GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE Hello Goldstone, It’s 2021 baby. We’re more than halfway through the term and that means a lot of things are coming up: regular dues deadline, Candidates’Training Conference, Awake-A-Thon, elections, and more! A lot of officers are about to retire real soon, so I encourage everyone to make sure they have someone to hand the torch off to. Moving on to a slight non sequitur, I personally lowkey dislike New Year's Resolutions. They aren’t inherently bad because the whole point is to improve yourself. But it feels like they almost always lead to futile efforts and unfulfilled expectations. I don’t like the fact that the resolution process involves waiting until the start of a year to change something about your life and riding the motivation high from New Years day. Motivation is temporary. Instead of resolutions, I usually find mantras I can live by throughout the year. One of those mantras is this: “It’s not too late. You aren’t behind. You’re exactly where you need to be. Every step is necessary.” To those feeling a bit burnt out or directionless right now because of college, work, etc., I want to tell you that it’s ok. We’ll make it. Stay hydrated.

LTG’S NOTE D ECEMBER| Hey Gators! First off, THANKS for being allowing me to serve as your LTG. Stay diligent and push to get ALL club members to pay dues. Expand the ohana by sharing your experiences and memories! Remember we can recruit throughout the WHOLE year! It’s never too late! From our service events of Bedtime Stories to ending it our District Project Week, this month was packed with service, creating a meaningful impact in our community; we arrived at a new chapter of our KIWIN’S journey while welcoming 2021. Regarding the Rose River Memorial Project, Goldstone KIWIN’S created about 48 kits/368 roses to help aid the grieving process for all of us experiencing losses due to Covid-19. Regarding future events, LTG and District Board Interest form has been released. If you want to leave a greater impact on the community, inspire leadership in others, broaden your leadership in KIWIN’S, even if you’re a freshman, I HIGHLY encourage you to apply. I will personally contact you and assist you in any way possible to help you prepare for the conclave where we elect our new LTG for the next term (Feb 6). Please note that it is a requirement to attend the Candidate Training Conference (Jan 16, 1 pm-4 pm). Countless bad things have happened last year but we pulled through working hard. So this year, I ask you to look around do whatever you can calmly and diligently. To those interested in running, feel free to reach out if anything, I’m just one call or text away. Thank you for everything, now let’s finish this term strongly. We aren’t done just yet! Chomping through for service, Juliana Miranda Lieutenant Governor 2020-2021

CLUB DUES

WHERE DO YOUR DUES GO?

+

$7 - CNH KIWIN’S DISTRICT $7 - KEY CLUB INT’L $? - CHOICE BY CLUB $14-21 TOTAL DUES Dues are annual fees that are used to directly benefit the members’ experience within KIWIN’S! Dues can vary from club to club depending on what they decide. They give members eligibility for raffles, merch giveaways, awards, scholarships, and more!

FEB 1ST REGULAR DUES DUE

WHAT ARE

DUES?

“Every year, each club within KIWIN’S is assigned to pay dues to officially establish their position within the organization. With a minimum of $14, $7 is sent to Key Club International and the other half is sent to our district (CNH KIWIN’S). After one pays their dues, they become eligible for certain rights as an official member of the club. For example, members are able to gain service hours and apply for scholarships and awards within KIWIN’S. Paying one’s dues provides many benefits and opportunities within the club that not only allows one to grow, but the organization as well.” Written by Kevin Chung Goldstone Divisional Treasurer

CNH KIWIN’S PROJECTS MAJOR EMPHASIS LIVE2LEARN This is a program that promotes education and builds literacy skills that is specifically focused on ages 5-9 years old. It implements education support structures to assist kids of all levels and abilities to develop and embrace key skills to improve the chances of kids getting at least some of the opportunities afforded to more fortunate contemporaries. It creates endless possibilities to strengthen the common goal of service.

MINOR EMPHASIS PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM It aims to raise awareness and funds to increase education about PTP and preventable accidents/injuries. The leading cause of death of children (infancy to 19 years old) in the US are motor vehicle accidents, physical abuse, drowning accidents, falls, and animal bites. It became a main focus of KIWIN’S in conjunction with CaliforniaNevada-Hawaii Kiwanis in 1992. Our largest fundraiser for this is Fall Rally North and South!

GOVERNOR’S PROJECT UNICEF UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. Through the Coronavirus Children’s Appeal, UNICEF helps to respond, recover, and ultimately reimagine the effects of Covid-19 on children. In all of its work, UNICEF recognizes the particular importance of early childhood development and adolescence. UNICEF programmes focus on the most disadvantaged children, including those living in fragile contexts, those with disabilities, those who are affected by rapid urbanization and those affected by environmental degradation.

CAUSE PARTNER & PREFERRED CHARITY ELIMINATE PROJECT & TRICK OR TREAT ELIMINATE PROJECT The Eliminate Project’s goal is to get rid of the disease, Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT), that affects thousands of mothers and children worldwide. Every 15 minutes, a newborn baby dies from this disease. The newborn becomes too sensitive to light , sound, and

contact that it cannot even experience a

mother’s touch. The Eliminate Project has raised over $82 million since 2012 to help vaccinate mothers and babies against this deadly disease. TRICK-OR-TREAT FOR UNICEF Through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, Kiwanis International and UNICEF partners up in an effort to battle Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus.

UNICEF Math Games December 7-14, 2020 “The UNICEF’s Math for Good Challenge service event was an opportunity where members could solve math problems in order to donate to the UNICEF organization. UNICEF is our district governor’s project and is an organization that works worldwide to raise awareness and help better children’s lives. For every 15 dollars raised, members would receive 1 service hour with a max of 5 hours. Due to the current pandemic situation, I felt that it was a great way for members to give back in a safe way. Being able to raise money for this cause while sharpening my math skills was enjoyable and a great way to help out the community.” Written by Benjamin Xie Glen A. Wilson HS

Club Events Chaffey’s Update

&updates

December 2020 “This month our club came up with many service ideas to do after winter break. We’re planning an event with our local Onario Montclair KIWIN’S and Key Club: a fun and competitive ‘Free Rice Game’. We also were able to pay early bird dues and are working to get more members to pay.” Written by Perla Cardenas Chaffey HS

St. Lucy’s Update December 2020 “We had some great events in the month of December. We organized a toy donation with the Chino Hills neighborhood house, created our board buddy groups, and asked for nominations for member of the month. We also set up a pieology fundraiser for the month of January, with all the proceeds going to PTP” Written by Isabella Lardieri St. Lucy’s Priory HS

Winter Poetry Pajama Jam December 5, 2020 “Here at Los Altos we are very academically driven and inspired to share our experiences with others. That being said we partnered with a local elementary school to hold an event that is both academically beneficial to young students, and an event that serves as a time for the kids to have fun during these solitary times. We enjoyed a holiday-themed zoom, complete with holiday jazz music, holiday backgrounds, and showing up in our cozy pajamas and blankets! We also had fun activities that educated the children on expressing themselves through poetry, types of poetry, famous poets, and how to create a poem. In the end, we got to share our own short poems that were unique and special to us!” Written by Enrique Gonzalez Los Altos HS

RIVER OF ROSES

DECEMBER 20-28, 2020 CNH Kiwanis Division 35 invited Petra Eiko and Marisa Caichiolo from Building Bridges to speak and present the Rose Rive Memorial Project at our December DCM. It was a service project brought to my attention by Ms. Tina Carey, D35 LTG Elect. Normally, Kiwanis Family Clubs and the SLP (Service Leadership Programs), especially Key clubs and KIWIN’S from all the local high schools in Southern California would be decorating floats during the Christmas holiday for the annual Rose Parade – of course that cannot happen in 2020.

So, instead the students and their families can create felt roses as a part of the Rose River Memorial Project. The concept of this project is to create a rose in memory of every person whose life was lost due to Covid-19. The exhibit will travel to many communities to help express the grief of the entire community. Written By Press Release

JAN 16, 1-4 PM | CONCLAVE FEB 6, 1PM

Want to make a difference in our community, playing a greater role in KIWIN’S, and improving the Gator Legacy? Interested in running for Lieutenant Governor or District Board? Do you know where to start, need any guidance?

20

idate

ning Start by filling out the google form (link below) to gain guidance, questions answered, and assistance regarding preparation for running! If you are either interested in running or unsure, it is still REQUIRED that you attend the Candidate Training Conference on January 16 from 1-4 pm. Gain knowledge about preparation for conclave and insight about the responsibility/time commitment each position requires. This form serves to show interest and does not bind you to run. So, if you are interested, MAKE SURE TO FILL OUT THIS FORM by January 18!

rence As well, if there is more than one person per club running for one position, you must hold a club endorsement poll which will be handled by your president or a suitable member who is impartial to the election process if the president is running for office. One important rule is that you may not campaign in any way, shape, or form. This means you cannot make posters or flyers around school/social media. The only way members should know you are running should be the day of the election to eliminate bias. - If this rule is broken, you will be immediately disqualified from running. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Hey, Goldstone!

ATTENTION CLASS OF

2 0 2 1

Just wanted to say that you all have been doing a great job with Kiwanis Family interactions this year. I have attended some of your events like your Kiwanis One Day and you all have been doing incredible jobs. I just wanted to let you know of some opportunities that seniors can take advantage of, specifically, scholarship opportunities. I know all you seniors are busy getting your college application in and are trying to find a way to pay for college. So I wanted to let you know that as paid CNH KIWIN’S members, you qualify for scholarships: Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation and Kiwanis Children's Fund Scholarships. Both of these scholarships are due at the beginning of February so you all still have plenty of time to apply. Many members sadly don't take advantage of this opportunity although many of these organizations usually have more money to give out than what they give to the few who apply like the Kiwanis CNH Foundation awards about $75,000-$100,000 in scholarships each year many members don't end up applying. Thus I suggest that all you seniors apply for these scholarships as you all have a large opportunity to qualify. Soon, the KFAM Committee will be releasing a manual on these two scholarships and we will be going over their requirements, a scholarship application walkthrough, and we will provide some helpful tips to any seniors looking to receive these scholarships. We will be releasing the manual on our CNH KIWIN’S Officer Facebook page and the officer reminder so make sure to keep an eye out for it! I hope you all consider applying and if you have any questions or need any help feel free to reach out to me or anyone else on the Kiwanis Family and International Relations Committee. Good luck to all you applicants!
