Dust-free cutting When cutting building and renovating materials such as floor tiles, concrete, screed and plasterboard panels, many Tradies typically use an angle grinder. Unfortunately this process generates a high level of dust as cutting mineral materials creates significant fine dust pollution. This also poses considerable health risks for anyone in the workarea. A beautiful chevron designed rug can be an attractive addition to any room and there are lots of options in sizes and colours: a complementary colour for your curtains and walls; or a completely contrasting colour to make a statement. But if you want a look that’s traditional, yet modern at the same time, consider chevron encaustic tiles. Encaustic tiles are famously colourful and rich with design so it makes sense that they also get the chevron treatment. The simple timeless chevron shape first made a modern-day appearance in the 1920s and 30s with the birth of the Art Deco movement; but it really came-ofage in the swinging 1960s in women’s fashion; before being translated to interior design. In recent years renewal was promoted, again, in women’s fashion; and then the chevron slowly made its way back into home-décor. Light-coloured floor boards Cool and light, with graphic elements and colourful accents, the Scandinavian-look is an interior design classic that has been around for some time; and isn’t likely to disappear soon. Budget bathroom-renovation using Raymor products The lavishly patterned floor of this bathroom was the starting point of the renovation, creating a template for the other elements of this relaxing home-spa. The multi-patterned tiles featuring a mix of geometrics in a palette of warm greys, putty and white influenced the choices of fixtures and fittings. German-designed toilet seat for bidet operation Nothing is as thorough, natural and refreshing as cleansing with water; especially after using the toilet. “Shower-toilets” are becoming more popular. In Asia, this facility is already standard in millions of bathrooms; and in the western world an increasing number of people are embracing this level of toilet-cleanliness. However, a discreet and attractive design plays a key role in acceptance. In 2010, German bathroom manufacturer Duravit collaborated with designer Philippe Starck on their SensoWash shower-toilet seat. Duravit has recently enhanced the aesthetics by introducing the SensoWash e with concealed cable and water connections [$3387]. This new design harmonises better with modern bathroom architecture. The technical components have been miniaturised so that the entire technology can fit between the ceramic body of the toilet and the toilet-seat.
This latest version [with concealed connections] can be combined with the Starck 2 [$1378, $2447], Starck 3 [$1045, $1779] and Darling New [$1111] toilet- ranges. Thanks to the plug-in connectors for water and electricity, installation is quite easy. Furthermore, the system is compatible with the wall-mounted elements of many other well-known brands. SensoWash’s bidet function becomes apparent only after opening the toilet lid to look inside. A stainless steel spray arm offers three different types of shower: the Rearwash leaves you feeling clean and fresh. The Comfortwash offers a more attentive wash that cleanses with both the forward and backward movement of the spray arm; or also with a pulsating water jet. While the water jet of the Ladywash is specially tailored to feminine needs, offering gentle cleansing. Water temperature, water volume and nozzle position can each be adjusted and, once saved, are easy to select again. The spray arm and nozzles are cleaned automatically before and after each use. As a preventative measure, both the stainless-steel spray arm and the toilet seat have an antimicrobial coating. The remote control can be used to open the toilet lid: lift lid; lift seat and lid; close lid. The electrically-operated unit opens
and closes automatically at the push of a button. The seat itself is heated; and the temperature can be controlled. After the user sits down the desired wash function is selected by remote control. The arrow keys are used to change the position of the spray arm. Water pressure, seat and water temperature can be individually adjusted using the +/- keys. Personal preferences can be stored in two profiles, which are then simply selected the next time. A special LED night-light provides orientation and safety when it’s dark. In addition, SensoWash e has a child-safety feature to prevent unwanted usage. A sensor in the seat allows the function to be used only when it recognises the weight of a “real” user. Makeover of a bathroom with timber-look tiles A new collection of bathroomware triggered the inspiration for an organic, timeless bathroom that maximises space while bringing a little of the outdoors in. Portable effluent pumps for septic tank applications Australian Pump has introduced a new cost-effective single-phase submersible pump designed for septic tank applications. Called the UT series, the pump is manufactured by Tsurumi Pump [Japan]. Designed specifically for effluent and sewage applications, the pump is fitted with a clever vortex-style impeller that passes compressible solids up to 35mm in diameter. Maximum flow available is 440 lpm; while maximum lift or vertical head is 12.5 metres. The pumps are powered by single phase, capacitor start, electric motors in the range of 0.4kW to 0.75kW. All pumps are supplied with a heavy duty 10m submersible cable. The pump’s motor is a dry type squirrel cage induction-style housed in a watertight casing. It conforms to class E insulation; and the UT pumps can be used in ambient temperatures of up to 40 degrees C. The motor features an inbuilt thermal motor protection device that reacts to the heat generated by an over current or dry run conditions. This not only cuts off the motor automatically, but also resets by itself. Tsurumi Pump developed the product range in response to requirements in the Japanese market for super-tough pumps for sewage applications. The Tsurumi UT series are available as standard effluent pumps; and also come as automatic stop/start versions that feature a simple float control system that prevents dry running, reduces power consumption and extends operating life. Wall-mounted shower Closer is one of Italian manufacturer Zucchetti’s recent creations, now available from Candana Designs. This showerhead reinvents the movements we associate with showering. Designer Diego Grandi’s starting point was to bring the normally static bathroom space to life, via an object with strong expressive potential and plenty of scope for dynamism. In terms of form, Closer resembles a lamp with three moveable joints; in terms of function it is a showerhead designed to be adjusted and extended, simply and intuitively. The adjustable arm allows for many different spatial configurations, which in turn translates into an equally wide range of methods for you to control and direct the jet of water. A cylindrical counterweight ensures the showerhead is stable in any position or height. Signs that your hot water system may need maintenance Most of us tend to ignore our hot water service until it’s too late. Rheem has some key tips to help you identify whether your hot water system is on the way out – or might need some attention. If you have the system checked on a regular basis, you can extend its serviceable- life; improve efficiency; ensure your water heater is operating and performing as designed; and highlight any repairs or preventative-maintenance that should be done. Signs your hot water system might need attention: •
Is the water coming from the tap rusty or brown in colour?
•
Is the water muddy or does it have sediment in it?
•
Is the hot water system making strange sounds? Some noise from the water heating up is normal, but if you notice cracking or popping noises these should be checked.
•
Has the pilot light gone out? Does this happen often?
•
Does the hot water have a strange smell or metallic taste?
•
Are you getting less hot water?
•
Is water leaking out of the system?
•
Do you often experience fluctuations in temperature?
•
Does the water pressure or flow rate vary?
•
Are you running out of hot water?
Rheem Service undertakes regular checks of domestic Rheem hot water systems. It offers a range of services including sixmonthly minor maintenance, an annual service and a major five year service. The major service includes replacing the system’s sacrificial anode, temperature and pressure relief valves; checking correct operation of the gas, electric or solar control; and checking solar heat transfer fluid [for solar hot water systems]. Rheem recommends having domestic hot water systems checked around every three years for gas and electric systems, bi-annually for solar systems, or whenever you feel something has changed or you have noticed any warning signs.

Excessive water pressure [this adds stress on the cylinder, thus reducing the life of the system].
