AHM Installations

Many people find a warm bath helps to melt away their worries. Baths also help to relieve muscle pain and tension, lower blood sugar and improve heart health.

Walk-in baths are just one of the ways AHM Installations help people every day. They also provide showers and shower trays, wet rooms, raised toilets, sinks and bidet seats.

The family-run team are always happy to help. Call them on 0114 358 2320 or visit www.ahminstallations.co.uk

Help a child with their reading

SUPPORTING WITH ONE-HOUR OF READING A WEEK, YOU CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO A CHILD. VOLUNTEERING IN SHEFFIELD, PARTICULARLY IN S5, S13, S9, AND S36, IS GREATLY NEEDED.

Volunteering as a reading mentor is an immensely rewarding endeavour.

Sheffield City Council’s ESCAL Volunteering programme, part of the Virtual School for Children Looked After, is actively seeking Reading Volunteers to provide one-on-one support in literacy. By joining this initiative, you can have a significant impact on the confidence and selfesteem of children in care.

Currently, we have 76 amazing volunteers who are making a positive difference to the lives of over 260 children and young people across the city. Our children have shared some lovely feedback about their time with Reading Volunteers, with comments such as “you make it seem easier” and “I can understand the story better”, sentiments commonly echoed by the students.

As a Reading Volunteer, you not only contribute to improving children’s reading skills but also gain valuable skills

yourself, such as teaching, communication, and active listening. We still require additional support from volunteers to assist several schools, particularly in specific areas of Sheffield such as S5, S13, S9, and S36. Whether you are interested in becoming a Reading Volunteer or know friends or family who would like to offer their support, we would be thrilled to hear from you! Teaching experience is not a prerequisite as we provide free training, resources and guidance to all volunteers. By dedicating just one hour of your time each week to reading with a child, you can make an enormous difference in the lives of struggling readers in Sheffield. You can visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/readingvolunteers

Bear in mind: If you want to become a Reading Volunteer, you should consider some points:

• You must be over 18 years old to volunteer – however, there is no maximum age!

• You must be able to speak and read English to support a child in school

• You must commit to at least an hour of your time a week to a local school

• We ask that you support a school for a minimum of ten weeks for the commitment to children you are supporting

• All volunteers will require a specific DBS check – this is free of charge and will be carried out during a central, face to face training session

To register your interest or find out more, please contact: 0114 205 2219, ESCALVolunteering@sheffield.gov.uk or visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/ readingvolunteers

RESIDENTS AT FIRTH HOMES ARE ONE BIG FAMILY.

Almshouses (Firth Homes) were founded in 1869 by industrialist and philanthropist Mark Firth. The original buildings were replaced in 1969 with the more modern homes that remain today. Some of the original features have been preserved however, such as the stained glass window which has recently been restored.

Firth Homes is a warm, welcoming and friendly community based in the leafy suburb of Nethergreen. The homes are on a bus route and within walking distance of plenty of shops, cafes, parks and other local amenities. Residents say:

“Firth Homes is a family, where everyone looks out for one another” and “the homes are lovely”.

During the pandemic, and when restrictions would allow, the residents enjoyed meeting in the landscaped gardens for a coffee and a catch up. The residents are glad to be able to meet up now in the community hall for regular coffee mornings, cards, bingo and art club.

Residents have recently held an arts and crafts fair for the local community and showcased some very impressive work. This year the residents have also enjoyed a party for the coronation of King Charles and a trip to Cleethorpes including a paddle in the sea.

• Priority will be given to Sheffield residents (or those returning to Sheffield).

• You must be in housing need.

• You must have sufficient health & mobility to live independently.

Personal care

Firth Homes is not a residential home. Personal care is not provided. The Warden is not trained (or permitted) to provide personal support including cleaning; shopping; cooking or to administer medication. Residents who need help of any kind have to organise this for themselves or rely on relatives, friends or professional carers. An ensuite guest room is available at a small charge to facilitate care for a short time.

Health & Safety

Residents must maintain a landline phone connection. Through this phone line the Trustees connect your home to a monitored ‘social alarm’ company. When the pendant is pressed at any time, day or night, they will assess the emergency and they can contact the emergency services and your relatives or the warden. The homes have fire detectors which are also monitored remotely. The front doors to the flats are fire doors and they are fitted with an overhead door closer which makes the door stiffer to open. Fire Regulations prevent residents from remaining at Firth Homes if they become unable to exit and enter their home safely and without assistance. There are no lifts. The layout of the homes makes them unsuitable for wheelchairs and scooters.

Why are diamonds ‘rare’?

f diamonds are available in every jewellery shop, how can they be rare? We are often asked this question and it is not the most straightforward to answer. In part this is because whether something is rare or not depends on how you define that concept.

There are many gemstones that are far rarer than diamond; an oft-cited example is Tanzanite, regularly marketed as ’1,000 times rarer than diamond’. It is found in only one location on earth whereas diamond is mined in many countries around the world. Diamond is not absolutely rare in the way that Tanzanite is. Its rarity is more complex…

Diamond is formed of carbon, a common element. However, the conditions required for carbon atoms to form as diamond only exist naturally at the incredible pressures and temperatures found deep within the earth’s mantle. At the surface carbon exists as graphite – familiar as the ‘lead’ in pencils.

Research suggests there may be vast quantities of diamond in the mantle and some argue that this makes diamond ‘common’, but I would disagree since these stones aren’t accessible: we can only mine diamonds that have been brought to the earth’s surface by volcanic activity and survived the brutal journey. The areas of the mantle where diamonds are most likely to form are also areas that see little volcanic activity, so many never reach the surface and remain out of reach.

Diamonds are mined are in some of earth’s most challenging terrains, as varied as the perma-frost of northern Canada and the desert beaches of Namibia. Mining in these environments is expensive, requiring intensive investment in infrastructure and equipment. A huge amount of rock must

be excavated, crushed and processed to recover a handful of diamonds.

Around two-thirds of diamonds mined are only of industrial quality, unsuitable for jewellery (diamond has a range of industrial applications due to its extreme hardness). The remainder will still vary greatly in size and quality; large stones with good colour and clarity make up only a tiny fraction. This is where a more nuanced idea of rarity comes in; the balance between small supply and high demand for fine diamonds means that they are rare. Essentially, the larger the stone, the more difficult it becomes to achieve a fine colour and clarity and present a scintillating white sparkle.

For such pure and beautiful diamonds to form, survive the journey from the earth’s mantle, be recovered and fashioned to make it into your piece of jewellery is really one of nature’s most brilliant wonders!

Our showroom is staffed with qualified gemmologists and diamond graders. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about diamonds and talk you through the factors that affect diamond pricing. Just call in to our showroom for a chat.

A tale of two villages

THE RURAL LOCATION IS A HUGE PART OF WORRALL AND OUGHTIBRIDGE’S CHARM, WRITES REBECCA WALES. BUT THERE’S MUCH MORE BESIDES.

Situated northwest of Sheffield, on the edge of the Peak District, are the villages of Worrall and Oughtibridge. Despite being relatively small, the villages have a lot to offer and are ideal locations for anyone looking to buy a home with easy access to both the city and the countryside. Alongside having a stunning rural location next to acres of woodland, both villages also have a fantastic range of amenities.

The village of Worrall is thought to have originally been a Viking settlement, with its name deriving from the Saxon word ‘Hrivfull’ meaning ‘top’. This likely referred to the settlement’s lofty position above the Don and Loxley valleys.

Throughout most of the 18th century,

Worrall was predominantly a farming community. At the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the village began to develop some small-scale industry when a few little mester workshops were set up to make cutlery and knives. During this period, industries such as ganister mining and quarrying also started to grow in the area. Middlewood Quarry was the biggest quarry in the area, with some local historians suggesting that the stone from this quarry was used to build the Wicker Arches in Sheffield.

Worrall has a number of historical buildings, with its oldest being the Memorial Hall. The Hall is noted for having three distinct sections all of different time periods; the west wing

dates from the 16th century, the eastern section dates from 1820, while the central section has a date stone of 1720. The Memorial Hall has undergone renovation work in recent years and is now used as a venue for local social and fundraising activities.

AREA FOCUS
The bridge over the River Don, formerly known as ‘Oughty’s Bridge’
42 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Oughtibridge

The village’s church, the Worrall Independent Chapel, dates from the nineteenth century, as does the nearby Blue Ball Inn. Worrall’s other pub, The Shoulder of Mutton, also has 19th century origins and has been operating since at least 1817.

Outdoor recreational areas within and near Worrall include Sycamore Park, which features a playground, mini football pitch, cycle track and picnic benches, plus Hillsborough Golf Club. Situated just south of the village, Hillsborough Golf Club is renowned for having one of the best golfing venues in Yorkshire, with the course offering fantastic panoramic views of Sheffield and the surrounding countryside.

The villages of Worrall and Oughtibridge are also separated by vast woodland which comprises Hagg Stones Wood and Birks Wood. Beeley Wood, which is situated east of the villages, is one of 35 ancient woodland areas within the Sheffield city boundary. The wood covers an area of approximately 150 acres and is traversed by two public footpaths, one of which offers a pleasant walk alongside the River Don.

The origins of Oughtibridge date back to the 12th century when a ford existed in the area over the River Don.

The ford was managed by a man named Oughtred (nicknamed Oughty) and when a bridge was built on the spot in approximately 1150, it became known as Oughty’s Bridge. The small settlement around the bridge eventually adapted the same name.

Over the centuries, Oughtibridge remained a small isolated rural hamlet made up of only a few families. However, in the latter part of the 18th century, the population started to rise as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Oughtibridge’s position within the Don Valley made it a prime location as the water power of the river could be used to drive the machinery of the early and mid-19th century.

The main road that heads into Oughtibridge from the southeast is Langsett Road South, which is where the majority of the village’s amenities are based. On Langsett Road South, you’ll also find a variety of independent shops and businesses.

Turn left at the end of Langsett Road South onto Church Street and you’ll find The Hare & Hounds pub, plus the 19th century Oughtibridge Parish Church. Turn right at the end of Langsett Road South onto Bridge Hill and you’ll spot a chemists, barbers and post office just round the corner, plus The Cock Inn. Other pubs in Oughtibridge include The White Hart on Langsett Road North and The Pheasant on Station Lane – the latter having recently been refurbished into a modern bar and grill. From Station Lane, there is access to Coronation Park, which features a children’s playground, tennis courts and vast grassed areas for picnics.

Jöro team bringing award-winning flavours to Oughtibridge Mill

Award-winning Sheffield restaurant Jöro is set to bring its nationally acclaimed flavours to Oughtibridge Mill.

Sky-House Co, the company that has brought a new generation of eco-friendly homes to the north Sheffield development in the historic community of Oughtibridge, is also taking on a major renovation and restoration of centuries old properties at the site.

That includes the conversion of a row of artisan cottages into four apartments and one house alongside the distinctive SkyHouse Co properties.

The biggest part of the restoration project, though, is the original mill itself which Sky-House Co’s designers - the acclaimed team at Sheffield’s CODA Studios - have transformed into a destination restaurant and deli shop.

And it has now been confirmed that the site will be operated by Sheffield’s awardwinning Jöro restaurant team.

“This really is a major breakthrough for Sheffield and particularly for the north of the city,” said Sky-House Co co-founder and director David Cross. “The original mill building will be being transformed in a project that combines the old and the new and fits perfectly with the Sky House philosophy of creating not only great houses but also complete communities.

“It is particularly exciting that an awardwinning company like Jöro, which is already putting Sheffield on the culinary map after being such a great success at Krynkl in Shalesmoor, wants to be part of the Oughtibridge Mill story.

“A development the size of Oughtibridge Mill needs the best facilities and that is exactly what we are providing with the mill conversion.

“We are confident that it will breathe new life into the old mill, retaining the heritage of the site but also enhancing it and also creating a new community destination, for food, drink, work and leisure.”

Bygone Hillsborough

he Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group have been awarded a grant of £40,180 to allow them to research, develop and preserve the social history of the area in the 1930s and 1940s.

The two-year project – which took nearly 18 months to develop – was inspired following the chance discovery of four cinefilms from the era that provide a fascinating insight into the area in the period.

The films underpin the new project and provide a rare glimpse into life in the interwar and post-war period.

Knowledge from the films will form the basis for further research into local history and industry as part of the project. Volunteers will also be recruited to record stories from people that can still remember the area in the preWW2/post-WW2 period.

Local schools will be involved in the project which is aiming to bring the

area’s fascinating social heritage to a far wider audience.

Jenny Morton, chair of the group, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded this grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The content of the four cinefilms have opened the door to this fascinating period - this award will truly allow us to bring it back to life and create a legacy for future generations.”

The project will culminate in an exhibition and publishing of two books.

Helen Featherstone, Director, England,

North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund said: “Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, we are thrilled to support the Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group to explore and preserve local history.

Cars for living

A highly connected and innovative SUV for the modern, electrified world, the allnew Renault Austral E-Tech full hybrid forms part of the company’s ‘cars for living’ trajectory, enhancing its already strong focus on electrified cars.

The car features the latest, more powerful, and more efficient version of the E-Tech full hybrid powertrain. It marries its new, efficient drivetrain with an innovative, user-focused cockpit and a range of advanced technologies – from cutting-edge Google connectivity to an array of driver, safety and parking systems as standard – all packaged in a new, sporty SUV design that follows Gilles Vidal’s (Renault Director of Design) new vision.

All models are powered by a new 200hp petrol hybrid powertrain with a 400V 1.7kWh lithium-ion battery.

THE LATEST ADDITION FROM RENAULT IS HIGHLY CONNECTED, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

New look and added technology

The Audi A6 and Audi A7 model lines have been brought into the updated Audi UK portfolio for the 2024 model year. In addition to newly designed trim lines with newlook front and rear designs, the luxury-class models now feature bold interior and exterior colours, new wheel designs, and upgraded standard equipment.

The A6 and A7 model lines now comprise three trim levels - Sport, S line, and Black Edition – and improved standard specification. Matrix LED headlights with dynamic front and rear indicators, electric seats with memory driver function, Audi phone box light, Audi App store and camera-based traffic sign recognition is now standard across every model.

The updated Audi A6 models are available to order now, starting at £43,965 for the Saloon and £46,115 for the Avant. The Audi A7 starts at £56,385 (OTR).

The SUV that shines

Volkswagen is upgrading the third generation of the Touareg with extensive improvements: the suspension as well as the display and operating concept of the fullsize SUV have been revised, and the front and rear design have been sharpened.

Particularly striking features are the newly developed HD LED matrix headlights at the front and the LED taillights, which are realised as a light strip.

The new Touareg will be launched in five powertrain versions. In addition to a turbocharged petrol engine4, there is a choice of two turbodiesel engines and two plug-in hybrids. All highly efficient engines are paired as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and the 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive.

The Touareg R eHybrid is the top-of-the-range model of the product line with the most powerful drive system: a V6 petrol engine plus electric motor with a system output of 340 kW (462 PS).

Limited edition

CUPRA UK has introduced the limited edition CUPRA Formentor VZN, offering bespoke styling options over the VZ3 trim.

Available to order now, priced from £48,270 OTR, it is available exclusively with the 2.0 TSI 310PS DSG-auto 4Drive powertrain.

The Formentor VZN trim features 19-inch sport black alloys in a matte finish, matte black grille, cladding, and mirror covers, Dinamica bucket seats and black chrome CUPRA lettering, visually making it the sportiest and most dynamic Formentor in the range.

In addition, the Formentor VZN comes equipped with the premium Beats Audio sound system, a top view camera and a panoramic sunroof, offering a richer driver and passenger experience with superior comfort.

It will be available in two different colours - Midnight Black and Mountain Green (exclusive to VZN).

Talented Sheffield College lecturer wins a catering industry ‘Oscar’

A talented Sheffield College lecturer has won a prestigious national award in the catering and hospitality sector’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The Craft Guild of Chefs Awards celebrate culinary excellence across the UK and beyond and comprise 18 categories. The awards recognise industry talent from apprentice and trainee chefs to seasoned experts established in their careers working in hospitality, pubs and restaurants

Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader, Catering and Hospitality, won the chef lecturer award category.

Len said: “It is an absolute honour to have won this award and given the calibre of the leading lights in the industry who were also recognised in other categories.”

He added: “We are very proud of our links with top employers and being able to involve them in our curriculum and train our students for high level competitions.

“Industry experience is vitally important to equipping the next generation with the skills that catering and hospitality employers need.”

Escape to the Sea

Karen Sherwood, better known as the owner and director of Cupola Gallery, is presenting her latest body of work under the title ‘Escape To The Sea’ (15 July-19 August). Karen describes her work as expressive landscape paintings.

“My paintings evolve through the process of painting,” she said. “They all start as completely abstract marks and colours and slowly decide what they want to be. The mood and content of the images seem to reflect how I am feeling about the world resulting in often quite turbulent or moody images, unsurprising in our rather unsettling times.”

All works are painted in oil and are for sale. They vary hugely in size from tiny miniature works, on paper, measuring only 5x7cm up to a large 150 x 80 cm oil on linen.

Ryoko Minamitani is also holding her first solo show with Cupola Gallery after exhibiting with the gallery over a number of years.

“Her Japanese heritage can be seen in her expressive use of gestural mark making with ink and paint,” said Karen. “There is a fluidity and freedom in her bold sweeps of brush or pen and in her use of a variety of materials. Whether large or small scale there is an energy and a stillness, if that’s not an oxymoron, in her paintings.”
