While we’re enjoying the summer weather, a few precautions to safeguard our dogs: Overheating Your dog can overheat in a hurry. Dogs can’t regulate their body heat as efficiently as humans, because most of their sweat glands are confined to the pads of their feet. Panting is your dog’s primary means of regulating body temperature. In addition to overheating, your dog can also become dehydrated very rapidly. Make sure your dog has a constant source of fresh, clean drinking water. If your dog will be outside in the heat for any period, he/she should have access to a completely shaded area in addition to plenty of cool drinking water. Make sure your dog is indoors when the temp climbs to 32oC or above. To cool your dog down if it will be spending time in your yard, you can turn on the hose or sprinkler. You can also fill a children’s small plastic wading pool with water and encourage your dog to sit or lie in it to cool off. Exercise your dog either in the early morning or evening when the temperature is coolest. Try to stay in the shade during daylight hours, and no matter the time of day, don’t overdo outdoor exercise or play sessions. Even on an overcast day or in the evening, a long period of physical exertion in hot weather can cause heatstroke in your dog. Don’t allow your dog to walk or rest on hot outdoor surfaces like sidewalks or parking lots. Your dog’s paws, belly or hindquarters can sustain burns from hot concrete. Just walking on hot pavement can cause him to overheat. Summer short haircuts can help a dog stay cool, however, be mindful that dogs with a lot of white can sunburn if the coat is clipped short. Never under any circumstances leave your dog in a parked vehicle on a hot day. Your car or truck cab can become a furnace very quickly, even with the windows open, and can cause a fatal case of heatstroke in your beloved dog.

same precautions when walking your dog. Store all chemicals out of reach of your dog. Remember to keep citronella candles, oil products and insect coils out of your dog’s reach as well. If you’ll be doing any planting to brighten up your home or yard, before you stock up on seeds or visit your local nursery, make sure you know which plants, flowers and greenery are toxic to your dog if ingested. Call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately if you suspect your dog or cat has swallowed a poisonous substance.

Parties Summertime is when many people host backyard pool parties and barbecues. There are holiday celebrations at the start and end of the season. The warmer months are also the time for block parties, picnics, family gatherings, and outdoor community events. As much fun as the festivities are for the two-legged members of your family, it’s best to keep dogs a safe distance from celebrations. Take care not to lose a dog out a door or window left open during a party at your home. Keep dogs away from your food, beverages, garbage, and decorations. Don’t leave your dog alone with unfamiliar children or even adult party guests. Unless your dog is very well trained on a lead, I don’t recommend bringing him to outdoor community events. Most pups are over-stimulated by all the new sights, sounds and especially the smells of a large outdoor gathering and neither of you will have much fun if he’s yanking at his leash the whole time while you try to calm and control him. Also keep in mind many dogs are terrified of fireworks displays, so it’s best to leave your dog safely at home. If neighbors are setting off their own backyard displays, keep your dog home since the fireworks can cause a serious injury or be toxic to a curious dog. Thunderstorms can pose another challenge. If your dog is concerned, try to distract with play, invest in a Thunder shirt, calming hormones and extracts. Help your dog relax in a safe contained area, often basement washrooms or laundry rooms, or in their crate with a nice chew toy.

Water Many PWD owners mistakenly believe their dog was born knowing how to swim. You should introduce your pup gradually to water, and either go in with her the first few outings, or be prepared to jump in to either encourage her or help her safely exit the water. If you’re going out on a boat with your dog, it’s recommended she have her own flotation equipment. Even dogs who are strong swimmers can get hurt in the water or worn out from exertion. A flotation device will keep her in view until you or someone else can get her to safety. If your dog doesn’t consistently respond when you call her, attach a length of rope to her flotation device so you can pull her in if you need to.

Poisons Many commonly used fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and mulches are loaded with toxic chemicals. Same goes for rodent bait. Don’t allow your dog access to areas of your garden, lawn, house or outbuildings where chemicals have been used. Take the

Pests Depending on where you live and your dog’s lifestyle, you’ll need to prepare to manage summertime dog pests like fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. In most cases, there are safe, effective ways to prevent or eradicate pest infestations that don’t involve dosing your dog with toxic chemicals. For tick removal you can get a special removal tool which allows you to safely extricate the little blood suckers if they manage to attach to your dog. If you live in an area where Lyme disease is endemic: According to Meryl P. Littman, VMD, Dipl. ACVIM, at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, canine exposure to Lyme disease is common, but the disease is not: “Ninety-five percent of exposed dogs don’t get sick, but they become Lyme antibody-positive on tests, which may scare people into thinking they need to be treated,... we don’t treat asymptomatic dogs, but we check their urine for protein.” Again, these are not sick dogs but dogs that have been exposed to the disease.

The immune systems of seropositive dogs have identified the Lyme disease pathogen and mounted an appropriate, effective response. So even though they test positive, they do not become sick with the disease. Only about five percent of dogs exposed to Lyme disease actually develop symptoms of the infection, including: fever, lameness, lethargy, malaise, shifting joint pain. These symptoms are quite successfully treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. It’s also important to note that dogs that are positive for Lyme disease cannot infect humans. Infections in both people and their dogs are transmitted only by the bite of an infected tick.

Congratulations on choosing a wonderful breed, you’ll have many years to enjoy your pup and the PWDCC New Puppy Introductory Offer will help start you off. The PWDCC is the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC, see www.ckc.ca) sanctioned National Breed Club! Our responsibilities include the breed standard, qualifying to provide CKC events, rescue and re-homing and much more. It’s a club across Canada that sponsors events that are fun and informative, including seminars on the many activities you can enjoy with our breed and on health and training issues also. See our web site events section from the home page for a schedule of upcoming events and read about past events. Our web site has general information and a protected section for members only at www.pwdcc.org. The Waterlog, our quarterly newsletter, available to members only, is distributed on the web site and by mail. It reports on events, current issues and showcases our members and their dogs. The New Puppy Introductory Offer will give you a taste of all this for the first year of your puppy’s life for only $20.00 ($15.00 for those joining after Sept. 1). You will receive 3 Waterlogs, one with your application and 2 mailed to you (1 mailed for those joining after Sept. 1). You will have access to the member only web site, with our Forum area for chatting. You are welcome to come to club events, but puppies under one year aren’t ready to fully participate in some activities. Next year you can become full members. Membership is $35.00 for the 1st member and $10.00 for each additional family member. Your email address is important to us! Email is used for ongoing communication, announcements, updates, etc. So don’t forget to provide it to us on the NPP application form.

Please mail your completed application and cheque, money order, payable to PWDCC to our Secretary Roslyn Eskind, 471 Richmond Street West, Toronto ON M5V 1X9, or email roslyn@pwdcc.org, or use PayPal from our web site home page member application button.

About the PWD The Portuguese Water Dog is a strong, robust, medium-sized, agile dog with the stamina and endurance to do a full day’s work. The breed is a loyal, affectionate, energetic, intelligent family companion and watch dog and it thrives on and demands human attention. Its attractive, playful appearance often belies its true character. It remains a true working dog, tough and independent at times, not a dog for everybody. The life expectancy of the average Portuguese Water Dog is 12 to 15 years. They tend to mature slowly and remain active well into their senior years. Daily doses of exercise are a must or the PWD will provide its own exuberant exercise indoors. PWDs require an owner as active, involved and intelligent as they are or they will soon be running the household and getting into mischief. These dogs enjoy structured activity to channel their energy and intelligence, Agility, Flyball, Obedience, Rally-O and Water Work are all great outlets and help develop the special bond with his people that the PWD needs to thrive.

The Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada www.pwdcc.org

The PWDCC Puppy Program is open to all PWDCC breeders, not only those who participate in the PWDCC Breeder Program. It gives puppy people an introduction to the club and the world of pure bred dogs. Puppy membership benefits include the Waterlog, club events, access to archived Waterlogs and the searchable membership directory. This gives them opportunities to meet other puppy and experienced owners to network about resources in their neighbourhood and more. For just $20.00 per puppy, the breeder can choose to purchase the membership on behalf of their owners or make this part of their purchase package. A win-win for all!

ThePresident’sLetter Another summer season is in full swing and our club is really busy organizing and executing a variety of PWD activities!

I am taking this opportunity to appeal to all of our breeders to use our Puppy Introduction Program as a strategy to support your club, recruit new members and provide support to your puppy buyers. Our summer events would not be possible

This is a good time to mention that none of these activities would be possible without the tireless efforts of our membership. Membership the operative word! Over the past year our club has witnessed a decline in renewals for membership. You can email the board through the PWDCC website (/pwdcc.org/PWDCC/ index.php/officers). We want to hear from you.

The Brag: Before his second birthday Oscar achieved 11 titles including two CARO Rally titles Magna Cum Laude. His CKC top PWD results in Rally Obedience (second in Group) was simply the outcome of getting ‘hooked’ on, and participating in a lot of trials! However, it’s safe to say that we’ve both learned bucket loads and had a great time along the way. It wasn’t my intention to school Oscar in formal obedience but, at our first puppy class, I remember thinking when I saw the trainer working her dog, ‘I want

Oscar to look at me like that!’. Rally Obedience was a great fit as it combines a timed obedience course with enthusiastic participation. Breeder Karen Matthews introduced us to the Waterlog

and the ‘Club’, so we attended the Beginner Water Day when Oscar was just six months old and LOVED IT! At 8 months he achieved his Junior Water certificate. It was a tremendous thrill last August to pass both the Apprentice and Working Water Dog levels at the PWD trials at Laurel Creek. This june all sound incredibly ambitious but Oscar was easily motivated with treats and very short training sessions. Sniffingacrossthecountry… Love on the Water The late afternoon sun filtered through the tall windows burnishing the rich oak panels of the lovely room and illuminating the large bowl of flowers on the table. The beautiful bride and her handsome groom stood facing each other as the Minister asked “who has the rings?” In the silence that followed the voice said clearly “Take it to Colin!” Gently and without hesitation, the ring bearer took the small black velvet pouch and trotted purposefully down the aisle to the groom and delivered the precious article into his hand. Portuguese Water Dog Zoe McMechan, CWD, had just made the most important Courier delivery of her life. Jen McMechan and Colin Van Schoor had met briefly three years earlier at the annual water camp held by the Ontario branch of the PWDCC. They met again later that summer with a small group of PWD enthusiasts training their dogs to prepare for some water trials. Jen, along with her dogs Zoe and Oakley, spent hours in the water with Colin and his dog Sable and over the next two summers, in between the underwater retrieves and boat rides, the two humans fell in love. The wedding, featuring the Portuguese Water Dogs, was held in June 2014 and the honeymoon after was spent on the beach in Antigua. Sadly the dogs had to stay home for that! Congratulations to the bride and groom. We wish them a very happy life together full of Portuguese Water Dog fun.

BRANCH News 2014 Dry Land Water Camp The camp was held at Richmond Green Community Centre. Thirteen dogs and their families attended, some from as far away as Petawawa Ontario. Participants were introduced to the rudiments of water work, focusing on retrieving bumpers and float lines, delivering articles to hand and an underwater retrieve. All thirteen of the dogs were very well trained in basic obedience and demonstrated a desire to do the work they were bred to do. It was a most impressive group of dogs and handlers. Business arising from Minutes National Specialty The National Specialty to be held in Ontario Aug 9th 2014 weekend has been approved by the CKC. Roslyn will ask members to proof read the specialty advertisement. The proposed budget was reviewed and an estimate of the best and worst scenario was determined. The board reviewed the proposed expenses/revenue for items such as trophy donations, web site, on-line donations, silent auction, judge fees and expenses and estimate of entry numbers. In 2012 the PWDCC made a small profit on the National Specialty due to number of entries. The expenses for the signage and trophies could be reassessed should the break-even point be exceeded. It was suggested that the board members telephone/email their contacts and friends to spread the word about the upcoming National Specialty. They could personally invite contacts to the National Specialty. This is also to encourage the American PWD owners to attend. Sharon and Michelle will work on getting raffle items for the Silent Auction. Motion Jennifer made a motion to accept the budget. Patti seconded. Approved. Waterlog Sharon has invited feedback from the membership delivery of the Waterlog. Presently, it costs approximately $3,000 per year to publish and mail copies quarterly to the members. Changing the distribution from paper to electronic would greatly reduce the cost. Members have one month to respond with their comments and suggestions. The board discussed strategies to increase membership. Roslyn will send a membership blast to remind members to submit renewal applications. Letter from CKC The CKC sent a letter to the PWDCC President, Sharon Lapstra, in March 2014 concerning the subject of cropping, docking and dewclaw removal. CKC is reviewing and updating breed standards to allow for choice whether to crop, dock or remove dewclaws. Sharon responded that there is no reason to alter the breed standard in any way. We should continue to rear remove dewclaws and optionally front dewclaws. Report of the Treasurer Bank Balance: $ 16,269.34 Two outstanding cheques: $447.24 Balance $15,822.09 Pay Pal Balance: $644.00

There are: 152 members 88 renewals 16 new members 33 puppy members 12 breeder members Motion The 2013 financial statements were reviewed and discussed. Michelle made a motion to accept the financial statements. Patti seconded the motion. Approved. Rescue Update There were eleven (11) inquiry telephone calls to the Central Region Rescue coordinator for information with regards to the PWDCC Rescue program. The Rescue program received an application for a Foster Application. It was discussed that the applicant was perfect and would be a great foster home. Sharon directed Michelle to contact the applicant and let her know that her application was accepted as a foster home. Motion Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Jennifer. Pat seconded the motion. Approved.

May 13, 2014, 8pm EST Present: Sharon Lapstra, ON Michelle Jackson, ON Pat Vokes, ON Patti McDonald, ON Jennifer Byers, PQ Roslyn Eskind, ON, guest Andy Gamache, AB Absent: Mavis McClintock, BC Motion Jennifer made a motion to accept the minutes of the April 15th 2014 PWDCC meeting. Pat Vokes seconded the motion. Approved. Business arising from Minutes: National Specialty The National Specialty to be held in Ontario Aug 9th 2014 weekend has been approved by the CKC. The planning continues for the National Specialty. An advertisement will be posted in the Courier. Sharon and Roslyn are looking into the purchase of trophies. Sharon explained that Tina Evans creates PWD renderings and applies them to mugs/clothing etc. These would make nice prizes. Sharon will check the products and prices available. It was suggested that the Club print out flyers to hand out at the upcoming Nutmeg Speciality in June. This might generate more interest in our National Specialty. Roslyn will send an e-blast to our PWDCC members to encourage sponsorship. Sharon explained that there will be a Silent Auction at the hospitality event. She will purchase/arrange for approximately fifteen (15) items. Judge Janice Watts travel is booked. The cost was under $700.00. Waterlog The last issue of the Waterlog received excellent reviews from our membership. The issue featured the story about our rescue dog “Patches” and a report on the 1st International Congress of the PWD held in Portugal. Roslyn explained that the on-line copy of the next Waterlog issue will have a similar format to that of the previously printed copies. The on-line copy will be e-blasted to all members. Land Training Pat explained that the land training event went well. Everyone who participated had a great time. The final financial tally showed a $310.50 profit.

NEW DIRECTORS APPOINTED BY THE PWDCC BOARD JUNE 17, 2014 EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

Deirdre Hall Stouffville Ontario, deirdre@pwdcc.org Ontaro Regional Director I have been around dogs my whole life, growing up with at least two dogs in our family at all times. My mother introduced me to breeding at a young age as she bred Dachshunds for many years. My husband and I got our first PWD, named Fado, in 1992 after waiting over a year for her arrival. Back then they were very rare and hard to get. Fado was soon joined by 3 more water dogs

Membership There was discussion on how to increase membership. In 2014 only three club breeders use the puppy membership program. PWDCC membership cost for a puppy membership is $20 per puppy. Ideas were discussed and agreed that we should investigate strategies that could increase benefits of membership.

one of which was named Tigre and he graced our lives for over

Pat will send an email reminder to members that haven’t yet renewed their membership.

Resignation Kathy Dick submitted her resignation from the board of directors. There are presently two vacancies on the board. The club will need to open the floor for nominations. Roslyn will send an email blast to members advising them of the vacancies and anyone interested can forward a short bio and application to Sharon. Motion Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Jennifer. Patti seconded the motion. Approved. The next PWDCC board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

17 years. I helped and learned a lot about the breed and breeding from my breeder, Leona Ives. I worked as a graphic artist and subdivision planner for over 27 years, most of that time with a large private Engineering and Planning firm. After under my kennel name, Fado. I am currently the Breeder Contact for the PWDCC and look forward to serving the club in this new capacity as well.

Sue Hopkins Chilliwack British Columbia, sue@pwdcc.org British Columbia Regional Director I got my first PWD in 2002, then followed up with a second in 2004. The breed was so much fun for us and was our very first dogs. I have been a breeder since 2006 in Chilliwack, BC and have absolutely loved raising well-socialized PWDs. Their intelligence and fun nature makes me enjoy every one of them. I have been active on the board of the PWDBC as well as the board of the PWDCC in 20082009 and am so looking forward to helping the national club once again in the role of director.
