Wow!” Before I could advise her to move slowly in getting up, she arose in one swift movement like someone from the dead. Comically, she began to pat her body up and down and with a crooked grin said, “I’m back! I’m back!” Her eyes sparkled in mischief as she placed her index finger against her right temple. She cocked her head and with an arched brow said in melody, “I’ve got a brain!” For someone who has been an economics professor and a business owner, missing her intellectual acumen had caused more distress in some ways than even her injury. MELODY MASTERS, C.N. Balance. A concept many of us can describe in less than 30 seconds. In fact, dictionary.com offers several definitions, and I found this one simple and profound: “a state of equilibrium or equipoise”.

Although offering an explanation or example is easy, achieving a state of balance can feel like an unachievable task. We have families, pets, careers, faith communities, hobbies, education — all competing for our time and energy. Society today is fast-paced, quickly changing and seems to undervalue the precious gift of this life. It is my intention, and has been for over 35 years, to serve our community and surrounding areas by providing support to navigate some of the barriers we encounter along the journey. Here is one very humble truth I live by: disease is a manifestation of imbalance in our bodies, minds or Spirits. To achieve a state of balance, begin with intention and a commitment to increase your awareness. When you decide to truly look at and evaluate your blessings and opportunities, that is where we start our journey together. We begin with Iridology, a non-invasive method for gathering specific information about your physical and emotional well-being. I take a magnified picture of the iris of your eye and we look at it together. This provides information about systems and organs and serves as the analysis tool to identify individual stressors and strengths in order to facilitate your goal setting. I assist with prioritization and we consider modalities to support your specific needs, mindfully considering the options and recognizing that we can’t do everything at once. This is

not meant to be difficult; we focus on a gentle, easy way of healing , and actually, that is what halcyon means. Together, developing a reasonable plan will provide the most potential for consistency and ultimately, success. Suggested modalities may include nutritional counseling, light therapy, biofeedback, aromatherapy as well as potential referrals to additional practitioners. It is my intention that you find encouragement and inspiration. Remember, balance is the key. What we eat, feel, drink, say, and do all require awareness. So, when you are ready, I am here. I look forward to working with you to achieve your optimal health and wellness.

Our Journey to a Holistic Vet for Willy SANDRA G. MALHOTRA When Willy was two months old and cute as a button, we started seeing a conventional vet close to home. They took great care of him when he had parasites and when he took a leap of faith out of the car window one day. (Why he thought he could fly is still a mystery.) Dr. Dave and patient

But I became quite alarmed after Willy reacted badly to the distemper/hepatitis/parvovirus (DHP) vaccination at three months of age. He was awake and whining all night and wanted to go outside many times. It was a sleepless night as he was clearly in a state of distress. Fortunately, by the next morning, it passed and he seemed fine. I felt like we dodged a bullet. Then it came time for the third DHP vaccination at four months of age and I wanted to discuss alternatives because I did not want to put Willy through that again. What if his reaction was worse this time? I wanted to know if we could do a titer

test to see if he had sufficient antibodies and immunity, or skip the vaccination altogether. The only answer I received from the conventional vet was that the third DHP vaccination must be done to finish the series. And not only that, I was reminded again that a couple of non-core vaccinations must also be done, in addition to year-round heartworm treatment. Since “noncompliant” might as well be my middle name, I refused everything and left, knowing that there must be a better way. I loved the level of care and attention the conventional vet practice provided to Willy. They

treated us like family, but unfortunately they were still firmly planted in the western paradigm with a reliance on vaccinations and prescription medications only. I had enough of the pressure and wanted another opinion. After all, I question the conventional western approach for myself, so why wouldn’t I do it for Willy also? After a Google search, I was thrilled to find holistic vet named Dr. David McCluggage at Chaparral Animal Health Center in Longmont, Colorado. WOO-HOO! After our first visit with Willy, I knew that Dr. Dave was the vet for us. He spent one hour getting to know me, explaining his philosophy,

examining Willy, and answering any questions that I had. He also handled my concern about vaccinations beautifully. He explained that he could remove the hepatitis component of the DHP vaccine and give only the distemper and parvovirus portions, supported by a homeopathic treatment that would help the doggie detox after being vaccinated. Dr. Dave felt that Willy’s bad reaction was likely due to the hepatitis part of the DHP combination, so we discussed the pros and cons and decided that the risk of canine hepatitis in Colorado is very low, and likely nonexistent. We proceeded with the DP vaccination and homeopathic treatment, and Willy was just fine. I researched the risk of canine hepatitis more, and am still very comfortable with this decision1. We also discussed the year-round heartworm treatment that the conventional vet pushed. As far as I could tell, heartworm medications are generally safe, but a constant dose of a toxin is still undesirable to me. I researched this topic enough to feel that this was overkill for full-time residents of Colorado. As holistic veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker explains2, “In order for heartworm disease to take hold, a precise sequence of events must occur involving the right climate, the right temperature for the right amount of time, the right species and sex of mosquito, and your dog’s less-thanoptimal immune system function.” She continued2, “During the time the heartworm larvae are developing from L1 to L3 inside an infected mosquito, which is approximately a two-week period, the temperature must not dip below 57°F at any point in time. If it does, the maturation cycle is halted. According to a Washington State University heartworm report from 2006, full development of the larvae requires the equivalent of a steady 24-hour daily temperature in excess of 64°F (18°C) for approximately one month.” So I ask my fellow residents of Colorado, how many months of the

Willy

year is the temperature above 64°F for one entire month? Right. It stands to reason that heartworm medication may not be needed in the winter months, and perhaps not in early spring or late fall. I was so relieved to hear Dr. Dave say that he agreed. He said that my best options were to give the heartworm meds only during the summer, or not at all since the probability of the precise series of events occurring in Colorado is very low. He did not preach, but let me decide what would be best for our furry family member. Dr. Dave’s holistic approach to pet care is like a breath of fresh air. He is a fully trained veterinarian who uses western medicine when needed. However, he also combines conventional approaches with homeopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, western and Chinese herbs, nutraceutical medicine, and physical therapies when appropriate. He likes to teach pet parents how to maintain their pet’s health and stresses the development of a strong immune system, good exercise, and high quality food. What I find really commendable is that Dr. Dave is always thinking about providing his pet patients the best environment for their bodies to heal and stay healthy. He wants to understand the stress of any treatment vs. the benefit. For example, early on in his career, he began questioning the need for so many vaccinations. He now uses titer

42 Regenerate • September/October 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com

tests to confirm immunity and avoids repeating vaccines that the animal does not need. He also questions long hospital stays for animals because that is a stressful environment not conducive to healing. That holds true for us humans, too, right? Instead, Dr. Dave sends pets home as soon as possible along with detailed home care instructions. That makes so much sense! Importantly, Dr. Dave questions giving pharmaceutical drugs that aren’t necessary, or many drugs at once, because of what he calls “other effects” — those effects that don’t just occur on the side, but occur quite often and can be quite serious. His approach is to treat life-threatening problems with drugs and let the body heal the less serious problems. If drugs are prescribed, he’ll recommend a maximum of two at a time, whereas conventional vets can prescribe seven or eight drugs at a time. He’s also very careful about prescribing strong antibiotics because those kill good gut flora. He will use milder antibiotics when necessary, and does not see MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus superbug) in his practice as a result. I am so happy with the care that Willy is receiving at Chaparral Animal Health Center that I had to share our experience with Regenerate readers! I hope that more veterinarians will follow Dr. Dave’s lead. If you would like to visit Dr. Dave with your pet companion, you can learn more at https://www.wellvet.com/ and reach them at 303-702-1986 or staff@wellvet.com. 1

The Technique of Lacto-Fermentation MONICA CORRADO, MA, CNC, CGP Excerpt from With Love from Grandmother’s Kitchen: Traditional Cooking Techniques for Well-Being (Monica Corrado, 2011) by Monica Corrado, a Real Food Chef, Certified Nutritional Consultant and Certified GAPS Practitioner. Lacto-fermentation was originally developed to help preserve foods. To lacto-ferment a food, add and encourage the growth of healthy bacteria, lactobacilli. The lactobacilli give off lactic acid, which is a natural preservative that inhibits the growth of putrefying bacteria. In the process of lacto-fermentation, wonderful things are added to the food to make the food more nutrient rich. It may be considered one of those “value-added processes.” While canning kills the enzymes in the food, making it “enzymatically dead”, lacto-fermentation adds enzymes to food, making it more alive. Lacto-fermentation can also be used to “re-activate” foods that have been canned. Why do we love lactofermented foods and beverages? Lacto-fermented foods and beverages help kick on the digestive process, contribute additional enzymes to it, increase the amount of Vitamin C in the food, produce natural antibiotics and anticarcinogenic substances, help maintain regular blood pressure and heart rate, help break down fats in the liver, help promote the growth of healthy bacteria throughout the intestine, as well as maintain a healthy level of acidification in the body. You will need the following to lacto-ferment a food or beverage:

8. Put the lid on tightly. 9. Place the jar on the counter out of direct sunlight and away from any heating or air conditioning vents, in a place where the temperature is consistently 68 – 72 degrees. (Your room thermometer will help you determine this.) 10. After two or three days at room temperature, check to see if your fruit is “done” by pressing down the center of the lid. When the lid is tight, the process is done and you may place the jar in the refrigerator. 11. Fermented fruits and preserves should be eaten within two months of making. While canning kills the enzymes in the food, making it “enzymatically dead”, lacto-fermentation adds enzymes to food, making it more alive.

1. Time: Usually 2 - 3 days or more 2. Room thermometer: Temperature is best between 68 - 72 degrees F 3. Sea salt: High quality and finely ground 4. Whey: From whole milk, plain yogurt, or raw milk 5. A wide-mouth mason jar, quart size, with a two-piece lid (or a 2 two quart jar for beverages) 6. Vegetable or fruit you would like to ferment 7. 1 cup liquid measure 8. Measuring spoons 9. A cutting board and chef’s knife Here’s how to lacto-ferment stone fruits and apples (additional recipes in cookbook for vegetables, berries, beverages and whole grains; also many helpful and informative tips such as how to peel fruit, why add whey, etc.): 1. Cut up enough fruits and spices to fill a quart jar. If you are using stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, plums) then score, core, and peel them first. 2. Fill the quart jar with the fruit, up to the neck. 3. Mix 4 tablespoons of whey and 2 teaspoons of sea salt with about 1 cup of water. Stir. 4. Push the fruit down with your clean fist or a meat pounder. 5. Add the whey and salt mixture. Be sure the liquid covers the fruit. 6. If liquid does not cover the fruits/ add pure water at room temperature to cover. 7. Be sure to leave about 1 inch of room between the top of what you are fermenting and the lid of the jar.

Golden Milk SERVES 2 This recipe is adapted from The Healthy Bones Nutrition Plan and Cookbook (August 2016) by Dr. Laura Kelly and Helen Bryman Kelly and is printed with permission from Chelsea Green Publishing. Dr. Laura Kelly is a licensed Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner and Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Her private practice focuses on primary care and chronic disease. Helen Bryman Kelly is an award-winning research writer who specializes in medicine and management. She has served as visiting faculty at universities in the United States and the U.K. and is an experienced public speaker. The Healthy Bones Nutrition Plan and Cookbook describes how to prepare and combine whole foods to prevent and treat osteoporosis naturally.

You hear a lot about golden milk lately, and that’s a good thing. It is delicious, comforting, beautiful to behold, and a nutritional inspiration. You can adjust the proportions to make it sweet enough for dessert. In our houses it is very often an evening tonic. Turmeric is a powerful antiinflammatory, which is important for bone health because inflammation can increase bone loss, as explained in chapter 2. However, turmeric is difficult for the body to absorb. Here’s where the black pepper’s piperine rides to the rescue. Piperine is an alkaloid — a compound derived from plants that helps cells absorb nutrients. Piperine helps boost turmeric absorption by 2,000 percent.

Slowly warm the milk, turmeric root and pepper in a small saucepan. Do not allow the milk to boil, because boiling would destroy the enzymes that help the body digest the milk. (Pub note: if you are using raw milk, don’t exceed 110°F.) If you use turmeric powder instead of fresh root, mix the powder in a teaspoon of hot water in a small cup, and then add the mixture to the milk in the saucepan. When steam starts to rise, pour the milk into the small cups and stir in honey to taste. If you wish, top with cayenne or turmeric powder, or — if you have not gotten enough good fats today — a bit of ghee. The sight and scent of a fresh basil leaf on top adds to the pleasure.

2 cups natural milk (Pub note: whole and raw is ideal for this cowgirl!) or homemade non-dairy milk 5 teaspoons skinned and finely chopped fresh turmeric root, or 1 tablespoon turmeric root powder 1 ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 – 3 teaspoons raw honey Pinch of cayenne, ½ teaspoon ghee, 1 basil leaf (optional)

PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Although the focus of THE HEALTHY BONES Nutrition Plan and Cookbook is for osteoporosis prevention, the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric are helpful for general health maintenance and chronic disease prevention. However, if you are looking to improve your bone health, this is a fabulous guide as it contains over 100 recipes for sauces and small plates to soups, salads, main dishes, and more. YUMMY and therapeutic!

Sandra Recommends #DumpTheJunk I’d like to thank Robyn O’Brien (https://robynobrien.com/) for this wonderful hashtag. She is an amazing crusader for “free-from” food – foods free from artificial, processed, modified ingredients that do not nourish us. I would like to expand it in light of recent events because I am mad as hell: #DumpBennet16 (D-CO) #DumpGardner20 (R-CO) Notice I am not being partisan here because we’ve been sold out by both parties in the House, Senate and Presidency. How now, you ask? Why, with S. 764, otherwise known as the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act. I know, it’s barely news that our elected officials act in their self-interest these days, but what has transpired here is truly beyond the pale. If you are not familiar with S. 764, then let me explain. Earlier this month, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell fast-tracked a controversial piece of legislation aimed at overturning and preempting state laws for labeling foods made with genetically modified ingredients. The Senate passed the bill without going through committee or debate, and then the House okayed it without changing a word. Now comes confirmation from the White House that President Obama has signed the legislation into law. The FDA warned the authors of this bill — a pair of senators who have received more than $2.1 million from agribusiness donors for this election cycle alone — that text of the bill seemed to open up several loopholes, allowing for certain ingredients to avoid the GMO label.1 And who voted for this sham legislation? CO Senators Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner did, despite public outcry. In other words, they defied us and did the bidding of their corporate benefactors. And why is this a big deal? Although there are scientific and philosophical

52 Regenerate • September/October 2016 • www.RegenerateMagazine.com

arguments both for and against the value of genetically modified foods, what can’t be argued is that they contain higher levels of the herbicide called glyphosate (aka RoundUp). Here’s why: Plants are genetically modified to withstand exposure to herbicide RoundUp, so farmers can apply RoundUp to kill unwanted weeds and not kill the crop (generally corn, soy, sugar beet, or cotton). So plants which are genetically modified to withstand RoundUp will NOT be killed along with the weeds, and are therefore given heavy, repeated doses to kill the weeds (which adapt and become something called super-weeds, and so more toxic herbicides need to be used, and on and on the toxic death spiral goes…but I digress). So is eating RoundUp on genetically modified foods a big deal? Many people, outside of our bought-and-paid for, corrupt government, seem to think so: • The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer declared glyphosate a probable carcinogen.2 • The International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE) has written to officials of the EU Parliament and Commission asking for an immediate ban on glyphosate herbicides and four insecticides judged by the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency, IARC, to be probable carcinogens.3

PHOTO: CHRISTINA GRESSIANU

• Countries like Sri Lanka have already banned RoundUp, with more to follow as the dominoes begin to fall.4 • Currently, 64 countries around the world require labeling of genetically modified foods.5 • Many localities and countries, like Russia, are moving beyond labeling and banning production of genetically modified foods outright.6,7 That’s a pretty intriguing list, isn’t it? So I’m going with we’ve been sold out. Home of the free? HA! Russia, the country that we supposedly defeated in the Cold War in the name of freedom, has more freedom than we do when it comes to knowing what is in their food, and access to organics. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot indeed. What do to? A few things come to mind: • First, eat organic. Nourish your body with REAL FOOD and don’t support the companies that produce genetically modified/herbicide laden junk and buy off corrupt politicians with the money we give them. Local and organic is even better — in CO you can go to http://www.thepigandtheplow.com/, a local farm and ranch directory, to find real local food in our area. • Second, live the cure. Nourish your body, mind and spirit every moment possible and unleash the power to be well that we all possess. Our bodies do not want to be in a state if dis-ease; in many cases, it’s our daily toxic choices that take it out of a state of ease.8 So is it possible to be blissfully happy and healthy every minute? Methinks not because I get into moods more often than I’d like to admit where I get impatient and curse like a sailor. I also get colds, particularly after flying. But I make daily choices to nourish myself on all levels and know, deep down, that the universe is always supporting me, and that within the tough

times are lessons that need to be learned. • Finally, vote the incumbents out, particularly Bennet this election cycle and Gardner in 2020. There will be many of you who are concerned about how bad the next guy or gal will be, especially if they are not from your party of choice. The fear of the unknown. I am here to tell you that it doesn’t matter because NEITHER party has our interests at heart. It’s already pretty bad. Party of the People? Hardly! Party of individual and state’s rights? RIGHT! The only thing we can do at this moment is boot them out before they have an opportunity to get too comfortable with their corporate benefactors. Because once they do, it’s all about doing their bidding, not doing what is right by us. We need to play the long game and keep voting them out until the jackasses remember for whom they serve. Did I mention that I am mad as hell that our elected officials have decided that we do not have the RIGHT, the FREEDOM to know what is in our food? OUR FOOD! Wouldn’t you like to know if the food you give yourself and your children has been showered, over and over again, with a probable carcinogen? How about we Stand Up for fewer toxins in our lives? There is no more basic right in my mind, and this betrayal of the public trust must be addressed. I don’t care what else Bennet or Gardner have done while in office. I don’t even know who’s running against Bennet this election cycle, but he or she has my vote. And when they betray us, which will eventually happen? It’ll be time to Dump The Junk again. I’ll be the first to campaign for the new candidate using all the media platforms at my disposal. Care to raise some hell and join me? P.S. I would like to thank our US Representative Jared Polis for supporting Food Freedom and our Right to Know. @GoJaredGo!
