NE1 HAPPENINGS

NE1’s Dragon Boat Race roars back to the Tyne! MAKING ITS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE TYNE, NE1’S DRAGON BOAT RACE WILL BE BRINGING A WHOLE HOST OF FESTIVITIES TO THE QUAYSIDE ON SATURDAY 2ND OCTOBER! AFTER 2019’S EPIC RACE DAY, THE FIRST ON THE RIVER FOR MANY YEARS, THE EVENT PROMISES TO BE EVEN BIGGER AND BETTER THIS YEAR AFTER ITS ENFORCED ABSENCE IN 2020.

can over the distance to be in with a chance of winning a cash prize. Are you the fastest rower on the Quayside? Get strapped in and give it a go! On Saturday 2 October, up to 15 Dragon Boats will take to the Tyne to race between the iconic Tyne Bridge and Millennium Bridge, with various heats throughout the day. The race is always a stunning spectacle, each boat holding between 11 and 16 rowers, with a drummer on each to keep the teams in time, and add to the atmosphere! Who will be racing the boats we hear you shout? Well, it could be you! The Dragon Boat Race is open for anyone to enter and we’re encouraging teams of friends, work-mates, corporate groups, and families to take to the water in search of incredible thrills and maybe even some race winning glory. By getting involved you’ll also be raising money for charity, with profits going to Tiny Lives and the Children’s Heart Foundation. So, if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind experience and for more information on how to enter, email atlanticdream17@gmail.com. Who knows, your team could be crowned Dragon Boat champions 2021!

Fun for everyone!

We’ve got heaps of fun activities going down on the Quayside for you to enjoy all day, even if you’re not getting into a Dragon Boat. So feel free to head down to the river and marvel at this stunning spectacle whilst getting swept up in the excitement of it all and the beating of the drums!

WEIGHT-LIFTING CHALLENGE

These weights aren’t going to be the ones you find in the gym, oh no, we’re setting up what’s called a thunder lift. Basically there’s one oversized handle on the side of a rather large object, like a car, and all you’ve got to do is lift it six inches off the ground. It’s a lot harder than it sounds - have you got what it takes?

LIMBO DANCING COMPETITION

How low can you go? That’s right, if tests of strength aren’t your thing, then you can show us what you’ve got in the limbo dancing competition! The little ones might have an unfair advantage on this one though...

FACE PAINTING AND CRAFTS

Everything is more fun with face paint! All day long we’ll have a number of tables running arts and crafts activities as well as giant garden games such as draughts to get the whole family involved in. So, bring your family and friends down as there’s something for everyone at this one-of-a-kind event!

Race organiser Phil Pugh is someone who’s passionate about boating and raising money for charity. He helped organise the first Dragon Boat Race alongside NE1 in 2019, which also happened to be the same year he rowed the Atlantic for charity! We checked in with Phil to find out more about this incredibly unique event. What's the inspiration behind the race? It’s something fun and different to encourage people to donate and raise money for these incredible charities. Charity fundraising is very difficult these days so getting people together for a real stand out event like this really helps. Also, it’s great getting to involve Newcastle’s sizable Chinese community, because of course that’s where Dragon Boats originally come from. Do you need any boating experience to get involved? Not at all, just a willingness to be a part of a team, listen to the drummer’s beat and have fun! Finally, why should people get involved? It’s fun, it’s for a great cause and it’s as good as going to the gym. Not only for your physical fitness, but for your mental health too. It’s an event that really showcases the heart of Newcastle - it brings people together and allows them to socialise in a completely different environment to their usual. I can’t wait to see it all come together!

Food & Drink I SCREAM FOR PIZZA

NE1 REVIEWS:

Say hello to Scream For Pizza's new Quayside concept!

pickles. Trust us when we say, we’re still processing this endorphin-inducing eating experience. Our lack of self-control kicks in and we duly head back in for a secondserving and this time, we tackle their ‘Brooklyn's Finest’. It’s an incredible slice that features slow-cooked marinara sauce, creamy dollops of mozzarella, double pepperoni slices and lashings of garlic oil before being topped with fresh parmesan, honey and fresh basil. Light, airy and oh-so indulgent, this triangular trifecta of perfection will have you oohing and aahing until the very last bite. The team at Scream have really gone overboard when it comes to serving up special food and it’s clearly evident with their New York bodega breakfast roll, Scream’s ‘Top Knot’ garlic dough balls and oh-so incredible ‘Screamies’. As you all know, we’re suckers for

AN ALL-STAR NAME WHEN IT COMES TO SERVING UP INCREDIBLE PIZZA SLICES TO COUNTLESS HUNGRY PATRONS ACROSS THE NORTH EAST, LOCAL FOODIE LEGENDS SCREAM FOR PIZZA HAVE LANDED ON THE QUAYSIDE WITH A COOL NEW CONCEPT SERVING SLICES AND ICES! NE1 headed along to Three Indian Kings House for a peek in their slice house and most importantly, to sample their sensational menu... Standing opposite the waterfront and boasting beautiful panoramic views of the Quayside, I Scream for Pizza’s enticingly cool and rustic interior shines nearly as bright as the 20” delights on offer. There’s a multitude of soft reds, vibrant yellows and burnt oranges littered across the walls, whereas the vibrant, 60s diner-style menu hanging above the counter adds a brilliant dose of vibrancy and colour to proceedings.

Having taken our Grand Designs hat off, we quickly moved to the counter to be greeted with humongous 20” pizzas bubbling away in plain view. It's safe to say that the ‘Texas Flyer’ (£5) and ‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ (£3.50) immediately caught our eye. The ‘Texas Flyer’ is a special Scream for Pizza creation that’s new for their NE1 base. The team loaded this showstopper with sweet Texan BBQ sauce, gooey fior di latte mozzarella, slowcooked brisket, freshly chopped red onion and green peppers before being topped with a hearty dollop of ranch dressing and a littering of buttered

SIMON AMSTELL: SPIRIT HOLE 2 OCTOBER

KENTON COOL: EVEREST THE COOL WAY 27 SEPTEMBER

Calling all thrill-seekers! This September, our chums at Tyne Theatre are welcoming one of the world’s most successful and revered climbers to the Toon. Kenton Cool is an ice cold dude and an icon in the mountaineering scene. He holds the British record for Everest ascents (an unbelievable 14 times!) and he’s also the only person in the world to have summited Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse in one season (we’re huffing and puffing just walking from Central Station to NE1 towers on Dean Street!). In Everest the Cool Way, Kenton will be describing his climbing career as he details the unheard tales from Everest and reveals all about the trials and tribulations of crossing the jungles of Bolivia in the midst of summer. tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

Fancy chuckling the night away to some off-kilter, abject comedy from a true comedy giant? Lucky for you, our friends at Tyne Theatre & Opera House are welcoming the truly unique Simon Amstell to the Toon for a special evening of critically acclaimed humour on his sell-out tour, Spirit Hole. Taking aim at social norms and gently mocking them until they seem utterly absurd, Simon’s new tour has been dubbed a blissful and sensational exploration of love, sex, shame, mushrooms and everything else in between. If you yearn for a night of unprecedented joy and laughter, book now and avoid that deep, dark hole of FOMO. tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

Well, La Flor sets itself apart from its predecessors by working against the expectation of a linear narrative, instead, Llinás gives us six unique stories that share nothing in common other than inclusion of the same four actors. You could be knee-deep in a musical sing-song in one saga and then hiding behind your hands as a B-movie horror sweeps across the screen - that’s the beauty of it! Tickets start from £10.75 - an unbelievable deal considering it’s six flicks rolled into one big evening of epic cinema! tynesidecinema.co.uk

On this Day TYNE THEATRE AND OPERA HOUSE OPENS! 23 SEPTEMBER 1867

Let's take a cultural leap back in time to yesteryear and celebrate the special moment one of Newcastle’s most iconic buildings, the Tyne Theatre and Opera House opened its doors to the public for the very first time! This historic building has stood on Westgate Road for an incredible 154 years now, going through many evolutions in its celebrated history. Tyne Theatre and Opera House was designed and opened by William Parnell in 1867, on behalf of politician and industrialist Joseph Cowen. When the doors first swung open in September of that year, the people of Newcastle were buzzing with excitement over the prospect of affordable live entertainment arriving into the city. The theatre was originally built to house a production company managed by George Stanley, but the cutting-edge design and opulent nature of the theatre meant that record numbers flocked to the city for a ticket in the auditorium. When the doors first flung open, TT & OH welcomed an eclectic variety of locally produced entertainment to the venue such as drama, opera, musical spectacles and pantomimes. Fast-forward to the present day and this gob-smackingly beautiful building is still as vital to the region as it was back then. Take a look at the world-class productions arriving to the stage this autumn and experience for yourself the unique aura of this incredible venue! tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

Featuring banging tunes, dazzling dance routines, balloon modelling and that extra special bit of sparkle, Redcoat is a tale inspired by Lewis’ experience as a Redcoat living in Bognor Regis as he guides us through the trials and tribulations of working as an entertainer at a holiday camp. First performed as part of Live Theatre’s Elevator Festival in 2020, Redcoat returns for its larger than life UK premiere - be there for its string of exclusive dates… live.org.uk

A scorching new production of one of the most popular operas ever written will take theatre-goers deep into a world where desire and hot-blooded passion reign supreme at the Theatre Royal this winter. The fiery story of Carmen zooms into the Toon to add some heat to the winter weather, and this thrilling production depicts the story of (you guessed it!) Carmen - a strong woman surviving in a poor frontier town, manipulating and seducing the men who try to control her. Things soon change when one man’s obsession turns into wild jealousy and the consequences are shocking. Penned 150 years ago, themes of femininity, desire, violence and toxic masculinity resonate now more than ever in this incredible bit of theatre. Tickets are flying out for this one - make sure you see it live in the Toon! theatreroyal.co.uk
