Caving in When each room of a home has its own function and role to play, it can be difficult to find a space where you just want to showcase all your miscellaneous possessions. Enter the “man cave.”

This room is essentially the one room where a man can arrange the space however he likes. Whether in an attic, basement, or spare room, the man cave can be a great place to hold all your recreational activities and prized possessions.

Do you have a series of signed sports memorabilia, whiskey or wine collection or an assortment of vintage comic books? These displays can unapologetically be shown in the man cave.

According to Torrado, these are must-have pieces to have in a man cave: • a comfortable lounge chair or recliner; • a large television set to watch movies and sports, especially the Super Bowl; • a mini bar and refrigerator; • a poker table, pool table, dartboard or foosball table for recreation;

• extra seating and barstools; and • personal prized possessions displayed on a wall, shelf or bookcase.

These are examples of what one can typically find in a man cave, because of the masculine tone they set. However, this space is heavily dependent on the interest of the person. Some of these spaces can look like sports bars, with fully installed bar tables and shelves to hold alcohol. Other spaces can look like an after-hours office, complete with spacious desks and computers for work. Whichever design is chosen, the room at its core should be a reflection of the person’s true interests.

go for darker colors like maroon, Navy blue, gray, brown and black.

However, light-colored accents and trims can add a more regal and upmarket effect, such as gold linings along table or white shelves suspended on the wall.

Lighting can warm and dim so that it will not compete with light coming from electronic devices, like TV screens.

And not to worry — despite the name, anyone of any gender can have their own cave.

“It’s your room in the house that you have complete control on how you decorate it,” Torrado said. p

Take a shine to it Metallic colors and objects can bring a new dimension of style to a home — as long as there is good lighting to accompany it.

Naturally, metallics can be found mostly in the kitchen, bathroom and anywhere with running water. Kitchens have pots and pans that can be aligned neatly on a counter to make it part of a design. Sinks have metallic sheens in their basins and faucets.

Metallics can also be found in metal rails and gutters outside.

The shiny metal look is often associated with utility and building, but it can also be used as accents throughout the home.

“Metallics look great just about anywhere,” said Alan Torrado, event and design coordinator. “The right amount of metallic can give any space some instant glamour.

When used together, metallics are neutral and can be worked into any color scheme.”

Apart from aesthetics, As the openings of home, doors and windows need extra attention as they serve security and energysaving roles for the residents.

Basic maintenance and a routine checkup on these ports of entry can go a long way to make them last longer. Certified home inspector Richard Ulloa, who does business as Guam Home Inspections, said that it is a good practice to lubricate locks, hingers and rollers as needed.

“Check all windows and doors to make sure they open and close properly, and that all the locks work,” Ulloa said.

Make sure that there are no obstructions between these openings, either, he added, as they are also emergency escape paths in the event something goes wrong in the home. Keeping the pathways

clear will also prevent the doors and windows from running into or getting stuck on solid objects, which will make it difficult to open and close them.

Aside from maintenance, it is also important to consider how the doors and windows can save you money on your next power bill. Although they mostly seal the inside from the outside, there are small slivers and cracks in between where air can escape. These can be patched up with caulk, weather strips or insulated mats for the bottom of the door.

Different types of windows and doors are evaluated by their energy performance rating, and depending on where you live, certain types of materials make better doors than others. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends looking out

“Look for a low (solar heat gain coefficient) in a climate that mainly requires cooling and a high SHGC in a climate that requires heating,” according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The SHGC rating can be found on the Energy Star label.

For Guam, that means doors and windows that have low SHGC ratings are ideal energy savers.

Fiberglass doors work well in warmer climates, while glass does poorly to prevent heat from entering the home. For windows, having an awning or a shade screen can reduce the amount of heat that comes in. p

Brownie points Earthy. Natural. Grounded.

These words may come to mind when thinking about the themes and tones that the color brown invokes.

Because this color can be found almost anywhere outdoors, it can be easy to overlook. This gives it a subtle element when used in the home, and often serves a complimentary role to other colors. But with some design choices, brown can also be the main attraction.

“It’s a comforting color, but one has to be careful to choose the

proper shade of brown. The wrong shade can make a room feel heavy, dull and basic,” said Alan Torrado, event and design consultant.

Brown can give off a calm and relaxing tone. It isn’t loud and it does not overpower other elements of the room. That is why brown is a great color to paint bedroom walls or any space where one can relax and recharge, Torrado said.

Different shades of brown can make it even more appealing. For lighter, airy rooms, a lighter shade of brown would work nicely. Darker shades are best used on furniture

pieces, such as the natural color of the wood on coffee tables and chairs. Brown moldings fixed on the top corner of walls or at the midsection can make a home feel more traditional.

“A nice supple leather sofa would be a perfect piece of brown furniture to own,” Torrado said.

“It makes a solid statement of comfort and stability. Pair that up with ivory-colored walls and you would have a contemporary and comforting vibe.”

Brown is a neutral color, so it can work well with most colors.

But brighter colors often make a great pairing with brown. A brown bookcase and shelf would look more appealing with yellow accents throughout.

Brown wooden floors enhances the blues and whites of curtains. Even a pink throw pillow can complement a brown sofa. To keep in line with the earthy aesthetic, something as simple as potted soil for indoor plants can also add a natural flavor to a home. A healthy balance of brown and a light color can bring a rustic theme to a space. p
