The wallpaper is repositionable allowing some flexibility when applying if there are air pockets or fibres. Another feature of the wallpaper is that it is easily removable. Bathroom makeover for mid-century dwellings A mid-century home on the edge of a desert used a balanced mix of serene blues, tactile glass and pristine whites to create a cooling, relaxing retreat from hot desert winds – a colour palette that can work equally well in coastal bathrooms. Colour inspiration came from the blue skies of the surrounding desert with key fixtures such as glass basins and a contemporary-styled cast iron bath from Kohler. The light grey high gloss floor tiles add a further dimension to the otherwise two-toned space – while the white fixtures pop in contrast to the serene blue wall hues.

The texture of Kohler’s Nature’s Chemistry spun glass basins complements the sleek, hard surfaces – there are a number in the range, including the Kallos multi-faceted under bench design and the beautifully crafted cast glass Antilia Wading Pool model. The Reve cast iron bath is a refreshing contemporary take on the traditional freestanding bath – its modernist design incorporates geometric faceted lines; a wider back ledge for storage of bathing products; and an elevated plinth to increase the architectural statement of the piece. Wallmounted tapware contributes to the clean, uncluttered aesthetic. Here the owners used a combination of the Bluetooth enabled Moxie and the overhead RainCan shower head. Moxie streams music, talk and podcasts directly into the shower stall through an integrated speaker in the showerhead. The RainCan showerhead features Katalyst Spray Technology whereby a drenching rainshower experience is delivered [while maintaining a 3 star WELS rating]. The shower introduces two litres of air into the water stream every minute to create large, drenching water droplets that both massage and rejuvenate. German-made cordless drill/ drivers Following the introduction of the FEIN cordless drywall screw gun and cordless metal screw gun, in 2013 the company has developed a range of universal Li-Ion cordless drill/drivers. The hero product is the FEIN ASCM, a powerful cordless drill/driver with FEIN’s brushless PowerDrive motor and 4-speed gearbox. There are five models in the range. The 4-speed cordless drill/driver is available as the FEIN ASCM QX. The QX denotes a removable drill chuck and separate bit holder which reduces the tool weight by 200g. Initially Nicholas Murray Architects suggested a more modern kitchen design; but the client wanted to keep true to the rest of the house, which is very vibrant and ornate; very old-fashioned. But they soon changed their minds and went with a sleek, minimalist renovation, which has provided an interesting contrast between the two styles. To create the fireplace, Corian® in near-white was chosen for its ease of moulding, which helped increase design possibilities when installing the firebox into the island bench. The EcoSmart Fire was chosen because they obviously couldn’t have a fireplace that needed fluing under the kitchen island. Modern to a tee, the kitchen is filled with stainless steel elements including kickboards and benchtops, which complement the stainless steel firebox. Waterproofing sheet roof-membrane that fixes leaking roofs quickly and efficiently The Cumberland Lorne Resort [Victoria] was facing major disruptions and a loss of bookings due to a seriously degraded roofing membrane causing leaks into a number of apartments and penthouses. The old torched-on membrane on the concrete roof had been repaired numerous times with little lasting success. Remedial specialists had advised the resort to remove the existing membrane, clean the concrete roof and then apply a liquid membrane to resolve the ongoing issue. But this was estimated to take 6-8 weeks. Moreover, it could be done only in the summer months due to the wet weather during the rest of the year. This would cause major distribution to the hotel and its guests and a potential loss of bookings. As an alternative, Ardex Australia suggested that their new-generation ARDEX TPO sheet roofing membrane would significantly reduce the time and cost of the project along with the environment-impact. The roof-refurbishment ended up taking just two weeks with a team of two to three contractors as compared to the eight weeks the initially specified liquid membrane application would have taken. That the application process was both fast and could continue irrespective of weather conditions was a major influence in the decision making.
A rooftile that captures solar energy Having considered all the environment- and economic-benefits of installing a photovoltaic solar system, the next challenge for a Sydney home-renovating couple was finding the right system that would work with the original Edwardian architecture of their house. To complicate the process, the existing slate roof was in need of major repairs and would require replacing at significant cost. The thought of boltingon a series of PV solar panels to a new slate roof was unpalatable; and would undoubtedly compromise the home’s architectural integrity. Their dilemma was resolved in two stages. First, the entire roof was replaced with a new Monier Cambridge roof tile that features a “hewn stone” finish, replicating the look, colour and texture of slate. To accentuate the ridge line, Monier terracotta saddles and gable finial scrolls were installed providing an added visual link to the home’s Edwardian façade. Stage two of this roof-renovation was actioned using Monier’s modular SOLARtile, which was retrofitted seamlessly into the new Cambridge roof.
The TPO membrane comes in 30m sheets x 2m wide and weighs just 1.53kg/m2. This provides easier handling and a variety of installation options for low slope roofing applications in both refurbishment and new construction projects. The membrane offers single ply protection with fast, hot-air welded seams which deliver a rapid, safe (no naked flames) installation process.

Environmentally, the TPO waterproofing membrane has some significant advantages: it is chlorine-free, non-halogenated and plasticizer-free formulation; and in combination with the hotair welded seaming method, produces no environment-harmful emissions. The white colour of ARDEX TPO creates a heatreflective index of over 70%, a high proportion of which is retained for the lifetime of the membrane due to its colour-fast retention properties.

ARDEX WPM 615 TPO is a high performance waterproofing membrane of thermoplastic polyolefin combining polypropylene and ethylene propylene rubber. The scrim-reinforced membrane combines the durability of rubber with the heat-welding properties of a thermoplastic in a flexible sheet. It is hot-air welded to deliver a fully secure, consistent seam quality. In addition, all penetrations and corners of the roof area were made easier to complete because of the ARDEX TPO pre-formed corners and boots.
Monier SOLARtiles are designed specifically to integrate with the entire range of flat profiled Monier roof tiles and, as a result of their modular design, can be installed in any configuration, including smaller roof sections to optimise energy production. Unlike conventional bolt-on solar panels, Monier was able to install a 2kW system entirely onto one roof elevation, despite the shape and relatively small size of the hipped roof area. This would not have been possible on this house if conventional solar panels were used, without extending them beyond the ridgeline which would have been unsightly and impractical. Their power bills following the installation have been reduced by 30-50%.

Thermal façade comprising a lightweight external insulation and finishing system Kingspan Insulation and Dulux® AcraTex® have jointly developed the Exsulite®-Kooltherm® Thermal Façade System – a fully integrated, lightweight External Insulation and Finishing System (EIFS). Although commonplace in Europe for over 50 years, these lightweight cladding systems are relatively new to Australia where appropriate system design, weatherproofing and installation have, in many cases, not been fully understood. According to the National Construction Code (NCC), these types of walling systems are considered alternative solutions, and therefore require appropriate design and installation controls to comply. Dutch designed and handmade suspension lamp The Salago Lamp was designed by Dutchman Danny Fang, born out of his fascination for the timeless value of mastering a craft; in contrast with the quick pace of mass-production. By combining the techniques of paper maché and paper pulping he has created a lamp with a strong structure but light body. While at first sight its form reminds one of industrial factory-lighting, at a closer look the almost palpable structure of its paper shade is revealed in its timeless value of handcrafted artistry. Translucent glass products for home-renovating projects One of the latest home design trends Viridian has noticed is the growing demand for open plan, light-filled homes that also offer privacy and style. Viridian has witnessed this trend result in rising demand for translucent glass as it offers an economical method of providing both permanent privacy and natural light. Viridian has accordingly tailored its range to offer an expanded collection of translucent glass products that facilitate a variety of design requirements. Permeable paving for harvesting storm water Permeable Paving is an effective storm water management tool which uses purpose designed paving units and specially graded base materials to allow excess storm water to filtrate through the pavement surface to the sub base beneath where it can be harvested, recycled or returned to the water table. Permeable paving has been used in many commercial projects throughout Australia including Brisbane’s Botanic Gardens and Sydney’s Olympic Park Precinct. While having been successfully used in these projects, there has been a notable trend in the use of Permeable Paving in residential and multi-residential projects where forward thinking councils reward sustainable design by classifying permeable paving as a part of a property’s soft landscaping. Currently, in Melbourne, five hundred billion litres of water falls on the city each year and only 1% is captured. Permeable Paving can capture up to 95% of stormwater runoff which creates an opportunity to enhance water recycling efforts while also mitigating the effects of stormwater flooding. Quick and effective flued gas heating The latest Paloma flued gas heaters from Rheem are sleek and stylish, unobtrusive, and designed for efficiency, performance and ease of use. These thermostatically controlled, 4.8 star gas-flued heaters are created for energyefficiency and performance, and to provide heat rapidly. They’re also easy to start, with one touch electronic ignition. Safety is also a key feature of the heaters. Being flued, or ‘room sealed’, the coaxial flue system draws in fresh air and pushes all flue exhaust outside the home, ensuring no indoor emissions. There’s also a child lock mode, which prevents children from interfering with the heater controls. In the event of a gas or power failure, or if the heater overheats, there’s an automatic shut off. Plus the heater gives a warning when the filter needs cleaning. You can set the heater to automatically turn on or off with dual timers, at two separate periods of the day. You can set the heater to turn on before you get up in the morning; and before you get home at night. The heater automatically operates up to one hour prior to the programmed starting time, so the room is at the required temperature when the programmed on-time is reached. You’re also able to override the present program to operate the heater manually. They’re quiet to run and are designed with a simple-to-use control pad. In addition, they feature a humidifier tray, which can be filled with water to raise the humidity level in the room, making it feel warmer and more comfortable. The 15MJ model is suited to small to medium sized homes, while the 25MJ model is designed for mid to larger-sized residences. Incorporating a fireplace into modern kitchen design This sophisticated and stylish kitchen, with its emphasis on quality fittings and appliances, is perfect for entertaining; and in bringing together architectural detail and streamlined design. Lee Hardcastle from Enigma Interiors, Queensland, created a multipurpose space for his client, located on Sovereign Island off Paradise Point in Queensland. Multiple wine fridges sit behind a stunning marble block with an EcoSmart fire [from The Fire Company] set into a front niche, creating a remarkable feature. The kitchen design did not originally include a fireplace. The space now occupied by an EcoSmart XL900 burner was going to be filled with a television. But Lee wanted to create a more relaxing and inviting space, somewhere free of distractions such as a television. The statement Grigio Carnico marble block that surrounds the EcoSmart Fire was introduced late in the design process. The owners had requested an all-white kitchen; but determined to incorporate a touch of natural texture and colour, Lee suggested the use of this material to enhance the appearance.
Gloss-white elegant fan One of Vornado’s most powerful Air Circulators is now available in Gloss White. Model 660 moves air up to 30.5m and cools down the whole room evenly. The model’s exterior features an attractive combination of white gloss and matte parts for a sleek and modern finish. Made-in-Australia free-standing gas log heaters operating on natural gas or LPG Freestanding gas log heaters are particularly suited to large family rooms, open plan dining and kitchen areas and well-ventilated lounge rooms. Cannon’s made-in-Australia Freestanding Gas Log Heaters have standard flue arrangements. This allows installation against a combustible wall in accordance with the recommended clearances. No fixing of the heater to the floor is required; the base can simply sit atop all floor surfaces. However a standard flue heater is not suited for installation in scenarios such as: external perimeter walls of high-pitched roof buildings; high rated energy efficient homes or two-storey extensions to existing homes. There are two Cannon Freestanding Gas Log Heaters offered in a choice of Natural gas or LPG: the Canterbury Classic Freestanding Gas Heater (CANTFS-SDEEB); and the Fitzroy Profile Freestanding Kit (FITZFSKITX-B) which converts the Fitzroy Profile Inbuilt heater (FITZIB-SDENB) into a freestanding heater. The Canterbury Classic Freestanding Gas Heater (CANTFS-SDEEB) is further distinguished by its enhanced flame effect. Like all Cannon heaters, the Canterbury Classic Freestanding Gas Heater offers the option of a remote thermostat control with an easy-to-read LCD display. The device provides the convenience of 28 programmable periods along with manual and automatic modes and can be connected to an automated system such as C-bus. Safety features include a child lock on the thermostat and the option of a mesh guard kit for added protection. The Fitzroy Profile freestanding kit, which includes a pedestal, outer casing, and flue kit, converts the Fitzroy Profile Inbuilt heater (FITZIB-SDENB) into a freestanding heater. The maximum flue length is 4.5m while the minimum distance from the rear of the heater to the wall is 40mm. The total minimum depth from the front of the heater to the wall is 490mm. Safety tips from Rover to prevent injuries In 2013 there were 173 injuries from lawn mowing incidents that led to hospitalisation across Victoria. Believing education is the key to reducing such incidents, Rover has prepared some safety tips that you should consider next time you do the mowing: Protect The Family. Before you even start the mower make sure all family members and pets are removed from the mowing area. Rake It Up. Rake up areas prone to debris. Sticks and rocks can flick up from underneath your mower and cause serious harm. Protect Your Eyes. 71% of all mower related injuries recorded were of the upper extremity, including the face, neck and eyes. Make sure you’re wearing protective eyewear while mowing your lawn just in case a stray stick or rock flies up from under your mower. No Thongs or Sandals: Make sure you are wearing enclosed footwear for all backyard tasks. Wear comfortable shoes that have adequate traction to prevent slipping. Turn It Off. Before you even think about putting your hands near your mower blades, always turn the engine off. It sounds simple, but so many people get it wrong. Late-model Rover lawn mowers come with an automatic engine break; so when you stop so does your mower. Take Your Time. 76% of the above hospital admissions were males, with the highest rate between 40-45 years of age. Guys like to get the job done quickly; but safety should be the top priority when you’ve got a high-powered mower at your fingertips. Take your time with the job to minimise risk in the backyard. Get To Know Your Mower. Knowing how to shut off your mower immediately could be the difference between finishing the job safely and a trip to the hospital. Never leave your mower engine running unattended. Think First before Reversing. Especially relevant when using a ride-on, make sure you always look behind before reversing. Make Sure It’s Dry. Let that early morning dew dry out before you start. Mowing on a wet track not only promotes grass sticking to your mower blades; it vastly increases your chances of slipping and injuring yourself. Cool Down. When you’re refuelling, make sure your mower has been turned off and wait at least a few minutes. This will give yourself and the engine some time to cool before you continue the job. Use Caution On The Slopes. Contrary to popular expectations, 93% of mower-related injuries were from walk behind mowers, not ride-ons. To ensure safety in the backyard, never mow up and down a slope with a push mower, always mow across the slope. A fireplace that can be placed anywhere, within any room This home’s neutral colour scheme is broken up by bright, eclectic art. Using glazed bricks for decorative projects Glazed bricks are becoming an integral element in home-renovations, including internal and external feature walls, water features and alfresco open fire hearths and pits. Makeover with PVC Panels Cobbs Bakery in the historic fishing town of Port Fairy in Victoria is celebrating it’s 50th birthday in 2014 and this called for a complete update of the century old premises including a facelift to the internal walls and ceiling of the large bakery behind the shop. Covering the tired surfaces with more coats of paint wasn’t going to provide the best outcome . So the business decided to clad these work areas with high gloss white Panelscape PVC panels and achieved an inspiring result. The panels require a minimum of maintenance and the fact that no painting is ever required is a huge benefit for the bakery. Also of great importance to the bakery is the fact PVC will not ignite, even from another flame, until it reaches about 378°C, and will not self ignite until about 454°C. These ignition temperatures are significantly higher than common framing timber, which ignites from flame at 260°C and self ignites at 410°C. The waterproof Panelscape PVC wall and ceiling panels are 5mm thick, 25 cm wide and come in lengths of 1.8M and 2.4M. The tongue and grooved panels simply slot into each other to provide a tight, almost invisible flush join thus making a continuous ceiling without the need for joining strips. Installation is so easy. To cut the panels to size, use a fine tooth saw. Holes for light fittings, ceiling fans or heating can be made with a utility knife or hole saw. Apply silicone adhesive to the back of each panel and fit them one at a time until the ceiling is fully covered. The panels are strong but very light in weight, not
like heavy plasterboard, and are quite easily lifted into position without effort. To keep the ceiling panels in place whist the glue is setting you should screw or staple at random intervals into the back lug of each panel during installation. The fixings will be completely covered up by the next panel. Panelscape PVC wall and ceiling panels are distributed by Handi Home Supplies, Melbourne. Shower heads offering different spray patterns at touch of button The Hansgrohe Select technology allows a choice of sprays at the touch of a button. Refurbishing an old driveway while using the old material as a base StoneSet is a product engineered to renovate existing driveways. A recent home-renovation on the NSW Central Coast included a driveway-refurbishment, extending the usable area and improving the kerbappeal. The existing 30 year old tiled-surface was still strong but looked dated. Rather than ripping it up to start again, it was utilised as the base for the new StoneSet surface employing resin-bound porouspaving technology. This represented an excellent cost saving for the home owner; as well as saving on unnecessary landfill. The StoneSet install was carried out over two days using their 6mm Charcoal blend, designed to last over 20 years. By using StoneSet the home-renovators were able to retain the existing concrete driveway, and reshape by adding new concrete pieces to change the driveway to suit the renovations of the dwelling.

The StoneSet topping was considered the most cost effective way of renovating the driveway, saving $15,000-$20,000 when compared with the cost of removing the existing concrete and replace it with new material. As well as being used to overlay concrete, blocks and asphalt surfaces, StoneSet surfaces are porous and can contribute to your soft landscaping ratio whilst providing a hardwearing surface suitable for driveway traffic. A porous base can be an existing, compacted and well-used road base. Four new FEIN MultiMaster oscillating tools for sawing and sanding FEIN has developed their next generation MultiMaster 350 Q that performs sawing tasks around 35% faster than the previous model; and with vibration reduced by up to 70%, achieving vibration class-zero in virtually all applications. Even when continuously sawing, only vibration class-one is reached. To make jobs as pleasant as possible the anti-vibration system also roughly halves the sound pressure; and it weighs in at just 1.4kg. This new FEIN MultiMaster 350 Q is available in three sets. The MultiMaster QuickStart includes accessories for a wide range of applications: sanding accessories; various saw blades; and a rigid stopper knife. Design tips for small bathrooms Bathtubs: Having a bathtub is by no means a necessity, especially when you have a small bathroom; but the Rexa Unico Egg bathtub takes up limited space. Designed for maximized relaxation it offers different incline grades on both sides to provide comfort both seated and lying down. Its integrated shelf compensates for the loss of floor space and may be used for towels and bath accessories. Floating vanities: Floating vanities, such as the Signature Buddy vanity, combine a modern feel, simple design and assist a small space to appear less cluttered. The two small basins in close proximity is a smart use of space as it allows for more than one person to use the vanity at a time. Downsize the toilet: Modern toilets use less water and many models have a compact designs. The Kerasan K09 range, which includes washbasin, toilet suite and bidet, was specifically created with small bathrooms in mind. Simple in design and classic in appearance this collection is manufactured from vitreous-china and focuses on shallow depths, rounded profiles and thin edges. A water-based, quick-dry Bathtub with a low-noise whirlpool for relaxation enamel paint Haymes Paints has developed a water-based trim product that delivers a true enamel finish called Elite Trim Rapid. Utilising clever state-of-the-art technology Elite Trim Rapid is able to maintain performance characteristics just as traditional turps-based enamels would, whilst being water-based, quick drying and having a low VOC, providing a high gloss finish with no compromise on discolouration and odours. Gone are the days of two coats of water-based trim high-gloss products required to achieve an acceptable high gloss finish. Elite Trim Rapid by Haymes can be applied just once over a suitably applied undercoat and achieve a flawless high gloss finish, all within a day’s work. Without emitting fumes or odours, it is ideal for renovation-projects in hospitals, schools, offices and non-offensive hard-wearing trimpaint locations. Containing special resin technology, Elite Trim Rapid yields an impressive coating strength as well as improved flow and levelling properties for a perfect finish. Sizes range from 4 litres to 10 litres; available in white bases; and priced at $73.95 for a 4-litre tin.
Hydroline is a bathtub device where the standard whirlpool nozzles have been replaced by minimalist slits that ensure the continuity of the bathtub material. These ultra-thin slits offer a Chromo-experience system by being backlit in eight different colour options. Available in all Duralight bathtubs, Hydroline can be fitted in Teuco’s acrylic bathtubs Nauha, Wilmotte and Seaside, as the classic jets have been substituted by flush-fit nozzles. Hydroline can be combined with Hydrosilence®, which offers the pleasures of a whirlpool, while eliminating the noise and vibrations typically generated by some systems. Using traditional encaustic tiles to create a centuries-old look for floors Traditionally inlaid tiles or encaustic tiles were made for use in cathedrals and churches, and today those same stone tiles, after centuries of use, are still presenting their definitive designs with grandeur.
