Message from the Academy Principal, Mr R C Evans Welcome to the latest edition of The Ridings‟ Federation Winterbourne International Academy Newsletter.

End of Term 6 Arrangements The Academy will close at 1.20pm on Wednesday 18th July 2012. It will be a Non-Uniform Day with the students making a donation to their chosen charities.

Thursday 19th July 2012 is an INSET Day The Academy will reopen for all students on Tuesday, 4th September 2012 – this will be Week 1.

It has been an extremely difficult and demanding Term 5 to date. On 26th April we learnt of the tragic death of Megan Eyers, one of our Sixth Form students. Megan was a delightful, hardworking and intelligent student, and I am sure that all parents/carers will join the Academy in offering their thoughts and support to Megan‟s family and friends, especially Mr and Mrs Eyers and Megan‟s two sisters, at this desperately sad time. Megan‟s funeral was held at Westerleigh Crematorium on Thursday, 10th May 2012.

Parents/carers will also be aware that the Academy received notification of its Section 5 Ofsted Inspection on 26th and 27th April 2012. The Inspection Team completed their activities on 26th April but the second day was postponed. We are anticipating the second day being rescheduled before the end of Term 5, after which the inspection report will be distributed to all parents/carers. Could I take this opportunity to thank all parents/carers who completed and returned the questionnaires for Ofsted.

I am delighted to inform all parents/carers that BAM have been appointed as the preferred bidder for the Academy‟s Capital Investment Programme. During the period 1st-4th May there was an extensive programme of consultation meetings including members of the Academy community and the wider community.

A presentation has been placed on the Academy‟s website which outlines in detail what the Academy will look like when the project is completed, together with details of the building process including the phasing. We currently expect the works to commence in Summer 2012 (subject to planning consent) with the buildings completed in Summer 2014, and the external landscaping finalised in Autumn 2014.

During the build there will be some necessary changes to current procedures, eg students and staff entry/exit points, movement within the site. Full details of these changes will be provided well in advance. I am sure that you will join me in looking forward to the completion of the new build when both the students and staff will finally have the learning environment that they deserve.

Again this year, a number of presentation evenings are planned: Years 7 and 8 Presentation Evening – Monday 2nd July 2012, 7.00pm, Main Hall.

Years 9 and 10 Presentation Evening – Monday 9th July 2012, 7.00pm, Main Hall.

I would also like to remind all parents/carers of both the Study Leave arrangements and dates of examination results: A Level students Exams commence on 31st May 2012 and end on 25th June 2012.

Study Leave commences on 28th May 2012, ie last full timetable day 25th May 2012.

Year 12 Students Exams commence on 14th May 2012 and end on 30th May 2012.

Study leave commences on 14th May 2012, ie last full timetable day 11th May 2012.

Students return on 11th June 2012.

Nb – Vocational courses in both Years 12 and 13 will continue until 29th June 2012 unless a student has completed all aspects of the course.

Year 11 Students Exams commence on 14th May 2012 and end on 27th June 2012.

Study leave commences on 21st May 2012, ie last full timetable day 18th May 2012.

14th May 2012 – 18th May 2012: Normal timetabled lessons continue with revision sessions prior to exams, co-ordinated by Mrs Clavey.

Leaving Days Year 13 – morning of 25th May 2012.

Year 11 – afternoon of 18th May 2012.

I would also like to take this opportunity to advise you of the arrangements for the distribution of examination results in the summer. On the designated results days a printout of the examination results will be available from the corridor outside the Exams Office at 8.00am for A and AS Level and 9.30am for GCSE. IBDP – 5th July 2012 at 3.30pm.

AS and A Level - 16th August 2012 GCSE, including Year 10 modules - 23rd August 2012 Candidates can arrive in person to collect their results. However, if they are unable to collect them in person a relative or friend can collect the results on their behalf. The candidate must give the person collecting the results a signed letter giving permission for the results to be collected. Results will not be given out over the phone or by email. We will fax results in response to a faxed request with the candidate’s signature on it. These are the only circumstances where we will issue results to anyone other than the candidate in person.

Kapil Agarwal – Congratulations to Year 11 student Kapil who was recently invited to a presentation at Buckingham Palace with Princess Anne. Kapil was receiving the Grand Prior Award, an award which requires considerable commitment over a substantial period of time. Kapil is also heavily involved as a Cadet with the Central Ambulance Service and wishes to pursue a future career in medicine.

Jess Hopton – Jess has been invited to carry the Olympic Torch during its journey across the UK. This is a tremendous honour for Jess and we are thrilled that one of our students will be involved in what is a truly global event.

Guinan Williams-McCarthy – Guinan won an iPod at the Ambitions Event held on 1st March 2012.

It was also pleasing to hear of a successful visit to Kelbra by the Frampton Cotterell and District Twinning Association. Sixteen students, together with Ms Turner, took part in the visit and we look forward to further participation in Twinning Events in the future.

Finally may I wish all students sitting external examinations the very best, and we look forward to another excellent set of results with students successfully moving on to the next stage of their education or into the world of work.

PARKING Parents/carers are asked to be considerate to the local community when dropping off and collecting their children at the start and end of the Academy day.

Parents/carers should not enter the main Academy site or the front entrance to the Academy. The forecourt should not be used as a turning area. The presence of additional vehicles on the Academy site does present a health and safety risk.

In exceptional circumstances, e.g. when a student has a mobility issue, parents/carers who enter the site must do so with extreme caution and with the permission of the Academy Principal.

FRAMPTON COTTERELL AND DISTRICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION VISIT TO KELBRA From 29th March to 5th April 2012 a group of 16 Winterbourne International Academy students, accompanied by Miss Turner, scout leaders and a group of Twinning Association members, visited Kelbra in Germany. The group of students consisted of Year 10 German students who stayed with local families as well as several scouts who stayed in a local hostel. During their time in Kelbra, the students had the opportunity to visit several local towns, a chocolate factory, a university, a church (containing an organ once owned by J S Bach), and even a rose garden with the largest collection of roses in Europe.

In addition to this, some students even went to the cinema to watch a film in German!

Mrs Jenny Rowan from the Twinning Association said “Everyone got on really well together and all the adults commented on what great young people we had with us. They were a credit to themselves, their families, their Academy and their community.”

This is wonderful feedback, well done to all involved!

BBC SCHOOL NEWS REPORT 2012 Several students from Winterbourne International Academy took part in BBC School News Report event on Thursday 15th March 2012. The goal of this off-curriculum day was for the students to learn about the world of journalism. They worked hard all day to produce a high-quality newscast that is now online http://www.trfwia.org.uk/index.php/international-main/bbc-school-report-2012 Ollie, one of the students taking part, said “I really enjoyed the whole day; it was engaging and helped me to understand how the world of journalism really works. It gives us experience of working under pressure, which will be very useful later on in life.”

In addition to this, Alisha said, “I have enjoyed the BBC school report because it was fun and I learnt a lot of things, I really enjoyed the whole experience!” Laura agreed but added “it was interesting to be able to research different new stories, and then present them in your own way!”

NATIONAL CAREERS SERVICE As part of the Academy‟s duty to provide impartial careers information, advice and guidance we wish to make students and their parents/carers aware of the new National Careers Service website and phoneline which the Government has recently launched. It is an additional source of information, advice and guidance to those listed in the Student Personal Planners pages 172-174 and it will feature as part of the Careers programme in future tutorial work.

The new National Careers Service provides free and impartial careers advice service for children (aged 13 and over.) Students are able to access information, advice and guidance on all aspects of careers, skills and training. The service can be accessed online or by telephone.

The website hosts information on over 750 job profiles and provides essential information on what each involves and the skills needed, tips to support applications, such as help with CV drafting and interview advice, and a wide range of guidance to assist in accessing training and different career paths. https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/ The phone service gives students the chance to have a chat with a trained careers adviser and receive advice tailored to their needs and individual situation. INDOOR CAR BOOT SALE Many thanks to all the sellers and buyers who came along to our Indoor Car Boot Sale. We were inundated with requests for tables, so remember to book early next year! The event was a huge success and we raised £642!

CHRISTMAS MARKET We are already thinking ahead to our Christmas Market, which will be held on Saturday 24th November 2012 from 10am- 3pm. Grade 6

Musical Theatre Singing (Merit) Many of the Winterbourne International Academy students are performing exceptionally well when representing the Academy or performing independently in their chosen sport. They are really putting the Academy on the sporting map at a national level, and deserve recognition and congratulations.

FOOTBALL The school football season is about to end for this year and I am happy to report that all Years have done very well this season. Each Year group managed to chalk up a number of wins against other schools in the South Gloucestershire and Bristol Cup Competition. The Year 9 team and the Year 11 team both made it to the finals of the cup, to be played at The Frys Club in Keynsham on Thursday 17th May 2012.

We wish them all the best for those games and congratulate them on the outstanding achievement of reaching the final. Over 32 schools take part in the competition from each Year group, so to have two different years represent the Academy in the final is exceptional.

NETBALL Netball continues to be a success with all Years continuing to do well in an on-going fixture list.

ATHLETICS AND CRICKET The cricket and athletics season is about to begin but is currently being hampered by the poor weather.

There will be more to report on this next time when we have played in fixtures.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR 7 GLOBAL EYES PROJECT During terms 3 and 4, our Year 7 students received a series of „Global Eyes‟ workshops delivered by the Bristol-based charity African Initiatives, which involved looking at the stereotypes of African people in many of today‟s media. The students themselves were asked to think of areas of African culture they wanted to understand better, and the charity created three bespoke lessons that addressed their interests.

Following the success of these workshops the charity invited students from participating schools along for a celebration to mark the end of the Global Eyes project in Broadmead Baptist Church on Union Street. On Friday 30th March a total of 33 Year 7 students opted out of the dress-down day and represented Winterbourne International Academy in full uniform and in fine style at the event. Activities on the day ranged between film-making, journalism and creating campaigns using social media. The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with favourite elements of the day including the film-making and creative activities.

YEAR 9 CLIMATE WEEK EVENT WITH YATE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY - 12TH MARCH 2012 As part of the launch of Climate Week 2012 a group of Year 9 Winterbourne International Academy students travelled to Yate International Academy. The day involved a challenge that was itself shrouded in mystery and was kept secret until it was unveiled nationwide at 9am that Monday morning. The challenge was revealed to be to “Green Your Space – Develop an idea to change a place you know, to make it better for the environment.”

All students involved from both Academies really threw themselves into the task and the variety of locations tackled and ideas for this redevelopment was fantastic.

Several areas around Yate and Winterbourne were earmarked for redevelopment and it was encouraging to see how proud students were of the areas in which they meet their friends and identify with. Many of the Federation‟s Year 9 students were making good cases for allocating funds in a sustainable way that would benefit a broad section of the local community. Some students planned to develop the „Oxbow‟ fields nearby, whereas others planned an enterprise for the Academy where roof space was used to cultivate honey and vegetables for farmers markets!

Some groups were inevitably drawn to the wackier end of the environmental spectrum and we even saw the proposal of pedal powered buses, recycled fashion and solar-powered hats. Despite some projects favouring imagination over practicality, it was heartening to see the genuine dedication that our young learners were putting into a problem that they recognised would have a wider impact on the community and not just themselves. Whatever the solution to the „Green Your Space‟ was, it was rooted in a passion for the environment and willingness to improve it.

The winner across the Federation was judged by Yate International Academy Principal Mr. Gilbert, who was looking for good concepts as well as a professional delivery that really fitted the design brief. Top honours went to a Yate International Academy team that thought the new Cabot Circus Development in Bristol needed the „Green‟ touch. They developed a series of features which took advantage of the huge number of visitors each day, designing moveable paving stones which created friction as shoppers walked around. They also invented „Energy Boxes‟ which could be attached to the bikes of people who cycle around the area. The winners from Winterbourne International Academy were those with a vision for the „Oxbow‟ fields becoming a cycle-friendly youth centre created from local materials and recycled products.

The Year 9 Winterbourne International Academy students who participated in the Climate week challenge were: Shannon Ashford, Rebecca Barnes, Peter Brooks, Harry Bryant, Biel Casey, Chelsea Davies, Alena Davis, Lewis Ford, Harriet Gillard, Natalia Golebiowska, Jonathan Gunn, Sophie Hale, Max Hatton, Rachel Hickey, Charley Hicks, Callum Jewell, Alistair Mitchell, Chloe Potter, Charlotte Ross, Xinyu Shen, Georgia Stowell, Jack Thomson, Jack Walker and Alex Westcott. A special mention goes out to the three boys who chose to cycle to Yate International Academy to give our trip extra green credentials. Well done lads!

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES ...One of Our Specialisms COME ALONG TO THE LANGUAGES CLUB! Languages Club runs every Monday lunch time in room AG4. It is open to students in all Year Groups. We learn about all sorts of different languages.

ADIOS! DE NOEMI, A BIENTÔT DE LAURÉNA AND AUF WIEDERSEHEN VON ESTHER (GOODBYE FROM THE MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE ASSISTANTS!) The last 8 months have been a wonderful experience for us – but where has the time gone?

We cannot quite believe how fast these last 8 months have passed and are happy to have spent them with you all at Winterbourne International Academy. We were truly lucky to come here and have learnt a lot - not only the English language and how the English school system works but also each other‟s cultures.

We hope we were able to contribute to your language learning and that you might be able to travel the world and develop your language skills in the years to come.

We shall be leaving soon, and we will definitely miss you all! We have enjoyed every bit of our time here – teaching, planning, sharing with the other members of staff, and learning from them.

But after every sad story something good follows, and we have some happy news - Lauréna will be staying another year with you – so A l´année prochaine!

MANDARIN CLUB On Tuesday 27th March 2012 a group of students went along to Mandarin Club at lunchtime to take part in food tasting (using chop sticks!) and also to learn some Tai-Chi! As these photos show, a great time was had by all.

TEAM MATHS CHALLENGE FINAL On Tuesday 24th April 2012 a team of four students from Years 10 and 11 travelled to Exeter University to represent South Gloucestershire and the Academy in the South West final of the Team Maths Challenge. The competition was tough and our students did very well in rounds including memorising „medieval Lincolnshire‟ numbers and then answering questions using these numbers. A good time was had by all. Congratulations to Jake Hawker, Chris Shine, Kapil Agarwal and Scott Rose.

INTERMEDIATE MATHS CHALLENGE – 2ND ROUND Following the success of a number of our students in the first round of the Intermediate Maths Challenge, Anya Appoo, Marko Dogramadzi, Emma Hazelwood, Bruce Kalaiti, Scott Rose, Joe Parker, Chris Shine, Daniel Sims, Richard Lam and Xinyu Shen all sat second round papers of varying levels of difficulty. Chris and Xinyu sat the hardest papers and received a certificate of Merit and a certificate of Distinction respectively.

Xinyu also gained a medal and book prize as a result of finishing in the top 50 Year 9 students in the country – an outstanding achievement! Well done to all who qualified for the second round papers.

POLITICS STUDENTS TRIP TO PARLIAMENT – WEDNESDAY 18TH APRIL 2012 On Wednesday 18th April 2012, a group of Politics students from Winterbourne International Academy, accompanied by Mr Keel and Miss Mooney, visited the Houses of Parliament in London.

They were given a guided tour by Lord Harrison of Chester (who also happens to be Miss Mooney‟s Uncle) and had the opportunity to meet Lord Speaker before watching a debate in the Commons. All of the students enjoyed the day!

PYRAMID SCHEME Bristol Pyramid scheme organises after school activity clubs for primary school children who are selected because they are felt to have low self esteem and lack confidence.

Volunteer leaders run the club and hold review meetings with staff to discuss the children's development and progress.

Ten children, aged 7 and 8, will be offered membership of a Pyramid Club. The club, run by selected, trained and policechecked volunteers, runs once a week for 10 weeks, for 1.5 hours after the Academy day.

After being inspired by an assembly about the Pyramid Scheme, we decided to apply in order to partake in the scheme. During our 4 weeks of training we learnt about safeguarding children, stages of group development and the importance of self-esteem building games, amongst many other things.

Each session begins and ends with a „circle time‟ which is beneficial for the children as it enables them to speak about their feelings and emotions. The children then participate in a variety or games and activities such as parachute games, arts and crafts, and many more.

The children are given many opportunities to participate in new experiences, for example, making smoothies, decorating pizzas and creating personal t-shirts. These enable the children to overcome their fears about trying new things and encourage them to make friends with their peers.

EARTHFALL It is not every day in the life of a 14 year old Year 10 student that you get to work with one of the UK‟s leading dance and physical theatre companies - but here at Winterbourne International Academy, 35 of our students did just that in a week‟s residency with Earthfall.

Based in Cardiff, Earthfall visit our Academy‟s Arts Centre once a year to work with students from Year 10 in a week long residency comprising of new techniques which culminate into a non-stop performance.

Year 9 students also got the opportunity to work with the group making up the live band accompanying the action. This year‟s theme was Chelsea Hotel (New York City) and Jessica Cohen (Artistic Director) stated that they thought the group were fantastic.

You must be able to pick up and drop off the students on a daily basis at a local meeting point. The students are out of the house from 8am until 6-7pm on field trips.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people is paramount. All hosts are expected to share this commitment and will be subject to vetting, including an enhanced CRB disclosure check.

COMPETITION – GET SNAPPING! London Camera Exchange Group have launched their battle of the schools photo competition.

The theme of the competition is ‘Pets and Nature’ and students from Winterbourne International Academy can submit photos for the Years 7 and over (maximum age for entry is 16 years old) category.

All students need to do is send their A4 printed photograph with their name, age, school year and school name written on the back to: London Camera Exchange, 53, The Horsefair, Bristol, BS1 3JP The closing date for receiving entries is 18th June 2012.

The prizes for the competition are as follows – 1st – Digital camera 2nd – Astronomical scope 3rd – Binoculars

A digital camera will also be awarded to the school of the winner of each age category.
