NOTICE FOR BREEDERS The PennGen Lab at University of Pennsylvania is back to full operation and can resume testing on JDCM as well as MS (Microphthalmia Syndrome). They will be catching up the back log and should be getting those results out very soon for anyone that is still waiting. They will also be accepting both new samples and requests for dogs who already have DNA at the lab for JDCM testing. For more information on how to submit testing: Microphthalmia Test Submission Instructions, see page 14.

Branch Updates

Unfinished Business

Western Branch Sue Ailsby has plans to host an event for PWD owners and their dogs in Saskatchewan – ½ day focused on tricks and ½ day focused on grooming and health (or other topics of interest). Most likely in New Year. Maybe use Skype to share with others.

Update Policy and Procedures Manual – Mindy Postponed until next meeting as it’s due by year end.

Ontario Branch Andrew Bilous was reimbursed for the material used to make the sign for the water trial ($200.00). Additionally, the yearly donation for the use of the Laurel Creek facility was approved for $100.00. Motion to approve $100.00 donation to Laurel Creek by Frank, seconded by Shelly. Approved Quebec Branch Karine to talk with Sylvie about this branch. Held an unofficial meeting at a restaurant where dogs are allowed. Executive needs to be elected. Committee Reports Performance/Event – Karen N/R Membership – Shelley Need a meeting to plan the 2020 renewal process (convert inactive/expired members to active members). Lots of puppy members – how to convert to active members. Roslyn to help Frank determine the puppy people sort on the website. Frank to send puppy list to Shelly. Membership Committee to target puppy people and inactive/expired members.

Sharon Lapstra will help Karen Mathews with the speciality. Karen has already set up a conference call to talk about Superdog. Sharon and Karen discussed a Sunday Luncheon and possible Saturday night dinner where participants pay their own way. They also discussed judges’ bio’s and need for their photo. MJN to take care of all approvals. We will take care of our own premium list and catalogue. Sunday will have Sweeps in the morning and Speciality in the afternoon. Performance events to happen both Saturday and Sunday with Saturday dedicated to Superdog. Prizes – towels again as everyone loves them plus additional items (Tina Evans items). Sharon will need additional staff to help with this speciality. Still pending CKC approval. Once approved we will need an e-blast to ask for volunteers. Also discussed – Merchandise sales, raffles and silent auctions. New Business Membership Renewal Form and Process, and Puppy Offer Program Postponed until next meeting

Members who joined after September 1st will have membership through to end of 2020.

Breeder List Still a contentious issue, therefore this is being put on the back burner. We will take a wait and see what the PWDCA do. Additionally, the breeder committee will need to determine what rules and regulations need to be put in place and how to police it. The club will not put this forward until such time that more agreement can be made. Merchandise N/R Rescue-Frank It was initially determined that Marty (Blue) would not be accepted into the rescue program and that any expenses would not be reimbursed. Upon subsequent review, it was determined that the donation be returned to the new owners to help offset the cost of training and that Jennifer’s expense for the behaviourist be reimbursed ($332.26). Frank to call a meeting of the rescue committee to ensure protocol is followed and that nobody spends money without prior approval by the rescue coordinator. Judges’ Education – Roslyn TO REVIEW BEFORE THE MEETING: Judges Education video/seminar have been loaded on a private Facebook group. Judges can enrol, get a password and get instant access. Board please review these video/seminars prior to next meeting. Motion to approve $140.00 for judges seminars to be posted on our website by Frank, seconded by Shelly. Approved Complaints – Mindy It appears that a member will be issuing a complaint here in Canada and possibly in the USA.

Performance/Event – Karen Building a document to use moving forward for every specialty including every sport. Modeling after US. About 90% complete. Agility component has yet to be done (not being offered this specialty). CKC approval is still pending. Sharon to have an update for the board in January as will Karen regarding hospitality.

Committee Goals for 2020 One or two goals for each committee to bring forward to the board by next meeting. Annual Meeting 2020 Ideally we need to plan the annual meeting at our upcoming specialty in August 2020. We need a physical space to host this. We will have a tent at the event although we need a conference speakerphone set up for remote participation. A hotel meeting room might be better. All agree this should be the plan. Frank made a motion to adjourn this meeting; Karen seconded. Approved.

Membership – Shelley Spoke with Catherine and other committee members to put a plan together moving forward. Breeder – Sandra Breeder List – Criteria The breeder committee feels that there is no need for a breeder list, however, if there is to be one, then these rules/criteria should apply. 1. All breeding dogs must have health testing submitted 2. One oopsie breeding allowed and must notify board of oops – 6 months off list as penalty 3. Taken off Breeder List for 5 years if health testing not done and has a litter(s) – has broken club Code of Ethics so not allowed to be club member. 4. Someone needed to check for health testing 5. Cost to be on Breeder List – minimal if any 6. All Breeders on the Breeder List are to use Available Puppy website list. 7. Breeders must have a 2 year record of abiding by Code of Ethics to be on Breeder List, and if not, must wait one year to be on the list. 8. Breeders on list have to use health and litter data base. Merchandise Yolande to prepare a document for those club members that might have some inventory in their homes to close inventory for 2019. Rescue – Frank N/R Judges’ Education – Roslyn Link for the website isn’t completed yet until all the video files have been uploaded. Complaints – Mindy Complaint committee had a meeting and have decided to present the complaint to the board. After substantial investigation by this committee, we believe that there is enough evidence to support the decision to move forward with a hearing. In camera Out of camera. Karen made a motion to move forward with the complaint from a member against several other members. Sandra seconded. Approved. Moving forward each of the accused will be presented with their complaint and the process for the hearing. Unfinished Business Membership Renewal and Process Thank you to Roslyn, Yolande and Daniel for their collaborative efforts in redesigning the form and website. Beginning of the year discussion Changed the format for this meeting to determine what’s working and what’s not. Need to discuss the committee structure, due to several issues. Many board members felt overworked and as a result didn’t accomplish what many felt needed to be done. Frank felt that the committees were fine, although too many committees. Timelines to the goals of the committee need to be set. Every board member has a career, personal commitments plus board and committee duties. Each committee has members and naturally those members have lives as well. A better idea might be to determine which committee should be kept and which ones could better be structured as a project. For the most part the board liaison is doing the bulk of the work.

Most dog owners don’t spend a lot of time thinking about their own digestive processes, much less the basics of the dog digestive system. The only times we really engage with the dog digestive system are when we feed our dogs and when we trot them out to eliminate their waste. But what happens to a dog’s food from the time it enters their gaping maws to when it passes out the other end? How long does it

There are three parts of food’s journey through the small intestine. In the first part, the duodenum, chyme is treated with enzymes and hormones from the liver and pancreas, which reduce the acid level of the chyme. Puppy Eye Syndrome or Microphthalmia Microphthalmia is a syndrome that has been reported in the breed for over 20 years. This syndrome is present at birth and presents with a variety of signs and symptoms. Affected puppies that survive past weaning typically have a shortened life span with a variety of health problems reported. All breeding dogs can now be tested for status (normal or carrier) at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN), either as an add-on to existing JDCM testing (stored DNA, cost is $75.00US) or at the same time as JDCM testing is done

• Eyes may appear smaller than normal (microphthalmic) or in some cases may appear swollen and larger than normal. Eye conditions associated with this syndrome are best diagnosed by a veterinary ophthalmologist, which can be done as early as eight weeks of age. Reported eye conditions include: • Microphthalmia – compared to other pups in the litter these pups will have small eyes. • Glaucoma – abnormal eye pressure – these pups are often

(cost for both tests $120.00US). Both tests are done with a

instructions and links to UPENN or order the test(s). The PWDCC has added the Microphthalmia Syndrome-DNA test as a required test for either sire or dam effective September 1, 2020. Testing was suspended at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic (March 14, 2020) but is now again available (April 11, 2020). This syndrome exhibits eye-related conditions which are best diagnosed by a veterinary ophthalmologist after the puppy is seven weeks of age or by necropsy. Puppies may exhibit one or more of the following signs: • “Failure to Thrive” – These pups have been reported to have either normal or less than normal birth weights. Some are weak, poor nursers, and fail to gain weight. They may not grow at the same rate as their littermates and may require hand feeding. Because of this, they are more likely to develop aspirational pneumonia. • Puppies may appear normal until 3-4 weeks of age, at which time they may seem clumsier and get lost easily, often due to vision problems. • Puppies may have difficulties transitioning from nursing to solids. Once eating, they may gorge themselves and make

should not be confused with neonatal conjunctivitis (Ophthalmia neonatorum) which is a treatable infection that occurs prior to eye opening in neonatal puppies). This is why it is important for veterinary evaluation of any neonatal or pediatric PWD with an eye problem. • Cataracts • Other eye anomalies such as anterior segment dysgenesis, persistant pupillary membranes, lack of pupils or complete absence of eye parts. Some of these findings may be seen only on post-mortem pathology. If you suspect a pup in your litter has this syndrome, please contact the Chair of the Neonatal Committee of the PWDCA. Research for the mutated gene has been funded by the PWDCA and the PWDF at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN). Necropsies are currently being done for this research at Cornell which unfortunately, Canadians cannot participate in. It is also highly recommended to have a board-certified veterinary opthalmology evaluations of the litters before placing puppies in their new homes as some inherited eye diseases, including Puppy Eye Syndrome, can be detected at an early age.

unusual vocalizations (chirp) while eating. • Puppies may exhibit weakness in rear legs and difficulty walking and some puppies may be unable to control urination (incontinence). • Affected puppies often have low platelet counts, or thrombocytopenia. Platelets are involved in the ability of the body to stop or prevent bleeding by the formation of blood clots. Dysfunction or low levels of platelets predisposes to bleeding which has been reported in affected puppies.

From the Archives A rare photo of Vasco Bensaude with C.B. LEAO in 1937, the foundation dog of the modern Portuguese Water Dog. Vasco Bensaude, Secretary General of Clube Portugues de Canicultura (CPC), the Portuguese Kennel Club, sourced Leao from a fisherman in the Algarve and he was instrumental in having the PWD recognized as a breed and in creating the breed standard published by the Club in 1936. More information on the fascinating history of the PWD is covered in “The Complete Portuguese Water Dog” by Kathryn Braund and Deyanne Farrell Miller, the diffinity reference of the breed, along with the 2nd revised edition and Carla Molinari’s, “The Portuguese Water Dog”.
