Question & Answer Attorney Tara Millan Question: How do my medical bills get paid if I am in a car accident?

n se fia 3D a r gia og di nolo a R ch Te

Answer: We get asked this question a

lot. This answer assumes you were not working when you were in the accident. Tara Millan If you get in an accident, whether the fault is yours or not, and you are insured under an Oregon policy, or are in a car which is insured under an Oregon policy, there is “PIP coverage.” PIP stands for personal injury protection-think of it as medical bill payment coverage. PIP pays the medical bills which are found to be related to the injuries you sustain in the accident. Most people have only the Oregon minimum of $15,000 of PIP coverage. Certain insurers sell more coverage and I personally always buy the most PIP coverage possible and think it is a good idea to do so. The PIP coverage applies to medical bills incurred within a year of the accident date and up to $15,000, as long as they “reasonably relate” to the injuries you sustain from the accident. Determining what injuries are related to the accident, and thus what bills should be paid, is where problems can arise with the insurance company. Simply because the coverage is available does not mean it has to be paid out. The insurer will seek to cut off benefits as soon as possible. If you use up the $15,000 coverage, there may be other PIP coverage available to you. For example, other PIP coverage from other policies within the household (yours or sometimes that of the person whose car you may be in) may be able to be tapped. If and when all the PIP is used up, and you still need medical care, your health insurance, if you have it, will kick in to provide coverage. PIP also pays other benefits, like wage loss and for help around the house, but that question is best answered in another column. You can submit your legal questions to civil or criminal Attorney Tara Millan on millanpreguntas@gmail.com. Caminos Magazine regularly publishes the questions and answers column. Attorney Tara Millan will not respond to emails and sending an email to millanpreguntas@gmail.com does not establish an attorney-client relationship.

Cartas de la Universidad /College Letters Maria “Lupita” Vargas Written by Tito Onesto, Student at the University of Oregon

My first full month of winter term has flown by mostly

due to the fact that I have a fairly light schedule since I am only taking three classes this term. My Film Studies class has opened my eyes to a ton of classic movies that I would have never seen, films like The Godfather, Easy Rider, and Mean Streets just to name a few. My Marketing class is not a difficult class since I am familiar with a lot of the marketing concepts. My Gateway 3 class is my only journalism class this term and I have been learning how to get my work noticed by a bigger audience and how to manipulate the internet in my favor. So far this term has been nothing but good to me and I look forward to seeing what lies ahead for the rest of the term.

This month I had the pleasure to interview Maria

“Lupita” Vargas who is attending Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Lupita graduated from South Medford High School and was part of the Girls’ Basketball team that won state in

2012, during her senior year. Upon graduating she chose to attend Bates where she is Sociology major while minoring in Education and French. Lupita is part of Latinos Unidos, the Bates Catholic Club all while playing basketball for the varsity team. On top of her club and athletics she holds down two different jobs, she is a Junior Advisor for a first year floor and she is doing American Reads/America Counts.

Crime Stoppers is a non-profit group that helps citizens assist the Medford Police Department and all other Jackson and Josephine county law enforcement agencies by reporting information on criminal activity. Crime Stoppers works by providing a phone number for citizens to report information. The number connects the caller with a live person who will assign the caller a “file number” and keep the report confidential to help protect anonymity. Reporting information on criminal activity to Crime Stoppers may potentially be rewarded with up to $1,000.00 in cash. To contact Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon, call 1-800-850-0580. The callers will answer in English, but they have staff on hand who speak Spanish. Information on Crime Stoppers is available from multiple sources. It is featured every Tuesday at 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm on KTVL Channel 10, highlighting local and regional crimes that require information from the public. It is featured every week in the Mail Tribune newspaper. Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon has their own Facebook page that contains information about regional crimes. his month I interviewed Jasper Benjamin Orndorff or “ Benny O.” Benjamin, a senior at South Medford High School, runs track and plays for the varsity basketball team. His position on the basketball team is shooting guard and small forward and proudly wears jersey number 22. His love for basketball began in third grade when he became involved in a team at the YMCA.

Playing for the YMCA team was the starting point to become a future South Medford Panther. He started playing for South as a freshman, but, by his junior year, he was part of the varsity team. His favorite part of playing for South is that it is a very successful program with a great coaching staff and teammates. Although, he gets along with his teammates, he said that they compete with each other in almost every drill or exercise, challenging one another and, in turn, making each other better. He enjoys basketball because of how fast-paced and exciting it is. He says “There are always opportunities to make big plays, and you can redeem yourself of a mistake within seconds because of the game dynamics and of its many aspects.” Sometimes a little mistake can cause the loss of the game, but as a player Benny does not enter the game to lose, but with the mentality of winning. He says that when he loses a game he always tries to keep his head held high and stay positive, “although it is very hard to do sometimes.”

opportunities to make big plays, and you can redeem yourself of a mistake within seconds because of the game dynamics and of it’s many aspects”

Although there are bad games, there are also good ones. One of the most memorable games that Benny has had was against Wilson; it was his first game as a varsity player in which he scored 18 points. Before a game Benny prepares himself by eating a Subway sandwich two hours before the game. This helps to give him enough energy to play. Benny’s strengths as a basketball player are his athleticism and his ability to run the court, whereas one of his weaknesses is scoring one on one. He says the success he has out in the court is with the help of his teammates: “Basketball is a team sport, and the ability to cooperate and work together on the court is essential to our success.” Ben has no personal goal set for himself this year, but for the team he wants to win the conference and get to the state tournament.

This is his last year as a South Medford Panther basketball player. He says he will miss the anticipation of sitting in class all day and not being able to wait for the game later that night! Benny will attend the University of Arizona Honors College on a $48,000 scholarship. He does not plan on playing college basketball, but wants to major in biology, then continue with medical school and residency. He wants to open up his own pediatric practice.

H E A LT H What is diabetes? Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, leading to high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not make insulin. Without insulin, blood Fernando Cendejas, MD glucose levels rise. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children or young adults. In type 2 diabetes, the body develops a resistance to insulin. Initially, the pancreas responds to insulin resistance by making more insulin in an effort to move glucose from the blood into the muscle cells and other cells. Eventually, the pancreas “tires” and stops making enough insulin. Blood glucose levels start rising. Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed in adults. Over the years, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nerve problems and amputation. Who is at risk for diabetes? You are more at risk to get diabetes if you have a parent or sibling with diabetes, older than 45, have had gestational diabetes, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, are overweight or are Hispanic, American Indian, Asian American or African American. Close to ten percent of all Latino Americans over the age of 20 have diabetes and many do not know it. Hispanic adults are almost twice more likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes as non-Hispanic whites. Hispanics also have higher rates of kidney disease caused by diabetes and are 50% more likely to die from diabetes as non-Hispanic whites. What are the signs and symptoms of diabetes? The symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, feeling hungry (even though eating), blurry vision and fatigue. Other signs and symptoms include losing feeling in your feet or having tingling in your feet and losing weight without trying. You may have one or more of these signs or symptoms before you are diagnosed with diabetes or you may have none at all. continued on page 12...

2 Years of Marriage

A

s we enter February, we enter a month where we recognize love and make it a focus for one day. Chocolates, teddy bears, jewelry, oh my! I know that it may sound cliché to say that we must not focus on love for just one day, we should celebrate it on a daily basis, but what is love without clichés? Some people have love to celebrate while others wish for it and seek it. For the ones that have successfully maintained a loving relationship, it brings up the valuable question of what makes a relationship successful? What are couples doing, not only on Valentine’s Day, but also on a regular basis to have a healthy relationship? What an appropriate month to reflect on this.

LOVE

Love is in the Details Every couple will remember how it all began. Most remember the initial stages of their relationship with such details that you can feel the excitement, nervousness, interest, and all the positive feelings that come with letting “it” happen. These details build onto more experiences where couples get to know everything about each other—from their strengths to their areas that need growth. John Gottman, Ph.D, from the University of Washington, studies couples and offers a couples activity called “I appreciate” where a couple lists their partner’s positive characteristics along with an incident that details each quality. This is a great way to reminisce on positive memories while recognizing each other’s qualities.

Turn Towards Each Other Not Away Conflict is not something that every couple looks forward to, but how you deal with conflict may bring you closer together. Some people fight and stay upset, some fight and want to avoid or forget the conflict, and some freeze and shut down their emotions. These counterproductive ways of dealing with conflict may create an emotional distance in a relationship. Successful couples will work on solving the problem rather than placing blame. They have developed the ability to see that conflict is an opportunity to learn and grow together. Rosie Mendoza, who has been married for 27 years, says that a relationship is two different halves coming together and admires a quote that says, “The perfect couple is not the one that never has problems, but despite their problems, they remain cohesive.” Becoming a Team Successful couples do not usually have personal unfulfilled dreams. They may have accomplished them before the relationship or accomplished them through their partner’s support. A good friend of mine shared that a successful couple is one that makes each other better, evolves together, and is part of a team that continues to set goals that can be accomplished together. “Once we were married, I had Ricardo’s full support on going back to school to complete my degree,” says Casandra Osorio who has been married for 11 years.

[

27 Years of Marriage Jose y Rosie Mendoza

A Balancing Act There are many characteristics, keys, or ingredients that can lead to a long lasting relationship we may not have room to share. A successful couple regularly lets each other know that they are valued during the daily grinds of life. Whether you are dating or in a committed relationship, it all may require a balance of good and hardship. With honesty, openness, and a desire to grow, you can better your possibility of having a partner and long lasting love. Caminos wishes all couples a happy Valentine’s Day and to the ones still searching may you celebrate a day of love with family and friends.

HEALTH

How is diabetes screened? A simple fasting blood glucose test can determine if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes. How can you lower your risk for diabetes? Stay at a healthy weight by eating nutritiously and exercising. If you are overweight, weight loss may improve your blood glucose. Eat smaller portions of food for meals. Especially cut down on tortillas, bread, white rice, fruit juices, soda, sweets and desserts. Eat more vegetables. Choose fish and poultry over beef. Bake or grill instead of frying food. Be more physically active. Exercise lowers glucose levels, blood pressure, weight and cholesterol. Start with 15 to 30 minutes of exercise every day. Slowly work up to 60 minutes every day. You can break up your exercise activities throughout the day. Play a sport or go to the gym. Walk around the neighborhood, use the stairs instead of the elevator, park the car farther away, clean the house, or do garden work. For a diabetes screening, make an appointment with your primary care doctor. Cartas de la Universidad / College Letters Interview with

Written by Tito Onesto, Student at the University of Oregon

continued from page 4...

Maria “Lupita” Vargas

Any words of wisdom you want to communicate to any students considering going to college after graduating? DO IT! College is a place where you learn so much about yourself and became a more knowledgeable individual. Plus in college you take classes you are truly interested in, and therefore the workload is more pleasant! Also, do not limit yourself to only in state schools, be adventurous do not be afraid to apply to college away from home. It was a pleasure to interview Lupita Vargas this month and I wish her nothing but the best during her time at Bates and as well as in her career. I’m glad that Caminos had broadened it’s audience and is now reaching out to the English reading community. I hope you enjoy reading the rest of this month’s magazine. Make sure to pick up next month’s issue and continue supporting us. Until next time!

Why did you choose Bates College?

Tito Onesto

I chose to come to Bates College because the school is small; the professor per student ratio is ideal. Bates College is also a Private Liberal Arts School that encourages students to take courses outside their majors. This has allowed me the freedom to explore different disciplines and I feel as if I am being prepared to become a well-rounded individual. In addition my financial aid package was hard to decline. What obstacles did you face at Bates and how did you conquer them? The main obstacle I faced at Bates was learning to adapt to the winter. Living in Oregon all my life did not prepare me for the cold hard winters in Maine. After a few snowstorms I learned to embrace my new winter reality and learn to enjoy the snow. Also wearing multiple layers from head to toe makes the winters less brutal. Do you think it’s harder to pursue a higher education as a Latina? Speaking as a first generation Latina attending college, I do think pursuing a higher education is more difficult for us. I was fortunate enough to have a great support system from my family, school, and community. As a Latina I found each of those support systems crucial components. If either support system were lacking, it would be extremely overwhelming for Latinas to pursue a higher education. What is the thing you miss most being in Maine? The thing I miss the most is my mother’s cooking. There is nothing that can compare to my mom’s homemade Mexican dishes.

Graphic Novels

Hi, this is Felishia Jenkins, your librarian at Jackson County Library Services. This month I want to talk to you about Graphic Novels. Do you read them? Ever heard of them? Graphic novels is the phrase used for books that tell a story using pictures and words. A picture book for grown-ups. When I was first introduced to graphic novels, I did not think I would come to love them as much as I have. I also didn’t anticipate that something that could resemble a comic strip could be so moving and could be used so effectively to portray real life events. Your library has a great selection of graphic novels, in English and Spanish, and if you think of any titles your library should have—well then, let us know! I want to share one of the first graphic novels I ever read, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. This is an autobiographical account of growing up in Iran in the seventies and eighties. Through the eyes of a funny and mischievous young girl, the reader learns about the beauty and customs of Persian culture. The reader also grasps the anguish and horror suffered by the Iranian people during and after the Iran revolution. Persepolis was adapted into an Oscar-nominated animated film in 2007. The graphic novel is available in English and Spanish, and the film is available in DVD at the library. Let me know what you think and share any thoughts or suggestions with me at fjenkins@jcls.org.
