SURREALISMO IN COSTUME DA BAGNO words PASQUALE BARBELLA
Milano, pomeriggio inoltrato, né caldo né freddo. Usciamo da un covo sui Navigli con due birre in mano. Menabrea. Federico Garibaldi è nero dal collo ai piedi (la testa è indecisa fra il bianco e la cenere): pantaloni a cavallo basso, maglia di cotone lavato con cernierona laterale e maniche alla zuava, stivali alti con due cerniere vistose e asimmetriche. Non mi va di usare il minirecorder, sa di terzo grado. Preferisco ripor tare a memoria le risposte degli interrogati. Lo so che è rischioso, ma tanto il rischio è più loro che mio. Propongo di camminare fino alla Darsena: coi gomiti sul parapetto si cazzeggia meglio. Dovrei essere arrabbiato con te. Hai steso un velo di horror sugli arenili pugliesi della mia adolescenza. Come ti è venuto in mente? Non è horror, è paradosso. E comunque stravedo per le tue spiagge: con la scusa di quella serie (blueShores, ndr) ci sono tornato in vacanza cinque estati di seguito. Ho un debole per i paradossi visivi. A volte tolgo l’audio al televisore, prendo una birra dal frigo e lascio scorrere le immagini ascoltando qualcos’altro. La realtà rimane identica a sé stessa, ma il suo senso cambia drasticamente. In spiaggia ho fatto qualcosa di simile: ho azzerato idealmente l’audio per concentrarmi sugli atteggiamenti e i gesti dei bagnanti. In Puglia, la fisicità balneare mi sembra diversa che in Liguria, dove sono nato e cresciuto. È più disinvolta, esibita come una sfida. Uno show non meno survoltato delle mie fantasie. Sì, ora che mi ci fai pensare c’è qualcosa di vagamente teatrale nel body language dei pugliesi. Su una spiaggia estiva lo si nota di più, perché sei fuori dai tuoi panni consueti e devi surrogare col corpo i messaggi dell’abbigliamento. La vita di spiaggia è surrealismo puro. Però quando hai fotografato i panettieri di Altamura hai scelto uno stile decisamente realistico. Cosa ti ha spinto, in quel caso, verso un linguaggio così diverso dal tuo?
Milan. Late afternoon. Is the weather nice or bad? We don’t care about that. We exit a den along the Navigli canals holding a couple of Italian Menabrea beers in our hands. Federico Garibaldi, as usual, is in a total black outfit (only his hair is a different color - not exactly white, nor ash grey). Some could say he looks like a bohemian punk: low-crotch trousers; wash cotton zouave shir t with big side zip; high zipper boots. I don’t have my mini-recorder. This is not a police interrogation. I will need to trust my memor y. It’s a gamble (just for me?). I suggest we walk to the Darsena, the old basin: we can chat leaning on the parapet. I’m angry with you! You threw a Horror veil over the sandy shores of my beloved Puglie! You turned the places where I grew up scary! What the hell! It’s not about horror. It’s all about paradox. And anyway I’m crazy about the Puglie beaches. Be sure! This photo series, blueShores, gave me a good reason to go back there year after year ; five summer holidays in a row. I like visual paradoxes. Sometimes I turn down the TV: I grab a cold beer from the fridge and star t looking at the images on the silent screen while listening to a different soundtrack. Reality both remains the same and is something else entirely. During my summers on the beach I behaved the same way. No sound. Just my eyes really watching the bathers’ attitudes and gestures. On the Puglie beaches I found strong physical presence, a self-assured, almost sassy way to handle one’s body that I never see in my native Liguria. High voltage stuff, like the fantasies it stimulated in me. You’re right! The Pugliese body language expresses a sort of scenic presence. Beach as theater, you know. On the beach, you notice it more, because bodies become a substitute of dress codes. Beach life is pure surrealism. I’m curious to know, though, why you changed your style for this particular project. When you photographed the Altamura bakers, a few years ago, you adopted a realistic style.

Da una stilista eclettica quale Marella Ferrera c’era da aspettarselo: era solo questione di incontri la sua “invasione” nel mondo del design. Lei, che da sempre ha trattato le sue creazioni più come oggetti di haute couture piuttosto che come abiti, non poteva non avere voglia di creare design allo stato puro. Inevitabile quindi la sua metamorfosi da Haute Créatrice à Haute Designer. E quale red carpet migliore per questo suo nuovo ruolo se non la Settimana Internazionale del Design di Milano? Eccola quindi, lo scorso aprile, impegnata su più spazi a presentare le sue neonate creazioni. E’ nei Chiostri dell’Umanitaria égérie della milanese Paola Lenti, azienda di design da sempre orientata alla ricerca e alla sperimentazione e al Salone del Mobile con la collezione “Trame mediterranee” per la siciliana Lithea. Il fil rouge della moda di Marella Ferrera, con le sue contaminazioni antiche su strutture moderne, si snoda anche in queste design capsule. Tappeti ricamati, doverosamente, e romanticamente, a mano, con disegni tipici delle ceramiche delle antiche dimore siciliane. E come il tessuto dei suoi abiti ospita le tipiche materie dell’isola di Tomasi di Lampedusa, le sue stuoie sono intarsiate con piccoli frammenti di mosaico come conchiglie spiaggiate, i suoi tavoli sono in pietra levigata come i sassi resi dal mare e accolgono lava, pasta di vetro e decori dipinti a mano.
It was to be expected by an eclectic fashion designer like Marella Ferrera that would be only matter of meeting her "invasion" in designers world. It's kind of normal for Marella Ferrera, who always considered her creations more like haute couture pieces rather than as simple clothes, to wish of creating pure design. It was impossible, indeed, to skip her metamorphosis from haute author to haute designer. Which better "red carpet" - for the new role than the Milano Design Week? Here she was, last April, ready to to show her new creations. It was in the cloisters of Umanitaria egerìe of Milanese Paola Lenti, design company by far focused on research and experimentation and also it was at the "Salone del Mobile" with the collection Trame Mediterranee by the Sicilian company Lithea. The distinctive fashion feature of Marella Ferrera, the fusion of antique on modern structures, takes place in the design capsule. Handmade romantic carpets, with the typical patterns of the old pottery of the old Sicilian villas. As well as the fabrics of her clothes, the wickers are inlaid by little fragment of shell, the tables of polished stone looking like sea rocks inserted with lava, glass and hand painted decorations. The classic Caltagirone tradition became new design.
