CNHS: Ready for the worst Florina Y. Araño “When it rains, it pours.” But the Philippines was taken aback a year ago when twin super typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” devastated the main island of Luzon. On September 26, 2009, floodwaters inundated major parts of Manila in a matter of hours. No one was spared with nature’s wrath as waters gobbled down premises as sturdy as exclusive subdivision houses. This year, the country was once again surprised by the strong winds of “Basyang”, hitting main parts of Luzon in the middle of the night, leaving houses roofless and wrecked

the following day. Because of what seemed to be an “endless nightmare” for the victims, the government encourage the entire nation to be vigilant, especially in times of calamities and disasters. Cavite National High School is one with the government in making the said campaign put into action. Juniors Crowned “Lakan K+12 Program: 85 Years at Mutya ng Wika” THE final pageant for the year’s ‘Lakan at Mutya ng Wika’ was held last August 25, 2010, at the CNHS Library. As for the pageant’s opening, the twenty four candidates showed the crowd and the panel of judges their costume which was succeeded by the introduction of the contestants themselves. Because of an unexpected black out, the organizers decided to leave the talent portion for a while and have the question and answer portion first. Aska Paguinto and Pauline Kyle Bautista won the best in creative costume award. Dressed for the occasion. The best in Filipiniana award was given to Jesse James Tercenio and Dixie Joyce Salgado. The winners for the best in talent were Jameson Austria and Allysha Ace Bigornia. Austria performed a modern dance with some back up dancers from The Young Exhibit while Bigornia danced an interpretative dance, showing her skills in balancing a pot on her head. AS the whole world celebrates the World Teachers’ Day last October 5, 2010, the DepEd surprised the nation with the issue about K+12 program announced by DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro. Kinder + six grade school years + four junior high school years + two senior high school years, this will be the proposed program the K+12 is referring to. Filipino children with the age of five years old shall attend kinder as preparation for his/her admission in Grade School. The grade school system isn’t expected to change that much since the number of years is still the same; the major change will be observed with the high school students. After four years on junior high school, students will proceed with additional two years of senior high school which is intended for students to specialize their learning of employable skills. This October 4, 2010, Cavite National High School will celebrate Teacher’s day to pay tribute to over two hundred hard working teachers of the school. This day was intended to give the teachers a day of break from their daily classes by having the students arrange a program for them. The said program was to be lead by the Supreme Student Government and Values Education Department with cooperation from IV – Limestone. Different production numbers, touching stories, and tons of surprises were to be offered for all the teachers. The 1982 law states that basic education must be 11 years at most. Secondly, critics consider this implementation as premature for the other problems such as shortage of classrooms, teachers, and other facilities still has not been solved. Thirdly, the national budget allots huge money for DepEd. This program absolutely needs additional funds. Lastly, there was a great problem with out of school youths at the moment. If the government is to pursue this project, the percentage of students who can finish up till college might be lessened because of the money it will cost the students with the additional two years. DepEd said this program isn’t final for it will undergo consultations.

PARTICIPANTS from Cavite National High School and Sangley Point National High School posed their way to first place for the Human Diorama competition held last September 17, 2010 at the CNHS Library. There were six events in total: 1872 Cavite Mutiny by III – Acacia, Battle of Dalahican by IV – Agate, The Execution of Thirteen Martyrs by IV – Limestone, The Execution of Gomburza by IV – Alexandrite, and The Battle of La Caridad and The ——— by SPNHS. The third spot was given to IV – Agate for their portrayal of The Battle of Dalahican. The Execution of the Thirteen Martyrs presented by IV – Limestone won as second place and The Battle of La Caridad by Sangley Point National High School won first place. Aside from the trophy, the winners were also given cash prizes. The third place received Php 1 000, the second place received Php 2 000, and the first place received Php 3 000. This was the first Division Human Diorama Competition and the second in Cavite National High School. The competition was a part of the annual celebration of Cavite City day.

Green for Go!

RED is for stop, Yellow is for listen, and Green is for go. Yes, Green is for go, neither pink, nor blue. Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) painted NCR with green. As you walk along the sidewalks of the busy cities of the metro, you will see the big change. The pink and blue colors of the city, popularized by former MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, were long gone and the only trace left were the pink lines painted on every sidewalk, marking the end of sidewalk vendors. The green sight was pleasant to the eyes. One good example is the Commonwealth Avenue wherein lots of overpass were rebuilt and colored green. The view became relaxing to the eyes and the awful feeling of seeing pink, color often referred as gayish, and blue disappeared. The amount of smoke exderted by each passing vehicle was to be lessened by the ‘effects’ MMDA added. On the sidewalks, green plants placed in recycled pots or containers were lined up to beautify and purify the polluted city air. Who would’ve thought that the nation’s most hated agency, MMDA, will become peaceful and productive nowadays? So come on, go green!

“Sex education is not all about making love”, says DepEd DEPARTMENT of Education defended sex education from their number one critic, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) last June 4, 2010. Former Education Secretary Mona Valisno made this statement to defend the department’s plan on teaching sex education on elementary students for the upcoming school year. But the gateway is not always open and requires a password for those who want to enter – A qualifying score. UPCAT is the most exalted college entrance test. Many students are hoping to pass the exam though they know how intricate it is. Aside from the first-rate quality of education that you can earn from the university, it also offers reasonably priced tuition fee that is very ideal in the midst of economic constraints of our country today. Many are dying for it. Many are engaging themselves into intensive review sessions making sure that they can reach the average and the qualifying score of the UPCAT. Some endure the soaring price of exclusive review class just to be acquainted in the coverage of the exam. UPCAT is oblivious in the socio-economic status of every examinee but is very observant to the content of their intellectual abilities that is why one should be equipped for this test of a lifetime. Thinking that every exam that you will be facing is obscure and taking this premise for granted can arise too much anxiety. Anxiety in general is a type of stress that motivates us to succeed. It is normal for every examinee to be anxious and sort of vexed because he doesn’t want his invested efforts to be rebuffed and turn to be fiasco. On the other hand, when the focus of your vim turns to anxiety rather than the task in hand, it becomes detrimental to your efforts. Worse, if the level of your stress rises too high, it can result in insomnia and loss of appetite that can obviously affect your performance in the exam. Don’t cram and invite negative sense. The extent of knowledge you learned won’t be worth the stress. Who can bestow help? No one can help you in the midst of the exam except from the guidance from above and your strategy in answering the exam. Never assume that you know all of the requisite procedures nevertheless, do the necessary actions. Pray for guidance and not for the correct answers. There are times that we are long-winded even though we know the righteous thing to do. It is the time when we ought for guidance from above to be able to surpass the exam. TEACHING THE TABOO The advocacies of two sectors in contrary propel different reasons and motives drawing attention to the benefits of the public, especially to the youths of this generation. Pregnancy at a very young age and interim partnership of teenagers leading to premarital sex are not new to the public eyes. These issues have created piercing buzz and condemn the image of the new generation underscoring dilemmas on morality and imprudence. The new generation of teenagers has crossed the verge of probity and grown freethinking embarking an awful image in the modernized society. Different stories and real-life dramas about early pregnancies and premarital sex unveil staggering actualities wherein the subjects’ ages are ranging from thirteen to fifteen. As noted by documentations, many of them do not have any knowledge about the consequences of early pregnancy and barely know what a contraceptive is. At an age when young people try to explore their sexuality, equipping them with knowledge on the circumstances surrounding sexual intercourse becomes necessary. The Department of Education must adapt to changing times, says Dep Ed Secretary Mona Valisno, citing the alarming statistics of teenage pregnancy. Roughly three months before the opening of the school year, the Department of Education announced that sex education would be included in the curriculum of elementary and high schools. Dep-Ed noted that the integration of sex education in the curriculum will help reduce instances of unwanted pregnancy, prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and control population growth. This pronouncement of Dep-Ed immediately spurred criticism from different sectors, particularly from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines claiming that sex education would only breed a “culture of promiscuity” and produce a generation of “sex maniacs”. Opposing the popular interpretation, Dep-Ed stresses that sex education is not about the act of sex but rather about the science of reproduction, proper physical care and hygiene, proper values, the norms of interpersonal relations, and being aware of issues surrounding prevalence of pre-marital sex and teenage pregnancy. As a government institution, Dep-Ed believes that it is their duty to educate students on sex and responsibilities that surround it. Indeed, Dep-Ed deems that a breed of culture with interpersonal awareness is being molded by this ordinance. With these bewildering articulations and statements, two prevailing sectors of the society are squabbling and in the midst of crucial decisions – uncontrollable, contrary, and unyielding. These debates on sex education give rise to opinions of the most affected subject – the youths. Weighing the rationale of the church and the Department of Education, it is very critical to come up to a profound conclusion. The treatment of sex as a taboo discourse is the culprit of this substantial confusion. It is rooted from the backward colonial notions of morality and from our culture’s instigation of a negative picture of it. We conceal the blatant act and digress our eyes just into the outcome that may bring bliss or trouble, outcome that changes one’s disposition. On the other hand, in the sex education debate, many find themselves torn between prolife and pro-choice. Can we possibly have it both ways? The conventions of sex education are debatable and having the nation rambled while the church and the Department of education discern their own principles. As of now, there is no definite answer to this argumentation. The “yes-no” button for the upright choice is still handled by the public and still on its stride to the person sanctioned for giving an irrevocable verdict for this debate.

In this context, participants utterly burn their midnight oils and work with enthusiasm and strong determination to rub away their competitors and detractors and to bring home the sweetest victory. However, the final verdict will be handed by the judges keeping it divisive with nerve-wracking excitement. Indeed, the table of judgment must not be surrounded by any intervening suggestions or interferences coming from the audiences ignoring their positions and supremacy. Unfortunately, these premises are being deviated to upsetting scenarios nowadays wherein winners are being judged based on the influence of their envoys and not on the substance of their answers and perspectives. Cavite National High School is renowned for its genuine disposition and inevitable eyes for a vast array of aspects in education – not to be con-

trolled by the superiority of influential personalities. It is very dismaying to allow hollow victories for the majority is looking forward for fair decisions to be able to recognize and acknowledge those participants whose talents and abilities are reflective and remarkable. It is an offense to overuse power and influence the majority just to pull off a certain egocentric goal. It is unproductive to conceal the truth just to be involved in the partial compensation to those who lend help for an institution. And above all, it is appalling to make an oblivious ruling to those participants and students who are best in their respective fields. Time, effort, perseverance, and brainpower are the ventures for this contests and in every single way, we must commit to our minds that these ventures are priceless and do not go along with influence and travesties. As Filipinos whose goals are about molding true talents and as Caviteñans legendary for our exceptional endowments, let us advocate and maintain genuineness. Let us be fair and remain pure though we are effacing intricacies in resolving biased predicaments. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, First of all I would like to congratulate you for having this newspaper published. It helps students like me be informed about the current happenings within our school. It is in my knowledge that the school keeps in mind the students' welfare that is why every aspect of the educational system is carefully examined and planned. I could not help but notice that this year's schedule had been compressed and most importantly non-academic subjects are inserted in-between academic subjects. This means that after we take our Filipino subject, we will leave our room and proceed to the field for our MAPEH subject and back again inside the campus for our Social Studies. The travel time alone consumes a few minutes that cause students to be late. It is also easier for the students to cut classes because they are literally outside the classroom. What suggestions can you give to us students who are having a difficult time because of our schedule? Is there anything we could to help our classmates avoid cutting classes and minimize the problem? We were informed that there are subject teachers who won’t permit late comers to join the class or else scolded for slothfulness. Because the late comers do not want to be scolded and realizes they are late anyway, they decide to cut class. What you said is of great concern indeed so we suggest that following: · If it would take you too much time to vacate your room, you should at least haste to avoid being scolded. If you live quite far from campus and you always end up being late from lunch, you can bring your lunch and eat at the school canteen. It will not only help you with your hectic schedule but it will also help you save energy and money. · If there are times that your teacher tends to ‘extend’ their time and you still have other subjects to attend, you can always remind them that it is time to go without offending them. We think that teachers should also be considerate toward students regarding the matter because students are the ones having difficulties like shuttling from one room to another. Also, in our opinion, there should be a review on our schedule for adjustments. We strongly believe that academic subjects should be scheduled in the morning since these are the major ones and the non-academic subjects should be scheduled in the afternoon or vice versa. A+ for Ohmee Plus WHAT does Ohmee’s SOCA and PNoy’s SONA have in common? Aside from being a speech of two liberal party members, both the SOCA and SONA gained both negative and mostly positive comments from people who attended the said events. Mayor Ohmee’s localized version of SONA was less prestigious, and less popular. All of these were obviously because the city was small and the president himself wanted government offices and officials to spend the nation’s money wisely. If PNoy mentioned all about the MWSS controversy, and the intensified execution of traffic laws, Mayor Ohmee introduced his OHMEE PLUS Agenda. But what is this OHMEE PLUS Agenda anyway? Why has it received such positive comments from the people who attended the first SOCA? So, as discussed from the earlier article, OHMEE PLUS is an acronym for the Mayor’s plans for the growing problems of our city. We already identified the meaning of each acronym earlier so we’ll elaborate things in here. First, let’s have the “O”: Organizational, Human Resource, Government Modernization Program and Fiscal Management Program. This plan aims to have improved streamline bureaucracy, capability building, information technology, and fiscal policies to increase revenues. This is to improve the city government’s services to the caviteños. Next, we have the “H”: Health and improved basic services for the elderly, disabled, vulnerable youth and abused. This program aims to give cure and help for the malnourished, senior citizens, persons with disability, street children, abused persons, and mentally disturbed persons. The “M”: Marketing and promotion of the City’s Tourism and Investment potential. Our city played a major role in the revolutions that paved way for the country’s freedom from the Spanish rule hundreds of years ago. A lot of places inside our city are indeed of great historical value, that’s why our city government aims to use this as an asset for our city’s tourism. This includes comprehensive tourism development plan, tourism infrastructure development program and promotion, and an investment incentive code. The “E”: Employment, innovative fishery, aquaculture, and infrastructure development and modernization program. Being called as the city with three bays, our city has an ample

amount of water surrounding us. The problem is, we don’t have enough useful water around us because most of the bays are already polluted, harmful, and unfit for human consumption. This is why the government officials planned to have a public employment service office, skills training, fishery and aquaculture modernization and infrastructure development program. Another “E”: Education, Environment and Enterprise Development. In spite of the enough number of schools inside the city, there were still tons of out of school youths. This program aims to increase elementary participation rate and secondary completion rate. It also wishes to have additional school buildings, material recovery facility, and solid waste management plan, together with small and medium enterprise development plan. Now, let’s have the second word, PLUS. Start with “P”: Peace and Order. It aims to have additional police personnel in accordance to standard ratio, to upgrade mobility and logistics, to have barangay coordination, and community cooperation. Let’s have the “L”: Legislative Coordination. It roots for close coordination with ‘sangguniang panlunsod’ on legislations that is required by the city to attract investments, increase revenue, infrastructure development and fiscal management. If scholar Lee Sun Joon of Sungkyunkwan Scandal aims ‘political harmony’ among Norons, Sorons, and Namins, our city government aims for “U”: Unity in Politics. This program includes dialogue with different political organizations and crossing party lines on issues that will benefit the city and its constituents. Last, but definitely not the least, the “S”: Safety and Security. This refers to disaster readiness and awareness. To avoid being on the headlines announcing massive destruction of our city, the local government would like to have a city and barangay level disaster management program to prepare every caviteños for any possible disaster. A pleasing and systematic plan isn’t it? With proper execution, and everyone’s cooperation, these programs will surely be far from a dream.

Venus Raj’s “Major Major” Legacy VENUS Raj’s Filipina beauty may not have succeeded in bringing home the crown but she left the world something that will be hard to forgetthe expression “major major”. The term was first heard in Miss Raj’s answer in the Q and A portion. The question was about Raj’s biggest mistake in her life and how she made it right which was asked by Hollywood actor William Baldwin. She first greeted the cheering crowd and replied, “You know what sir, in my 22 years of existence, I can say that there’s nothing major major problem that I’ve done in my life because I’m very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I’m here. Thank you, thank you so much!” Before the pageant, she was the crowd favorite became the fourth runner-up because

of her answer. It was probably because of her nervousness that made her use that term. So can you blame her? It is difficult to represent a country especially when it is aired live all over the globe. After the Q and A, Raj’s answer became a hot topic in social networking sites especially twitter and other media. Nowadays, the term “major major” is widely used. Because of its popularity, this could actually replace the word “Jejemon”, an exaggerated way of using words that is usually used in texting, as the “Word of the Year”. As the term gains popularity, there’s no doubt that this will be Venus Raj’s road to stardom.

Frankl y Speaking…. ankly “IF they still have even a shred of shame in themselves, they would step down from their respective positions”, says President Benigno Aquino Jr. Newly elected President Simeon Benigno Aquino Aquino Jr. shocks the country with his intriguing state of the nation address. He spoke with great authority without fear but in a matter of one seeking justice. Who wouldn’t be if one would discover that billions of the country’s budget is being used for personal necessities? He mentioned about a P196.7 billion budget deficit due to the bloody government’s personal usage. This therefore states that their bills are indeed higher than its profit. Also, a calamity fund of P108 million pesos that was supposed to be given as support to those who were inflicted by storms Ondoy and Pepeng was known to be used in Pampanga. This also adds the use of road user’s fund. The big question is: “Where are all those money being used?” As suspected, the government cannot explain this thoroughly and the issue is still under investigation as of now. We can only hope that government investigators will have the stiff resolve. As for our President Aquino Jr., we salute his authenticity for speaking the true state of our beloved nation. This is surely a big step for the rise of our country. More power and glory to him! May God bless us as our country faces a traumatic aftershock from the past administration.

Online P-NOY JUST recently, the palace has launched its official website where Filipinos can give and plunge their comments, queries, and suggestions regarding social and political concerns of our country. For the past nine years, the Filipino advocacy about the bias administration has been ignored and condemned by the palace, and now that President Benigno Aquino III is leading our country, social problems and recommended resolutions about the nationwide issues can be heeded in an easier and more convenient way – through social networking sites. In this context, the websites specifically the social networking sites such as facebook, multiply, and twitter serve as an avenue to assess the government inaction and to urge the state to create policies for the people’s welfare. Through this, millions of Filipinos can understand the basic reforms of the government through the comprehensive response of the palace and nascent discussion in the internet. Moreover, this executive order creates a friendly image of the newly established administration and smashes the wide barrier between the correlation of the Filipino people and the Palace. This easy and trouble-free of communication to the president, however, is not a gimmick or a half-baked trick for it imposes the needs and demands of Filipino about the clarity and significance of the disseminated orders affecting different aspects of our nation and the requisites of our country to achieve the developmental goals. P-Noy’s administration is doing its best to fulfill and pursue the objectives in achieving genuine change and continues to distinguish itself from the past administration which left an appalling image. t was a cloudy Saturday morning. I woke up late because it was hectic day yesterday at school. We came home very late because of the Division Schools Press Conference last night.

I was still hazy when I went downstairs to eat my brunch. The clock tells me that it is already 10:19 and I have to dress up ‘coz I need to go to my classmate’s house in Noveleta (a nearby town to us) for we will work for our school paper. My house is an old, antique house near the city market and I need to walk a couple of blocks to catch a ride. As I was walking, I can’t help but notice the huge sacks of rubbish along side the streets. It is such an eye-sore. The streets are filled with children begging for pennies. It makes me remember the song of Glock-9 about politicians who see the problems but they chose not to see. I rode the jeepney to the bus station. Talk about irony, the song playing in the jeep is non-other than Glock-9’s “Upuan.” As I’m on my way, the

traffic was very heavy. It took me thirty minutes to a usual 10-minute ride. No wonder, the road is being reconstructed again. Half of the road is closed because of the ordeal. But when the bus moved a little farther, I saw the real reason for the slow movement, a huge signboard which reads “SLOW DOWN, MEN AT WORK.” Men at work? Where are those men at work? All that is left is a damaged road sunken by flood brought about by the heavy rain last night. The bus then went to a smooth ride as we travel the winding road locally known as the “long beach” for it is a narrow path through Cavite’s wellknown beaches. The sight is breathtaking. I don’t know but there’s just something about the waters than calms my stressed soul. But it was far from my knowledge that the scenery

is short lived. The clear waters turned into a dried wasteland. Where did all the water go? What happened to the flowing creek? It was just recent that I saw some local folks fishing in it. It saddened me. Looking back at my trip, I can say that it was my “Road to Damascus” experience. The bible tells a story of Apostle Paul making his turn-about as he was walking the said road. It was his encounter with God that his views were changed totally. The same with me... I came to a realization that we are really living near the end. The climate nowadays is not as stable as it used to. It was just last year that the heavens poured out a month’s rain in just one day drowning nearby towns and the metro. I need to do my part in helping saving mother earth. Who would have thought that a simple road trip will open my eyes and change my views completely? I can’t wait for my next trip.

Li ving Lif e to the Fullest Living Life

A Tribute to Mr. Rogelio Landas (1961-2010)

SOME good things never last. A teacher’s duty to his students is no exception from such cliché. After years of battling with renal failure, Mr. Rogelio “Roger” Landas finally closes his classroom, bidding his students goodbye - forever. A melancholic Monday morning loomed within the campus. Except for those who have learned about his demise during the weekend, not one soul was able to escape the feeling of grief, a tear dropping from the eye, and a gasp, “Sir Roger is gone?!!” How can somebody so bubbly be gone so soon? I just saw him few days ago trying to race with his students as they solve those mind boggling problems in Algebra! They say that he is actually a diabetic. How come I saw him gulping down a bottle of soda just few weeks ago? What about the motorcycle ride? The black shoulder bag? The mathematical solutions written on the board, on the teacher’s table, to the wall, and up to the classroom door? How about those of a ballerina’s pirouette moves that he does every time that he discuss his lesson? Aren’t all these an indication that he is vigorous enough to stay in the service a little longer? Loads of questions that needs to be answered. But I

never realized that I’ll find the answers in a most unusual way. It was a Friday morning. Although I used to see the teachers wearing their pink uniforms during Friday’s, my eye still hurts with the dominant color for the day! Why, even teachers who were known to display a “toughie look” was garbed in pink blouses or shirts! Classes were also shortened until twelve noon that day. I heard that today will be the funeral of Mr. Landas. But I was not prepared to hear and see the rest of the situation later that afternoon. As I march along with other students, teachers, and people in the street on our way to the church where Sir Landas will receive his final blessing, I can’t help but ask myself, “Why

do I have this feeling that I am joining a ‘karakol‘?” Instead of a funeral dirge, people were actually dancing as the band plays “Itaktak Mo”, and “Sabay Sabay Tayo”. Then a nechrological service followed suit after the mass. Hearing those words from Mr. Landas’ friends and colleagues enlightened my mind and provided answers to my questions. I find most of the things about his death very unusual, but later on I realized, he wanted it to be that way. He planned it to be that way. Not even his weakening body would trample him to his final destination. He has lived his life to the fullest, worrying not over the seriousness of his condition. Though I was not given the chance to work with Sir Landas as his student, his life inspired me in more ways than one. I realized, life on earth is too short so, it is but just fair for one to enjoy it to the fullest. Mr. Landas did more than just enjoy and celebrate his life. He actually taught people around him to face everything with courage and happiness. The institution will never be the same without the humor and laughter of Mr. Rogelio Landas, but one thing is for sure… He will always be remembered in everyone’s heart. Farewell Sir, and thank you for the inspiration.

My Unique T eacher Teacher eacher,, My One Hero “TO educate one’s life is as simple as baking pancakes, but the fallout after it is very advantageous for an individual’s existence.” We all know that teachers are our second parent in school. They guide, teach and discipline us for us to be armed and ready as we try to struggle our way and have a good and bright future. We are with them five days a week (unless we’re absent, ha ha). We seldom care about how they feel. I can only imagine the stress we give them everyday as they encounter different students inside the classroom. On the other hand, we can’t help but notice that teachers are also of different kinds. Here are some of them. Of course, first in line are those very strict teachers of whom students call “Ms. Terror.” She disciplines her students in a way that she uses a knee shaking, eardrum breaking, loud voice that makes his students panic and frightened of her. You feel like you’re enrolled in a military camp wherein you fall in line, shirts tucked in and hairs cut neatly. Because of her way of treating her students, she is more feared than adored even though she is really a good teacher. I can’t really say that we’ll miss those very intelligent teachers or “The Bookworms.” They are those who can profoundly explain a lesson (without any book at hand!) that leaves his students jaw-dropped

and in awe. God’s gift to the students. There are also those good teachers of whom we’ll always remember. She is “Ms. Congeniality” because of her very considerate way of caring for her students. She always keeps in her mind

that the more she shows better attitude toward her students, the more the possibility that they will listen to her and learn. Then we have “The Cock-adoodle-doos.” They are the personalities who always exaggerate their pride and accomplishments to others, especially to their students. They always (and I mean always!) tell you what their life was before, how they overcome their life’s struggles, and most especially their ACHIEVEMENTS. “The Kikays” and “The Hunks” that always looks younger than their students. They are known for having a strong charisma to their students. They are always swarmed by a group of students who always find a way to ask questions, questions that are sometimes irrelevant, just to talk to their teachers. Every Friday feels like a fashion

Bryan Louis G. Lazaro show as they showcase their best dresses and polo shirts. And lastly, “The Jacks.” Those crack-head teachers that tell jokes and makes you laugh so hard you want to cry. Every class time is fun time. He manages to make learning fun that makes you want to forget those boring teachers. They are easy to approach and very lenient. These are just some of the teachers that we have encountered in school. After reading this article, it might put a smile on your face. Let us just remember that although we may find flaws with the way they teach, let’s admit that no matter whom they are or what they do, we owe them our future. And that is enough to thank them. GUdpM ~ PoWh!! pW3d3 poeWh bAh mkIpaHtXtm8..??? sW33t dReAmZZ poeWh..:) The invitation unfolds, and the finger scrambles to delete the unwanted SMS. Forget the gay lingo or swardspeak. These days, a new code of communication has the whole cyber community confused and annoyed. Jejenese, or the jejemon language, has been under public scrutiny, earning the wrath of grammarians and drawing even an all-out war from Department of Education. The alternate small letter-caps spelling has grown to such a phenomenon that the word 'Jejemon' itself is nominated as the word of the year by the academe. In an era when networking sites can substitute for face-to-face interaction and forum, the Jejemon has joined the ranks of the jologs, the bakya, and the low-life which the middle-class has bestowed inferior status. The crusade against the Jejemons continues, underscoring the class bias behind every EoW pOwH and the perfect, seamless sentence. Hu Iz THIS, p0h? From this unusual style of texting, a subculture has emerged. The jejemons are no longer just anonymous texters or facebook users; they are considered annoying people unworthy of a decent conversation, mostly due to their disregard for grammar and spelling. The closest image of a jejemon that comes to mind: the people loitering inside and outside the CNHS grounds, holding cellphones with loud music flaunting their oversized stuffs - shades, shirts, and shoes (supra). This identity, however, was not created by the Jejemons themselves. The definition of the Urban Dictionary for Jejemons attests that the Jejemon identity was formulated by people who do not use, and probably despise, Jejenese. Jejemons were described by the site as individuals with low I Q and spread idiocy on the web. In this manner, people who communicate in Jejenese are subjected to an outside gaze that dictates their identity, similar to how the westerns exoticized the people living their colonies. NOT LyK mE, NOT ~LyK~US As part of the mechanism of differentiation, aggression against the Jejemon has intensified in cyberspace. From hostile stares to facebook fanpages demanding the annihilation of the Jejemon, the frenzy to eliminate the subclass has become a mission of cleansing for other people. In the minds of these avid haters, the Jejemon is a malfunction in the sphere of communication. The jejemon has insulted the rules of grammar and syntax in language and according to the jejebuster, he deserves to be annihilated. This perception against the Jejemon language clashes with the supposed democratic spaces of the internet, where everyone is free to invent himself through avatars and escape the rigors of the material world. Jejenese, after all, is only another variation of the many ways by which people communicate. It is no different from the coño manner of speaking, where Filipino and English are interspersed in a sentence, and the speakers are forgiven for the obvious attempt to copy the American slang. For the jejebuster, adherence to grammatical rules is compliance to the order, which places them in a stratum above people deprived of quality education and decent jobs. To fight the jejemon, then, equates to an assertion of the superiority. The Dep-Ed reaction to the Jejemon, meanwhile, could be read as the agency's denial of their failure to provide education for all. HU cArEs, n0h ~ LoLz! Despite the strong opposition to Jejemons, the group has grown more resilient and has even adapted to the schemes to eliminate them. The jejemons have lived to their identity, embraced their own brand of typing and counters negative feedback with assertions of the right to express themselves. They continue to flood concerts, chat rooms, and have even gained allies that defend them and their subculture. The jejebuster and grammar Nazis claim that the jejemon wreaks grammatical havoc into infinite world of cyberspace. While they may be right, they fail to realize the real havoc caused by the jejephenomenon. The spontaneous, eben unconscious, generation of codes only signifies the brewing rebellion against a social order that serves a few and marginalizes everyone. As the jejemon counters the vanguards of petty propriety in language, we get a glimpse of the struggle among classes.

L.A. LAKERS EARN SECOND STRAIGHT RING, ‘09-‘10 THE Los Angeles Lakers defeated their longtime rival Boston Celtics in front of the sold out crowd of the Staples Center, 83-79, grabbing their second straight championship. This marks the franchise’s 16th league championship and its 5th in the last 10 years. Los Angeles steamrolled through the regular season as they tallied an impressive 57-25 recored, third overall behind the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Lakers’ 2009 Finals opponent, the Orlando Magic. With impressive frontline players Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest and deep bench backups – plus the coaching expertise of Phil Jackson, the Lakers were a destined for a backto-back. The top seed in the west Lakers hurdled through the Oklahoma City Thunder who managed to steal 2 surprising wins before going down in Game 6. Then they swept the Utah Jazz and took out Arizona’s finest, the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Finals. One thing separated them from the Larry O’Brien trophy: the Boston Celtics. The NBA’s most storied rivalry would meet again for a

record 12th time. Los Angeles won the series opener, defeating Boston with a convincing 13-point margin. All that did was wake the Celtics up. Boston retaliated by taking game 2. The team’s intensity mirrored in Paul Pierce’s statement as he proclaimed, ‘We ain’t going back to L.A.”. The Lakers quickly silenced him, winning game 3 and thereby guaranteeing a 6 th game in L.A. Celtic pride proved resilient, and Boston triumphed in Game 4. Things suddenly looked bleak for the Purple and Gold in Game 5, when the Celtics closed out their home stand with their 3rd win in the best-of-7 series, pushing the Lakers into a do-or-die situation. In a series that wasn’t expected to go the distance, the Celtics put up enough of a fight to force a dramatic Game 7 in Los Angeles. Defense dictated the final game. In the end, it was Lakers’ wild card acquisition of Ron Artest once again

TheCAV had the privilege of interviewing two of Cavite City's promising Taekwondo heavy hitters, CNHS' Kristia Advincula and SSCR's Sumher Francisco. Sum: Aba syempre 'pag meron ang isang babae mahirap. Tuloy pa rin kasi ang practice kahit ganon. How do you manage your time between academics and sports? Tia: Ang training ko every Fridays and Saturdays lang naman after class so 'di s'ya gaanong kumakain ng oras ko. Training 'pag weekends tapos aral naman 'pag weekdays. CARABAOS CRUSH BAYCATS, 76-52 The September 27 bout between the CNHS Carabaos and SSC-R High School Baycats was a sweet day for the Josephinian crowd – the Carabaos pulverize the Sebastinians in the Men’s Basketball Championship of the Division Selection Meet at the St. Joseph College open court, 76-52. The game started as a close game where the two teams struggle to take the lead but because of the tight defence of Cavite High, it suddenly became a blow-out mid second quarter. The Maroons never looked back as they dominated the rest of the game. “Sa tuwing nagta-trap kami sa kalaban, nawawala sila at sa opensa naman ay may play kami kaya madali para sa amin ang maka-shoot,” Carabao Captain Juncel Ricohermoso justifies as he elevated his team with an impressive 15 re-

bounds. The Baycats tried to cut the deficit mid third quarter but the Carabaos proved strong for them. Instead of being intimidated, they proved that they were destined to win. At their young age, they stood out against all other year levels. Being the team captain, Jobelle Ontemara of II-Guava handled her team well that‘s way they got the 1st Place, followed by Juniors (2nd Place), Seniors (3 rd Place) and Freshmen in 4th. The sophomores showed the real essence of being a champion. “Nagpakita ng kooperasyon ang bawat isa kaya masaya kami na kami ang nag-Champion. Sulit lahat ng training at pagod,” team captain Ontemara commented. Because of their cooperation and faith with each other, they all went home with a smile on their faces and the honor that will serve as proof that they have achieved what they sought after.

Off the Mark FOR the past decades, the Cavite National High School Intramurals has been marked by loud and joyful cheers, colorful and vigorous crowd, successful opening and significant closing. It has become the most anticipated annual inter-school activity, noteworthy for its themes which have brought positive reception to students and athletes. The Montano Hall as a “big venue” for this event, however, has also become a huge part of its success. This year, the CNHS Intramurals was smeared by annoying orders, bias intrusions, numerous errors, and hollow applause. The people were basked under the sun and many joyful acts were then cut due to intense heat and scorching atmosphere, all because of an open, limited, and small area that was prearranged for the event. Montano Hall, which was the supposed venue, was closed and dismal during the event. Frowns and irritations, discontentment and complaints – the argument of this year’s intramurals. Many were blowing off their fuses in the outcome of the event. As for them, the City Government should have concurred to the demand of students that Montano hall should be used as the venue of the Intramurals. The wide and brand-new hall stands as a fraud adornment in the City, only to be used for exclusive occasions. Moreover, it is entitled for the city’s extravagance. Another thing is the vast array of travesty. “Familiar” faces have shown intervention in the crucial event and played their illicit roles to embed selfcentered purposes. Influential faction has been looked at and earned side-by-side comments from the audience. Though covered with the bubbling effect of the showcase, it did not turn all that great for the performance seemed to be mapped for winning. And as expected, they won. Turning this annoying issue to the highlight and genuine subject of the Intramurals which is the sport itself and the athletes gripped, again, allegations take over. First off is the implementation and distribution of venues of the athletes. It came out to be very absurd that the designated venues of each event were outside the campus, not only meters away but kilometers to be exact. The students were not able to witness the conventions of each game, especially the big games such as basketball and volleyball. Although the press representatives have seen them all, they had hard times covering each game for the venues were very distant from each other and the schedule was quite inconsistent. It was like an Intramurals in nowhere with no one’s knowledge. “Di ko feel na intrams ngayon!” a CNHS coño added. Regrettably, the awarding ceremony was also condemned for its absence in the event. The athletes who were subjected to intensive trainings, overly extreme preparation, and hectic schedules were not recognized and were completely ignored. Indeed, it can be wrapped up that this year’s intramurals has been oblivious to many aspects and has given an awful rhetoric. Above all, it is very dismaying to reflect about the exasperating situations of this year’s CNHS Intramurals for we are used to celebrate it without beyond censures and complaints. The students and their negative reactions toward the failure of this event only show their tremendous support and desires to a productive school event like this. We cannot blame them for grimacing and for bearing strong dislikes for they are the colors and major subject of this remarkable event. In this light, we appeal to the authorized persons and organizations to pull off a successful intramurals in the coming years and must light up the torch of a new beginning.

Miss Freshmen wins Miss Intrams crown “I do believe in magic!” Iana Joy T. Famy captured the Miss Intramurals 2010 title as she dazzled the crowd in front of the Montano Hall Stadium, August 26. The program began with the candidates introducing themselves. After their introductions, the young ladies were put on the spot as they answered the questions given by the judges followed by their presentations for the talent portion. Miss Freshmen showcased her skills in playing the “Kulintang” as she performed the native dance “Singkil” together with the Teatro Baile de Cavite. Miss Sophomore gave her bast as she danced to

Florina Y. Araño Kesha’s hit single “Tic Toc” with the D’Voyz Creation as her back-ups. Miss Junior shook her body as she performed a belly dancing repertoire. Finally, Miss Seniors fired up the dance floor as she ended the talents extravaganza with a hot number. After the scores were tallied, Iana Joy Famy bagged the title and the Miss Talent special award. This was her reason why she didn’t feel much pressure all throughout the competition. The first runner up, Miss Sophomore, uttered that she was so overwhelmed by the fact that among all the pretty girls of Cavite National High School, she was able to have the second spot for Miss Intramurals 2010. For two consecutive years, the freshmen ruled the Miss Intramurals competition, overshadowing pretty ladies from the higher year levels.
