This year we are offering an Available Puppies Listing on the club website. This program supports PWDCC Rescue and gives you the opportunity to promote your ethical breeding practises! The forms are on www.pwdcc.org from the home page click the membership button.

The PWDCC Puppy Program is open to all PWDCC breeders, not only those who participate in the PWDCC Available Puppies Listing. It gives puppy people an introduction to the club and the world of pure bred dogs. Puppy membership benefits include the Waterlog, club events, access to archived Waterlogs and the searchable membership directory. This gives them opportunities to meet other puppy and experienced owners to network about resources in their neighbourhood and more. For just $1.00 per puppy, the breeder can choose to purchase the membership on behalf of their owners or make this part of their purchase package. A win-win for all!

ThePresident’sLetter Spring has sprung and I am sure that we are all looking forward to getting out and about with our beloved dogs in the nice weather. We have lots of events to look forward to this summer, including the National Specialty which will be held in conjunction with the Alberta Kennel Club show July 26-August 1, 2016. It will be a great specialty which will include water trials, agility, obedience and rally. Please check our website www.pwdcc.org for further details. Also, please join us for the 2nd Annual Walk for Rescue. We will have two locations this year for walks. One in the Barrie area and one in the Cambridge area. Please check our facebook page and website for details. If you cannot attend the walk, please sponsor the walk by making a donation to our rescue program through the website.

Co-ordinator is Karen Matthews. She is willing to answer any questions you may have about how to have your dog recognized for its achievements. We continue to work on promoting membership to our club. Breeders are encouraged to use the Puppy Introduction Program which provides new puppy owners with club membership for one year for the price of $1.00. If anyone has any questions about this program, feel free to talk with anyone on the board. Thanking all of our wonderful volunteers in advance for the events to come this spring and summer. We couldn’t do it without you!! Play safe this summer and see you in the ring and in the water! Sharon Lapstra, MSW, President, PWDCC

We are also pleased to announce a new program which recognizes the achievements of our dogs. The program is called the PWDCC Achievement Program. Read about this exciting new program in this issue. The Program

2015 was a great year for Portuguese Water Dogs. PWDs were active in Obedience, Rally Obedience, Agility and Conformation. The CKC Official records are shown in the table left for the top five dogs in each activity. PWDs also competed in AAC agility and CARO Rally-O and of course PWDCC and PWDCA Water Trials.

Notable is how PWDS placed in All Breed and Working Group competition. In Obedience, 3 PWDs placed in the top 10 in Group. Owners Brenda Brown, Lorie Crouch and Tammy Hibberson should be justly proud of their 7, 9 and 10 placements in Group. In Rally Obedience, Lorie, Ann Passifiume should be proud of their dog’s results in Group, number 1 and 6. And Lorie made it to 3rd placement in

Funniest story: In our first rally Excellent trial (off leash), on the ‘Forward’ command from the judge, Oscar took off for the food bowls, grabbed the stuffed duck and raced around the ring, shaking the life out of it, much to the delight of onlookers and my mortification. The judge, Bonnie Christie, calmly asked me to call my dog and graciously allowed us to start again, although we did NQ. Later a spectator asked me if Oscar would entertain us again in the afternoon. I sheepishly replied, “I hope not!”

GCh Robel Grace Kelly Of Nautique, CD RN AgNJ with Robin Illchuk.

GCh Claircreek Lusitano Oceano Atlantico Breeders, Donna Gottdenker and Hugo Olivieira Owner, Donna Gottdenker, Handler, Edgar Rojas After achieving results in the show rings in Europe, including winning the Lisbon Puppy Winner, achieving the Portuguese Young Hope (JE13) and finishing his Gibraltar Junior Championship, Donna decided to bring Oceano back to Canada. He finished his Canadian Championship very quickly from the Puppy Class winning Best Of Breed over Specials and placing in the Working Group. Donna then took him to the U.S. and finished him there to become one of the Top 20 PWDs of 2014. Edgar Rojas began handling Oceano in 2014 for six months and finished as Top PWD in Canada, #4 in the Working Group and #14 all breed, holding the Best in Show record in Canada for a PWD. It was then that we decided to campaign him in 2015. Most memorable wins: Oceano’s journey of wonderful achievements included Group 1st in the Prestige Cluster in Chicago at the International Kennel Club, and he won his second AOM, over 140 Specials, at the 2015 PWDCA National Specialty, under judge Mr. William Shelton. He was to end 2015 with

This current puppy is extremely shy and she has called in a behavior specialist. She cannot take the puppy outside due to temperament. She works full-time and has not been able to put the time needed into this puppy, breeder has refused to take back. This lady will sign the dog over to PWDCC Rescue, and we will try to assess and place it. Michelle has agreed to take the puppy at this time, Jennifer will drive to meet Michelle. Waterlog We have a couple choices moving forward with the Waterlog. Continue using Roslyn’s colleague (Beverly) who has helped with previous issues or Alexandra Nicole who has volunteered. Alexandra does not use the same program but has done some newsletter issues for her current job. Neither lady has much experience with PWD’s so we still need an editor. Both ladies would be capable of page layout, and some content management. Justine Robinson has also volunteered to edit. Roslyn suggested Beverly moving forward, and Alexandra and Justine to assist. The template would be transferred to Beverly and a meeting would be held regarding timelines. Alexandra could then be editor and work with Beverly. Motion Sharon put a motion was put forward to create a budget of $5,000/year for the Waterlog. Sue Hopkins seconded. Approved. Sue Hopkins has volunteered to help with articles for the Waterlog geared towards new puppy owners. National Specialty Alberta Kennel Club has submitted our applications to the CKC for approval. Hopefully we will hear in the New Year. Roslyn and Tracy worked on an ad to submit to the Courier, first ad will run in the Jan/Feb issue with another one to follow in the next issue. Tracy has had her first meeting with the Specialty committee and they have started with some of the logistics. Discussion of colors for logo was had, and decision to go with a “Blush” color for flower and background in a pop color possibly a blue.

Caledon booster show was a success, lots of fun was had by all. Some pictures and unofficial results were posted on our Facebook page.

Ontario board term is up at the end of the year, there are 4 positions available with no interest in anyone stepping forward for the President’s role. Pat Vokes and Catherine Gadd will help mentor new President. Some discussion was had regarding why there needs to be an Ontario branch, or could it be dissolved. An email blast will be sent out looking for new executives for the upcoming term. Update Three people have stepped up to the plate to run the Ontario branch. Not sure who will be in which position, those things will be worked out in January. Fran Archambault has joined the meeting to discuss the PWD awards program (as per attachments emailed to board members). Discussion was had regarding colour selections, crest shapes, and thread thickness. Idea would be to move forward with ordering for Conformation, Obedience, Rally, Water and Agility and only order other events when required. Concerns regarding the costs of the badges discussed and the set up fees charged with each order. Sharon has agreed to work with Fran further on this. Discussion was held regarding possibly setting up a smaller committee to continue to work on this program. Update Unfortunately the cost of the badges was quite high ($4,100.00-$5,300.00) and so committee looked into pins. Found some pins that could be ordered through the US but the company requires a minimum order of 100 pins, this plus the current difference in the US dollar did not make the costs practical on these either.

Absent: Deirdre Hall, ON Pat Vokes, ON Sue Hopkins, BC Motion Jennifer Byers moved to accept the minutes of the last meeting, Michelle Jackson seconded. Approved. Treasurer’s Report $21,859.00 $677.00 outstanding cheques $21,182.00 final balance $528.00 paypal balance 131 members + 2 new members for 2016 53 renewals for 2016 11 new Puppy members for 2016 Rescue Jennifer reported that the rescue puppy from Montreal last month was rehomed with a family who has previously acquired a rescue PWD and the puppy has adapted extremely well, it seemed to thrive with an older PWD to follow. Michelle has stepped down from the position of Rescue Coordinator and Patti McDonald has accepted the position. Another rescue situation came up in Collingwood, however, we believe it was resolved as no phone call was returned after PWDCC offered to step in.

New Business

Waterlog Beverly has agreed to take on the production of the Waterlog and Alex has agreed to take on the editor function for the coming year. Roslyn will work with both of them to make the transition.

Andy put forth a question to see if the PWDCC would allow the Alberta Club to purchase the existing boats that are being used in Alberta so they will belong to the Alberta Club for their use, at in additon to water trials, practices and other events. Replacement cost would be about $4,000.00. Sharon had asked that Andy put together a proposal and forward it prior to the next meeting.

National Specialty The CKC has approved dates and submission for Specialty. Show Secretary has submitted request for approval of Judges. Ad has been placed in the Courier and should appear in the next issue. In the final process of finalizing the host hotel at the Delta Hotel South, this will be the same venue as the banquet.

Update The Alberta club discussed this at their last executive meeting and would like more time to research before they decide on how to proceed.

Current Business

Roslyn suggested Gagi Bedi who has produced all the previous club merchandise. Roslyn will send his contact information to Karen and Fran.

The PWDCOntario boat trailer required a license plate (required to be in a person’s name), so Pat has placed it in her name. She would like confirmation that the club insurance will cover the boat/trailer even after her term. Andy commented that the insurance of the vehicle towing the trailer covers the trailer. The boats are insured through the club insurance. Sadly, Petro Haring has passed away as a result of a long fight with cancer. Tracy mentioned possibly mentioning something in the next Waterlog. Next meeting will be January 12th at 7:30pm EST. Motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Jennifer Buyers, Andy seconded it. Approved.

The PWDCOntario will be meeting on January 20th and will be sorting out their executive at that time. Will report back for our February meeting. The awards program has been tabled to the February meeting. Sharon will ask Karen and Fran to attend. The Alberta Club will have a decision for us next meeting regarding purchase of the PWDCC boats. New Business CKC forwarded a letter asking the PWDCC to consider replacing “no dew claws” to “dew claws may be removed”. Discussion and a unanimous vote was held to decline the CKC offer and PWDCC will not change the standard. The standard will remain requiring the removalof rear dew claws which are dangerous. Sharon will respond to CKC regarding this discussion. If CKC insists, we will conduct an email vote of the membership requiring a 2/3 response in order to effect an amendment to the standard. Next meeting will be February 9 at 7:30pm EST. Motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Tracy Brown, Michelle Jackson seconded. Approved.

Tammy Hibberson has resigned from the PWDCC Water Trial Committee to give someone else an opportunity to be on it, and the committee. Catherine Gadd, Lorraine Wilson, Audrey Hawthorne and Pat Vokes would like to invite Greg Illchuck to join.

PWDCOntario update - Received approx. six calls for the land camp and have paid for the hall. Not sure how many have registered as entries go to Catherine Gadd. Awards program Karen Matthews signed on to the meeting and discussion was had regarding the badge program as per the attachments that were sent via email with Agenda. Cost was much cheaper with our current merchandise provider (GB). Discussion was held to not include Conformation as it would generate too many pins and also not all dogs are shown by breeders or owners. Delivery of awards would take 4-6 weeks from time of order. Recommendation was put to delay the order until Karen knows how many will be required the first time. This could be about 8 weeks after submission of first order. Each badge will cost $4.57 plus shipping to Karen and then shipping the order to each individual. Discussion of cost of badge was had and decision to charge $15.00/badge was agreed upon.

Sue Hopkins will monitor closely. Roslyn has posted on Facebook to update that PWDCC is aware and on top of the situation. Waterlog Beverly Furer has agreed to take on the production of the Waterlog and Alex Nicole has agreed to take on the editor function for the coming year. Roslyn will meet with Beverly this week. National Specialty All CKC approvals have been received. Hotel has been confirmed as Delta South Calgary, and banquet room has been booked. Send the information to Patti MacDonald regarding the National so we can get hotel information posted on Facebook as deadline is April. Current Business PWDCOntario met and put together some budget numbers for this year. Cost of flights are unfortunately increasing as well as judge’s fees due to the Canadian Dollar. Events will remain the same as the previous year due to new executive learning the ropes, both Pat Vokes and Catherine Gadd will continue to provide support to them. Pat gave a brief outline of upcoming events and budgets. Mention was made to recognize Patti & Rick McDonald for the storage of equipment during the summer months and Roy and Pat Vokes for storage for the remainder of the year. Both of these gestures save the club considerable money and the convenience of having these close to the Waterloo water site is very convenient. Motion Pat Vokes motioned to accept the PWDCOntario proposed events, Deirdre seconded. Approved. Motion Michelle motioned to approve the budget put forth by the PWDCOntario for upcoming events, Jennifer seconded. Approved. The awards program has been tabled to the March meeting. Sharon will ask Karen Matthews and Fran Archambault to attend. The Alberta Club has decided to not proceed with purchasing boats from PWDCC. Boats will continue to be covered under PWDCC insurance as the boats are only being used at APWDC/PWDCC events. Pat will get specific details regarding insurance in writing from our provider.

Motion Sharon moved that we accept Greg Illchuck on the Water Trial Committee, Deirdre seconded. Approved. Next meeting will be March 8th at 7:30pm EST. Motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Sharon Lapstra, seconded by Pat Vokes. Approved. Pat confirmed with insurance (unable to get it in writing) that the boats in Alberta are covered under PWDCC insurance as long as it’s a PWDCC event. Insurance only covers fire and theft and public liability, not transit- the vehicle towing the boat is responsible for this. Rescue Some dogs are now available for adoption from the BC seizure. Not much else has been reported. BC-SPCA did send an email along with voicemail thanking us the donation. Waterlog Beverly Furer was away and is back later this week so Roslyn and her will have a sit down and organize at that time. Next Waterlog is due in March and then every 3 months after (on a sliding scale) July then November are following issues. National Specialty Tracy Brown is working with Roslyn to get the website up along with the Facebook pages for advertising. Roslyn posted the announcement on all PWD Facebook pages. Website should be ready by the end of the week.

PWDCC Achievement Program was the name decided for this program. Karen will re-work some of the announcements/verbiage to finalize. Once all is finalized it will be forwarded to Roslyn/Beverly to review (proof) and hopefully be ready for the May/June Waterlog, possible role out date of May 1. Motion by Sharon Lapstra to name the PWDCC badge program PWDCC Achievement Program with a start date of January 2016, to be coordinated by Karen Matthews. Pat Vokes seconded. Approved. Notice was sent to the CKC, stating that we didn’t support their suggested change to our breed standard. CKC wants us to send an email to our entire membership and wants us to vote on it. Tracy will send an e-blast with a date to respond via email to vote yes or no, then she will tabulate the results and submit to CKC on the Club’s behalf. Discussion regarding membership growth including Breeders’ puppy members. Ideas to contact breeders to encourage their use of the Puppy Membership Program. New Business Request from Val Berry for the board to consider Penn Hip evaluation for PWD’s. Discussion was had with comparison of Penn Hip and OFA. The Board has decided to maintain our health recommendation for OFA hip testing only, in line with the PWDCA. Andy Gamache submitted the budget for the Water Trial for the PWDCC National. The budget is currently set up for 1 day but if entries exceed the day limit, the trial will be held over 2 days. Motion Deirdre motions to accept the budget, Pat Vokes seconded. Approved. Next meeting will be April 12th at 7:30pm EST. Motion to adjourn the meeting by Sharon Lapstra, Pat Vokes seconded. Approved.

Prizes are starting to be organized- must be approved by the PWDCC Executive prior to ordering Ad was placed in Jan/Feb Courier, unfortunately with the delay in receiving the magazine it’s best to just submit one ad.

Response to the requested change in breed standard was sent to the Canadian Kennel Club but we have yet to hear a response from them.
