Three new filter-taps from Zip Water Zip Water has developed a new generation of its advanced drinking water appliance – the Zip HydroTap – in new design styles and colours that suit any kitchen. Combining great looks and functionality, they put crystal clear, boiling, chilled or sparkling filtered water at your fingertips in an instant. There are three options to choose from in a range of finishes including bright chrome, brushed chrome, matte black and gloss black: Zip HydroTap Arc; Zip HydroTap!Cube; and Zip HydroTap Elite. User-friendly operation is achieved via a single lever – use it to select the type of water you want [filtered boiling, chilled or sparkling water] and the button changes colour to match – red for boiling, blue for chilled still and white for chilled sparkling. Then simply pull the lever forward for hands-free continuous filling or push it away for momentary dispensing. Every tap in the Zip HydroTap Design and Celsius ranges comes with the Zip 0.2 micron filtration system – which instantly delivers the pure water free from contaminants as small as 1/5000th of a mm. Chlorine taste and odour are completely removed; while fluoride is retained. Its air-cooled ventilation system doesn’t waste water; and the new G4 models use up to 53% less energy than superseded models. Zip Industries has also unveiled its Zip Celsius range, which delivers both hot and cold functionality from a single tap. German-engineered steam ironing system Miele Australia recently released their FashionMaster steam ironing system [$2,199] comprising a hand iron with non-stick honeycomb-soleplate, an intuitive ironing table and a steam generator; all in one manoeuvrable and easy-touse unit. It provides high steam pressure to ensure exceptional ironing results on virtually all textiles: from delicate silk blouses and dense linen jackets; to difficult items with sequins, embroidery and appliqués. The honeycomb-soleplate distributes steam across the entire soleplate; with options of steam pulses or continuous steam delivery. Ironing time is also dramatically reduced. It automatically switches off the steam supply after three minutes of inactivity; but will resume as soon as the steam button is pressed with the Memory function. The clever 1-2 Lift System enables an easy set-up of the all-inone unit in just two movements. The first unlocks the unit; while the second guides the ironing table into a horizontal position until it engages. The ironing table can then be adjusted to suit your most comfortable working height. At 120cm x 40cm, the FashionMaster Active Ironing Table accommodates an entire trouser leg; while the shaped end fits shirts and blouses. When ironing is complete the FashionMaster neatly folds away with all accessories disappearing into the storage compartment in the compact side tower. The Steam Jet function is ideal for smoothing hanging garments such as jackets, dresses and curtains; which can be used while it is folded away. Two unusual wall-tile ranges from Beaumont Tiles Wall tiles come in a range of structures and dimensions, many offering formations that are tactile and give a gutsy personal look that’s anything but sterile. Beaumont Tiles recognises that some home-renovators want to create an art gallery feel at home to distinguish themselves; and to create that special point-of-interest for their guests. Accordingly, Beaumont Tiles have recently included two special tile ranges in 2016 that can assist homerenovators express themselves on the walls of their homes to create a style that comes from within. Outdoors furniture inspired by the beach-culture of the 1970s Together with designer Trent Jansen Tait has crafted a collection of outdoors furniture that conjures up the nostalgia of Australian summer living in the 70s. In conceiving this collection Jansen explored the myths and memories of summer and surf, rediscovering his love of the ocean and curiosity for Australia’s die-hard surf culture. Hours spent down at his local surf shop, sharing coffees with mates, and trading jokes with Harry the local surf shop owner, helped peel back the myths surrounding the legendary Aussie surfer. A passionate researcher, Jansen applied a scientific eye to Australia’s surf culture, studying the secrets of wave formations. He admires the beautiful linear diagrams that illustrate the different stages of waves as they gather force, roll, crest and fall in a sudsy froth of sand and surf. The TIDAL chairs capture that curling, rounded flow of rolling waves. Jansen also applies a stylised edginess – straight lines and tight radii – to the chair’s juicy curves.

Stainless steel wire in a powdercoated finish speaks to the linear language of those wave diagrams. A seamless fluidity emerges as the doubled-up legs rise, and then diverge, circling up around the back of the chair before coming back down again. In a poetic twist, Jansen captures the swell of flowing water in a series of tidal marks that ripple up the seat base before breaking up and around the side of the chair. Emulating the long, smooth pull of the building wave is the TIDAL sunlounge. Like a cool drink of water, the sunlounge is all laidback calm, a long, leisurely lead-up to what is sure to end as a dip in the drink. The collection speaks to our modern Australia lifestyle. Its stylish lines and stainless steel wire construction allows it to seamlessly work into the vernacular of both indoors and outdoors environments.

How to revitalise a hardwood deck with Sikkens Woodcare products

If your deck is in need of a lift set aside a few hours to clean the timber before recoating. Timber coating specialist Sikkens recommends the following tips to revive the deck, for years of enjoyment ahead. You will need: •
Hose or pressure washer
•
Stiff bristled brush
•
Detergent
•
Sikkens Cetol BLX-Pro
Remove contaminants, dirt and grime
How to do it: •
Clean the entire deck with a hose or pressure washer to remove all contaminants, dirt and grime.
•
Scrub with a stiff bristled brush using a mixture of mild detergent and water.
•
Rinse with a hose or pressure washer until soap suds are removed.
•
When completely dry, apply a liberal coat of Sikkens Cetol BLX-Pro [$51.15] in the desired colour, in the direction of the grain. For best results apply two coats, with two hours between each coat.

For hardwood decks that are weathered or grey, a cleaning product such as Sikkens Cetol BL Deck & Wood Cleaner [$23.32] needs to be applied before recoating. This fast acting gel formula will brighten and revitalise grey and weathered timber, in preparation for application of the recoat. Neglected decks that are peeling, flaking or blistered, will need to be sanded back to bare timber, before applying Sikkens Cetol BL Deck & Wood Cleaner [$23.32]. Areas that are affected with mould or mildew must be properly treated before recoating otherwise mould will continue to grow underneath the fresh paintwork.

The linear footprint of the building is 40m x 6m wide and angled on the site to face due north. In a direct response to passive design principles this allows maximum solar penetration and provides good cross ventilation. The design features a skillion roof that slopes gently at 3-degrees from the east end up towards the higher living spaces and deck. The 28m long skillion roof was divided into three sections using Stramit Speed Deck Ultra® decking and Stramit FarLap® roof lap joint system. Stramit’s clever FarLap® roof lap joint system allows for the management of long roof runs, especially when site access is an issue; and facilitates the handling of sheets by making them smaller in length. Located in a dense forestry area, architect Allan Lamb wanted to create a modern two storey dwelling that would be sympathetic to its natural surroundings. Rising damp, or salt damp, is a natural phenomenon that occurs predominantly in old masonry buildings where moisture containing ground salts rise up the wall by capillary action. It comes about due to either a breakdown of an existing dampcourse due to age, or a lack of an adequate one; and its presence causes unsightly discoloration and deterioration in the paint and rendered finishes on brick walls.
For many home-renovators with older homes this is a common problem. New LED globes and dimmers When the Australian Government banned incandescent globes it was to reduce the amount of energy used to light our homes, but unfortunately at the time there was no natural replacement for the incandescent globe. Initially there were Halogen globes which were 30% more efficient; followed by the compact Fluro globes which were 70% more efficient. Next came the LED which was 90% more efficient. The first generation of LED globes were based on a 12-Volt LED chip; but the latest LED globes have strips similar to an old Edison globe and produce an impressive amount of yellow light from a 4-Watt globe. They fit all types of sockets [bayonet and Edison screw] and come in a candle, fancy round or larger globe. The 4-watt globe is so bright that now there are 2-Watt versions which are still quite bright. It was then discovered that the universal dimmer that had worked with all type of globes would dim the new globes to only 40% - not quiet enough. Clipsal Australia has accordingly developed a new dimmer to go with the latest LED globes, which can be fitted to all Classic Electric branded traditional switches; all available from Memory Lane of Ascot Vale [Melbourne].

How to repaint rusted and weathered metal for a long-lasting result Metal care paint brand Hammerite offers the following tips to ensure metal projects are completed the right way, first time.
Ferrous metal
How to identify different metals. Different types of metal require different treatments, identifying the type of metal before treating it is important in achieving best results. There are two main groups of metal: ferrous and non-ferrous. The best way to identify between the two is with a magnet. Ferrous metal contains iron and the magnet will stick; and this type of metal rusts. Non-ferrous metals, including copper, aluminium and zinc, contain less iron and the magnet will not stick. Painting on galvanised metal. Another form of metal is galvanised metal, this is steel covered with zinc to protect the surface. Although a magnet will stick to galvanised metal it needs to be treated like a non-ferrous metal due to the zinc coating. When treating unprotected surfaces, a white deposit is often left behind. Ensure this is removed before applying Hammerite Direct to Galvanised Paint for better paint adhesion. What is rust? And how to prevent it. Rust is formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Over a sufficient amount of time, any iron-mass exposed to water will eventually convert entirely to rust and disintegrate. Rust is permeable to air and water, therefore the interior piece of metal continues to corrode. Prevent rust with coatings that stop rust formulation, such as Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint. When to worry about large cracks in your walls? Wall cracks are common in Australian houses and though some are nothing to worry about, others can indicate sinking or damaged foundation. Turning a blind eye can result in missing the warning signs for serious and ongoing structural damage. If the cause of wall cracks is not identified and addressed, the damaged foundations can quickly devalue a property. Generally, smaller hairline cracks are not cause for concern. These are usually the result of seasonal expansion and contraction of clay soils beneath the house resulting in minor foundation movement. These types of cracks can be easily patched and re-painted.

However, larger cracks that display the following characteristics may indicate a weakness in the property’s foundation: one side of the wall is higher than the other; doors and windows no longer close in their frame; cracks are wider than about 5mm. Problematic wall cracks will typically start at windows, doorways or house corners. Large cracks may appear because the property’s foundation has shrunk or lost its strength, causing all or part of the house to sink. This usually happens because the moisture in the soil beneath the settled section of the home is either too wet or too dry. The CSIRO’s Homeowner’s Guide is a great resource for understanding why a home may move and how to manage the soil beneath its footings. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission also offers valuable advice. The best long-term solution for fixing large cracks is to lift, re-level and re-support the home. This process is called “underpinning”. As the house is elevated to a level position, the cracks may close or become smaller. Plaster or render walls can then be patched and repainted. Windows and doors will also usually begin to work properly again. A modern, innovative alternative to traditional concrete underpinning is Uretek® resin injection [Mainmark Company]. Create a zoned backyard the whole family can enjoy One of the most effective ways to improve your backyard is by repurposing the space into functional zones. Zoning the backyard can create areas for playing, eating, cooking and relaxing. Defining these zones using fencing, plants or other materials such as pavers and stepping stones, provides autonomy for each space to shine individually while allowing the whole backyard to operate functionally. A zoned garden works well for backyards of all sizes. For smaller areas, get creative and have fun with it. Built-in seating is a great way to make the most of limited space and a vertical garden on unused walls will add visual interest and character. If entertaining family and friends is your thing, look at adding a built-in barbecue area. It’s all about making the most of the space you have and making the space work for you. Landscape expert and Adbri Masonry brand ambassador Jason Hodges provides some design hints on how to create zoned gardens: Children’s retreat. Section off a corner of the yard and make it child-friendly. If the yard is not big enough to accommodate a play house, small tepees are a great alternative. Insulated panel construction presents economic, time and efficiency savings when compared with a traditional build. Frames, support, additional linings and multiple layers of bulk insulation can be replaced by just one layer of insulated panel in many cases. By accessing this product library users can integrate a range of wall and roof panel systems into their projects from either the concept stage or by substituting Bondor materials into existing models.Bondor’s library files are formatted like technical data sheets, displaying thermal, fire and span data allowing users to match the right panel properties to the project requirement. Bondor’s BIM product library has been developed in partnership with 3D software companies GRAPHISOFT® and A2K Technologies.

Cooking stone Smeg recently added a Gourmet Refractory Cooking Stone to its collection of designer ovens. It fits into the base of any of the brand’s 60cm ovens and will faithfully recreate the cooking conditions of a stone oven: even, constant heat that cooks pizzas and breads to a delectable crispness. Use of the stone couldn’t be easier – place in the oven and turn setting to maximum heat. When the thermostat indicator light switches off put the pizza onto the stone.
