About us
“Your child can get the head start they need for Primary and Secondary education”
Welcome to Yate International Academy Woodlands Nursery On behalf of The Ridings’ Federation of Academies, we would like to introduce you to the Woodlands Nursery. This important brochure will provide you with the information you require regarding Woodlands Nursery educational provision for 3 to 4 year olds which offers the perfect stepping stone into the primary and secondary phase of Yate International Academy. We are committed to developing a long term partnership with you which delivers high standards in all aspects of education and care for your child in a safe and happy environment. Alongside this, the Woodlands Nursery will provide the flexibility of care you require whether it be a few mornings a week or a full nursery day 5 days per week. By the end of their nursery education, your child will be fully prepared for the Reception year in the Woodlands Primary Phase with friends they have made along the way. This wonderful new nursery is an important addition to our All Through Academy, fulfilling our vision of delivering education to our children from 3 to 19 years of age. The need to develop a solid educational foundation from an early age provides the necessary springboard for future development and the high educational provision of this nursery begins that process. We hope you enjoy reading this brochure and look forward to welcoming your child to the Woodlands Nursery in September 2013. Dr Gibson, Roger Gilbert, Julie Hogan

Classroom Teacher Vs Nursery Manager Very few pre-school settings in South Gloucestershire have qualified teachers rather than Nursery managers, however research shows that good early teaching makes a difference to a child learning to read and write. This is why we employ a classroom teacher to run the Nursery.
In partnership with parents/carers Communicating and developing a positive relationship between our staff and parents/carers helps create a happy and nurturing atmosphere. We will communicate regularly, provide reports, and raise particularly positive stories about their day. Of course, we will not shy away from any problems either, allowing any issues to be addressed quickly.
Day in the Life

HOME TIME Whether you are collecting at the end of the morning or the end of the day, staff will be available to talk to you about your child’s day.
Working together for your children We maintain the ratio of adults to children in the Nursery that is set by the Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements. We also utilise additional support where possible to complement these ratios. This helps us to: § § § §
give time and attention to each child talk with the children about their interests and activities help children to experience and benefit from the activities we provide allow the children to safely explore and be adventurous
Assessment and Learning Diaries We assess how young children are learning and developing by observing them frequently. The Nursery keeps a record of achievement for each child in the form of a Learning Diary. Your child's Learning Diary provides information about your child's needs, activities, interests and progress. We will work in partnership with you to keep this record, and this information will enable the key person to identify your child's stage of development.
Development and Learning
The Learning Environment provides a range of carefully structured play based activities, following the interests and learning needs we develop with your child. These rich learning experiences, across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, are both teacher-led and created by children using their own ideas. Throughout the day your child will have a wonderful time discovering, exploring, observing and creating within the high quality learning environment. We positively encourage free flow indoor and outdoor play, ensuring we nurture all interests and learning styles.
The Early Years Foundation Stage The provision for children's development and learning is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (DfE 2012). Our provision reflects the four overarching principles of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. A Unique Child Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. Positive Relationships Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships. Enabling Environments Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners, parents and carers. Learning and Development Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision including children with special educational needs and disabilities.
How we provide for development and learning Children start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born. The care and education offered by our Nursery helps children to continue to do this by providing all of the children with interesting and motivating activities that are appropriate for their stage of development. For each area, the level of progress that children are expected to have attained by the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage is defined by the Early Learning Goals
The Areas of Development and Learning comprise of: Prime Areas:
Personal, social and emotional development • making relationships; • self confidence and self awareness; and • managing feelings and behaviour.
Physical development • moving and handling; and • health and self-care.
Communication and language • listening and attention; • understanding; and • speaking.
Specific Areas: Literacy • reading; and • writing.
Mathematics • • • •
numbers; shapes; space; and measure.
Understanding the world • people and communications; • the world; and • technology.
Expressive arts and design • exporing and using media and materials; and • being imaginative.
Characteristics of effective learning We understand that all children engage with other people and their environment through the characteristics of effective learning that are described in the ‘Development Matters Early Years Foundation Stage’ as:
§ § §
playing and exploring - engagement; active learning - motivation; creating and thinking critically - thinking.
We aim to provide for the characteristics of effective learning by observing how a child is learning and being clear about what we can do and provide in order to support each child to remain an effective and motivated learner.
