6 PORSCHE PARADE

Horizontally Opposed

Welcome to the fourth and final issue of Porsche Parade for 2022.

Porsche have had a huge year with the release of many new models. The standouts are the GT3 RS and the GT4 RS.

The GT4 RS is the car Porsche said it would never build. A car which now challenges the 911 GT3 in many respects, now sharing the same 9000 rpm screamer of an engine! It is the last hurrah and a fitting send off as all 718’s are slated to become fully electric after 2025.

The GT3 RS went down a different route leaving the engine virtually unchanged from the 991.2 and concentrating on aero, and what a magnificent job they have done with its active front and rear spoilers. The other main change is its new double wishbone front end which makes a big difference on track which the car is designed for.

Porsche have wisely made the decision that 500HP is enough for a sports car, something that other manufactures should look at instead of chasing faster Nürburgring lap times which are irrelevant in the real world.

Social sub-committee

With the dawn of electric cars upon us the ICE 0-100kmph times will be decimated. But really, who needs a road car that can do a sub 2 second time.

Porsche has certainly gone down the right road concentrating on developing aero and suspension with the GT3 RS now generating massive amounts of downforce to keep it glued to the road which is where you need to be.

One new model I fear Porsche may have missed the mark on is the new 911 Dakar. A limited run model which seems to be trying to cash in on the rally winning heritage of its 80’s Dakar winning cousin.

I highly doubt we will ever see one of these $500K plus vehicle on the tracks in the high country. The original was purpose built to win rallies, which it did very well but I fear this model more than any other will sadly be collecting dust in a collector’s garage.

Wishing you all a very happy and safe Christmas and a big thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue.

And remember, it’s not how fast you’re going but how fast it feels you’re going that counts!

President’s Report

Welcome to the last issue of Porsche Parade for 2022.

Thank you for electing me as President of your Club for a second term at the AGM in October. It is an honour. I congratulate our newly elected and re-elected Officers and General Committee members. We will continue to deliver a high quality and varied program in the year ahead. Planning for 2023 is well underway and has been for some time.

There are reports of some of our major events, the AGM in October, the Annual Gala Dinner and Awards Night, and the Presidents Day at Sandown in this issue. A noteworthy event was the assembly of forty Taycans at Sandown on Presidents Day. Congratulations to Russell and the organising team. After delivering an impressive Social, Competition and Register program our volunteers deserve a well-earned rest!

Our broad range of events caters to a wide variety of members with different expectations and opinions. We hold ourselves to account following each event by seeking feedback. I assure you that your feedback is reported to, considered, and used as a basis for future planning by our committees and organisers.

At the AGM we reported that members’ funds (net assets or reserves) were around $365,000 at the end of FY22. On setting the appropriate level for reserves, the club prudently measures how long we could operate under very severe economic conditions. This is a generally accepted measure in business.

We measure against this each year when we set our budget. The test is three times labour costs, or twice the costs of labour, administration, and Porsche Parade. Against this measure the club has appropriate, but not excessive, reserves. The club has a clear and prudent strategy to ensure that it operates sustainably into the future.

On behalf of the Club, I thank the members of our administrative team, Carly, Lisa, and Kellie, for the tremendous support they provide our members and our Club. Members regularly comment to me how wonderful our administrative team is and how lucky we are to have them.

I also thank the contributors to, and advertisers in our club magazine. ‘Porsche Parade’ is the envy of many clubs due to the very high standard we achieve, and its unique and engaging content, principally provided by our own members. Support from advertisers allows us to deliver such a high-quality magazine and I urge you to favour the advertisers when you can. Feel free to mention your association with the club!

My thanks go to Andrew Smith (Competition Director) and each member of the Competition Committee and Marshals crew; Clyde White (Social Director) and each member of the Social Committee; Paul Sbrissa (Registers Director) and all our Register Captains. As a Club we are powered by volunteers and these great members sure do generate a lot of power!

Once again, we have appreciated the support of Porsche Cars Australia and each of the Porsche Centres Melbourne, Brighton, and Doncaster. We look forward to continuing our strong relationship with them in 2023.

I wish you and your families the very best for the holiday season. Please take care and join me in looking forward to the New Year!

Social Reflections

The last three months of our calendar year are full of social activities and I extend my thanks to our very hard working Social Committee for their commitment, support and valuable time to keep the events progressing, for our club.

In planning our 2023 calendar year, we will have more ladies and midweek runs to accommodate the input I have received at the time of writing this article. One event which was highly popular, with positive feedback and booked out in a few minutes, with a waiting list as long as your arm was the PCM Workshop Tour. This will return in 2023, once planning is confirmed with PCM.

I would like to explore our members’ views on organising a Car Display / Family day picnic. If you have a view or wish to have input please email me.

The Lang Lang Experience was a wonderful event, with a return in 2023, albeit with a reduced number. Keep a look out for the flyer and mitigate your disappointment.

Unfortunately it was with much disappointment we cancelled the Champagne Lunch at PCB, due to lack of numbers. The event would have been very successful, but for the date picked. Sunday prior to Melbourne cup was a long weekend and our members had prior commitments and long weekends away.

The AGM/ Club Night at PCM was very good. There was an emphasis on socialising, resulting in members catching up with colleagues over good food and drinks. A number of members gave me their feedback and expectations on Social activities, which is always welcome.

The annual Gala Dinner and Awards Night at PCM, was contemporary, with the entertainment surpassing all expectations. I have forwarded links by email to all members, for the performances on the night. Please take time out to view and enjoy.

The Club invited guests Daniel and Constanze Schmollinger, Daniel being CEO & Managing Director Porsche Cars Australia. I requested Daniel to pen a few words for our magazine and the following are his thoughts:

“Owning a Porsche is not just about owning a car, it is not just a means of transportation, it is very often fulfilling a life-long dream and the way owning a Porsche makes you feel – a statement of achievement.

At the same time, it is about becoming part of a family of likeminded people. This is what makes Porsche different and what we have seen for almost 75 years, across the globe.

Porsche Clubs are playing a pivotal role in providing a platform for these independent, yet likeminded people to share and live their Porsche passion.

Last Saturday, I had the chance to attend the annual Porsche Club Victoria Gala Dinner and Presentation Night. A wonderful evening with fellow Porsche enthusiasts. An evening with

meaningful conversation not only about Porsche cars but also about how our club members came to buying a Porsche and what drives their passion for the brand. It was truly inspiring!

Thanks for having me!”

There are a further four events to follow at date of writing this article, Presidents Day which should be wonderful, Wine and Food appreciation dinner, taste buds are salivating, Last Blast Run Eildon will be a corker and the reliable Coffee Run always great.

I consider “we (social committee) can always do better”, with the input of club members. Please give us your feedback.

Have a wonderful and happy Christmas with your families, stay safe and I look forward to catching up either at our remaining social events or in the New Year.

Hi everyone

Since our last meeting, Competition have held their final competitive event for the season, and boy there were some results that came down to the wire for the end of year trophies.

Whilst I won’t reveal anything here, these will all come out at the Annual Dinner this Saturday evening, but to whet your appetite there were mere seconds deciding some catagories.

The actual event turned out to be a cracker even though overnight showers had the track a little damp in the first session. With a southerly breeze and a little sunshine the track quickly created a dry running line which made life a little simpler.

A great turn out allowed us to run 4 competition groups plus 10 in entrée which gave us a great field.

Manny Mezzasalma was the fastest man on the day with the son and father duo of Jamie and Greg Lovett taking out second and third respectively. Some quick genes in that family!!!!

With Bill Toohey away on a well earned break Peter Jordan stepped up to the plate to take out A class with Guy Lavoipierre second and Tim Asome third. Well done to Tim who is in his full year in class.

Danny “The Jokester” Loypur headed up B class hotly followed by Daniel Reynolds and Andrew Lipman.

Grant S pipped Coxy and Cameron G in Classic class

From Pit Lane

Stefan once again headed GT class from Adam Stafford and Rob Love

The wily old fox Fitzy has still got it winning Modified from Michael Jenkins and Greg Muller.

Open was lead by Jamie as mentioned above with Simon Zettl and Andrew Smith separated by only 0.0068 for second and third.

All in all a fantastic day to finish of the 2022 season

Our thanks as always goes to the Flaggies and marshals and officials who without them, we couldn’t run our events.

The 2023 track calendar is just being finalised so we should have that out very soon.

Off-road sports car with the genes of a winner: The new Porsche

Dakar

14 PORSCHE PARADE
911
Article and Photos by: Porsche Newsroom 16th November 2022

Porsche is celebrating an extraordinary world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show: the new Porsche 911 Dakar is just as comfortable off-road as it is on the highway. Limited to just 2,500 examples, this exclusive model doesn’t just demonstrate the all-but-limitless possibilities of the Porsche 911 concept: it also evokes the first overall victory by Porsche in the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally. This momentous win also marked the birth of all-wheel drive in the Porsche 911. This is why the new 911 Dakar is also offered with an optional Rallye Design Package, reminiscent of that iconic winning car.

Stuttgart/Australia. The first striking detail of the Porsche 911 Dakar is its ground clearance, which is approximately 50 mm higher than that of a 911 Carrera with sports suspension. And the standard lift system can raise the front and rear ends an additional 30 mm. Its ground clearance and ramp angle rival those of conventional SUVs. The lift system is not designed merely for driving over obstacles at low speeds, but is rather an integral part of the re-tuned suspension. The ‘high level’ setting is available for ambitious off-road adventures

Complementing the car’s sporty off-road attributes are specially developed Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tyres (245/45 ZR 19 at the front and 295/40 ZR 20 at the rear). The chunky tread pattern is 9 mm deep and the reinforced sidewalls and the threads consist of two carcass plies. All this makes the tyres of the Porsche 911 Dakar ideal even for challenging terrain and they are highly cut-resistant. Summer tyres are available as an option, also with two carcass plies in addition to the standard all-terrain tyres.

Commanding power on all surfaces

The three-litre biturbo six-cylinder with 480 PS (353 kW) and a maximum torque of 570 Newton metres delivers superior performance with a compelling boxer sound. The new sports car is capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

As standard, the engine comes with an eight-speed PDK and Porsche all-wheel drive. The standard equipment also includes rearaxle steering, the engine mounts from the 911 GT3, and PDCC anti-roll stabilisation. The interplay of all the components results in the 911 Dakar being just as dynamic on sand and loose surfaces as it is on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Its maximum off-road performance is also thanks in part to two new driving modes, which are selectable via the rotary switch on the steering wheel. Rallye mode is ideal for loose, uneven surfaces and features rear-focused all-wheel drive. In Off-road mode the high clearance is activated automatically. This mode is designed for maximum traction on difficult terrain and on sand. Both of the new driving modes also feature the new Rallye Launch Control, which enables impressive acceleration on loose surfaces.

16 PORSCHE PARADE

Optionally available with a roof basket or roof tent

Additional characteristic features of the 911 Dakar include the newly developed, fixed lightweight rear spoiler made of CarbonFibreReinforced Plastic (CFRP), and the CFRP front luggage compartment lid with striking air outlets taken from the 911 GT3. There are also standard off-road details such as the red aluminium towing lugs at the front and back, the widened wheel wells and sills and the stainless steel protective elements on the front, rear and side sills. The side air intakes on the redesigned front end are also protected against flying rocks by stainless steel grilles.

The roof of the Porsche 911 Dakar features a visible 12-volt power outlet for the headlights of the optional roof rack that is available via Porsche Tequipment. With a capacity of 42 kilograms, the rack can accommodate rallying accessories such as fuel and water canisters, folding shovels and traction boards without any problems. A roof tent is also available for the 911 Dakar via Porsche Tequipment.

In the interior, the 911 Dakar underscores its sporting ambitions with standard full bucket seats and the omission of the rear seats. Lightweight glass and a lightweight battery reduce its weight further, enabling the Porsche 911 Dakar to weigh in at just 1,605 kg – a mere 10 kg heavier than the 911 Carrera 4 GTS with PDK.

A defining feature of the Dakar interior is the standard Race-Tex surfaces with decorative stitching in Shade Green. Exclusively for the 911 Dakar is the optional exterior finish in Shade Green metallic.

Rally Design Package with styling that echoes that of the 1984 Paris-Dakar-winning rally car

The foundation of the optional Rallye Design Package is the two-tone finish in White/Gentian Blue Metallic. This combination of two-tone paintwork and wrapping on a standard model is a first for Porsche. On the side of the vehicle, the customer can choose an individual race number between 1 and 999. In addition to decorative stripes in red and gold, the 911 Dakar with the Rallye Design Package – the look of which reprises the winning car from the 1984 Rally Dakar – also features a ‘Roughroads’ logo on the doors. The term is a registered trademark and reflects the concept of the 911 Dakar and its suitability for driving off-road. Optionally available is the Rallye Sport Package with roll cage, six-point seat belts and fire extinguisher. Customers of the 911 Dakar can exclusively order the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 ‒ 911 Dakar or the Chronograph 1 ‒ 911 Dakar Rallye Design Edition to go with their car. For the first time, the housing is made of particularly scratch-resistant and light titanium carbide.

In Australia, the 911 Dakar will be additionally equipped only with the tyre sealant and electric air compressor as standard due to its high global standard equipment load. The new Porsche 911 Dakar is available for order now and starts at $491,400**. The Rallye Design Package costs $54,730**. Australian deliveries are expected to commence from the second half of 2023.

President’s Day

20th November 2022

With the end of the competition season put to bed and all the major trophies awarded to the winners, President’s Day is the ideal opportunity to relax and enjoy taking friends and family out for a few laps around the Sandown circuit.

The day began under gloomy skies after a dumping of overnight rain, but with a stiff southerly breeze and the sun trying to poke its face through the clouds, it wasn’t going to be too long before the track started to dry out.

64 entered cars and drivers were on hand and after the briefing all of us formed a guard of honour to pay our respects to our dear colleague Linley Baxter who recently passed away. Linley’s wife Helen and his son Simon drove their red 991 through the applauding crowd and took Linley’s car on one last lap of the circuit. A fitting tribute to a great clubman.

The first passenger session was a little sketchy, with water running over the track at a couple of points, but with the skill of our drivers, everything seemed to stay ontrack for most of the morning sessions.

Over the lunch break, the club was able to support Porsche Cars Australia in organising the largest gathering of Taycans assembled in Australia. After the photo opportunity was complete, they all headed off on a “parade lap” behind Will Darvall’s 550 Spyder pacecar. We were also able to offer a couple of parade laps for our social members

again behind a pacecar. Please refer to their full story later in the magazine.

During the lunch break a short downpour had the Clerk of Course declare a “wet track” which sent all of those group 1 slick tyre cars scurrying off to grab their wets. However, after the rain the sun re-appeared which changed the mind of the Clerk of Course and he in his wisdom changed the track to “dry” (well semi dry anyway) which again had all the group 1 cars changing back to the slicks!!!

As the afternoon progressed, we were lucky with the weather and no further rain effected us. In fact the track dried up quite quickly and the passengers had a great experience of how our cars can perform on a dry track (at 80% of course!!!)

The weather Gods smiled on us and we were able to complete the afternoon before another front dumped a tonne of rain on us just as we were all cleaning out the garages and getting cars on trailers. A quick refreshment and a bite to eat rounded out the day with our friends and families.

Another successful President’s Day.

Special thanks to our marshals and flaggies for again standing out in some pretty ordinary weather, but the biggest thanks of the day must go to the President’s wife for the time and effort it took to man the sign on desk ALL DAY. With over 380 passengers rides given over the day, Caroline often had a queue of people

waiting to sign in and get their wristband. Oh the joys of being the President’s wife!!!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on the Competition Committee for their assistance this year, especially our President Mark, Andrew Bonwick for his wisdom and insight, Andy Hall and Phil Treloar for looking after Entrée class, Pete Harrison and Tony Carolan as ex Competition Directors and last, but by no means least, Richard Catchlove, the Competition Secretary with the best legs in the club (not bad in a short skirt either!!) who I have enjoyed working closely with this year.

Our first event is scheduled and locked in for Phillip Island on Saturday January 21st. Unfortunately, our preferred date in Feb was taken from us so there weren’t a lot of alternatives. Next years calendar is still not finalised as some dates we thought had secured are now hanging due to major track works occurring at Phillip Island to bring the track up to new FIA standards (mainly for Moto GP), major works at Caulfield horse racing track, which means more horse racing at Sandown, and an International event now scheduled for the long weekend in June at The Bend where we were pencilled in. Once we can obtain firm dates we will advise by email and on the club website.

I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

For 2022, that’s all From Pit Lane.

President’s DaySandown Experience

Sunday 20th November 2022

Well Sunday 20th November arrived and we didn’t know quite what to expect from the man upstairs ….. the lead up to our day had been all over the place with brilliant sunshine one day, and torrential rain the next.

However Sunday dawned as basically a fine day with a few threatening clouds providing an occasional rain shower but not enough to dampen our day. Following on from last year’s very successful President’s Day – Sandown Experience we decided to run this event again, but this year we added a little twist.

With the assistance of Porsche Cars Australia, and our three Melbourne Porsche Dealerships we decided to invite every Melbourne Porsche Taycan Purchaser to join us at President’s Day to show them what the Porsche Club of Victoria is all about, and to provide them the opportunity to feel and experience what it’s like to participate in a Club Track Day.

On seeing the number of RSVP’s being accepted it soon became obvious that we were going to have a record on our hands as over 40 x Taycans attended our day, with some already having joined the club to be part of our growing EV Register.

Situated at Sandown International Motor Raceway our day included …

• New Porsche Vehicle Display provided by Porsche Centre Melbourne, Porsche Centre Brighton and Porsche Centre Doncaster.

• Viewing the Largest Single Display of Porsche Taycans in the Southern Hemisphere.

• Gourmet BBQ Lunch with unlimited drinks package (provided by Fabulous Catering)

• Marquee with tables, seating and market umbrellas provided.

• Music provided during the lunch break

• Escorted Pit Walks

• Parade Laps on the magnificent Sandown circuit (speed limited behind a pace car)

• Participation in Passenger Laps around Sandown with a Competition Member

• Joining fellow club members, and generally having fun at our final social event for 2022.

Our Day commenced around 10.00am with well over 200 Members and invited Taycan Attendees arriving at the circuit, and after grabbing a coffee from the food van at the circuit, most visited the viewing areas to watch the morning passenger lap session taking place on the circuit.

At 12.00pm a mandatory Taycan Attendee driver’s briefing was held in the pits after which owners got into their vehicles ready for their parade lap. Once everyone was ready to go drivers started their engines (or should I say turned on the Go Switch in their Taycan) and were directed by club officials down through the dummy grid where they were met with our pace car (Will Darvall’s magnificent 550 Spyder Replica – provided to us by Barbara Darvall), and ably driven by Former Club President, Hall of Fame Recipient and Life Member – Michael Browning who had flown down from Queensland to be part of our day.

Michael then led forty of Porsche’s latest EV vehicles (the Taycan) out onto the main straight of Sandown leading them down to the start finish line in front of the grandstand where they were arranged into thirteen rows of three, with one single vehicle in the last row.

On returning to the pits the Taycan Owners parked their vehicles and proceed to the Lunch Marquee to enjoy their Gourmet BBQ.

Next on the day were the PCV Members who had indicated when booking that they wished to take part in supervised Parade Laps of the Sandown Circuit, once again led by Michael Browning in Will Darvall’s 550 Spyder Replica. On completion of their laps members returned to the pits, and also came across to the event marquee where they joined with the Taycan Attendees and other members for lunch.

BBQ Bites Menu:

• Charred grilled lamb cutlets, pistachio salsa verde (gf)

• Pork and fennel chipolata sausages, peach chutney

• Garlic and lemon BBQ king prawns with lemon aioli (gf)

• Chermoula marinated chicken skewers (gf)

• Chargrilled vegetable and tofu brochettes, chimichurri (vegan, gf, df)

• Wagyu cheeseburger, dill cucumber, SBR sauce, pickled ranch mayo

• Slider. Middle eastern falafel, halloumi, harissa and tzatziki (v)

Assorted Salads:

• Fresh bread basket (include some gluten free rolls) 2.50 175.00

Unlimited Soft Drink Package

• Variety of soft drinks - Coke, Diet Coke, Lemon, Lemonade, Orange and Water, Capi sparkling drinks

Following lunch members and guests were able to join club members who were providing passenger laps on the day, and the queues lined up for these kept drivers out on the track well into the late afternoon.

PCV Gala Dinner & Awards Night at Porsche Centre Melbourne

The opportunity to appreciate fine dining during some truly remarkable and unique Porsche vehicles, steeped in history and full of fantasy. The setting, resembling a fashionista runway, through the very heart of the Porsche Centre Melbourne workshop, where our dreams and treasured vehicles are cared for and lovingly looked after. As the saying goes, the ‘workshop’ was ‘clean enough to eat off the floor’; a privilege our members thoroughly enjoyed.

The evening commenced with the serving of scrumptious canapes and fabulous beverage offerings with the members mingling in the service driveway at PCM (undercover of course). Many stories of the exciting races during the past season as well as challenges for the coming year were overheard; it should be an interesting year next year.

After an absence of a few years without the opportunity to host this premier event, the attendees were bursting with enthusiasm and relishing the opportunity to see both old and new faces. Many new members were in attendance together with a mix of members of all ages, celebrating the year that was. It was fabulous to see members mingling and sharing stories of their favourite runs throughout the year and socialised in a very refined yet relaxed setting.

Following the canapes, the guests moved into the marvellous space with long tables spanning the length of the workshop. An enviable collection of Porsches on display, illuminated amongst the hoists and a setting every enthusiast would desire to be in.

The MC, the ever entertaining and extremely gifted tenor James Egglestone commenced the evening with a humorous introduction to the night, welcoming all guests and continuing with an amusing rendition of Grease Lighting and Nessun Dorma.

An eloquent speech by the President Mark Horton Andrews extended the welcome to all and kicked off the evening in style. Dinner was then served with an abundance of delicious offerings and accompanying beverages was enjoyed by all.

Post the serving of the extravagant spread, the awards presentations commenced with the worthy and illustrious winners presented with a stunning trophy to reward the heroics of the season past. Worthy recipients were Motorsport Club Champion Daniel Reynolds, Life Member to the much admired highly respected and major contributor to the Club Tony Carolan and the inaugural Darvall Club Member of the Year posthumously to Linley Baxter. Two further major motorsport award winners

were Adam Stafford for Outright Champion and James Moyle for Rookie of the Year.

One of the many highlights of the evening was the first class entertainment provided by the world-renowned Patrick Roberts who has shared the stage with many famous performers including Sting and Tommy Emmanuel in concert. The audience was mesmerised by the beauty of the sounds created by the violinist and the myriad of songs performed.

Clyde White rounded off the night by acknowledging our guests Daniel and Constanze Schmollinger, Piero Pellegrini and Giles Hunter. He sincerely thanked Geoffrey Mould on behalf of the club for his tireless work in bringing all aspects of this event to fruition and personally, gave heartfelt thanks and bouquets to Carly Pasco and Lisa Gillespie in recognition for their efforts behind the scenes of PCV.

Clyde further thanked Porsche Centre Melbourne and particularly Kate Holcombe and Piero Pellegrini for their support and making the workshop available to the club. Piero addressed the guests and drew a door prize of a Taycan for the weekend. The winner was a delighted new club member Pauline Healy.

We look forward to another eventful year, creating lifelong memories, competition and fun in 2023.

PCV Experience Day at Lang Lang Proving Ground

Saturday 8th October 2022

“That was fun!” Pretty much sums up the day the Porsche Club Victoria members had at the Lang Lang VinFast proving grounds.

36 PORSCHE PARADE

For myself, the day started with a small detour to pick up new member Justin Bradley whose own vehicle decided it wasn’t interested in a day at the Proving Ground and would rather spend time in a workshop. From there we made our way to Lang Lang. Running ahead of schedule we decide to make a quick coffee stop detour. Seems members Sita Hoejlund and partner David Erbs had the same idea. A relaxing coffee at Country Grind Café ensued where we discovered Sita had only recently taken delivery of her 982 Boxster Spyder. Congratulations Sita on a great purchase.

After coffee we headed to the PG where we were greeted by a truly varied mix of vehicles (some from a more southern European heritage) lining up at the entrance to the proving ground. It was clear members were eagerly awaiting to discover what lay behind the closed doors of what has always been, a secretive facility.

The time finally came and, in convoy, we drove past the gates and into the proving ground. We headed directly to the skid pan area where the welcome photos were taken. From there we all headed into the chalet and were treated to a fantastic talk by Henry Weinlich (a former Holden employee and volunteer on the day). Henry covered the history of the proving ground and provided the members with a small window into what it takes to design and validate a vehicle for production.

With the introductions complete we headed back out onto the skid pad for some controlled handling exercises. After lunch we split into two groups and drove our vehicles around the same ride/handling and high speed loop roads used by hundreds of past Holden models and current VinFast models.

Some members were even brave enough to test (very briefly of course) the no hands needed phenomenon on the high banking of the high speed loop. It is a truly unnerving experience and yet fascinating at the same time. The day concluded with all vehicles gathered on the high speed loop for a truly unique (static of course) photo experience.

Like all events it’s the people behind the scenes making it happen that are the unsung heroes. The Porsche Club Victoria would like to thank the team from Lang Lang Proving Ground; Darren, Henry, Andrew, Gary, David and Chris, all of whom volunteered their time to host us. Personally I would also like to thank Justin Bradley whom assisted me throughout the day and took some amazing photos and videos.

Lastly I would like to credit Linley Baxter whom was the original ideas man behind this event. If it wasn’t for his random phone call one day asking me if I knew anyone at the Lang Lang Proving Grounds this event may have never eventuated. Thank you Linley, as you predicted, it was a great day.

This Coffee Run was a little different in that it included fellow Porsche Club members from Western Australia who were visiting Melbourne, so PCV arranged a courtesy Coffee Run along some of Victoria’s picturesque countryside.

The run planned was easy to follow and enjoy ensuring we didn’t lose any of our guests and for that matter any PCV members. Kon made sure the roads were Porsche friendly except for the unexpected pot holes towards the end heading back to Melbourne.

The meeting point was at BP Outbound Calder Park which PCWA members found without difficulty. There was a nice selection of 15 Porsches lined up from both Clubs. After our meet and greet Kon Gogos got everyone together for the briefing before starting off on what turned out a sunny and inviting day.

Before starting off it was agreed since Kon planned the run he should also lead, but also have a PCV member at the rear so our PCWA guests were able to follow without taking any detours by mistake.

We started heading west with Kon in the lead through Diggers Rest, Toolern Vale and Coimadai passing Merrimu Reservoir which looked pretty full. Heading north to Gisborne along some spectacular scenery on both sides which I’m sure our guests would have appreciated.

Going through Gisborne and Riddells Creek avoiding some unexpected pot holes turned south heading back to Melbourne. From there it was an easy drive as we went through the outskirts of Sunbury passing several new estates which meant there were single lanes all the way to Bulla. Kon decided to show our PCWA visitors what a Melbourne new housing estate looked like, I’m sure it was appreciated!

From Bulla it was a leisurely drive passing the top end of Tullamarine Airport along Tullamarine Freeway to our final destination at an Essendon Cafe. Over an espresso and some pastries we got to know more about our PCWA guests. It was mentioned that PCV runs are much better organised and asked if they can have a copy of our runs notes for their future Club runs.

All too soon our guests started heading back to their hotel to get ready for the next part of their trip to Tasmania. Overall it was a very pleasant and relaxing run which all members enjoyed, driving our Porsches along some of Victoria’s country side.

This was our second visit to Sandown this year and last competition event for the year.

Due to the rain overnight, I arrived a bit apprehensive. The wet looking track didn’t help and then arriving at my garage to find yesterday’s competitors had left their cars in our section of garages with the doors locked and no keys in sight. It looked like it was going to be one of those days. Finally, though the keys were found and the cars were moved, some driven, a coupled pushed. We were finally able to get ready just in time for the drivers briefing.

It was a large turnout as usual at Sandown with 4 competition groups and 10 in entrée.

Entrée is the group for beginner drivers/ racers who want to test what it is like to do motor sport or just see how their car goes on a racetrack. It is a great initiative with an experienced driver mentoring the entree driver to understand the circuit and what it is like to do motor sport. It has been very popular as the club membership keeps growing.

Sandown is a great track which I enjoy, maybe because I have been here so many times. It is basically two long straights with some wiggly bits in between.

For the first session the track started damp but it quickly dried out and grip was better than expected. Going off the shiny stuff though was not advisable as the grass areas were more marsh than grass.

Unfortunately, we had a couple of incidents for the day with Richard Thompson having a cooling hose fail spectacularly causing the 2 cars behind him to slide off the track with one getting stuck in the wet stuff. Also we had two incidents at turn 4 with Mark Callaghan going into the wall and later Jo Haddad hitting the wall in the same spot. Lucky nobody was hurt but couldn’t say the same for their cars.

Manny Mezzaasalma in Open class was fastest on the day doing a time of 72.17 seconds, which was nearly a second clear of Jamie Lovett. The other results on the day were:

A Class

Peter Jordan in his 981 Cayman S finished first, well ahead of Guy Laviopierre and Tim Asome in Cayman’s.

B Class

Danny Loypur in a Cayman 987 was first. He beat Daniel Reynolds in a 911 Carrerra and Andrew Lipman in a Boxster.

C Class

Grant Stephenson beat Cameron Goodyear both in 911 SC who is still getting his touch back after being away from this class for the last couple of years.

D Class

Philip Cox in a 911 SC beat Garry Voges in his 944 S2. Both C & D classes are well down in numbers compared to previous years as competitors migrate to newer machines and put their old beloved cars out to pasture.

GT Class

Stefan Wojciechowski in his GT3 RS finished ahead of Adam Stafford and Rob Love also in GT3 RS’s. With a large

number of competitors, and a number of subcategories it will be interesting to see who finishes on top at year end.

Cup Class

As mentioned previously Manny Mezzasalma in his 991 Cup Car came first ahead of Andy Hall and Alan Din in their 997 Cup Cars.

MO Class

Porsche racing veteran Peter Fitzgerald in a Cayman S finished ahead of Michael Jenkins in a Boxster S and Greg Muller in a Cayman S.

Open Class

Jamie Lovett in his 991 GT3 Cup finished ahead of Simon Zettl and Andrew Smith who were separated by 0.0068 secs

Finally, I’d like to thank all the volunteer Officials, Marshals, Scrutineers, and timing who make these events possible and allow us competitors to go have a great day. Also like to thank Emergency Response Services and WAP Motorsport who are there when things go wrong which sadly happened.

See you all next year at Philip Island.

On Tuesday, 18 October 2022 PCV held its 47th Annual General Meeting at the iconic Porsche Centre Melbourne followed by a Social Club Night evening with over 176 members attending.

The AGM commenced at 6.30 pm after Secretary Neville Sampson confirmed that a quorum was present. President Mark Horton Andrews commenced proceedings welcoming and thanking members for their attendance and following the confirmation of the minutes of the previous AGM, Mark and the Treasurer David Mallinson delivered their reports to members.

In his Treasurer's Report David Mallinson advised that in line with the Committee's decision to subsidise more events in financial

year 2022 to compensate the reduced events over the last two years due to covid restrictions, that the Club reported an operating loss for the year. He went on to overview that the Club remains in a healthy position with increased memberships and a healthy balance sheet that carried reserves in excess of our minimum target.

In financial year 2022, our total Membership was 2,126, a net increase of 147 from financial year 2021 and with an annual renewal percentage above 90%. The primary membership exceeded 1,000 for the sixth time with a record of 1,324.

David said that the General Committee would continue to review the club’s financial

position and set Budgets to ensure the Club’s reserves exceeded the minimum target.

In closing, David announced that after presenting six Annual Reports, he was stepping down as Treasurer and that Flavio Lacota had been nominated for election later in the meeting. David also acknowledged the diligent work by our Club Administrators Carly Pasco and Lisa Gillespie both of whom had assisted him greatly.

Following the presentation of the President’s and Treasurer’s Reports, the Annual Report of the Club was adopted and office holders along with general committee members were elected. Thanks were offered on behalf of the Club to our administrative staff before the AGM was closed.

The following General Committee members were declared elected:

Ron Widdison, Garry Saber, Cameron Goodyear, Clyde White, Andrew Smith, Paul Sbrissa, Russell Sturzaker and David Mallinson.

Both the President’s and Treasurer's Reports are included in full in the Minutes of the meeting, which are available on the Club Website, under the About the Club tab, and then under Annual Reports.

Following the AGM, Russell Sturzaker warmly welcomed attendees and acknowledged Past President's Michael O'Brien, Tony Carolan, Peter Harrison and Andrew Bonwick who were present at the meeting.

Russell also introduced new members Justin Bradley, Gary Campbell, John Haralabakos, Peggy and Robert Padanyi, Iral Scholten-Castillo and Rachel Brisbane.

A buffet dinner was then served with tasty choices of poached Tasmanian salmon, slow-cooked beef brisket, chicken with piperade sauce, a gourmet salad bar and freshly baked bread rolls (with a gluten-free option.) All were accompanied by a great selection of beverages.

Following Dinner, the President spoke briefly to note the upcoming President's Day at Sandown, in November 2022. In particular he noted that new Frontal Head Restraint rules will apply and that this will be the first President’s Day to which the changed rules apply!

Clyde White then highlighted coming events.

Clyde advised that the rising cost of catering at events, cafes and restaurants had unfortunately impacted on the costs of organising social events. A fact he encouraged our members to please take into consideration and understand, when viewing advertised events for registration. However, while these factors will affect our future events, the aim was to ensure members receive quality within budget!

He said the Social Committee motto was, “ to always do better !"

In closing, Clyde thanked Russell Sturzaker praising his 'Midas Touch' in organising the AGM Club Night. He then acknowledged the attendance and assistance of Social Committee members Anna Cook, Alvaro Del Gallo, Vickie Morris, Geoffrey Mould, Stephen Lofthouse, Kon Gogos, Werner Engel and Vice President Melanie Treloar.

Clyde then thanked and acknowledged the support of Piero Pellegrini, Kate Holcombe and Porsche Centre Melbourne for hosting our Club Night.

The Club extends its thanks to Fabulous Catering for their commitment to quality and service, and to Club Sponsor Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre.

PCV at MotorClassica

On Sunday 9th October 13 cars from PCV participated in the Marque Park display at MotorClassica on the forecourt of the iconic Royal Exhibition building. It has been 3 years since the last MotorClassica and classic car enthusiasts were out in force indulging their passion for all things with 4 wheels (and a few with 2 or 3).

In the PCV area we organised a display of old and modern Porsche classics, including a 991 GT3 RS, GT4, 911 Turbo, 911 Cab, 911 Coupe, 365 in bare metal, and a good representation of the Torque Tube cars including a 968 Cab, 944 Turbo Cab, 968 Turbo RS, 944 Turbo Coupe, 968 GTS and 928 S.

Inside the main hall were 100’s of other rare and exotic cars, including a Ferrari 75th Anniversary display, an Icon's of Speed display which included a broad age range of cars from a 1904 Napier L48 Samson thorough to a Bugatti Veyron. Porsche was also well represented with a special display of rare and desirable models. Other celebration displays included 60 Years of Shelby and 110 Years of Bertone.

If you’ve not been to MotorClassica then make sure you visit next year. It is by far the best classic car event in the Southern Hemisphere. Thanks to club members Brett Nolan, Alex Danielsen, Adam Stafford, Jim Bradley, Justin Reed, Scott Brenchley, Marilyn Baker and Phillip Robinson for providing their cars and their assistance on the day.

Last Run to Eildon Boat Club

58 PORSCHE PARADE
Jan Mason and Mark Campbell Alf and Gay Carrigan

Iguess you can call it post mid-life crisis where I decided to swap my very ordinary serviceable day car for a Porsche Boxster.

Hubby Mark and I have been into classic sports cars for many years but we decided that the time had come for a change and I wanted to enjoy a few more creature comforts.

After purchasing the Boxster at Porsche Centre Brighton in midSeptember we decided to join PCV as we found that the club runs many and varied outings and activities that we felt we would love to be a part of.

Our first outing was the Last Run to Eildon on 27th November with lunch at the Boat Club. We arrived nice and early at Porsche Centre Melbourne and joined the small but growing group of fellow travelers.

As we are very new to the club and hadn’t yet received our membership cards (only the lanyards) we made our own little cards saying “Hi, I’m new. Jan” and “Hi, I’m new. Mark”. This seemed to work a treat, with people noticing that we were new and straight away joined us in their conversations and made us feel very welcome. We chatted to a range of different people and relaxed into the inclusive atmosphere.

After a detailed briefing from our run organizers it was off through the northern suburbs and into the countryside to Whittlesea and Flowerdale to our first stop at Yea for morning tea at one of the many lovely bakeries. It was also a great opportunity to meet and chat with more members (our little name cards were still working well) and everyone we spoke to was very welcoming and helpful. We even sorted out how to activate the daytime running lights on the car with some very helpful advice.

Soon it was back in the car and off to Eildon along some fabulous roads where I hope I wasn’t too slow for those following. Arriving in Eildon it was such a treat to see the lake at 100% capacity and soon we arrived at the Eildon Boat Club for lunch. Very soon we were chatting to Clyde White and many others before tucking in to a beautiful grazing table for entree and then a wonderful main meal plus dessert. No lack of food here!

After lunch we headed off on our return journey with Mark having a drive and both of us talking about how much we had enjoyed the day, the car, the drive and the people we had met and socialised with. Without preaching to the converted it really is truly marvelous to be included in a like-minded group with a common interest in their chosen vehicles and a desire to enjoy social events such as this one. We are both looking forward to many more such experiences with the Porsche Club Victoria for many years to come.

Modern 911 & GT3/ RS Register Run to Pier 35 Port Melbourne

An early Sunday morning meet and on this run also joined by the GT3/RS group with quite a selection of Porsches. As cloud cover broke across this riverside suburban commune, both the literal and proverbial fog lifted to reveal a melange of modern with a few older Porsche 911s, jutting keenly nearby a motley crew of club enthusiasts and their invited guests. A full turnout for today’s enterprise, as the route map was read aloud by Kon, the crowd stood strong in the emergent morning sun, full of anticipation for shared roads ahead.

Our first stop Wallan. Quickly, amongst a small group of breakaways, we separated from the starting peloton, slipstreaming our way through Research, then to Kangaroo Ground and onwards. The tight mountainous roads, quickly drying out from the previous night’s rains, were still damp in parts, providing hints of wheel slip and exhilaration to boot. These roads are made for stirred driving, the unrelenting threat of even the slightest false step, providing the starkest contrast to the forced couch incursions of yesteryears lockdowns (this is Victoria after all).

Soon after, our small breakaway group fell off the approved course, an inevitable happenstance on leisurely club drives of the sort this was. But we weren’t lost—and besides, today’s purpose was much less about reaching a certain destination than it was about sharing an experience. So what then was this day really about? Well, for me, I was riding shotgun with my older brother (though blessed I am, it’s his car.). We used the opportunity to engage in deep discussion. We covered many things, we talked about life, a bit about business, we reflected on the mixed lives of our Mum and Dad before us, about the value of being positive and adventurous, and taking risks, about having an even better future despite the many blessings we and our combined families

enjoy in the present. We talked about becoming better people, and we agreed that doing more for others in our lives was a shared hallmark of our life’s better purpose. We just talked.

A quick café stop at Wallan, a couple of espressos later, we then found ourselves streaking through the Macedon Ranges. Out there, it seemed most of the world was put out to pasture, one particular lone group of trees contrasted with vast and lush hinterland, as Hanging Rock towered imposingly in the distant Woodend surrounds.

With some 150 kilometres (that’s 93 miles) of Victoria’s finest and not-so-finest country behind us, I can happily report we did eventually find our way to Pier 35 where we were greeted with rows of long tables, a strong easterly skidding off the Yarra and set cutlery at the ready. There, the group broke bread together and we all exchanged many more stories. One particular member described a recent career change, lining up with so many recent accounts within the ‘Great Resignation’ trend. Another spoke of days gone by in clubs involving more modest vehicles. And another expressed immense pleasure in a particular set of forged monoblock, custom machined wheels finished in gold, yet another took interest in bespoke suspension sets. This was a car club event after all.

And so we had our fill, exchanged our goodbyes and back on the road we went, home the next stop. As we ruminated over the day’s events, we reflected some more about what this drive was all about. For us, it was about manifesting an entrepreneurial attitude, harbouring an optimistic will towards situations with uncertain outcomes, it was about cultivating a prosperous mindset matched by a generosity of spirit. Much more than road

navigation, today’s journey was about driving our lives forward, venturing unknown roads whilst being confident of coming out the other side richer and wiser for the experience. We went somewhere together, but nowhere in particular enjoying our Porsches along the way on some interesting roads, a club outing.

993/964 Register Run to Brandy Creek Estate

Achilly but sunny start with the forecast not great and some very heavy rain a few days earlier. Wet road conditions? Lots of new potholes? What would we find? But this did not deter the 16 sparkling Porsches lined up raring to go, including Turbos and a Macan. We set off from Hallam for a great run down through South Gippsland to the pretty village of Loch for morning tea.

With lots of sunshine and a local market that begged to be explored, it gave the group opportunity for a range of activities including enjoying coffee and yummy freshly baked scones at Loch Village Food Store, along with the usual catch-up chats and for some; a spot of window shopping.

The second half of the run was through the spectacular scenic roads of the Bass Coast Shire, Kongwak, Jumbunna, and passing through Korumburra and up to our luncheon destination Brandy Creek Estate for a delicious and plentiful 8-course shared plated Tapas lunch overlooking a sunny valley of sparkling vineyards. New members Andrew & Sue Pitchford (2018 Macan) were welcomed and were also one of the 3 raffle winners of a delicious bottle of Brandy Creek Estate 2019 Tempranillo.

A big thank you to Leon and Irene Christodulaki for all their time and organisation for what was a most enjoyable day.
