ThePresident’sLetter Summer is upon us .... finally!! As many of us prepare for our water and land activities, remember to keep your dogs safe during the hot summer days with lots of hydration and limited land activities. We are all looking forward to our National Specialty being held at the Alberta Kennel Club show at Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta. Many thanks to the Alberta club for all of their hard work organizing a variety of venues including 2 water trials, obedience, agility and rally. For more information on all events please check the PWDCC website for details on accommodations and registration. In Ontario we are looking forward to our water trail at the Laurel Creek Conservation area in Waterloo. Charles White will be judging this event. Details will be posted on our website shortly. For more information, please contact Patti McDonald at patti@pwdcc.org.

Our rescue program continues to take applications for dogs. Patti McDonald is doing a great job co-ordinating this program and locating resources for dogs in need. If anyone is interested in providing a temporary foster home, grooming or training services for our PWD’s in need please contact Patti. The board continues to work on issues related to increasing membership and public education regarding our breed. We are always interested in the concerns of our members so please bring them forth. You can email the board directly from the website. Have a safe and productive summer! We will have lots to report in our next issue of the Waterlog! Again, thank you all volunteers for your continued commitment to the betterment of our breed. Sharon Lapstra, MSW, President, PWDCC

BRANCH News Water Camp Report The PWDCC water season had a good start on May 1st, 2016, at the PWDCOntario Land Training Water Workshop held in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Instructors Lorraine Wilson and myself introduced 21 teams of owners and their Portuguese Water Dogs, ranging from 5 months old to 7 years old, to the rudiments and history of water work. The lesson plan included retrieving bumpers, dragging float lines and an introduction to the underwater retrieve using water filled dishpans and highly motivating hot dogs.

At the Beginners’ Water Camp the next day, the dogs and handlers got to work after a demonstration of the Junior and Apprentice water trial levels. The lesson plan at this event included boat rides, jumping off the boat platform, retrieving articles above and below the water and swimming as a human and canine team. It was a fine sight to see so many enthusiastic dogs with plenty of natural talent strutting their stuff! By the end of the session, every dog was able to swim, even those who started the day feeling a little reluctant. Unfortunately, the camp ended rather abruptly when a thunderstorm blew in quickly from across the lake but everyone had worked hard and

PWDCC RESCUE Vida’s Story Patti McDonald is the Rescue Coordinator for the Central Region of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada. In early spring of 2016 she received a phone call from an owner who was looking to enter her one-year-old Portuguese Water Dog, named Vida, into the PWDCC Rescue Program. Vida’s owner knew that she was not providing her with the best living situation, as she discovered her daughter had allergies and therefore had to limit Vida’s living space in the household. She connected with the PWDCC Rescue Program to help assist with finding Vida the perfect family. After a long conversation with Vida’s owner, Patti determined that the young PWD had not bitten anyone and therefore she was eligible to enter the rescue program. Vida was a young bouncy and sweet PWD who needed owners with a little more experience with dogs, especially with establishing boundaries. Patti coordinated with PWDCC President, Sharon Lapstra, who was able to meet with the owner to pick up Vida. Patti and Sharon took her to a groomer and for a veterinary appointment to check that she was in good health. Patti reached out to a friend who was able to take Vida into their home to foster temporarily as they looked for a suitable family for her. After the health assessments were complete, Patti started general behavioural assessments. She took Vida on a leashed

of a PWD is also important; connect with breeders, trainers, or people knowledgeable in the breed so you they learn all that is required to keep a PWD happy, healthy, and well mannered. There are many training techniques and resources available, and it is important to know what can help to build a great bond with your dog so they can live harmoniously as part of the family.

Patch & Gus In October 2012, with the support of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada my husband Milan and I adopted Patch. He's a white Portuguese Waterdog with a big black Patch. We adopted him knowing he had behavioural issues and would need major training. There were many challenges specifically in the first 6-12 months, and the PWDCC was very helpful. With great determination, the support of our friends and family and lots of patience we refused to give up on him! Despite the challenge, we quickly fell in love. It's been 2.5 years, and now at 5 years of age, Patch is cuddly, playful, calm and loyal. He still has his obsession with the ball and some things we need to be cautious of, but all in all he's perfect. In early December 2015, Jennifer Byers, PWDCC Rescue Coordinator, reached out to us to tell us about a 4 month old puppy that needed a new home due to behavioural reasons. The family that purchased him was giving him away as he was not adapting well into their home and with two young children it was not the right time for them to put their energy towards extra training. My husband Milan and I immediately began reaching out to friends and family to help find a home for him. We were certain that with a little training and the right environment this pup could live a happy life.

As interested as many of our friends and family were, no one was ready to make the commitment especially right before the holidays. We decided to go meet "Gaston" to see what his personality was like. When we entered the family's home he was hiding under the dining room table, growling and scared. It took some time (and fresh bacon) to get him to come over

Toys of Choice: Anything I can chew! I especially love my westpaw Hurley dog bone and my pink spikey ball.

Most Ashamed of: Jumping and mouthing when I am too excited!

Most proud of: All the progress I’ve made since I’ve been a crazy puppy.

What I Would Like To Be When I Grow Up: An obedience champion! And a big sister someday.

Molly lives with Osman Aganagic & Meagan Graham in Ottawa Ontario

Favourite Non-Consumable: Anything I can get my mouth on. I especially like sticks!

Special Skill: Waking up my momma in the mornings, even when she doesn’t want me to.

Biggest Catastrophe: Nothing, I’m an angel! Favourite Destination: My grandparents’ house in Cornwall, where I can run, swim and eat as many treats as I want. They spoil me!

Bathing and Grooming Tolerance: I am a very good girl in the bath, but I think my brush makes a much better chew toy.
