hile this certainly isn’t the letter we’d expected to craft as we welcome you to spring, it’s one we write with heartfelt thought and genuine sentiment. As our community changes profoundly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are more committed than ever to being a source of insight and inspiration for both our readers and our fellow small business owners. We hope that the pages to follow can bring you levity and light throughout the coming months. From bright spring fashion and collectible vintage cars (Two for the Road, page 46) to a trip to picturesque Grand Cayman (page 42) and a stunning Cherry Creek wedding (page 38), this issue offers plenty of escape and indulgence.

Of greater significance, this issue of Cherry Creek Magazine celebrates the small businesses that define our neighborhood. The dreamers and doers, the visionaries and the entrepreneurs who are the heart and soul of Cherry Creek. In Local Love (page 57), we explore the myriad ways to support the area’s homegrown businesses in the face of the novel coronavirus.
Now, more than ever, we must rally around our small businesses so that they can navigate these uncharted waters and thrive once again. It’s a notion that, quite literally, hits home for Cherry Creek Magazine. We, too, are a small local business. In fact, as a husband and wife team with an incredible two-year-old son and a second on the way in June, we are the very definition of “mom and pop” shop. Because of this, we take our work to heart. We know what it is like to be fearlessly passionate about our business. To build a livelihood for our family from the ground up and in many ways, to depend on the support of our Cherry Creek community for the success of that livelihood. In this spirit, we are thrilled to announce our first annual Peak of the Creek awards. We believe that there is no better or more important time to celebrate the best and the brightest of Cherry Creek. From your favorite local restaurant, to the hairstylist you love, to the boutique with the most beautifully-curated collections, this is our opportunity to shout our gratitude for Cherry’s Creek’s colorful businesses from the rooftops. Head to our website (cherrycreekmag. com) from April 24th – August 24th and cast your vote. We’ll reveal the top honors in our Fall/Winter issue – a sentiment that will undoubtedly feel extra sweet come October. As we continue to pioneer this new normal, we leave you with these parting thoughts… May you remember that you are not stuck at home, you are safe at home. May you know that good health and good friends are the most important assets of all. May you find beauty in these moments and cherish this unexpected time with your loved ones. We are confident that our community will rise to the occasion and come out the other side with greater appreciation for the people and places that shape our neighborhood. Wishing you health and happiness from our growing family to yours. Warmly,
Betsy Marr Publisher + Editor-in-Chief

contribut or KATIE BRADSHAW "I first fell in love with photography when I took my high school's film/darkroom classes where I learned on my own how to shoot manually and compose images... mostly of my childhood dog. Being an only child, she was the face of all my homework projects. After I graduated high school I went "all in" and started my business at just 18-years- old. In that 10 year span I've been published in 45 magazines, three of those being the cover. This issue of Cherry Creek Magazine is my fourth cover – something I’m incredibly proud of. I have photographed Broncos players, three celebrities and I've shot weddings out of the country in eight different states. Besides all of that I have met some of the most incredible people along the way. I am blessed to have so many friends because of this "job."

THE INSPIRATION “We’ve always had an appreciation for the classics, and this 1956 Porsche 356A Carrera Speedster is certainly no exception. A rarity in every sense, it is the eighth model of only 151 produced, making it one of the most collectible Porsches ever created. We were privileged to use it as the star of our cover shot, and we like to think of tastemakers from years gone by like Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway in such an automobile.”
-Betsy Marr, Editor in Chief
Luminous Foundation, $33
THE BEAUTY “The inspiration for our cover look was “sultry starlet.” Jules and Chad were the perfect models with her classic beauty and his rugged good looks. For Jules, we played up the vintage vibe with hair and for her makeup, went for a bold red lip, a flawless complexion and dramatically lined eye. All of this was achieved using Flaunt You! Cosmetics - a local custom cosmetics brand available at The Look. The result was Old Hollywood meets spring fashion mixed with just a dash of romance.”

“Having the opportunity to shoot the cover of Cherry Creek Magazine is truly an honor. I love getting to work alongside the editors to help their vision come to life. We were inside a beautiful private garage with some of the most gorgeous luxury cars in the country. For this shot, we had the models sit inside a Porsche with a stunning red interior. I was perched on top of a 10 foot ladder shooting down. The angle was just right, and we nailed it within the first couple of shots.”

THIS SEASON’S TIERED TREND IS BROUGHT TO LIFE WITH THIS RICH, YELLOW TULLE GOWN AMONGST A VINTAGE PORSCHE CONVERTIBLE, AND IT IS JUST THE DECADENT DUO WE NEEDED TO CARRY US INTO SPRING. CHAD’S CLASSIC BLUE ZEGNA SUIT IS THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT AND IS AS TIMELESS AS IT IS ON-TREND.”

A NEW NORMAL, INDEED. While the neighborhood’s spring openings – along with realities we once subscribed to – are in fact delayed, we’ve rounded up the names you can expect to see dotting the Cherry Creek marquee come summer. Let’s take a virtual stroll through the future streets of 80206…
DESI GN STAR Cherry Creek North just upped its interior design ante with the entrée of Coda – a modern home furnishings showroom and retail space. Locally owned by Angela Feddersen of Elevate Architecture, it’s the sole Coda location outside of the brand’s original Malibu, California digs. Coda will feature accessibly priced furniture and accessories sold off the floor or for quick ship customization. These in-stock items and short turnaround times are uncommon in the industry and allow shoppers to finish their spaces without months of dreaded lead time. “Because we are aligned with the manufacturer, Coda Industries, we can quickly and affordably custombuild pieces from their factories in Los Angeles and Bali,” Feddersen explains. “Plus, their modern home furnishings stand out for their unrivaled artisan craftsmanship, vast customization options, and sustainable materials. Our clients don’t have to sacrifice quality for speed or affordability.” Catering to the residential and hospitality design trade, Coda offers a discount to design professionals, and the showroom is open to the public. M
Jonesing The suspense around Halcyon’s new restaurant has been building since Departure’s sudden, ahem, departure last spring. Now, the cat is out of the bag. Local Jones will showcase contemporary American cuisine with a locally-grown, sustainably sourced menu of light, approachable fare. The space promises to be comfortable and down-to-earth, a self proclaimed “local gathering spot where friends come together to trade stories and smiles over great food, great wine and great company.” Like its predecessor, Jones will offer bar, banquette and table seating alongside a chef-driven menu, yet the newer interpretation will be less au currant and more convivial. The name itself is taken from Denver founder, trader and notorious bon vivant Jack Jones. Together with his partner John Smith, Jones set up a trading post at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte Rivers in 1858. Their post quickly became the meeting place for locals looking to purchase goods, catch up on gossip, and have a good time. Local Jones hopes to follow suit. The restaurant will be open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

STAY C OOL Outdoor-loving Coloradoans have been familiar with the coveted Yeti brand for years. Soon, we will be able shop to our gear-loving hearts content at the brand’s new Cherry Creek North outpost. The Austin, Texas-based line of coolers, buckets, drinkware, chairs and outdoor apparel has built a cult-like following since launching in 2006 with fishermen, campers, hikers and tailgaters flocking to the well-made products. Today, Yeti boasts a smattering of retail locations nationwide (Chicago and Charleston stores have recently opened) and is considered the yardstick against which similar outdoor gear is measured. We love the original Tundra coolers ($249-$1,299), particularly in this season’s coral and aqua iterations. M

Eating WEll Healthy. Happy. Convenient. These notions sound better now than ever, and they’re the hallmarks of the newly opened Flower Child at Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Known for its colorful medley of vegan and vegetarian salads, bowls and wraps, the fast-casual Flower Child is the latest eatery from Fox Restaurant Concepts, whose other restaurants have included Cherry Creek staples North and True Food Kitchen. The hearty, seasonally-focused menu includes fan-favorites like the Vietnamese Crunch salad with savoy cabbage, romaine, quinoa, tomato, peppadew, pineapple, avocado, cashew, thai basil, cilantro, mint and a spicy lemongrass vinaigrette as well as wraps like The Rebel, made with grass fed steak, charred onion, port sault cheese, arugula and horseradish yogurt. Flower Child features a selection of signature lemonades and kombucha on tap, along with organic wines and local craft beers. Flower Child Cherry Creek is Colorado’s second location, with a sister store in Boulder. The dining room is bright and sunny, adorned in the brand’s signature, eclectic vibe and an 1,100 square-foot patio is sure to be a hit during the warmer months. Both will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, curbside delivery and takeout options are currently available. M

NI C OF TI ME Boston bred Nic + Zoe, a femalefounded line of casual women’s apparel, will open along Cherry Creek’s Third Avenue this summer. Known for its highquality knitwear, the brand (named for the owner’s two children) is beloved for its wearable clothing that’s comfortable yet tailored and intended to blend from one piece to the next, making it a wardrobe no-brainer. Lightweight cardigans, fitted jackets, pullovers and cropped pants make up the majority of the collection, where muted hues sit perfectly alongside bold prints. Also available through the likes of Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, the Denver location marks the label’s 11th brick and mortar storefront – most of which are peppered throughout the east coast. M

CHERRY HILLS COUNTRY CLUB If you find yourself with a tee time at Cherry Hills Country Club, it’s more likely than not that you’re slated for a pretty good day regardless of what you shoot. The ultra-private members-only haven in Colorado’s tony Cherry Hills Village has been a golfing privilege since 1922 when it was founded and designed by William Flynn. In fact, as the story goes, the club was created by a group of prominent members from nearby Denver Country Club who wanted a golf club and nothing else. Fast forward to today and the championship 18-hole course boasts a “guest” list that includes the footprints and scorecards of guys named Nelson, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods and Mickelson. John Ogden is in his 13th year as the club’s head golf pro, so we took to the fairways with the man who knows every inch of the course and asked him to break out every club in his bag as he answered our questions.
What’s the most important club in your bag? For me my driver is the most important club. If I drive the ball well, then I usually play pretty decently. I would love to say the putter, but that club and I have never had a great relationship.
What PGA golfer should the golf world keep an eye on? I would say Tiger Woods. The fact that he’s competitive again is great for the game of golf.
What’s the best hole at your course?
Best-dressed golfer past and present?
Cherry Hills has several famous and outstanding holes so I don’t think one stands out as the best. However, I do have my favorites and they seem to change periodically. For years, the Par 4 16th was my favorite hole on the course just because of the look and challenge of the hole and all of the history that has occurred on it. Recently, I have become partial to the Par 3 12th. This is as challenging a Par 3 as you will ever find. The hole requires a precise and well-struck tee shot over water to a challenging green that has a hogback/spine running through the middle of it.
Hands down Arnold Palmer. So much of his career was in black and white on television, but if you look at color photos of him in his prime, he was well dressed with a conservative and classy look. Today, it is always fun to see what Ian Poulter comes up with.
Favorite course you’ve ever played? I really enjoy playing Cherry Hills just as much as any other course. You simply never get tired of it. Every time, I learn something new. Other than Cherry Hills, I am enjoying George C. Thomasdesigned courses which include Riviera Country Club and Los Angeles Country Club. Outside of the United States, I love the Old Course at St. Andrews and Royal Dornoch.
What’s your favorite major and why? I enjoy them all. I just like watching the best players in the world compete on the biggest stages in the game.
What’s your favorite golf movie? Up until 10 years ago it was Caddyshack, but as I get older I never seem to turn off The Greatest Game Ever Played any time it is on television.

Course on your bucket list? Royal Country Down in Ireland.
Favorite golfer growing up? Favorite golfer now? Even though I grew up in Kansas City, which is the home of Tom Watson, I loved Jack Nicklaus. Tom was my second favorite but Jack was the man for me. Today, I don’t have a favorite, but I do enjoy watching Rory McIIroy because of how he strikes the ball. ARNOLD PALMER

CAROL FERGUSON | ELEMENT 79 Step into her Cherry Creek North boutique and immediately you’ll be captivated by Carol Ferguson’s electric charm and artistic sense of style. The self-taught metalsmith and jewelry designer has been creating eclectic, contemporary lines for two decades and loves crafting her own collections almost as much as curating the coveted mix of designers she carries at Element 79 – her storefront on Third Avenue. Here, we step behind the jewelry bench with the crimson-haired style maven to get her take on gemstones, cocktails, chicken sandwiches and the peaks of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc.
What inspires you as a designer?
Tell us a bit about your background in jewelry… I have been a metalsmith for about 19 years. I am mostly self taught having taken a number of workshops over the years given by master jewelers and goldsmiths and then honing those skills with hands-on experimentation. That’s what is fun about jewelry making. There are so many different techniques and, each time you add another skill, you open up new possibilities in your work. Before opening my contemporary jewelry boutique Element 79 (formerly Signet Jewelry), I did quite a lot of custom work in addition to creating and wholesaling cohesive jewelry lines.
Why did you start Signet and what made you open a location in Cherry Creek? I opened Signet when I saw that Cherry Creek was missing the type of well curated, contemporary designer jewelry store that most cities have. Boutiques like Twist in Portland or Love Adorned in New York and San Francisco or Broken English. Cherry Creek has plenty of high end traditional jewelry stores. The store I envisioned chooses smaller, hands-on contemporary designers who will work closely with us and our clients to create custom works or repurpose pieces. I wanted to create an environment that was comfortable and inviting for customers to explore and learn about the ancient and beautiful art of jewelry making. We’re a place where they could choose a piece to mark an important life event that was truly worthy of being a talisman for those special memories.
So many things, but mostly the material. I love the way precious metals are so malleable. You can make limitless forms with gold and silver. My favorite part is the final polish. Pieces go from an industrial looking form to a fluid, living, glowing object.
Items you are coveting for spring? Colored gemstone jewelry! Stacks of it in various hues but especially done with baguettes!
When you’re in Cherry Creek, what’s your favorite restaurant to grab dinner? My guilty pleasure is to go to Grind Kitchen + Watering Hole and order the fried chicken sandwich done Nashville style. It is amazing! You will have dreams about it.
What about a cocktail? Where and what’s your order? I am so boring – it’s always a Grey Hound… vodka and fresh grapefruit juice. Hillstone does a nice one.
Most beautiful place you’ve visited in Colorado? In the world? In Colorado I love the mountains in the summer. In the world it would be ChamonixMont-Blanc France. We skied off piste and passed beautiful blue glaciers!
How would you describe your personal style? Simple and elegant. I love lush fabrics and clean lines that provide a fabulous backdrop for jewelry! This has definitely changed over time - now that I am older I really admire timeless classics.
Most days, you can find me wearing…
My dream vacation is… I have always wanted to visit Greece. Santorini in particular. Not to ride a poor little donkey of course! The hillside villas and the water are so beautiful!

if there were bars on the windows or three different types of plaster that were in the dining room when we opened. It’s about the people inside. I wanted to share and educate what it takes to raise good food and the differences in flavor. It goes back to quality. I never wanted to be pretentious. I want people to come in shorts and flip flops if they’d like.” When he started, Seidel spent 90 hours a week in Fruition’s kitchen and it was all about the ingredients and a plate of food. Present day sees him focusing more on giving back to the community and ping ponging between Fruition and his other two restaurants, Mercantile Dining & Provision and Chook. Fortunately, Alex has Executive Chef Jon Lavelle on board, who ensures that Fruition remains one of the finest dining destinations in the state. “Jon is a rising star. He’s quiet. He’s focused. What I love about him is that he doesn’t have a typical chef’s ego. He’s in here early on his own working on dishes, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen that kind of enthusiasm. I’ve always stayed connected to the kitchen here, but I also want to create opportunities for young chefs to grow and be creative.”
ALEX SEIDEL & FRUITION “I THREW A GOOD PARTY BACK IN COLLEGE BECAUSE I ENJOYED SEEING PEOPLE HAVING A GOOD TIME. I’VE ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT HOSPITALITY AND TAKING CARE OF PEOPLE.” Just outside of Cherry Creek at 6th Avenue and N. Marion Street, the party is still going on at Alex Seidel’s signature restaurant, Fruition. For 13 years, the nationally renowned James Beard award-winning chef has been plating critically acclaimed dishes for neighborhood locals and discerning out-of-town diners alike with one simple concept in mind – comfort. “I wanted there to be approachable food at Fruition,” he begins. “There needed to be a reminder of what people knew and understood, so we opened with Chicken Noodle Soup and Pasta Carbonara. We focused on where the chicken came from and the technique put into the soup that made it the best possible. The pasta was home-made, technically driven but comforting in the same way.” Seidel wanted to open Fruition by paying respect to the ingredients and where they came from, however, when the Wisconsin native settled into Denver by way of California, there were some missing elements that needed tending to. “When I lived in California, I went to a farmers’ market almost every night of the week, and when I moved to Colorado it was tough to have that connection.” So, he created ways to bring in fresh ingredients, pushed his purveyors and then established the ultimate source in Larkspur Fruition Farms Creamery. It was Alex’s wife, Melissa, who came up with the name “Fruition.” Seidel explains, “The name comes from all the hard work that was being sunk into a small, little, tiny place where it didn’t matter

On Chef Lavelle’s watch, three dishes that have been on the Fruition menu since day one require his special attention. The aforementioned Carbonara includes pork belly, a six-minute egg, cavatelli and cacio pecora (cheese from Fruition Farms). The second stalwart is the Oysters Rockefeller which are potatowrapped with bacon, spinach, parmesan and leek. Finally, the Lemon Meringue Pie boasting a graham cracker crust and blueberry is everyone’s favorite dessert. While these items are the founding fathers on the menu, the masterpieces at your culinary disposal are endless and it’s just one facet of what continues to put a smile on Seidel’s face. “I wouldn’t be here at 9 am on a Friday morning after being in business since 2007 if it wasn’t a special place to continue to come to.” And, with that, the man who knows how to throw a party reviews the upcoming night’s list of guests. Another full house. M

What’s the oddest drink order you’ve ever received?
Someone asked me to blend a whole raw egg into their frozen daiquiri.
Talk about the art that goes into a beautiful and delicious cocktail. I think it starts with seasonal and local ingredients and then it’s all about balance. For spring, I like strawberries, blueberries and raspberries coupled with herbs like basil.
Where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration through collaboration and seeing what other bartenders are coming up with.
How is the bar at Narrative different and special from the rest? I like the way that our team expertly balances a high-paced, high-energy vibe with these incredible hand-crafted, seasonal cocktails along with a wine list that is aimed at pleasing all palates.
What are some spring seasonal cocktails that you recommend?
NARRATIVE AT THE JACQUARD
My go-to’s for spring are a Negroni (gin, Campari, sweet vermouth – all equal parts – with an orange twist served on a big rock (ice), and a Mint Julip (bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint).

The hotel bar scene was some kind of electric – a celebratory soundtrack of intermittent laughter, martini shakers, smooth jazz, a muted NBA game on tv and candid conversation. The Jacquard Hotel emits an aura of respite and relaxation, not only to its out-of-town guests, but to its neighborhood patrons as well. Behind the bar at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Narrative, an indispensable orchestrator to the allure of any visit is Andrew Stevens. We sat down with the barkeep to talk all things cocktails at this happening watering hole in the heart of Cherry Creek. For the locals of Cherry Creek, what intel can you share about the best way to enjoy their neighborhood bar? As a hotel bar, it’s pretty unpredictable as to how busy we’re going to be and when. I would suggest that locals come visit us Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and sit in front of the wells in the middle of either side of the bar. You’ll see most of the action and most of the cocktails going out from there.
Is there one drink in particular that you love to make? It may sound weird to some, but I like to make whiskey sours. Even though they might be time consuming, I really enjoy a good egg white cocktail (choice of whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup and an egg white). I think a whiskey sour looks so beautiful with froth, served in a coupe or a martini glass.
Is there a cocktail with an interesting background or story to it that you like? The Corpse Reviver #2 is a classic. It’s a gin cocktail with Lillet, Cointraeu, lemon juice and an Absinthe rinse with a lot of different flavors competing for your attention. It’s very strong, and very potent flavor-wise while being recognized as an incredible hangover cure.
What’s the most interesting or funny comment that you’ve overheard from guests at the bar? I’m not sure that it’s appropriate to repeat, but let’s just say that people talk about very private things at bars.

Ford brings back an icon. Aston Martin delivers its first ever SUV. And supercars from Lamborghini and Ferrari drop the jaw just a little bit further. Join us as we slide behind the wheel and check the rearview before putting the pedal to the metal in four of the year’s most unforgettable new rides.
01
WHO: Ford WHAT: Bronco WHEN: 2020 HOW: Starting around $30,000
The automotive industry is a lot like the movie industry - why risk investing in a brand new product when you can revive a storied marque? First, Toyota revived the FJ and Supra. Then Chevrolet recreated the Camaro, and the Dodge Challenger and Charger have both been runaway successes since their return. So, why wouldn’t the folks at the blue oval, who reignited the passion of the Ford GT, take a shot with another classic – the Ford Bronco? In 2020, the Ford Bronco returns to the U.S. where it was a mainstay of the SUV market. From its classic 70’s box-on-frame design to its rugged stance, it comes back on a Ranger platform where auto aficionados have seen limitless, speculative renderings across the internet for years. Ford knows they must pay off the public’s desire with an off-road capable SUV. From the short overhangs and overall design in the camouflaged prototypes, they may just appease those desires. From what’s been rumored, the all-new Bronco will get a version of Ford’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four found in its Ranger brother. The Ranger’s powertrain employs a 10-speed automatic, which puts out 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. I would venture to assume the base Bronco will match that output. But, as the future of industry looks to alternativefuel powertrains, Ford will most likely look to put an all-electric version into the Bronco lineup in quick fashion. And if sales hit the mark early, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ford’s performance team pursues a Raptor-like variant for the hardcore off-roader.
02
WHO: Lamborghini WHAT: Huracán EVO Spyder WHEN: 2020 HOW: Starting at $287,400
The Italians never disappoint when it comes to design and horsepower in a supercar. Lamborghini keeps the theme going no matter the product. Their vehicles are rare, high priced and usually manifest themselves into multiple variants. This time the entry level bull, the Huracán, receives the full treatment from Sant’Agata with all-wheel drive and the roof missing. This is the Huracán EVO Spyder. As long as Lamborghini finds unique model variations, the market will gladly oblige to consume them. This EVO Spyder falls right into the wheelhouse of any driver who wants power, performance and wind blown hair. If you want to impress the Jones, this might do it with a 5.2-liter V10, naturally aspirated engine. The rearmounted engine puts out 630 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque found in the Huracán Performante. Lamborghini even put rear-wheel steering and torque vectoring to assist in making the most of the power and handling. Supercar expert Peter Vinnicombe has explained, “Exotics should be about theater. They should be unreasonable, brash and emotional. With the Huracán Evo Spyder, Lamborghini delivers on this in spades.”
THE ITALIANS NEVER DISAPPOINT WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN AND HORSEPOWER IN A SUPERCAR

WHO: Aston Martin WHAT: DBX WHEN: 2020 HOW: Starting at $200,000
The last decade has seen almost every European luxury brand develop a formula - create a (relatively) massproduced SUV to generate sales and increase R&D for their more extreme offerings. Once Porsche’s Cayenne cracked the equation without watering down the performance brand’s stalwart reputation, the flood gates opened. Leave it to Aston Martin to join the, “Them Too?” crowd as they bring an SUV to help exceed their roughly 4,000 units per year. Aston Martin will be revealing their SUV, the new DBX, this fall with their standard engine partner, MercedesBenz. This time they selected the Mercedes-AMGsourced 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, and an even larger power plant will be available with Aston Martin’s own 5.2-liter V12 which will be equipped with a pair of turbos. The images across the internet are distinctly Aston Martin in fascia and design language, allowing it to easily fill a spot in their product offering. This all-new SUV is being built at Aston Martin Lagonda’s St. Athan facility. The folks at Aston Martin have called it, “a state-of-the-art luxury manufacturing plant that will ultimately become the ‘Home of Electrification’ when the marque’s fully-EV models enter production.” Connecting the dots, an all-EV DBX cannot be far from appearing in the lineup.

AS EXPECTED, THE TRUE BEAUTY OF A FERRARI IS THE STALLION UNDER THE HOOD
WHO: Ferrari WHAT: F8 Tributo WHEN: 2020 HOW: Starting at $276,550
The Ferrari F8 Tributo is the Cavallino’s replacement for the aging 488 GTB. This mid-rear-engine sports car has unique characteristics and is an homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history, the F40. Created using Ferrari’s next-generation design language, you notice the massive opening in the front hood referred to as a “S-duct,” which moves the air from the front splitter and provides additional downforce on the front of the car. It even pays homage to the F40 with the louvers built into the rear window allowing hot air to be pulled away from the engine bay. As with most Ferrari launches, the interest is high and the excitement for the next V8 is at fever pitch. The F8 Tributo’s largest departure from the 488 GTB comes in the form of its interior. The Tributo’s interior is a complete redesign from the 488, with a new driver-focused dashboard. Lest Ferrari forget about the passenger, an all-new 7.0-inch touchscreen faces the passenger. As expected, the true beauty of a Ferrari is the stallion under the hood. The F8’s 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 is found in the outgoing 488. Yet, this version will produce 710 horsepower topping out at 211 mph; the same as the limitedly produced 488 Pista. Ferrari says the V8 will generate 0-60 times under 3.0 seconds and an eye popping 0-124mph in 7.8 seconds.

In a market rich with realtors, Ann Kerr stands out from the pack. And while her sales record speaks for itself, (Ann is recognized as one of Denver’s top producers and has been named to the Who’s Who of Luxury Real Estate) she’s anything but a salesperson, believing instead in the power of relationships. “I’m not very good at ‘selling’ per se – my view on brokerage is that my role is to help my client make the best buying or selling decision relying on my expertise, which may or may not result in a sale in the short term,” the long time Cherry Hills Village resident reveals. “I’m in it for the long haul and as a friend and neighbor to many of my clients, I value these personal relationships.” Indeed, her more than twenty-year tenure in the industry reflects the type of staying power that can only be achieved through honesty, integrity and unrelenting authenticity.
What’s more, when you hire Ann, you get Ann. “I answer phone calls and emails directly. It’s extremely important to me that I take responsibility for knowing every detail of every transaction,” she attests. A notion that may seem simple, but in a thriving market such as Denver’s, one that is far too often not the case. “There are so many ‘experts’ in the media providing misleading information which cannot be universally applied across the board to every home sale,” she explains. “A broker who has experience in your area and has been selling real estate through many market cycles can give the best advice on selling your home to the right buyer for the right price.” It’s this type of honesty and expertise that has made Ann not only a real estate leader, but a community leader as well. In fact, she has served on countless boards and committees including the Cherry Hills Village Planning and Zoning Commission, The John Lynch Foundation, University of Oklahoma Alumni Association, Swim Across America, the Cherry Hills Village Elementary School Accountability Committee, PIVOT, the Colorado Lacrosse Foundation, US Lacrosse and the University of Denver Lacrosse, and the Denver Ballet Guild.
I’m in it for the long haul and as a friend and neighbor to many of my clients, I value these personal relationships. Ann most definitely walks the walk, enlisting a wide variety of tools and programs for both buyers and sellers. “No two clients and no two homes are alike. I like to approach each listing from a fresh perspective, engaging my wide network of contacts and a wide variety of strategies – whether it’s a wine tasting event at a new listing or an article in a local publication – to sell a home.” This creativity, coupled with tried-and-true knowledge and a stellar reputation, serves her clients extremely well. “To be successful in any kind of real estate market, you must start with the needs of your clients, always be committed to those needs and utilize your experience to the maximum,” she finishes.

hen it came time for one of the city’s leading design/build duos to craft a custom home of their own, the ultimate dream project unfurled. Having built residences in the area for more than 20 years, the husband-wife team behind Nicholas Custom Homes knew what they wanted in a place to call their own and they knew exactly where they wanted it – the charming streets of Cherry Creek North. Thus, the pair embarked on the journey of building their dream home, a stunning townhouse at 538 St. Paul Street that is as timeless as it is on-trend. “We were inspired by classic, timeless architecture,” the homeowner explains. “We felt like there were too many modern style homes in Cherry Creek and really wanted to deviate from that.” The end result is a stately, traditional brick beauty that spans three floors and more than 5,000 square-feet. In fact, the home offers more than eight feet of width over standard townhouses, allowing for a coveted three-car-garage and a spacious, single-family feeling. What’s more, the home boasts a private elevator that easily transports the homeowners to the rooftop deck, where sweeping views abound.

Inside, the home is replete with custom-curated designer finishes, making it stand out from the pack. While indeed traditional, the space is decidedly au currant with a graceful, open floor plan and bright, airy appointments that range from light oak floors to contemporary millwork, wrought iron window casings and satin brass light fixtures. “The clean design is bright and timeless, with a modern, open concept perfect for large crowds or for a quiet evening with family,” the homeowner attests. Perhaps the star of the home’s design plan is the dramatic two-story living room and its floor to ceiling windows. The gallery-like space allows for plenty of natural light and is complemented by blue and white Chinoiserie fabrics and pottery – a pattern and palette that have been the designer’s favorite since childhood. Throughout the home, colorful contemporary art fills the walls in perfect fashion – each piece bringing its respective room to life. It’s a collection that is remarkably curated and one that the homeowners have built throughout a lifetime of travels. “From the finishes, to the furnishings, to the art, we worked to achieve a minimalist style combined with traditional designs that bring both warmth and edginess to the home.”
538 Saint Paul Street is listed on the market for $2,655,000 by broker Dawn Raymond.
At Top: A spacious chef’s kitchen is traditional with a twist – tumbled white subway tiles are installed in a herringbone pattern over the range, while clean white quartz countertops are the perfect complement to the contemporary brass light fixtures. At Left: The homeowner, who is also a designer, believes that every powder room should have a bold “wow factor.” Here, floor to ceiling tiles in a black geometric pattern are playful and on point. Bottom Left: The well-appointed master bathroom is clean, light and bright making it the perfect place to begin each day. Above: A spacious rooftop patio offers both privacy and unparalleled views.

Wallpaper is such a great way to transform a room - whether it is an accent wall or the entire space. In particular, I am seeing buyers gravitate to patterns and textures that have a modern art feel.
Wall tiles add personality and punch to any room! From a kitchen backsplash to a shower wall or even a living room accent, tile with texture and dimension adds an incredibly artistic vibe that feels special and truly custom.
Custom light fixtures can add impact and personality to a home without affecting resale – they’re easily switched out if needed. I love lighting that has just a bit of quirk and whimsy like these palm chandeliers by Paul Ferrante.

shared passion for seeing the world is what first drew Erica and Steve to one another. Avid skiers, runners, hikers and scuba divers, the pair’s sense of adventure was always undeniable. Eventually, so was their love for one another. Having met through mutual friends, the duo quickly established a courtship, together journeying to the reaches of Greece, Italy, Germany, Belize and British Columbia. Yet on Christmas of 2018, Steve, a Denver-based attorney, had a journey of a different kind planned for Erica, who works for her family’s manufacturing company. As they gathered to open gifts, he presented her with one last gesture – a pair of ski goggles. Inside the package was another much smaller box containing an engagement ring. A shocked Erica gladly accepted the proposal as Steve fell to one knee and asked her to spend forever with him. The following year, the couple said their “I dos” in Denver against the jaw dropping backdrop of the highly ornamented Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Cathedral. “We knew we wanted our wedding at the Cathedral,” Erica remarks. “It is so bold and stunning. When you walk in, you cannot help but be moved.” The bride donned an exquisite lace gown by designer Hayley Paige and show stopping stilettos from Christian Louboutin. Around her wrist was

a simple gold bangle – the first piece of jewelry given to Erica’s mother from her father some 40 years earlier, which served as the bride’s “something borrowed.” Also with Erica for her walk down the aisle was an incredibly sentimental “something old.” “My great-grandmother wrote a letter on my first birthday in 1985 for me to read on my wedding day,” she explains. “She enclosed the letter in a box with a handkerchief that she wanted me to carry as well as a Catholic Patron Saint medal to provide protection. I was so excited to finally get to read the letter and open this mysterious box from my late great-grandmother.” Afterwards, Erica, Steve and their 155 guests took to The Halcyon in Cherry Creek North where they celebrated in the grandest of fashions. The perfect balance of comfort and modernity, Erica and Steve knew the contemporary hotel was the ideal locale for their reception the moment they entered. From their first look on the art-laden rooftop to their first dance in the sleek ballroom, The Halcyon offered the pair a colorful setting to host their big day. After dining on delectable fare and dancing the night away, Erica and Steve escaped to Palm Springs for a “mini moon” before returning to Denver to spend their first holiday season as man and wife.

hen Brittany, a well-known lifestyle blogger, learned that she was expecting a baby girl, visions of flowers and frills raced through her mind. A lover of all things feminine and beautiful, Brittany was inspired by English gardens from the beginning of her pregnancy. “I felt especially drawn to flowers while I was expecting,” she explains. “I would spend hours walking around nurseries and greenhouses.” When it came time to plan her baby shower, the most befitting choice for a venue were the stunning grounds of the Denver Botanic Gardens. In fact, baby-to-be’s name – Georgina – even translates to “gardener.” “We wanted my baby shower to be a celebration of femininity and the bond between mothers and daughters,” Brittany recalls. “From my grandmothers to my mother, aunt, friends and sorority sisters, I have been lucky to witness the powerful link between women who love and support one another. This baby shower was Georgina’s induction into our little tribe!” As guests approached the conservatory, they were given a “Wishes For Baby” card and invited to sign the baby’s Peter

Rabbit book – an activity that served as an ice breaker as guests mingled. “Looking back through these handwritten cards was so sentimental for me; I’ve saved them and will make a little scrapbook out of them for the baby,” Brittany says. The book, in particular, would find its perfect place in Georgina’s – affectionately nicknamed “Bunny” – nursery. Nods to Beatrix Potter were seen throughout the shower, including Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck centerpiece adornments. In lieu of traditional baby shower games, guests partook in a flower arranging class hosted by longtime Denver staple, Newberry Brothers. After creating their masterpieces, each guest was able to take her bouquet home as a party favor. All the while, the tiniest partygoers engaged in an activity all their own – beaded necklace and bracelet making. What’s more, each guest left with pearl mommy-and-me bracelets handmade by Brittany’s own mother. “It really was a celebration of women and it felt so special to have that energy around me that day.”

GRAND CAYMAN Exploring the Caribbean Jewel that is Grand Cayman WORDS BY KEV IN M A RR

heels up at DIA unleashed a breathtaking Colorado canvas enveloped in snow white on this early morning in March. This unfiltered masterpiece masked a frigid air that was consuming Denver at a clip of 19 degrees, not to mention the unwanted rudeness of an accompanying wind that chilled matters even further. Color everyone giddy onboard this flight, and not the least bit guilt-ridden for escaping this Rocky Mountain freeze. In a few hours, a new kingdom will play host to all that ails. A direct hop from Denver full of sun, sand, sea sparkle and serenity.

Two beautiful words that will reside with you forever: Grand Cayman. Any time you wake up to Seven Mile Beach, you should count your blessings. Grand Cayman’s world renowned stretch of sand and mesmerizing blue waters are a constant occupant on acclaimed travel lists as one of the top beaches on the planet. In this case, beauty isn’t just skin deep because underneath lies a magical world that had me absolutely speechless, while stamping me with an indelible grin from ear-to-ear. Snorkeling that morning was life changing. The mode of transportation was equally invigorating – gliding across the Caribbean Sea on a wave runner, full throttle, going 50 miles per hour. One
reason for the speed was to keep up with my guide, Melvin, a Nicaraguan gent with a penchant for circus tricks on his water sled that made me wonder if his calling wasn’t with the X Games. I myself was trying to stay close while, more importantly, looking to avoid an L3/L4 spinal issue off the coast of this island Shangri-La. Upon arrival to our intended spot, Melvin was off the wave runner and, following a quick splash, had transformed into a mermaid. To watch him dance with the fish was something out of a Disney movie. The morning light illuminated the shallow sea floor to such a mythical degree, that it felt like an out-of-body animated encounter. Colors popped from glowing coral and schools of fish, from blue and orange to
Chicken, lamb, duck, Angus Beef cuts and hand-made pasta also highlight the experience. For me, it was like choosing one donut. So I didn’t. I went for a dozen.

We dove into the spring rolls with goat cheese, corn, mushroom, baby spinach and plum sauce. A thorough investigation was done of Pork Two Ways – pulled baby back ribs and braised pork belly – which were guava marinated with ginger apple chutney, crackling and Vindaloo sauce. The dish was nothing short of amazing. Lobster ravioli with boursin cheese, truffle oil and pumpkin chorizo sauce seduced us into a third Cayman Lemonade – Ketel One, light rum, peach tree, fresh lime juice and cranberry juice. All the while, nan flatbread stuffed with black forest ham or roasted garlic or pepper jack cheese with dipping options like mango chutney, jalapeno or plum sauce had us ordering seconds and thirds. There is zero possibility of us having a better meal than what went down at Blue Cilantro. And the wine list was an all-star. Sleep was a lay-up that evening.
yellow and purple. A nurse shark kept close to the floor while a 20-pound barracuda, thankfully minding its own business, passed through on its way to another party. Yellow tail and blue runner made casual appearances as well. Had the trip ended there, I would have considered the experience a privilege. However, brunch at Luca was calling.
So many scrumptious flavors and pairings that leave you wanting another seating as soon as humanly possible.
Located at the posh Caribbean Club on Seven Mile Beach, this Cayman dream just kept getting better. Luca is one of those restaurants that, for brunch, if they’re not featuring it then the food item simply doesn’t exist. So many options, so little time. Regardless, my eggs benedict, fresh fruit, scalloped potatoes, bacon, side salad and mini croissants all paired famously with a few glasses of Prosecco. After a mid-day feast like that, a strategically planned 80-minute massage back at Westin Grand Cayman’s Hibiscus Spa seemed apropos. The treatment was unforgettable as well as timely, having acquired a bit of soreness from screaming across the water at what seemed like Mach 10 speeds earlier that morning. With time to kill before dinner, a self-guided tour of the Westin property was in order. A sparkling pool with a swim-up bar served as the obvious centerpiece, flanked by hot tubs, dining and relaxation areas before touching the sand with cabanas and lounges that flirt with the Caribbean Sea. You also have the heartbeat for all water activities with Red Sail Sports, whose organized and engaging staff set up everything from wave runners, stand up paddle boards and snorkeling to scuba diving, boat tours and fishing. Dinner at Blue Cilantro ended up being a meal that still ranks as one of the stellar eating experiences that we’ve had anywhere, and a return to Grand Cayman would warrant a return to the restaurant “where East and West unite in taste.” That’s because Chef Vidyadhara Shetty, originally from Mumbai, India, has created so many scrumptious flavors and pairings that leave you wanting another seating as soon as humanly possible. Imagine every possible fish, fresh from that day, accompanied by the most incredible sauces you may or may not have ever conceived possible.

time and we ended up closing the place. That’s probably the best compliment that you could give a restaurant. It felt like home, but with much better food. I’m the guy who gets a grilled cheese for an appetizer with soft brie, white truffle and local guava jam before my New York Strip comes in with guns blazing and a remarkable poached egg and carrot top salsa verde on top. It was another unbelievable meal from the award-winning Chef Dean Max, who’s also an author and Food Network veteran. With links to the finest local growers, their own kitchen garden, and their very own deep sea fishing boat that keeps things fresh every day, it’s a must-visit in George Town.

Time for some shopping? You bet. And Camana Bay is your destination. High end retailers, bars and restaurants comprise this gorgeous waterfront entertainment district. The neighborhood also features townhomes, condos and duplexes for when you fall in love with the island and might want a place of your own. Camana Bay also puts you in touch with Agua, a fantastic seafood restaurant rooted in Italian tradition and inspired by Peruvian cuisine, showcasing the kind of menu that requires multiple visits to try everything that caught my eye. We feasted on Thai ceviche with the fresh catch of the day, chili, coconut lemon grass, cilantro crispy calamari and plantains as well as the burrata with soft cow’s milk cheese, marinated tomato, balsamic, basil and grilled bread. Then it was time for pappardelle, made in-house, with lamb Bolognese and ricotta salata. A fusilli and cheese gratin with herbed bread crumbs was their incredible version of a mac and cheese that went superbly with our pinot noir.

Sightseeing is highly encouraged on an island that is just 76 square miles - 22 miles long and an average of four miles wide. Whether it’s an exhibition to the region’s famous Crystal Caves, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park or adjacent Blue Iguana Habitat, there’s no shortage of local cultural attractions.
I sure didn’t leave Grand Cayman hungry. And I returned to Denver with a tan that was the envy of my friends in the Colorado winter.
Denver flies directly into Grand Cayman several times weekly via Cayman Airways. Total in flight time is 4 hours, 30 minutes.

Curbside pick up, to-go, delivery, delivery apps, shipping, video chats, tele-consults. It’s a whole new landscape - one that none of us knows quite how to navigate. From the who to the how, we’re guiding you through the nuts and bolts of supporting Cherry Creek’s small businesses in the face of COVID-19.
REVAMP YOUR WARDROBE You’ve been intending to clean out your closet for ages but typically, life moves far too fast. There’s no better time to ditch the duds you rarely wear and revamp your wardrobe with classic, quality pieces. After all, who doesn’t get a spring in their step from a new, perfect-fitting ensemble? While at present you cannot visit these shops in person, they’d be glad to set up a video conference or phone call to assess your style and needs. From there, the options are plentiful. These locally owned, well-curated boutiques will hand select options for you and ship or deliver goods directly to your home. Something doesn’t fit? Prefer another color? Most retailers are loosening their return and exchange policies to better accommodate virtual shopping (although we strongly suggest you check with each retailer individually). Plus, many of Cherry Creek’s small businesses have online storefronts or shoppable social media accounts that allow you to indulge in retail therapy from the comforts of home.

Denver Darling When pals Molly Fortune and Abby Perlmutter Miller decided to expand Miller’s popular blog into a Cherry Creek boutique four years ago, they did so with a vision of offering shoppers a taste of the vibrant and accessible style for which Denver Darling had quickly become known. Today, the store plays host to plenty of darling brands – think Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James label, Love Token blazers and dresses from Lucy Paris. Denver Darling’s well-stocked online storefront will provide you with plenty of eye candy and we dare you not to “add to cart” on at least a handful of items. We nabbed a colorful spring scarf for $30, an adorable pair of white tassel earrings and a tie-dye dress ideal for going nowhere at all.
01.
Go item by item – don’t just skim through your wardrobe.
02.
Ask yourself, “Do I love it? Does it bring me joy?” Can’t remember? Try it on! And if the answer is no, toss it.
03.
Do any of my items need to be repaired? If so, set them aside to be properly fixed.
04.
How are my shoes? Which ones can be tossed and which can go to the cobbler?
05.
Do all of my items fit correctly? If not, can they be tailored?
06.
Do not be afraid to purge. You’ll find new favorites in no time.
07.
Once you’re done with 1-6, it’s time to organize.
08.
Ensure that your closet flows. Think colors, lifestyle, and seasons.
09.
Make your frequently worn items easily accessible.
10.
Love your closet! We want you to feel great every time you walk into it.

ADDING SOME ZEST TO YOUR ZOOM CALL It’s a whole new world out there and for professionals, that means a pause on in-person meetings and the emergence of the ever-popular Zoom call. These virtual meet ups with co-workers allow us to maintain workplace synergies despite being socially distant. Yet they’re both a blessing and a curse, stylistically speaking. The good news? Tailored slacks, form-fitting jeans and dressy skirts are not required. Throw on those quarantine cozy-leggings and call it a day – your colleagues will never know. Yet they will notice your top and accessories, so give those some thought. If it’s cool enough, a cashmere or knit turtleneck is perfect as it offers a solid, seamless look that hides flaws and is not distracting. For the ladies, add in a great pair of statement earrings or even simple studs to appear a bit more polished. If it’s warm out, opt for a simple pullover top – a dressed up t-shirt in a solid color with a bright scarf or wellmade cardigan is ideal. Button downs can drape sloppily and bold prints are a lot for a video screen to handle. Avoid them if you can.

From thank-yous to pick-me-ups, there’s never been a moment like now to send a loved one a thoughtful gift. What’s more, many of us have extra time on our hands, meaning that a head start on the shopping we had already planned (think Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day) is most certainly in the cards. Your neighborhood businesses need your patronage now more than ever, and imagine how great it will feel to have everything ready and wrapped by June. You’ll avoid the crowds come December and will have time to actually enjoy your friends and family throughout the holiday season – something that will be more meaningful this year than ever before.

No Money, No Problem The economic impact of COVID-19 means that for some, spending money in the short term simply isn’t a reality. Yet there are still myriad ways to help Cherry Creek’s small businesses, sans cash.
01. Follow on Social Media Now is a perfect time to show small businesses some love on the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Following your favorite local business helps them expand their reach.
02. Leave a Review Online reviews are the backbone of a small business’ marketing program. Leave kind words on Google, Yelp, Facebook or Nextdoor.
03. Sign up for an Email List Leave your info so that you can be contacted with specials and news once their doors are back open.
04. Recommend to a Friend There’s no better marketing than word of mouth. If you love a local business’ goods and services, tell your friends!
05. Send a Note Kind words of thanks and encouragement go far. Shoot your favorite small business an email or handwritten note letting them know you’re thinking of them.
06. Make a Wish List or Registry Just because shopping isn’t in the cards right now doesn’t mean there are not birthdays and holidays to be had. Give your loved ones the gift of knowing what you really want by creating a personal registry. Getting married? Even more apropos! Some Cherry Creek businesses (like White Peacock) offer them directly, or try sites like myregistry.com, giftster. com or zola.com, all of whom allow you to add gifts from any store or site imaginable. Fill yours with local picks!
HW Home A Colorado company with a 30-year history, HW Home is known for its well-edited selection of furnishings, accessories and gifts that are as pretty as they are practical. Homebody is the exclusive Denver destination for Fermob, a line of old-school, colorful French outdoor furniture that will give your patio all the punch it needs this summer. Shop via phone or through Homebody’s Instagram page.
You’re spending more time at home than ever and, chances are, those little things that were always on the “future project” list are rearing their outdated heads. Give your space some love with a minimakeover. While we don’t recommend undergoing a heavy remodel at the moment, sprucing things up may be just what your soul needs. Change out your sofa pillows, order a new accent chair, give that room some color with a gorgeous rug or add some new art to your walls. With much of the world temporarily shifting to a workfrom-home structure, having a dedicated, functional office space is mission-critical. In fact, studies have proven time and again that our surroundings greatly impact both creativity and productivity. We sat down with the gals from Carla’s, A Classic Design, to get their tips for cultivating the perfect #wfh zone. Here’s what the designers – known for their colorful residential projects throughout Cherry Creek – had to say…
01. Create Boundaries First things first. Your office space needs to be a dedicated space in your home. No working from the sofa or bed! If you do not have a specific room you can use, find an under-utilized corner or section and “zone it off” using strategic furniture placement.
02. Comfort is Key Simply put, if you’re not comfortable, you’re not functional. Having a proper desk at the right height and a comfortable chair are the first steps in creating a home office. Yet you don’t need to sacrifice functionality for beauty – your office furniture can and should serve both purposes. Think outside the box and look at chairs that could double as an accent or even dining chair later on. We love upholstered options!
Ring 303.320.6363 Web shaver-ramsey.com Social @shaver_ramsey
03. Lighting is Crucial Having proper lighting in your office is extremely important. We prefer to forgo overhead lighting that cannot be controlled – it is almost always too bright or too dim – and instead opt for several lamps allowing us to create the perfect combination. Try a desk lamp mixed with floor or accent lamps elsewhere in your space. And wherever possible, incorporate natural light!
04. Use the 60-30-10 Rule If you take a look at rooms in magazines or in a designer’s portfolio, you’ll notice that the rooms you like the most are almost divided into these percentages of 60-30-10 – meaning 60 percent of a dominant color, 30 percent of a secondary color and 10 percent of an accent color. Why this works is anybody’s guess. Perhaps it is the human tendency to see an overall theme in the 60 percent hue, unifying the coloration. The 30 percent provides visual interest and the 10 percent, not unlike jewelry, provides that little spark of sparkle.
Reclaimed. Repurposed. Recycled. That’s the mantra at Revampt, the modern design and décor store locally owned by Daniel Louis. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Cherry Creek shopkeeping is in his blood – his father Clif helms The Vineyard and his mom, Rosella, was the proprietress of The Brass Bed for many years before passing the torch to his sister Molly and wife, Olivia. Step inside Revampt (virtually, of course) and the attention to detail and eclectic mix is ever-apparent. From colorful glasses crafted from recycled Absolut bottles, to live edge walnut dining tables and lamps fashioned from vintage toy airplanes, the wares all ooze personality and purpose. Head online and pick up one of Louis’ “Quarantine Kits” – inside you’ll find goodies like whipped Colorado honey and locally-poured soy wax candles. Ring 303.394.9222 Web hwhome.com Social @hwhome

“In a business where people are overpromising, I’m never going to win the beauty contest. If it’s a bikini contest, then I lose every time. There has to be a talent portion to this competition.” There’s an abundance of beauty to what Peter Schaffer brings to his NFL clients, it’s just not exhibited in a bikini contest. And that’s more than all right. The Cherry Creek resident and accomplished sports agent of over 30 years has negotiated over $1 billion in contracts, while making eight NFL players the highest paid at their positions and he’s been recognized as one of Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal’s “Top 10 Agents in the NFL.” His clientele includes Hall of Famers like Barry Sanders, Jerome Bettis and Willie Roaf, as well as former Cleveland Brown Joe Thomas, who is undoubtedly a first ballot inductee three years from now. Oh, and he just helped his dear friend and client, Denver Bronco legend Steve Atwater, get into Canton this coming August. The New York native has come a long way since breaking into the business three decades ago. “Back when I started, I had to work extremely hard when I didn’t have a track record or a client list to show players that I’d work zealously and be there 24/7 for them,” Schaffer says while easing back into his black leather chair at his Cherry Creek office. “After 30 years, I still work just as hard and haven’t changed my work ethic. I still feel like it’s 1988.”
Schaffer landed in Colorado after law school when his plans to become a litigator attracted one of the most prestigious law firms in Denver. However, his fascination with sports and its players and statistics prompted him to branch out and take a risk on a venture that he couldn’t resist. In doing so, a brand new world was unveiled to the then 24-year old, “We used my legal experience and background to generate revenue for the sports management company. I did every type of law necessary to fund the project including DUIs, personal injury cases and insurance defense cases.” Owner and President of Authentic Athletix, Schaffer feels this was all predetermined due to his lot in life. “Just about every sports team I played on, including college lacrosse and professional lacrosse with the Denver Rifles, I was the captain on the team. I am also a middle child who, traditionally, is a fixer, a negotiator and someone who brings everyone together. I enjoy bringing worlds together to make people better,” he concedes. In order to bring these worlds together, Schaffer puts his head down and never stops working. While Hollywood will have you believe that being a sports agent is all about popping champagne, yacht life, Ferraris and night clubs, the reality is that the job isn’t nearly as sexy and glamourous as one might imagine. Ninety-five percent of the profession requires constant work in developing relationships with players and their families, while also helping clients through situations with workouts, life issues, career issues, recruiting and negotiations. Another unseen element of the job concerns weighing and balancing a player’s health when injuries occur. When that happens, immediate communication is required with the team and, if possible, the player. “The toughest thing for an agent is that we have to help make medical decisions on behalf of clients anywhere from 500 to 1,500 miles away,” Schaffer explains. “Most teams know that, if you have one of my players, then the doctor is going to be on the phone with me and we’re going to work through the issue of what’s best and make the best decision for the player, both for the short term and the long term.”
The toughest thing for an agent is that we have to help make medical decisions on behalf of clients anywhere from 500 to 1,500 miles away.
any time to enjoy his Cherry Creek surroundings? There are, in fact, a few local haunts that he relishes, including North Italia and their chicken parm; a burger and onion rings at The Cherry Cricket, and a certain watering hole that used to be his other office. “My home away from home used to be The Campus Lounge. I’d take all of my appointments there. I had just about every meeting in the world there. It was my “Cheers.” It was an emotional time when it shut down, but now’s it’s open again so I might find my way back there.
Perhaps the facets most closely associated with sports business, portrayed through the likes of the Tom Cruise film Jerry Maguire and HBO’s Ballers, are the misleading and questionable tactics that some agents resort to in securing clients. It’s a heightened sense of competition that Schaffer continues to witness. “When I first started back in 1988, the competition was intense, and it’s gotten worse every year,” he says matter-of-factly. “You’ve got 1,000 agents competing for 250 drafted players each season and a total of 2,000 players in the NFL every year. I don’t mind the competition - it’s part of life and it’s the ultimate form of capitalism. It’s our job to educate players and get them to decide based on the right criteria, but right now there are a lot of agents who are competing by offering huge inducements to sign like cash, gold, jewelry and promises that they’ll never be able to keep. I can’t represent every player and I’m not right for every player, but I truly believe that the players I do represent get the best agent for their needs.” So how does Schaffer go about pitching a prospect to join him at Authentic Athletix? Without an ounce of hesitation, he engages, “If you’re looking for easy then I’m not your guy because we’re not looking for easy over here. There’s no easy way to succeed in the NFL. If you want to outwork people, then you need to be the first one in the building and the last one to leave and we’ll get along well. If you’re going to look for easy then I’ll give you a list of other agents to call.” A lot of sports agents settle down in the glitzy likes of Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and Miami. So why is Schaffer calling Denver, specifically Cherry Creek, home? “The weather is great and sunny just about every day. The people are nice. It’s not that congested. It’s a place that my wife and I think the world of and, having to travel coast to coast, Denver is relatively in the middle of the country, which helps a great deal. When he’s not on a plane, in a hotel, holed up in his office, or at any number of given events across the nation, does Peter have
He’s not your stereotypical brash, flashy and egotistical agent. Schaffer is a guy whose mantra is to under promise and over deliver. His favorite quote is from Jackie Robinson and it beautifully speaks to what kind of man he is, “A life is only valuable based on the positive impact it has on other lives.’ It’s at the bottom of all of my emails and it’s what I believe in every day.” And, with that belief, comes the hard work that needs to be seen to be believed.

THE CALENDAR YEAR OF AN NFL AGENT *NFL coaches, players and agents have a different schedule than the rest of us. Their Christmas and New Year come the week after the NFL Draft in late April. They work straight through the normal holiday season. “In all honesty, most people in our business haven’t had a day off since before NFL training camps start, which is mid-July,” Schaffer explains. Asked when he last had a vacation, Peter replied, “I guess my honeymoon. 22 years ago.” Here’s what he’s talking about….

•
We’re recruiting all fall, with college visits and meetings, trying to get players to sign. I travel to college bowl games in December and January while also managing my current clients who are playing in the NFL playoffs. At the same time, I’m also managing my clients who are on NFL practice squads and I’m also responsible for clients who might be playing in the new XFL in the spring.
•
As soon as the bowl games are over in January, I’m flying to places like Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, and Phoenix to set up my players with housing and training.
•
Also in January, the East/West Shrine Game and the NFL Players’ Association Game are played in the same week, so I’m in Tampa for a few days before I fly across country to Los Angeles.
•
When I return to Cherry Creek, I then double back to Mobile, Alabama, for the Senior Bowl the following week.
•
When the week of the Senior Bowl is done, I fly directly to Orlando for the NFL Pro Bowl.
•
I return home for two days before I leave for the Super Bowl in Miami. The Super Bowl is four days of no sleep, and it’s not a glamorous trip. It’s crowded with plenty of meetings with Nike, Adidas and Under Armour about player marketing. I’m also responsible for housing and party credentials for all of my clients and their families who are in town for Super Bowl week. It’s non-stop.
•
After Miami, I’m back in Denver for three weeks until it’s time for the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. This five-day trip involves meetings with NFL teams about free agents, getting any of my players ready for the Combine, talking to scouts about current players as well as those not at the Combine. That’s important. I’m at the Combine to talk about the big names, the lesser known players and everyone in between.
•
After the Combine are the Pro Days. Those take place on college campuses across the country and I’m going anywhere and everywhere, from South Bend, Indiana, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Norman, Oklahoma, and Eugene, Oregon. Pro Days end two weeks before the NFL Draft in late April.
•
Once the NFL Draft is over, you get Christmas and New Year’s during that one week in May.
•
Then you have to start negotiating contracts for your drafted players. That’s when that internal alarm goes off and I realize, “Shoot. I have to start recruiting next year’s class.” And you start the cycle all over again.

Even as a college senior at Colorado, I knew I had an entrepreneurial spirit, and I wanted someone who could guide me and advise me. Peter is a practicing attorney, so to have an agent who can give legal advice in setting up my businesses was an important piece of the puzzle for me. Why not have all rolled into one? That’s what I got with Peter. It’s getting feedback from a friend. My NFL career has been over since 2007, but it’s a lifelong connection and friendship with him and his family, and that’s what I was hoping for.”

He might be the “anti-agent,” because he’s one of the nicest, genuine, real guys I’ve ever met. We have a common love for golf and we’d play countless hours together while he’s on the phone negotiating contracts and doing his thing. Our families vacation together. He gave me an idea on how to go about my career and my life and he’s been very instrumental in that. For me, it’s more of a friendship than an agentclient relationship. His credo is, ‘Do the right thing and it’ll work out.’ What I love most about him is that he finds the good in everybody.”

Our families are close. Whenever I have something that I want to talk about, I can call him whether it’s football-related, legal-related or familyrelated. He always calls me, checks in and makes sure everything is good. I always appreciate that. During those years when I wasn’t getting nominated for the Hall of Fame, Peter would always tell me to be patient and that I was deserving and that it’s going to happen.” When Peter’s daughter Lilian was diagnosed with cancer, Peter went home to gather some of her belongings for her hospital stay. When he returned to the hospital, Steve Atwater was there in the room and he stayed all night. Peter didn’t remember telling Atwater about Lilian’s condition and he didn’t know how Atwater knew about it. That’s all you need to know about Atwater and Schaffer’s relationship.

When we first met, Peter was very straight forward and to the point, which I appreciated. I liked him and I liked his history of NFL clients as well. I was undersized as a player and went undrafted, but Peter always found opportunities for me to get in front of general managers and coaches to show what I could do on the field, and that’s what I needed. Since I finished my career in Denver, I grew closer to Peter and his family and his proximity gave me more of an opportunity to seek both business and family advice from him. He knows precisely what he’s good at and if he knows he’s not the best at something, then he’ll immediately put you in the direction with the right person. He’s been a great resource, but, more so, he’s a great friend and extension of my family since we’ve been here in Colorado.”
