Our two sweet boys always feel like home.
T
he grass is getting greener, the bulbs are showing their beautifully determined heads from beneath the surface, and the neighborhood’s patios are filled with diners eager to spend an afternoon catching up in the Colorado sun. Yes, spring is official here and summer won’t be far behind. For us, there’s no better time or place in the entire state than springtime in Cherry Creek. Fresh, bright, colorful, hopeful – they’re all adjectives that describe the season and, in many ways, Cherry Creek itself. Take for example the recently refreshed Hotel Clio (page 55). The former JW Marriott has a new name, new look and decidedly new vibe. We’re loving the hotel’s stunningly reimagined interiors – some of the most beautiful in the city, indeed. Or the one-of-akind art that Jim Vilona (page 36) creates for Robert Zimmerman’s gallery, ELEMENT Home. These unique furnishings and lighting pieces are both inventive and inspired. Of course, this being our Home Issue, we’re particularly moved by the spaces that you call your own. In our At Home in Cherry Creek feature (page 59) we chat with the designers, real estate professionals, galleries, and brands that make this the very best neighborhood in all of Colorado. In Vibrant Interiors (page 48), and on our eye-catching cover, we celebrate the work of nationally acclaimed designer Andrea Monath Schumacher. Known for her fearless sense of style, Schumacher’s debut book, Vibrant Interiors: Living Large at Home hits shelves this month, and we can’t wait. Happy spring, from our home to yours. Yours truly,

THE DESIGNER
Andrea Monath Schumacher has long been a celebrated Denver designer. Now, she is unveiling her first tome (read more on page 48). Vibrant Interiors: Living Large at Home beautifully showcases Schumacher’s unabashed use of bold color via more than 200 images and compelling narrative. In this book of highly curated interiors, the globetrotting designer reveals how she blends genres and breaks rules to create spaces that are both lively and inspired. Vibrant Interiors largely focuses on six specific homes – Shumacher’s own Denver-area abode being one of them. We particularly love the Cherry Hills Village stunner featured on this season’s cover. With an edict of making every day feel like a vacation, Shumacher and her talented team transformed the 12,000-sqaure-foot home into a Hamptons-style oasis. Brimming with classic style and plenty of unexpected moments (like the spines of the books on these gorgeously trimmed shelves turned backwards) the home was the perfect choice for our Spring issue. Shown here is the homeowners’ own collection of carnival glass vases. This handmade iridescent glassware was highly coveted in the roaring 1920s and lends a vintage appeal to the room.
THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Renowned photographer Roger Davies strikingly captured much of Schumacher’s work for Vibrant Interiors: Living Large at Home, including our stunning cover image. An English born photographer living in Los Angeles, Davies has traveled the world shooting interiors and portraits for some of the most recognized names in the design space. rogerdaviesphotography.com
THE ART
Nothing punctuates a space more exquisitely than the perfect piece of art. Kelton Osborn’s Subsiding was the ideal choice for the living room that adorns our cover. As seen in Andrea Monath Schumacher’s debut book, the space is warm yet whimsical, and Osborn’s mixed media work has us completely captivated. In a market rich with realtors, Ann Kerr stands out from the pack. And while her sales record speaks for itself, (Ann is recognized as one of Denver’s top producers and has been named to the Who’s Who of Luxury Real Estate) she’s anything but a salesperson, believing instead in the power of relationships. “I’m not very good at ‘selling’ per se – my view on brokerage is that my role is to help my client make the best buying or selling decision relying on my expertise, which may or may not result in a sale in the short term,” the long time Cherry Hills Village resident reveals. “I’m in it for the long haul and as a friend and neighbor to many of my clients, I value these personal relationships.” Indeed, her more than twenty-year tenure in the industry reflects the type of staying power that can only be achieved through honesty, integrity and unrelenting authenticity.
What’s more, when you hire Ann, you get Ann. “I answer phone calls and emails directly. It’s extremely important to me that I take responsibility for knowing every detail of every transaction,” she attests. A notion that may seem simple, but in a thriving market such as Denver’s, one that is far too often not the case. “There are so many ‘experts’ in the media providing misleading information which cannot be universally applied across the board to every home sale,” she explains. “A broker who has experience in your area and has been selling real estate through many market cycles can give the best advice on selling your home to the right buyer for the right price.” It’s this type of honesty and expertise that has made Ann not only a real estate leader, but a community leader as well. In fact, she has served on countless boards and committees including the Cherry Hills Village Planning and Zoning Commission, The John Lynch Foundation, University of Oklahoma Alumni Association, Swim Across America, the Cherry Hills Village Elementary School Accountability Committee, PIVOT, the Colorado Lacrosse Foundation, US Lacrosse and the University of Denver Lacrosse, and the Denver Ballet Guild.
I’m in it for the long haul and as a friend and neighbor to many of my clients, I value these personal relationships. Ann most definitely walks the walk, enlisting a wide variety of tools and programs for both buyers and sellers. “No two clients and no two homes are alike. I like to approach each listing from a fresh perspective, engaging my wide network of contacts and a wide variety of strategies – whether it’s a wine tasting event at a new listing or an article in a local publication – to sell a home.” This creativity, coupled with tried-and-true knowledge and a stellar reputation, serves her clients extremely well. “To be successful in any kind of real estate market, you must start with the needs of your clients, always be committed to those needs and utilize your experience to the maximum,” she finishes.

GO WEST Denver-based real estate and community developer East West Partners has announced that it is launching a transformative redevelopment of the land immediately west of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center in Cherry Creek. This property consists of Brio, Elway’s, the former Container Store, the former Bed Bath & Beyond and the parking lot where the Farmers’ Market is held. It’s 13 acres total and about nine city blocks. Construction is anticipated to start in 2023 and the timeline for the buildout is still very much TBD, but the first phase of completion is expected within five years, with total completion probably more like 10 years. As owners of the land and adjacent Cherry Creek Shopping Center, the Buell Foundation and Taubman Realty Group are key collaborators, providing important feedback and guidance on master planning efforts. The project, christened Cherry Creek West, will span from University Blvd. to Clayton St. and from 1st Ave. to the Cherry Creek waterway. The endeavor will build upon the City of Denver’s planning efforts to ensure a connected, distinctive and prosperous Cherry Creek area through the creation of a vibrant neighborhood to be completed over the next decade. “We will create a neighborhood that enhances the entire community by bringing it together with the creek and the shopping center, with a focus on people over cars,” said Amy Cara, managing partner of East West Partners. “We are thrilled to bring our vision for a vibrant new 15-minute neighborhood to life on this prominent piece of real estate.” The preliminary plan includes seven buildings with a mix of office, residential and retail plus a lively public area with an amphitheater and market square. Booted Tecovas, the company that was born out of a love for cowboy boots has walked its way into Cherry Creek, bringing its time-honored craftsmanship, rich materials that last, and traditional styling that always looks good. Hand-made in Leon, Mexico, where the tradition goes back generations, the western footwear brand takes an entire team of artisans over 200 steps to make a single boot by hand. The boots are twice the quality of similarly-priced boots and half the price of similar top-quality boots because they cut out the retailer markups. Located next to Yeti on E. HOW SWEET IT IS… CHERRY CREEK’S BEST DESSERTS We love a good dessert, and Cherry Creek is chalk full of the city’s most decadent and delectable options. From almond toffee that dates back nearly 100 years, to a peach bread pudding that will change your life, these are our picks for the neighborhood’s best sweet treats.
1
Local Jones: Orange Creamsicle This uniquely delicious, nostalgic dessert is quickly becoming a Cherry Creek classic. The work of in-house pastry chef Saura Kline, the shortbread mascarpone delicacies are drizzled in an orange vanilla crème sauce that evokes the taste of the summertime childhood favorite. A must order on every trip to Local Jones. 249 Columbine Street (in the Halcyon) localjones.com

2
Cucina Colore: Peach Bread Pudding There’s a reason it was honored as “Best Dessert” in our annual Peak of the Creek Awards. Because it’s exactly that – the neighborhood’s undisputed (in our book) best dessert. The decadent, rich bread pudding is perfectly made with fresh peaches and a custard-like texture. It’s drizzled with a buttery, warm caramel sauce (homemade, of course), fresh berries, and whipped cream. With a nearly 30-year history in Cherry Creek North, Cucina Colore does a lot of things right, and the Peach Bread Pudding is undoubtedly at the top of that list. 3041 East 3rd Avenue cucinacolore.com
3
801 Chophouse: Death by Chocolate Cake If you must meet your maker, death by chocolate cake is likely the best way to go. All kidding aside, this decadent dessert from 801 Chophouse is everything a chocolate lover dreams of. Served with chocolate ganache, chocolate cookie crumble, and a scoop of chocolate ice cream, the cake itself is perfectly balanced. Not too dense, but not too dry either. It’s big enough for the whole table to share, or, if you’re so inclined, keep it all for yourself. Either way, it’s to die for. 3000 East 1st Avenue 801chophouse.com/denver
4
Heaven Creamery: Belgian Waffles The aptly named Heaven Creamery is indeed heaven. Our favorite? Any one of the insanely delicious Belgian Waffles. From dulce de leche to fresh peaches and brie, Nutella, and seasonal berries, there’s a flavor to suit every palate. Try the Reese’s - peanut butter, chocolate sauce, banana, and Reese’s ice cream over a freshly made, warm Belgian Waffle. Yes, please. 299 Milwaukee Street heavencreamery.com

Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge: La Bomba Another of our Peak of the Creek winners, La Bomba is indeed, the bomb. As pretty as it is tasty, the chocolate sphere is served as an edible bowl. Once opened, a trove of cream cheese mousse, fresh berries, and cookie crumbles reveal themselves. The dessert is adorned with edible flowers, three delicious sauces, and multiple ice cream flavors. 150 Clayton Lane (in Hotel Clio) torodenver.com
6
Hillstone: Hot Fudge Sundae with Candied Pecans Not all ice cream sundaes are created equal, and Hillstone’s iteration is easily Cherry Creek’s best. The dessert, while simple, is over the top delicious. Every last thing is homemade, from the decadent chocolate sauce that’s served in its own compote for drizzling as much or as little as your heart desires, to the perfect, slow churned vanilla ice cream. The crowning jewels, however, are the candied pecans that dot the generous serving of whipped cream on top of the sundae. If you know, you know. 303 Josephine Street hillstonerestaurant.com

things timeless and tastefully rebellious.
Enstrom Candies: Milk Chocolate Almond Toffee A box of almond toffee from Enstrom Candies is as quintessentially Colorado as it gets. Since 1929, the family-owned business has been making the finest toffee and confections around, and we don’t think there’s anything that compares. We love spending an afternoon at the brand’s Cherry Creek locale, where a cup of coffee and a bite of that worldfamous, melt-in-yourmouth toffee is always a winning combination. 201 University Boulevard enstrom.com

Last year, the resort received its first major renovation since its opening, with more than $100 million invested in updated rooms, new furnishings, upgraded technology, and the expansion of the property’s top three villas. Timed perfectly with the luxe resort’s 25th anniversary, Hawaii Loa Presidential Villa, Makaloa Villa and Ho`onanea Villa were all reimagined, making them the largest and most luxurious villa accommodations in Hawaii. The makeover also included a new, elevated infinity pool and lounge deck at King’s Pond, Hualalai’s 1.8-million-gallon swimmable aquarium; the Kumu Kai Marine Center; a new gourmet poolside menu from Executive Chef Richard Polhemus, and a transformation of the signature Hualalai Golf Course. Speaking of which, a tee time and day on the links at Hualalai Golf Course will undoubtedly go down as an outing for the ages. How do you finish playing an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature championship masterpiece in Hawaii and not feel like you’ve witnessed something out of this world? There’s a nineacre driving range that includes a chipping and short-game practice area, two sand bunkers and a putting green. Now you’re ready for over 7,100 yards that the Mitsubishi Electric Championship calls home every January, with holes featuring everything from lush oasis, black lava rock and the brilliant Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, your personal caddie carries your clubs while walking or riding the course, giving insider advice on how to play each hole. We also loved the newly built Hualalai Golf Hale. This 3,000 square foot instruction and practice facility is located at the driving range and includes state-of-theart technology, entertainment and unique programming created by the pros at the Hualalai Golf Academy.

So, there’s a day working on your tan and your golf handicap, and then there’s a day at The Hualalai Spa working out the knots, harnessing your chi energy and getting in a much needed 80-minute nap with a waft of lavender in the air. Four Seasons wouldn’t dare compromise those famous Hawaiian ocean breezes by putting its spa guests indoors, hence our first introduction to the hale – a traditional Hawaiian thatched-roof dwelling which, in this case, was mingled within the stunning spa gardens. There’s nothing that isn’t offered when it comes to body scrubs, wraps, treatments, manicures and pedicures, skincare, massage therapy, yoga, Pilates, acupuncture, sleep therapy and meditation. Throw in the steam room, sauna, hot tub, private men’s and women’s spa lounges, workout center, tennis courts and swimming pool, and it must be time to fuel that body with something to eat.
‘Ulu Ocean Grill could not be more appropriately named, with its awardwinning cuisine served less than 20 yards from the surf and where 75 percent of the food comes fresh from the ocean and local farms. Beach Tree is another can’t-miss. Described as the essence of “barefoot elegance,” this oceanside restaurant brings the feel of a Hawaiian beach house, where you can dine on the sand or in the open-air dining room as you savor Californian cuisine with an Italian twist. Our personal favorite? We still reminisce about the Residents’ Beach House. Of course, it’s on the water, and the casual lanai dining evokes a vibe of an out-of-the-way patio and bar with a delectable menu.
Naturally, accommodations at the five-star paradise do not disappoint, and all 249 guest rooms and suites are beautifully appointed with brand new furnishings and finishes. Yet for us, the cherry on top of this Hawaiian paradise was the resort’s recent collaboration with acclaimed fine art photographer Gray Malin. Known for his aerial approach to capturing the world’s most iconic destinations, the Gray Malin X Four Seasons Resorts Hawaii collection features ethereal shots of each of the resorts taken by Malin from a doorless helicopter. In particular, Four Seasons Hualalai transformed its Beach Tree Pool to bring the collection to life. Cabanas and poolside chairs are adorned with curated pillows and custom Gray Malin acrylic trays, creating the ideal al fresco setting to enjoy the Gray Malin Kokomo cocktail and take in the island scenery.

Hawaii is such an entrancing land. Its seclusion makes it all the more extraordinary and breathtaking. The people, the history, the culture and the unmitigated magic of this part of the world made this experience arguably the best that we’ve been on through all of our travels. Thank goodness for cameras so that we can retain the astounding beauty that is the Big Island and its ambassadors like Hualalai. M

JIM VILONA AT ELEMENT HOME For the debut of our new department, Artist in Residence, we sat down with ELEMENT Home Cherry Creek owner Robert Zimmerman and Berthoud, Colorado, artist Jim Vilona to learn all about this spectacular partnership between two brands that Cherry Creek North is privileged to call part of its family.
Robert, what is it about Jim’s work that you like so much? Why is his work such a good fit with ELEMENT Home? Jim brings something incredibly special to the world of home fashion. I have always strived to find the most extraordinary and unique pieces for my clients. In combination with Mother Nature’s most beautiful work, Jim’s presentation of his metal mastery makes for the most mind-blowing sculptures, tables and lighting. His work elevates the beauty of my showroom and brings excitement to all. In addition, Jim’s personality is electric. He dazzles all that he meets. This is what ELEMENT Home is all about.
Jim, where do you get your inspiration from? The agates, petrified wood and crystals are the record keepers of our planet through the millions of years it has taken for the earth to create each piece, and it’s my honor to create artwork with them, and combine these naturally occurring materials. I handmake what is possible in the urban world, a balance between organic shapes and the hand-made artistry of metalwork that gives them life.
ROBERT ZIMMERMAN
I utilize what nature has grown in its deepest and most sincere efforts. I have the privilege of utilizing the earths’ gifts to create pieces of art for personal and corporate collections through ELEMENT Home in Cherry Creek North. Once each piece begins, the unique characteristics of material that interact together with the specific steel that I use, the textures I create that interweave the story of the stone with the metal, create a finished work of art that tells its own story.
Jim, what has the partnership with Robert done for you? It’s a rare and beautiful thing to have built a relationship in which you can create beautiful and amazing things and have a collaborative partner who has the same intentions.
Robert, what has the partnership done for you?
JIM VILONA
This partnership has taught me how to reach for the stars. Each piece is more fabulous than the last, and this is what my clients go crazy for. In fact, I have had bidding wars over some of his pieces. I’ve never seen anything like it. The clients’ reactions are always exciting and I love seeing the joy it brings to them.
*ELEMENT Home represents over 40 lines of home furnishings as well as original fine art from 25 local and nationally renowned artists - not big box/chain store furniture or decorative art. Most of the furniture is made to order with limitless custom options, while offering design services to create a very personalized plan for each client.

Santa Fe Rockers Come See us at Vail Arts Festival June 17-19
Do you two work together on project creation or does Jim have free rein do whatever he wants for ELEMENT Home?
Cherry Creek Arts Festival July 1-3
We quite often work on projects or creations together. I love visiting his studio and workshop to hand pick the most spectacular stones and help create the presentation. Jim goes to great lengths to take our plans into orbit. However, Jim’s creative mind alone is simply brilliant. I am literally brought to tears when he presents his new work, especially when he installed everything in my new Cherry Creek North showroom. He makes spectacular chandeliers, crystal floor lights and unbelievable tables. Words cannot describe my appreciation and amazement for all that he did.
How long has this partnership been going on? How did it all start? It’s been nearly five years now. I had originally met Jim through his lovely wife, Cheri. She is an amazing artist, and I love representing her beautiful paintings. They have this wonderful ranch up in Berthoud with multiple studios and workshops and visiting them is such a sensory overload, especially with such a lovely mountain view. Their son Dylan is also a brilliant artist. It’s such a talented family! Most importantly, I consider Jim and Cheri to be two of my dearest friends. I cherish our relationship.
Robert, do you have a favorite piece of furniture or lighting fixture that Jim has produced over the years? Most of the agate slab tables are beyond incredible. I love learning and then sharing the history and provenance. However, one of my favorite projects was collaborating with Jim on a client’s three story cascading/ spiraling onyx chandelier. It was absolutely awe inspiring!
Jim, what goes into putting together a project from start to finish and how long does it normally take to complete? Each customer project is an opportunity to utilize my imagination and training to fulfill their interests and create a unique piece for their home. We spend much time getting a clear idea of what is being asked, and we have many pieces of carefully hand-selected natural material that will work in the client’s project. Careful sketches are done, and metal and finishes and textures decided upon, and then the work and creation in my studio begins! Each piece could be weeks or months to completion, depending on multiple levels of details. The goal is a finished piece the client is over the moon about receiving!

MICHAEL MOORE MOORE FOR LIFE When it comes to Cherry Creek, Michael Moore has, as they say, skin in the game - both literally and figuratively. The lauded makeup artist and skincare guru has been a neighborhood fixture for over 20 years, and is known for his natural, achievable approach. We couldn’t resist calling on the man who’s been beautifying the area for two decades to be our Man About Town.
Favorite neighborhood haunts? My two favorite places in Cherry Creek North are Hillstone and Cherry Creek Grill. I love when you fall in love with a restaurant or establishment and it stays consistent, so you get that same experience over and over.
What are the three items that you can’t live without?
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve witnessed at Moore For Life?
Where are you going on your next vacation?
Right now, I would say I cannot live without my cell phone, a candle glowing in my home at night, and a very comfortable pair of shoes or slippers.
I’m thinking about taking a trip to the shore of Lake Michigan this summer.
I was working with a lady one day who was visiting from Missouri, and we realized that her best friend was my aunt. So crazy! It really is such a small world, and no place epitomizes this more than Cherry Creek.
Who are your five dream guests to join you at a dinner party, and what are you eating? Mother Theresa, Hilary Clinton, Michelle Kwan, John F. Kennedy and my mother. We’ll be dining on something that will be simple, clean and healthy because the conversations will be so filling.
What’s the last movie you enjoyed watching? The original West Side Story. I watched it over my spring break.
What’s a surprising fact to working in your industry that people working outside it may not know?
The most fun you’ve had in a city? Vienna, Austria.
How it can truly impact a person’s life and how bad it can be on my body after 34 years. Standing and doing makeup all day definitely takes its toll.
What would you tell your 18-yearold self now?
Talk about working backstage in New York City during Fashion Week. The vibe and entertainment changed depending on the call times for models and talent. If it was a 6 am call time then people were dragging, versus a later-in-the-day call time when it was always filled with more energy. One of the most memorable moments was having to walk around Donald Trump all the time when he was newly dating his now wife - telling her how fabulous she looked and how she was the most beautiful woman in the room. Meanwhile, his daughter was only two chairs down. Fashion Week can be some of the most cool and stressful times in a person’s career, but they are always good memories overall.

CHRISTINE DES ENFANTS CHERRY CREEK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Christine Des Enfants could probably walk Cherry Creek North with her eyes closed. The Executive Director of the Cherry Creek Chamber of Commerce has been headquartered in the neighborhood for nearly 15 years. She knows everyone and everything about the community, its history, its merchants and its future. Naturally, she’s a gal about town regardless of our induction… we’re just making it official.
What is your favorite thing about Cherry Creek? The people! We’re in the most prestigious shopping district in the Rocky Mountains and yet the people that work in this district are wonderfully down to earth and accessible. It’s so enjoyable to work in Cherry Creek – it brings about such a positive energy.
A friend is coming to visit Cherry Creek for the first time. What are the “insider tips” you share with her before her stay? Any place she can’t skip?
Favorite way to relax on a weekend? Hike or snowshoe in the high country.
One of the most exciting things that has happened in Cherry Creek this past decade is the addition of restaurant rooftops. I would definitely give them a list of our rooftops and the beautiful patios in the area so that my friend could enjoy the stunning Colorado weather. The Halcyon Hotel, The Jacquard, Del Frisco’s and The Clayton…there are too many great patios to list!
Favorite Cherry Creek restaurant? There are too many to choose from! A restaurant that’s not good cannot make it in Cherry Creek. I do have to admit that I love all of the new healthy restaurants that are coming into the area.
Most beautiful place you’ve visited in Colorado? In the world?
Describe your personal style.
When I was younger, I climbed a lot of 14,000 foot mountains in Colorado. This was in the 1990s. My favorite was Uncompahgre Peak in the San Juan Mountains. Climbing mountains in Colorado is the most incredible way to really know this state and all its treasures.
Authentic and real. It must be that humble Midwest upbringing, but I really strive to be as natural as possible in my interactions, makeup, hair, clothing, and everything else.
Five dream dinner party guests? Since I love reading history, I would love to have a few of our founders and early leaders over for dinner. George Washington. Thomas Jefferson. Benjamin Franklin. Teddy Roosevelt. Abraham Lincoln. I would not say a word but just listen attentively to the stories of this unbelievable experiment called America.
The most beautiful place in the world? I adore Paris.
Do you “collect” anything? Yes, I love to collect great people in my life. There is nothing better!

with investing in human capital,” Keffeler details. “This resulted in strained relationships and a lack of leadership development and selfactualization in their family.”
can be tricky helping high-net worth families manage their wealth while they also navigate often complicated family dynamics.
Fortunately, Denver-based Johnson Financial Group (JFG) has been doing it for over 20 years, and now the integrated family office and wealth management firm has brought on a new superstar who is no stranger to coaching families through challenging issues.
Keffeler said Brandon’s personal experience of living through these challenges led him to be a passionate student of how to best maximize the human capital within family systems. “This focus is now ingrained into the DNA of the firm which, quite honestly, is the reason I was interested in partnering with them and coming aboard as an integral member of their team.”
Meet Kristin Keffeler. She is JFG’s new Chief Learning Officer and has spent 16 years working with family enterprises, wealthy families and rising generations. Keffeler’s appointment gives JFG a new way to support clients.
While not every family is healthy, Keffler notes that with a little support, families can be incredible places for individuals to grow, learn, and thrive.
“We believe that Kristin’s interactions with our clients will be truly transformational, giving the families we work with the opportunity to learn the best practices about communication, strength building and establishing a healthy legacy,” said Brandon Johnson, JFG’s Principal and CEO. An Ivy League alum who earned her master’s degree at Penn in applied positive psychology, and a master’s degree in business management from the University of Denver, Keffeler is skilled at helping families who own a joint operating entity together, or who own a joint interest in a significant common asset. “All of the work I do focuses on who these individuals truly are. What are the collective human assets in this system and how do we best use these assets to the highest good of the individual and the family?” Keffeler explains.
“
Keffeler shares the story of a Denverbased family with two adult children who approached her after a significant wealth creation event.
“JFG’s mission to help families succeed aligns well with Keffeler’s focus on maximizing human capital, a key for families to achieve a happy, thriving, fulfilled legacy.”
JFG’s mission to help families succeed aligns well with Keffeler’s focus on maximizing human capital, a key for families to achieve a happy, thriving, fulfilled legacy. “It comes from Brandon Johnson’s own family story of being a third generation in a significant family and seeing how all of the focus was on protecting and enhancing financial capital. The family really struggled
“In my first meeting with the couple, I could see them wrestling with their concern about the impact wealth could have on their kids. At one point, the father teared up and said, ‘I’ve seen it ruin too many of my friend’s kids. I don’t want this money ruining mine.’ Through a process of defining the family’s core values, an overarching family mission, and envisioning what it would look like if all members of the family were thriving in 10 or 20 years, Keffeler was able to help the couple get organized around their wealth in a way that put their family’s well-being at the center of the work. “The family began having regular meetings and slowly built the skills to have honest, direct, and productive conversations about money, wealth, and relationships.”
Keffeler believes that people with significant financial assets are some of the biggest change makers in our communities and through JFG, she hopes to transform that belief into reality.

CULINARY DROPOUT We’re married. We work together. We see each other all the time. So, what could we possibly talk about while out for dinner? In this case, food. And lots of it. Join us as we drop in on Culinary Dropout.
He: If you haven’t noticed, I can’t stop He: I’ve been excited for this for a while. I looked at the menu online and this is my kind of restaurant. Lots of flavor profiles with almost everything made from scratch, starting with these Pork Belly Nachos. There’s great balance here. Nachos can end up being heavy, but these are light and they don’t kill my appetite moving forward.
She: Definitely. This whole area at 9th and Colorado has really become a destination in and of itself. An annex of sorts to Cherry Creek. We tried the restaurant next door – Blanco – with friends a few weeks ago and it was great so I, too, was excited for this. Did you know both are part of the same folks behind three of our other Cherry Creek favorites, North, True Food Kitchen, and Flowerchild? Some serious culinary superpower going on here.
She: I totally agree. My entrée is great, too. Not something I pictured myself ordering at a restaurant that’s known for its comfort food, but the Spicy Vegan Curry (with chicken so I unveganized it) is fabulous. Spicy enough, but not too much. Really great flavors.
He: I did know that, and so far all of those restaurants have been hits with us.
He: The music here is fun. Some hip alternative tunes that I could see in an American Pie film with Stiffler doing something crazy. Plus, I see people here in their 20s and people here in their 80s. This place is hoppin’.
Our server Cameron knows his stuff. He has great knowledge of the menu and he checks in. I love it. He reminds me of a taller Adrian Grenier from Entourage.
She: Yes. Definitely an eclectic crowd. Totally
She: Ha! He does! I miss that show. The movie was terrible, though. He: They have a great cocktail list. I like how the Dropout Classic Mule doesn’t come in the copper mug. That’s a nice change. By the way, I count six people behind the bar and I can see why, this place is gigantic, but I also think it ensures quicker service.
She: My cocktail, Tijuana Spa Water, is one of the best I’ve had recently. And thanks to our two toddlers, I’ve had a lot of cocktails recently. It’s a take on a margarita, but with jalapeno, mint, pineapple and cilantro. Kind of like a Mexican Mojito. He: There are three TVs behind you. While you were talking about our kids’ future college fund or whatever it was, I got to watch Oklahoma vs. Baylor in the Big 12 Tournament as well as the Avalanche playing the Hurricanes. Good stuff.
She: Yep. The perfect place to come for dinner and tune out your spouse. I mean, there’s so much to look at. All kidding aside, it’s nice to be out and about with you. It has been far too long. Plus, the Brussels Sprouts with this Korean Gochujang sauce is heavenly.

eating them. I’m also very happy with the pork ribs in a jalapeno molasses sauce. And these fries might be the best in Denver.
appropriate for a first date or a family dinner alike. Casual, but cool and incredibly tasty.
He: This is hands-down the best dessert I’ve had in years. I know dessert is subjective, but the Monkey Bread - cinnamon apple brioche & vanilla ice cream – is pretty much a warm apple fritter and I’m voting for it in our Peak of the Creek awards in our Summer Issue. She: Absolutely heavenly. The perfect way to end a perfect meal. Kevin and Betsy Marr are “he” and “she.” They work and live in Denver where they produce Cherry Creek Magazine and raise their two toddler boys all under one roof.

What’s the best drink we’ve never had? The Troon. It’s an interesting name, but it’s a term of endearment around 801. Troon was the name of the owner’s dog. It’s a balanced cocktail with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, Absolut Ruby Red vodka, a touch of sugar and a grapefruit wedge to garnish. It’s a perfect combination of sweet and tart.
Is there a cocktail with a particularly interesting backstory that you appreciate? The very classic, often requested, gin and tonic. It was originally given for medicinal purposes as tonic and quinine for British soldiers stationed in colonial India. However, it tasted horrible, so the soldiers added gin to make it go down easier. It continues to be one of the all-time classics with countless variations.
How did you get into the industry? I fell into the industry by mistake and out of necessity. It’s been very good to me. I thrive in a high-paced environment and one that requires relationship building. I was lucky to secure a spot at 801. It is, by far, the best gig in the city and the best one I’ve had throughout my 25-year career.

What’s the vibe at 801? The vibe at 801 is classy yet comfortable. With so many regulars, it’s hard not to call it home. Whether you want to be wined and dined, want us to know your family history, or celebrate a special occasion, 801 offers that full repertoire. In my years of experience, 801 Chophouse has more familiar faces and it continues to grow every day. We are the best version that Cheers could have ever been with a green jacket.
What’s the funniest or strangest thing you’ve ever overheard from a patron while behind the bar? Me: Good evening! Guest: My wife and mistress both left me. Me: Sounds rough. Guest: Double Jack neat. I need some liquid courage to get back out there. I fulfilled his request and a few minutes passed. Guest: So, can I take you out sometime? Me: I respectfully decline.
Is there a particular drink that you love to make? I like my drinks like I like my kids. I love them all the same. If you want it then I want to make it.
What’s the oddest drink order you’ve ever received? “I don’t know what to drink. Tell me what to drink.”
Where do you get your inspiration? When I dine out, I would like someone like me to take care of me, so I try to put myself in my guests’ shoes and think of what I would want if I was sitting where they are now. It’s about anticipation and exceeding their expectations, but also knowing what they want without them realizing it.
What’s a spring cocktail that you recommend? A Southside. When balanced, it’s the perfect combination between gin, a little sugar, lime juice and mint. It’s refreshing, delicious and it gets the job done. It also makes you ask for one or two more. It has an interesting history as well - it comes from Al Capone’s territory on the southside of Chicago.

The rise and fall of a fashion trend; a roller coaster of a tale stemming from a horrific airplane crash; the story of an entertainment billionaire the likes of which the world has never seen; and an unrivaled history of hip hop all consumed my viewership over the past few months in this edition of View Master.
VIEW MASTER WHAT WE’RE CURRENTLY WATCHING + READING
YELLOWJACKETS In a word…whoa. I watched this every Sunday – no waiting for Monday, Tuesday or later to get around to it. Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girl soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over. Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci might be taking home some awards when it’s all said and done.

THE CURSE OF VON DUTCH I had no idea what Von Dutch even was before this threepart documentary series debuted. It’s the unbelievable true story behind the rise and fall of the 2000’s most iconic fashion trend. In this epic character-driven saga, Venice Beach surfers, gangsters, European garmentos, and Hollywood movers and shakers all vie for control of the infamous brand pushing it from obscurity to one of the most recognizable labels on Earth. After a decade of backstabbing, greed, and bloodshed, their lives and pop culture will never be the same.

This season, I’ve been intrigued by the almost unbelievable stories behind these high-profile cases of scandal and fraud.
THE DROPOUT The story of infamous Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes is both spellbinding and incredibly sad. The limited docuseries, based on the podcast of the same name, follows Holmes’ obsessive quest for success by way of her massively failed attempt to revolutionize bloodwork and lab technology. Actress Amanda Seyfried delivers a nearly perfect performance, one where she eerily evokes the likeness of the deeply nuanced (and deeply troubled) Holmes. The series is gripping, as it tells the story of how Holmes was able to keep the fact that her miracle machines never actually worked from board members, investors and ultimately, real people who were relying on the bogus technology to make importatnt medical decisions. It’s a testament to how perspective can become skewed the deeper one gets into an fanatic pursuit.

MADE YOU LOOK Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, and this Netflix crime documentary is one such case. The “true story about fake art” chronicles the largest scam the American art world has ever seen. A fascinating tale of forgery at the very highest level, Made You Look details how one couple created and sold more than $80 million of works to New York City’s esteemed Knoedler Gallery, which in turn translated to the world’s wealthiest and most notable collectors falling prey to fraudulent works masquerading as Rothkos, Pollocks, Motherwells and more. And while forgery is a fairly common problem in the fine art realm, forgery at this level, from this gallery, was as shocking and scandalous as it gets.

Juicy back stories, feuds and heartbreak make this documentary a wonderful reminder of what’s possible in life.
HIP-HOP EVOLUTION Anyone who appreciates and has a passion for music will find this documentary series on the birth and rise of hip hop undeniably addicting. INVENTING ANNA While critics have been, well, critical of the docuseries based on the scams of Anna Sorokin (AKA Anna Delvey), I found it to be captivating. Based on the 2018 New Yorker article by Jessica Pressler (called Vivian Kent in the series), Inventing Anna delves (pun intended) into Delvey’s tangled web of lies that hoodwinked Manhattan’s high society. From lavish vacations to extended stays at swanky hotels, to many tens of thousands of dollars in designer garb, the scammer paraded around New York as a German heiress, paid for nothing, and fooled nearly everyone in her wake before finally paying the ultimate price with a 4-12 year sentence in federal prison.

Local Design Maven Andrea Monath Schumacher Unveils Her Debut Tome “I firmly believe that a house should never be too serious—you always need to dot a room with pieces that are kind of hilarious, almost so ridiculous and whimsical that they spark a dialogue.” Andrea Schumacher ought to know. Known for her bold, fierce and curatorial sense of style, Schumacher’s work – be it a butterfly sculpture made from recycled cans found on the streets of Manhattan, or a graphic wallpaper adorned with Great Danes – always makes a statement. This month, the celebrated designer unveils her first book. Vibrant Interiors, Living Large at Home (Gibbs Smith, $45), explores Schumacher’s intrepid approach to design through 225 beautiful pages of delightful prose and over 200 vividly captured images. From her inspirations (including an artist grandmother who studied in Paris under Fernand Leger and Salvador Dali during the 1930s) to the signature elements she likes to incorporate into every project (like a comfortable seating vignette for long, lively conversations), Vibrant Interiors peeks behind the brightly colored curtain of Schumacher’s world. The book primarily focuses on six specific projects, each more unique than the last. Meander through a Cherry Hills Village estate that was transformed into a Hamptons-style haven. Explore a 4,000-acre Wyoming ranch where Schumacher and her team created a showstopping trove of texture and unexpected finds (like a 1960s newspaper article about the ranch that she had made into custom wallpaper for the billiard room). Discover a lakefront Colorado home that is equal parts Cape Cod classic and jewel box glam. No matter the space, Andrea Monath Schumacher’s inimitable, decisive eye leads the reader on a journey of high style and endless inspiration.

Talk about how color can impact a space.
CCM:
What’s your best advice for those who are afraid to incorporate color in their homes?
AMS:
Color or even lack thereof, has a long and well-studied history of its effects on emotions. Red and yellow is stimulating. Blues and certain greens are calming, and so on. Be aware of what you want from your space and how to use color to evoke that emotion. Another factor in choosing a color for your home? How YOU personally look in it. Do you have green eyes and want to accentuate that? Use those colors to do so. Look fabulous in your home!
Start small. If you’re afraid of color, use it in ways that are easy to change! Pillows, for example, are a great way to add a bit of personality and drama to your room without a big commitment.
CCM: AMS:
Be honest. What’s your favorite project in the book?
CCM:
An office in Santa Barbara and now a book. Your brand has evolved so much over the years. What’s next for Andrea Schumacher Interiors?
AMS:
That’s a tough one because I love them all! If I had to choose, it would probably have to be my own home. Getting the chance to express my own personal story through design with my family is so special and it means the world to me.
My very own product line, The Liesl Collection! We’ve begun by introducing a line of customer wallpaper, inspired by my artist grandmother, Elizabeth Monath. I have over 50 years of her work that I have begun to pattern and reinterpret into textiles. Getting to pay homage to her creative legacy has been a rewarding and heartfelt process.

THE J.W. MARRIOTT CHERRY CREEK HAS A FRESH NEW FACE
meet
HOTEL
CLIO
THE NEW GIRL IN TOWN BY KEVIN MARR
@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG
C
“It’s in the little things.”
It’s a mantra that the team at Cherry Creek North’s Hotel Clio swears by. Formerly the J.W. Marriott Cherry Creek and the first ever hotel in Cherry Creek North, it all began back in 2004. Today, Hotel Clio is the first in all of Denver to become a member of Marriott International’s The Luxury Collection, and only the second in Colorado with such an exclusive distinction (The Hythe Hotel in Vail holds the other title). Perhaps no one appreciates this new elevated status for the hotel more than one of its own, Director of Sales and Marketing for Hotel Clio, Sean McNamara. “I worked for Starwood Hotels in Hawaii for many years,” he begins. “The Luxury Collection was one of our 10 brands under the Starwood umbrella, and they were known as iconic landmarks that represent destination and are steeped in the history of its locale. They embody the native people and culture.”
So, what does this metamorphosis at 150 Clayton Lane in Cherry Creek North entail? 56
SP R I N G 2022
Simply put, you’d be hard pressed to receive more attention and amenities in the area than right here. Every day’s agenda is focused on the Hotel Clio guests who travel for inspiration and exploration. For instance, with a program named Destination Discoveries, there’s a twice-weekly, conciergeled 30-minute tour of Cherry Creek North consisting of a brief overview of the neighborhood’s history and what it has evolved into. McNamara points out, “there isn’t another hotel more connected to this neighborhood, to the history, and to the mixed use development that has cropped up around the area over the last 20 years.” Then there’s the program called Be Epicurean, comprised of a daily activity, a weekly activity, and a more robust epicurean journey. Chef Richard Sandoval’s on-property Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge will serve as the culinary hub for many of these unique and unforgettable opportunities. For example, a daily adventure could be an afternoon at Toro featuring a mixologist who spotlights various tequilas, how to make the perfect Mercado Margarita, or sampling the restaurant’s Spanish wine list. Guests might also enjoy learning how to make the most delicious guacamole with a tableside demonstration. A weekly epicurean moment could consist of ceviche classes with plantains and tortilla chips from award-winning Executive Chef Oscar Padilla, while taking home a recipe card to enjoy re-creating the dish at any time. An epicurean journey would occur quarterly on the calendar and would be a special dinner at Toro with wine pairings or attending the Cherry Creek Food and Wine Festival. Needless to say, Hotel Clio intends on its guest wanting for nothing, which starts on arrival, where guests won’t walk up to a front desk, but rather take a load off in a nice, luxurious, soft seating environment where a front desk agent will assist you. Oshibori towels – cold in the summer and hot in the winter – will immediately be provided as well as a glass of the hotel’s cherry bubbly cocktail. Instead of a traditional room key, guests will be issued a circular disc in a velvet pouch accompanied by a small piece of jasper with its story as to how that gemstone represents the Hotel Clio brand. The hotel’s multi-million-dollar makeover did not ignore the stunning new lobby, which adheres to the hotel’s tag line – Experience Golden Moments at Hotel Clio. The design narrative stems from Cherry Creek once serving as an old town called Harman, which was one of the last stopovers for prospectors coming out to strike it rich with gold. Therefore, gold streaks run through the lobby marble floor connecting the assorted art work and interior design. There are 193 guest rooms, five one-bedroom suites, and one Presidential Suite replete with marble baths, walk-in showers, double sinks and a soaking tub. It’s a brand standard. Elevated sound systems, butler pantries on every floor, and turn-down service with house-made honey sticks from the property’s rooftop bee hives are also part of the experience, as is an in-room card introducing you to various activities going on in the neighborhood the following day. Again…it’s in the little things. In mythology, Clio was the Greek muse of history, which is apropos considering Hotel Clio’s deep dive into its surroundings and community roots. Winston Churchill famously once said, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” We think, if you have to repeat history or just want to experience it again, then Hotel Clio is just the place to do it.

WORDS OF WISDOM
“Purchase now. There is so much development happening downtown and in Cherry Creek itself. As each commercial building is completed, residential prices rise. Getting in before the (final) build out will be very valuable. Until construction has been maxed out, our price per square foot will most likely continue to go up.”

REAL ESTATE
A place of one’s own
There’s arguably no real estate market in the country that’s stronger, more robust, and more competitive than Colorado’s. And perhaps no Colorado market more dynamic than that of Cherry Creek and its surrounding enclaves. We asked the experts for their take on this unprecedented real estate landscape.
“Real estate in the neighborhood is still experiencing historically unprecedented growth with appreciation at nearly 10% this year, and double that last year. From my porch in Cherry Creek North, I can see four projects under development. For sellers, there is no better time to get in the market and capitalize on the opportunity to get top dollar for your home. For buyers, rising interest rates will have an impact on affordability but if you can get into a home, you’ll ride the appreciation wave with everyone around you.” Justin Joseph, Broker Associate, JD LIV Sotheby’s | joseph-haarer.com
“There are so many websites out there providing misleading information which cannot be universally applied across the board to every home sale. A broker who has experience in your area and has been selling real estate through many market cycles can give the best advice on selling your home to the right buyer for the right price.” Ann Kerr Kentwood DTC | annkerr.com
"
“We all know that hiring an interior designer can help you avoid costly mishaps, but hiring a real estate broker who is also a designer can help you avoid monumental mistakes. So often, buyers purchase a home assuming they can move a wall or rehab a kitchen only to find out that these changes are either exponentially more expensive than they were told or are altogether impossible. On that same note, having a broker who knows what a home could be with a bit of vision can help buyers find that diamond in the rough. It really expands the inventory pool.”

“Not everything is solely about the transaction. Particularly in today’s market, relationships are key. When inventory is as limited as it is now, having strong, longstanding connections can help tremendously. Whether it’s finding off-market deals, or winning a fiercely competitive bidding war, a broker with authentic relationships, who not only knows the market but also knows the people who are at the heart of that market, will be one of your greatest assets.” Jeff Hendley, Founding Broker Compass Denver | jeffhendley.com

STAGING 101 Does staging a home bring in more value to the home? Yes. Does it help others envision themselves living and creating a life there? Absolutely. However, it’s about digging into the bones of the home itself. Bringing a new life to a property that has its own stories to tell is of the utmost importance. The key to staging a property is to tap into the history or current style of the home. A touch of color, a backsplash of neutrals and an overall continuity of style, will guarantee the buyer falling in love with the home immediately. Home staging is all about giving it a refreshing new look and feel, inside and out.

High Design, High Tech “Modern families need thoughtful storage. While the mudroom cubbies hold backpacks, jackets and sports equipment, the upstairs charging station in this Old Cherry Hills home was designed as the tech hub for the client – holding all the iPads, laptops, phones and devices that this family of six requires. Each child and parent has their own fully electrified drawer to plug into at night. Plenty of Room “Creating a bedroom that is welcoming and relaxing is worth the investment. Of all the rooms in your home, your primary bedroom is where you’ll spend the most time. Ensure your space gives you a place to recharge and unwind by indulging in luxurious linens and choosing fabrics and textiles that speak to you. Give your bedside ambient lighting with a beautiful lamp, and always have fresh flowers on your nightstand. We also love to add a wallcovering like the one seen here. It’s simple yet serene and gives the entire space a pop of personality.” Michelle Moriarity, Carla’s A Classic Design carlasaclassicdesign.com

Clean Living
“A great way to incorporate color into a space is by finding a particular textile, surface material or wall covering that you love. From there, we work backwards, layering in all the details to make a cohesive palette. On this project, the client was drawn to this playful wallpaper from Thibaut. We decided the laundry area was the right space for it to be used and built the entire room around the green walls. The result was a pretty, fun and enjoyable space to spend time in.” Merritt Grothe, Forrest Ames Lifestyle forrestameslifestyle.com Photo by Emily Minton Redfield

“When function and beauty meet, they create harmony. Adding what I like to call ‘jewel box moments’ in your home help create that harmony. Layering textures and patterns helps create spaces and moments that engage you, inspire you, and maybe just make you smile.” Sari Mina Ross | sariminaross.com
Have a Seat “For this project I was working with a young family who loved to entertain. My goal was to create a fun and vibrant home with ample seating for when friends were over. We achieved this by sneaking seating in several areas and upholstering them in bright, family-friendly fabrics. There were swivel chairs on either side of their living room sideboard, ottomans tucked under their entry table and window seats custommade for each large window. This gave them the ability to seat 14 adults comfortably in their living room during a party. With this also being the main living space and where the family would spend the majority of their time, it was extremely important that everything could hold up to their three young children. By using performance fabrics and durable materials, they never had to worry when their kids decided to join the party.” Allie McMunn, One Bleecker Interiors onebleecker.com

LEARNING TO BUY
ART & ENTERTAINING Curate & Celebrate!
“The best advice I can give to new art collectors is to discover artwork that you absolutely love, within your budget, and start there. If you are struggling to find the perfect piece, I recommend the possibility of a commission by your favorite artist. One incredible painting or sculpture can be turned into a fine art collection over time. Artwork can evoke special feelings or memories and is what truly connects us.”
Cherry Creek is home to some of the city’s most brilliant art galleries. Likewise, it’s a neighborhood that appreciates the art of entertaining.

We always emphasize to our clients to ‘select artworks which make your heart sing.’ Art is meant to be a reflection of your personality, ideals, and passions - encompassing who you are as a person. TABLE TALK
Today’s host and hostess are not the clichés of the past. Modern entertainers love to find ways to give a nod to traditions, while creating a comfortable, convivial atmosphere for their guests. From the table they set, to the drinks they serve and even where they serve it, entertaining is an art form that has certainly evolved. “We are finding that, more and more, our clients are looking to mix it up when it comes to their fine china and linens,” explains White Peacock’s Emily Gardner. “They’re really gravitating to brighter colors and patterns and shying away from the traditional gold and white. We’re even seeing them combine heirloom china that they’ve inherited with dessert plates and serving pieces from our more contemporary collections. The juxtaposition of old and new is both stunning and a great conversation piece during dinner parties.” From Ginori 1735’s Oriente Italiano line (shown left), to the vibrant yet timeless Tobacco pattern from Mottahedeh, to edgier designers like Versace, Cherry Creek’s White Peacock is definitely not your grandmother’s china shop. 2440 East 3rd Ave | whitepeacockdenver.com

ROCHELLE MCNAUGHTON With so many opportunities to view real estate online, certain educated buyers no longer need real estate brokers to showcase their superior listings. I am very proud to continue giving as much personal advice as possible to help all sellers, buyers and individuals looking for design tips. I truly enjoy working with everyone – buyers, sellers, investors, and design enthusiasts in all aspects of the real estate industry. In my “Designing for the Sale” series, I will continue to offer the most up-to-date tips on creating a home with style that will sell for top dollar in Colorado’s unprecedented market. Today’s buyers are discerning and design-driven, making it more important than ever for a home to be not only inviting and attractive, but also up-to-date before it hits the market.

Expansive Islands
Exterior Makeovers
Barnwood has come a long way in recent years. No longer relegated for shabby chic or farmhouse style, the use of reclaimed and raw, natural barnwood is widespread. I love incorporating it into ultra-modern spaces for a touch of warmth and texture. Used sparingly, it can bring an organic and unexpected sensibility to a room. .
The kitchen is the hub of every home, and the island is the hub of the kitchen. Today’s buyers are looking for large islands – the bigger the better. Perfect for home chefs, entertaining and families, an oversized kitchen island gives the homeowner plenty of space to sprawl out. From marble to quartz and butcher block to concrete, there are many incredible materials that will make an island both beautiful and highly functional.
Particularly in Colorado’s hot market where many listings sell sight unseen, having a beautifully updated exterior is of the utmost importance. From paint, to porches, coach lights to driveways, landscaping and more, there’s many simple ways to make a huge impact when it comes to exteriors. No restaurant is impervious to sudden disaster. Three of Denver’s best share their stories of the nights that live in infamy. By Kevin Marr
@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG
Ryan Fletter - Owner Barolo Grill At the time, we were getting through a heavy COVID situation where we all had to go from inside to outside. We built bungalows that were heated and powered, and we were limited to 50 percent capacity both indoors and outdoors because of the mandate. People were very anxious to get out for Valentine’s Day weekend (February 14th was on a Sunday), even with the six-foot distancing and masks. For us, and everyone in the restaurant industry, it’s one of the busiest times of the year. Well, it was 0 degrees outside due to a once-in-a-lifetime Arctic blast that brought temperatures down to -10 degrees. Once we started firing up all the heaters in the bungalows, I had breakers popping everywhere. Our electrical is so old that it resembles something out of Benjamin Franklin’s wiring system. So, I find myself running extension cords anywhere and everywhere to try and get the power back on. Mind you, this happened at 5 pm on Friday with Valentine’s weekend just getting started. I’m lassoing extension cords over tree limbs and around corners to any sockets that weren’t popping. It was like the building had a stroke – half of its body was working and the other half wasn’t. I was frantic, trying to avoid plugging too many into one spot that might lead to another outage. My fingers were frozen. My toes were frozen. I’ve got my electrician, General Manager and a few other staff members running around helping me, and I’m just laughing at how crazy all of this is. Every other bungalow was without power and heat. Electrical cords are going over our roof and into our neighbor’s sockets. It was like playing Jenga with our electrical system. We stage our guests to come in at 15 minute increments, so we were putting diners who came 15 minutes later in whatever bungalow we could get back on. And then on to the next one. It was like playing whack-a-mole. My adrenal glands were spiraling because I couldn’t get the power back on. I’ve got guests arriving in little dresses and Valentine’s outfits because, for once, everyone’s getting out of their sweat pants and going out for Valentine’s dinner and it’s 0 degrees outside. Thankfully, everyone was a really good sport about it. We did get enough power on and my electrician was able to duct tape the situation together and hold us over. At the end of the evening, I felt like I just ran a marathon. And then it happened again the next night. I had to do the same thing on Saturday evening, but luckily my electrician knew what to do and where to do it. It was still below 10 degrees on this night. On Sunday, Valentine’s Day, we didn’t have any breakers popping. I guess the third time is the charm. Visit Barolo Grill for incredible fare and an unbelievable wine collection, and enjoy their wonderfully powered and warm bungalows. Barologrilldenver.com / 303.393.1040

Alex Seidel - Owner Fruition Back in 2012, it was the day before I was flying to Italy as a U.S. delegate for the Terra Madre event. My sous chef, Matt Vawter, also had the day off and he was on a bike ride when he got a call from Tim Murphy, who was running the kitchen for that evening’s dinner service. Tim tells Matt, “Hey. The hood just fell out of the ceiling.” The hood is the exhaust system that funnels out any grease and air, and it collects any vapors that come off the sauce pans. The screws in the back of the hood had come out, so the hood fell on to where we put the sauté pans up above the stove and, just by chance, it was being held up by some bain-marie pots that were hanging on the wall. If those bain-marie pans weren’t there, then that hood would have swung all the way through and knocked out the three guys who were working on the line. This happened around 5:30 pm, which was just the beginning of dinner service, so it wasn’t super busy yet. Matt calls me. I told him, “Sorry bro. You’re going to have to deal with this.” The team managed to get through the night with the hood resting on the bainmaries. They worked on it a little and made sure that structurally it wouldn’t fall. The kitchen is so small that they had access to everything, and it was a couple of young guys in there who were proud about what they were doing and didn’t want to give up, although they did deal with a lot of smoke issues and runny eyes. We had a full book of reservations that night. The next day before my flight, I brought Matt a checkbook and said, “Find a hood.” And he did. He found the shortest hood for two tall chefs – we’re both over six feet tall and he found a 5’8” hood. The hood is still there. We call it “Bobbin’ & Weavin’.” We would have been closed for weeks without a new hood. We couldn’t cook long term without it. For Matt to be able to find a hood and turn it around in two days was a miracle. Hoods aren’t just sitting out there. Go check out the hood and the award-winning food at Fruition. Troy Guard - Owner Guard and Grace Seven years ago, in the middle of dinner service at around 7 pm, I was in San Francisco when I get a text that the fire department was there because a water pipe burst in the ceiling and the entire dining area at Guard and Grace was under two inches of water. The guests were pretty cool about it, even though water was coming down everywhere, and some people even sat there and continued to eat and enjoy themselves. It ended up closing our restaurant for a month and it cost us a lot of money. We go over these types of scenarios and procedures every day and 99 out of 100 times it’s never going to happen. I thought our staff did a great job handling the situation, considering it could have been worse. It was a crazy evening for us. We did a lot of the clean-up ourselves. Instead of waiting to replace the wood floors by letting them sit and dry for a while, I bought tiles that looked like wood because I didn’t want the restaurant closed any longer than it had to be. It took 18 months to go through the insurance company. Everything seems to happen to restaurants on the busiest night – the dishwasher goes down, a staff member gets sick or, in this case, a waterfall interrupts my packed house dinner service. Experience one of the best steaks anywhere in the country as well as some super dry floors at Guard & Grace. Guardandgrace.com / 303.293.8500
