Havwoods’ TrikBrik collection of faux brick and stone wall-cladding panels are visually true-to-life; but can be installed quickly and cleanly by unskilled labour without special tools. TrikBrik panels have excellent thermal, acoustic and flame retardant properties. Being water repellent and non-permeable they are unaffected by humidity and won’t fade in the sun. The panels may be treated with anti-graffiti formula if required and can be repainted with polyester resin paint if a different colour is preferred. Aestheticallyauthentic and technologically-advanced, TrikBrik can be used on interior walls, columns and other vertical features such as kitchen islands and around fireplaces. The easy-to-use system comprises interlocking panels that are lightweight, durable and visually realistic. TrikBrik panels are made from high-density polyurethane, polyester resin and crushed marble. They can be easily cut to size and come with mastic and paints to conceal joins. Made in Europe, the clever manufacturing system eliminates difficult installation and the need for skilled labour and special tools; and offers a lighter load than real brick and stone. Havwoods’ TrikBrik collection comprises eight products that imitate brick, slate and mosaic walls in a variety of colours.
Waterproofed DIY sealant After some comprehensive R&D, Loctite has introduced its innovative sealant RE-NEW, a technically advanced new sealant product. With this single product and no additional tools required, you can DIY-address sealing-issues at home with an easy-touse solution without the nozzle and caulking-gun. Guaranteed to last, featuring an innovative formula of Silicontec2.0 which is 100% silicon and waterproofed, RE-NEW provides a simple but effective sealant against cracks and joints in wet areas. The formula also contains a triple protection system for long-term mould protection, covering as well as hindering the growth of mould on the sealant. You don’t need to be a DIY-expert to give it a go. The smoothing, integrated applicator makes it a breeze to apply over the required area with a single movement, which can be done in a matter of minutes with no other tools required. As part of its innovation, its attached cap ensures that the solution won’t dry out; ready for the next job.
Coloured aluminium and stainless steel sheets Spectrum, Axolotl’s latest coloured metal surface, was developed in response to a vision in “blue metal” by the designers at Futurespace. Spectrum, and its breathtaking potential, was showcased in a debut project for Savills by Futurespace. Custom coloured “Tanzanite” blue stainless steel sheets were fitted to the curved interiors of the stair void. The metallic surface provided a clever way to inject colour and vibrancy into the project with its high-shine finish picking up the surrounding light, and accentuating the curved walls. Spectrum is available in flat aluminium and stainless steel sheets in sizes up to 2400 x 1200mm and thicknesses from 0.9mm - 3mm. Panels can be laser cut to custom shapes and sizes. You can choose from Axolotl’s colours and designs; or unleash your creativity and design your own select Spectrum surface with access to the full range of Pantone or CMYK reference colours.
Premium premixed mortar Austral Masonry recently released Mortex, a premium premixed mortar that eliminates the need for onsite mixing. On many building and renovating sites the mixing of various materials for mortar by ill-equipped apprentices and Tradies can result in the use of under-strength, non-compliant mortar; which can be costly and time-consuming to rectify. Mortex is a pre-blended mix of cement, specially graded sand, lime and admixtures. When mixed with water, a highquality mortar blend is created, in line with Australian building standards AS3700:2001. Other benefits include: M4 rated, meaning it is the strongest mortar blend specified in the Australian Standards. Pre-bagged ready for use requiring only the addition of clean water. Highly workable and cohesive, with a long board life. Provides a weather-resistant, durable mortar that is suitable for most brick and block applications; as well as a roof tile bedding version.
During the colder months, mould is a common occurrence and problem for renters as well as homeowners. RE-NEW has a triple protection system for assured long-term mould deterrence that repels spores, stops mould growth and prevents regrowth, keeping the sealant looking whiter and brighter around the home and acting as a preventative during the colder months. Herringbone engineered timber flooring and reclaimed timber floorboards DESIGN FROM HAVWOODS. The classic herringbone pattern found great popularity in France during the Renaissance. Herringbone floors are subtle and sophisticated; and look elegant in a myriad of architectural styles and projects. This collection comprises a range of products in which the length of the timber blocks is an exact multiple of the width, enabling them to be laid in a herringbone pattern as well as in basket- weave and tumbling-dice configurations. The collection has been designed for easy glue-down installation and is available prefinished and unfinished. Four tongue-and-groove boards have been added to the collection, 15mm thick x 305mm wide x 1672mm long with a micro-bevelled edge, and priced at $114.50 per square metre all with an oiled finish. OAK WILLOW [HW3190] is creamy white; OAK COPPER [HW3194] is coppery dark brown; OAK CHASE [HW3192] is golden light brown; OAK SILVER [HW3196] is a cool silver with pale brown tones. RELIK. Reclaimed timber is often desired for its character yet its lack of uniformity can make installation difficult and lead to high levels of waste. In response, Havwoods developed the Relik collection, which comprises pre-finished engineered products that make more efficient use of timber reclaimed from barns, wharfs and docks. The result is easy-to- fit boards that are stable enough for Australian climates and suitable for use with underfloor heating. Relik offers a range of eight flooring options, the newest two being genuine reclaimed oak, priced at $184.50 per square metre. Schweigen recently released a premium collection of kitchen appliances called “Schweigen IN” comprising built-in ovens, cooktops and rangehoods. Each product features design details the company calls “intelligent style”. The induction cooktops feature three pre-set cooking programmes for temperature adjustment, and a timer to set cooking times for each cooktop zone. Combination cooktop ASKO has released a new version of its gas and induction cooktop, Duo Fusion II [HIG1994M, $5,999], offering two methods of cooking by combining a gas burner with induction in the one unit. The new model has been improved for greater functionality and ease of use, including a touch control for the gas burner to ensure the same temperature every time for consistent cooking. Duo Fusion II features the Volcano wok burner and two induction zones – one bridged and one extra-large zone – so the induction areas can be used in a number of different ways for different sized pots and pans. 1920s house given a Laminex makeover An original 1920s house was recently renovated in Camberwell, Melbourne, offering an example of the way heritage and innovation can seamlessly combine to create a comfortable home-renovation. Retaining the character of the dwelling was paramount for the owner who was keen to ensure all remodelling work remained sympathetic to the period-features; and that original materials were recycled into the new design wherever possible. As such, the home-renovation is a juxtaposition of two eras: creating a deliberate distinction between period rooms restored to their former glory; and the extension. While the creation of the open-plan area at the rear of the house is a change from the original aesthetic, the contemporary design elements are underpinned by historical architecture. Doors and bricks from the demolished outhouse and kitchen reconstruction were repurposed for the extension walls and, left exposed in certain areas, created a focal point. The discovery of a Laminex benchtop installed in the original
1923-kitchen offered an opportunity to reference the design choices made by the previous owner. A combination of Laminex and essastone by Laminex products were used to emulate Scandi-style centred on natural materials. Concrete polished floors and exposed brickwork blend with Laminex Impressions textured surfaces in Sublime Teak Riven finish creating the look of real timber cabinetry across the front island base, overhead panels and oven surround. Green-design was a focus; and the Impressions range enabled the renovating-team to bring the outside in thanks to its realistic look and feel. The quality of the material also means that the surface won’t fade or pose any colour change issues in the future. The kitchen joinery is complemented by essastone by Laminex Silica benchtops along with a contrasting Metaline Splashback and Panels in Nimbus. Using Metaline offered a glass-like appearance, while being easier to install and more affordable. The colour palette is extended throughout the living space to create a feeling of cohesion, with the bathroom cabinetry featuring the same Laminex Impressions textured surfaces in Sublime Teak Riven finish, topped with Laminex Freestyle Surfaces in New Kosciusko for the vanitytop. The vanity panels subtly accent on-trend limed timber floors; while the clean white base of Laminex Freestyle Surfaces in New Kosciusko emphasises the paler tones within bold, art deco wall tiles.

Floodlights have typically been bulky and industrial in appearance. In contrast, the newly released compact, slimline design of the innovative Crompton Hornet LED floodlight [Crompton Lighting], provides home-renovators with a stylish aesthetic for their external lighting. It is a low-profiled LED floodlight with an adjustable head that offers the flexibility to direct the light anywhere [300° horizontal and 200° vertical]. The compact slimline body is designed to be concealed when mounted under the eaves; and is easy to install with a retro-fit accessory included. There’s no compromise on precision and efficiency as it offers the performance of larger units. Home electricity-storage Solar-power storagebattery battery Dramatic increases in household electricity bills across Australia – particularly in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia – are behind a German battery group’s entry into the Australian household energy storage market: Deutsche Energieversorgung GmbH recently introduced its lithium-based SENEC Home Energy Storage System. Battery energy storage using existing or new domestic solar panel installations is becoming popular in the Australian power market. With surging power prices and increased concerns over reliability and supply, households and businesses are interested in ways to increase or improve the security and price of energy delivery. Lithium-based batteries have proved their worth after initial teething issues globally; and there has been a successful crossing of lithium technology into affordable, high performance domestic energy storage applications using solar panels. Energy storage batteries offer households greater control of their electricity, particularly to better optimise usage and tariff options around peak times and off-peak periods; and to move most of their reliance on power from a grid network to their own batteries. Some battery-sourced electricity systems now have the capability to supply up to 80% of a household’s regular needs. The Australian Senec range offers 5.0kWh, 7.5kWh and 10.0kWh models; has a design life of up to 20 years on the rechargeable batteries; has met all Australian standards; is extremely safe due to a protective shut-down system in the event of any incident; and enables “add-ons” to increase capacity. A backup feature on the system continues to supply electricity to a chosen circuit in the event of a broader grid power failure. It has been designed to be retro-fitted onto any existing solar system.
Sound bar for $649 that fits old and new TVs Synergy Audio Visual has launched the Cambridge Audio TVB2 Sound Bar, a well-designed and discreet addition to a home cinema set up. Providing larger-than-life sound and offering excellent technology and features at an affordable price-point [$649], the TVB2 is easy to operate and developed to work seamlessly with today’s streaming devices and services for the ultimate home cinematic experience. It is discreet in size with big bass sound and a wireless subwoofer; cutting edge, room-filling sound; Bluetooth and NFC - tap-to-pair for easy streaming from mobile devices; and three inputs with 4K pass-through provide exception image and sound quality from connected devices. As different households have a range of TVs, both old and new, Cambridge has included both optical digital input and an AUX-in analogue input, so that any TV can be connected. The TVB2 is an HDMI switch, able to have up to three HDMI input sources which can include satellite TV boxes, Blu-ray or DVD players, digital streaming platforms and the latest games consoles. Included in the box are all the cables needed including HDMI, Optical and an AUX cable for a simple plug-and-play. Also in the box is a bracket to wall-mount the soundbar above or below the TV.
Evergen - backed by CSIRO and AMP Capital – recently released an intelligent solar home battery storage system, developed in Australia. This new storage-battery has self-adjusting, intelligent technology that learns and adapts to your home’s energy consumption patterns; predicts solar production by connecting to local weather stations; and communicates this information via an easy-to-use app. Leveraging the combined strength of solar and batteries with smart technology, the Evergen system continuously analyses and optimises home energy costs, always choosing the most efficient source between solar, battery and the grid. The energy management technology was developed by CSIRO, which then granted the rights to Evergen. The system is remotely managed by Evergen; and regularly analysed and updated by CSIRO. Households with intelligent home battery systems, like Evergen, can better spread “load shedding”, voluntarily reducing electricity usage to prevent blackouts and ease shortages by significantly reducing demand on the network during peak times. Evergen systems are best suited to freestanding homes and can be installed throughout Australia. The unit cost is competitive with comparable solar and battery solutions; and includes the solar panels and battery units as well as the intelligent-management hardware, home consultation and installation. Based on their pilot program, Evergen claims that the anticipated savings to household energy costs are up to 80% from the time of installation. Systems have already been operating within a trial-group of selected Australian homes for over 12 months and are subject to rigorous ongoing safety and performance testing in collaboration with CSIRO.

Stone flooring options to link the indoors with the outdoors Eco Outdoor [Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth & Adelaide] has a wide selection of stone finishes for an indoors/outdoors tiling-renovation for a floor comprising just one material that is as appealing and functional indoors as it is outdoors. Functionally, stone floors offer a robust and resilient surface that makes it a long-lasting choice for high-traffic hallways and kitchen floors prone to spills. Naturally cool underfoot, stone finishes are ideal for Australia’s warmer climate and can be layered with underfloor heating or a rug for cooler months of the year. Moreover they’re also durable, resistant to wear and tear, and easy to look after and maintain. Hardwearing, yet softer than concrete, stone flooring can bring a natural, rustic, industrial or even glamorous feel to a home-renovation. Melbourne-based Eckersley Garden Architecture used stone to great effect in the indoors/outdoors space of a St. Kilda home. Like a private oasis, handmade Italian terracotta stones evoke a sense of old-world Mediterranean architectural paving. The stone flooring seamlessly connects the inside with the outside.
Pre-patterned pavers for effortless outdoorsrenovating The Cloisters® range of pre-patterned pavers from Boral is offered in a pack comprising three unpatterned pavers and one patterned paver, with geometric lines cut into the paver to add instant dimension and visual interest. This subtle pattern effortlessly adds a creative element to outdoors spaces and a modern texture underfoot that needs less styling to look finished. These large-format pavers are available in neutral Ivory and Slate Grey, which are ideal for creating a minimalist space that is easy to decorate and update as personal preferences and seasons change. There is growing interest from home-renovators to reduce lawn size to accommodate garden beds or alternative ground cover, such as pavers, so they can spend more time outdoors relaxing and entertaining. The Cloisters range provides a practical and easily maintained option for modern landscape designs. The Cloisters range also includes pavers for steps and garden edging for complete outdoor and garden designs.
Matching stone-look tiles and pavers Beaumont Tiles recently stocked Horizon, a stone-imitation range, in crema or light grey, with 20mm engineered porcelain outdoors-pavers and matching indoors 10mm tiles to create a seamless flow from alfresco areas to inside. The 10mm tile is available in two sizes: 298x600 and 600x600mm for indoors use; while the 20mm tile is 600x600mm and can be installed like a paver with three varied laying methods – Direct-Stick, Dry-Lay or VersiPave. Direct Stick: lay like normal tiles using standard certified glue on a solid concrete base. Use two people to lay the 600x600 20mm tile and use standard outdoors external grout. Dry Lay: Lay like normal pavers to a prepared compacted base. A team of two people is required to lay 600x600 20mm tiles. Between the pavers use standard outdoors locking sand, grass, or nothing at all depending on design. VersiPave: A new product that allows for faster and easier laying, and cheaper re-fits. Use two people to lay 600x600 20mm tiles into VersiPave plastic pedestals on top of a prepared concrete base. As a general rule, measure out area for pod/pedestals with one pedestal per paver required. Ensure all pedestals are levelled before laying. The key difference between indoors and outdoors tiles is their texture and finish: outdoors tiles need to be tougher, have hightextured finishes, and high slip-ratings due to being exposed to the elements; while indoors tiles are smoother to give a more luxurious feel under-foot.

Heavy-duty resin garden sheds in three sizes Suncast® storage sheds are available in contemporary designs with a range of modern surfaces, constructed from heavy-duty resin. These sheds are built tough to withstand Australian conditions, are maintenance free, stylish and make a practical addition to any backyard. There are two vertical sheds and one horizontal model. Distributed by Master Distributors; some assembly is required. The two vertical sheds are the BMS1500 [from $498] and the BMS6500 [from $1098]. The BMS1500 is a tall, slim shed made for tight spaces. Despite its narrow build it can store plenty of garden tools, toys, chair-cushions, sporting equipment and tools. The BMS6500 is taller and wider to store a lot more, with space for heavier items and long handled tools and garden accessories. The BMS3200 [from $498] is the horizontal shed in a space-saving design. You can use it store the mower, garbage bins, sporting goods and garden accessories. These sheds are available through Bunnings and online retailers such as Life Space, Cheap Sheds and Landera.
Matt-finish for a more natural look on outdoors timber decking, furniture and fixtures Timber care brand Feast Watson recently launched its new Matt Look decking finish, formulated to provide a more natural look on outdoors timber decking, furniture and fixtures. It offers a lower sheen to the “wet look”, and is available in three shades: Natural, Jarrah and Merbau, allowing you to enhance the natural-look of exterior timber as opposed to changing its colour. Matt Look Deck uses a modified, water-based oil formula that combines the advantages of both treatments – penetrating like oil but with the drying time of a water-based product. Its special formula offers exceptional water-, UV-, mould- and dirt-resistant properties. For best results, prepare your deck with Feast Watson Woodclean. This will remove surface contaminants that can impede absorption of the coating as well as rejuvenate both new and weathered timber. Then with Matt Look Deck apply two coats leaving a minimum of two hours between applications for maximum absorbency. Matt Look Deck is available in 1L, 4L and 10L sizes, along with a 250ml sample size to experiment with colour options.
Permeable pavers for driveways

The driveway often has a large footprint at the front of your home so it is important to get it right in order to make a strong impression and add value to the home; and you can go green with permeable-paving. More than just a paver, permeable pavements are the visible starting point to a simple, environment-effective system beneath the surface. When a permeable pavement system is installed, the series of drainage holes in the pavement surface allows water to filter through the surface layers, minimising stormwater run-off, downstream-flooding and pollution problems; with the added benefit of reducing the need for underground retention systems.

Permeable paving is a clever/essential choice if your driveway runs down to your house. In major downpours it allows the water to filter through the pavement surface and be redistributed to the underground water-table; versus the alternative which could see the water rushing down the slope of the driveway, over-filling the drain and flooding your garage. Moreover, some councils will credit permeable pavements as a percentage of the soft landscape-area on your property.
The loppers come into their own when faced with young, tough, green branches. The PowerGear X™ mechanism helps you effortlessly carve through branches up to 55mm in diameter; while the shears have optimised tool balance, control, and improved weight distribution to make those long days in the garden easier. One of the benefits of using pavers is the low maintenance involved as pavers expand and contract with the seasons and are less likely to crack. Regular preventative maintenance includes sealing sweeping, paving gap sand filling, water blasting and general upkeep, which will extend the lifespan of your driveway. If your driveway does start to show some lineal cracking, you can easily repair it inexpensively by simply lifting and replacing the damaged pavers when laid on a flexible base.
