Bathroom ventilation, lighting & heating guide Selecting a ventilation unit for your bathroom is not about onesize-fits-all. Having adequate exhaust capacity is important to prevent the build-up of stale air, condensation and mildew; while the heating and lighting requirements differ from one bathroom to the next. Complementing a bathroom’s look and working to a budget are other key considerations. IXL Appliances has developed the following guidelines to assist you in choosing the best-fit ventilation from their range of products. Check your bathroom dimensions. The higher the bathroom ceiling, the greater the heat producing capability needed from a Tastic® to provide adequate warmth. To heat and ventilate a larger bathroom, a four-lamp model and one that has powerful exhaust is recommended. Free-standing gas log heaters operating on natural gas or LPG Freestanding gas log heaters are particularly suited to large family rooms, open plan dining and kitchen areas and wellventilated lounge rooms. Cannon’s madein-Australia Freestanding Gas Log Heaters have standard flue arrangements. This allows installation against a combustible wall in accordance with the recommended clearances. No fixing of the heater to the floor is required; the base can simply sit atop all floor surfaces. However a standard flue heater is not suited for installation in scenarios such as: external perimeter walls of high-pitched roof buildings; high rated energy efficient homes or two-storey extensions to existing homes. There are two Cannon Freestanding Gas Log Heaters offered in a choice of

Natural gas or LPG: the Canterbury Classic Freestanding Gas Heater (CANTFS-SDEEB); and the Fitzroy Profile Freestanding Kit (FITZFSKITX-B) which converts the Fitzroy Profile Inbuilt heater (FITZIB-SDENB) into a freestanding heater. Both models offer a stately, pared back, black finish and the alluring realism of eucalypt-look logs. Standard features common to both models include: electronic ignition and controls; three heat and fan speed settings; and four continuously monitored safety systems. The Canterbury Classic Freestanding Gas Heater (CANTFS-SDEEB) is further distinguished by its enhanced flame effect. Like all Cannon heaters, the Canterbury Classic Freestanding Gas Heater offers the

option of a remote thermostat control with an easy-to-read LCD display. The device provides the convenience of 28 programmable periods along with manual and automatic modes and can be connected to an automated system such as C-bus. Safety features include a child lock on the thermostat and the option of a mesh guard kit for added protection. The Fitzroy Profile freestanding kit, which includes a pedestal, outer casing, and flue kit, converts the Fitzroy Profile Inbuilt heater (FITZIB-SDENB) into a freestanding heater. The maximum flue length is 4.5m while the minimum distance from the rear of the heater to the wall is 40mm. Design tips for small bathrooms Bathtubs: Having a bathtub is by no means a necessity, especially when you have a small bathroom; but the Rexa Unico Egg bathtub takes up limited space. Windows and doors that can be used in bushfire rated areas For this project Paarhammer supplied and installed windows, lift-slide doors, stacker sliders and corner stacker sliders; as well as clerestory windows, fixed glass units and doors. All are double glazed, low E and Pyro40 (which includes Low-E as part of bushfire glass) with U-values of 1.7 and 1.8. High performance glazing was used to reduce heat loss and improve thermal comfort. One of the most pleasing aspects of this project was the use of large glazed areas and sliding doors while the building is situated in the second highest bushfire prone area. The owners feared that they would need to change their design due to the BAL-ratings but with Paarhammer windows and doors this was not necessary, as all products and glazing were in accordance with the Australian Standards AS 3959-2009 and AS1530.8.1 for Building in Bushfire Areas. This house is sensitive to its surroundings and allows for indoors-outdoors living with large sliding doors and stacker sliders including corner stackers, which open up to several outdoors areas. The threshold recessed into the floor means that there are no steps across; and with a set of stacker doors open, the indoors and outdoors blend together as one area. The generous lift slide and corner stacker sliding doors allow an uninhibited view as corner supports are not required. Some of the stacker sliding doors open the indoors to the outside entertainment area as far as 4m in each direction from the corner, providing an expansive view. The timber used was FSC-certified Manilkara Bidentata or Pacific Jarrah; the windows and doors have been oiled to show their reddish colour; however if allowed to age the timber will turn to a maintenance-free natural silver grey.

Petrol-powered 3000 psi pressure cleaner Aussie Pumps has developed a new 3,000 psi engine drive pressure cleaner, called the Aussie 30 Scud, engineered for farmers, civil contractors and Tradies [with a list price of under $2,000]. The company claims that this new machine packs more punch yet uses less horsepower than other 3,000 psi machines. The new Scud 30 is built tough for Australian users in a compact well designed “Scud” frame trolley with four 10” pneumatic tyres and steel wheels. Brick colours inspired by nature Taking cues from the warm, inviting tones inspired by our great deserts and the rich red tones of forest tree trunks, PGH Bricks has released their dramatic Desert and Woodland collections [available only in NSW]. The ranges include seven new colours that fit easily into the palette of Rich Creams, Golden Tans, Rustic Browns, Silver Greys and Dramatic Reds. The Desert collection, inspired by the natural variations of desert sands, includes rich and earthy tones in subtle mottled tans, cream, grey and rustic brown, giving home-renovators a sense of connecting with nature. Stronger and lighter plasterboard CSR Gyprock® has R&D’d new technology that enables an advanced performance-to-weight ratio for plasterboard. Gyprock Supaceil™ is manufactured using Optimised Core™ technology that produces a board that is both stronger and lighter, with significantly improved score-and-snap qualities for cleaner cuts and an improved face appearance. For plasterboard high levels of strength and flex are desired for performance; for manoeuvrability and handling plasterboard needs to be able to bend without breaking and not be brittle; and it needs to be easy to score and snap, with clean cuts and square edges.

Rust-resistant ceiling fans The marine-grade stainless steel Quick Fit ceiling fan from HPM [$340] is rustresistant and therefore suitable for both indoors and outdoors areas; and ideal for homes in coastal areas. Offering complete resistance to damage from harsh climatic conditions including humidity and salinity, this new fan has a full marine-grade stainless steel construction: all the components, including the body, blades, screws and brackets, are corrosion-resistant. Integrated clipper lights are also available to optimise use of the ceiling space. Designed and engineered in Australia, the fans offer maximum performance for minimum energy consumption. At the flick of a switch you can change the direction of airflow. In summer-mode the blades rotate clockwise to push cool air down; while in winter-mode the blades rotate counterclockwise at low speed to push warm air to the edge of a room and down walls to the floor in a recirculating motion.

Smoke alarms with 10year batteries

Having considered all the environmental and economic benefits of installing a photovoltaic solar system, the next challenge for a Sydney home-renovating couple was finding the right system that would work with the original Edwardian architecture of their house. To complicate the process, the existing slate roof was in need of major repairs and would require replacing at significant cost.

In Australia it is mandatory to have a working smoke alarm installed in all homes, including houses, apartments, flats, and anywhere else people may sleep. All smoke alarms sold by Bunnings are certified to Australian Safety Standards.

Their dilemma was resolved in two stages. First, the entire roof was replaced with a new Monier Cambridge roof tile that features a “hewn stone” finish, replicating the look, colour and texture of slate. To accentuate the ridge line, Monier terracotta saddles and gable finial scrolls were installed providing an added visual link to the home’s Edwardian façade. Stage two of this roof-renovation was actioned using Monier’s modular SOLARtile, which was retrofitted seamlessly into the new Cambridge roof. Monier SOLARtiles are designed specifically to integrate with the entire range of flat profiled Monier roof tiles and, as a result of their modular design, can be installed in any configuration, including smaller roof sections to optimise energy production. Unlike conventional bolt-on solar panels, Monier was able to install a 2kW system entirely onto one roof elevation, despite the shape and relatively small size of the hipped roof area. This would not have been possible on this house if conventional solar panels were used, without extending them beyond the ridgeline which would have been unsightly and impractical. Tips for maintaining a garden from Victa Watering: Water slowly for longer. This way you’re watering deeply and encouraging plants to develop deeper root systems, making them stronger and better able to survive hot, dry times. Target-water your garden. Ensure you give the plants that need it a good drink. Install a sub-soil or sub-mulch drip-line watering system and connect it to a computerised timer set to turn on a couple of times a week in the early morning. Fertilise: A healthy, well-fertilised garden has a better chance of withstanding the heat. Fertilise with a hose-in seaweed tonic or bio-fertiliser. Don’t over apply fertiliser as this can have a detrimental effect on your plants and the soil. And for best results use purpose designed fertilisers on specific plants - citrus, rose, acid-loving, native, etc. Mulch: After fertilising, apply fresh mulch to all garden areas and pots. Mulch provides a permeable barrier that helps to retain moisture in the soil and prevents erosion by water and wind, reducing weed growth and keeping plant roots insulated from hot weather. Pot plants: Grow water-hungry vegetables and salad plants, plus smaller fruit trees such as lemons, in pots so you can keep an eye on their watering requirements. Group them by their water needs, keeping thirstier plants together. Adding new plants to your garden: To give your plants the best chance of success, soak them in a bucket of water while you dig the hole to at least twice as wide as the pot size. Improve the soil with composts or manures; position the plant at the same height as it was in the pot; and gently backfill the hole with soil before watering-in well with seaweed tonic or bio-fertiliser. Finally add mulch. Lawn care tips: Invest in a quality oscillating sprinkler with an adjustable range and pattern. Water in the cool of the morning to charge-up your lawn for the day ahead. If you water in the evening after a hot day the soil will be warm and water will evaporate and be wasted. There’s also the chance you’ll bring on fungal problems. Use a tap-timer when running your sprinkler to avoid over-watering. Consider retrofitting a sub-surface drip-line watering system to your lawn areas. Tonic for your lawn: Regularly apply a hose-on seaweed tonic or bio-fertiliser to help it cope with hot, dry weather. Aerate and dress your lawn: Fix drainage problems or dry, compacted areas by opening up the soil with a lawn fork. Every 15cm or so push a fork into a depth of 5cm to 10cm and gently rock back and forth. Once done, rake coarse washed sand or lawn top dressing mix over the area before watering. If you have larger areas to aerate, hire a spiked lawn roller from your local hire shop. Tune up your mower: Before firing up your power garden equipment after its winter lull give it some TLC. Change oil in 4-stroke equipment. Replace spark plugs and air filters. Check your mower blades are sharp, clean and undamaged and replace them if needs be.

Grout coating for use over existing old grout Many home-renovators have found that an otherwise respectable tiled area has been ruined by discoloured or damaged grout, resulting in a tired appearance. To bring the area back to life would often take a high level of physical effort to remove the old grout then re-grout; or a high level of precision to paint the grout without spoiling the tiles. This has often made repairing grout too difficult for many DIYers. Parex Davco’s new Rejuvenation Grout, an Australian-invented product, being sold through Bunnings nationally and tilestores, puts the process of restoring grout back into the hands of DIYers. Building a fireplace inside Economically priced washers and dryers an apartment Creating a spa-like, luxurious environment within a cancer treatment centre was the task assigned to New York architect Jeffrey Berman. He was asked to design a living room -really a family space - in lieu of a waiting room; and a fireplace with hearth was very much in keeping with this concept. The sophistication of the EcoSmart 1800SS stainless steel firebox [from The Fire Company] fitted this brief perfectly, with the added benefit of becoming the inspiration behind a special design concept. The fireplace was brought into the centre of the room to create a sense of warmth for the patients. The EcoSmart firebox makes the area cosy and works with the natural elements in the room. Also, every patient that finishes their radiation treatment signs a rock and places it in the hearth. It is a way that they have an eternal bond and connection with the Centre. The inclusion of the fire, signed rocks and stacked ceramic stone wall makes the patients feel at home by creating a soothing, welcoming, healing environment. The natural elements of stone and fire, coupled with the rich timber hue of the hardwood floor and warm colour scheme, fulfil the desire for a facility that reduces the stress for patients undergoing life-saving treatment. And the low maintenance, no-mess aspect of the EcoSmart Fire was a major drawcard. Since the system does not require gas, flue, chimney or an electrical connection, the product met the tight city regulations for a fireplace in a commercial building. Separate components that heat, light and vent bathrooms from IXL IXL Appliances have developed three separate light, vent and heat components as single or dual function modules, to support their Tastic® Neo range of bathroom heat/light/ventilation products. This clever new range of modules has been conceived to allow bathroom-renovators to customise their own bathroom configuration. You can select just the components you want [ventilation, lighting or heating]; and the placement of those components to fit your bathroom layout. Neo modules can be selected as stand-alone items; or as additional modules to coordinate with existing Neo single or dual units. Compact basins The growing preference for ensuites and powder rooms has accentuated the demand for bathroom fixtures that are space-saving yet create the perception of a larger area. A popular solution is the low profile wall hung basin; or a version that can be mounted onto a compact wallmounted vanity. Kohler has expanded its basin offerings in response to this trend. For those craving a statement piece with sleek, geometric lines the Reve offers three different sizes, integrated counter space for toiletries and a beautifully faceted profile. The largest 1055mm wide model [$1000] protrudes just 500mm from the wall; while the smaller 800mm model [$800] has a more compact 412mm protrusion; and the mini 650mm option [$570] a mere 400mm.
