Let’s play the system: fashion needs us di SANDRA RONDINI “Milan l’è sempre Milan” recita un vecchio detto popolare che la dice lunga su quanto i milanesi amino la loro città. I milanesi magari sì, ma le loro istituzioni, a cominciare dal Sindaco e dagli assessori fino ad arrivare agli stilisti che non sanno fare sistema, agli uffici di public relations che non sanno selezionare con criterio ospiti e stampa, fino al nuovo Consiglio Direttivo della Camera, no di certo. Spiace dirlo, ma quando già si è assediati all’esterno da altre fashion week come New York e Parigi, spinte dai poteri forti della moda che si permettono di decidere addirittura le date dei calendari, che senso ha, invece di rispondere all’assalto, iniziare addirittura a combattersi a vicenda all’interno della fortezza in cui si è trovato riparo? Ci siamo davvero ridotti al “mors tua vita mea?”. Già abbiamo perso il primato di quella grandiosa fiera del tessile che era “Milano Unica”, che vantava la presenza dei più valenti tessutai mondiali, in maggioranza italiani, che, causa disorganizzazione e burocrazia locale, si sono spostati in massa a Parigi, alla fiera “Premiere Vision”, dove sono, comunque, quelli che vendono di più, ma certo, le spese di trasferta incidono e poi che peccato questo “nemo propheta in patria”. Cosa sta succedendo a Milano, un tempo Capitale mondiale della moda e oggi ridotta al rango di un intermezzo tra le fashion week di Londra e quella di Parigi? New York sfila sempre per prima, con la stampa che conta ben schierata in gran parata e lì convocata e manovrata da poteri non proprio tanto occulti, anzi, ben noti a tutti. A cominciare da certe “sacerdotesse” della moda col potere di creare, ma anche distruggere intere carriere. Perché mai un ristretto gruppo di persone possegga tutto questo potere non è ben chiaro, oppure, come accade in politica, qualcuno di più potente di loro, li ha messi in quella posizione per rianimare la fashion week newyorkese, che languiva in un angolo, e promuovere Parigi come Mecca della moda solo per arginare lo strapotere di Milano. Il calendario milanese sembra quasi scritto da loro, con i new talents che sfilano l’ultimo giorno, ignorati dalla stampa già emigrata in massa a Parigi che, astutamente, inizia a ridosso degli ultimi giorni delle sfilate milanesi, schierando subito, sin dal primo giorno, la contraerea pesante con almeno un paio di grandi nomi/inserzionisti al cui défilé è impossibile mancare. Se a Milano, con un fashion timing ridotto a soli 5 giorni di sfilate, è ovvio che, con così poco tempo a disposizione e con tanti nomi in calendario, molti show finiscano quasi per accavallarsi l’un l’altro, rendendo spesso impossibile ai giornalisti arrivare in tempo alle sfilate, Parigi può contare su ben 9 giorni, in ognuno dei quali inserisce, oltre ad un paio di grandi nomi, anche qualche giovane talento che la stampa ha così modo di conoscere. A Milano Giorgio Armani ha sempre chiesto invano, nonostante sia uno dei più potenti nomi del fashion system mondiale, un calendario più smart con i grandi e i piccoli nomi spalmati lungo tutti i giorni della fashion week per trattenere la stampa e costringere Parigi a “farsi più in là” con le date. Eppure, proprio lui, che da anni chiudeva la settimana milanese, per paura di veder partire anzi tempo la stampa più influente, ha anticipato il suo défilé. Ma di cosa hanno paura tutti? Il mondo dell’editoria è pieno di fashion magazine eleganti e moderni, distribuiti con successo in tutto il mondo: conta davvero così tanto il giudizio di giornalisti privi di ogni indipendenza di giudizio? Non sono un oracolo, soprattutto se si scopre che il destino del top della moda mondiale dipende sempre dall’Italia grazie a una filiera che non ha pari nel mondo. Non solo le maison più esclusive si avvalgono di grandi designer italiani, ma si guardano anche bene dall’ammettere di produrre in Italia i loro pezzi migliori, perché è qui che si trovano gli artigiani più bravi e i loro abiti più belli li tagliano e li cuciono i nostri sarti, per non parlare delle nostre ricamatrici dalle mani d’oro. Quindi, finiamola con la paura e la concorrenza spietata tra noi. I veri nemici sono altrove e, purtroppo per loro, hanno bisogno di noi.

“Milan is always Milan” says an old proverb, which also tells us a lot about how much the people from Milan love their city. Yes, the Milanese do, but their institutions do not. That includes the Mayor and the councillors, the designers who know nothing about networking, the public relation officers who have no knowledge of selection criteria when summoning the press and their guests, and last but not least, the board of governors of the Trade Council. We are very sorry to say this, but when you are besieged by external forces, like New York or Paris fashion week, which can count on their own ‘powers that be’ to dictate on which dates they intend to deliver, what is the point of starting to fight each other within the very fortress in which we are seeking refuge, instead of responding to the attack? Has everything really come down to “your death is my life”? We have already lost the supremacy of the grand textile fair that “Milano Unica” used to be. This event used to enjoy the presence of the greatest world textilers, mainly Italian, who, because of the local disorganisation and red tape, have eventually moved to Paris and its own “Premiere Vision”, where, anyway, they still are top sellers. Obviously travel expenses have a significant bearing now, but most of all, it is really a shame that “no man is a prophet in his own land”. What is happening to Milan, once a world fashion capital and today reduced to being an interlude between London and Paris fashion weeks? New York is always the first to showcase, with the press that matters lined up in a grand parade, summoned as it is by the not so occult powers that be, which are well known by all: some great fashion “priestess” with the power to create and destroy careers. It is not clear why this small group of people have all this power. Maybe, as in politics, someone extremely powerful gave them the task to give new impetus to the almost lifeless New York fashion week, and promote Paris as the new fashion Mecca, in order to contain Milan’s excessive power. Milan’s calendar seems to be written for them. The new talent shows take place on the last day, thus remaining ignored by the press, who by then has already migrated in large quantity to Paris. Very astutely, Paris fashion week begins right during the last few days of Milan’s show, with a day one heavy ‘aircraft’ counterattack. This features at least a couple of great names/advertisers whose fashion shows are impossible to ignore. Milan has a fashion life span of only 5 days. It is obvious that in such a short time and so many names in its time-table, many exhibits end up overlapping, thus making it impossible for the journalists to attend all shows on time. Paris can count on 9 days, during which a pair of big names always showcase with new talent. This allows the press to get to know the new faces too.

In Milan, despite being one of the greatest names in the world fashion industry, Giorgio Armani has always been refused a smarter schedule. To keep the press in town and force Paris to move its dates forward, Armani wanted to combine both the big and the small names throughout the entire Milan fashion week. Yet, despite being the one who for years had been closing Milan’s show, he decided to anticipate his appearance for fear missing the presence of the most influential press. But what is everybody scared of? The publishing industry is full of elegant and modern fashion magazines which are distributed all over the world: does the opinion of a small group of fashion journalists without any form of independent judgement matter so much? They are not an oracle. Above all, we know that the future of the best fashion will always depend on Italy for our production chain knows no match.

The exclusive fashion houses are not alone in taking advantage of the great Italian designers, yet they are careful not to admit that their best production happens in Italy. Indeed, it is here that the best craftsmen live and produce, cut and sew their most beautiful clothing, not to mention our gold-handed embroiders. Therefore it is time to stop being scared and competing amongst ourselves. Our true enemies are elsewhere and unfortunately for them, they need us.

Fino al prossimo 18 gennaio 2015, il Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza di Madrid presenterà la prima grande retrospettiva sul lavoro dello stilista francese Hubert de Givenchy, figura chiave della moda del 20esimo secolo e leggenda vivente nella storia della haute couture. La mostra, dal titolo “Hubert de Givenchy” è stata ideata e curata dallo stilista in persona, classe 1927, di nobile casato (è, infatti, conte) e ripercorre mezzo secolo di storia del costume e dell’alta moda, dall’apertura della sua gloriosa maison nel lontano 1952 fino al suo ritiro dalle scene nel 1996. Il geniale couturier, oggi 87enne, ha selezionato circa un centinaio delle sue più belle creazioni, prendendole in prestito da musei e collezioni private di tutto il mondo, molte delle quali sono per la prima volta esposte in pubblico.

La mostra mette in scena le eccezionali abilità artigianali dello stilista, con ricami, garze, e mussole e rivela l’influenza sullo stilista di grandissimi artisti come Joan Miró, Mark Rothko, Lucio Fontana e Theo

van Doesburg. Partner dell’iniziativa è l’italiana Bonaveri, azienda ferrarese, che ha ideato e realizzato i 90 manichini su cui sono presentati gli abiti, pensati per esaltare la natura iconica e l’eleganza senza tempo dello stile Givenchy e assicurare la perfetta vestibilità alle sue sublimi creazioni. Givenchy è stato il primo stilista a presentare, nel 1954, una linea Prêt-à-porter di lusso e i suoi raffinatissimi abiti hanno vestito alcune delle personalità più carismatiche dell’âge d’or dello star system mondiale, dalla mitica Jacqueline Kennedy alla contessa Wallis Simpson, da Greta Garbo a Marlene Dietrich e Ingrid Bergman, solo per citare qualche nome. Ma, soprattutto, colei che lui considerava al pari di una sorella, oltre che la sua migliore amica e musa assoluta: Audrey Hepburn, a cui dedicò il suo celebre profumo “L’Interdit” e per la quale creò nel 1954 gli spettacolari abiti indossati sul set di “Sabrina” con Humphrey Bogart e gli indimenticabili costumi, passati alla storia, del cult movie “Colazione da Tiffany”.

Il Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza mette in scena oltre cento creazioni del geniale stilista francese.

HUBERT DE GIVENCHY The Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza staged over a hundred creations of the brilliant French fashion designer.

Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is hosting the first great retrospective on the work of the French designer Hubert de Givenchy, a key figure in the 20th century fashion industry and a living legend in the history of haute couture. Curated by the designer himself, the “Hubert de Givenchy” exhibition will be open until the 18th January 2015. Born in 1927 of noble origins (he is in fact a count), he takes a half a century long journey back through the history of costume and fashion, starting from the opening of his fashion house in 1952, and ending with his 1996 retirement. Now 87, the brilliant couturier borrowed around 100 of his most beautiful creations from worldwide museums and private collections, some of which have never been exhibited to the public. The exhibition stages the designer’s exceptional craftsmanship with embroidery, gauze and muslin work and reveals the influence that great artists like Joan Miró, Mark Rothko, Lucio Fontana and Theo van Doesburg had on

Givenchy. This is a partnership with the Italian company from Ferrare Bonaveri, which devised and created the 90 mannequins on which the outfits are displayed. These enhance Givenchy’s iconic and timeless elegance and ensure the perfect wearability of his sublime work.

In 1954 Givenchy was the first designer to present a Prêt-à-porter luxury line and his sophisticated clothes have been worn by some of the most charismatic figures of the star system’s golden age. They include the legendary Jacqueline Kennedy, the duchess Wallis Simpson, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Ingrid Bergman, to name a few. But the one he considered a sister, his best friend and absolute muse was Audrey Hepburn, to whom he dedicated “L’Interdit”, his famous perfume. In 1954 he also created the spectacular outfits she wore next to Humphrey Bogart on the “Sabrina” set, as well as the unforgettable costumes of the cult movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, which have all gone down in history.

NORMAN PARKINSON: Back in Fashion, Proud Chelsea, 6th November - 7th December 2014 Si sta tenendo a Londra, presso l’elegante galleria Proud Chelsea la mostra “Norman Parkinson: Back in Fashion” che, inaugurata lo scorso 6 novembre, terrà banco fino al prossimo 7 dicembre 2014. La retrospettiva sta riscuotendo un grande successo di pubblico, data la grande fama che da sempre ha accompagnato l’eclettico e geniale fotografo inglese, particolarmente attivo nel campo della moda e insignito dell’Ordine dell’Impero Britannico. Parkinson, il cui nome di battesimo era Ronald William Parkinson Smith, nacque a Londra, ed andò a scuola alla Westminster School. Iniziò la sua carriera nel 1931 come apprendista dei fotografi di corte Speaight and Sons Ltd. Nel 1934 aprì il suo primo studio indipendente, insieme a Norman Kibblewhite, finché, completamente solo, spiccò il volo. Dal 1935 al 1940 lavorò per i mitici fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar e The Bystander, regalando al mondo immagini di una bellezza straordinaria e senza tempo, che tuttora affascinano generazioni su generazioni. Indimenticabili restano i servizi firmati per Vogue dal 1945 al 1960, sia gli shooting che i ritratti di star cui sapeva “togliere la maschera” da divo per immortalare il loro vero volto, in tutta la sua fragilità e purezza, senza mai preoccuparsi di come sarebbe dovuto apparire secondo i canoni dello star system. Era un istintivo e un profondo conoscitore dell’animo umano, nonché un autentico poeta dell’immagine.

London’s elegant Proud Chelsea Gallery is presently hosting the exhibition Norman Parkinson: Back in Fashion”, which opened on the 6th November and will close on the 7th December 2014. The retrospective is having an enormous success. This is possibly due to the great popularity that this eclectic and gifted English photographer has always enjoyed. Parkinson was very active in the fashion context and was also awarded an CBE. Born in London, he was christened Ronald William Parkinson Smith and attended the Westminster School. His career started when he began his apprenticeship with the Royal Court’s photographers Speaight and Sons Ltd. Together with Norman Kibblewhite, in 1934 he opened his first independent studio but eventually he flew off on his own. From 1935 to 1940 he worked for the legendary fashion magazines Harper’s Bazaar and The Bystander, through which he gave the world many images of extraordinary and timeless beauty that still fascinate generation after generation. His 1945 to 1960 Vogue’s shoots remain unforgettable. Through his portraits he was able to lift the stars’ mask and capture their real face in all its fragility and purity. He was never worried about how they were supposed to appear according to the star system. He was an instinctive man and an expert on the human soul, as well as a true imagery poet.

Una vita all’insegna dell’avventura e del rischio. Se Jean Paul Gaultier fosse un giocatore di poker, come canta Lady Gaga nella sua più famosa hit, avrebbe una “poker face” invidiabile, con imperscrutabili pensieri, impossibili da intuire, nonostante negli anni tutto di lui sia sembrato al mondo intero così chiaro, sovraesposto e cristallino. Ma faceva solo parte del suo personaggio. Personaggio e persona non sempre coincidono, soprattutto nel fashion system, tra bluff, rilanci, perdite di fortune e colpi di fortuna.

L’enfant terrible della moda francese, che ha stupito il mondo con le sue eclettiche creazioni che lo hanno consacrato di diritto uno dei pilastri della moda contemporanea, ritagliandosi, grazie alle sue ingegnose, seducenti, sottilmente crazy e impetuose creazioni, una meritata fetta di eternità a dispetto della caducità del mondo della moda, ha finalmente messo sul tavolo le sue carte e mostrato il suo punto, stupendo tutti con il classico colpo di scena, tipico dei grandi giocatori d’azzardo. “Mr poker face” non solo ha mostrato le sue carte, ma ha anche deciso di rilanciare, non certo di alzarsi dal tavolo e ritirarsi dalla partita, come in tanti hanno pensato quando ha annunciato di dire addio al mondo del Prêt-à-porter per dedicarsi solo a quello della haute couture e della cosmesi di lusso. Jean Paul Gaultier, con grande intelligenza, ha capito di aver detto e dato davvero tutto al mondo del ready to wear. Perché ripetersi come succede a tanti suoi colleghi che, quando le idee languono, fanno man bassa dell’archivio delle maison per cui lavorano? Gaultier ha capito che la vera via per uscire dall’empasse della crisi economica è puntare sul lusso. E cosa c’è di più lussuoso della haute couture e dell’alta cosmesi? Giocatori inquieti e poco portati al rischio, non compirebbero mai una tale scelta perché le clienti dell’alta moda sono rare e selezionate, mentre il Prêt-à-porter raggiunge un pubblico vastissimo. Quello di Gaultier è forse un azzardo, ma quanti dicevano lo stesso di Thierry Mugler che, poi, proprio con la cosmesi ha raggiunto le grandi masse più del ready to wear con profumi come “Angel” e “Alien”, sempre in cima tra i più venduti di sempre? Chiaramente dotato di grande autostima e fiducia nelle proprie capacità e finalmente libero dalle costrizioni del marketing aziendale, Gaultier inizia la sua una nuova partita all’insegna della più totale libertà di dar corpo ai sogni più sublimi dell’alta moda. Tra l’altro, nemmeno nella cosmesi non è certo un novizio: i suoi inebrianti profumi, racchiusi nelle splendide boccette a forma di corsetti femminili, come “Classic”, di cui è appena uscita una nuova versione, hanno già fatto storia nel settore beauty. Non resta che aspettare cosa si inventerà un uomo capace di godersi la vita senza rimpianti, senza attaccarsi inutilmente al passato, con quella fierezza che non conosce inutili nostalgie e quell’aria da poker face che sembra quasi dire: Adieu “ready” to wear. I’m “ready” per una nuova avventura. Ma le sue carte, al momento, restano ben nascoste. Per scoprirle non resta che aspettare la prossima sfilata di gennaio 2015.

His life never ceased to be focussed on the pursuit of adventure and risk. If Jean Paul Gaultier were Lady Gaga’s most famous hit’s poker player, his would be an enviable “poker face”. Despite his overexposed and see-through public reputation, his thoughts are really unfathomable and impossibile to foresee.

He obviously has a stage persona. Especially in the fashion sector, with its bluff calling, relaunching, fortune losses and gains, private and public never coincide. Thanks to his eclectic creations, Gaultier became one of the pillars of contemporary fashion and never stopped amazing the world. In spite of fashion’s transience, his ingenious, seductive, subtly crazy and wild creations earned him a well deserved place in the sector’s history. He put his cards on the table and made his point, whilst astonishing everyone with his ‘coups de théâtre’, as any good gambler would. “Mr poker face” did not just show his cards, but also decided to raise the stakes and certainly never left the table to withdraw. Many thought he would pack it up when he waved goodbye to Prêt-à-porter to concentrate on haute couture and luxury beauty products.

Very cleverly, Jean Paul Gaultier understood that he had said and given it all in the world of ready to wear.

He did not want to repeat himself like many of his colleagues do when short of ideas, and opt to ransack the archive of the maison they work for. Gaultier understood that in order to come out of a financial crisis one must actually set his sight on the luxury end of the market. Nothing is more luxurious than haute couture and high cosmetics. Anxious gamblers with no attitude for risk would never make such a choice.

High fashion clients are a rare elite but those of Prêt-à-porter are instead more common. Gaultier may be a gambler, but many said the same of Thierry Mugler, who actually achieved his greatest ready to wear success through the sale of beauty items like “Angel” and “Alien”, two of the most popular perfumes to be sold on the market. Clearly equipped with remarkable self-esteem and trust in his own abilities, and finally free from the company’s constraints, Gaultier founded his new ‘game’ exclusively on the newly acquired complete freedom to materialise high fashion’s most sublime dreams. In addition, even in cosmetics, he is definitely not a beginner: With their splendid corset shape bottles, his inhebriating fragrances have already made history in the sector. A new version of his well known “Classic” recently took its place in the shops’ windows. We now simply need to wait what else he will be capable of devising next. Gaultier is a man who knows how to enjoy life without regrets or remaining attached to the past. His boldness knows no nostalgia. His ‘poker face’ almost seems to say: “Adieu ready to wear. I am ready for a new adventure”. His trick up the sleeve is currently hidden. To find out we must wait until his next show due in January 2015.

Per la prossima primavera/estate 2015 lo stilista italiano Riccardo Tisci, direttore creativo della maison francese Givenchy, ha voluto mandare in passerella delle autentiche donne virago, interpreti di una collezione sexy, forte e aggressiva, che emanano una energia intensa e concentrata, non solo per abiti e attitude, ma anche grazie al loro intenso make up. Il look è rock couture, con l’ombretto monocolore che disegna una svirgolata sugli occhi, accentuandone la bellezza e la profondità anche grazie all’uso di un altro ombretto, questa volta leggermente glitterato, e appena sfumato sulla palpebra mobile. Un delicato blush rosé, insieme a un raffinato rossetto, selezionato sempre in una nuance neutra che declina verso il rosa cipria, smorza i toni di un viso così carico di glam e sensualità, dal trucco quasi iperbolico grazie agli occhi messi in grande evidenza sia dal design con sfumatura a punta arcuata che grazie all’uso sapiente di un mascara capace di incurvare perfettamente le ciglia, regalando loro nuovo volume. A delicate rosé blush and an elegant lipstick in a neutral nuance, which is very close to pale pink, together soften the strong sensuality and glam of a deeply hyperbolic make-over. The eyes are given prominence by the arched sfumato eye shadow design and mascara that is capable of perfect curling and creates extra volume. In this case, the make-up artist was able to demonstrate excellent finishing craftsmanship. The final touch on Riccardo Tisci’s assertive and brazen Givenchy woman is a thin layer of translucent powder, which is a must-have in any respectable make-up.
