Room sealed flued gas space heaters

Two compact portable electric room-heaters

The new Paloma energy efficient 4.8-star gas-flued space heaters are designed and manufactured in Japan by Paloma, international experts in gas appliances for over 100 years. As these heaters are room-sealed, the coaxial flue system draws in fresh air and pushes all flue exhaust outside the home, ensuring zero indoor emissions. Safety features include automatic shut-off in the event of overheating, gas or power failure; plus a filter-clean warning. The dual timers can be set to turn the heater on or off, operating automatically at two separate periods of day – for cold mornings or coming home at the end of the day. The heater automatically operates up to one hour prior to the programmed starting time so the room is at the required temperature at the programmed-ON time.

Improved technology, safety and efficiency make ceramic heaters ideal for staying cosy indoors during the cooler months. The streamlined Kambrook 2000-watt KCE340 Ceramic Tower Heater [$119.95] operates at a low surface temperature and is self-regulating, creating a safe and energy efficient source of warmth. With an LCD digital display panel including room temperature display, it includes two heat settings, auto and fan only settings and an oscillating action to better circulate heat. The tower also includes an eight hour timer and can be adjusted via a handy remote control. By heating the air and distributing warmth around the room, fan heaters achieve excellent heat coverage. Kambrook’s 2400-watt KFH660 Upright Fan Heater [$49.95] features a compact design with two heat settings and a fan-only setting. Its variable thermostat provides greater control as well as oscillation for more evenly distributed heat throughout the room. As with all Kambrook heaters, these two designs are ThermoGuard protected and feature a tip-over cut-out switch ensuring maximum safety.

There are two domestic options: the 15MJ model is suited to small to medium sized homes; while the 25MJ model is for mid- to larger-sized residences. The heaters are quiet to run and are designed with a simple-to-use control pad. They have a humidifier tray that can be filled with water to raise the humidity level in the room, making it feel warmer and more comfortable. Other features include: available for natural gas and LPG; one-touch electronic ignition; low standby power usage; economy mode that increases the efficiency of the heater; adjustable room temperature; child lock; and flue kits and accessories for multiple installation options so they can be installed anywhere in the home.

EcoSmart Fire’s XL burner range [from The Fire Company] has become a popular and creative design tool for interior designers, builders, specifiers and renovators. And the XL burners are being used in myriad ways, both inside and outside the home. Boards were then cut, sawn and dressed, followed by a treatment using a range of coating products to achieve the best colour and surface finish. Quick-Step also used other effects like brushing, saw cuts, burning, scrapping and marking in order to create the desired finish and look.

Quick-Step Flooring Australia recently had the opportunity to create three new products for the Largo laminate range in Australia. Knowing there was a demand in Australia for wider boards with a matt finish in an Australian species, they scoured three Australian states to find the perfect timber, from lumber yards to telegraph poles, new materials and recycled materials, which were then examined and cross sectioned.

The finally selected boards were then sent to Quick-Step HQ in Belgium, where the panels were scanned and converted into digital data. Prior to printing, the initial drafts were examined to fine-tune the contrast and saturation. Finally, the gloss level was selected and the bevel detail agreed to. The endresults were three impressive new products in the Largo range: Blackbutt, Spotted Gum and Recycled Hardwood.

Toilet suite installation flexibility for last-minute layout changes Caroma’s innovative Orbital® Technology is an ideal installation solution for renovating, retrofitting existing bathrooms or building a new bathroom. Designed to overcome set-out compatibility issues, it makes the plumber’s job easier and increases the range of options available when choosing a toilet suite. Orbital Technology offers the capability to extend a toilet set-out to any position up to a 50mm radius. By rotating the upper and lower bodies, the connector assists in adapting to a wider range of set-outs and makes it easier for plumbers to install a toilet suite to existing pipework, saving both time and money. From the time a slab is poured, to when the toilet is installed, the specified set out often changes; or other factors such as tileselection may affect the fit-out. Following on from the success of the original Caroma Orbital Connector, which is suitable for close coupled toilet suites, the new Uni-Orbital Connector provides increased installation exclusively for Caroma wall faced toilet suites. A device to help DIYrenovators lay tiles flat The most common mistake in Tiling is unevenness, which is not just an eyesore but often a trip-hazard. A South Australian tiler, drawing on four decades of knowhow, accordingly developed the Simple Accurate Levelling System (SALS). It is a plastic clamp and washer device that tightens two tiles together, without any tile movement or scratching of the tiles. Tiles can be laid perfectly flat with no unsightly lips or trip-hazards. This system also utilises a specially-formulated adhesive.

Decorative switches A new range of decorative switches is available from Memory Lane in Ascot Vale, Melbourne. The switches are ideal for fitting into high end glass kitchen splashbacks. Each switch has an acrylic surround in a bright red, a black, a grey or a white and these can be matched with either a white or grey inner mechanism to offer many choices. The mechanisms for the switches are all good quality HPM brand and the options range from 1 gang switches up to 6 gang as well as double powerpoints. To go with the new switches is a new push button 450VA dimming mechanism. The push button dimmer does not require an extra on/off switch, the first push turns on the light and then holding down the button will dim the lights. DIY replacement mixer-tap system for old leaking taps and showers In many older homes leaking showers and taps can be a headache. In the shower it often starts with a few drips but eventually becomes worse. “Band-Aid” fixes like tightening the tap handles can sometimes lead to plumbing-damage; and getting a plumber to “reseat” the washers can sometimes be more than you budgeted for; and if this has already been done in an earlier plumber’s call [and cannot be done a second time] you may have to rip the tiles off, pull the wall out a bit and then replace the breech. This may cost around $2500! But there is a much more economical alternative.

DIY floor levelling device for concrete screeding When it comes to creating a level surface on which to lay timber flooring or tiles, UK inventor Robert McConnell has developed an answer as straightforward as A-B-C. Robert’s simple yet clever invention known as the Z-level allows tilers, Tradies and DIY-renovators to rectify uneven floors while taking the effort and expense out of levelling the surface. Often encountered in older houses and even in recently built homes, some floors are so uneven that tiles and timber flooring cannot be laid until the surface is evened-out or flattened. Z-level is a small galvanised metal ‘Z’ shape which can be used alongside self-levelling/flooring compound that has been mixed with up to 50% sand, to create a time-saving and cost-effective flat surface. The special shape of the Z-level provides both strength and flexibility to the person using it. You can adjust each individual ‘Z’ shaped device to meet the exact height requirements in various points on the floor to create a flat/level surface. Combination insulation and plasterboard

Adhesives for building and renovating Siegware Aust has recently introduced a range of industrial-grade adhesives from Austrian company Ramsauer. The new Kraftfix 655 is a silicone- and isocyanate-free powder adhesive that cures virtually without shrinkage and without odour. It provides excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates, and can be used for securing glass panes into wooden and plastic frames. The product is also suitable for gluing mirrors. Another Ramsauer product, 811, is predominantly closed-cell PU foam which exhibits excellent adhesion to concrete, brickwork, cement, wood, chip board, plasterboard, porous concrete and plastic materials.

Most homeowners and renovators understand the value of wall and ceiling insulation as a fundamental feature of energy-efficient dwellings. Insulation prevents heat loss from a home in winter, and helps block unwanted heat from entering premises in summer. This will influence your choice of which paver to use and how many are required for the project. 2. Choose your paver, making sure the pavers you select are slip resistant, especially when wet. 3. Set up a string line of where your path will lead and then, with spray paint, mark the area to be excavated. 4. Clear the space you want to lay your garden path in. This means removing grass, cutting out turf, concrete, gravel, etc; and consider how deep you need to excavate. 5. Prepare your bush sand and cement mix to a 6:1 ratio. 6. Using the sand and cement mix, place the pavers at the desired pattern. Once you’ve placed the first paver, set up parallel string lines to help keep the rest of the pavers in line with the first. 7. Tap each paver down with a rubber mallet to make level. 8. Sweep in jointing sand between adjourning pavers. 9. Each year in Australia around 360 children suffer scald burns requiring admission to hospital, due to exposure to hot tap water. The cartridge has a plus (+) and minus (-) sign printed on the integrated ring which can be easily moved towards the relevant symbol to adjust the temperature. Caroma recommends that Tradies adjust the anti-scald cartridge in small increments until the ideal maximum water temperature is reached. These cartridges also come with the ability to adjust the water flow (not suitable for bath mixers). By reducing the water flow, wastage is decreased and splashing from the basin is eliminated. Hitachi has released two new heat guns that provide a no fuss solution to paint-removal, plastic-welding and -bending, defrosting and plastic shrink wrapping for Tradies and DIYers. The quick and easy heat selection switch on the RH600T provides 450°C and 600°C of hot air. The convenient quick cooling button delivers a shot of cool air (50°C) to speed-up the cooling down process when required. This model has a soft-grip slim handle; plus a flat base for a stable support area whenever used in an upright position. The hotter model, the RH650V, offers temperatures from 50°C all the way up to 650°C. It also utilises a fully variable air velocity control that can maintain speeds between 250 and 500 litres per minute. All of these settings can be controlled through a range of easy-use buttons and have clear details displayed on the LCD-readout. This model also has a soft-grip slim handle for ease of use; and a flat base to increase support while using it in an upright position. Portable dewatering pump for building sites Australian Pump Industries have introduced a Japanese-made lightweight submersible single phase pump designed for general dewatering projects in building and construction. Tsurumi’s LB series was specifically designed for draining building and civil engineering sites. The LB-480, weighing in at only 10kg, produces flows of up to 200 litres per minute, and maximum lifts, or vertical head of 10.5m. The pump is powered by a single phase 0.48kW, capacitor start electric motor, and comes with 5m of heavy duty submersible cable. The pump’s motor is a dry type squirrel cage induction motor housed in a watertight casing. It conforms to class E insulation and the LB-480 can be used in ambient temperatures of up to 40 degrees C. The LB-480 has a semi vortex design impeller that features a “high-gap structure” that minimises impeller lock. Impeller lock can occur when the pump sucks in a large amount of sand at once. The high-gap structure allows the pump to clear itself. It is highly resistant to abrasion, and performance is largely unaffected by minor wear. The impeller is an open style, allowing solids in suspension to easily pass through the pump. Another important Tsurumi feature is an anti-wicking block provided at the cable entry section of the motor chamber. Even if the cable jacket becomes damaged, or the tip of the cable is accidentally immersed in water, this device prevents water from travelling into the motor chamber through capillary action. 58 • RENOVATING • RENOVATING QTR 2014

Weather- and noiseinsulated windows to replace old-style, doublehung timber windows In the last 15 to 20 years the shift to living in the centre of the city or in the inner-suburbs has become as strong as the 1960s shift to the edge of the city to live on a quarter acre block. The reversal has been driven primarily by the desire to live a more cosmopolitan lifestyle with the convenience of living closer to work. Many single- or double-fronted older-style houses are being renovated to include modern day living conveniences. Some of the disadvantages to overcome are traffic noise, security and historical overlays. Often there are only two windows plus the front-door facing a busy street; or in a double story house there might be two more windows upstairs. Aged, draughty windows and doors not only let cold air into the house; noise comes in as well. Most older-style windows are double hung whereby one window pane slides over the other vertically. It is very difficult to completely seal these windows. Paarhammer have accordingly introduced a ‘look-alike’ which in essence is a technologically-advanced tilt-andturn window with a horizontal bar. Bathroom ventilation, lighting & heating guide Selecting a ventilation unit for your bathroom is not about onesize-fits-all. Having adequate exhaust capacity is important to prevent the build-up of stale air, condensation and mildew; while the heating and lighting requirements differ from one bathroom to the next. Complementing a bathroom’s look and working to a budget are other key considerations. Combining traditional furniture with modern tapware in the bathroom In the recently built Hotel Mira Moon, Hong Kong, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders combined themes taken from the tale of the Moon Goddess and her Jade Rabbit with traditional craftsmanship and modern elements. A sensual bathroom collection from Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe SE, was selected for the hotel’s bathrooms. The fixtures designed by Patricia Urquiola appear as though they were naturally grown, with soft shapes transcending into wide surfaces and melding with the remaining bathroom décor to create harmony. In the marble bathrooms the stand-alone Axor Urquiola bath tub mixer is combined at the wash-basin with Hansgrohe Metris fixtures, with the high spout of the mixer providing ample space. The designers relied on Chinese craftsmanship to develop the vast array of woodwork, such as the highly ornamental ceiling and wall coverings. Wood carvings, ceramics, rich textiles, and orange-red colour accents represent the link to time-honoured tradition. After spending most of its life as an indoors wood-burning fireplace, the conversion to a bioethanol-fuelled outdoor-fireplace started with a thorough cleaning. Not only was the inside covered in messy soot, but the mandarin red enamel had lost its lustre. But installing the BK5 bioethanol burner was as simple as placing it inside the fireplace and surrounding it with rolled marble decorative stones. The final step to this retro conversion was simply closing the flue so all of the heat produced by the e-NRG bioethanol fuel wouldn’t escape up the chimney. Instead it radiates off the interior curved belly and pushes the heat directly out. The merging of an old design with new technology proved seamless.

Your entrance door should not only look good but work well. After choosing the right design, sealing and security are the main issues for front doors. Sealing well could mean that your door is double rebated with rubber seals all around. This reduces draughts to almost zero and your energy bills will also reduce, especially if glass components are double- or triple-glazed. An innovative, extensive range of peeland-stick wallpaper that can also be applied to door and window frames, kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, furniture-pieces and appliances has recently been launched in Australia. Made in Korea, 1230mm wide, up to 50m in length, the self-adhesive PVC covering requires no paste, is waterproof and therefore washable, and goes on bubble-free. If you want to apply it to a brick-wall or a tile-covered wall, you should first cover a sheet of MDF or acrylic with the wallpaper and then attach the MDF/acrylic to the wall with appropriate glue such as Liquid Nails. This also gives you the option of changing those covered sheets at a later date for a different look. For example, a marble-design covering would look more realistic as a 50cm wide MDF “column” rather than a covering over an entire wall. You could apply a different patterned covering between marble-columns placed at either ends of the room. There are hundreds of décors to select from comprising: patterns and colours; metallics, including rust-effects; crocodile-skin and other art-leathers; timber-looks and tiles; bricks, stones and marbles; stucco; etc. Prices per square metre range from $29 through to $79. The range is continually being added to by the factories in Korea; and you can even design your own custom-wallpaper utilising favourite scenes, images from your family-album, and own-designs from your creative juices. The product allows you to coordinate interior décors by being able to apply it to appliances, door and window frames, and furniture pieces. door frames. Utilising a heat-gun allows you to “shrink-wrap” the covering over mouldings and odd shapes. Or you can change the look of a kitchen by applying the product to the cabinet doors and contrast this with an alternative design for the splashback. Customised blinds have proven to be a popular application of this state-of-the-art decorative technology, with the UV, solventfree, ink holding its colour for years without fading.
