The National Fire Protection Association has named DC Ranch a Firewise USA® Certified community as the Ranch Association continues to successfully complete the Firewise USA program’s annual requirements. This recognition is an outstanding accomplishment for the Firewise Committee, DC Ranch Landscaping Department, and community collaborators including the Scottsdale Fire Department, McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, Copper Ridge School, DC Ranch sub associations, The Country Club at DC Ranch, and The Silverleaf Club. These partnerships are an invaluable part of the continued success of the project, and it is only with this community cooperation that DC Ranch Firewise work is now nationally celebrated.
DC Ranch is Firewise Certified
Launched in 2021, the DC Ranch project is a multi-year fire fuels mitigation effort and is the largest community in the nation to hold the Firewise USA certification. The project continues through 2023 with 16 acres targeted for clearing in Country Club, Windgate, Terrace Homes East and West, The Estates, and Montelena by years end. With a total of 48 acres identified for hazardous fuels mitigation throughout DC Ranch, the project will be complete
in 2024. Following project completion, the work will continue with refocused efforts to uphold the defensible space around previously cleared common areas maintained by the Ranch Association. This post-project work will ensure continued Firewise USA certification in DC Ranch.
This certification is an important acknowledgment of the long term, strategic and physical work done to protect DC Ranch homes and comes on the heels of the Ranch Association grant application submission to the Arizona State Department of Forestry and Fire Management to request additional funding support for continuing work on fire fuels mitigation. More information on the DC Ranch Firewise project can be found on DCRanch.com.
Staying fire “wise” at home
While DC Ranch is strengthening its protective barrier to try to prevent wildland to urban fires, there are many resources available for residents to stay educated about fire prevention in and around residential neighborhoods. The National Fire Protection Association, Scottsdale Fire Department, and personal insurance companies all provide guidance for keeping homes safe from fire dangers.
• Ensure all backyard fires, fireplaces and grills are completely extinguished after use.
• Do not burn debris, vegetation clippings or trash.
• Keep lawns watered and landscaping healthy.
• Remove flammable objects from front and back yards and store items properly—at least 30 feet away from the residence for maximum safety.
• Maintain landscaping per the DC Ranch Standards on personal property to ensure fires cannot “jump” to unmaintained vegetation.
Community Standards corner
• When modifying the exterior of a residence, use appropriate materials for fire-resistance and protection.
• Inquire with residential insurance companies about insurance deals available for at-home fire protection.
As school starts and new routines begin, residents can anticipate an increase in traffic. DCR-24 Speeding states all persons traveling on DC Ranch private roads must obey the speed limit. The DC Ranch speed limit is 15 mph unless posted otherwise. DC Ranch does not enforce speeds on Legacy Boulevard, Thompson Peak Parkway and the South loop of Desert Camp Drive, which are public thoroughfares monitored by the Scottsdale Police Department. With kids soaking up the last days of summer break, it is important to bring play equipment in the house, garage, or behind a barrier wall after every use, and keep all other personal items stored. DCR-25 Storage of Personal Items requires that all personal items must be stored out of public view, either behind a fence or inside the garage. This includes, but is not limited to, items such as ladders, bicycles, toys, sports equipment, building materials, etc.

Scottsdale gives green light to 101 Freeway construction
Scottsdale City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) on June 13. The agreement clears the way for ADOT’s project design and construction to make modifications to four 101 Freeway traffic interchanges: 1) Princess Drive/ Pima Road; 2) Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard; 3) Raintree Drive; and 4) Shea Boulevard.
The ADOT project is slated to start construction this fall. It seeks to improve the traffic flow and increase the capacity and efficiency on the 101 and conjoining intersections, and includes the following:
• Add one general-purpose lane in each direction on the 101 from Pima Road/Princess Drive to Shea Boulevard.
• Add a third southbound left turn lane at Pima Road/Princess Drive Interchange.
• Convert the Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard Interchange to a diamond configuration.
• Add right turn lanes at Raintree Drive and Shea Boulevard interchanges and cross-streets.
• Update sidewalks to make them ADA-compliant.
• Upgrade freeway and ramp lighting to LED. For up-to-date project information visit AZDOT.gov.

HonorHealth, Cigna Healthcare and Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona have announced the launch of Blue Zones Project in Scottsdale to help residents live better, longer lives. The Project is a comprehensive initiative that transforms the environments where people live, work, learn and play to measurably improve community well-being, resilience and economic vitality.
Blue Zones Project is a first-of-its-kind population health initiative based on research and principles developed by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow and New York Times best-selling author who identified the cultures of the world—or blue zones—with the healthiest, longestliving populations.
HonorHealth supported the initial Blue Zones Activate assessment in collaboration with the City of Scottsdale, during which the Blue Zones team did a deep dive into the city to determine if it was feasible to launch a community-wide initiative.
Todd LaPorte, CEO of HonorHealth, shares, “As the largest employer and healthcare provider in Scottsdale, we are committed to improving the health and well-being of everyone in Scottsdale and throughout the Valley, and that means expanding our efforts outside hospital walls. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful place. However, loneliness and isolation have been growing within our community and one out of two Scottsdale residents currently report they are struggling with their health. Now is the time to act to improve the well-being of the communities we serve, and this Blue Zones Project will help us build a sustainable future.”
STUDIES ABOUT BLUE ZONES
Research shows that where people live has a bigger influence on their health than their genetics, so Blue Zones Project focuses on the Life Radius®—the area close to home where people spend 90% of their lives. Blue Zones Project works with communities to optimize public policies, social connections, and the places and spaces where people spend the most time (streets, parks, schools, workplaces, grocery stores, faith communities and homes) to help make healthy choices easy and more accessible to all.
Blue Zones comes to Scottsdale
Zones Project Scottsdale
Participating communities have seen double-digit drops in obesity and smoking rates, economic investment in downtown corridors, grant funding awards to support policies and programs to improve health equity and measurable savings in healthcare costs.
“Cigna Healthcare’s mission is to improve the health and vitality of those we serve, and Blue Zones Project can help us achieve this by sustainably improving health, well-being, and vitality at the community level,” says Kim Shepard, commercial market president of Cigna Healthcare of Arizona. “We are proud to partner with leading organizations HonorHealth and Goodwill in this effort; together, we can create a healthier, happier community with higher vitality and quality of life.”
“Goodwill is a social impact engine that has helped Arizonans build pathways out of poverty for more than 75 years,” said Tim O’Neal, CEO of Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona. “We are passionate about creating opportunities and communities where every person can thrive, and the Blue Zones Project will help us drive sustainable change. We are proud to partner with Blue Zones and other Valley leaders on such an important initiative.”
Ben Leedle, CEO of Blue Zones and co-founder of Blue Zones Project, says, “We are excited to come together with these powerful leading organizations in this partnership for the greater good. We applaud these forward-looking, exemplary leaders for investing in improving the well-being for all current and future residents. We believe Scottsdale can become a model for communities around the country in their commitment to the future health, happiness, resilience and economic vitality of their residents.”
The launch of Blue Zones Project represents the beginning of a multi-year collaborative effort with the City of Scottsdale that involves the entire community working together toward one common goal—to support and build a culture of community health and well-being. The local implementation team has begun the Foundation and planning phase. For more information, visit bluezones.com/bzpscottsdale.
Empower everyone to live longer, better lives
While exercise lowers mortality risk by 20 to 40 percent, and having a good diet is more or less the same at about 30 percent, Blue Zone studies have shown that relationships and being connected to your community can lower mortality risk by 45 percent. Even though
diet and exercise are critical to health and life span, these numbers suggest social connection should not be excluded from the menu of healthy living practices.
Here are some ways to strengthen your social ties in DC Ranch:
• Attend an event or program. Visit DCRanch.com/calendar for a full schedule.
• Try one of several fitness classes available: Yoga, Strength & Balance, Aqua Fitness.
• Join a club! Take a swing with Pickleball Club, join a friendly game of bridge or canasta, enjoy a glass of wine at Grapenuts, or meet neighbors at Women’s Club.

North Scottsdale Speakeasy: Ode to Liberty Station founder
By Susie TimmPaul Keeler’s unexpected and untimely death in 2021 left a hole in the hospitality industry and his restaurant family. To honor Paul’s legacy, his family (who actively run Keeler Hospitality Group and the restaurants therein), have opened Poppy’s Office next door to their Liberty Station location at 34522 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 160 (not the one on Market Street).
The entry vestibule is a replica of Paul’s actual office complete with his desk, lamp, bookshelves and memorabilia. Patrons then enter the speakeasy through a secret passageway.
Once inside, the 1500 square-foot bar features rich fabrics, wood and dark leather bar stools, as well as elements of copper, low lighting and a lot of unique artwork and photos of the Keeler family. Two “family booths” seat large parties with curtains that can be drawn around them for privacy. Type-X Design Studio was the design firm partner for the project. “North Scottsdale doesn’t have many speakeasies—and like all our concepts —we are delighted to open in this part of town. These residents deserve the same type of amazing cocktails and experiences as other parts of the Valley offer. We will continue to innovate in this area—we love playing in the sandbox with our neighbors,” said Matt Keeler, Paul’s son and CEO of Keeler Hospitality Group.
Poppy’s Office is replete with “Poppyisms,” or sayings that the elder Keeler was famous for espousing at any given moment. These sayings are placed around the speakeasy and serve as another reminder of the impact Paul had on the community.
Poppy’s office is open daily for happy hour and closes around 10 p.m.—later on weekends. A rotating selection of “Poppy’s Tacos” are offered daily and customers can also order food to-go from Liberty Station.
Keeler Hospitality Group’s director of beverage, Adam Downey has created an elevated cocktail menu which includes a margarita prepared tableside with freshly squeezed juices, a smoked old fashioned and other innovate libations. A full wine and beer menu is also available.
A month after his father’s passing, the idea for Poppy’s Office came to Matt in a dream. “I woke up, called my family, and said, ‘we have to do this,’ and they agreed,” said Keeler.

DC RANCH - SILVERLEAF EXPERTS
Women’s Club welcomes all
Since its inception as a resident generated idea in 2012, DC Ranch women from all backgrounds and life stages have been invited to participate in monthly Women’s Club activities. Organized by members of the group in collaboration with the DC Ranch Community Council, these year-round activities include luncheons, happy hours, educational classes, and interactive outings that facilitate social connections among neighbors.
“Whether it be bowling, learning and contributing to a local charity, exploring the beautiful Desert Botanical Gardens, or even sipping wine, the Women’s Club is a very welcoming, fun, and energetic group of dynamic women,” states passionate club advocate Victoria Hayes. “I have met women from almost every neighborhood in DC Ranch and friendships have flourished from the initial link of being like-minded neighbors. All ages and stages of life intermingle both on and off the Ranch and each month something new and different is on the calendar.”
Serving as a testament to how Women’s Club provides a powerful platform for ladies to connect, engage and grow, Victoria carries on sharing, “It was a thrill attending a charity luncheon last year and bumping into a friend, also from NYC, that I knew 25+ years ago. I don’t think our paths would have crossed without the DC Ranch Women’s Club bringing us together!”
When continuing to ask residents what it is about Women’s Club that keeps them attending events, Marla Walberg says, “There really is something for everyone. I particularly enjoy learning about the different organizations that support women throughout the Valley and what we can do to contribute and give back." Recently, ladies gathered for a happy hour event in support of Hope Women’s Center, an organization whose mission is to serve, teach and support vulnerable women and teen girls in any difficult life situation. The residents were joined by the Hope organization CEO who spoke about how donations make a lasting impact.
The overall success of Women’s Club is due in large part to the volunteers who serve as Club Chairs and on the program planning committee. All ladies from DC Ranch are invited to share new ideas that they believe support the mission of the Club and continue to promote fun, relaxation and connection for all who attend. Visit DCRanch.com for a calendar list of all upcoming events. Hope to see you soon!

Get to know the Community Patrol and Gate Access Committee
By Kathren Coleman | Ranch AssociationThe Community Patrol and Gate Access (CPGA) Committee has done a tremendous amount of work on behalf of DC Ranch since fall 2022 when the Ranch Association Board of Directors reorganized the structure and scope of work for the committee. Transitioning from the previously named Safety Committee, the revamped CPGA Committee works to review and provide recommendations on various community concerns such as, but not limited to, improvement of services offered by the Association’s third-party vendor, camera technology enhancements and locations, community speed limits, speed deterrent alternatives, reduction of motorized vehicles on paths, resident accountability on standards, and emergency preparedness. The CPGA Committee also recommended a traffic study be done to address areas of concern. The traffic study was completed by Stanley Consultants and provided data with emphasis on traffic calming and speed deterrent options. The committee members meet monthly to discuss improvements for the community and are focusing on the implementation phase of the recommendations that have resulted from the traffic study and addressing concerns from the 2022 Resident Survey.
“I look forward to working with this resident committee to improve the safety in our community by recommending speed deterrents, increasing community patrol presence, and educating our residents on the scope of services that are provided through our community patrol and gate access team,” says Greg Kiraly, Chair of the CPGA Committee.
Considerations to date
Additional safety signage indicating pedestrian/ bicycle and cart crossing, speed limits signs and traffic calming signage. Speed humps are being considered in several locations in Windgate and Horseshoe Canyon in addition to some park areas.
Increasing the speed limit on portions of Windgate Pass.
Enhanced raised crosswalks that are visually different than the road, by using differing color or textures, are also being considered for Windgate, Country Club, and Horseshoe, and perhaps in-road crosswalk lights at Crescent Park/ Ethyl’s Garden area.
Stop bars and enhanced stop signs are part of the recommendation that will assist in curbing excessive speeds.

The Organization of World Heritage Cities recently granted the city of Scottsdale membership among an elite group of more than 200 cities from around the world that are home to UNESCO World Heritage sites.
With this acceptance, the organization recognizes Scottsdale as the location of Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert home and laboratory, Taliesin West, and welcomes the city as an active participant in international efforts to protect and preserve the heritage of mankind.
“Scottsdale is proud to join the Organization of World Heritage Cities in solidarity with communities from around the world,” Mayor David D. Ortega said.

Taliesin West draws travelers from around the world to Scottsdale, and this recognition will further elevate Scottsdale’s status as a renowned destination where art, architecture and design are not only experienced, but created and celebrated,” says Experience Scottsdale President and CEO Rachel Sacco.
