As one of the country’s fastest growing cities, there’s perhaps no Denver enclave that better personifies this incredible momentum than Cherry Creek. The uber luxe tabletop and gift boutique is helmed by Brass Bed alums Olivia Louis, Doug Parsons and Molly Myers and is, quite simply, a haven of good taste and dreamy design.

Named for the rarest and most beautiful of birds, the store carries everything a modern host or hostess could want, from crystal Baccarat picture frames to hand-painted Anna Weatherly dinner plates. In fact, many of White Peacock’s vendors are exclusive to the shop in Denver, making their selections highly curated and truly unique. We love the shop’s vast selection of colorful yarn dyed table linens, all of which are arranged on a brightly beautiful wall. “We really wanted to capture putting art into your home, but not just for the design aspect, to make it functional as well,” coowner Molly Myers says. “Our china pieces like Herend and Anna Weatherly are the only two companies left that hand paint their china. AS THE OWNER AND TOUR DE FORCE BEHIND PERCH, LAURIE O’CONNELL SPLITS HER TIME BETWEEN VAIL AND CHERRY CREEK. Get to know the former New Yorker whose fashion tenure at J.Crew, Calvin Klein and Condé Nast eventually led her to Colorado, where she’s dressing Cherry Creek women in indelible style.

Who is your style icon?

A little bit about your background in fashion: I started working for J.Crew in their catalog division right out of college. It was the perfect NYC job – I got to play with clothes all day!

After J.Crew, I worked for a fashion photographer, worked at Calvin Klein (in the Carolyn Bessette days) and for Condé Nast magazines as a Photo Editor. I had a wonderful career in New York and brought all of my knowledge here to Colorado, and Perch had been percolating all of that time.

Why did you start Perch and what made you open a location in Cherry Creek?

When I first moved to Colorado, I had a variety of sales jobs. None of them were satisfying my creative side.

I started asking people where they shopped and no one had a good answer. Vail needed a contemporary boutique and I needed Perch - it was a great fit! Cherry Creek happened because one of my customers wanted it to happen so badly that she found me the real estate - I couldn’t really say no!

How would you describe your personal style?

My J.Crew roots will always stay with me. I am a “modern” prep at heart - I love stripes, blazers and anything navy!

My Grandfather actually... he wore Lilly Pulitzer blazers and Gucci loafers, he loved bright colors! He looked amazing in a tuxedo and charmed the heck out of everyone. Growing up, I just loved to see what he was going to wear next.

gr LE BILBOQUET IN 2013, THE NEW YORK POST ANOINTED LE BILBOQUET “THE SNOBBIEST RESTAURANT IN THE CITY.” Think about that.

It’s most certainly a heavyweight title belt of a reputation.

The only issue with it all, according to co-owner Rick Wahlstedt, is that the moniker was more of superlative than of substance.

“The story from The New York Post was a bit of a mislabel because a lot of patrons have come to know Philippe (co-owner Phillipe Delgrange) very well over the years, dating back to the original location that could only seat 38 guests,” Wahlstedt begins. “The venue became very popular and extremely difficult to get a table due to the size. As a result, a lot of people had to be turned away and then it became known as the hardest table to get in town. Unfortunately, that reputation followed when it grew into a larger restaurant, but that’s not what Le Bilboquet is about.

We’re not snobby and we always go the extra mile to make our guests feel at home.”

New York City is a far cry from Denver, Wahlstedt and Delgrange’s latest touchdown for their newest French invasion amidst the curated streets and boomtown neighborhood of Cherry Creek North at the corner of St. Paul Street and 3rd Avenue.

A sprawling 6,000 square-foot space radiates a mélange of style, design and flavor, all under the watchful eye of Executive Chef

“We knew that Denver was a great market and felt that the Cherry Creek neighborhood was so special.

We couldn’t have found a more perfect place than this residential area set amongst unique shops that’s walking distance to everything. It creates a community bond,” says Wahlstedt. “We couldn’t be happier to be here.”

The wildly popular and critically lauded French restaurant immediately struck a chord with celebrities and affluent types when it first launched in New York’s Upper East Side in 1986. After the original Le Bilboquet closed and relocated three blocks south of the original nook in 2013, the restaurant quickly regained its legions of loyal followers and supplied the demand for a second location to open in Dallas shortly thereafter. A third location followed in the fall of 2014 in Atlanta and a fourth locale in Sag Harbor, New York in 2017. The Cherry Creek restaurant is Le Bilboquet’s fifth and certainly not its last.

Cyrille Holota and Chef de Cuisine Ben Ashworth, formerly of Bistro Vendôme. Offering classic favorites like PEI mussels, Wagyu beef tartare, veal scallopini, their legendary Cajun chicken, crème brûlée, and chocolate mousse, there will also be rotating local beers on tap, signature cocktails and an extensive wine list featuring French and American selections.

Delgrange explains, “We selected Denver due to its popularity that has rapidly increased its population. We’ve had countless recommendations from our current customers to go to Colorado and came across an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. We’re excited to be part of an excellent portfolio of fine dining and award-winning eateries.”

Aesthetically, Le Bilboquet Denver is as artistic a restaurant as you will ever encounter, courtesy of Carolina von Humboldt of CvH Interiors in New York. It’s a stunning, luxurious assembly of natural light, outfitted with custom blue velvet banquettes, a twocolor terrazzo floor and a revolving collection of paintings and photography by locally and nationally acclaimed artists. These artworks will adorn the main dining room, above the fireplace mantle of the lounge and pewter bar area as the restaurant is filled with fresh cut flowers and plants while the charming exterior patio transports guests to a Parisian sidewalk café with French bistro woven rattan chairs and tables.

Is there one drink in particular that you love to make?

My calculated approach to creating a Daiquiri tends to differ from other bartenders.

I prefer to use raw sugar as opposed to refined sugar.

Is there a cocktail with an interesting background or story to it that you like?

It’s a tie between the Aviation and the Airmail. Both cocktails reflect people’s fascination with flight, which was a new idea during the early 1900s.

Funniest comment that you’ve overheard from guests at the bar?

“So, your brother’s an engineer?” Or anything indicating a first date.

Oddest drink order you’ve ever received?

A chocolate martini with two olives, which is considered bad luck.

Talk about the art that goes into a beautiful and delicious cocktail.

A cocktail should be something personal, a garnish should be functional, and the cocktail should be balanced. But at the end of the day, it needs to speak to the guest on a personal level.

Where do you get your inspiration?

From everywhere! Classics are the foundation to everything, but inspiration comes from all around us, both culturally and generationally.

How is B&GC different from the rest?

A true commitment to the guest. We always say, “We don’t make cocktails, we create lasting memories.” We care deeply about the guest’s overall experience, with the anticipation of their return.

elissa Christie de Koning is not like other real estate brokers. Perhaps that’s because she’s not quite a real estate broker – at least not in the traditional sense. She’s also not like other decorators, for much the same reason. As a real estate pro who is a seasoned interior designer, Melissa (known as Missy to most) looks at homes from an entirely different viewpoint. It’s this unique perspective that prompted her to marry her two careers into one full-service business with the introduction of MC Home Source.

“For every client I work with – be it a real estate client, design client, or both, I need to know their story,” she attests. “What are their interests and passions? How do they live from day to day? Is there a room they remember loving when they were growing up? Our spaces are deeply personal and a good broker or designer really gets to know their client before selecting or creating

a place for them to call home.” Indeed, it’s this level of personal attention that has turned the majority of Missy’s former clients into lifelong friends.

As a broker with a design background (and vice versa) working with Missy means that the entire process – from listing, to staging, buying and ultimately creating your new space – is seamless. This deep knowledge of not only real estate but also architecture and design allows Missy to help her clients make smart, sound decisions. “We all know that hiring a designer can help you avoid costly mishaps,” she explains. “But hiring a broker who is also a designer can help you avoid monumental mistakes.

So often, buyers purchase a home assuming they can move a wall, build an addition or rehab a kitchen only to find out that these changes are either exponentially more expensive than they were told or are altogether impossible. Sadly, it’s oftentimes too late.”

Conversely, her design background also comes into play for Missy’s sellers who benefit from her staging services and experience. In fact, she personally stages every home she lists, always utilizing as much of the homeowner’s own furnishings as possible. “When a home hits the market, it should be edited in a way that buyers can see themselves living in it,” she explains. “Yet it also needs to have character.

My goal is to create rooms that buyers want to linger in. The emotional reaction that staging can evoke always helps to sell a home for maximum value.”

Yet for Missy, it’s about so much more than avoiding mistakes or saving time. The veteran broker and mother of three prides herself on the notion that finding and designing a home for a client is a sincere privilege. “This is your nest. It’s where you are going to live, raise your family and create memories. There’s no greater or more meaningful responsibility than that,” she says. “I always tell my clients that above all, my job is is to ensure their home has a soul.”

To that end, she believes that a good decorator captures the essence of the person living in the home – a lesson she learned from mentor and design legend Carleton Varney while living on Mackinac Island (Varney designed the tony vacation enclave’s famed Grand Hotel). “I always tell my clients to surround themselves with the things they love. For me, that’s the only hard and fast rule of design,” she smiles. “I also believe that editing and accessorizing a home is a true art form. Whether I am staging for a seller or designing someone’s forever space, the impact that the right accessories can have on a room is significant.”

And while Missy’s personal tastes lean towards all things classic – she loves antiques, Asian influences and blue and white hues – her design prowess reaches far beyond her own preferences. “Good design is good design and that spans many genres. We can get rather stale if we stay within one specific style – branching out into other styles like mid century modern and mountain contemporary has made me a much better designer,” she affirms.

One thing remains certain regardless of style or scope.

Missy gives her clients her all. “I don’t take on too many jobs at once. It’s incredibly important to me that I spend as much time as possible finding my clients a home they genuinely love and designing that home to perfectly fit their life and style.”

T

he glossy black Escalade hummed across the snaking desert highway towards the Sea of Cortez until the endless green blur of surrounding shrub and cacti gave way to the booming majestic blue of the coast.

Inside the Cadillac, tinted windows shielded the leather interior from the 94-degree mid-day sun, while moist lemon-scented towelettes and chilled water made a day of travel from Denver to Los Cabos, passing through customs, and our embarrassingly broken Spanish a distant memory.

As we headed south towards Cabo San Lucas, a renewed energy was brewing in restless anticipation of experiencing the newest Montage seaside paradise south of the border. Having already been pampered Montage-style over the years by its Laguna

Beach, Beverly Hills and Deer Valley resorts, Montage Los Cabos had been a long-awaited daydream after the rumors swirled that the company was launching a new masterpiece in Cabo.

The coastal drive down Federal Highway 1 is always an entertaining tour of which hotels are moving in, who bought what, and there’s George Clooney’s old neighborhood or Sammy Hagar’s home.

This time around, fittingly appropriate coming from Denver, there was talk of Peyton Manning’s favorite spot to escape.

As we enter the gates, we immediately notice the cactus-lined drive that serves as a prelude to a desert-themed landscape. With the resort now in view, earth tones, wood and stone greet us in a stunningly modern lobby appropriately dressed with floor-toceiling glass.

FLIGHT TIME 3 hours, 5 minutes

One of our favorite parts of a trip like this is heading out to critique the pool situation, locate the bar and breathe in the view that makes a destination so magical. In the case of Montage Los Cabos, it’s a long gaze out across Santa Maria Bay which, for all intents and purposes, is front and center serving as the resort’s personal beachfront.

Dining at Marea for a late lunch paired with the view of the water was absolutely sublime. The pastor tacos with guajillo pepper marinated pork loin, pineapple Spanish onions and cilantro is a meal that we still remember. Chef Victor Valencia’s Marea menu covered plenty of dishes, making for difficult decisions. It’s Cabo, so the fish is plentiful and beyond fresh. The Baja Bouillabaisse, which goes great with beer like Pacifico, features fish, shrimp, shellfish, fennel, potato confit, spicy tomato saffron broth and grilled ciabatta bread. Guerrero Negro oysters, charred avocado and lobster, yellow fin tuna, and sea bass ceviche are other can’tmiss dishes. Brick oven pizzas are also at your beck and call, while Marea also has menu items by nutritionist and celebrity coach Kelly Le Veque, offering seasonal options for guests to stay onplan while traveling like butter lettuce-wrapped shrimp tacos and Greek Chicken Salad.

For dinner, Marea brings out the heavyweights for an evening to remember, including Wagyu rib eye, strip loin and skirt steak; lobster risotto, cavatelli and a 15-ounce lobster tail. Our double smoked pork chop paired with a few glasses of pinot noir and capped off with the tres leche cake was well worth every calorie.

A welcoming Antonio is there upon our arrival with an engaging “Welcome Home,” while bearing the ultimate gift – a heavenly blend of hibiscus water and mezcal with lime juice, basil and rimmed with a to-die-for Tajin powder.

On the walk to our room, we’re reminded immediately of Montage’s commitment to unmatched customer service and hospitality. Every staff member within eye sight stops, smiles and delivers the most sincere and warmest of receptions that the “Welcome Home” mentality really starts to sink in.

The room transcends its Mexican roots with a very contemporary style coupled with custom-made tile throughout the entire floorplan, including the en suite bathroom and outdoor shower.

Dinner can also be savored at the property’s other eatery, Mezcal, which is the resort’s signature restaurant and modern Mexican kitchen by Chef Alexis Palacios. The Chef’s Tasting allowed us to get busy with a little bit of everything – crispy striped bass, octopus tempura tacos, suckling pig al pibil and a wagyu strip loin. Mezcal is also your place for breakfast, featuring the likes of pancakes with banana, cajeta, strawberry syrup, pecans and whipped cream; avocado toast, an array of egg and omelet dishes, pastries, cinnamon dusted French Toast and the meal we had on both mornings – Motulenos, which consisted of an incredible combination of eggs over easy, black beans, smoked ham, Chihuahua cheese, peas, fried plantains and Epazote salsa motulena all on a crispy tortilla. This meal alone is deserving of a flight to Cabo.

As delicious as the fare may be, the unrivaled star of Montage Los Cabos is Spa Montage.

The resort in itself is an experience like no other, and then there’s the private pool at the spa that changes everything. It’s an inner sanctuary that oozes relaxation with its cabanas, chaise lounges and parasols, and poolside service for a bite to eat or a mango margarita during a sun soaked interlude. The peace and quiet will have you feeling royal.

Of course you’re at Spa Montage for an unforgettable massage or another out-of-this-world treatment. We were beyond impressed with the men’s and women’s lounges and spa areas prior to our 90-minute appointments. Extensive in size and leaving you wanting for nothing, the whirlpool, sauna, steam room, sitting areas and lockers were thoughtfully spread out to take advantage of the vast space, while attendants are there for any and all assistance.

It’s another flawless creation where anything is possible, and probable, when Montage has a say in it.

he Cherry Creek landscape has grown by leaps and bounds over the past two decades, one of the most notable changes being the addition of not one, but four high end hotels to its storied streets.

And while as locals, we may not be looking for a place to rest our heads, there are plenty of posh offerings that span well beyond accommodations.

Here, we explore the ins and outs of the neighborhood inns.

The OG of the CC, JW Marriott made its 199-room, $40-million-dollar way onto the scene in 2004. Since then, the property has cemented itself as the area’s original and most traditional hotel, with its central location on Clayton Lane. The hotel remains a favorite amongst locals for its expansive event spaces – both a grand ballroom and a unique 2,400 square foot outdoor option replete with glass retractable doors leading to a patio with multiple fire features are available.

The original eatery, Second Home, was a Cherry Creek North staple until 2018, when Sage Hospitality closed the doors, allowing the JW to take over.

Soon after, Social Fare opened in its place, albeit briefly. New for Spring 2020, the property has announced that “guests can relax in the JW Marriott Denver’s reimagined lobby and dine at Toro Latin Kitchen + Bar by acclaimed Chef Richard Sandoval.”

02. HALCYON For more than a decade. JW held its ground as the only major hotel in the neighborhood. Then, in 2016, Halcyon entered the scene in all of its stylish glory. The work of hospitality giants Sage and Matt Joblon’s BMC Investments (the area’s most robust and revered developer), the 154-room property marked the beginning of Cherry Creek’s proverbial hotel boom at a time when the neighborhood was rapidly changing.

Officially dubbed Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek, the property is intended to feel less like a hotel and more like a home. Case in point? In place of a typical check in desk, guests enter to find the Kitchen Counter, a modish looking marble island with artisanal snacks, coffee, wine and local craft beers.

Just a few steps away, the “living room” boasts cozy sectional sofas, a fireplace and a wide selection of artsy coffee table books one would expect to see in the home library of their poshest pal. Across the corridor is Halycon’s Gear Garage – an amenity of which the hotel is particularly proud. Inside,

there’s a bevy of playthings that speak to the active Denver lifestyle – motor scooters, skateboards, fishing rods, Frisbees, cameras, GoPros, and bikes of the road, mountain and cruiser sort. There’s even a collection of curated Osprey backpacks that will have you ready for a picnic at the nearby Botanic Gardens or a hike up a Colorado 14er.

Once you’ve made it to your guest quarters, you’ll notice that the devil is most certainly in the details. Rooms have undoubted character, from quirky doormats, to a turntable and collection of vinyl records, to a ritzy bar set up replete with the hotel’s private label hooch (which is made by local distiller Laws Whiskey House). Touches of Colorado charm abound with brass, leather and black iron finishes while niceties like a Smart TV and Jonathan Adler bath products up the property’s chic-factor. We love the Loft Suite, which mimics Cherry Creek loft living with its two floors, oversized soaking tub and tony furnishings.

Upstairs lives Halcyon’s biggest bragging right. A swanky rooftop pool plays host to arguably the neighborhood’s best view – a 360-degree vantage point of the Rockies, downtown Denver and Cherry Creek. Around the pool deck, the views are almost equally impressive, with pop art murals that wow (and make the perfect backdrop for photos). Guests can rent a cabana, which includes sips, snacks, robes and iced towels, or upgrade for occasions such as bachelorette parties to find a bevy of cheeky pool floats, party necklaces, sunglasses and balloons at their disposal. Bottle service is also available, with double magnums of bubbly becoming de rigueur.

If you’re not a guest of the hotel, you can still experience all that is Elevated – Halcyon’s sexy rooftop bar. Open seasonally, Elevated serves up trendy craft cocktails and bites and is open to the public.

As one might expect, it has become Cherry Creek’s spot du jour to see and be seen during the summer months.

At the opposite end (quite literally) of the spectrum, there’s B&GC, Halcyon’s broody speakeasy nestled on the subterranean floor of the hotel. Guests enter through an alley door marked only by an ornate brass bell, and are led through Halcyon’s winding bowels before making their way into the clandestine watering hole. Revived from the ruins of the former Cherry Creek Post Office, B&GC celebrates the cocktail culture of post WW II America with vintage inspired décor and cocktails served the way they should be – thoughtful, tasty and just a bit stiff.

When the property first opened, it featured Departure – a trendy Asian fusion restaurant and bar by Top Chef alum Gordon Gourdet.

This spring, Sage sold the hotel to Columbus, Ohio-based Rockbridge Capital for a record-breaking $93 million (the priciest hotel sale in Denver history) and, sadly, the Departure space was not part of the deal, causing the popular eatery to shutter. A new restaurant concept is promised for 2020.

Next door, the Halcyon-affiliated Quality Italian serves up modern Italian favorites with tableside flair, ensuring an always-packed house. Try the Chicken Parm for two or the Dry Aged Porterhouse Agnolotti.

For folks wanting to stay fit while on the road, Halcyon’s Wellness Passport is a unique and welcomed alternative to the hotel gym (which the property also boasts). In partnership with Cherry Creek’s barre3, Corepower Yoga, Rise Nation, SoulCycle and Tru Fit Athletic Club, the program grants guests one complimentary fitness class per day of their stay, giving them the opportunity to mix up their workouts.

INSIDER INSIGHT Halcyon loves its locals, and offers a number of ways to experience the property without a room key required. Seasonally, the hotel hosts a Monday night “happy hour” barre and yoga class on its rooftop deck as well as Martinis and Movies, where guests can sip on a beverage, take in the sunset and catch a flick. In the Fall and Winter months, locals can learn how to craft cocktails like a pro with B&GC’s Cocktail Club. One of the joint’s expert mixologists will guide a private class where you’ll shake, stir and sip your way to libation nirvana.

Soon after Halcyon came Moxy, the boutique Marriott brand hotel designed with the urban hipster in mind. Another BMC project, the 170-room property opened in late 2017, making Cherry Creek North’s 16 block radius home to three major hotels. Priced under $200 a night, Moxy caters to the fun-loving, youthful traveler.

The hotel is nothing if not whimsical. Guests check in at a bar, and there’s nary a front desk to be seen. In fact, the entire property is focused on minimal design and communal spaces that encourage interaction. The lobby area features The Moxy Bar, The Moxy Pick Up Station (a self-service cafe), shuffleboard table, foosball table, a social media display screen serving as The Moxy Guestbook, and a vending machine with quirky finds like sunglasses, Instant Cameras, fidget spinners, shot glasses, Fitbits, trees in a can, and playing cards. A unique art collection is displayed on each of the 12 floors, with a communal ironing room on the second floor.

Naturally, guests are offered a cocktail (on the house) upon check in. In fact, Moxy’s bar is open until 2 in the morning – a rarity in the neighborhood. The hotel’s elevator cabs feature immersive photographic installations inspired by whiskey from Denver artist Paul Bokering. Guests enter a surreal whiskey vault in one cab while the other is intended to make one feel as if they are inside a whiskey glass itself, complete with larger-than-life ice cubes. The art continues from there, with themes for each guest floor – Happy Camper, Eye See You, Go Figure, Gold Rush, Ski Lodge, and Animal Kingdom among them. Curated

by Denver-based NINE dot ARTS (who also worked on Halcyon and The Jacquard), Moxy’s collection features over 80 original works by international and regional artists in addition to more than 650 prints and playful objects.

The hotel’s signature piece, an oversized mixed media painting by Los Angeles street artist Hijack, makes a bold and clever statement.

INSIDER INSIGHT Located adjacent to The Moxy Hotel, Cherry Creek Beer Garden is a pet friendly place to drink beer, grab a bite and hang out in the rustically chic outdoor scene featuring multiple seating areas and firepits. The property calls it a destination for “smart people who prefer their craft beer in a can, so each one is cold, crisp and fresh.” Regardless, we love the joint’s summer programming, which typically features Yappy Hour (dog-friendly beer options, treats, and toys, while the humans indulge in deals on select sausage bites and $5 grab cans), Mmm.. Sundays (cocktails, food, garden games, live DJs and all you wish to drink Bloody Mary and Bellini packages) and Brewery Nights (local Colorado breweries offer specials and freebies).

04. THE JACQUARD

The latest and perhaps most celebrated addition to Cherry Creek North’s hotel boom came last year, with the highly anticipated opening of The Jacquard. At eight stories and 201 rooms, it’s the enclave’s largest and arguably most luxurious of the pack, having received accolades from the likes of Robb Report, Condé Nast Traveler and Wine Spectator in its first year. Developed by Stonebridge Co., The Jacquard joined the legendary Brown Palace as one of Denver’s two Marriott Autograph Collection properties.

Named for the French inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard who automated the pattern looming process and made au currant style available to the masses, the property aims to act as “a stylish host of tailored and irresistible experiences.”

The ode to fashion and fabrics is present throughout the space, with interior design paying tribute to various textures, patterns and silhouettes that one might expect to see on the runways. The hotel’s architecture is decidedly modern and artistic, with floor to ceiling glass spanning two stories that connect the lobby and common space to the second floor’s event and meeting spaces – all of which face the bustling Milwaukee Street action.

Rooms themselves are contemporary and light-filled, each with a split of bubbly to welcome guests upon arrival. As one might expect, details like Italian bath linens by Frette, Vero Water® hydration stations and in-room reusable glass bottles, and Gilchrist & Soames bath amenities abound. Suites are roomy and well appointed, with a Peloton bike available upon request. When it’s time to venture out, the hotel’s Tesla Model X is available 24-hours a day for on-demand transportation within a two-mile radius.

The hotel’s art, all of which was curated by NINE dot ARTS (Halcyon, Moxy) is intended to reflect the collection of a world traveler. One of the marquee pieces which is visible from the street, is a 16-foot suspended neon sculpture with an LED component by Denver-based artist Scott Young.The color-changing sculpture titled I Have Seen Things You Would Never Believe extends from the ceiling of the hotel’s second floor. Our favorite, however, is BB by Patrick Kane McGregor. The larger than life, hand-painted homage to French actress and fashion icon Brigitte Bardot greets hotel guests upon entering the porte cochere. In the same space is Dabble, an outdoor area with multiple fire pits that speaks the neighborhood’s thriving patio culture.

Narrative, the hotel’s tony restaurant, has quickly skyrocketed to the top of nearly every list of local favorites. Helmed by Executive Chef Paul Nagan, the menu showcases modern American dishes, shareable plates, and perhaps the

neighborhood’s most impressive happy hour, which includes half price glasses of Veuve Clicquot. Narrative also boasts a wine library with over 100 sections.

The property’s most talked about hotspot, however, remains its impressive rooftop. With its 75-foot sparkling lap pool and sweeping views of the city and Rocky Mountains, The Jacquard’s elevated outdoor area is the ideal place to relax and unwind. Kisbee on the Roof, the space’s watering hole, is open seasonally and offers community tables and cozy lounge areas where guests and locals can imbibe and indulge in high style. There’s even a translucent pool cover for special rooftop events, allowing the pool to become a floating catwalk, dance floor, aisle or anything else one could imagine.

INSIDER INSIGHT With the recent opening of Denver Art Museum’s Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature exhibit, the entire town is seeing things through Rosé colored glasses. Naturally, Narrative is celebrating with a Monetinspired cocktail. Rosé Walk pays tribute to the impressionist’s later days spent in the village of Givernay in Normandy and is made with Père Magloire Cálvados—the region’s most famous spirit. For the Monet devotee wanting to up the ante, the hotel is also offering a posh – and over the top – package. Meet Me at Monet starts at $4,500 and includes two nights at the hotel, tickets to the museum’s exhibit, a Monet inspired floral arrangement from nearby Bloom, two direct flight tickets to Paris and two tickets to see Monet’s garden and home in Giverny.

rom the beginning, Cherry Creek has been a neighborhood that as a whole, has been ever-changing.

Progress has always found a way and, ultimately, has shaped the narrative of this storied enclave. From a pastoral 19th century outpost known as Harman, to a literal dumping ground that was transformed by

Denver visionary Temple Buell, to the upscale enclave that we know and love today, Cherry Creek’s history is as colorful as the Hermès scarves adorning the larger-than-life windows on Fillmore Plaza.

A PLACE CALLED HARMAN In the beginning, the area we now know as Cherry Creek was a sleepy, wooded plot of land valued most for its lucrative lumber opportunities. In 1872, a confederate war couple relocated from Mississippi, officially establishing the town of Harman. Edwin and Lou G. Harman are credited as founding the area via the Homestead Act. But there’s a twist – historians have no record of an Edwin, but rather an L.G. Harman. It is widely believed that Lou was windowed during the Civil War before heading west to Colorado. In the simplest of language, the town’s founder was, in fact, a woman. An unheard of feat at the time and quite possibly a precursor to the type of forward thinking progress for which Cherry Creek is now known. Yet just as Harman was finding its legs, the Panic of 1893 hit, along with the silver crash, bankrupting the town.

A DUMPING GROUND In 1925, Temple Buell purchased the gravel pit covered land at First and University. At the time, the area was populated by servants who worked at the nearby Denver Country Club as well as tent revivals and, as historians have called them, “squatting gypsies.” Buell’s initial intent was to develop the land into upscale housing for DCC members. But when the flood of 1933 rendered the land useless, he allowed the City of Denver to set up garbage dumps on the site. Fast-forward to post WWII, and the Cherry Creek Dam was built, thus weakening the threat of another flood and making the parcel attractive once again.

THE TOWN’S FOUNDER WAS, IN FACT, A WOMAN. AN UNHEARD OF FEAT AT THE TIME AND QUITE POSSIBLY A PRECURSOR TO THE TYPE OF FORWARD THINKING PROGRESS FOR WHICH CHERRY CREEK IS NOW KNOWN.

A NEW VISION In 1946, Buell announced plans to build a shopping mall on the land he had once relinquished to the city dump. An ambitious attempt at the time, it would be the second shopping center in the city (some sources say it was only the third mall in the entire country). First, however, he’d have to battle it out over zoning issues for several years – a challenge that faces area developers even today. Ultimately, he broke ground on nine acres that would house Denver Dry Goods (the space that until recently, served as the longtime home of The Container Store) and 17 other shops. Initially, Buell intended to develop the eastern part of the property into upscale apartments. Several years later, that plan was squelched and Buell’s shopping center expanded eastward in a rather haphazard manner. Development continued around the mall and into the area across First Avenue (modern day Cherry Creek North) yet there was no consistent architectural theme or style. Then, in 1968, Buell proposed a plan to build a 54-story skyscraper. This left neighbors outraged and ultimately resulted in the ordinances in place today that put restrictions on the height of any Cherry Creek building. Still, construction, albeit limited in stature, continued and the neighborhood grew. Mom and Pop businesses staked their claim on Cherry Creek North, some of which remain today.

THE TAUBMAN FACTOR In the early 1980s, shopping mall kings known as Taubman Corporation announced their plans to acquire and expand Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Taubman’s original concept was remarkably bold and included a 950,000-square-foot addition to the retail space plus 250,000 square feet of new offices, 250,000 square feet of new housing and a hotel. The proverbial cherry on

top? A futuristic skywalk and black onyx finish. Once again, the neighborhood was in an uproar. While some residents found the prospect of major national retailers in Cherry Creek to be an exciting one, many loudly expressed concern over traffic, congestion, air pollution and skyrocketing housing costs. Despite their cries, progress won out and the “new mall,” sans space age towers, opened in 1990 to much fanfare.

When Taubman’s Cherry Creek originally opened, it was anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor, and called other major luxury labels such as Louis Vuitton tenants.

The next year, Neiman Marcus opened, giving the city that was once regarded as a cow town major fashion street cred.

Over the next two decades the mall and its neighbors across First Avenue continued to grow. There were ups and downs – Nordstrom moved in in 2007, yet Saks closed in 2011 – but despite a recession and increased competition from the plethora of shopping centers that popped up in and around the metro area – Cherry Creek thrived. @CHER R YCR EEKMAG

TODAY’S CHERRY CREEK Collectively, Cherry Creek Shopping Center and Cherry Creek North have seen monumental growth over the past decade. The wrecking ball took to the former Saks Fifth Avenue locale to make way for the Center’s unmistakable monolith that is the RH Gallery – one of the brand’s largest and most celebrated in its entire portfolio. Next door, the mall’s west wing was added, bringing names like Tory Burch along with it and making way for a new, larger Tiffany & Co. Across the street, Cherry Creek North burgeoned at the hands of forward-thinking developers. Soon, construction cranes became a familiar sight as the “New North” revealed itself, marking the first major overhaul for the district in 20 years. The first wave saw the addition of developments like Clayton Lane and Fillmore Plaza as well as niceties like a bike sharing program and improved parking meters. But that was only the beginning.

Soon, major development began all over the district. In the past several years, three new hotels have been added as well as buildings such as a newly redeveloped Cherry Creek Square, Civica Cherry Creek, ANB Bank’s redevelopment, 250 Columbine, The St. Paul Collection and The Laurel. Along with the area’s massive growth has come the entrée of major national retails brands like Hermes, Peter Millar, Kendra Scott, CB2, an Amazon Books and more. Yet the district maintains that the core of Cherry Creek is still rooted in small business. In fact, of its 250 retailers, 70 percent are independently owned and operated.

Most recently, BMC Investments, the firm responsible for the vast majority of the district’s growth, announced plans to reimagine the Cherry Creek Inn space at 233 Clayton Street. Plans call for a 37-room boutique hotel with ground floor retail, the ultimate goal being a social spot where entertainment and nightlife span beyond the 6 o’clock hour. The developers have said that their ultimate vision is to take Cherry Creek from a 12-hour destination to an 18-hour hub. Like Buell and Taubman before them, they’re sure to have their fair share of naysayers. Yet like most things in life, growth can and will always find a way.

A Conversation with Nick LeMasters Nick LeMasters is a household name in Cherry Creek. For 23-years the retail veteran served as General Manager of Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Just this month, he journeyed across First Avenue to become the CEO of the Cherry Creek North BID. We sat down to get Nick’s perspective on all things Cherry Creek.

CCM: You were at the forefront of Cherry Creek Shopping Center from the mid 1990s until now. How has the Center changed during that time?

NLM: The biggest change has been in the way retail is merchandised as a whole. In the 90s, everything was dominated by women’s apparel and jewelry. Today, it’s a far more diverse assortment. Who would have thought we would be purchasing computers and cars at the mall?

There has also been a huge shift in lifestyle and what we wear from day to day. Women’s suiting once reigned supreme, but today, it’s all about athleisure.

CCM: Which store opening (aside from the originals) has been the single most impactful for the Center?

NLM: Without a doubt, Nordstrom. It was the missing piece of the puzzle and since opening, has made the Center more relevant and competitive.

CCM: How do you see Cherry Creek 10 years from now?

NLM: My sense is that you are going to continue to see a neighborhood that evolves and becomes more densified. In particular the parcel at the west end of Cherry Creek Shopping Center (the former Bed, Bath, and Beyond space) will play a major role. We would like to see something very different there than what exists today. A mixed use space with a broader array of offerings or a major entertainment venue.

Ultimately, Cherry Creek is becoming a city within a city. The area will continue to have its own personality as the consummate live, work, play district in the metro area. We expect to see an influx of empty nesters who are saying goodbye to the suburbs and are looking for a major lifestyle change.

CCM: Is construction coming to an end or do you envision a new wave unfolding?

NLM: I think the development community is collectively catching its breath after the last 3-5 years of building at an extraordinary pace. I do expect that we are going to see incremental changes though. As I begin to lead the Cherry Creek BID, our team intends to do so in a way that is less disruptive. More sequential, incremental growth that is manageable and sustainable.

CCM: What is the biggest element that the neighborhood is missing?

NLM: A cultural experience. We want to create something more permanent than the Arts Festival that will keep the neighborhood alive with culture. I would love to see a performing arts building that can host major shows and concerts.

A facility like that would extend the life of Cherry Creek beyond the 9-5 hours.

CCM: How do you respond to people who think that the area is losing its charm?

NLM: There’s no question that some stores have moved or disappeared, but when you stand back and look at what is available from a small business perspective, Cherry Creek is still very much a hub for emerging businesses and will continue to be for the long term. We believe strongly that the Cherry Creek North neighborhood complements the Shopping Center and vice versa. We really are stronger together. Cherry Creek’s best days are ahead of it on both sides of the street. We might have to endure some disruptions here and there, but the result is a world-class destination.

Each week a different label is featured (think Moet and Chandon, Veuve Clicquot) with rare special pricing. Oh, and there are fireworks. Yep – don’t be surprised if you see celebratory sparklers as the bottles pop open. A festive scene, indeed.

Now that you’re in the mood to celebrate, what better way to do so than with a shopping trip? Head next door to A Line Boutique where a personal stylist will help you with all of the Chloe, Helmut Lang, Rag & Bone and Rebecca Taylor your hearts desire. Then, saunter down to Perch for more retail bliss. We love the Vail-based boutique’s Denver outpost for its perfectly curated selections that are equal parts feminine and fierce. All of that R&R has caused you and your gals to work up a bit of an appetite. Show off your newfound glow at longtime Cherry Creek favorite Cucina Colore. Share a Gamberi Salad (arugula and grilled shrimp) and Tartufo Pizza (whipped ricotta, roasted mushrooms and truffle oil) and end on a sweet note. The Bread Pudding is legendary.

Now that you have baubles adorning your arms, a bit of relaxation is in order. Head to Vive Float Studio + and get lost in the calming bliss of float therapy. Afterwards, head to neighborhood favorite Cherry Creek Grill for scratch made, wood fired fare in a moody, relaxing space. Our pick? The much-loved Macho Salad.

From there, take a leisurely stroll through the charming streets of Cherry Creek North. Hand in hand, you will duck your heads into boutiques and playfully window shop the morning away. Be sure to check out the stunning sparklers at the likes of Gnat Jewelry and Atelier where Raz Gnat’s original designs will wow even the most discerning diamond lover. Also saunter into Signet for a contemporary piece from designer and owner Carol Ferguson. We adore her cuffs that fuse 24k pure gold to oxidized sterling silver. For the gentleman, head to the east end of the neighborhood and browse the watch selection at Oster Jewelers. Our pick? The ruggedly handsome timepieces from British label Bremont.

Next on the agenda is gallery hopping. Cherry Creek North is home to nearly a dozen fine art studios and galleries, from mixed media, to oil on canvas, to photography and more. Visit Fascination Street for traditional still-lifes and contemporary pop art, Masters Gallery for stunning sculptures, Gallerie Rouge for original antique advertising posters, and Saks for American and European oils, bronzes and watercolors.

EVENING It’s time for a cocktail. Take your better half to Vinue and sample to your heart’s desire with their unique (and fun) self-serve wine stations. Also try the Charcuterie Board, which we deem one of the neighborhood’s best.

After all of that imbibing, you’ll want to get a bit of fresh air, which makes the short walk across 1st Avenue to 801 Chophouse a welcomed one. Take in the charm of Cherry Creek’s busy holiday streets as you stroll through the city en route to Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Once there, the most romantic of meals in the most classic of steakhouses awaits.

A Cherry Creek institution, the shop has been outfitting Denver’s well heeled children, quite literally, for nearly 27 years. After you pick the perfect pair, it couldn’t hurt to journey next door to Enstrom’s.

Famous for their toffee, we think your brood will love a cup of their hot cocoa on a cold winter’s day.

AFTERNOON Make your way to Cherry Creek Shopping Center for a trip to see the one and only Santa. The Center’s annual visit from the big guy is one to behold, with Santa’s Flight Academy setting up their impressive headquarters in Grand Court. After they’ve shared their holiday wishes, head just a few steps away to Lolli & Pops and let them chose a confectionary treat. We love the candy store’s vintage vibe and pastel wonderland. If they’ve been especially good, a short trip to the Center’s popular play area, replete with plenty of prehistoric pals, is always a good idea.

It’s time for lunch, and the Cherry Cricket is a family-friendly institution that boasts the best burgers in town. The watering-holemeets-burger-joint is incredibly accommodating when it comes to their tiniest diners and the casual atmosphere makes lunch with the little ones relatively stress free. Crispy Mac & Cheese Bites and a classic Cricket Burger are both must-haves.

After lunch, spend time strolling through the streets of Cherry Creek North. During the holidays the lights are twinkling and, if you’re lucky, you may run into the district’s carolers, dressed in full costume.

Your wee ones will be home in time for a late afternoon nap before family dinner – naturally, you picked up take out from True Food Kitchen to counteract the day’s delicious but sugar-laden fare.

FLIGHT TO LUXURY A stellar crowd descended on Centennial Airport’s Signature Flight and Modern Aviation Hangars for the 10th Annual (and final) Flight to Luxury event. The sell-out soirée, produced by Denver-based Cuvée, benefited PIVOT, the newly launched foundation that addressed the needs of the “whole child” in Colorado.
