I’m also hoping to finish my CD title this winter. We started Agility last summer and I loved it so much! I can’t wait for our next class. When I’m not working you can find me cuddled up with mommy or daddy or playing with my brother Atlas! We love to run and wrestle in the yard; it’s even more fun now that Atlas is able to keep up with me!

Tracy Brown has retired from the PWDCC Secretary/Director position. We thank her for all her hard work on behalf of the club, and wish her well. Frank Davidson is stepping up to join the board as Secretary/Director for Ontario region. Frank can be reached at frank@pwdcc.org

If the sire is from Europe or other international location, excluding the United States, it is not required that t he sire be registered in the Health and litter data base but health testing documentation must be provided in order to post the litter. The dam however, must be registered in the database. You can view the current list at http://www.pwdcc.org by clicking New Puppy, then click Available Puppies. The PWDCC Puppy Program is open to all PWDCC breeders, not only those who participate on the Available Puppies page. It gives puppy people an introduction to the club and the world of pure bred dogs. Puppy membership benefits include the Waterlog, club events, access to archived Waterlogs and the searchable membership directory. This gives them opportunities to meet other puppy and experienced owners to network about resources in their neighbourhood and more. For just $1.00 per puppy, the breeder can choose to purchase the membership on behalf of their owners or make this part of their purchase package. A win-win for all! Participation in the PWDCC Breeder Available Puppies or Puppy Program does not confer endorsement by the PWDCC of any kennel, breeding program or breeding practices.

Although FDA scientists carefully evaluate an animal drug prior to approval, there is the potential for new information to emerge after marketing, when the product is used in a much larger population. In the first three years after approval, the FDA pays particularly close attention to adverse event reports, looking for any safety information that may emerge.

Vaccines for Diseases Available and in Development

Terms to Know When Reading This Article

Vaccine development for many different diseases is ongoing. • Most vaccines used today are to protect against viral and bacterial infections. • Autoimmune and cancer vaccines for humans are in development and a few are in early phase clinical trials. A vaccine for canine melanoma cancer is on the market, but this vaccine is given after a dog is diagnosed with the disease and is refractory to routine therapies. • Allergen-specific immunotherapy – commonly referred to as

• Adjuvants – substances added to certain vaccines to enhance and prolong their effectiveness. • Antigen – foreign substance or toxin that induces an immune response in the body. • Epitopes – the specific parts of the antigen to which antibodies or T-cells bind themselves. • Immunogenicity – the ability to induce the desired humoral (B-cell) and/or cell-mediated (T-cell) response to generate immunity. • Peptide – a compound consisting of two or more amino acids linked in a chain. • Plasmids – small DNA molecules within cells that are

When the virus is given, it multiplies many-fold and stimulates the immune system’s production of antibodies, creating an immune response that protects the body against future exposure to the disease. When given appropriately, these vaccines are important and essential to protect the health and longevity of people and animals. However, side effects can occur such as an autoimmune diseases, inflammation, tissue damage, seizures, can-

One type of recombinant vaccine is recombinant protein vaccines (also known as recombinant subunit vaccines), which rely on recombinant DNA technology. However, these are not considered DNA vaccines. This technique involves inserting the DNA encoding antigen – such as a bacterial or viral

So, the logical conclusion would be a polysaccharide subunit vaccine. Unfortunately, polysaccharide vaccines against these bacteria tend not to be effective in infants and young children, and induce only short-term immunity. To circumvent this issue, conjugate subunit vaccines were developed, which bind the polysaccharide to a carrier protein that can induce longer term protection.

DNA Vaccines Research into DNA vaccines is exploding. In fact, defining “DNA vaccine” is next to impossible. At this point, the simplest way to explain a DNA vaccine is one in which the DNA containing the genetic information to produce the antigen is introduced to the body. Then, the DNA provides the instructions to the body to produce the antigen. We have read several research papers on the topic. We noticed that some DNA vaccines work and some do not. Overall, no one should be discouraged. Researchers definitely have a

RNA vaccines also appear to be safer than DNA vaccines since they do not disrupt an original cell’s natural DNA sequence. Research appears to be focused on non-amplifying and selfamplifying messenger RNA (mRNA). A drawback with nonamplifying mRNA is that it only encodes the antigen of interest. So, research is also focusing on self-amplifying mRNA, which encodes both the antigen of interest and those proteins enabling RNA vaccine replication. Does this all sound complicated biotechnology? You bet it is, and yet it represents the wave of the future for improved, targeted and safer vaccines.

1. A booster will be held on December 2nd at the Caledon Show, prizes will be donated. Judge will be Dr. Elliott Moore. 2. Discussion about if we should do ring side mentoring at this show was had. A list of people on who we can call on to do Judges’ Education at shows throughout Canada needs to be drawn-up. 3. Judges’ Education Preliminary edit was done from the film of the Specialty. This will be put up on Google Drive so the board can review it and then eventually post it on the website. 4. Nova Scotia Group had a meeting and Andy assisted with helping with discussion of what a branch entails and how finances are looked after etc. Pat explained how finances work to Andy and he will relay back to the group. We want to make sure we are not in conflict with the PWDCA National. We would also like a venue that can offer all events including water trials.

Alberta Portuguese Water Dog Club Alberta Water Trial – August 11th Water trial had the most entries ever. Trial was full with additional people wanting to register. New PWDCC Secretary Frank Davidson I have been retired since 2015. I’m now in a position to dedicate some of my time to our club and the breed that we all love. The strengths that I can add to our club are as follows: • A strong background in sales and sales management within the clinical and veterinary diagnostic market place. That is to say, I have confidence in my abilities and I’m comfortable communicating to a vast array of individuals/professionals. • Throughout my career I’ve participated, reviewed and analyzed many surveys (employee and customers) to aid in the determination of “what’s working and what’s not”. • Articulate in English and quite proficient with Microsoft Office and computers. • I pride myself in the amount of research that I do, for example, in choosing the breed and breeder of our current dog. Although I’ve only owned a Portuguese Water Dog for just over 2.5 years, I spent just over a year doing my research. Naturally I’ve been a member in good standing of the PWDCC for the entire time. • Our family has had plenty of experience with pets (dogs, cats, fish, and hamsters) over the past 40 years. • I have a fair bit of experience volunteering for clubs and sporting teams so I can appreciate the time and dedication that volunteers give on a yearly basis. I’ve managed both of our sons’ sports teams (baseball and soccer). I was the secretary for the London United Soccer Club during the years my son played for their organization. Given the opportunity, I’m confident in my ability to add value to our organization.
