Maserati is making a comeback with the flat MC20. This super sports car will resurrect the genes of the traditional brand and become the new flagship.

Eine Nische ist ein Ausschnitt aus dem Gesamten, dessen Bedürfnisprofil noch nicht oder unzureichend erfüllt wird. Entstehen kann eine solche Nische, wenn sich die Nachfrage abrupt entwickelt oder sich das Angebot proaktiv verändert. Kurz gesagt: Eine Nische ist eine Chance. Auch in 2020. Auch in Zeiten von Corona. Und was macht ein Hersteller wie Maserati mit frei werdenden Räumen? Er stellt ein neues Auto rein. Man wartet nicht (mehr) darauf, dass der Markt, also wir, explizit etwas verlangt. Man nimmt Bedarf vorweg. Denkt in Entwicklungen. Scheinbar so einfach ist das.

Maserati erklärt es selbst: Viele Dinge seien im Wandel – die Begeisterung für Supersportler bleibe. Denn die ist in unserer Zeit ein stückweit entkoppelt von bloßer Kraft und Energie. Fahren macht Freude, wenn man sich wohlfühlt. Im und mit dem Auto. Wenn man durch Perfektion, Qualität und Innovation bestätigt wird in seiner Wahl. Wenn man etwas vorfindet, an das man noch gar nicht gedacht hat. Wenn aus italienischem Dolce Vita aufregende Sportlichkeit wird, ohne Verlust von Alltagstauglichkeit. Man soll ja vorausschauend fahren, so heißt es. Mit dem MC20 besinnt sich die Marke mit dem Dreizack auf erfolgreiche Motorsportzeiten und setzt nicht nur optisch ein Ausrufezeichen. So will Maserati neue Beziehungen aufbauen. Und das, ohne sich anzubiedern.

A niche is part of something complete, whose needs profile is not yet fulfilled or is inadequately fulfilled. Such a niche can arise when demand develops suddenly or supply changes proactively. In short, a niche represents an opportunity. In 2020 too. And also during the corona pandemic. And what does a manufacturer like Maserati do with rooms that become free? It displays a new car in these rooms. A company does not wait (any longer) for the market, i.e. the general public, to demand something explicit. Demand is anticipated. Thinking takes the form of developments. This seems so easy.

Maserati says it itself: many things are changing – but the enthusiasm for super sports cars remains. That's because the modern age is largely disconnected to some degree from sheer power and energy. Driving is fun when you feel good. In and with a car. When your choice is confirmed through perfection, quality and innovation. When you find something which you hadn’t even thought about. When Italian dolce vita becomes exciting sportiness without losing any suitability for daily use. It's said you should drive with foresight. In the MC20 the brand with the trident recalls successful motorsport eras and focuses not only on stylistic visual touches. Maserati wants to establish new relationships for instance. Without being ingratiating.

Seit 1939 ist die Marke mit dem Dreizack in der Viale Ciro Menotti zu Hause. Dies ist ein einzigartiger Ort, der mit der Bezeichnung Fabrik nicht mal annähernd richtig beschrieben ist. Am besten passt die Bezeichnung Werkstatt und diese Werkstatt hat eine weitere Besonderheit: hier wird per Hand produziert.

The brand with the trident has called Viale Ciro Menotti its home since 1939. This is a unique place where the term factory is nowhere near an accurate description. The term workshop is best suited to Maserati. And the workshop has another special feature, i.e. production by hand.

Man will sich neuen Kunden nähern. Solchen, die – wie die Marke selbst – an der Schwelle zum Neuen stehen. Deren Lebenswelten sich verändern, besser: entwickeln. Das klingt positiver. Euphorischer. Bedarf und Fokus verschieben sich, gewisse Standards aber nicht. Autos wie der MC20 öffnen sich. Laden ein. Polarisieren aber auch. Und das ist gut so.

The company wants to approach new customers, i.e. people who – like the brand itself – are standing on the threshold of something new. Whose lives are changing or, better still, are developing. That sounds more positive. More euphoric. Demand and the focal point are shifting, but certain standards stay the same. Cars like the MC20 are opening up. Are inviting. But they also polarise people. And that’s a good thing.

Perfekt, wenn sich eine Marke neu erfindet. „Kurze Überhänge, große Räder und jede Menge Dynamik im Design sprechen eine eigene Sprache“, so Designchef Klaus Busse.

Perfect when a brand reinvents itself. “Short overhangs, large wheels and any amount of dynamism speak their own language,” said Klaus Busse, Head of Design.

Der MC20 ist flach – sehr flach! Steht der groß gewachsene Designchef Klaus Busse neben dem Sportwagen, fragt man sich tatsächlich, ob er in den Wagen überhaupt reinpasst. 1,22 Meter misst die erste von drei Koordinaten, in die der Wagen unterteilt ist: die Höhe. So hoch, dass der Fahrer – selbst Busse – genug Platz und Kopffreiheit hat. Aerodynamisch sei der MC20 so gestaltet, dass ein „Long-TailEffekt“ entstehe, der dem eines Coupés gleicht. Die Luft liegt extrem sauber am Fahrzeug an und separiert sich erst am Heck. Das bedeutet: geringer Luftwiderstand und damit höherer Topspeed. Der liegt beim MC20 bei 325 km/h. The MC20 is flat – very flat! When the tall Head of Design Klaus Busse stands next to the sports car, you actually ask yourself whether he will really fit in the car. Measuring 1.22 metres, the height is the first out of three coordinates into which the car is divided. The car is so high that the driver – even Busse – has enough space and headroom. The MC20 has an aerodynamic design which creates a “long tail effect” resembling that of a coupé. The air lies very cleanly on the vehicle and is only separated at the rear. This means low air resistance and therefore a higher top speed. The top speed of the MC20 is 325 km/h.
