Art is truly in the eye of the beholder and it takes many forms, performing arts, visual, musical, or written. You may have noticed that over the course of the past few years the Parks and Recreation Department has intentionally embraced the arts and attempted to provide art experiences in parks, along greenways, and in our program offerings. With the continuation of these efforts, citizens will see art incorporated in the new Elmwood Park design found in the proposed Artwalk and the erection of a new Amphitheater built and designed to accommodate a very wide variety of art experiences from the visual to the performing and everything in between. We are continuing to nurture our partnerships with like minded providers of art and hope to bring memorable art experiences to neighborhood parks and greenways around the city. Art provides us the opportunity to explore; it stimulates our senses and emotions and allows us to think creatively and it inspires. Keeping in mind the profound words of George Bernard Shaw,

Unlike many other types of fitness programs, these MMA workouts target three aspects of physical conditioning. It starts with specialized “Round 30” conditioning which is high-intensity volume interval training. It helps you to train like a fighter, develop real world strength and stamina and learn how to maximize one without sacrificing the other. You’ll also develop techniques from Thai Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which will teach you the art of striking with the hands, elbows, legs, and knees in addition to effective self-defense and offense when the fight hits the ground. Location: Norwich Venture Center. Classes are Monday to Friday. ALWAYS

Ann Davey Masters Sculpture Garden At Vic Thomas Park The goal of the Ann Davey Masters Memorial project is to provide public art at Vic Thomas Park that will blend into the park’s design. The Memorial represents Ann’s enduring commitment to the arts, both as the former director of the Art Museum and her dedication to the environment with the Clean Valley Council. There are three sculptures in the sculpture garden area and another in the park:

“Calling the Powers,” “Vertical Break,” “Annies Peace,” and “In Flux.”

Vic Thomas Park is the most recently developed City of Roanoke park and is an addition to the Roanoke Valley Greenway system. Located off Memorial Avenue near Memorial Bridge, it connects to Wasena Park via a new Greenway footbridge. The theme and purpose of Vic Thomas Park is to promote our natural environment with design elements that blend into the ecosystems associated with the Roanoke River. The focus of the park is the creation of an informal space consisting of native trees, riparian friendly grasses, picnicking opportunities, trails, nature observation, unstructured play, and wildflower meadows; such a perfect and fitting location to honor Ann.
