PWDCOntario Water Trial Laurel Creek Conservation Area, Waterloo Ontario Reports from the PWDCOntario Water Trial Co-chairs Carolynne Issa Another wonderful Water Trial for the PWDCC Ontario Branch. On behalf of Catherine Gadd and myself, Co-chairs of this event: Firstly, thank you to our Judge Janice Cox Reilly, for your guidance and wisdom, and taking the time to speak with each team before and after their runs. You helped each team build confidence, and whether or not they Q'd, they left feeling good, and hungry for more! Janice, you made it really fun!

This year the PWDCOntario decided to have a beautiful sign made for our photo set-up that honours Catherine Gadd! Thank you so much to Andrew Bilous for creating this beautiful addition! This year is the last year that Catherine will Chair our trials, as she is off for her new life out east! It's very bittersweet, and there were many tears. She is very loved and will be very missed! On the bright side, we have roped her into being our Judge for the 2020 Trial! This is also the first year that the PWDCOntario has awarded medals for all titles, and ribbons for certificates! The medals are lovely! What great team work with Pat Vokes, to make this change!

Love ya! A HUGE thanks to our Water Trial Committee, who made this event run smoothly. Joanne Hardy Skalos, Brawna Levy, Pat Vokes and Roy, Frances Berman, Lorie Crouch, Kathy Hick. Without our volunteers, this event wouldn’t be possible. Thank you to all participants! Every single team worked their hearts out! It was a joy to watch! This year, the number of teams who qualified is outstanding! We had more than a 50% pass rate! Thank you to the many, many people and companies who donated something to our Trial. The participant trophy donations, cases of water, bags of ice, extra coffee, homemade dog cookies, the participant bags with small gifts. The beautiful dog bed, cooler bag and merchandise that were raffled off! Mari Szauerzopf, Drewsar Regd and Purina; Mammoth Dog Beds; Big Country Raw; Brawna Levy; Pat Vokes; and Don Allain.

Catherine Gadd I have Chaired or Co-chaired the Ontario Water Trials for many years. Every year at the end of the busy trial weekend I always think to myself "This is the best trial we have ever held". This year was no exception. We were blessed with perfect weather, a full trial of exceptional teams, a very high pass rate, great camaraderie, as always an exceptionally hard working committee and of course an excellent judge who with her enthusiasm kindness and knowledge of water work was able to get the best out of the dogs and handlers. Every year on the Saturday of our trials we have an opening ceremony at the end of which we play a recording of three anthems: Portuguese, American and Canadian. As our anthem

And also thanks to everyone who purchased an item of merchandise, or raffle ticket in support of our club. This year we sold over $1000 in merchandise! A new record for a one day sale! Frances Berman is a rock star! And everyone looked soooo amazing wearing our newest beautiful items! Thank you to every person who helped with set up and tear down of the Trial site. Many hands make light work. Last (but definitely not least), congratulations to Barbara Floch, the recipient of the Annual Charles Robinson Performance Award. Barb, I am proud to call you a dear friend! You have been a friend, mentor and an inspiration to so many of us!! Your positivity really shines! We truly love you! 6 4

plays I look out across the lake a lump in my throat a prickle of a tear as I reflect back on other trials over the years. Of all the friends I have made, the fun I have had training and competing with my dogs who love and have loved this sport as much as I do. I am so proud of everything that we have accomplished in Canada with our water program since its inception 15 years ago. At the end of the opening ceremony this year there was a wonderful surprise for me. Unveiled was a sign that will be used in photos at future trials. On it is a silhouette, an action photo of a dog and handler. The photo is of me and my amazing water partner of 12 years, Ziggy Stardust (now deceased.) To say I was overcome with emotion is an understatement. I am not usually at a loss for words but my breath was taken away and I had tears running down my face. Thank you again, to all those involved for this great honour. I was sorry that Andrew and Tracy Bilous the creators of the sign were unable to attend the trial this year and see their beautiful sign unveiled. This was the last year that I will be chairing the Ontario trials as I have moved to New Brunswick. I have handed over the torch and it is in good hands. However happily for me this is not the end as I have been invited back in 2020. I will be wearing a different hat, that of judge. What makes it more exciting is that one day of the trial will be in conjunction with the 2020 Canadian National Specialty. Thank you again, to my Co Chair Carolynne Issa, all the Water Trial Committee, all the participants, stewards and volunteers for helping make the 2019 Ontario trials so successful and so enjoyable. Roll on next summer. Until then keep having fun with your dogs. Make plans to join us at Laurel Creek. I look forward to seeing you all again next year in or out of the water.

The Charles Robinson award is an award given in memory of a man who was a leader in the water trial community. I was fortunate enough to have trialed under him, taken advice from him and to have called him a friend. He loved water work and seeing the teams succeed. He gave Catherine Gadd advice as she was starting the water program in Canada and he was the judge at the first Canadian Water Trial. The spirit of the award is team work, connection with your dog, and good sportsmanship. I saw so many teams that fit this criteria, it was a bit of a challenge to narrow it down. When it was all said and done, I felt very confident in my selection of Barbara Floch for the award. What I saw in Barbara was a caring, nurturing, competent handler. The dogs were very well trained and responded so well to her encouraging commands. Her sportsmanship is top notch. I was very impressed. Barbara joins the group of very accomplished trainers who have received the award in the past: June Murdock and Pat Vokes. Thank you for the invitation to judge your trial. It was a wonderful experience for my first time “flying solo. A special thanks to Catherine Gadd for being such a wonderful mentor and friend, not only to me but too many others. I look forward to seeing you all again, hopefully sooner rather than later! Keep training and remember, it's all about you and your dog. Keep that connection.

Judge Janice Cox Reilly The site of the PWDCC, Ontario Water Trial is absolutely stunning. What made it even nicer was the beautiful, sunny and mild weather we had. The club hospitality and organization for this event was top notch. I must say, I'm very impressed with the camaraderie and encouragement that all of the exhibitors had for each other. The result of this is a water program that is growing in leaps and bounds. To have 14 juniors entered is just amazing. I found most of the exhibitors to be well informed of the rules, sensitive to their dogs needs and happy to be there. Not only were there so many juniors but there were several teams trialing at the higher levels as well. With such a short training season, that can be a difficult accomplishment. My name is Karen Smith and I own the “best dog in the world.” Quinn is a two year old Portuguese Water Dog. I became a member of the Portuguese Water Dog Club and it has changed our lives. We have met the most amazing people and dogs. One of the reasons that I selected this breed was because of their fantastic work ethic. I attended a “fun day” with the club and was introduced to different activities to do with Barb Floch and June Murdock. Below, Barb exiting the water after the Apprentice swim.

our dogs. Waterworks caught our eye. In May, I started to introduce Quinn to the water. We loved it ! I developed a whole new bond with Quinn. I reached out to a club member/trainer and hooked up with the most amazing group of people who are dedicated to the sport. With their guidance, coaching and patience, Quinn and I progressed. Being a first time handler, Quinn had to be very patient with me. I decided to register for the Water Trials that were to be held in August. I had never attended a water trial so I watched as many as I could find on YouTube. “What did I get us into Quinn?” The weekend arrived and what a weekend it was. Fantastic sportsmanship, great weather and again a group of wonderful people involved in a sport that included “their best friend.” Laurel Creek was a perfect venue. Such a well organized and fun event. I met participants from as far away as Nova Scotia and The United States of America. I felt proud as we stood at the opening ceremonies while the national anthems were played. It took us two attempts to be successful. Quinn passed his Junior Water Dog level. I’m so proud of him! The trial at Laurel Creek was so positive. Kind words from a wonderful, compassionate judge and loud cheers from all of our supporters. And like our judge said “ everyone goes home with the best dog!” But my biggest achievement that weekend was the bond formed between myself and the wonderful people. They were there for me from the beginning. Patience with a newbie asking all kinds of questions and watching intensely with a puzzled look. From the secretary at registration time, equipment check, hospitality and beverage organizers, timers, land and gate stewards, rowers, trainers and all who volunteered. This event has so many behind the scene workers. I watched with amazement the excellent handlers with their dogs. It’s something that we will strive to achieve. I’m hooked! I’m so proud to be a member of this club. Cheers!

Petrina Lee.

Remaining prizes will be sent to the Quebec Booster happening on the August long weekend. Pat Vokes is looking to buy more mugs and ribbons for the water trial. Currently in inventory 33 mugs and 9 ribbons. Last year there were 44 passes. Ontario budgeted for 30 mugs and 30 ribbons, however, the minimum order allowed is 72 mugs and 50 ribbons. This order will cost $1,221.29. Motion by Karen to approve this expenditure with a provision to resource the supplier or look at a less expensive prize. Frank seconded. Approved. There has been some confusion regarding who is to issue the Water Trial Certificates. According to the Water Trial Manual it clearly states that the Water Trial Committee is to issue the certificates and not the hosting committee and to collect the $4.00 fee per qualifier. will send out the proposed changes and questions prior to next meeting. 2020 Speciality Lorraine Wilson is contact for Water Trial; Ann Wilson and Lorie Crouch will look after Hospitality; Roslyn will look after advertising (Waterlog, Courier & Facebook); Sharon will look after prizes and other items to be determined. We have received an email from Olga Gagne (St. Catherine’s show chair) assuring us there will be Obedience and Rally and has indicated that Dr. Chappa (Mexico) is already scheduled to judge at the St. Catherine’s Kennel Club Show. She has asked us to select a judge who can also judge many other breeds/groups if we want their club to cover the judge’s costs otherwise the PWDCC will need to pay. Date was set for Judges discussion/selection. Once determined Karen will reach out the judges to determine availability. New Business APWDC As the APWDC have their own boats there is no need for the use of the PWDCC boats. Additionally, the national club boats need to be retrofitted to meet the new step requirement. Water Trial Premium Requested that the APWDC complete their premium as per the Water Trial Manual. Once compliant Frank will send it out. Meeting Discussion was had regarding the pros and cons of having a representative from the APWDC to join our meeting on a quarterly basis. Mindy made the motion to have an Alberta Club representative participate in our meeting to discuss AB issues. Motion received no second. Motion rejected. Frank to be board liaison for the APWDC and will reach out prior to each meeting to determine items to be added to the agenda and/or news to be shared. Motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Frank. Approved.

Rescue – Frank The PWDCC was honoured to receive a generous donation from Robyn Lieffers and family, in honour of Bruce and Hallie Howe. Sadly, Bruce recently passed away and Hallie made the incredibly difficult decision to rehome their beloved 6 year old PWD, Breaker. Jennifer Byers reports that the rescue dog sent to Quebec (Maverick) at the beginning of this year is doing well. Additionally, Barney (formerly Ryder) is living the life well and off all meds. Lastly our rescue in Alberta (Radio) has been adopted by an elderly couple in Edmonton and love walking him 3 to 4 times per day. Judges’ Education – Karine Videos are available on the private site. Judges will need to apply to get a password to view. Complaints – Mindy Nothing to report

Western Branch The Western branch has reached out to the APWDC in an effort to coordinate activities to ensure twice the opportunity and twice the fun. APWDC doesn’t seem interested in this form of collaboration. Planned election tentatively November 2019

Achievement program

Ontario Branch WT was a huge success. Many posts on Facebook to that effect. No additional items to report from this branch

Annual meeting October 15th, Mindy will be out of country. Committee reports need to be completed by each and every chair. To be distributed prior to meeting. Last AGM report must be approved. Additionally, President’s report, Treasurer’s report and Secretary’s report required. No board election as all board members are less than two years on the board.

Quebec Branch Booster in August was successful with 15-16 people. A lunch was provided. Typically the entries are smaller in Quebec, however, there were 8 in conformation and a few in obedience and one in agility. Great comradery and no language issues as judges would switch to English for an English only exhibitor.

This program has been ongoing for some time. Badge ordering was twice a year – looking to move it to once per year due to work involved. This will require changes to the Policy and Procedures manual as well as the website.

Motion to adjourn meeting – Karen, seconded by Frank. Approved.

Breeder- Sandra Allen Breeder Survey Puppy list survey results show that most don’t like or use it as their puppies are sold prior to delivery. Discussion was had about going with a Breeder List for those who are members in good standing with caveats to be determined. Board was unanimous with the aspect of moving forward with a breeders list. Further details will be worked out prior to putting these details up on the website. It will be the responsibility of the breeder committee to work out the details; wording and caveats, costs, etc., to then be reviewed by the rest of the board. 2020 Holiday Foods that are Dangerous for your Dogs Poultry Bones

Various Types of Nuts

The cooking process causes poultry bones to dehydrate and become brittle. If your pet eats them, they can splinter and puncture his stomach or intestines. To prevent accidents and eliminate the temptation for counter-surfing, dispose of the carcass once the turkey is carved and clear the table when you’ve finished eating.

Macadamia nuts and pistachios are very rich in fat and can cause pancreatitis. In addition, macadamias reportedly contain an unknown toxin that might result in neurological symptoms. Pets have difficulty digesting almonds, walnuts, and pecans, and these nuts are large enough to cause an intestinal obstruction for smaller animals.

Turkey Skin

Chocolate

Many holiday foods, like turkey skin and gravy, are high in fat and difficult for pets to digest. These types of food can cause a very painful illness known as pancreatitis, which also leads to vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness. So if you’re not going to eat it, toss the turkey skin in the bin.

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to cats and dogs. Different forms of chocolate contain more or less of these substances, with dry cocoa powder having the most and white chocolate having the least.Be sure to keep your chocolate in a place safe from pets.

Alcohol

Grapes and Raisins

We all know that alcohol poisoning is a human reality. Signs that your pet is in trouble are staggering and decreased reflexes followed by a slowing respiratory rate, cardiac arrest, and death. The best way to protect your pets is for you and your guests to keep your drinks well out of the reach of curious noses.

In 1989, a computerized toxicity database helped veterinarians identify grapes and raisins as the cause of sudden kidney failure in dogs. Although the actual toxin remains unidentified, it’s clear that raisins contain a more concentrated amount – ingesting just small amounts has been fatal for both cats and dogs. Vomiting and hyperactive behavior are the initial signs of poisoning. Diarrhea can occur, and after 24 hours, the pet may be come anorexic, lethargic and depressed. Ultimately, the kidneys can fail.

Onions Garlic and onions contain thiosulphate, which causes red blood cells to burst in dogs and can lead to hemolytic anemia. Onions presents the highest risk of toxicity – eating a very small amount can have severe affects. Symptoms to watch for include shortness of breath, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Garlic contains significantly less thiosulphate, and whether pet could ingest enough to cause harm is questionable. In small doses, the health benefits of garlic appear to outweigh the potential risks.

Doughs with Yeast It may sound unlikely, but your pet’s stomach is the perfect environment for bread to rise. Raw dough eaten by your pet can expand inside his stomach and result in vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and bloating.

Nutmeg

If no objections are received by Frank Davidson, our Secretary

This popular spice, commonly used to season pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, egg nog, Nutmeg, which has mild hallucinogenic properties, can cause seizures, tremors, and central nervous system problems. In severe cases, shock and even death have been reported. Plain pumpkin and sweet potatoes are good for your pets and useful to treat both diarrhea and constipation.

Because pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other dairy products can give them diarrhea or other digestive upset which can lead to dehydration. Take care to limit the amount of dairy products your pets eat as part of other foods you might give them.
