reativity. Innovation. Perseverance. These are just a few of the attributes that make a business stand out from the pack, and they’re ever-apparent in each of the honorees of our second annual Peak of the Creek Awards (page 55). From restaurants to retailers, to art and architecture, we’re celebrating the best and brightest of Cherry Creek. Speaking of art, we hope you’ll enjoy the creativity and talent that went into this issue’s cover. An homage to all that is Cherry Creek, it’s our interpretation of what defines this bustling neighborhood – an eclectic array of culture ranging from luxury labels to mom-and-pop shops. We had so much fun working with longtime friend and local artist Jill Hodges on the custom illustrations that adorn this design. In the spirit of celebrating all that is Cherry Creek, we sat down with BID CEO Nick LeMasters to learn the story behind the district’s remarkable post-COVID comeback. In Survivor (page 50), we reveal how Cherry Creek North became a model for retail districts nationwide during the pandemic. Of course, no Colorado summer would be complete without a bit of R&R in the great outdoors. In Direction (page 41), we head to the Broadmoor’s epic fly fishing camp in Lake George. Nestled on the banks of the Tarryall River, it’s quite possibly the trip of a lifetime for any angler.

We’re also exploring the neighborhood’s most kidfriendly spots in this issue’s iteration of The List (page 26) and are stepping inside a stunning, modern Cherry Creek residence in Homecoming (page 45). Couple that with a Q&A from the talented man behind the bar at Kisbee on the Roof (page 28) and a night on the town at 801 Chophouse (page 30), and it’s a summer issue with a bit of something for everyone. Thank you for continuing to welcome us into your homes this summer and beyond. It’s our sincere privilege. Yours truly,

ROCHELLE MCNAUGHTON I’ve been in the real estate business for more than 20 years, selling luxury homes in all communities from Cherry Creek to North Denver to Castle Rock, while living in and specializing in the Cherry Hills and Greenwood Village enclaves. I view my profession as a career, not a part-time activity. When you contact me about selling your home, or searching for your perfect new home, you can be confident that you will be partnering with a seasoned real estate pro.
Today’s buyers are discerning and design-driven, making it more important than ever for a home to be not only inviting and attractive, but also up-to-date before it hits the market.

The all white kitchen is seeing a shift to make way for a new trend – black. Particularly on cabinets, black creates drama and personality while remaining neutral in its tone. A black kitchen is also a chic way to create separation between the rest of the home’s living spaces while remaining open concept.
After spending so much time at home, people are appreciating quality materials more than ever. The primary bathroom is seen as an oasis and homeowners are investing in beautiful fixtures that evoke a true sense of luxury. Bath jewelry – from faucets to drawer pulls and everything in between – is the perfectly decadent finishing touch.

When it comes to outdoor spaces, we are seeing a change from large, unused lawns to seating and entertaining areas that utilize every square inch on the yard. Homeowners and buyers alike are seeking purposeful outdoor designs that essentially serve as extra living space. From taking a Zoom call in a hammock to hosting a dinner party under a pergola, outdoor living is top of mind. Photo courtesy Storefront Life

THE INSPIRATION For this issue’s cover, we wanted to deviate from the fashion photography we typically capture and deliver something unexpected. Something intriguing. Something creative. We were inspired by the look and feel of vintage concert posters. The illustrations, the patterns, the colors and the lettering indicative of this genre all play together to create artwork that is both thought-provoking and fun. We took this concept and reimagined it for Cherry Creek. The result is a creative, original interpretation of the neighborhood and all that it embodies.

WIN E & D I N E Imagine a dining event in the heart of Cherry Creek North with no disruptions: no car traffic, no pedestrian traffic - only amazed and envious looks from onlookers. Currently in its 12th year, Cherry Creek North Food & Wine is welcoming guests back this August to celebrate and enjoy the diverse and sophisticated tastes of Cherry Creek North restaurants. This staple event, now expanded to four days, offers a lineup of intimate dining experiences, small bites, seminars and demos each day, which all build up to the Grand Tasting sessions on Fillmore Plaza. The event has been recrafted to highlight the extensive culinary options in the area and connect diners directly with chefs and mixologists to explore and savor their unique creations. New this year, a percentage of proceeds from the event will benefit Food For Thought Denver and their mission to fight childhood hunger in the Denver Community. Cherry Creek North Food & Wine kicks off Wednesday, August 11, and continues through Saturday, August 14, at various locations throughout the district.

Lobstah! Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls, which originated as a small lobster shack in Annapolis, Maryland in 2014, is opening its first Colorado location in the former Ink Coffee space on Second Avenue. Fatherand-son owners Gary and Michael Findlay plan to open the fast-casual restaurant in the next two months, and we couldn’t be happier to hear the news. Mason’s serves classic lobster rolls chilled with mayo and butter, Connecticut lobster rolls warm with butter, lobster salad rolls with mayo and celery, and a shrimp roll. The best part? Mason’s gets its lobsters from a single supplier in southern Maine, where it’s cooked and distributed while still fresh.

KID FRIENDLY SPOTS Summertime in Cherry Creek means plenty of adventures with the little ones. From sweet treats to outdoor exploration, the neighborhood has so much to offer for young families. Here, we share our favorite kid-friendly spots and activities in Cherry Creek.
1
Cherry Cricket A Cricket burger is an undoubted Cherry Creek rite of passage, and the legendary neighborhood eatery is also one of the area’s most kid-friendly. Take your littles for a Little Cricket while you sit on the sunny patio and people watch. The kids menu is certain to have a tiny crowd pleaser or two (PB&J, Burgers and Mac & Cheese are all de rigueur), and they’ll fit right in with the bustling, vibrant atmosphere. For bigger littles, there’s also a bevy of arcade games and, in the warmer months, an outdoor garden with lawn games and room to roam. 2641 East 2nd Avenue cherrycricket.com

Colorado Fresh Farmer’s Market For us, Cherry Creek’s best family-friendly activity happens every Wednesday and Saturday from May to September. The Colorado Fresh Market pops up on the western most perimeter of Cherry Creek Shopping Center, bringing with it locallygrown produce, artisanal sauces and spreads, fresh flowers and all-natural bath and bodycare. It’s a perfect way to spend a summer day with the little ones as you sample healthy, fresh fare. Teach them everything they need to know about supporting local and staying healthy while you stock up on seasonal goodies for the whole family. 3000 East 1st Avenue coloradofreshmarkets.com

Halcyon The swanky Halcyon hotel might not be the first place you’d think of for family fun, but the property offers a number of packages and activities geared towards little ones. The School’s Out special includes 15% off a guestroom, access to the gear garage (think bikes and other outdoor equipment), a $50 brunch credit to kid-friendly restaurant Local Jones and a late check out. Spend the day splashing around in Halcyon’s rooftop pool and the night gazing at the stars through a telescope that the hotel will have available for you and your brood. 245 Columbine Street halcyonhotelcherrycreek.com

Heaven Creamery
Is there anything more wholesome and pure than a family ice cream outing? Try ice cream made with ingredients that are equally wholesome and pure. Heaven Creamery, the Colorado-based brainchild of Martha Trillo, boasts a rotation of 500 flavors of frozen desserts, all of which are homemade with natural ingredients. The brand’s Milwaukee Street location is its second behind its original Southglenn digs and dishes up tasty treats free of processed sugar, artificial flavors, artificial colors, additives or ice-cream fillers. The shop, which has quickly become a go-to for Cherry Creek parents and kiddos alike, is known for its inventive, oftentimes quirky flavors like Green Matcha Blueberry Lavender and Vanilla, Butterfly Pea and Wildflower Gelato.

Denver Botanic Gardens With lush foliage, stunning florals and incredible installations, Denver Botanic Gardens is a favorite amongst Coloradoans and visitors alike. And the Gardens’ children’s programming is no exception. From building container gardens, to digging deep into soil, to painting and decorating stones over story hour, there’s a number of opportunities for your little nature lover to explore the world of flora and fauna. In fact, the Gardens even has a dedicated 3-acre space – Mordecai Children’s Gardens – for kids to engage in handson experiences while they roam and learn about plant life and Colorado’s ecosystems. 107 York Street botanicgardens.org
6
Young Americans We love everything about Young Americans, the Cherry Creek-based “kid’s bank” that teaches Colorado youth about financial literacy, business and entrepreneurship. The only of its kind in the world, the bank itself is all about children with classes, tools and tellers aimed at helping kids understand money. There’s also the Young American Center, which runs hands-on programs like AmeriTowne (a mock city where kids run businesses) and YouthBiz, which helps young entrepreneurs launch and manage their enterprises. 3350 East 1st Avenue yacenter.org
7
Little Feet & Enstrom We think this is the ultimate combination – new kicks at Denver’s OG children’s shoe store, and sweet treats at the neighboring candy shop. Little Feet has been a staple of the Cherry Creek community since the mid1980s and is the undisputed expert when it comes to, well, little feet. They’ll measure their soles to perfection and outfit them in brands like Stride Rite, Sperry, Hunter and See Kai Run. Afterwards, head a few doors down to Enstrom Candies and indulge in locally-made toffee, truffles or ice cream. Sugar and shoes. ba KISBEE ON THE ROOF What is it about a rooftop that makes drinking so much more fun? The view? The sunset? Feeling like you’re on top of the world? Add that perfect cocktail, cold beer or glass of wine and life feels pretty darn good. So, with summer nights in full swing and an awe-inspiring Colorado sky that redefines “masterpiece,” we’ll be on the roof. Specifically, Kisbee on the Roof, perched on top of The Jacquard where people watching, sky gazing and bartending are all part of this thoroughly enjoyable happy hour. Juan Lopez is the most popular person on this top floor, for he is the man with all the alcohol. So, who is this guy? From the strangest drink order he’s ever received and the best drink we’ve never had, to his favorite story about the margarita and what “Kisbee” actually means, we got the lowdown from high above Cherry Creek. What’s the best drink we’ve NEVER had?
summer cocktail THE BONFIRE OF THE BEACH
Chill Out Karen - a Miraval Froze with a touch of Grey Goose Watermelon & Basil vodka.
¾ oz
¾ oz
Is there a cocktail with a particularly interesting background or story to it that you like?
PINEAPPLE CHILE ANCHO SIMPLE SYRUP
LEMON JUICE
There are many theories about who invented the margarita. One version I like is about a Mexican restaurant owner named Carlos Herrera who made one for Ziegfeld showgirl Marjorie King. King was allergic to all forms of alcohol except tequila, but she didn’t like to drink the stuff straight. Herrera supposedly solved the problem by adding salt and lime and creating the world’s first margarita.

How did you get into this industry?
I started by watching Flair Bartenders Competitions* on YouTube. Seeing these pros give a show while giving great service really inspired me and gave me a passion to create cocktails for others. I like to think that each cocktail tells a story and I’m happy to be the author. *Editor’s Note – Those familiar with the Tom Cruise movie, Cocktail (1988), will have a great idea of what flair bartending is all about.
What’s the vibe of Kisbee of the Roof? How is it different from other bars in the neighborhood? Kisbee is a laid-back beach bar with the best view of the Rockies. The vibe is an elevated pool party with great drinks and incredible scenery.
What do you know about your Cherry Creek audience? Cherry Creek appreciates the familiarity of a local bar with the added bonus of our signature cocktails, elevated service and casual attitude.
Is there one drink in particular that you love to make? A classic old-fashioned. Keeping with good technique, it’s a cocktail that delivers, no matter the location.
What’s the oddest drink order you’ve ever received? A margarita with milk. That was a strange one.
Where do you get your inspiration? My country, Colombia.
What or who is Kisbee? Kisbee is in reference to Thomas Kisbee, a British naval officer who invented the Kisbee Ring (or as it’s now affectionately known, the “lifesaver”). This playful connection assures guests that their spirits will always be buoyed through our effervescent ambiance.
What’s a summer cocktail that you recommend? A Kanaloa Cooler, which is hibiscus simple syrup, lemon juice and Mythology Vodka.

801 CHOPHOUSE We’re married. We work together. We see each other all the time. So, what could we possibly talk about while out for dinner? Come along on our adventures in dining as we discuss food, family and everything in between.
Kevin: They’re bringing out the big guns to start. I like their style. A truffle chip with A5 Wagyu topped with caviar as a quick knockout of an amuse bouche. This is incredible. Betsy: Most people will go their entire lives without tasting an A5 Wagyu. My culinary gratitude is overflowing right now! It is a transcendent experience. Melt in your mouth, deliciously tender. Coupled with truffle and caviar, I honestly cannot think of anything more decadent.
There’s just something to be said for a restaurant that maintains its modernity while staying true to nods of yesterday.”
Kevin: It sounds simple enough, but I can name a lot of places that get this wrong – warm bread and soft butter.
Betsy: Right? Such a pet peeve. Honestly, is there anything better? Such a perfect comfort food, but only when all of the elements are on point. Tonight, they definitely are.
Kevin: The song on right now is what Belushi filled up his cafeteria tray to in Animal House. Can you imagine the damage he’d do here at 801? Like this Spanish Octopus with this yummy brava sauce, the Hudson valley Foie Gras with the strawberry rhubarb jam that tastes like breakfast, and these fried lobster bites. Although, with all due respect to the late comedic genius, I doubt John had that refined a palate. Betsy: More remarkable dishes. As someone who doesn’t typically eat Foie Gras simply because of the animal lover in me, it was nice to know that 801’s iteration is humanely raised. That makes a huge difference. And paired with the strawberry jam and crostini, it is the perfect dish. Kevin: When the General Manager, Lindsay Esquivel, asked if I needed anything else, and I said, “a hammock,” you thought that was a “Dad Joke.” I think a “Dad Joke” would have been saying, “This feast is 801 hundred percent delicious.”
Betsy: Ha! Touché. Kevin: Remember when they were open for lunch back in the day? They had the best club sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. Truly unstoppable in my book. Betsy: Loved lunching at 801. Such a classic spot with a great vibe. But dinner is even better. I really appreciate the mood as much as the food. There’s just something to be said for a restaurant that maintains its modernity while staying true to nods of yesterday. The dim lighting, the deep colors, the music – it just feels special.

Kevin: You’d think I’d never consumed water out of a high ball glass before. This is now twice that I’ve spilled down the front of my shirt. This whole “eating in public” thing again is apparently going to take some getting used to. I’m a mess. Thank goodness for that dim lighting you mentioned. Betsy: That lapse in coordination aside, it does feel good to be dining out in normalcy again, doesn’t it?
Kevin: I was excited to see if the scalloped potatoes are still as good as I remember. They are. This crispy, breaded, cheesy top layer is unforgettable. So good.
Betsy: They are legendary, but for me it is the mac and cheese. They do an amazing job with it. One of those “worth the calories” dishes and easily my favorite mac and cheese in the neighborhood. And, while simple, the asparagus is incredible as well. Perfectly cooked and full of flavor.
Kevin: Chef Kyle Viera and his team are crushing it. Did I say, “Oh my God!” too loud after that first bite of the Filet Mignon with the Cognac Butter and Mushroom Ragout? Betsy: That was a fabulous dish! I also loved my filet medallions with béarnaise, Oscar style. The surf and turf combination there really cannot be beat. Then there were the chantarelle mushrooms. What a treat! They’re one of those rare dishes that you feel privileged to try, much like the Wagyu from the amuse bouche course.
Kevin: This is the second time this phenomenon has happened recently – I’m not a chocolate guy, and yet I mowed through this Death by Chocolate Cake dessert. Their pastry chef is next level. My money is on her if Cherry Creek ever has a pastry chef tournament.

Betsy: Easily. Kevin: This wall of wine bottles is insane. Probably 20 feet high and 30 feet long. Did you find something from there that you like?
Betsy: There’s not much I don’t like about that wall. In particular, I loved the Hall Cabernet. It paired perfectly with such a delightful meal.

DOUG PARSONS WHITE PEACOCK Where is he hightailing it to for his first vacation since COVID? What’s his favorite happy hour spot in Cherry Creek North? Man About Town Doug Parsons, owner of the unrivaled home and gift store White Peacock, has some stories to tell – including the item he took home from the store so no one else could have it, and whom he’s inviting over for his ultimate dinner party.
Do you have any favorite haunts in the neighborhood? Depends on my mood! If I want tea it’s Ku Cha House of Tea, if it’s a beautiful day I like to sit outside at Starbucks on Fillmore, and if I’m with someone who’s visiting and want a unique vibe then I go to Aviano. For a casual happy hour with friends I like to go to Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar. For local shopping, I want to shout out Revampt, The Brass Bed, The Vineyard, Artisan Center and Show of Hands.
With regards to what you can find at White Peacock, how do you come up with what you’re looking for to fill the store? Here at White Peacock, I believe there’s a place for both the traditional and the avantgarde. I am constantly reaching out to friends in the industry, studying new trends, and networking with stores out of state to understand what’s going on in markets in other parts of the country. Just like any other industry, it’s ever-changing, and you have to change and evolve with it.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve witnessed while working at White Peacock? After the COVID shutdown, we were so moved by the support we received from the local community.
What are the three items you can’t live without?
What’s the last great movie that you’ve enjoyed watching?
Laughter. Relationships with others. My down time.
Shirley Valentine. An oldie but goodie. Great reminder that no matter what stage of life you’re in, whether you hang with others or are alone, continue to be inspired, force yourself to grow and stretch and learn and love and experience and matter. Never let anyone dim your light.
Speaking of down time, where are you going for your next vacation? Puerto Vallarta!
Who are your five dream guests to join you at a dinner party, and what are you eating?
What’s a surprising fact to working in your industry that people working outside it may not know? In the retail space, you’re focused on the business aspects, but, in reality, it’s so much more than that. You’re creating friendships and relationships with your customers and other business owners, some of them lifelong. There’s such a sense of community that develops.
What item from the store would you take home for yourself in a heartbeat? Not only would I take them home, I did take them home! They’re Baccarat glasses. M

CANDACE DURAN HALCYON, A HOTEL IN CHERRY CREEK A Pueblo native, Candace Duran has spent her entire career in Colorado’s hospitality business. From Vail to Denver, she’s done it all. Today, the petite, bubbly brunette is a mainstay of Cherry Creek’s hotel scene, serving as Halcyon’s Director of Sales and Marketing since the property’s 2017 opening. Here, the well-known (and well-loved) gal about town shares her passion for great food, great fashion, great friends and all things Cherry Creek.
What is your favorite thing about Cherry Creek? The neighbors of Cherry Creek, of course! Cherry Creek has become my home away from home. There is a feeling of inclusion the moment you are welcomed into the district. I have never experienced a neighborhood quite like it. Whether you are an independent or international business, we all celebrate each other’s success and support the overall growth. I am so thankful for our neighborhood and the people that keep it going – cheers to you!
Describe your personal style. A cross between Elle Woods meets Cardi B. I tend to favor bold colors and prints. I embrace my curves in figure-hugging silhouettes. At 4’11, I appreciate a professional yet plunging neckline, short hems, and always have on a pair of heels. I try to make the most of accessorizing as another way to add intrigue to my look. As a 40-something, it’s been a must to put a lot of time and effort into my personal grooming, and the Cherry Creek neighborhood supports me with the latest beauty tips and fashion trends.
Favorite thing about Halcyon? Being an independent hotel. When you love what you do, you truly feel like you haven’t worked a day in your life. At Halcyon, we have the opportunity to give influence on the brands we represent. So, all of our ladies and gentlemen have the chance to add their fingerprint and personal touch.
A friend is coming to visit Cherry Creek for the first time. What are the “insider tips” you share with her before her stay? Eat, sleep, shop, and stay in Cherry Creek! Life feels good here, 16 blocks of unique fashion, jewelry, spas, salons, art galleries, and restaurants from all over the world. Cherry Creek is an urban oasis for the best life has to offer. We don’t close at 5 pm anymore. We are buzzing in different dimensions!
Anyplace she can’t skip? Drink it in. You must experience B&GC, a hidden jewel. There’s an air of mystery in the dim catacombs of B&GC, and you never know who you might see through the candlelight.

Who is your style icon? Easily Italy’s most recognizable movie star, Sophia Loren – she’s a true style icon. Her retro fashions of the ‘50s and ‘60s solidified her as the “OG” bombshell. Her exotic looks were praised by many, and she really was the epitome of Hollywood glamour. And she taught me how to embrace my curves!
Five dream dinner party guests? 1. M ichelle Obama to make sure that everyone is on their A-game! 2. C ardi B, to keep the party going! 3. D rew Barrymore to bring the lightness and laughter! 4. O prah Winfrey, since she will ask the tough questions and pay for dinner! 5. Rose Baca (Grandma) to fill the table with love and gratitude!
Favorite way to relax on a weekend? Pool hair, don›t care! Poolside is my best side. It›s bathing suit season, so bring out the bikinis and flip-flops! After a week of hustling and bustling, lounging around with my family and friends, poolside catching some rays, and relaxing is my thing.
Favorite Cherry Creek restaurant? Local Jones, of course! Great food. Great wine. Great company. I also do love the street tacos and margaritas from Machete!
Most beautiful place you’ve visited in Colorado? Telluride in the summer. It is brimming with colorful history, diverse culture, action-packed adventure amongst the majestic alpine beauty.
In the world? Capri, Italy. Capri is pure romance with dramatic views, the bluest ocean you’ve ever seen, the scent of lemon blossoms in the air. The luminescent Blue Grotto, striking Faraglioni Rocks and the Palazzo al Mare!
Do you “collect” anything? Shoes! My favorite is the classic black patent leather Mary Jane from Manolo Blahnik.

VIVE Float Studio Chronic pain. Stress. Insomnia. Eczema. Inflammation. We all have our ailments, and with more information floating around than one could possibly keep up with, it’s difficult to know exactly what works – and what doesn’t. Enter VIVE, the self-described “rest and recovery wellness center” that’s taking the neighborhood by storm. But don’t assume that it’s simply another spa. Quite the contrary. The only of its kind in the region, if not the country, VIVE focuses on much more than relaxation, but rather mental and physical recovery. As founder Andi Sigler explains, it’s all about a calm, curative experience. “From the moment you step into the studio, you’ll feel at peace. It’s an incredibly calm environment, and we believe that’s vital for your time of restoration.” Indeed, everything about the spacious subterranean studio is calming. A spacious relaxation lounge – The Quiet Center – serves as a serene space where plush textiles, cozy oversized seating and a fireplace offer the ideal backdrop to indulge in a cup of tea, and simply be. From there, VIVE offers a spectrum of experiences, all aimed at creating long-term, lasting results. With state-of-the-art equipment that’s rarely available to consumers, and certainly not all under one roof, VIVE stands out from the pack. “We’re the first national rest and recovery wellness center with all of these services in one location,” Sigler reveals. The services she references include an Infrared Sauna, Float Therapy, Cryotherapy, VibroAcoustic Sound Therapy, and Halotherapy. According to Sigler, each of these modalities offers its own unique, highly effective benefits for both the body and mind.
36
SU M M ER 2021
The service for which VIVE is best known, float therapy, is a gravity-free experience that allows the body to enter a state of sensory deprivation, which, in turn, promotes healing. Yet, while most float therapy services are performed in a small pod or tank,VIVE sets the industry bar with its large, unique Wave Float Rooms. A glass entry door, heated “buffer zone,” contour ceiling, and roomy experience make a huge difference in the experience. With no real skill required, it’s a physically passive form of total wellness that simultaneously restores the body and revives the mind. “Floating is about everything you won’t be doing,” Sigler laughs. “You won’t be fighting gravity. The 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt in the water takes care of that while you lie effortlessly on your back. Every muscle is allowed to gradually relieve its functional tensions. Your entire body, including internal organs, muscles and bones will be completely rested and at ease.”
INFRARED SAUNA The benefits of an infrared sauna session are plentiful – detoxification, weight loss, anti-aging, pain relief – and naturally, VIVE’s version takes it up a notch…or three. “VIVE offers a 3-in-1 sauna that blends the optimal wavelengths—near, mid, and far—to achieve specific results. Seven preset wellness programs are ready to use at the touch of a button,” Sigler describes. “In addition to the full-spectrum benefits of our sauna, we also offer the full-benefits of Chromotherapy (color) and Acoustic Resonance Therapy (A.R.T. or Sound Waves).”
Every muscle is allowed to gradually relieve its functional tensions. Your
CRYOTHERAPY Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to expose the body to ultra-low temperatures, causing the peripheral tissues to constrict and send blood from the skin surface, muscle tissue, and surrounding joint space to the core. As the blood travels to the core, it passes through the cardiovascular system where it is cleansed of toxins and supplied with oxygen, nutrients, and enzymes. As long as the exposure to the extremely cold temperature continues, the body continues to flush the tissue of toxins and circulate blood between the cardiovascular system and the vital organs on a continuous loop. The result? A complete detox and a super-fighter against chronic pain and inflammation. As you might expect by now, VIVE offers the most advanced, highly coveted Cryotherapy equipment available, resulting in exponentially better results. What’s more, the studio offers whole body Cryotherapy, spot specific treatments, and Facial Focus Cryotherapy.
entire body, including internal organs, muscles and bones will be completely rested and at ease.”
VIBROACOUSTIC SOUND THERAPY VibroAcoustic Sound Therapy (VAT) is a science-based treatment that uses mild sound and gentle vibrations to create a gentle massage, which in turn can reduce stress, relieve pain, restore balance and enhance the quality of life. VAT addresses the issues for which sounds are helpful and aims to ‘retune’ the body back into harmony, stimulating the regulatory, metabolic and immune systems back into balance.
HALOTHERAPY Halotherapy (also known as dry salt therapy) is an effective holistic approach, offering a natural and drug-free relief from many respiratory and skin conditions. Salt Therapy’s revitalizing effects benefit both adults and children suffering with respiratory and skin issues. “During a salt therapy session, the room remains sealed to make sure there is a proper amount of diffused salt in the air,” Sigler details. “Salt rooms are designed in such a way so that people can relax in a soothing and tranquil environment. It’s a place where one can sit back and experience the salt treatment in a very peaceful and non-stressful setting.”

For whatever reason, this batch of recommended viewing is located in the darker part of the parking lot, if you will. There’s mystery and the unknown shrouded in each project, and I found them very well done. If I find myself thinking about an episode an hour, a day or even a week later then it has clearly left a mark…and that’s the telltale sign of a great story to me. For those of you who find interest in crime thrillers and human behavior, these might be for you.

KINGDOM Buckle up and be ready for anything. Not for the faint of heart, this gripping drama is centered on a dysfunctional family in the MMA industry in Venice Beach, California. It’s a flawless cast led by Frank Grillo, Kiele Sanchez, Matt Lauria, Nick Jonas and an all-time character created by Jonathan Tucker. I found the acting so real and genuine that it may result in you becoming personally attached to these characters. Highly addicting to see what happens next, the only shame is that it ended after three astounding seasons. Admittedly, I gravitate to dramas that are executed at a high level and Kingdom found a place on my list as one of the greats. GRAVEYARD FIELDS BY STEVEN TINGLE Davis Reed is plagued by the three “A’s”: anger, alcohol, and anxiety. A former Charleston police officer-turned private detective, Davis hopes to gain some respect, self and otherwise, by writing a book. His subject: the true story of a B-25 bomber that crashed on Cold Mountain in western North Carolina just after the end of World War II. From the comfort of a mountain cabin in Cruso, North Carolina, Davis spends his days popping anti-anxiety pills, drinking copious amounts of home brewed beer, and not writing a book. But when he discovers a set of keys on a mountain trail, he becomes curious, then obsessed, about finding the rightful owner. With the help of his friend Dale Johnson, a 275-pound local deputy who is full-time ornery and part-time clever, and Dale’s cousin Floppy, a motor mouthed mechanic with a penchant for conspiracy theories and kleptomania, Davis works to uncover the mystery of the keys while navigating a world of small town secrets, shady characters, 80’s heavy metal, and murder.

A dark teen drama steeped in ’90s nostalgia, a tawdry fashion miniseries and a smart, edgy comedy. This summer, I’m all about binge watching.
HACKS Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are unlikely yet perfectly paired costars in this irreverent, intelligent comedy about a veteran female comedienne and her reluctant young writer. Genuinely funny yet equally dramatic, Hacks is a comedy about comedy – a premise that delivers plenty of laughs alongside its thought-provoking storyline. Funny in all the right places, the show touches on hot topics like sexism and cancel culture all while remaining light enough to make it bingeworthy.

HALSTON Fashion lovers will appreciate this edgy Netflix miniseries, if not only for the wardrobe. Halston is the story behind the eponymous famed (or perhaps infamous) designer, following his life and career from an Indiana farm to the king of American couture. Ewan McGregor nails the title role, perfectly capturing the decadence and debauchery for which the late designer was known. But underneath the sex, drugs, people and parties was a creative genius whose brilliance was arguably unmatched. From his meteoric rise in the 1970s to his series of bad business decisions that ultimately tarnished his label, Halston is steeped in both decadence and drama.

MINDHUNTER Set in the late 1970s, two FBI agents are tasked with interviewing serial killers to solve open cases. There is plenty of programming that revolves around serial killers, and I’ll give most of it a look. This is a nice break from all the documentaries, while still providing the shock, awe, and fascination with a culture that viewers like myself could never imagine being anything but a television audience for. Two seasons are complete with fingers crossed that a third will begin production soon.
Watch it on NETFLIX
MARE OF EASTTOWN Let’s start off with, “Whoa.” A seven-part series finds this crime thriller in a small, blue collar Pennsylvania town that’s in the news because of a murder of a local. Kate Winslet is an acting force as Mare, a vape-sucking, alcohol swilling, rough-around-the-edges homicide detective who’s assigned to the case while battling her own inner demons. There are plenty of well-developed characters to contend with in this mystery that has its fair share of layers, twists and turns. Buyer beware – the subject matter reveals itself to be quite heavy when it’s all said and done. Come awards season, I won’t be the least bit surprised if this mini-series and Winslet are in the mix to take home some bling.
Watch it on HBO and HBO MAX
CRUEL SUMMER There’s something perfectly indulgent about this lurid teen thriller. Told over three summers in the mid-1990s, the dark, salacious story follows the lives and loves of pretty, well-liked Kate Wallis and brainy, awkward Jeanette Turner. Executive produced by Jessica Biel, Cruel Summer centers on Kate’s sudden disappearance and Turner’s Cinderella-like transformation into the most popular girl in school. Kate’s boyfriend soon becomes Jeanette’s new boyfriend, Kate’s friends Jeanette’s new friends, and so on until the entire community begins to wonder if she had something to do with her classmate’s disappearance. When Kate ultimately resurfaces after having been kidnapped, she accuses Jeanette (on national television no less) of being involved, taking viewers on a dark, twisted tale of teenage angst, with the ‘90s soundtrack to match.

Broadmoor Fly Fishing Camp BY KEVIN MARR
@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG

“You just hooked the biggest fish in a river that spans 60 miles.” Josh Tubre knew what he was talking about. The Louisiana native might as well have gills because this man knows everything about fishing. As my guide, there would have been a snowball’s chance in New Orleans that I’d have found this fish fight without him. He could do this blindfolded, and here I was hooking his Moby Dick that he’s been tracking for three years without a bite. So, his compliment felt amazing. Until the biggest fish in the river got away. But what a rush. Four to five minutes of battle until this rainbowed devil of a trout got downstream on me and all bets were off. Tubre estimates that this elusive rascal is 28 inches in length. My embarrassment in not netting it extends much further in length than that. So, where are we?
The Tarryall River in Lake George, Colorado. In the middle of nowhere. But also in the middle of fly fishing heaven courtesy of the Orvis-endorsed Broadmoor Fly Fishing Camp. What a blessing. Time to reboot. Shut down the engines. Focus on that little floating bobber on the water and zone….out. When I arrived and was walking to my cabin that was built nearly 100 years ago (but updated inside), I met Dottie from Maui and Donna from Encinitas down near San Diego. They asked me what day it was. They’d been here a few days and had lost track. That, to me, said it all. Not a care in the world, other than to catch some trout on more than five miles of private river frontage that offers some of the best angling in the state. There’s nothing like losing track of time on a 76-acre mountain paradise where nothing is required of you other than to relax. There are only eight cabins. That’s it. You’re likely to encounter more people at a gas station.

You connect for three meals a day where our discussions ranged from college football, the fish you caught or didn’t catch, and the early morning woodpecker, to life back at home, a Tom Petty concert at Red Rocks, and how Nomadland with Frances McDormand wasn’t a good film, let alone an Academy Awardwinning project. In between eating, everyone disappears with their guide into the Lost Creek Wilderness until it’s time to feast again. And feast we did. Aaron Kuper is the manager and oversees everything. Talk about a one-man band. That’s the thing with The Broadmoor - it’s a company full of all-stars. Kuper is responsible for all the cooking, and he received his culinary training from the renowned team back at the mothership in Colorado Springs. So, you’re far from roughing it at chow time when the Chicago native rolls out breakfasts that include all the usual suspects, but has you thinking you’re at a high-end restaurant and not a rustic main lodge far from civilization. Then, when dinner features Caesar Salad, Brown Butter Trout, Asparagus, Roasted Potatoes, Wagyu Steak, and Sorbet with Berries, you’re reminded that while you’re technically at a camp – it’s at The Broadmoor camp.
Back on the Tarryall, it wasn’t all about the one that got away. That’s just the most interesting story. I got some camera time with a few of these river dwellers, including a brown trout that I caught while listening to Led Zeppelin’s “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” on my phone. Ironically, that brown trout didn’t leave me and swim downstream until after it was hooked, netted and gazed at in all its beauty. It’s another fun story to share with my new friends from Dallas or Nashville or Corpus Christi, Texas, at cocktail hour, sipping on my third Coors while listening to John Coltrane spinning on the record player. To be clear, this camp isn’t strictly for fishing. It is, however, strictly for enjoying. Go hiking, horseback riding, catch up on sleep, read a book, or write a book while you’re there, for that matter. It’s all about getting away from the hustle and bustle. And please…somebody catch that beast of a rainbow trout that got away.

ftentimes, marrying the notions of modern architecture and family-friendly livability is a lofty, if not impossible feat. Yet in the case of 2610 East Cedar Avenue, that’s exactly what was achieved. Using a tactical approach that married the outside with the interior environment, BOSS Architecture and Montare Builders created a residence that is arguably as comfortable as it is beautiful. And while incredibly private with absolutely no windows visible from the facade, the home also allows for ample natural light with its floor-to-ceiling glass design. A design that is not only incredibly rare, but also ideal for its central locale in the midst of bustling Cherry Creek. With more than 7,000 expansive square feet built around a central courtyard, the structure boasts five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. And while it was constructed with top-of-the-line, modern materials, the home remains approachable and conducive to everyday living with young children.

The home’s main level is rich with custom millwork and natural light, making for a contemporary yet decidedly intimate vibe. A sunken dining room offers unexpected architectural panache, as does a custom three-sided peninsula fireplace, a Bocci 73 chandelier, a dual-sided glass wine cabinet and a wall of low-profile planter boxes that serves as a continuation of sorts from the courtyard just beyond. Naturally, the kitchen serves as the heart of the home, and a stunning one at that. A striking limestone waterfall island playfully intersects with a live edge table by local woodworker Taavi Designs. Dark wood and warm millwork cabinetry are elevated by a lack of visible hardware, which not only makes the design sleek, but also child-friendly. Ultra-high-end appliances and natural quartzite counters add to the modern yet livable tone of the space, as does a unique custom pendant light. Upstairs, all of the home’s bedrooms boast en suite bathrooms and walk-in closets, and all are adorned with ambient natural light and fine natural materials. The children’s spaces are modern yet playful with graphic wallcoverings in muted hues, while the primary bedroom serves as the true piece de resistance. Grooved oak and contemporary pendant lights frame the headboard wall, while a fireplace graces the far wall, emitting warmth throughout the space without overpowering the sleek composition. While the stackable glass doors provide views into the pool area, an additional private deck is tucked within the front façade of the home, giving owners a serene respite to enjoy all to themselves.

Lavish yet demure, the primary bathroom features a glass-enclosed walk-in shower, Toto Washlet, a wide Negresco vanity and a freestanding soaking tub, while the custom walk-in feels more like a luxury boutique than a closet. The home’s lower level is ideal for casual family time and guest retreats alike with a media room outlined by a Shinnoki wet bar, a gaming room crowned by an Apparatus Arrow chandelier and guest bedrooms that are reminiscent of art galleries with bright white walls and natural light flowing in from large egress windows. Nearby, the home gym is impressive and spacious, even boasting an infrared sauna. Outdoors, the home’s courtyard is an entertainer’s dream – a true oasis within the city that connects to almost every indoor space surrounding it. A decadent swimming pool and hot tub blend beautifully with the property’s au currant architecture, while a Wolf grill, pizza oven, outdoor projector and lavish landscaping create a resort-like experience, all within the comforts of home.

How Cherry Creek North Bounced Back From COVID Unlike Any Other
BY KEVIN MARR
50
SU M M ER 2021
WAS NICK LEMASTERS THE LAST MAN ON EARTH? HE WAS LOOKING AT CHERRY CREEK NORTH AND SAW A GHOST TOWN.
If this was a movie, you’d half expect to see zombies or Woody Harrelson hunting zombies but, sadly, this was the COVID-19 reality a year ago. The President and CEO of Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District (BID) might have taken his chances with the undead versus the stark wakeup call that eerily whispered through the silence of the empty neighborhood streets – life, at this startling moment, had stopped. Stores and businesses closed. Hotels shut down. Restaurants were on life support. “You’re accustomed to a neighborhood with a lot of activity and foot traffic and people engaging with one another. Suddenly it was gone.” LeMasters, with his hands folded while donning a navy blue pullover and dress shirt, calmly reminisces the state of the community from the conference room in his office. While everything at the time had abruptly disappeared from normalcy, his team was far from missing, and what would ensue from this incredible committee would remarkably reshape and resuscitate a district drowning from an unknown and sinister pandemic. “Our mission is really in our name,” LeMasters begins. “We are a business improvement district. That’s what we are charged with doing and that’s what we’re paid to do.” So, while improving the neighborhood on a daily basis doesn’t normally entail the X factor of a global virus, the BID was more than
equipped to start taking action. The first order of business was addressing the ground floor retailers and stores. How could they be of help and what could they do to assist? Safety was going to be paramount. “There were no people in the district. We felt vulnerable, quite honestly. We decided that we needed to do whatever we could to assist in maintaining a level of safety and we ended up hiring private security to help with more eyes and ears on the ground for the stores and these property owners.” With around-the-clock security in place, the bigger task at hand remained in preserving businesses in whatever way possible… and quickly. “As soon as we found out that we could open on a limited basis, we jumped into action and did a couple of things,” LeMasters explains. “This was the first neighborhood in Denver to provide personal protective equipment (PPE). We put together kits with masks, gloves, tape, hand sanitizer and anything else that helped with social distancing and made them available to anyone who needed it.” How many hours were spent on strategy and ideas to navigate through COVID? In a word, plenty. “Were there a lot of meetings? You bet there were,” Nick says matterof-factly. “We were asking ourselves hard questions, and that’s where the idea of getting PPE into everybody’s hands came from. It was @CHE RRYCRE E K MAG
then copied by the city and the county of Denver. I was on calls with the Denver Department of Economic Development telling them what we were doing and, the next thing I know, they’re doing it all over the city. I’m proud that we led that.” LeMasters and his team were also the creators of the idea for curbside pickup and to-go service, a concept that quickly spread throughout Denver. “We had signs all over this place and though it might seem like a simple thing, it mattered to our restaurateurs – that’s for sure. Keeping it simple and keeping it focused was part of our agenda from the start.” All the while, communication was king. Without it, little is getting done as quickly and as successfully as it did. “I was really proud of our team and the amazing job we did in being a conduit for information as things were coming down from government entities. We were able to blast that information out through our channels whether it was for PPP loans or any change in guidance and direction on the part of the government. Fortunately, folks read our emails and they were able to react quickly.”
LeMasters continues, “We stayed very connected with the merchant community. I will tell you that emotions did run the full spectrum from those who weren’t sure if their businesses were going to remain open to those who just said, ‘Alright. We’ve got to buck up and do the best we can under difficult circumstances.’ Of course, every store’s circumstances were different as far as cash flow, lenient landlords and vendors, but we had very few permanent COVID closures.” Some retailers have even reported to LeMasters and his team that their businesses in recent weeks have been better than it was in 2019 prior to the pandemic. The momentum is clearly on the rise.

SU M M ER 2021
“PEOPLE LIKE TO DINE OUTSIDE IN DENVER. WHY WOULDN’T YOU?” In fact, this is where the recovery effort becomes even more remarkable. New stores. New openings. More construction. More businesses slated to move in. Cherry Creek North has had more new stores open since COVID than those that closed by a significant margin. Why? To hear LeMasters tell it, it’s simple…location, location, location. Businesses coming in love who they’re seeing as their neighbors. Retail. Restaurants. Galleries. Hotels. Wellness facilities. It’s a tremendous mix. Then there’s the outdoor element that he swears by in citing as a primary reason for the neighborhood’s bounce back as well as why new companies are settling in, not the least of which are more restaurants. And, speaking of the countless eateries, there’s hope that the saving grace for restaurants during COVID that was sidewalk dining will become a permanent fixture. “I hope it stays forever. I love it,” LeMasters shares with a smile. “Thankfully the city was open to sidewalk dining during the pandemic because it was particularly difficult for restaurants to stay afloat with limited service and capacity. I think it lends a whole new activation to the streets. People like to dine outside in Denver. Why wouldn’t you?” Assuming the vaccination rates continue to ascend and things continue to move the needle in the right direction, LeMasters possesses extreme optimism for the neighborhood, more than he’s ever had for Cherry Creek North at any period. Addressing the highly-anticipated return of tourism, in particular, is first and foremost with their messaging and marketing.
co-existing across the street from a super regional shopping center,” he explains. “It’s usually one or the other. Rarely do you see them together both thriving, so we’re really in a strong position.” Since he was 15-years-old, Nick has been a part of the retail industry on some level. Needless to say, he can speak volumes about the trade and is an unquestionable authority on the subject. So, when he points out the effects and the role that this district plays in the big picture earnings for the city of Denver, it’s not something to gloss over. “When one considers the sales tax revenue, property tax revenue and things of that nature, this is a very vibrant community that contributes substantially to the city of Denver’s coffers. I think people lose sight of that. I hope they don’t, but I think Cherry Creek means a lot to the Denver brand and we’re able to provide revenue for the city that has impact all over Denver and neighborhoods everywhere. And I would include both sides of the street on that – Cherry Creek North and Cherry Creek Shopping Center.” And to think, a year ago, this surreal, life-altering monster was incomprehensible. Something straight out of science fiction. It’s night and day now. And LeMasters counts his blessings, “I’ve learned to be very humble and thankful for good health and not take what we have for granted. To be able to come to work here every day is a privilege. I can’t underscore this enough – people feel safe in Cherry Creek North and that’s something we take very seriously.” He pauses. Then he adds, “I really do believe the best is yet to come.”
“There are very few places in the country where you have this amazing outdoor shopping and mixed use environment successfully

DINING Among many other things, 2020 taught us just how much we love restaurants. Dining is about so much more than food. It’s a convivial experience that brings people and communities together. And if that’s not enough, Cherry Creek’s lineup of top notch eateries is undeniably one of the most impressive in the state. From mom-and-pop bistros in tucked away corners to names that have gained nationally notoriety, our

Hands down (pun intended) the best masseuse we’ve ever encountered, Borgmann, who operates in an unassuming space above The Brass Bed, is a master of her craft and her cult-like following of clients agree. Using a combination of traditional and alternative modalities like cupping, hot stones and LED pain therapy, her treatments are a cut above and will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and most importantly, pain-free. Helpful hint: she’s easily the best in town at prenatal massage and has a specialty maternity table with cutouts for breasts and belly – the only way to go when you’re expecting.

There’s a reason why Rise Nation workouts burn nearly twice as many calories as other cardio routines. Unlike other fitness machines, the Versaclimber doesn’t retain momentum, meaning you earn every foot of elevation your 30-minute climb. 155 St. Paul Street risenationco.com / @risenationco

Given the number of options for a great workout and great trainers in Cherry Creek, standing at the top of the apex is quite the honor. Our readers agree that for their money, it doesn’t get any better than The Studio’s Tim Harris. In fact, many of them followed him to the space from the former Pura Vida (RIP). With clients from the likes of 10 NFL teams, the Colorado Avalanche, the LA Kings, Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Rockies and Cleveland Indians, it’s safe to say that the 11-year industry veteran is a pro. Using a unique blend of functional training and athletic conditioning, Harris has the results to back up his reputation.

The art at The Jacquard, all of which was curated by Nine dot Arts (Halcyon, Moxy) is intended to reflect the collection of a world traveler. One of the marquee pieces in the collection, which is visible from the street, is a 16-foot suspended neon sculpture with an LED component by Denver-based artist Scott Young. The color-changing sculpture titled I Have Seen Things You Would Never Believe extends from the ceiling of the hotel’s second floor. Our favorite, however, is BB by Patrick Kane McGregor.
