Get your pistons firing The garage is likely to be the messiest part of a home, so the best way to decorate this space has a lot to do with organization.

either avoid sun damage or to keep them clean. When not housing a vehicle, garages are also used to work on projects that require sawing, hammering, or other construction-related activities.

Garages have decent space for this type of work.

If a workstation is not the style of a homeowner, the garage

would then be used to store items a family no longer use but don’t want to throw away just yet. Boxes of miscellaneous items can be strewn across shelves or on the floor, with no real pattern or style of organization.

It is important to keep the garage’s primary use in mind when decorating. Essentially, the

decoration should not hinder the function of the space. When used as a workstation, for example, decorating should be done in a way that doesn’t reduce the size of the space. A cork board to hang various tools on a wall can add a subtle and effective design to the space.

A metal rack can be used to hold spare tires or lay down lumber.

A storage garage has more flexibility with decorating, although tidiness should still remain at the forefront. Different colored packaging boxes can help organize different types of items, while adding personality to the space. Storage should be kept to the sides to clear walkways. If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, it is best to keep storage items above ground, like on a shelf or hanging cabinet.

The Home Depot recommended the following storage methods: • Storage cabinets: Make sure you have multiple cabinets of different dimensions to store items of various lengths and widths.

• Workbenches: Use these to store tools and materials that you need periodically.

• Storage bins: Use clear totes and storage bins to make it easier to see what is in them. Open baskets can store items that won’t be bothered by dust or dirt accumulation.

• Wall racks and panels: Hang garden tools, rakes, hoses and ladders for a more organized look p

Up to speed Even when your home’s infrastructure is functioning as it should, it is good practice to check in on each component periodically to ensure they stay in good shape.

Visual checks on electrical areas, plumbing pipes, appliances and other aspects of a home are sometimes all one needs to do for maintenance. Any signs of leaking, overheating or rusting are best caught early, as the damage can worsen over time.

“As much as possible, it’s better to prevent something from happening than to wait for it to happen and you have to call someone about it,” said Appliance Specialist Guam owner Salvador “Buddy” Haber.

The first rule for a do-it-yourself maintenance is to keep your area

clean, Haber said. Get rid of any dust accumulation with a damp cloth. Make sure that appliances have enough “breathing room” to operate and they are stored in spaces suitable for them.

Haber also recommended a periodic cleaning of washers, dryers and refrigerators — the three big white goods in a home. Some washers and dryers have a selfcleaning option, but it is also better to clean them manually, like wiping down the barrels and removing lint buildup or solid objects like coins. Refrigerators occasionally experience ice buildup. If this is the case, clear excessive ice away from the cooling vent and ensure the door can close properly.

“It’s not easy to throw away

white goods when they don’t work anymore, so try to make them last as long as possible,” Haber said.

For other maintenance checks, certified professional inspector and owner of Guam Home Inspections Richard Ulloa shared some tips for various parts of the home: Roofs: Water blast the surface to remove buildup. After surface cleaning, allow some time to dry before applying a roof coating to seal the concrete surface. Roof coating helps seal the concrete roof and keeps it from absorbing moisture that can cause rusting of the internal rebars, which will eventually lead to leaks and cracks.

Driveways and walkways: Buildup on exterior walking surfaces is very slippery and can

cause slips and falls, so water blast the surface as needed.

Doors and windows: Check all windows and doors to make sure they open and close properly and that all the locks work. Lubricate locks, hinges and rollers as needed.

Electrical: Check all light switches and outlets to make sure they are not loose or broken. Test all ground-fault circuit interrupter outlets to make sure they are working.

Plumbing: Check all valves and plumbing fixtures for leaks. Even small drips will increase your monthly water bills. Check faucet aerators for clogs from hard water deposits. p

That’s why framed pictures are often found in the average home — either standing on an end table or mantle or hung on a wall. For a more artistic approach, some people may choose to hang a collection of pictures on a wall, making their very own art gallery. It’s a personal touch that— when arranged pleasingly — can make a creative accent wall with a story to tell.

Piecing together the perfect set of photos and drawings takes time, so it’s best not to rush it. The first thing to consider is what feeling or tone the gallery wall will convey.

Positivity and happy memories will tend to have brighter colors locked in frames. For a more somber or sophisticated approach, gray scale or subtle shades of colors can add maturity to a space.

Choosing the right frames, or

not having any frames at all, is another factor. Frames with solid colors help define lines and shapes, and that can make alignment easier to manage. It is important to remember that the focus should be on the photos and artwork, so avoid picture frames that are too intricate or do not share the same color scheme as the gallery set.

Before hanging the pictures, lay your art gallery out on the floor.

This will make it easier to figure out the overall shape of your gallery wall, and which photos or artwork go well together. Some gallery walls can be orderly and spaced out evenly, while others can have

pictures of different orientations. At the end of the day, the best style for a home is one that represents the homeowner.

The method to hang the pictures up depends on how hard you are willing to work. Hammering small nails on a wall is a sturdy option, but it will leave a lot of holes in the wall. For concrete homes, this can get complicated. Adhesive hooks will do less damage on the home, but there is a limit to how much weight each hook can carry. Smaller pictures are more ideal for adhesive hooks, while large sets may require the support of hammered nails or drilled-in hooks. p

In the pink There aren’t other colors like pink that can almost instantly add gentleness, sweetness and romanticism to a space, even as an accent.

Often feminine in appearance, the color pink has an atmosphere of positivity and youth. This color

is seen in whimsical settings or in desserts, like icing and ice cream.

Pink flowers also come to mind.

But on a deeper level, pink can have more mature qualities, too.

“The use of pink can represent hope, empowerment and confidence,” said Austin Grant,

owner of Grey by Grant. “It is also the color that is mainly used for breast cancer awareness campaigns.”

Pink can be incorporated in any part of a home, although it is generally a bold decision to make, Grant said. If used too much, pink can make an area look childish,

even if that was not the intention.

When designing, he said that it is best to pair pink with neutral colors, such as white, gray or nude.

recommend displaying pink garden roses in your kitchen in living room. Perhaps, you might want to place a nicely potted bougainvillea, or put tai nobio, in your kitchen or windowsill,” he said.

For the more daring home designers, pink can be paired with black or blue for some dramatic edge. And while pink is mainly

associated with feminine concepts, men should not be afraid to add a little pink to their home style.

“Although pink can be considered feminine, it can be a nice touch in a masculine or gender-neutral living space. This can be done by hanging artwork in your living room. I have seen eye-catching abstract designs that make a statement,” Grant said.

For outdoor use, pink will work great in gardens and patios as

accents, he said. This can be done by painting a wooden bench or a garden fence. It is important to keep in mind that there are naturally appearing colors outdoors, and that pink should not clash with them.

Green grass, leaves and trees, for example, are not easily changeable, so try to find different shades of pink that go with those colors. p
