Updated gas log heaters Cannon has updated their gas log heater collection for the 2014 season. Designed and manufactured in Australia they provide: rapid warmth; the enchantment and romance of a log fire without any mess; simple operation; plus high-energy efficiency and heat output. Their flexible flue system means there’s a Cannon Gas Log Heater installation option for almost every possible scenario. These heaters have a heating capacity of up to 80m2; with prices starting at $3,199. The Canterbury Classic range is available as either a Freestanding or Inbuilt unit. The Freestanding model can be powered by either LP or Natural Gas, both of which have a standard flue, an enhanced flame, double glass front and black finish. There are six variations in the range. The Fitzroy Profile is an Inbuilt range with a dual glass fascia as a standard inclusion and either a standard flue or Powerflue. There are four standard flue models that have a nonenhanced flame and feature: electronic controls; a choice of finish in black or platinum metallic; and powered by either LP or Natural Gas. There are also four Powerflue models that are differentiated by their enhanced flame and also feature: electronic controls; a choice of black or platinum metallic finish; and the option of LP or Natural Gas. The Powerflue models offer installation flexibility. They can be installed on any wall and vented horizontally from the back or side, vertically under the floor or through the roof; even in a multi-storey apartment they can be flued up through an internal wall or out under the floor.
New take on kitchen islands by Caesarstone Caesarstone has unveiled their Islands at Fuori Salone 2014, Milan [8-13 April], in collaboration with London-based design studio Raw Edges. Following a preview at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, Caesarstone has presented a further exploration of Islands with an interactive installation focusing on the domestic kitchen. Islands exhibit the design, beauty, quality and functionality of Caesarstone surfaces and reflect the signature creativity of Raw Edges’ work. Islands seek to reshape the typical interior arrangement by positioning the surface as the binding element of its design. Cabinetry and appliances are slotted into purpose-built voids within the Caesarstone surface itself instead of being placed atop or around it, thus highlighting the monolith’s value and functionality within a kitchen.

Height-adjustable kitchen benchtops When younger and older disabled or frail people cannot use kitchen facilities because of height or reach problems, the trend these days is to redesign the facilities around the person rather than require the person to adapt to the facilities. Over 80% of the radiant heat from the sun stays inside the building envelope once it has passed through the glass. This is great in winter; but when you want to stay cool in summer it is either uncomfortable, or the bills for air conditioning get expensive. Curtains do little to solve the problem as the heat is already trapped inside. External venetians offer a solution. Designer flood lighting Ernesto Gismondi is the founder and visionary behind Artemide, and is a leading contributor of product development, with particular focus on advanced technologies. Brick façade tiles Brick Facades are back in fashion with the range of brick tiles available from Robertsons Building Products [Melbourne] that make DIY and home extension projects easier and quicker to manage. This lightweight solution provides the illusion that genuine, heavier brickwork has been used. The Robertsons Brick Tile, that varies in thickness from 12mm to 18mm, is a clay product supplied in four different brick-sizes: US Standard 57 x 193mm; Roman 50 x 230mm; Australian Standard 76 x 230mm; and US Utility 92 x 295mm; and comes in four styles: Smooth; Textured; Metallic; and Glazed. The gaps between these tiles can be as wide as 10mm to replicate a brick wall or you can choose to reduce it for internal projects. Heating outdoor-lounges An alternative to the heater Extending the comfort of a home into the outdoors-areas is a now a firm renovating-trend. Outdoors-lounges, -kitchens and -entertainment areas are being enhanced with outdoor-fireplaces to extend the use of these homefacilities into the colder months. Pre-mixed cornice cement For the convenient installation or repair of cornice, CSR Gyprock has released a Pre-mixed Cornice Cement [$21.95]. The ‘wet’ formula means there’s no mixing of water and powder, allowing you to skip the messy part and get on with the renovation-job. The pre-mixed formula is as strong as regular plaster based cornice cement and ready to use straight out of the bucket. And there is a resealable lid, so the remainder of the mix can be saved and reused at a later date. Instructions on the bucket can be followed to install cornice in three easy steps: After selecting and cutting your cornice to size apply Gyprock Pre-Mixed Cornice Cement generously along the top and bottom edges and to the mitres. Each section should be buttered and fixed separately. Remove any surplus cement with a cornice tool and clean over the area with a brush or sponge. Fix the cornice to the ceiling and hold in place with temporary nails, allowing the cornice to dry for at least 16 hours before removing the nails.

Clothes dryers without that moisture problem The Smeg SACD8 8kg clothes dryer is a condenser dryer, which means there is no hot, moist air being expelled from the dryer into the laundry. A condenser dryer uses a heat exchange to cool the air and extract the water vapour before returning the air to the clothes drum to collect more water vapour and continue the process. Therefore there is no need for ducting or ventilation in the laundry area. Guide for selecting pavers Stabilising grass & gravel surfaces Pavers can offer a practical and durable solution for refreshing outdoor areas. Boral accordingly offers some tips to help you combine practicality and design to achieve your preferred look. First establish a clear idea of your garden’s intended overall look, as paving can form the foundation of a landscape-theme. This can vary greatly from a beach-inspired design to a contemporary Euro-feel. Next, consider the practical requirements of the space. For example, poolside pavers should be salt-resistant and non-slip; while driveway pavers must be able to withstand weight and heavy traffic. When selecting a colour, always look at pavers outside in the natural light. Choose pavers that are a similar colour to your internal floors to provide consistency from indoors through to the garden. To open up small spaces, select neutral coloured, large pavers. Laying pavers in a stretcher bond pattern across the width of a path will make it appear more substantial. Heat-pump clothes dryer The once energy-hungry clothes dryer has been reinvented, using half the energy of earlier models. Smeg has recently launched a heat pump dryer with a capacity of 7kg and 20 programs catering for cottons, denim, woollens, delicates, sportswear and shirts. The SAHP7 uses conventional heat pump technology – whereby the heat pump re-uses the hot air from within the dryer instead of expelling it like traditional vented electric-dryers. Advantages of the heat pump model are its lower energy consumption using about 45% less than vented models; and lack of condensation and heat emissions (which means there is no longer any need to duct the dryer).

Certified carbon-neutral bricks Brickworks Building Products has announced the launch of their new carbonneutral bricks and pavers under the Federal Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard. The bricks are available nationally under the Daniel Robertson brand and are manufactured by Brickworks’ subsidiary Austral Bricks at its Longford plant in Tasmania. The carbon-neutral certification of the range of pavers and bricks manufactured at Longford is largely achieved by the use of an alternative fuel for kiln-firing. That fuel is sawdust, a biomass material and a by-product of the Tasmanian timber industry. The use of low-emissions biomass, as opposed to fossil fuels, is largely responsible for the Longford plant’s low carbon dioxide emissions. Emissions from the biomass are just 215 tonnes per year - about the same as 12 average Australian households. The certification under the Carbon Neutral Program measures all emissions contributors, such as raw material extraction, onsite transport, product deliveries across Australia and internationally, water usage, packaging, waste and business operations - not just kiln emissions. All remaining greenhouse gas emissions are offset by purchasing carbon credits in Tasmanian projects, like tree planting under the Forests Alive program. RENOVATING • JUNE QTR 2014 • 37

15 seconds – that’s how long a professional burglar needs on average to get through a door or window into a house. Because security at home is so important it is worthwhile to invest in products with security features. A recently completed waterfront project in Sydney’s Drummoyne illustrates the creative new Axolotl coating techniques that can make a statement of any entrance. Designing a gardenbathroom Bringing the outdoors in is a rising trend in bathroom design: a large window framing lush green foliage; a glass door or louvres opening to the garden; or a bathroom opening completely to a pond, courtyard or patio. Concrete roofing tile in 12 colours Inspired by the latest trends, Monier Roofing’s new concrete tile colour palette contains a broader and more versatile range of colours. The new palette includes 12 new colours [not available in all states], allowing greater flexibility when it comes to the colour scheme of a home. The palette starts at the lighter end of the spectrum with a range of lighter tones in response to a shift to lighter-coloured roofs and the desire to manage climate change. The colour palette then deepens into tawny colours that are almost leatherlike and moves to the popular classics of mid-greys and earth tones, right through to black (Sambuca). Create a roof reminiscent of those seen in Spain, Italy and other parts of old-Europe Bristile Roofing now offers the Medio Curva from La Escandella Ceramica, a roof tile designed for architectural projects seeking to capture the distinctive and exquisite character of mission-style roofs that have crowned homes, civic buildings and architectural landmarks for centuries. Festool has revamped its range of dust-extractors by introducing the new CTL MINI/MIDI generation with up to 40% more suction power, and the new CT 17 E universal extractor. The 40% greater suction power of the new mobile CTL MINI and MIDI is attributed to the combination of 3,700 l/min suction capacity, 240 mbar vacuum and a special tapered suction hose. These two compact extractors are ideal for assembly, installation and renovation applications and are equipped with a number of intelligent features such as a hose holder for shorter set-up times; self-clean filter bags for constant suction power; and they are compatible with the SYS T-LOC system which can be attached to the top.

The Kaldewei Studio Bath provides a full-size bath solution which will fit into a 600mm space behind the door [at the foot end], opening into a full width bath to accommodate the bather in complete comfort. Inspired by the simplicity of Scandinavian furnishings, Trapezio is the vision of Sandro Meneghello and Marco Paolelli of Italian design firm Meneghello Paolelli Associati. Crafted in natural oak, the organic texture of this beautiful structure is complemented by either the Piattone or Cow bench basin. The Piattone basin delivers an opulent and refined look with its wide base and thin rim, reflecting the expertise of Art Ceram’s advanced manufacturing capabilities. WaterGate® Leaf Guard The heavy-duty WaterGate® collection from Fielders is made from zinc, a durable, corrosion resistant material that is ideal for the Australian climate. It can be easily installed and comprises three different product options. GUTTER Leaf Guard is a high-strength leaf guard for standard 125mm wide gutters, suited to both corrugated and tiled roofs. Take care with asbestos Asbestos is a life threatening material and a recognised cause of severe illness. It becomes a health risk when asbestos fibres are released into the air and breathed in. Asbestos inspections are the newest addition to the range of services offered by Jim’s Building Inspections. Asbestos which is in a degraded, damaged or deteriorated condition has greater potential to release airborne fibres, and therefore presents a significant health risk. Asbestos is likely to be present in any Australian house or building construction prior to 1985. Even in newer buildings constructed up until 2003 and after that time where second-hand or reclaimed building materials were used, there may be an asbestos risk. There are many types of asbestos that can be found including asbestos tiling; asbestos roofing; asbestos sheets in walls; and asbestos ceilings. Most people cannot confidently identify asbestos in their home. A professional asbestos inspection is the only way to safely identify asbestos. It is strongly recommended that anyone about to start a renovation or demolition gets an asbestos risk assessment and sampling completed as they may otherwise expose themselves, their families and any contractors to an asbestos hazard. Under new national harmonised workplace safety laws in all states, except Victoria and Western Australia, all managers of workplaces are now required by law to assess the risk of asbestos present in any workplace, and to develop an asbestos register and an asbestos management plan if it is found. Builders and Tradies who are conducting renovations and extensions are effectively creating a workplace and therefore must also, in conjunction with the building owner, conduct asbestos testing and sampling prior to commencing works.

Smeg has seen significant growth in its compact appliances that are the standard 600mm wide but just 450mm high, designed to be installed in a bank either at the ‘midway point’ (chest or eye level) or underbench. The range comprises: convection oven with microwave [$3290]; combi steam/ convection oven [$4490]; dedicated steam oven [$3290]; microwave oven with grill function [$2790]; and a built-in coffee machine [$4290]. These appliances are offered in two distinct design aesthetics: the Classic all stainless steel (in the kitchen pictured); and the contemporary Linear in stainless steel and glass. Each appliance, be it Classic or Linear, has matching aesthetics to provide that homogeneous look to a kitchen.
Bosch has released their intelligent new combination induction cookers in 60cm [PIT651F17E, $2099] and 80cm [PIT851F17E, $2499] models. These CombiInduction cooktops feature two traditional round zones and two bridgeable zones with cross-electromagnetic coils. These are for cooking with large pots and pans, including roasting trays and teppanyaki plates. The cross-electromagnetic coils also ensure precise detection of the cooking utensils used. Depending on the size and shape of the pot or pan, either one coil or two coils can be activated for convenient cooking. The CombiZone function allows you to combine two smaller cooking zones into a single, large cooking area at the touch of a button; while MoveMode allows for a transition between fast boiling on the front-zone and simmering on the rear with a simple slide of the pot; and PowerBoost rapidly increases temperature levels. Integrating with modern kitchen-design, these frameless cooktops are sleek and contemporary in design with bevelled front and side edges.
The owners of the kitchen pictured, designed by Kim Duffin of Sublime Architectural Interiors, wanted to take full advantage of natural light and surrounding rural views. While the midpoint bank of appliances satisfied the ergonomics, ventilation posed a different hurdle. British interior designer Kelly Hoppen has entered the world of bathroomware with a fresh and impressive collection of tapware, distributed in Australia through Paco Jaanson. Her latest collection of basin mixers employs her signature style of clean lines and sleek simplicity. The collection titled KH Zero 2 is aerodynamic in form and has been designed to add a touch of luxury to any bathroom. This contemporary bathroom collection features soft curvaceous shapes and functional design. Prices start at $799 with the collection available nationwide from June 2014.
The bathtub embraces Giovanna Talocci’s talent, and the versatility of the functions, such as the concealed taps and water blade, enhance the pleasure of a soaking bath. Swiss hotel bathroom luxury Opened in December 2013, the Swiss Chedi hotel subtly blends tradition with modernity. Inspired by the charm of Swiss grand hotels and chalets, it is built in an alpine architectural-style. Natural materials such as stone, polished wood and supple leather are paired with Asian features. The bathrooms were fitted with the free-standing Centro Duo Oval bath alongside the Kusatsu Pool inspired by Japanese bathing culture and the Conopool, all made from Kaldewei’s 3.5 mm steel enamel. This hard-wearing material ensures that the surface looks as new even after years of daily use. The spa area and the luxury apartments present a new initiative from Kaldewei: the generously proportioned Conopool with Vivo Turbo whirl system offering enjoyable bathing in a luxury pool.

Latest Hebel wall panels
Quicksmart Homes has launched its new Hybrid House. Using its experience in modular products in the hotel, medical and student housing sectors, the Hybrid House is now available to the commercial construction industry. The Hybrid House technology allows house builders to benefit from the time and cost savings associated with modular building without affecting the external appearance of the house. According to Quicksmart Homes, the Hybrid offers high quality house-building at a lower price than traditional construction methods. Hybrid modules allow the site-build to happen faster and more cost effectively. Each building has the potential to be purpose built for the site to take advantage of sustainable methods of design and orientation. They claim to have the ability to bring the cost and quality benefits of factory-built buildings to any design or location of house.
CSR Hebel has launched their new PowerPanel XL for houses and low-rise residential external wall applications. Being 20% lighter than Hebel’s current 75mm panel, PowerPanel XL allows for faster installation and less labour compared to traditional masonry construction techniques. Hebel have also streamlined the construction process by developing a clever perforated top hat and easierto-fix screws to speed up installation time. This new system allows for the external walls to be installed in around 3-4 days, cutting significant time when compared to other masonry systems.
Part modular and part traditional construction, the Hybrid House incorporates high-end, elegant kitchens and bathrooms, allowing versatility in its application to everyday living. Each Hybrid House is delivered on-site as one complete weather-proofed sealed module ready to connect to all drainage and services as well as plugand-play all electrical components. A development planned for the Hunter Valley in NSW has shown a 25% saving over the conventional building costs of over one hundred units.
The Hebel PowerPanel XL External Wall System for houses and low-rise multi-residential applications has been designed for homes built using timber or steel framing, including home extensions and second storey additions. PowerPanel XL is also suitable for the re-cladding of existing homes. The system comprises 75mm thick, steel-reinforced Hebel panels, fixed vertically to the horizontal perforated battens, which are directly attached to the load-bearing frame. CSR claims that a 75mm thick Hebel PowerPanel XL panel has up to 3 times the insulation R-value of a traditional 110mm brick. This combination of thermal resistance and thermal mass provides a comfortable and efficient living environment, reducing reliance on heating and cooling appliances.
Bathing chair for disabilities A bathing chair that lowers and raises people with disabilities and infirmities so they can safely enter and leave the bath has been introduced by Safe Bath Australasia. The battery-powered Aqua Joy Bath Lift can reduce substantially the costs of renovating homes to suit people with disabilities because it can fit without modification into existing baths, including walk-in, spa and traditional types. Instead of renovating or building an entirely new bathroom, an Aqua Joy Bath Lift is simply placed inside an existing bath and [at the push of a button] the bather sitting on it moves into and out of the bath. The swivel seat projects over the lip of the bath so users can move easily onto it; then it slides back over the bath to place the occupant into the bath. It is ideal for people who use wheelchairs, scooters and walkers. Transferring from a wheelchair to the bath-lift is unproblematic because the transfer is made at the same level between the two seats. One charge generally lasts for 15 lifts; but it will not lower unless there is sufficient charge to rise back to the top of the bath. Aqua Joy Bath Lifts are both portable and versatile. Woodworkers have recently added the “Chateau” door to their already impressive range of European styled entries.
