A different Mexico

The tropical foliage of Tabasco that surrounds the legacy of the Olmec culture and is the cradle of cocoa that allow us to experience a very different Mexico that takes it visitors by surprise when they first visit it. Its capital, Villahermosa, was founded by Hernan Cortes in the mouth of the Grijalva River as the first European city in America in 1519. Today, it preserves the beauty of the past with a vibrant and exotic nature sprinkled by beautiful lakes, parks with stone walkways, royal palm trees and well kept gardens. The western part of the State of Tabasco safeguards a precious legacy where the archeological site La Venta is located. In that place, the Olmecs built a huge ceremonial center that covers several square kilometers, the site was explored by the archaeologist Franz Bloom in 1925 who discovered gigantic carved stones sculptures and other remains that have been essential to size the greatness of the ancient inhabitants and their skills in architecture, mathematics, art, and religion. Along with the divine worship, Tabasco has the Sacred Route of Cocoa as it is known that this is the main ingredient of chocolate and plays a key role in the culture of Mexico. The scientific name of the native tree is Theobroma cacao, which means “Food of the Gods”, and now is possibly to know the process of growing cocoa which becomes a genuine artisan chocolate. It is fascinating to visit cocoa farms and plantations in the middle of the jungle where its aroma fills the air and, of course, to taste this delicious product.

El nombre científico del árbol nativo es theobroma cacao, que significa “alimento de los dioses”, y actualmente es posible conocer el proceso de cultivo del cacao hasta convertirse en un auténtico chocolate artesanal. The State of Yucatán has many sites that were key factors for the Mayan Empire and today tourists can know through the impressive Puuc Route which is a journey through a series of archaeological treasures located in the south of the state where the greatest exponents of the Mayan sculpture left their mark on their fine and complex work on immortal stones. Puuc means “hill” in Mayan, it is called thus because the sites of the area are characterized by an architectural style similar to natural forests and most are located in the middle of the jungle, so the exuberant vegetation and endemic fauna are part of the remarkable trip. The cities that make up such an important route are Kabah that rivaled Uxmal in its peak in terms of the number of inhabitants, size and religious importance; Sayil, called “Place of Ants” that houses the three level Grand Palace with figures of the God Chaac present throughout the area; Xlapak, whose most prominent building is The Palace; Labná, known as Casas Viejas, is very large, many areas have not been explored where El Edificio de las Columnillas stands out; and finally, Uxmal, known as “the three times built”, one of the most important archaeological sites of Mexico and declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO But, how can we get to such mystical place? From Merida, the capital of Yucatan, you should take Highway 18 until you reach the turn off to Mani to arrive at the Grutas of Loltun, the first point of the route. Following the same road towards the South, you arrive into Kabah, Sayil is located only 10 kilometers from Kabah, 5 kilometers later you will see Xlapak and 5 kilometers to the east you will find Labná. Once you have explored these beautiful places through the Puuc Route you arrive at the jewel of the region: Uxmal.

La Ruta Puuc: trabajo sobre piedra que habla desde el pasado Talento, conocimientos y un invaluable legado El Estado de Yucatán contiene muchos sitios que fueron clave para el Imperio Maya y que hoy el turista puede conocer a través de la impresionante Ruta Puuc, que es un recorrido por una serie de tesoros arqueológicos ubicados al sur de la entidad, donde los más grandes exponentes de la escultura maya dejaron plasmado su fino y complejo trabajo sobre inmortales piedras. Puuc en maya significa cerro, recibe este nombre porque los sitios del área se caracterizan por tener un estilo arquitectónico similar a montes naturales y la mayoría están situados en medio de la selva, así que la vegetación exuberante y la fauna endémica forman parte del extraordinario viaje.

Las ciudades que conforman tan importante ruta son Kabah, que durante su apogeo rivalizó con Uxmal en cuanto a número de habitantes, tamaño e importancia religiosa; Sayil, llamada Lugar de Hormigas, que alberga El Gran Palacio de tres niveles con figuras del dios Chaac, presente en toda la zona; Xlapak, cuya edificación más prominente es El Palacio; Labná, conocido como Casas Viejas, es de enormes dimensiones, muchas áreas no hatn sido exploradas y destaca El Edificio de las Columnillas; finalmente está Uxmal: la tres veces construida, una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y denominada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.

Pero, ¿cómo llegar a tan místico lugar? Desde Mérida, la capital yucateca, debe tomarse la carretera 18 hasta llegar a la desviación a Mani, para arribar a la primera escala de la ruta: las Grutas de Loltún. Siguiendo el mismo camino hacia el sur se llega a Kabah, a escasos 10 kilómetros está Sayil, 5 kilómetros después aparece Xlapak y otros 5 kilómetros, pero hacia el este, está Labná. Una vez recorridas esas bellezas de la Ruta Puuc, se llega a la joya de la región: Uxmal.

fter a constant work over the years in favor of the state of Aguascalientes, Carlos Lozano de la Torre became the governor of the entity on December 1, 2010. Today, after the first third of his term, accusations against his counterpart, Luis Armando Reynoso, placed him in the public eye, however, he got off fairly lightly in spite of criticism and attacks. Whether he is natural-born U.S citizen or his political success was because of the political impetus given by Reynoso are allegations he never denied and fully responded allowing the Aguascalentenses to recognize the face of a politician, capable of facing adversities and, above all, ratifying the profile of a man consistent with both his words and his actions Although he was born in the United States, as mentioned above, he was raised in Zacatecas. Carlos Lozano has a graduate degree in Industrial Engineering and Management from the University of Monterrey and has dedicated much of his life to public service in the region he leads now. It is worth mentioning that his political career has been focused on giving back to the community a little of what he has been given by the Mexican land, a land that he adopted as his own. Even though he admitted to feel very hurt by the accusations made against him during his proselytism campaign in 2010, he also took the opportunity to point out that all that was worth it, because from then –during the protocolary campaign in which it was announced Carlos Lozano had obtained majority of the vote and became the Governor of the state- he would start working on positively repositioning Aguascalientes at national level. However, after almost four decades of experience within the public service, it is important to overview how his experience over time led him to become the Secretary for Economic Development in the state of Zacatecas in the periods 1974-1980, 1980-1986 and 1992-1998. During the period 1980 to 1986 under President Rodolfo Gallegos Landeros, and from 1992 to 1998 during the presidency of Otto Granados Roldan. That last year he was called to occupy the same position within the Secretariat of Economic Development in Zacatecas, at the specific request of then president Ricardo Monreal Avila. It was in 2004 when he resigned the position that gave him a certain reputation as a public official, as his party - the Institutional Revolutionary- nominated him as a candidate for Alianza Contigo (PRI-PVEM,PT), which was just a failed attempt to become the Mayor of Aguascalientes. Despite the setback, he was the state leader in 2005, while a year later- in spite of being in second place in the ratings- he served as Senator of the Republic for the state of Aguascalientes, a position he ran during one more term (2006-2012); however, he requested a license as a Senator from January 19, 2010. This day he publicly announced that he intended to compete for the PRI representative for the governorship in the 2012 election. With more than 76 legislative initiatives and 135 proposals submitted throughout his work in the Senate, he served as Chairman of the Housing Commission. He also was a member of Trade and Industrial Development, Finance and Public Credit, Energy, and Special Energy to determine the causes of low financing for development, the large amount of government debt and its instruments. In addition to his active participation as legislator, Carlos Lozano has carried out studies on Development Planning, Industrial Development and New Cities in England as a grantee of the Mexican government. He has been Advisor of Channel 40 and Chief of the newspaper Reforma.

espués de un trabajo constante a través de los años a favor del estado de Aguascalientes, Carlos Lozano de la Torre llegó a la gubernatura de dicha entidad el 1 de diciembre de 2010. Hoy en día, apenas rebasado el primer tercio de su gestión, las acusaciones en contra de su homólogo: Luis Armando Reynoso Femat, lo colocaron en el ojo del huracán, embestida de la que -pese a críticas y ataques- supo salir bien librado. Que si es estadounidense de nacimiento, que si su triunfo político fue gracias al impulso de Reynoso, son imputaciones de las que en ningún momento renegó y -al contrario- supo responder con cabalidad, permitiendo que los aguascalentenses pudieran reconocer en él el rostro de un político capaz de afrontar adversidades y, sobre todo, ratificar el perfil de un hombre coherente tanto en su decir como en su accionar. Como bien se ha mencionado, aunque nació en Estados Unidos, fue criado en Zacatecas, se graduó como Ingeniero Industrial Administrador en la Universidad de Monterrey, y ha dedicado una buena parte de su vida al servicio público en la región que hoy lidera, recorrido por el que está de más explicar por qué su trabajo ha estado enfocado a devolver un poco de lo tanto que le ha dado la tierra mexicana que adoptó como suya. Así, aunque él mismo aceptó sentirse muy dolido por los
señalamientos de los que fue objeto durante su campaña proselitista en 2010, en su momento también aprovechó para apuntar que todo ello había valido la pena, pues a partir de entonces -durante la ceremonia protocolaria en la cual le entregaron su constancia de mayoría como Gobernador electo- comenzaría a hacer una labor para reposicionar de forma positiva a la región hidrocálida a nivel nacional. No obstante, para llegar hasta este punto en el que se encuentra próximo a cumplir cuatro décadas de trayectoria dentro del servicio público, vale la pena hacer un recuento de la experiencia que a través del tiempo lo llevó a escalar posiciones que iniciaron a partir de la titularidad en la Secretaría Desarrollo Económico de Aguascalientes (1974-1980), dependencia en la que fue ratificado durante dos periodos más. El primero de ellos fue de 1980 a 1986 durante el gobierno de Rodolfo Gallegos Landeros, mientras que de 1992 a 1998 lo hizo durante el sexenio de Otto Granados Roldán, aunque en ese último año fue llamado para ocupar el mismo puesto dentro de la Secretario de Desarrollo Económico en Zacatecas, a petición expresa del entonces mandatario Ricardo Monreal Ávila. Fue en el año 2004 que presentó su renuncia al puesto que le confirió un renombre como funcionario, dado que su partido -el Revolucionario Institucional- lo postuló como su abanderado para contender como candidato de la Alianza
Contigo (PRI-PVEM,PT), en lo que no fue más que un fallido intento por la alcaldía de la capital aguascalentense. No obstante el tropiezo, fue dirigente estatal del tricolor en 2005, mientras que un año después -pese a quedar en segundo lugar de las votaciones- se convirtió en Senador de la República por Aguascalientes, cargo que obtuvo por primera minoría durante una legislatura más (2006-2012); empero, solicitó licencia como Senador a partir del 19 de enero de 2010, día en que anunció públicamente su intención de competir por la candidatura priista a la gubernatura en la elección de 2010. Con más de 76 iniciativas de ley y 135 proposiciones con punto de acuerdo presentados a lo largo de su labor dentro del Senado, desempeñó el cargo de Presidente de la Comisión de Vivienda, además de ser integrante de las de Comercio y Fomento Industrial; de Hacienda y Crédito Público; de Energía, y de la Especial, para determinar las causas del bajo financiamiento para el desarrollo y del elevado monto de la deuda pública y sus instrumentos. Aunado a su activa participación en su periodo como legislador, Carlos Lozano ha realizado estudios sobre Planeación del Desarrollo, Desarrollo Industrial y Ciudades Nuevas en Inglaterra, como becario del Gobierno mexicano; igualmente, ha sido Consejero del Canal 40 y Consejero del periódico Reforma.

Pyramid of Kukulcan: one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World
// The impressive Temple of Kukulcan or El Castillo, named by the Spaniards in the sixteenth century, was built in the twelfth century after Christ by the Mayas itzaes in the ancient city of Chichen Itza. Its geometric pyramidal design has nine levels, four facades with central stairways and an upper platform topped by a pavilion in which they worshipped the Mayan god Kukulkan, also known as the Feathered Serpent.

La Comisaría llegó a Guadalajara como el nuevo lugar a donde se acude a comer, a beber bien y a convivir. El establecimiento, que desde la entrada ya invita al disfrute, “nace de la idea de abrir una cantina en la ciudad de Guadalajara con el concepto que existe en la Ciudad de México, porque allá la gente a va a comer, cenar y beber sin llegar a lo gourmet; además, esa es una oferta saturada en esta ciudad. Traemos, a través de nuestra carta, el elemento de la tradición que se ha perdido, de los platillos servidos en la casa de la abuela, como unas albóndigas al chipotle”, relata Fernando González de la Peña, Gerente Operativo de La Comisaría. Un aspecto que fue tomado en cuenta al crear la cantina es que “en esta ciudad todavía tenemos la oportunidad de sentarnos a la mesa y comer agradablemente o, mientras esperamos al amigo, podemos disfrutar de una entrada. Así que aprovechamos esto y llevamos a la mesa siete guisos para taquear, tenemos diez entradas para degustar la copa y un menú con ensaladas, sopas, pollo, carne y pescado”, añade González de la Peña. Desde luego, el lugar no está montado al azar, ya que el Gerente Operativo de La Comisaría cuenta con más de 20 años de experiencia en el medio restaurantero y el proyecto estuvo incubado por muchos años, “hasta que nos juntamos cinco personas y aquí estamos; la idea es que te aprehenda el comer, que te capturen sus sabores”, destaca Fernando González. Para armar el concepto de La Comisaría fue realizada una
investigación acerca de los nombres de las cantinas que ya existen en la Ciudad de México. “Viví allá durante doce años”, recuerda González de la Peña, “y siempre tuve el deseo de abrir una cantina en Guadalajara. Todas las cantinas tienen un nombre llamativo y muy folclórico (La Parroquia, La Vaquita, El Gallo de Oro…), esa es su particularidad. Buscamos nombres que no estuvieran registrados, se nos ocurrió este y le dimos un tratamiento divertido. Después empezó el juego de los logos, relacionado con los barrotes de los separos, haciendo algo chusco. Incluso, tenemos un área para que la gente pueda tomarse una foto que evoca las cárceles de antaño, pero de forma divertida. Fue crear un concepto basado en la cárcel con el trasfondo de cantina”. Cabe señalar que el lugar va dirigido a un público de buen nivel, pero con costos accesibles. “Queremos tener una carta amplia de tequilas porque somos, como región, una insignia mexicana; tendremos variedades de mezcal y una cava con 35 etiquetas de varios países”, hace notar el joven restaurantero. Además, La Comisaría tiene varios plus que hacen del lugar un sitio para el encuentro, como una terraza para fumadores, un comedor para no fumadores y un salón con 12 lugares que hace las veces de centro de negocios, pues también puede fungir como lugar para desarrollar determinadas funciones de trabajo, ¿por qué no? La Comisaría es, en última instancia, un una cantina agradable y social, un nuevo espacio que no existía en la capital jalisciense.

La Comisaria opened its doors in Guadalajara as a new place where one can go to have a good meal, drink something good and share. This place that invites you to enjoy your visit “was born from the idea of opening a bar in the city of Guadalajara with the same concept as in Mexico City because there, people have lunch, dine and drink without being a gourmet place like many places in this city. Our menu offers tradition that reminds us of our granny´s house, like chipotle meatballs”, says Fernando González de la Peña, the Operations Manager of La Comisaria. One aspect that was taken into account when creating the canteen is that “in this town we still have the opportunity to sit at the table and eat nicely or, while we wait for our friends, we can enjoy appetizers. So, we took advantage of this and serve seven different stews to “taquear”, we have ten appetizers to enjoy a glass of wine and a menu with salads, soups, chicken, meat and fish,” says González de la Peña. Of course, the place was not planned randomly as the Operations Manager has over 20 years of experience in the restaurant business and the project was incubated for many years, “until we meet five people

La Meseta de Lagos de Moreno No creo que alguien, camino a México, León o Lagos de Moreno, no le haya llamado la atención un cerro plano como pastel, que se ve no muy lejos del cruce de las carreteras. “Un algo” nos atraía cada vez que pasábamos por ahí. “Un día” -decíamosaveriguaremos lo que nos causa ese encanto; porque con la prisa que siempre tenemos por llegar a donde sea, mitos y leyendas se quedaban en pendiente. “Un día”… llegando al famoso cruce, decidimos meternos entre brechas polvorientas para llegar al pié de ella. La primera nos condujo a una brechita peligrosa que sube por el lado norte y termina a medio cerro frente a unas rocas. Otro montón de y griegas nos llevaron a un letrero que -casi tartamudeando- nos indicaba que por un lado se iba a Paso de la Mesa, y por otro a Jesús con la Paz y al Circo. Nos decidimos por el primero, en donde, al asomarnos a la ventana de la tiendita del pueblo y gritar “quieeeren” como se acostumbra solicitar atención del tendero, tuvimos la suerte de conocer a Marichayo: linda muchachita propietaria, que además de informarnos sobre la meseta, se ofreció a ser nuestra guía para el ascenso.
-En una media hora estamos arribanos dijo. Una hora se nos fue tan solo en cruzar corrales, cercos de alambre y huizaches para llegar al pié de la meseta. La pared casi vertical de roca ardiente (eran las tres de la tarde) fue el reto para ¡sin voltear abajo! conquistar aquel pastel. Hora y pico más tarde, con manos, pies y rodillas maltratados… cinco enormes cristos colocados por los peregrinos de San Juan, nos recibían al borde de la meseta. (Nos extrañó que todos miraran hacia los verdes plantíos, y ninguno pusiera atención a la desértica meseta). Más tarde, como el descenso casi vertical se veía aterrador, y a sabiendas que la mayoría de los accidentes suceden de bajada, decidimos cruzar la extensa meseta y bajar por el lado opuesto menos difícil. Aunque en la desértica planicie, nunca vimos fantasmas o aparecidos, si sentimos que en ella el viento siempre soplaba con un dejo de misterio, tan lejano como cercano, y se enredaba, sin tiempo, entre las espinas agudas y punzantes de la misteriosa, seductora, caliente y fantástica montaña.
The Plateau of Lagos de Moreno I do not think anyone on the way to Mexico, Leon or Lagos de Moreno has missed a hill shaped like a flat cake which is not far from the crossroads. There was something we were appealed to every time we passed by. “One day”, we said, we will find out what causes us the charm, because we are always in a hurry and do not stop to know about these myths and legends. One day, when we arrived at the crossroads, we decided to drive along dusty roads to reach the bottom of it. The first one led us to a dangerous dirt road that goes to the north side and ends in the half of the hill in front of some rocks. Then, we walked to the town and heard someone yelling “quieeeeeren” from the window of a little store; it was Marichayo, a very nice young lady and the owner of the store who offered to be our guide on the way up. “We will be there in 30 minutes” she said. It took us one hour to cross the pens, wire fences and huizaches to reach the bottom of the plateau. Climbing the vertical rock wall without burning your fingers (it was 3 o´clock in the afternoon) was the challenge to conquer that cake. One hour later, hands, feet and knees damaged ... five huge Christs placed by pilgrims of San Juan, greeted us at the edge of the plateau. (We were surprised to see that everybody was looking at all the green plantations, and nobody was paying attention to the desert plateau). Later, as the vertical descent looked scary, and knowing that most of the accidents happen on the way down, we decided to cross the wide plateau and go down through the less difficult side. Although we never saw ghosts or apparitions in the desert plateau, we did feel the wind blowing with a touch of mystery, so close and so far, embracing the thorny bushes of the mysterious, seductive, hot and fantastic mountain.
