The panels which would ultimately be used were hand-selected from a large quantity of samples. Boards were then cut, sawn and dressed, followed by a treatment using a range of coating products to achieve the best colour and surface finish. Quick-Step also used other effects like brushing, saw cuts, burning, scrapping and marking in order to create the desired finish and look.

Quick-Step Flooring Australia recently had the opportunity to create three new products for the Largo laminate range in Australia. Knowing there was a demand in Australia for wider boards with a matt finish in an Australian species, they scoured three Australian states to find the perfect timber, from lumber yards to telegraph poles, new materials and recycled materials, which were then examined and cross sectioned.

The finally selected boards were then sent to Quick-Step HQ in Belgium, where the panels were scanned and converted into digital data. Prior to printing, the initial drafts were examined to fine-tune the contrast and saturation. Finally, the gloss level was selected and the bevel detail agreed to. The endresults were three impressive new products in the Largo range: Blackbutt, Spotted Gum and Recycled Hardwood.

An efficient downlight
The newly developed Cannon Canterbury Classic Inbuilt gas log heater [designed and manufactured in Australia] offers significant potential for home-renovators. Its shallow depth (requirement of only 363mm), means it is an excellent option for where space is tight. This particular model is also a solution for retrofitting into existing fireplace voids and provides an attractive replacement to dated and visually uninspiring gas/oil space heaters. Taking up the option of a 50mm spacer kit will further trim the depth space requirement to 313mm and allow installation into even the shallowest fireplace voids. If the location for the heater has combustible surfaces such as timber or plasterboard there is a mock installation kit available. This kit allows a qualified installer to create a safe structure to house the heater in four relatively simple steps: building a frame; installation of self-supported flue; frame enclosure; and attachment of the mock fireplace kit to the heater.
Designed to work with the Clipsal 32E450 Universal Dimmer Series, Clipsal LD Series LED Downlights overcome the frustration of flickering and lag often caused by incompatible components. The LD Series is energy efficient; has a high lumen output; and a long life span of 30,000 hours making the inconvenience of regularly changing globes a thing of the past. A wide lip allows for easier retrofitting and its low-profile heat-sink (11W only) allows for installation in restricted ceiling cavities. For best results follow this method: 1.
Using a wire brush or sandpaper, remove any loose rust and flaking paint.
2.
Wash the metal thoroughly with a detergent solution to remove any grease or dirt that could affect paint adhesion. Rinse with fresh water and allow surface to dry completely.

Place the cleaned item on a drop sheet.
4.
Using a good-quality brush, apply an even coat of Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint. The second coat can be applied after four hours. If the item is made from bare zinc, aluminium or galvanised metal, substitute with Hammerite Direct to Galvanised Metal Paint. A device to help DIYrenovators lay tiles flat The most common mistake in Tiling is unevenness, which is not just an eyesore but often a trip-hazard. A South Australian tiler, drawing on four decades of knowhow, accordingly developed the Simple Accurate Levelling System (SALS). It is a plastic clamp and washer device that tightens two tiles together, without any tile movement or scratching of the tiles. Tiles can be laid perfectly flat with no unsightly lips or trip-hazards. This system also utilises a specially-formulated adhesive.
Decorative switches A new range of decorative switches is available from Memory Lane in Ascot Vale, Melbourne. The switches are ideal for fitting into high end glass kitchen splashbacks. Each switch has an acrylic surround in a bright red, a black, a grey or a white and these can be matched with either a white or grey inner mechanism to offer many choices. The mechanisms for the switches are all good quality HPM brand and the options range from 1 gang switches up to 6 gang as well as double powerpoints. To go with the new switches is a new push button 450VA dimming mechanism. The push button dimmer does not require an extra on/off switch, the first push turns on the light and then holding down the button will dim the lights. As with the switches the push button dimmers come in the grey or white finish. These new switches are proving popular in modern style kitchens as well as an eclectic decorating feature in large family rooms where decorators are mixing them with modern artworks.
Over the past couple of decades Tiling has gone from using predominantly small 6 inch X 6 inch tiles to large format 600mm X 600mm polished tiles, which are often tricky to lay. If your floors or walls aren’t completely flat it’s hard to get that even finish you want. But it’s not just an aesthetic issue; it can also be a safety issue, a tripping-issue. These new SALS help DIY-renovators to lay tiles so accurately they look like sheets of glass, with the grout-joints not getting dirty and remaining easy to clean. And for Tradies, the system makes laying tiles less stressful on the body and the mind; and more professional. DIY replacement mixer-tap system for old leaking taps and showers In many older homes leaking showers and taps can be a headache. In the shower it often starts with a few drips but eventually becomes worse. “Band-Aid” fixes like tightening the tap handles can sometimes lead to plumbing-damage; and getting a plumber to “reseat” the washers can sometimes be more than you budgeted for; and if this has already been done in an earlier plumber’s call [and cannot be done a second time] you may have to rip the tiles off, pull the wall out a bit and then replace the breech. This may cost around $2500! But there is a much more economical alternative.

An alarm that protects from carbon monoxide poisoning Carbon monoxide is often produced in houses with older motor vehicles and gas-powered heaters and cooking equipment. Those who have been exposed to carbon monoxide may show signs of nausea, fatigue, vomiting and headache or in extreme cases unconsciousness and death. DIY floor levelling device for concrete screeding When it comes to creating a level surface on which to lay timber flooring or tiles, UK inventor Robert McConnell has developed an answer as straightforward as A-B-C. Robert’s simple yet clever invention known as the Z-level allows tilers, Tradies and DIY-renovators to rectify uneven floors while taking the effort and expense out of levelling the surface. Often encountered in older houses and even in recently built homes, some floors are so uneven that tiles and timber flooring cannot be laid until the surface is evened-out or flattened. Z-level is a small galvanised metal ‘Z’ shape which can be used alongside self-levelling/flooring compound that has been mixed with up to 50% sand, to create a time-saving and cost-effective flat surface. The special shape of the Z-level provides both strength and flexibility to the person using it. You can adjust each individual ‘Z’ shaped device to meet the exact height requirements in various points on the floor to create a flat/level surface. Concrete masonry blocks Austral Masonry has expanded its portfolio of Australian-made, premium masonry blocks with the GB Aspect range. The three lines produce a similar aesthetic to ceramic tiles, which are becoming increasingly used as feature walls in contemporary homes and commercial designs. Strong and fast adhesive Sika MaxTack is an ultra-quick, ultra-strong water-based adhesive, and is a worthy addition to the home tool kit. It offers a superfast initial “grab-time”, forming a strong bond after just 3-seconds of applied pressure. Strong initial grab means there is no need to use nails, vices or weights to hold the bond in place. Yet, best of all, items remain repositionable for up to 5-minutes allowing perfect alignment to be achieved. Suitable for indoors and covered outdoors use, it is ideal for a range of applications including woodwork, attaching skirting boards and cornices, interior cladding, shelving and some craft projects. MaxTack can be cleaned with water and, once dried, is easily coated with water-based paints. It comes in two sizes: 100ml for $6.97 and 300ml for $9.98.
The range comes in a selection of colours including pebble, russet, shale, sand, porcelain, nickel, pewter and limestone. Building with concrete masonry also offers a number of additional benefits due to their high structural strength, low embodied energy and good thermal mass properties which enables the material to slow the transfer of temperature fluctuations from external sources into internal living areas.
Combination insulation and plasterboard
Adhesives for building and renovating Siegware Aust has recently introduced a range of industrial-grade adhesives from Austrian company Ramsauer. The new Kraftfix 655 is a silicone- and isocyanate-free powder adhesive that cures virtually without shrinkage and without odour. It provides excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates, and can be used for securing glass panes into wooden and plastic frames. The product is also suitable for gluing mirrors. Another Ramsauer product, 811, is predominantly closed-cell PU foam which exhibits excellent adhesion to concrete, brickwork, cement, wood, chip board, plasterboard, porous concrete and plastic materials.
Most homeowners and renovators understand the value of wall and ceiling insulation as a fundamental feature of energy-efficient dwellings. Insulation prevents heat loss from a home in winter, and helps block unwanted heat from entering premises in summer. However, there are different kinds of insulation with different levels of performance and effectiveness, including cutting-edge designs that overturn traditional systems and raise thermal efficiency to a whole new level, such as the range of Kooltherm® panels, produced by Kingspan Insulation. They can also be used for paved courtyards and entertaining areas – so your garden or side path can lead seamlessly into the next outdoor space. Adbri Masonry’s Boulevard® pavers are ideal for DIY projects. StepByStep® instructions by Adbri Masonry and Jason Hodge: 1. Measure the length and width of the area you want to transform. This will influence your choice of which paver to use and how many are required for the project. 2. Choose your paver, making sure the pavers you select are slip resistant, especially when wet. 3. Set up a string line of where your path will lead and then, with spray paint, mark the area to be excavated. 4. Clear the space you want to lay your garden path in. This means removing grass, cutting out turf, concrete, gravel, etc; and consider how deep you need to excavate. 5. Prepare your bush sand and cement mix to a 6:1 ratio. 6. Using the sand and cement mix, place the pavers at the desired pattern. Once you’ve placed the first paver, set up parallel string lines to help keep the rest of the pavers in line with the first. 7. Tap each paver down with a rubber mallet to make level. 8. Sweep in jointing sand between adjourning pavers. 9. Each year in Australia around 360 children suffer scald burns requiring admission to hospital, due to exposure to hot tap water. The elderly and people with disabilities are also at risk of such burns. Caroma and Dorf have addressed this risk by adding an innovative feature to specific mixer tap ranges. These selected mixers include an adjustable cartridge with an inbuilt safety function that limits the rotation of the handle, restricting very hot water from flowing out of the mixer. This anti-scald feature means that if the handle can only be turned so far, the water temperature can be set at a chosen maximum level and cannot increase further. Setting the maximum temperature is quick and simple. The cartridge has a plus (+) and minus (-) sign printed on the integrated ring which can be easily moved towards the relevant symbol to adjust the temperature. This will restrict how far the handle can turn and thus set the maximum temperature. Caroma recommends that Tradies adjust the anti-scald cartridge in small increments until the ideal maximum water temperature is reached. These cartridges also come with the ability to adjust the water flow (not suitable for bath mixers). By reducing the water flow, wastage is decreased and splashing from the basin is eliminated. Portable dewatering pump for building sites Australian Pump Industries have introduced a Japanese-made lightweight submersible single phase pump designed for general dewatering projects in building and construction. Tsurumi’s LB series was specifically designed for draining building and civil engineering sites. The LB-480, weighing in at only 10kg, produces flows of up to 200 litres per minute, and maximum lifts, or vertical head of 10.5m. The pump is powered by a single phase 0.48kW, capacitor start electric motor, and comes with 5m of heavy duty submersible cable. The pump’s motor is a dry type squirrel cage induction motor housed in a watertight casing. It conforms to class E insulation and the LB-480 can be used in ambient temperatures of up to 40 degrees C. The LB-480 has a semi vortex design impeller that features a “high-gap structure” that minimises impeller lock. Impeller lock can occur when the pump sucks in a large amount of sand at once. The high-gap structure allows the pump to clear itself. It is highly resistant to abrasion, and performance is largely unaffected by minor wear. The impeller is an open style, allowing solids in suspension to easily pass through the pump. Another important Tsurumi feature is an anti-wicking block provided at the cable entry section of the motor chamber. Even if the cable jacket becomes damaged, or the tip of the cable is accidentally immersed in water, this device prevents water from travelling into the motor chamber through capillary action. 58 • RENOVATING • SEPTEMBER QTR 2014

In the last 15 to 20 years the shift to living in the centre of the city or in the inner-suburbs has become as strong as the 1960s shift to the edge of the city to live on a quarter acre block. The reversal has been driven primarily by the desire to live a more cosmopolitan lifestyle with the convenience of living closer to work. Many single- or double-fronted older-style houses are being renovated to include modern day living conveniences. Some of the disadvantages to overcome are traffic noise, security and historical overlays. Often there are only two windows plus the front-door facing a busy street; or in a double story house there might be two more windows upstairs. Aged, draughty windows and doors not only let cold air into the house; noise comes in as well. Most older-style windows are double hung whereby one window pane slides over the other vertically. Combining traditional furniture with modern tapware in the bathroom In the recently built Hotel Mira Moon, Hong Kong, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders combined themes taken from the tale of the Moon Goddess and her Jade Rabbit with traditional craftsmanship and modern elements. A sensual bathroom collection from Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe SE, was selected for the hotel’s bathrooms. The fixtures designed by Patricia Urquiola appear as though they were naturally grown, with soft shapes transcending into wide surfaces and melding with the remaining bathroom décor to create harmony. In the marble bathrooms the stand-alone Axor Urquiola bath tub mixer is combined at the wash-basin with Hansgrohe Metris fixtures, with the high spout of the mixer providing ample space. The designers relied on Chinese craftsmanship to develop the vast array of woodwork, such as the highly ornamental ceiling and wall coverings. Wood carvings, ceramics, rich textiles, and orange-red colour accents represent the link to time-honoured tradition. The mosaics in the bathrooms and the floral carpets also reflect emphasis on details.

Nectre’s Big Baker’s Oven can heat areas up to 180m2 making it an ideal heating and cooking appliance for large open plan homes and venues such as community halls, holiday camps, sporting clubs, winery cellar-doors, etc. The Big Baker’s Oven does everything Nectre’s original Baker’s Oven can do but on a bigger scale: roast a leg of lamb or bake a loaf of bread while providing cosy radiant warmth. It has a bigger cooktop with two removable cooking rings as well as a large area for casserole dishes. There’s a vent to help control oven temperature and a brass oven thermometer to help you monitor your cooking. It also has top and bottom combustion air to keep the glass clean and bottom air to boost the fire and for easy lighting. The classic styling is reminiscent of a bygone area; and the heating source is wood. It is designed and built in Australia, by Pecan Engineering in Adelaide, and exported to many countries.
Back by popular demand, the Klondike and Pittsburgh wood fire heaters from Masport are available from specialist heating stores across the country. The classic North American styling and rugged black cast iron finish make these heaters a nostalgic centre piece for both indoors and outdoors. Heating up to 100m2 and 150m2 respectively, the Klondike and Pittsburgh offer radiant circulation and are ideal for spaces with high ceilings and for outdoors entertaining areas. Three open-door, deluxe wood-burning fireplaces Chazelles Fireplaces have released three fireplace surround designs. Their dual-opening door-system features a lateral and a vertical door opening. You can enjoy the warmth and glow of an open fire by sliding the glass door up out of view; or slide the glass door down for the unit to revert to the efficiency and safety of a slow combustion wood fire. All three models’ uninterrupted lines are enhanced by the use of a clever removable handle. The C800R VE fireplace is designed for installation into an existing fireplace and is suitable for heating large areas. This model can be fitted with an optional Hot Air Ducting System to allow warmth from the fire to be dispersed throughout the house. The D1200 fireplace’s and the D1350 fireplace’s cleverly-designed ash-extractor makes for ease-of-cleaning. Both models have four connectors that enable the fireplace to be connected to the optional Hot Air Ducting System so you can transfer warm air into multiple rooms. And both come with a range of surround designs so you can better integrate your fireplace into the design of your home’s interior. The D1350 fireplace is the epitome of luxury, elegance, and power.
