Provincia neurálgica del Noroeste argentino, Salta se compone por una inmensa gama de paisajes y climas que van desde los valles fértiles a la Puna árida. Como la oportunidad de testear esa variedad, el Tren a las Nubes estará de regreso a partir de marzo próximo: una experiencia sobre rieles a gran altura, única en el país, que cubre una extensión de 217 km, con 21 estaciones que conectan a la ciudad de Salta (ubicada a 1187 msnm), escalando a 2000 en las Ruinas de Tastil hasta San Antonio de los Cobres, a 3775 msnm. Finalmente, el ascenso prevé el mayor asombro en el Viaducto La Polvorilla, una obra de ingeniería curvada que le permite al tren tocar el cielo puneño a 4200 msnm.

THE COMPASS

Salta is one of the most active provinces in Argentina´s Northwest and has a wide variety of landscapes such as the fertile valleys or arid Punas. The weather also changes accordingly from place to place. A good opportunity to see part of this province is to take the Train to the clouds, that will reopen next March. This unique train has 217 km long track, and 21 stops. It departs from Salta at 1187 meters above the sea level, and some of the other stops are: Ruinas de Tastil (at 2000 m) and San Antonio de los Cobres (at 2775 m). Last but not least, one of the highlights of the trip: La Polvorilla, a curved viaduct, a work of engineering at 4200 meters above the sea level, which surprises the 500 passengers who can almost touch the clouds.

El día se despertó gris en Salta. Pero los rostros locales demuestran lo contrario y hacen sentir que la llovizna fría es una bendición. No resulta curioso en una provincia donde la fe se siente al paso y donde el reencuentro con su Tren a las Nubes supera cualquier inclemencia. Datado como una experiencia mágica para los turistas del mundo, el Tren es, a la vez, una conexión, razón de ser primaria de su esqueleto que zigzaguea por las alturas salteñas. Y así se lo siente y se lo vive, en las primeras estaciones que va sorteando, donde los pobladores celebran su regreso con banderas, sombreros y ponchos en alto. Del más chico al más grande, salen a las puertas, esperan el andar rasante con sus vehículos estacionados ante los pasos a nivel y hasta en las canchitas de fútbol deciden parar el partido para agitar la mano y vivar al gigante de 10 coches que está de vuelta en los caminos, comunicando a ese mundo de espectadores privilegiados con la realidad de los pueblitos chicos. La gente es el alma que completa la vida renovada de este tren, tan aventurero como cómodo, con ventanillas que se vuelven cuadros en movimiento, que regalan la magnificencia del lecho del Río Toro, de las cornisas de pedregullo y cardones, de los atardeceres naranjas. Ilimitadamente bello, el recorrido es, en esta ocasión, sólo una muestra de un par de kilómetros pero alcanza para entusiasmarse, esperar que el calendario avance pronto hacia marzo y permita llegar hasta la imagen más icónica del recorrido en La Polvorilla para darle a la experiencia muchas más horas que vivir sobre rieles.

It is a grey dawn in Salta. But local faces are bright and make you feel the cold drizzle is a blessing. It is not surprising in a province where faith is in the air and the very emotional reunion with its Train to the Clouds outweighs the harshness of the weather. Presented as a magical experience for tourists from all over the world, the Train is a connection, and at the same time, the primary reason for the existence of tracks zigzagging over the Salta heights. That is how the people in the first stations, coming out to celebrate its return with flags, and sombreros, and ponchos, feel and experience it. Young and old alike, they come to the door, standing under the galleries or in the patios, waiting in their vehicles parked by the tracks and they even stop playing in the soccer fields to wave and shout at the giant with its 10 coaches that is back on the roads, connecting the world of privileged spectators with the reality of the small towns that are the essence of the provinces. The people are the soul that completes the story and the renewed life of this train, as adventurous as it is comfortable, with windows that are traveling paintings, framing the landscape at just the right size for the captivated eye, presenting on both sides the magnificence of the Toro River, the ledges covered with pebbles and cardones (cactus), and with orange and lead sunsets over the mountains. Limitlessly beautiful, the ride on this occasion is only a little over a mile but it is enough to get excited and wait impatiently for the calendar to advance to March and the most iconic image of the ride to La Polvorilla, and many more hours of experience on the tracks.

AN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE.– Como en un juego que no discrimina edades, las galletitas de la hora del té (o en versión argentina, la hora del mate que siempre acompaña este tipo de excursiones) serán invertidas en la conquista de gaviotas y albatros de buen porte que sobrevuelan el catamarán poco después de dejar Puerto Pañuelo, cuando se ingresa en el brazo Blest del lago Nahuel Huapi, ubicado a sólo unos 30 minutos de la ciudad de San Carlos de Bariloche. La serenidad de las aguas debajo de la embarcación, el sol plácido y el alimento visible y a mano suman al placer de la experiencia de viajeros y aves. Los primeros sostienen extendida la comida y dejan que las gaviotas se la arrebaten con picardía, en un ejercicio que resulta impecable para la foto en secuencia. Cuando uno de los pasajeros obtiene el éxito, todos comienzan a imitarlo y así, entre fotos, aves y asombro, el recorrido de una hora de navegación transcurre en forma veloz y por demás entretenida. Por el camino hacia Puerto Blest, a sólo 3 kilómetros de la frontera con el vecino país de Chile, se observa la Isla Centinela, lugar donde todos los catamaranes pitan para saludar con respeto los

restos del Perito Francisco P. Moreno, expedicionario de la Patagonia, amante de sus hielos y sus lagos y creador de los Parques Nacionales, que allí descansan en un sitio de privilegio. Luego, los cerros Capilla y Millaqueo insisten con sus verdes para robar protagonismo al azul de las aguas, y la costa de Bariloche, al mirar hacia atrás, se vuelve una línea apenas interrumpida por los techos anaranjados de las casonas enormes con muelle y embarcaciones amarradas. La bandera celeste y blanca ondea orgullosa en el catamarán y el viento alborota la cubierta al llegar a Puerto Cántaros, el punto donde se desciende por la escalerita, se pone pie en tierra firme y se encara la caminata por los más de 700 escalones que la selva valdiviana exigió trazar sobre su escarpada geografía. De sorpresas y belleza, a pura humedad, está hecho este recorrido: aquí los alerces, las cañas colihue y los cipreses, horondos personajes arbóreos de la Patagonia, aparecen curiosamente abrazados por lianas, enredaderas y un suelo renegrido, cubierto de hongos, hierbas y musgos típicos de la composición selvática. Esta atmósfera encontró aquí su lugar de desarrollo, dado que está alimentada por un régimen de precipitaciones récord para la Argentina que roza

The Valdivian forest appears in the midst of mountain geography: turquoise waters, wild flowers and a place to walk along the shore at Port Blest

AN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE.- As in a game for all ages, the cookies that would otherwise be eaten at teatime (or mate-time, since it is Argentina) will be invested in conquering the gulls and goodsized albatross flying over the catamaran when, leaving Port Pañuelo behind, you take the Blest branch of Lake Nahuel Huapi. The serene waters under the boat, the placid sun and the food on hand add to the pleasure of the experience for travelers and birds. The passengers hold up the food and let the gulls come swooping down to take it off their hands, in an impeccable exercise for sequence photography. When one traveler succeeds in doing it, everybody imitates him and so, with photos, birds and wonder, the hour-long trip goes by in a flash. On the way to Port Blest, only 3 km from the border with neighboring Chile, lies Centinela island, a place where the catamaran blow their whistle to salute the remains of Francisco P. Moreno, an expeditionary to Patagonia, who loved its glaciers and lakes and founder of National Parks. Then mounts Capilla and Millaqueo insist with their different tones of green, robbing the blue waters of their protagonism, and the shore of Bariloche, looking back, is just a line only interrupted by the orange roofs of the big houses. The flag flies proudly in the wind that crosses the deck of the catamaran when reaching Port Cántaros, where we leave the boat to take on the more than 700 steps built over the Valdivian forest.

El mini-trekking por este paisaje cerrado depara el encuentro de pequeños hongos de colores, flores silvestres y troncos caídos para descansar un rato y respirar profundo la pureza del aire local. Luego, se abre hacia el Lago Los Cántaros, con pequeñas pérgolas y muellecitos de madera para sentarse a admirar el reflejo de los cerros nevados sobre su superficie inmutable, y más abajo, la Cascada de los Cántaros que cae con fuerza y cristalinidad, también para la foto. Hay quienes eligen, después de verla, regresar en la embarcación hasta la costa de enfrente, la de Blest propiamente dicha, para saciar el apetito de la hora del almuerzo. Pero son muchos los que optan por seguir andando por unos 40 minutos más y encontrarse con espacios de quietud del bosque donde el rocío resplandece inerte bajo los rayos del sol hasta desembocar en la orilla de arena volcánica y piedras ovales para andar junto al lago hasta la hostería-restaurant de Blest. Tras la comida, el paseo de sobremesa se impone a la vera del río Frías, de un increíble color verde esmeralda con sesgos lechosos que a pocos metros se inmiscuye en el lago para hacer de la paleta una experiencia en sí misma.

This tour is full of surprises and humid beauty: here the fitzroya and other trees of the cypress family, and the Chusquea culeou (Spanish: caña coligüe or colihue cane), appear embraced by vines and creepers and standing on a black soil, covered with mushrooms, herbs, and moss, typical of the forest. The area has 3000 millimeters of rain a year, the highest precipitation in Argentina. The mini-trekking over this closed landscape takes you to Lake Los Cántaros, with small pergolas and wooden docks where you can sit and admire the reflection of the mountains covered in snow on its immutable surface, and lower down, the Cascade of los Cántaros falling in all its crystalline strength, also a good photo-op. Some choose then to take the boat to the opposite coast, Blest proper, for lunch. Others decide to keep on walking for another 40 minutes, through other quiet spots of the forest, where the dew shines under the sun, until they come to a beach of volcanic sand and oval stones, and from there to the Blest hostel and restaurant. After the meal, a walk along the banks of the Frias river is a must, with its emerald waters, flowing only a few meters down into the lake where the palette is an incredible experience all by itself.

PUERTO DESEADO: RETAZOS DE HISTORIA COSTERA

UERTO DESEADO.– Bajo la mirada atenta de los gaviotines que merodean las costas de la Ría Deseado, las caminatas por el pueblo desembocan en dos íconos de su historia. Se trata de dos museos: el Regional Provincial Mario Brozoski, amplia recolección de los objetos hallados en la corbeta inglesa Swift que naufragó ante las costas deseadenses en 1770; y el museo ferroviario, hecho de recuerdos de los hombres que trabajaron en esta estación. En el Brozoski, todo ha salido del fondo del agua y su nombre honra al buzo que halló los restos de la corbeta hace unos 25 años, 200 después de que se hundiera, tras chocar con una roca en plena ría. No fue sino uno de los tripulantes el que contó la historia de generación en generación hasta que en 1975, Patrick Gower trajo la incógnita hasta Deseado para

nder the attentive stare of the terns marauding over the shores of the Ría (drowned river valley) of Deseado, walks through the town take you to two icons of history. They are two museums: the Provincial Regional Mario Brozoski, with an ample collection of objects found in the British corvette Swift, sunk near the coast of Deseado in 1770; and the railroad museum, full of mementos of the men that worked at the station. In the Brozoski museum, everything comes from under water and the name of the place is in honor of the diver that found the wreck, a quarter of a century ago, 200 years after it sunk, after hitting a rock in the middle of the ría. One of the survivors told the story and, in 1975 Patrick Gower brought the story here again. In 1980 a group of teenagers

Junto al tren La estación de estilo inglés, zinguerías rojas y ladrillos fuertes puestos uno sobre el otro por un grupo de picapedreros yugoeslavos en 1911, no ha perdido un céntimo de su poderío visual. Fue tomada (en el mejor sentido de la palabra) por un grupo de pobladores que participaron de los tiempos hegemónicos del ferrocarril, jubilados, que vivieron la etapa de sueños, cuando el trazado de las vías prometía colocar a Deseado como cabecera. Todo esto lo cuentan con lujo de detalles los coleccionistas de este museo, casero pero intensamente emotivo, plagado de objetos que van desde maquetas de estaciones a farolas, de relojes a escritorios, y de zorras a locomotoras en miniatura.

By the train The English style station, with red zinc roofs and strong bricks, one on top of the other, put there by a group of Yugoslav masons around 1911, has not lost an atom of its visual potency. Standing near the water, in the heart of the town, it was occupied (in the best sense of the word) by a group of residents when the railroad dominated the scene. In their old age they lived a dream, when the company promised to make Deseado the main station. The collectors of the museum tell all this in great detail. It is a home-made affair, true, but intensely emotional, full of objects, including from scale model stations to lanterns, from watches to desks, from buggies to miniature locomotives.

It is as if time had not gone by for these objects, more than a hundred of them, in excellent condition. In impeccable showcases you can see old gin bottles, green and brown, that enlivened the sailors parties; all kinds of clothes, innumerable porcelain vessels, cups and dishes of the most refined English taste, compared to the rusticity of the sturdy and durable cups and plates of the sailors.

URMAMARCA.– Salir del circuito tradicional de las ferias de la Quebrada de Humahuaca, en Jujuy, deviene en una experiencia enriquecedora. Y en tentación de compra, por supuesto. Es que muchos artesanos han decidido abrir sus patios traseros o sus pequeños talleres hogareños al paso de los turistas, un modo de narrar en vivo una herencia que les legaron las etnografías predecesoras. En algunos casos, el sincretismo logra aunar las técnicas antiguas y los diseños precolombinos con señas más contemporáneas o de corrientes hispánicas. En otros, está más arraigado aún lo que vino bajando por el

URMAMARCA.– Going to the nontraditional crafts circuit in Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy, is an enriching and tempting experience. Many artisans have decided to show from their houses or small home workshops the way they work with techniques inherited by their ethnographic ancestors. Sometimes, some artisans are able to mix ancient techniques and pre-Columbian designs with modern and even with Spanish ones. Others made their crafts in the same way they learned it from their predecessors from the high lands of Quebrada. In Purmamarca, two blocks away from the square,

altiplano hasta la Quebrada de generación en generación. En Purmamarca, a dos cuadras de la plaza, una joven de veintitantos teje en telar según las viejas técnicas del barracán, un tejido típico del noroeste de técnicas precolombinas y factura impecable sobre lanas de oveja hiladas a mano, sin agregados sintéticos ni tinturas, combinado en negro y blanco y casi siempre con dibujos geométricos. Ruanas, frazadas, mantas, pantalones y sacos forman parte del repertorio de piezas que representan este estilo típico de la Puna jujeña. Aquí, en La Pushka –nombre quechua que homenajea en este comercio casero al huso de madera que se utiliza para hilar la lana– se puede ver el proceso del vellón enredado a las bufandas y triángulos abrigados y bellísimos. Por su parte, unos pueblitos más arriba en el nivel del mar, en Uquía, hay un comercio siempre abierto sobre la esquina izquierda de la iglesia. Allí se hace honor a la tradición alfarera. El patio de atrás es un convite para observar cómo se macera la arcilla en baldes, se la deja estacionar y ablandarse al punto de quedar sin grumos, se da forma a la pieza en los tornos y se las cuece en hornos de barro a más de 1000 grados de temperatura. Luego de que la pieza está constituida con forma y razón de ser –surgen del horno ollitas, azucareras, réplicas de capillas, vasijas y pesebres, entre innumerables objetos– se las pinta con prolijidad y paciencia, siempre con tonalidades naturales que hacen gala del paisaje traducido en los diseños.

Here in “La Pushka”, a typical store and home, named after the quechua word for the wood spindle which is use to work the fleece and wool. One can actually see this handwork in the beautiful and warm scarves and shawls. High above the sea level, in the town called Uquía, there is a store near the church where the art pottery is still alive. The backyard invites to watch how the clay is softened in bowls filled of water, until it reaches a point where it has no lumps. Then, the piece is shaped and cooked in ovens with a temperature over 1000 ºC. After that, when the pieces have its form and purpose, they are painted with natural colors which reflect the surrounding landscape and its translation into designs. Some of the objects are: pots, sugar bowls, vases, small replicas of churches, mangers and other souvenirs.

El Tren a las Nubes acaba de ponerse en marcha nuevamente, después de dos años de inactividad. La gente sale a su paso con banderas, sombreros, inmensa alegría. Vivan su regreso por los cerros empinados, a centímetros del borde del camino, en una sensación magnífica para los que experimentan desde sus asientos una visión diferente del pai-

saje: la de verlo recortado tras una ventanilla. La magia del Tren, aseguran, vive tanto dentro de sus diez coches de pasajeros como detrás de ellas, en la panorámica continua que el movimiento proyecta en los ojos de los viajeros que encaran esta epopéyica ruta desde los 1200 msnm, en la ciudad de Salta, hasta los 4200, cuando el ícono norteño toca las nubes sobre el Viaducto La Polvorilla, una de las imágenes más replicadas en el mundo del turismo argentino. ALTA-. The movement of the train is smooth and easy, the same way the people of the Puna move. But it is also safe, consistent. The Train to the Clouds is back, after two years of inactivity. People come out to wave flags, sombreros, with immense joy, as it passes. They welcome it back to the steep mountains, only centimeters from the road, with a great sensation for those receiving a different vision of the landscape

from their seats, framed in the car windows. They say the magic of the train is both inside the ten passenger cars and outside them, in the continuous panoramic view projected by the movement in the eyes of the travelers, aboard this epic trip from the 1200 meters above sea level in the city of Salta, to the 4200 meters, when this icon of the Argentine North reaches the clouds over the viaduct at La Polvorilla, one of the most replicated images of Argentine

tourism in the world. It is a viaduct 64 meters high, a metal and cement arch, the most classical postcard of the tour. el genio creador del Ramal C14. Luego, el tren se entromete en la inmensidad de la Quebrada del Río Toro, pedregosa, sólo custodiada por los cardones, que se atraviesa sobre viaductos metálicos. Más adelante, después de los dos primeros rulos que las vías describen para que el Tren sin cremalleras pueda ganar altura, llegará la oportunidad de visualizar el pasado arqueológico de Tastil y sus Ruinas, para finalmente, tras unas 7 horas de viaje, alcanzar la vida en la Puna, donde se agolpan los pobladores de San Antonio de los Cobres ofreciendo sus artesanías y tejidos en telar a viva voz. Una hora para estirar las piernas y luego, es tiempo de seguir viaje. Con la locomotora enganchada por detrás para empujar los coches, el Tren llega a su punto mítico sobre el viaducto, el sitio exacto en el que recibió su bautismo. Cuenta la historia que, en los ‘60, dos camarógrafos tucumanos filmaron un documental sobre el Tren y para redondear pictóricamente una escena, le solicitaron al maquinista que, al llegar a la Polvorilla, la locomotora soltara una nube de vapor, la que, por lógica, se plasmó sobre el cielo celeste como un recorte. Lo que no estaba previsto es que la altura y la baja temperatura de la zona contribuirían a que esa nube permaneciera por bastante tiempo inerte, junto al Tren, cargando la escena de magia. Cuando llegó la etapa de edición, el encargado fue un periodista de Buenos Aires, Emilio Petcoff, quien tituló su guión “Tren a las Nubes” debido a aquellos copos blancos que tiñeron por varios minutos el impecable cielo de la Puna.

Un camino imponente La lógica, abordo, se deja a un lado. Es que la sensación imponente del paisaje que obliga a mirar a uno y otro lado desde los asientos o desde el salón comedor (donde se pueden probar delicias gourmet con acento regional, a cargo de los chefs de Cocina de altura) impide analizar cómo este Ramal C14 llegó a concretarse en una geografía tan compleja. La obra de ingeniería comenzó en 1921, por un pedido del entonces presidente argentino Hipólito Irigoyen. El depositario del desafío fue el ingeniero norteamericano Richard Maury quien, interrupciones mediante, creó un ramal para el futuro: diseñó rieles que soportaran locomotoras más pesadas y de mayor potencia, como las que suponía que llegarían al mercado décadas después; creó curvas de amplios radios para que los vagones más largos no se descarrillaran, y evitó el uso del sistema de cremalleras que habitualmente se utiliza para que los ferrocarriles trepen en altura.

Then the train inserts itself into the immensity of the stony Toro River Gulch, with its bodyguard of cardones (Euphorbia Canariensis, a cactuslike plant with red flowers) the train crosses riding on imposing metal viaducts. Further on, after two loops –that allow the train to climb the rails without racks-, comes the opportunity to visualize the archeological past of Tastil and its Ruins. After 7 hours the train comes to the Puna, where the residents of San Antonio de los Cobres offer their artisan wares and hand-loom cloth. An hour to stretch your legs and then it’s time to continue on the trip. With the locomotive pushing from behind, the train comes to its

identity, renewed with the restoration of its cars, diner and inﬁrmary, the Train salutes local residents blowing its horn at each station

mythical point above the viaduct, where it received its name. As the story goes, decades after its first tour up the tracks, in July 1972, two cameramen from Tucumán were filming a documentary of the train. When they reached La Polvorilla they asked the engineer to send up a cloud of vapor from the locomotive. They didn’t anticipate that, with the height and low temperature, the cloud would remain quite a while there, by the train, creating a magical scene. When, back in Buenos Aires, in the editing process, the journalist in charge of the script, Emilio Petcoff, saw that scene with the cloud by the train in the Puna sky, he came up with the title: Train to the Clouds.

An imposing road Onboard, logic is left behind. The impressive landscape compels you to look to both sides, from your seat or the dining-car (where you can taste gourmet delicacies with a regional accent, presented by the chefs of the train’s mountain cuisine). It is hard to understand how this C14 branch could have been built in such a complex geography. Construction started in 1921, by request of then Argentine president Hipólito Irigoyen. American engineer Richard Maury took up the challenge and built, with some interruptions, a railroad branch for the future: he designed tracks that could support heavier and more potent locomotives, which he supposed would be built decades later, and avoided the use of

Veintinueve puentes, veintiún túneles y trece viaductos terminan de componer el camino, que fue renovado en los últimos meses con 51 mil metros de nuevos rieles. Durante la temporada de ballenas (la gigante franca austral, de junio a diciembre, nadando junto a sus crías o apareándose en las costas de Chubut), no hace falta embarcarse para verlas al alcance de la mano. Como escenario natural y privilegiado se propone El Doradillo, una playa sobre las márgenes del Golfo Nuevo, a sólo 15 km de la ciudad de Puerto Madryn, con suelo de canto rodado y sol generoso, óptimo para acariciar las tardes de lugareños y turistas que eligen este punto para visualizar la fauna pero también para hacer su picnic, ver volar las gaviotas al ras del agua, realizar caminatas o mountain bike y fotografiar el arco que la geografía describe en estos 25 km de playa. They are so close to the beach that you won’t need to get into a boat. “El Doradillo” is a natural and privileged stony beach in Golfo Nuevo, only 15 km away from the city of Puerto Madryn. A perfect sunny place where locals and tourists go to have a picnic, watch nature, for example the flight of seagulls, walk, cycling, or taking photographs in the 25 km beach. This is a protected area for the contact with animals, so rangers help to understand and keep safe the environment. AN JAVIER.– Hay que ver el verde, sentir la humedad de la nuboselva e internarse entre las rocas enormes para llegar a la brisa mojada que la cascada del Río Noque, en la antesala del valle de La Sala, desprende sobre los caminantes para comprender la dimensión de esta tierra inmensamente fértil que depara Tucumán, sobre los 1270 metros de San Javier, a apenas una media hora de viaje de la capital San Miguel. El aire es fresquísimo; el agua, aún más. Cristalina al extremo, convida con sombra abundante en torno a la fuente natural para avivar la charla, el picnic o la contemplación más pura, después de atravesar senderitos de selva salpicados de aves, lianas y animalitos escurridizos. AN JAVIER.– Visitors going to San Javier, just half hour away from the capital city: San Miguel, will be able to feel the humidity of the “nuboselva” (the argentine biome of that region). After crossing a rocky path you will reach Río Noque Fall which is in the vast and fertile “La Sala Valley”, at 1270 meters above the sea level just the same as San Javier. The air and the water are fresh. This natural cascade with crystal clear water is a great place for doing picnics, meditation or relaxing among jungle trees, lianas, birds and some small animals. Another part of the eclectic San Javier is Loma Bola, a barren hill with no trees but with enough wind to do paragliding, which will allow you to fly in the blue sky over the city and the orange and lemon trees plantations. In here, many international competitions are held, one can go to admire the courage of the brave or be one of them. Between the barren hill and the “nuboselva”, lies the city of San Javier with some houses and manors, a hotel-restaurant and some artisans by the side of the route. There is also the figure of Jesus Christ, a 28 meters long statue which weighs 135.800 kilograms made by the Tucumán sculptor: Juan Carlos Iramain, who is justly buried under it. despojada, desnuda de árboles y con vientos a favor de los parapentes, pista óptima para tomar carrera rumbo a los cielos celestes que sobrevuelan la urbe y los campos de naranja y limón. Este sitio, donde se organizan campeonatos internacionales del deporte, lleva por nombre Loma Bola y puede uno pasarse el día bajo el sol para admirar a los valientes, o bien, seguirles el paso en vuelos de bautismo. El punto intermedio entre la lomada y la nuboselva es el propio corazón urbano de San Javier, con unas poquitas casas y quintas, un hotel-restaurante, algunos puestos de artesanos que bordean la ruta, unos rebaños intrépidos que se cruzan por ella y una figura inmensa que bendice la naturaleza intacta de la región. Se trata de un Cristo Redentor de 28 metros de altura y 135.800 kilos de peso, con su mano en alto y la firma del escultor tucumano Juan Carlos Iramain, cuyos restos descansan, con justicia, debajo del monumento. Tan gigante como imponente, desde ese punto, el más alto de la zona, riega de fe las curvas que trasladan hasta esta visual de privilegio. Para llegar aquí, los caminos se desdoblan en dos (lo ideal es trepar por un lado y bajar por otro, así nadie se pierde la oportunidad de ver las bellezas vecinas): se puede llegar por el ingenio azucarero de San Pablo para luego encarar las más de 50 curvas del camino hacia Villa Nougués y sus casonas aristocráticas rodeadas de jardines en flor, realmente dignas de conocer; o bien, tomar desde San Miguel de Tucumán la avenida Mate de Luna, almorzar en la zona comercial y de entretenimiento que propone Yerba Buena y de allí en más, enfrentar la sinuosidad enmarcada por pircas de otro camino verde y panorámico hasta alcanzar los íconos paisajísticos de San Javier.

Eso dicen los que han alcanzado los más de seismil metros de altura de este conjunto, imponente por cierto, de 9 gigantes entre los que se cuenta el récord del Pissis, el volcán inactivo más alto del mundo con 6682 metros; Ojos del Salado, Walter Penck, Incahuasi, Tres Cruces y San Francisco son otros de los escenarios de lagunas heladas y ecosistema de Puna donde sólo se animan a habitar manadas furtivas de guanacos y vicuñas, más grupos pictóricos de flamencos rosados en equilibrio sobre las aguas. Sitios sagrados para las culturas prehispánicas, dado que en esta región se llevaba a cabo el culto a los Apus, considerados seres capaces de influir sobre la vida de los hombres, los Andes expresan aquí su imponente silueta, en contrapunto con las dunas que muy cerca exhibe Fiambalá o los verdes que despliegan su tapiz en los valles. Los Seismiles son el punto de aventura y llegar a ellos implica tomar la Ruta Nº 60, aunque también habrá que saber de alpinismo e ir acompañado de un guía de montaña. Museos y plateros Al cruzar el puente viejo, el Museo Ricardo Güiraldes, en honor a uno de los mejores escritores y descriptores de la vida gaucha, resguarda la antigua pulpería y los objetos más preciados del artista. Mientras tanto, frente a la plaza central, es el orfebre Juan José Draghi el que hizo de la artesanía un sitio de contemplación. Desde los sesenta, este artista trabaja la plata según los diseños que en tiempos de la colonia, los gauchos traducían para sus aperos, sus espuelas y facones, y las familias de alcurnia, colocaban en sus mesas con mates y bandejas labradas. Hoy sus hijos siguen con su arte y muchos otros artesanos hacen lo propio en talleres a la vista de los visitantes. Tal es el caso de Facundo Robledo, que en la mañana de sábado pule una rastra que será pieza de exhibición con delicadeza. Cuenta que a menudo tiene que armar sus propios punzones o herramientas dependiendo de los dibujos puntuales, que ama esta técnica a pesar de no haberla heredado y que la creatividad, en este trabajo, es ilimitada. Los secretos del orfebre están al alcance de la mano y puede pasarse uno largo rato, embelezado, intentando descubrirlos.

His most prized personal objects are there. Across from the main plaza we find Juan José Draghi, who turned his craft into a reason for contemplation. Since the 1960’s this artist works silver, following designs from colonial times the gauchos used to adorn their leather apparel, spurs and knives, and rich families had in their mate gourds and carved trays. His sons continue his art and his tradition and

other craftsmen do the same in their workshops, open to the public. Facundo Robledo is one of them. On a Saturday morning he delicately polishes a rastra that will be an exhibition peace. He tells us that he often has to make his own tools to be able to produce certain designs. He loves this technique of limitless creative possibilities. The secrets of the craft are there to see and you can spend long hours contemplating them.

a geografía de Cafayate, al sur de Salta, se nutre de los colores terrosos, rojizos y hasta violáceos de su conjunción de cielo y cerros. Así mismo, entre los viñedos más altos del país, los terroir de la bodega Etchart donaron todo ese colorido a sus nuevos vinos, bautizados con justicia con el nombre de su progenitor, Cafayate. Queda claro que la intensidad de los aromas, tonos y sabores respeta a su tierra y que, bajo esa premisa, el enólogo Víctor Marcantoni eligió las uvas precisas para los cuatro varietales que vieron la luz en restaurantes y vinerías hace poco más de un mes: malbec, cabernet sauvignon, torrontés y cosecha tardía. Asegura el experto que “las uvas poseen una gran expresión, así como también serenidad, nobleza y una identidad bien definida por la altura de los terroirs, el suelo arenoso a 1750 msnm, la amplitud térmica, dando como resultado viñedos que desafían al desierto y el sol, nutriéndose de ellos”. Exportados a más de 80 países, los vinos que llevan al paisaje en sus etiquetas plasmadas sobre un original al óleo, harán descubrir a este paraíso salteño en los paladares. he geography of Cafayate, in Southern Salta, is bathed in the colors of the earth, the reds and even the violets of the sky and the mountains. The terroirs of the Etchart winery, some of the highest vineyards in the country, gave these colors to their new wines, justly named after their progenitor, Cafayate. The intensity of the aromas, colors and tastes come from the earth and with that premise, enologist Victor Marcantoni chose the precise grapes for the four varietals that appeared in restaurants and wine-stores a month ago: malbec,

cabernet sauvignon, torrontés and late-harvest. The expert insists the “grapes have great expressiveness, along with serenity and nobility, and a well defined personality, due to the height of the terroirs, the sandy soil at 1750 meters above sea level, the small temperature variation, and scarce rain, resulting in grapevines that defy the desert and the permanent sun, feeding from them”. Exported to more than 80 countries, the wines carry the landscape in their labels, with a reproduction of an original oil-painting, taking this Salta paradise to palates all over the world.

The taste of Cafayate is explicitly present in the ruby red of the cabernet, with its intense aroma and its tones of green pepper, mixed with red fruits, coconut, licorice, and cassis. Potent, with body, and a strong after taste, it comes from a grapevine two decades old, and it goes perfectly with lamb stew and meat and potato empanada, two classics of these northern latitudes. The malbec is of an intense vermillion with violet sparks, an aroma of stewed red fruits (strawberry, plum and raisin), fused with earthy tones, leather and spices. Wine-taster’s notes define it as amiable, serene, with good body, soft tannins, which can result in the best company for watching sunsets in any part of the country. The central role at these heights is reserved as usual for the torrontés, the main Salta strain: this Cafayate

by Etchart moves palates softly, filling noses with the intensity of flowers and fruits, and accompanies goat cheese canapés with its crystalline and gold lights. Finally, desert could come with this late-harvest, elegantly sweet, with tones of nectar, honey and caramel, made in the image of the sunny valleys where the grapes grow. You can easily take a guided tour of the winery, founded at the foot of the Andes in 1850, owned today by the French company Pernod Ricard, which invites you to a sensuous trip, embraced by the mountains. The vines belonging to this winery, climb up the slopes and absorb the light of day, in a natural palette translating its best expression in the grapes.

Por su parte, el malbec ha sido dotado de un tono carmín intenso con destellos violetas, desprende aroma a frutos rojos cocidos (fresas, ciruelas y uvas pasas), fusionado con notas terrosas, cuero y especias. Las notas de cata lo definen amable y sereno, de buen cuerpo, con taninos suaves que pueden añadir el mejor condimento a los atardeceres en cualquier punto del país. El rol protagónico de estas alturas se lo lleva, como es habitual, el torrontés, la cepa insignia de Salta: este Cafayate de Etchart conmueve suavemente el paladar, suma la intensidad de flores y frutos en naríz y riega, cristalino y chispeante de reflejos dorados, las tablas de quesos de cabra. Finalmente, el postre podría llegar acompañado de esta cosecha tardía, elegantemente dulce, que despliega notas de néctar, miel y caramelo, dulcísimo y equilibrado, a imagen y semejanza de los valles plenos de sol. Verlos crecer de cerca es sencillo: basta con asistir a una de las visitas guiadas que la bodega, fundada al pie de los Andes en 1850 y hoy propiedad del grupo francés Pernod Ricard, ofrece a los viajeros que desean asistir a un viaje de sentidos, abrazado por los cerros que le dan origen. Sus hileras prolijas avanzan hacia el faldeo y absorben todas las luces del día, en una paleta natural que traduce en las uvas la mejor de sus expresiones.
