Editor’s Desk

I’VE ALWAYS HAD A PENCHANT FOR PALM SPRINGS. THE MID-CENTURY modern architecture. The old Hollywood allure. The charming Spanish abodes and the colorful desert landscape speak to my design sensibilities perhaps more so than any other hideaway. And so it was a pleasure and a privilege to take Reign on the road for our Spring cover and fashion shoot. While we love the snowcapped Colorado peaks, we think that every gal needs to get away now and again. We hope you’ll be inspired by our colorful Palm Springs pages in Behind the Gate (page 54). A thrill to work on, I believe this is our most compelling fashion coverage yet and can’t wait to build on this, bringing the highest quality photography, designers and stories to our hometown again and again. After all, we’re so much more than a sports mecca or ski slope. I also hope you’ll heed our advice and get away to one of the extraordinary resorts in Palm Springs Chic (page 50). Your inner designer will thank you. On that note, we also traveled east to Vermont in Heaven on Earth (page 44). It is with no reservations that I tell you Twin Farms is the most incredible experience I have had while traveling with Reign. To say I am in love with this respite wouldn’t do it justice. From the storied folklore (the property long belonged to author Sinclair Lewis) to the incomparable level of service, to the rolling hills and spectacular Jed Johnson interiors, Twin Farms is as idyllic as the photos depict. For travelers looking for the ultimate in genuine, unpretentious luxury there is no better place. Of course, I’m swooning over the lovely pages of this season’s Aisle Style, too. From the unconventional, soulful wedding of Cord and Kelly (Fire & Ice, page 32) to the heartfelt stories in Flooded with Love (page 27), we hope that brides-to-be will draw inspiration from our stunning segments. Most importantly, we hope you’ll join us this spring at the many charitable events of which we are honored to be sponsoring. On May 3rd, we’ll be donning our hats and sipping mint juleps as we head off to the races for both the Boulder Derby Party as well as Denver’s Jockeys, Juleps and Jazz. Then, it’s on to City Park on May 4th where we’ll be participating in Promise Walk – an effort to help those affected by Preeclampsia. Learn more at promisewalk.org/denver. And naturally, we’ll be there with all of our favorite ladies in tow at the annual Cocktails for a Cure benefit on April 9th. Support women’s cancer research and sip in style. Whether you’re reading this from a sandy beach or a snowcapped mountain, we hope that your spring adventures bring you plenty of colorful inspiration for the months ahead.

Yours in style,

Betsy Marr

40 MINUTES to a fit, fabulous you

GROWING UP IN LOS ANGELES, MY FAMILY TOOK numerous trips to Palm Springs – a sleepy desert town that was a short two-hour drive. Back then, Sonny Bono was the mayor. The city was a top destination for out-of-control spring breakers from across the country and Bob Hope’s storied mansion was the only one gracing the iconic hillside. Fast-forward 30 years and Reign Magazine is on site for its spring photo shoot. What a pleasant surprise it was to see that this desert oasis hasn’t changed all that much. The dinosaurs of Cabazon. The hundreds of windmills churning across the landscape. The aerial tramway. Famed Palm Canyon Drive. And while Bob Hope’s hideaway now has some neighbors, it remains the ultimate landmark. Unlike decades past, there’s now an airport in town, affording much more convenient access to the city that was celebrated by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dinah Shore, and Elizabeth Taylor. We think this is our best shoot yet and while we start 2014 with the usual weather elements here in Colorado, we hope our spring issue whets the appetite for warmer temps and cool pools. Elsewhere, I’m excited to share a true treasure in Vermont on page 44. Twin Farms is heaven on Earth regardless of the season. Its accolades and reputation are well deserved. If you find yourself in New England, I encourage you to look into this respite that is an experience unlike any other. I’m also pleased to announce a new column called Reign Man (page 30) intended for your husbands, boyfriends and the men who secretly flip through the pages of Reign. From dining to imbibing, adventure to R&R, Reign Man will inspire new ideas for hitting the town from a gentleman’s perspective. Time to get to work on our Summer book!

Make a Promise Every year, more than 76,000 mothers and 500,000 infants lose their lives to Preeclampsia. It’s one of the biggest health issues women face, affecting almost 10% of all pregnancies, causing blood pressure to rise to fatal levels and exponentially increasing the risk of stroke. And tragically, the only known “cure” is the early induction of baby. Shocked? So were we. But not as shocked as we were when we learned that the condition is grossly underfunded, receiving a fraction of the support of conditions far less fatal. On May 4th, you can help by participating in the Promise Walk, the largest fundraiser for the cause in all of Colorado. Join these moms on a mission in City Park for a mile and a half trek as they raise funds and awareness for Preeclampsia – a condition that in many cases, has affected these ladies and their families on very personal levels. Upstairs Circus 1500 Wynkoop, Denver 720.722.2105 upstairscircus.com

Husband and wife team Kelly and Matt Johannsen are taking DIY to a whole new level with the opening of Upstairs Circus, their watering hole meets arts and crafts class concept smack dab in the middle of LoDo. The name is a nod to the hoopla that goes on in the brain, particularly the right side, and the space is anything but expected. The vibe is industrial chic blended with (naturally) vintage Parisian Circus - black and white striped floors, a magenta quartz countertop, exposed brick and giant hanging umbrellas. There’s a full bar with circus themed cocktails like The Pink Elephant and Clown Car and crafters can even close the joint down for private parties. The projects range from trendy leather and beaded wrap bracelets to custom hip flasks and wooden six pack holders. Think of it as Pinterest in real life, but with cocktails.

Beverly Johnson WORDS BY BETSY MARR

REIGN • SPRING 2014

AS A GIRL, BECOMING A SUPERMODEL was nowhere on Beverly Johnson’s agenda. In fact, growing up in the 1960s, the term wasn’t even in her, or the nation’s, lexicon. But the beauty turned heads and made history when she graced the cover of Vogue in 1974, becoming the first black model to stake such claim. This year, she’ll celebrate her 40th anniversary as a groundbreaking cover girl, a notion that’s not lost on Johnson. “I remember that day like it was yesterday,” the selfproclaimed “modelpreneur” tells us. “That cover is as significant and important today as it was then. It was all about equality and inclusiveness in the fashion industry.” And while today she’s a household name, Beverly Johnson’s beginnings are humble. A typical upbringing in Buffalo, she grew up earning extra money as a lifeguard over the warm New York

summers. With aspirations of a career in law, a young Johnson was preparing to leave for Boston’s Northeastern University when her mother told her in no uncertain terms that she needed to get a summer job in a department store, not a swimming pool, so that she could cultivate the proper wardrobe for a soon-to-be coed. Begrudgingly, Johnson obliged, not knowing that what would transpire next would change her life, and the face of fashion, for good. “One of my coworkers kept telling me that I should be a model. I really didn’t know what she was talking about, but she gave me a slip of paper with an agent’s number, and I tucked it away,” Johnson recalls. Soon, the future supermodel was off to college, forgetting the conversation completely. It would take another year for fate to run its course, when several of her classmates, all of whom hailed from New York City,

U A F G

befriended Johnson and suggested that she join them in the Big Apple over the summer. “‘You could model,’ they said. ‘They make $75 an hour!’” Johnson recalls. At the time, the aspiring attorney was making $28 a week. Remembering the phone number given to her the year before, Johnson made the call that would launch her career. Before she knew what was happening, Beverly Johnson and her mother were boarding a plane for a 10-day photo shoot with Glamour magazine. From there, Vogue followed and Johnson’s now famous cover from August, 1974 made fashion history – an important milestone for both the publishing world and for civil rights. She was 21 years old at the time. The stunning Johnson went on to eventually grace more than 500 magazine covers over the course of her career and by 1975, every major American fashion designer began using African American models. Yet according to Johnson, we still have a long way to go. “There’s a lack of diversity on the runways today,” she says. “Very prestigious designers who I am actually close friends with aren’t using models of color right now. In a way, it’s like we’re back in the 70s.” For Johnson, her star power has given her a platform off the runway to champion the causes near and dear to her heart. “Being a model has made me who I am, and it’s afforded me the opportunity to speak out in a global way.” Not only does Johnson work for equality in fashion, she also gives her time and resources to Denver-based Global Down Syndrome Foundation – the cause that has brought her to the Mile High City. “My first cousin has Down syndrome and so I grew up very close to that world,” she explains. Today, she is joined by niece Natalie – a gorgeous young woman who also happens to have Down syndrome. “When my sister had Natalie, finding proper educational facilities was very challenging. This foundation has helped change that for so many.” Johnson has been involved in the cause for a number of years, particularly with the lauded Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show – a familiar scene for Johnson, albeit a far cry from the catwalks of Paris and Milan. “I can remember my first time walking down a runway, and I will tell you, Natalie did a much better job!” she laughs. “I have seen these children come alive and have so much confidence through this event. They’re just out there strutting their stuff and celebrating their beauty – both inside and out.” And while Johnson cites Natalie as one of her biggest inspirations, she also admits to a few other well-known style icons. “When I was living in New York City, building my modeling career, I worked part time at a shop called Jax. Jacqueline Kennedy was one of our biggest clients,” she reveals. “She was so lovely – always remembering me when we would run into one another. The cashmere sweaters and tees – she was a true icon.” Johnson also found inspiration in the late Lena Horne. “She was so glamorous and larger than life. And she paid attention to looking that way.” An example that Johnson has since followed. “My best style advice is to have some style. The way we look on the outside shows people that we care – about them and about ourselves. Have style – whatever that means to you – just put in the effort and show you care,” she finishes. These days, Beverly Johnson has parlayed her renowned modeling career into a global brand. Hair extensions, wigs, skincare, handbags, apparel, cosmetics and even reality television dot her legendary resume. A fate that stems back to an unknowing leap of faith more than 40 years ago. Some things, it would seem, are simply meant to be.

RAMEY CAULKINS EPITOMIZES CLASSIC style. The east coast transplant is a lauded interior designer, having put her stamp on projects such as Denver’s Park & Co. restaurant and a number of the city’s finest abodes. Naturally, when her design cohort and inspiration Tom Scheerer released his stunning new book, Tom Scheerer Decorates, Ramey decided that a celebration was in order. Based in New York, Scheerer trekked to Denver as the guest of honor at an intimate luncheon hosted in Ramey’s home, just south of Denver Country Club. Joined by a group of friends, family and design colleagues, Ramey Caulkins hosted a simple yet decidedly chic fête. The consummate hostess, she exemplified the notion that entertaining can be enjoyable. “A smaller gathering is better than a cattle call. Trying to entertain 10-14 people for lunch or dinner is much more intimate than hosting a large group,” she explains. True to her word, Ramey’s guest list included 14 designers, friends

and family members – both her mother-in-law, Ellie Caulkins and Tom Scheerer himself (cousin to the hostess’ husband Max as well as the guest of honor) were in attendance. An open area between the kitchen and family room served as a makeshift dining space, its bright, airy presence being the perfect spot for Ramey’s guests to gather as they enjoyed a lunch that the hostess personally prepared. Tables were well appointed and set with a charming eclectic flair – animal print chairs were mixed with black wood lacquer seating and monogrammed linen napkins offset unfussy yet stunning floral centerpieces. “I love to cook, but not everyone does,” she admits. “Set a beautiful, unexpected table and you can serve simple BLTs or get your fancy on and serve shrimp and grits.” Ramey’s lunch menu consisted of crustless sandwiches and a light yet delicious warm chicken quinoa spinach salad with pesto and pomegranates served with a crusty baguette. “Whatever it is that you choose to serve, take the time to plan ahead and do not prepare a meal that you will have to cook and will take you away from your guests.” After enjoying their meals, Ramey’s guests indulged in homemade cookies and coffee served, of course, in the hostess’ classic china. Proof that the most casual gatherings can be married with tradition and elegance. FOR MORE ENTERTAINING TIPS FROM RAMEY CAULKINS AND TO SEE THE COMPLETE GALLERY OF HER LUNCHEON WITH TOM SCHEERER, VISIT REIGNMAG.COM.

“Set a beautiful, unexpected table and you can serve simple BLTs or get your fancy on and serve shrimp and grits.”

RAMEY’S CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES From Alex Hitz’ My Beverly Hills Kitchen 2 sticks salted butter, softened 1 cup sugar 1cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups of flour 1/2 tsp. baking soda 2 1/2 tsp. salt 1 (11-12 oz.) bag bittersweet chocolate chips In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the wisk attachment on medium speed, cream the butter, sugar and brown sugar together until they are light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, and then the vanilla. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and the salt, and with the mixer on the lowest speed, add it 1/2 cup at a time to the creamed butter and sugar until the dry ingredients are exhausted and the dough is just combined. El Encanto FEW INNS ARE AS INNATELY GLAMOROUS AS EL ENCANTO. Having graced the Santa Barbara hillside for nearly 100 years, the hotel’s past is storied and star studded. And while it’s been more than a few decades since Clark Gable and Carole Lombard motored up from Los Angeles to escape the bright lights and big city, today’s jetsetters flock to the hideaway for the same serene luxury that once drew the darlings of Hollywood’s golden era. The boutique-style hotel sits on seven acres of lush landscape, each bungalow boasting its own private patio or garden. There’s a telescope on your terrace – apropos considering the sweeping Pacific Ocean views. Scented citrus trees and a Lily pond give the property its own distinct flavor – both literally and figuratively. Inside, the light, bright American Riviera décor welcomes guests in a manner more reminiscent of home than hotel, even offering thoughtful details like a monogrammed pillow on each traveler’s bed. As one might expect, the art is well curated, with works from the likes of Damien Hirst and Charles Arnoldi hanging inconspicuously on El Encanto’s walls. Naturally, the cuisine is indicative of the California coast and focuses on seafood, seasonal produce from the Santa Barbara region and herbs from the hotel’s own garden. And while the menu is modern, it also pays homage to El Encanto’s past. Executive Chef Patrice Martineau has recreated its famed “Floating Island” dessert. Having first appeared on the resort’s menu in 1920, the meringue and crème anglaise delicacy is beloved by locals and guests alike. In the spirit of all things bespoke, El Encanto even has its own Holstein cow whose milk is solely used to produce handmade cheeses for the hotel. El Encanto branded wine, fresh roasted coffee and homebrewed beer also appoint the impressive menu. For the spagoer, the resort’s boutique accommodations don’t disappoint. Much like El Encanto’s cuisine, the spa menu was created with the area’s environment in mind – think seaweed and vinotherapies. Try the Pinot and Cabernet Crush Sugar Scrub, which uses elements extracted from regional vines to drain toxins and stimulate circulation. For the outdoor enthusiast, the resort offers custom made electric bikes. The hotel’s restaurant will even prepare a picnic for a journey down to the Santa Barbara town center or a more secluded on-property jaunt. El Encanto 805.845.5800 elencanto.com

BACARA

With a jaw dropping location set atop a 78-acre coastal bluff, Bacara has earned its place as one of the resort-world’s favorites. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez mountains, the getaway is idyllic indeed. But the views are only the beginning for this spectacular retreat. For starters, there are three zero-edge saline swimming pools, two of which are beachside. For the privacy seeker, the twenty-six cabañas all look out onto the Pacific and all lay claim to personal waiter service. From there, a laundry list of activities one might hope for along America’s Rivera abounds. Think surfing the waves of the resort’s private two-mile beach, guided horseback tours, nature hikes, hitting the links at the renowned Sandpiper Golf Course or our favorites – vineyard tours and tasting or winemaker dinners. Also be sure to explore the resort’s 450-acre avocado grove. What’s more, little ones will feel perfectly at home at the Monarch Kid’s Club, where children 5-12 can participate in butterfly exploring, Spanish tile decorating, Miro-inspired art classes and even archeology day. The property, however, is an activity in and of itself. Spanish colonial villas all showcase thoughtful architecture and famed landscape architect Gary Beggs has adorned

the grounds with showy horticulture like Blue Hibiscus, Pink Powder Puff, Calla Lily, Strawberry Trees, Birds of Paradise and Blue Agave. Most notably is the presence of Millwood plants, the Monarch butterfly’s food source. Translation? Bacara is the home to thousands of the stunning creatures – a true sight to be seen. The on-property spa is one of the best appointed and ornamented of its kind. With 42,000 square feet of tranquility to call home, it consistently makes the top of the most prestigious “best of” lists. Relax in the saline spa pool, Swiss showers and hydrotherapy baths before you curl up next to the fireplace in the spa’s library. While there, try the Bacara Body Melt and Rooftop Sea Breeze Massage – neither of which is your typical treatment. For the foodie, Miro, named after Spanish artist John Miro, creates cuisine as exceptional as its atmosphere. While Pacific Ocean views certainly don’t disappoint, neither does the colorful décor, inspired by Miro’s paintings. Offering inventive European fare, Chef Johan Denizot’s signature dishes are accented by international flavors and locally sourced ingredients alike. If you’re in the mood for a nightcap, the restaurant’s lounge is full of charm and showcases an array of to-die-for tapas and craft cocktails. Or choose a bottle from Miro’s famed wine cellar. Featuring more than 12,000 bottles from 13 countries and 75 appellations, it has been deservingly awarded Wine Spectator’s Best of Excellence Award for ten years running. Hint – book a private dining experience in Miro’s cellar, which sits 40 and houses a large portion of the resort’s rare reds. For more casual fare, head to The Bistro. This oceanside café dishes up Italian Riviera gastronomy al fresco, on a spacious stone terrace. What’s more, the Chef de Cuisine is Chris Turano, of Food Network fame. Fashion-forward travelers will appreciate Bacara’s boutique, which features names atypical of a “hotel” shop. Labels like Diane von Furstenberg, Tom Ford, Velvet and Haute Hippie grace the racks with the chicest of presence. Bacara 805.968.2800

San Ysidro Ranch FEW RESORTS PARALLEL THE HISTORY, decadence and prestige of San Ysidro Ranch. Having welcomed its first guests in 1893, the property is perhaps California’s most historic and exclusive, its cornerstone being discreet pampering for discriminating travelers. Its location is the toniest along the Santa Barbara coastline, perfectly situated in the Montecito enclave. Over seventeen miles of private hiking trails and lush gardens surround San Ysidro, as does a hillside creek. Yet even more impressive is the property’s past. The ranch began as part of the King of Spain’s 1769 land title, later becoming a station for Franciscan monks. Eventually, the land was transformed into a sprawling citrus ranch, replete with an adobe house that today serves as San Ysidro’s focal point and main building. In 1930, actor Ronald Colman and Senator Alvin Carl Weingard acquired the ranch, building it into the haven it is today. Since then, San Ysidro Ranch has played host to a long line of icons – Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Groucho Marx and Winston Churchill all dotting San Ysidro’s dossier. Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were even married at the ranch and John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned there in 1953. Today, the Kennedy Cottage is one of San Ysidro’s most coveted, with its hand carved stone exterior, private hot tub, fine antiques and original artwork drawing in the most privileged of guests. Dining options at San Ysidro are equally ensconced in legend. The Stonehouse serves regional

cuisine in the space that once functioned as the ranch’s citrus packinghouse, with dishes like Classic Steak Diane flambéed tableside and Grilled California Quail whetting the appetite. Locals flock to Plow & Angel, San Ysidro’s more casual eatery, where mac-n-cheese and melt in your mouth ribs are the cuisine of choice. Following the notion of privacy that is quintessentially San Ysidro, spa treatments are offered in-cottage and range from facials to an expansive array of massage services. Try the Nirvana, where a careful combination of Rosemary, Lemongrass and Eucalyptus oil make the treatment aptly named. Those booking freestanding cottages have the option to bring their four-legged friends, as the ranch has been pet friendly since owner Alvin

Weingard’s famed family of dachshunds joined guests in the 30s. Of course, children are also welcomed visitors, with services like in-room baby proofing, ensuite baby monitors and bottle warmers, and pint-sized velour bathrobes and slippers offered by the ranch. San Ysidro also gifts each mini guest with a Beanie Baby upon arrival – a nod to current ranch owner Ty Warner.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT, THE BILTMORE SANTA BARBARA The Biltmore Santa Barbara has been one of the area’s favorites since 1927 and in the late 80s, became a coveted Four Seasons property. Located in Montecito along Monarch Beach, its setting is as stunning and serene as the property itself. With Spanish Colonial architecture set against brick walkways lit by dim gas lanterns and lush tropical gardens, it’s quite possibly the most romantic respite along the American Riviera. It comes as no surprise then, that the resort played host to the recent Bachelor nuptials. Yet reality romance aside, Four Seasons, Biltmore Santa Barbara is brimming with perfectly understated luxury.

A 10,000 square foot spa makes way for treatment rooms that include fireplaces, deep soaking tubs and French doors overlooking an English rose garden and the Pacific Ocean. Therapies like the signature Grape De Vine make use of the area's organic elements and offerings such as the Little Princess Facial and Junior VIP relaxing Massage make younger spagoers feel right at home. Two flawlessly designed swimming pools offer guests a place to unwind in the sun. The Resort Jungle Pool is surrounded by cascading greenery and even showcases underwater music while the Coral Casino Beach Club delivers a more festive scene. Dining is as indulgent as one might expect. Bella Vista serves perfectly paired farm Fresh California Italian cuisine like the Spaghetti Neri with frutti di marre, fresh herbs from Santa Barbara and chili flakes. Tydes delivers a more quintessential coastal experience, with a modern seafoodcentric menu. Try the Local Halibut with Red Abalone, Brandade, Tapenade, Turnip, Abalone Mushroom and Sea Grass. What’s more, the restaurant offers one of the most idyllic ocean views in the area, with an unparalleled panoramic picture of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands and the Santa Barbara coastline.

Canary Hotel IT’S NOT SURPRISING THAT MANY travelers want to stay in the center of the city’s hustle and bustle. After all, it’s brimming with bistros, colorful shopping, plenty of eclectic entertainment, an urban wine trail and postcard-like views. And for those who wish to be close to the action, there’s no better home away from home than Canary Hotel.

The inn itself, a Kimpton property, evokes the Moroccan flavor of its namesake Canary Islands. But the hotel’s original structure dates back to 1934, making for plenty of history, character and architectural interest. Head to the rooftop pool and terrace for a bird’s eye view of Santa Barbara where you can lounge in the sun or sip and nosh. Guests may also imbibe at Canary’s nightly hosted wine reception. Afterwards, check out the hotel’s Finch & Fork restaurant for locally sourced fare like market fresh fish tacos and artisanal flatbreads. A QUIET RESPITE NESTLED IN VERMONT’S STORIED COUNTRYSIDE WELCOMES GUESTS IN THE GRANDEST OF FASHIONS By Betsy Marr

ust down the road beyond the lake, through the gates and up the path lies a place so private that if you blink, you could miss it. Once the estate of famed author Sinclair Lewis, Twin Farms is a New England treasure. A place where reality ceases to exist and refinement is casual yet ever-apparent. A place that redefines the way one vacations and a place that marks itself forever on your soul. Steeped in romance, folklore and history, the 300 acre property begs to differ itself from hotels – even the most opulent among the pack. In a word, Twin Farms is an experience. A way of life that centers on fine dining, fine art and fine wines without the accompanying pretentions one might expect. It’s a bucolic hideaway that lends itself to relaxing, and nothing but. Not far from picturesque Woodstock, Twin Farms is tucked away in the rolling, wooded hills of Barnard; a town that boasts a welcomed retreat from the trappings of city life, yet in the chicest of manners. A Relais & Châteaux property, Twin Farms is heavily ensconced in its cuisine, with Executive Chef Nathan Rich at the kitchen’s helm. There are no menus – guests complete a culinary profile prior to arrival and meals are custom created based on preferences and seasonality, sourcing the freshest and finest ingredients. There are also no bar tabs or bills – the resort is all-inclusive – but disregard every preconceived notion the word conjures. A pedigreed sommelier pairs wines from the 26,000 bottle cellar at both lunch and dinner, but any request one might have, be it liquid or otherwise, is also available on a moment’s notice. As a prelude to each evening’s meal, guests gather in the intimate Barn Room for cocktails and fare around a crackling fire. Here, they converse and share stories of the day’s adventures – a perk of the experience is mixing with other wanderlust spirits

Adler’s touch is all over it, and his fans flock to the hotspot like it’s a Mecca of décor decadence. Eat at Mr. Parkers, where the gangster style steakhouse is transformed into a funky menagerie of decadent charm. Then, head to PSYC, the kitschy-meets-prepster spa where one is greeted not with cucumber water, but rather shots of cucumber vodka upon check in. There’s a croquet lawn with wrought iron fan chairs, a sunken living room, a retro fireplace in the lobby and a pool deck that’s on par with a scene out of a Slim Aarons photo. Honey, we’re home.

Located in the heart of downtown, Viceroy is a stone’s throw from the city’s shopping and restaurant havens, yet one really needn’t leave to bask in the lap of luxury. Wearstler has infused the hotel with a Hollywood regency meets mid-century modern feel and the result is comfortable glamour. Sleek spaces are met with pops of canary yellow and unexpected elements like ceramic Italian Greyhounds flanking the pool’s entrance. Reserve a private cabana for dinner, or dine in the ultra-luxe Citron restaurant. Before you leave, a trip to the hotel’s Estrella Spa is in order – try the Black Lava Body Treatment.

DESIGN PROWESS:

Martyn Lawrence Bullard We bow at the altar of Bullard, and you should too. The designer to Hollywood’s hottest names, this “Million Dollar Decorator” also counts the esteemed Jimmy Choo boutiques amongst his accolades. His recent tome, Live, Love & Decorate graces the jet set’s coffee tables with as much flair as the commanding designer himself and his work at the iconic Colony Palms is, well, just that.

WHY WE LOVE IT

800.557.2187 COLONYPALMSHOTEL.COM

The history alone is enough to make us call the inn a favorite, and the design savvy sends it over the top. Originally dubbed The Colonial House, the hotel was owned by notorious mobster Al Wertheimer, a member of The Purple Gang. With a legendary underground speakeasy and brothel, which was entered via a secret staircase behind a pantry cupboard, the hotel served as a private club for Wertheimer and his gambling pals. In the 40s, it took on new ownership, and a new name. Hollywood royals Robert and Andrea Leads Howard bought the property, calling it The Howard Manor and turning it into the see and be seen playground for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Howard Hughes, Ronald Reagan, Kirk Douglas and Zsa Zsa Gabor. But in 2007, The Colony Palms was reborn with a whole new swagger, under the design direction of Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Bullard brought the hotel back to its glory days with Moroccan and Spanish influences, plenty of color and a dash of glamour. Check out the wellregarded Purple Gang restaurant, an homage to the place’s original owner. Whether you go for the décor or the dining, you’ll win.

ANY HOME RENOVATION COMES WITH its unique challenges – messes, noise, endless change orders and a stream of professionals invading your once private space. But for Kelle and Shawn, a professional couple with two beloved Golden Retrievers, their renovation was grand not only in size but also in scope. Every room within their expansive home was reinvented – from flooring to cabinetry, bathrooms, staircases, closets, mantels, lighting and fixtures, plus furnishings and décor. Even more, the ambitious pair undertook extensive exterior and landscaping renovations, quite literally leaving no stone unturned. “We wanted to create a contemporary space that serves as our sanctuary- warm and elegant, with a bit of humor and playfulness reflected in the pieces of art we collect,” Kelle explains. “We also wanted to enhance the property to match the grandness of the structure and the elevated lot on which it sits.” Enhance they did. From the jetted clawfoot tub in the master bathroom to the Italian honed marble island in the kitchen, the couple created a contemporary home brimming with thoughtful,

traditional details. Light fixtures with dramatic intrigue, unexpected window treatments and whimsical wallpaper gave the respite character and charm. Yet as artists, there are two distinct spaces that speak to the homeowner’s hearts. “My art studio was transformed into an inspirational space with views of the Front Range and windows with perfect natural light,” Kelle shares. A celebrated calligrapher and the design phenom behind Designsgirl, her accolades include work with Crane & Company and Bella Figura in additon to producing art magazine Paperswell. Yet for Shawn, another special piece stands out as the home’s crowning jewel. In the downstairs parlor, a Model G Steinway designed by Dakota Jackson in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the piano, sits proudly as the room’s centerpiece. With art deco lines blending into the classical curves of a grand piano, this instrument- number 10 of 300- is a blend of the master piano makers from Hamberg and New York City, both in appearance and sound. “Playing this masterpiece is a thrill. For a pianist and a music lover, a night with dim lights and a fire dancing off the white Italian marble adds a special ambiance to the time we share together in this room,” he tells us. An undertaking indeed, the couple’s home renovation was well worth the result. As artists and golf lovers, their serene setting, where beautiful light streams into each room amongst a breathtaking landscape of mountains, pristine golf course and Ponderosa pines, is perfectly suited. “On the day that we completed the remodeling, there was no noise. No dust. No nonfamily members floating through the house. No joint compound stuck in our Golden Retrievers’ fur. No drywall pieces to pry from our younger Retriever’s extraordinarily cavernous and curious mouth. It was joyous. It is a beautiful transformation of which we are very proud.” ➺

JUST DANCE The Colorado Ballet finds a new home in Denver’s Santa Fe Arts District

072

REIGN • SPRING 2014

D

enver has long been labeled a sports town. An outdoor paradise. A foodie’s haven. Soon, we’ll even be setting the bar for public transportation with the revamped Union Station becoming the envy of cities worldwide. Yet what so many overlook is that Colorado is also an international leader in the arts, staking claim to the second largest performing arts complex in the nation. In fact, unlike many of our neighbors who far outnumber us in size, Denver boasts the “big four” – the opera, the symphony, a performing arts center and of course, the Ballet. Yet unlike so many of Colorado’s for-profit, burgeoning entertainment options – Vail Resorts and the Denver Broncos among them – The Colorado Ballet, The Colorado Symphony and the Central City Opera all exist on the support of a dwindling population, and even less corporate support. When first asked to join the Board of Trustees at The Colorado Ballet, it was a reminder of a special childhood tradition. The night when the family got dressed up, bundled in warm clothes

and drove downtown to watch the magical Nutcracker. Seeing the Sugar Plum fairy dance in her sparkling costume, floating through the snowflake-filled scenes. Tchaikovsky’s thrilling battles between the toy soldiers and the mischievous mice. However, not until we were inside the boardroom did we understand the effort, financial commitment and time required to execute such a production. During the economic crash of 2008, the Ballet barely stayed alive. A major performance was cut and dedicated employees took furloughs. Yet impressively, The Colorado Ballet never closed its doors to the more than 30 talented dancers, students and dance lovers who call the space home. A home that had made its mark in downtown Denver, amidst the walls of a rented space for twenty years. Yet on the heels of the new $45 million building for the Houston Ballet and the newly renovated $25 million historic landmark of the Kansas City Ballet, one thing became clear. Colorado – a state that proudly sets the bar for entertainment, outdoor activities and athletics – needed to find its beloved Ballet a proper new home. Late last year, a plan was set in motion. The Colorado Ballet acquired a 100-year old former sewing machine distribution shop off of Santa Fe Drive for $1.3 million. It would take an additional $5 million to clean and renovate the 30,000 square foot building so that it could house multiple ballet studios, a black box theatre and a place to support an 800-student academy. However, to get the building in full operating condition, a capital campaign was necessary. It hasn’t been easy. In December, we collectively sent out an email to our friends. A gentle nudge that Colorado Gives Day was approaching, and, as luck would have it, tickets to The Nutcracker were also on sale. One bluntly asked, “No offense, but why does the Ballet need money? There are so many causes in Denver who tend to the homeless or help people suffering with cancer.” True. There are more charities per capita in Colorado than any other city in the United States. And all of them promote critically important causes. But all too often the Ballet is pigeonholed into “just an arts organization.” We believe it is much more. With Artistic Director Gil Boggs at the helm, The Colorado Ballet is providing support to the Santa Fe Arts District – a neighborhood it won’t even occupy until this summer – in every way they can. The Ballet is even going so far as building out a wellness

platform for community members. What’s more, The Academy, an important arm of the Ballet, does more than just reach school age children and adults who take dance classes. Its “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself Dance Class” is the only one of its kind and is specifically tailored to children with Down syndrome. Envision both little boys and little girls in pink and blue tutus and leotards, plié-ing as an enthusiastic instructor encourages them. The ballet instructor is actually a physical therapist that has been educated to modify her guidance to this precious group. With this single class, The Colorado Ballet, in conjunction with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, has become a national role model in dance therapies. And then there are the evocative performances that extend beyond the traditional. Last spring The Colorado Ballet chose the performance Light/

The Holocaust & Humanity Project, a tragic and emotional contemporary act, choreographed by Austin’s Stephen Hills. Boggs said it was a difficult endeavor for the dancers, as they had to “put themselves in the shoes of those who were subjugated.” The performance engaged more than 100 nonprofits and was applauded by dozens of corporate and city sponsors. The opening night was co-chaired by Denver Mayor Hancock and Colorado Governor Hickenlooper. All proof positive that The Colorado Ballet has found its much-deserved home. AUNA JORNAYVAZ AND MONICA OWENS BOTH SIT ON THE COLORADO BALLET’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES. AUNA IS A GRADUATE STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DENVER. MONICA IS THE PRINCIPAL OWNER OF OWENS PUBLIC AFFAIRS. DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES OF COLORADO Cara Mia Medical Day Spa Dermatology Associates of Colorado 9570 Kingston Court, Suite 100 Englewood, Colorado 80112

The skin is your body’s largest organ against the outside world. You take it with you everywhere you go – out in the sun, into the pool, up to the crisp mountain air. And it’s as unique as you are. “That’s why our dermatologic care is completely individualized,” says Dr. Leslie Capin, founder of Cara Mia Medical Day Spa & Dermatology Associates of Colorado. “Every patient is different, so every skin care program is different. Nothing is cookbook.” Her team of highly experienced, board certified providers offers a comprehensive array of dermatologic expertise: preventive to surgical, pediatric to geriatric, cosmetic to medical. “It’s unusual for a clinic to have everything under one roof,” emphasizes Dr. Capin, whose staff even includes a dermatopathologist, who microscopically examines skin samples on site. “A patient who comes in for a total body skin check might also have questions about cosmetic laser services. We can cover both in the same visit.” “We’re able to serve patients-and their families-throughout their entire lives.” While Colorado’s mile high elevation delivers beautiful weather and incredible sporting opportunities, it also comes with the increased risks of sun exposure. Dr. Capin confirms the sobering reality: “our practice sees and average of four malignant melanomas each week.” The good news is that skin cancer, when detected early, is highly treatable. “With increased awareness and thorough, head to toe screenings, we are catching and curing it much earlier,” states the doctor. “If cancer is diagnosed we offer Mohs micrographic surgery. It’s the gold standard treatment, with a 99 percent cure rate and the lowest possibility of recurrence.” Dermatology Associates of Colorado is proud to deliver uncommonly convenient office hours Monday-Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturdays 8 am to noon. In addition, doctors provide their personal cell phone numbers to any patient that has undergone a procedure. “We go to great lengths to be as available as possible,” explains Dr. Capin. “If patients have an urgent concern, we want them to be able to reach us 24/7 without the hassle of an answering service. Patients are very appreciative of this gesture and, at the same time, incredibly respectful of our time.” “We want patients to know that we’re really here for them.”

tells us. “Whether a customer requests a private shopping experience outside of our normal business hours or additional alterations to a dress that was purchased at the store, we will do what we can to accommodate her.”

Andrea Resnick and Heather Seeley believe that fashion should be fun. “Dressing is an endeavor that women take on every day. It is intended to be playful and a form of creative expression,” Seeley, Director of Boulder’s chic new Willow boutique explains.

Both CU grads, Resnick has a background in photography and a longtime love of fashion while Seeley’s former path includes a mix of all things design – graphics, florals, merchandising and of course, fashion. This eclectic blend of artistic sensibilities has helped make Willow the inventive, fashion-forward boutique it is today.

Willow, which began as the pursuit of New York City transplant Andrea Resnick, is changing the way Colorado ladies think about fashion. The Boulder shop offers a wide array of fine jewelry, leather goods and accessories from both established and emerging designers. A destination for style rooted in modern sophistication, Willow encourages customers to get creative with fashion. “We work diligently to make our customers feel comfortable coming into the store and shopping on their own or engaging a member of the sales team for assistance,” Resnick attests. “We’re filling a gap in Boulder by brining in new designers. We’re also offering the same level of service that we’d personally want to receive when shopping.”

What’s more, the Willow team also believes in giving back and uses its talents to help women who are in less fortunate positions. “Fashion can transform you. We provide a palette of pieces that allow women to be creative in their daily dress, be it work or play,” both Resnick and Seeley agree.

Brands like Genetic, Tibi, Rachel Zoe and L.A.M.B. sit perfectly alongside niche labels like Clare Vivier, Whetherly and Reese & Riley. With a well-curated collection of designers and styles that are both wearable and interesting, at Willow, attention to detail is key. Au Revoir

May you dip your toes in the sand on shores far away. May you escape to the sun but return to the snow. May you collect experiences, not extravagances. May you have adventures, not ordeals. May you live for today, plan for tomorrow and revel in tonight. May you get wildly lost in a place that you ardently love. And above all, may you fly with brave wings.
