NOTICE FOR BREEDERS Recommended tests for breeding: Each breeding pair must have final hip certification, annual CAER certification. Note: CAER is deferred until December 2020. Test must have been done in 2019 or 2020 previous to Covid 19 shutdown if breeding a bitch/stud dog before December 2020. Ophthalmologists were not available to provide the test.

They risk suffering on the resumption of normal life with periods of separation from the family due to work, etc. In order to make this return to normal life less painful, it may be a good idea to go outside without your dog a few times a week. The socialization of puppies, that is so important to their proper development, is also more difficult during a pandemic. It is essential for puppies and even adult dogs to regularly go out to different places where they can see dogs and humans in order to maintain good mental health. Approved. Water Bowl Prizes - Gee Bee Sports have discontinued the Ontario Branch Water trophy mug. So Pat sourced 100 bowls with the logo on one side (Pat asked but the supplier is unable to use two colours on this product) and "Qualifier" on the other side the price would be $553.00 + HST + delivery. Our previous trophies - the cobalt glass mugs were $11.29 each!! Frank made a motion to approve the purchase of these bowls, Karen seconded. Majority voted yes, approved. This was done electronically via email. Next meeting June 9th @ 7:30 pm Frank made a motion to adjourn this meeting Karen seconded. Adjourned.

Breeder Committee Sandra: Breeder list not wanted by this committee, due to club endorsement assumptions. Puppy list can be advertised any time after a breeding (even before ultrasound). Currently left up for 12 weeks. If puppies still available breeder can call in to keep the listing up for an additional 4 weeks. Suggestion of a stud dog list has been recommended by this committee. Add this to membership tab (must log into to view this). Naturally all testing must be included/documented and pictures of the dog available. Must include the disclaimer with an acknowledgment statement that the puppy buyer must click before the breeder list is revealed. Could possibly track by name and IP address (by filling their name and our website tracks their IP). This would mitigate any liability issues. Frank to speak with Roslyn about this concept. Breeders would need to apply to go on the list and sign a statement. Only accept breeders once per year to prevent increased workload. Rescue – Nothing to report Complaints – Nothing to report Water Trial – Nothing to report – cancelled in Ontario due to Covid 19 BC water trial – TBD (can judge travel?)

From Puppy Culture

Advocating for your puppy and dog A while back, a member posted about how a training instructor suddenly slammed this woman’s puppy to the floor and forced it to lie down – now the puppy trembles when it lies down and is so nervous it will not take food. I wrote this post about advocating for your dog which I think is timely right now.

I’m going to speak plainly but I don’t want this to be hurtful to anyone who has had a bad experience with their puppy. I do want to change the conversation from us being the victims with our puppies to being our puppies’ advocates. This acknowledges that, as of right now, it’s just not common knowledge to do this so I’m trying to raise awareness, not taking anyone to task. 1. Even the MOST experienced dog owners feel pressure when confronted by a person in a position of authority, such as a veterinarian, dog trainer, or professional handler. You need to have a talk track ready. I tell my puppy owners to blame it on me and tell them “I signed a contract with my breeder stating I would not do that so we’re not going to do it” I also give my puppy owners my card so they can hand it to the vet/trainer/tech /handler and say they can contact me if

3. Perhaps most importantly (and least recognized,) is our duty to foresee situations that could put our puppy in harms way. Justifiably, when one of these incidents happen we all rally round and support the puppy owner and talk about what jerks those other people are, but so what. You may be “right” but you’re the one holding the leash of a puppy who’s now messed up. Here are just a couple of examples of very common and eminently avoidable incidents that dog trainers hear about on a weekly basis:

Maybe after my dogs are over three years old, I might go to a group class where I trust the instructor, but it’s always assumption of the risk and I am on high alert at all times. Side note: I run my agility classes one dog at a time (exceptions are made for dogs that know each other) and in my dog training seminars my mantra is “The Dog On The Floor Has The Floor” and all other dogs MUST be crated. Not everyone likes it but I’m opting for safety. “Another dog jumped/attacked him when out for a walk.” Again, fists will be shaken at “those idiots” who let their dogs off leash and do not have control, and yes, verily, they are idiots and hateful and it’s all their fault, but it’s totally predictable to the point where you almost have to take some responsibility for putting your puppy in that position. I do not take my young dogs for walks anywhere where there is the possibility of people having dogs off leash. So, for the first year or two of their lives, they

Fitness Centre... Why do more than walking? When many of us think about exercising our dogs beyond walking or playing a good game of fetch, we may imagine elaborate agility courses with tunnels, seesaws and hurdles. You may think to yourself, “Yeah, I don’t have the time, money or patience for all that. Let alone, Sparky doesn’t have the attention span.” We understand. Never fear, there are simple exercises in between walking and agility that are beneficial to your companion dog’s physical and mental health that you can do at home.

Why Do More Than Walking We definitely encourage everyone to walk their companion

Types of Exercising Endurance – Endurance training, such as walking, helps condition the heart and lungs. Strength – Strength training is similar to high-intensity-interval-training, according to the dog exercise experts. It involves short and intense exercises. You may not realize it, but a good game of fetch would probably fit the bill. Balance and Core – These are possibly some of the most important exercises for dogs, yet are often the most overlooked. In fact, these exercises help cover the majority of the list above.

We at love repurposing everyday household items or using items we can find at local shops. Three exercises that fit the bill and would probably work for dogs of many fitness levels are Figure 8’s, Cavalettis and Leg Lifts. Figure 8’s Many experts distinguish between Cone Weaving and Figure 8’s. Starting out with Figure 8’s can be best done with traffic cones or trash cans. Begin with two of them several feet apart and have your companion dog go around in a Figure 8 pattern. Eventually, you can add more cones and/or tighten the space between the cones as your dog improves.

With these basic exercises, all you have to do is have your dog stand on a non-skid and flat surface, while you lift each paw. At first, don’t overdo it and just try it for a few seconds at a time, but strive to get up to 20 or 30 seconds and 10-20 repetitions. Now, many of you might be thinking this is such a minor exercise, will it even matter? Well, when tried with a dog recently, using his hind leg and gently putting an ear on his spine, the
