It’s puppy season. Beware of scams. False websites promising puppies on demand. These sites are simply scam set ups spinning stories of selling puppies for far below the normal cost because “they love the breed and want everyone to have an opportunity to have one at a reasonable cost”. For instance the regular rate for a PWD is $2700-3200 or thereabouts and Blue Valley kennels is offering them for $750. They are using stock or internet photos of various PWD puppies, giving them names and offering to deliver them to the purchasers door using the services of their puppy nanny. If you or your friends are interested in a new PWD puppy read Scam Alert on our website and check out Available Puppies and Health sections of our website for information to assist you in your search.
Time to renew your PWDCC membership for 2021. To renew, log onto the pwdcc.org home page and click the membership button. If your information hasn’t changed you can use the online form or the pdf form, just sign your name and enclose payment with you charge card or use the PayPal option.
Breeders The Available Puppies Listing on the club website is open to our breeder members for a cost of $20.00 per litter. This program supports PWDCC Rescue and gives you the opportunity to promote your ethical breeding practices! The forms are on www.pwdcc.org from the home page click the membership button. To be eligible to post a litter, a breeder must be a member in good standing of the PWDCC for at least one year. When a bitch is owned by two or more breeders, all breeders have to be members of the PWDCC in good standing. The exception to this rule is if the co-breeder is a resident of the United States or other international location.
The PWDCC Puppy Program is open to all PWDCC breeders, not only those who participate in the PWDCC Available Puppies Listing. It gives puppy people an introduction to the club and the world of pure bred dogs. Puppy membership benefits include the Waterlog, club events, access to archived Waterlogs and the searchable membership directory. This gives them opportunities to meet other puppy and experienced owners to network about resources in their neighbourhood and more. For just $1.00 per puppy, the breeder can choose to purchase the membership on behalf of their owners or make this part of their purchase package. A win-win for all!

ThePresident’sLetter Hello Members, Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Board to wish you all a belated Happy New Year. After a difficult 2020, Canada is very slowly emerging from the myriad restrictions due to Covid-19. Some small group socially distanced classes are available again parts of the country and many of our dogs have newfound trick skills. The array of offerings of on-line dog training courses and webinars seems

As you know, the Club was forced to cancel our 2020 National Specialty and all Water Trials due to the ever-changing restrictions across the country. Dog shows were cancelled as were most performance events. The Board has decided not to plan a 2021 National Specialty as there are very few shows available to which we can attach our Specialty and all activities may be cancelled with little notice. Travel restrictions may also hamper any efforts to gather in one part of the country
One such improvement would be the inclusion of a Complaint Form and a Response to Complaint Form. This would help to streamline that process to ensure that the elements required to submit a formal complaint would be included before any consideration given to eliminate the several unsubstantiated that the Club receives. We would also take steps to more stringently safeguard the confidentiality of complaints to protect all parties involved.

President, PWDCC
As we commence 2021 with so many restrictions, I have put the question to our Board of how we can serve the current membership and attract new members, particularly new puppy parents, to the Club. While we are brainstorming to come up with new offerings and ideas, we would be very interested to hear suggestions from you, our members of what the Club could offer you.

2021 Board Election and Process The slate was presented to the membership and nobody stepped forward to present an alternative. Therefore the slate as presented has been accepted and only needs to be formally announced at the AGM AGM Section 1. At meetings of the club, the order of business so far as the character and nature of the meeting may permit shall be as follows: • Roll Call – 10% of membership required to have a quorum. Go-to-meeting can handle our AGM as our membership is up to 150 •Minutes of the last meeting • Report of the President • Report of the Secretary • Report of the Treasurer • Report of Committees • Election of Officers and Board (at annual meeting) • Election of new members • Unfinished business • New Business • Adjournment Frank to send the invite to the members with the accompanying documents one week prior to the AGM. Committee report Committee structure This is now complete. A message was sent to the membership about why we have committees and now projects. There were no comments from anyone so this new structure should stand. Karine to mention this at the AGM. Breeder Roslyn sent a message out to the committee members about continuing to be on this committee. Replies were from all but Gillian. At this time Deirdre and Leslie have agreed to remain on this committee with Roslyn. Rescue Nothing to report other than we are receiving inquiries (available rescue dogs) via phone or email at a rate of about 4-5 per week. Complaints N/R
National in 2021 Frank investigated the availability of Laurel Creek Conservation to host a national specialty (all aspects – confirmation, agility and water). This would be a perfect site (social distancing would not be a problem). However the Laurel Creek website was not taking bookings. Frank sent an email that has yet be replied to. Their answering system stated to leave a message however at this time no reservation could be made. At this point we can’t commit to a National in 2021. PWDCC Achievement badges CKC has not submitted any documentation and as such we have not been able to process and achievement badges. Contractual Issues The PWDCC is not able nor responsible for dealing with any contractual issues. The CKC appear to be ignoring contracts between individuals and then these individuals come to the PWDCC to seek help or file a complaint. For example party A has a non breeding contract and decides to breech that contract a breed the dog anyway. They then go on to register these pups with the CKC who apparently have no concern with the original non breeding contract. Should a complaint like this come to the PWDCC as a breach of our code of ethics how should we proceed? As this is a business contract issue the PWDCC would not intervene. That said, should the original breeder in this case have won their case in court, then the complaint could be considered. The meeting went in camera Membership Retention going forward we need to build a strong team to work on retaining puppy members & bringing back expired members
Water Trial N/R – Frank to reach out to Catherine for a Water Trial Committee report for the AGM.
Next Meeting We will hold a meeting in November and invite our newest members so that they might get climatized to the process. There will be no meeting in December.

President’s Report Good evening and thank you for attending the PWDCC 2020 Annual General Meeting. It has certainly been a strange time since our last AGM Oct 15 2019. The Covid pandemic has affected everyone in many ways and as a Dog Club we have seen the majority of Dog Events being cancelled in Canada. While some events continue in the USA I personally have not heard of any Canadians who have taken the chance of attending. As you have seen in the minutes of the 2019 AGM the club was working with a committee structure and as we managed this structure throughout the year it became apparent that some of these committees were in fact “projects” as opposed to year round committees. As such we amended the day to day operation of the club to reflect these changes and notified members of same via email on August 27. You already receive a written report from each committee, if you have question about them, you will be able to address them at the end of the AGM meeting. As a follow up to the 2019 AGM and the changes I already mentioned, I would like to update you on a few items mentioned in the minutes for Committees that have now become projects.
CANADIAN NATIONAL We had planned on hosting a Canadian National Specialty for 2020. Planning was well underway when the pandemic changed everything. This Specialty would have included Conformation, Water Trial, Obedience Trial, Rally Trial, Superdog and social events. I would like to thank the Steering Committee who diligently worked on this event which unfortunately was cancelled due to the pandemic.
ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS As mentioned in the 2019 report badges would be applied for yearly in March and you can expect the next request for submissions to happen in March 2021 As you know, CKC is far behind in issuing title certificates but have informed members that they should have at least all Conformation certificates out by year end. Let’s hope so! Speaking of achievements I would like to personally congratulate the team of Lorie Crouch and Oscar on their achievements on being the first Canadian PWD to attain the Master Water Dog Title, First PWD to achieve GMOTCH (Grand Master Obedience Champion), First PWD to achieve ROCH (Rally Grand Champion) including several HiT (High In Trial).

The pandemic has provided the opportunity for fraudulent activity in puppy sales and is an issue that we as a board felt was important to address. Scammers are accepting deposits for puppies that do not exist. One of our Board members acted as a puppy buyer to go through the process to see exactly how it worked. From what we saw the initial information was very professional and inclusive which fooled many unsuspecting puppy buyers.

Karine Simard PWDCC President
Communication Report Frank Davidson took over position as Secretary on November 1, 2018. His main role is working with the executive communicating information via email to membership. Additionally regional branches/clubs might require mass communications from time to time which is part of the role of the communication secretary as well. That said 2020 has been a very quiet year due to the current pandemic. Frank plans to remain on the board through 2020 and into the term 2021/2022.

COMMITTEE REPORTS The Breeder Committee The Breeder Committee met throughout 2020 to discuss the board’s request to investigate creating a breeder list for the club website. The committee didn’t recommend going forward with this. To provide some perspective a little history of the Breeder List, Puppy Page on the club website. This has been a contentious issue since it was first discovered that some breeders were not complying with health testing recommendations and also breeding underage dogs. Attempts were made to include accepted testing in Europe, U.S. and Canada. And finally in 2014 we pulled back to just include U.S. accepted testing as OVC discontinued their database. Some history: The PWDCC Breeder program was established in May 2006 to support the club’s rescue effort and to promote ethical member breeders. Breeders could participate in the list, fee was $100 plus $50 for a website link. Litter information could be sent to the Program Coordinator who would refer inquiries. Available puppy web page set up November 2007 required health testing to be sent into the coordinator, cost was $20.00 per litter. Then the board fine-tuned the program with the following updates to address issues as they appeared: Updated March 18, 2010 To qualify for this program, breeders must be members of the PWDCC for at least one year before being eligible to be on Breeders’ List. (We had people joining the club to effectively go on the list immediately) Updated January 16, 2011 Breeder list updated January 31st of each year with renewed participants. (to make management easier, rather than adding people throughout the year)

FEBRUARY 2021
Updated 2014 Breeder Program Policy As a breeder member you agree to support health testing for our breed in your breeding program. Both sire and dam need to be registered in the PWD Health and Litter data base. Available Puppy Listing with full disclosure of litter information (i.e. sire and dam) and health testing information available for the public to view. Litters posted 4 weeks prior to whelping. And multiple litters can be posted at once. You can post additional litters during the calendar year for no additional cost. The problem with the Breeder List is: • Member breeders joined for years and never posted a litter thereby never having to provide health testing. • Breeders joined and referred inquiries to nonmembers and member breeders who didn’t join. • We know of many members who are breeders who don’t routinely health test. Health testing doesn’t mean you’re an ethical breeder but it’s a basic requirement of such. Breeders would use a link and state they are Breeder members on their own websites to infer the club’s endorsement, much like they use CKC membership or kennel licenses to infer credibility. • People don’t read and consider the club’s caveat statement and assume an endorsement of the breeders listed. And it reflects badly on the club having a list of breeders who don’t follow our Code of Ethics, and testing recommendations but, none the less, are listed on our website. Perhaps the solution is to have a Breeder List where: • Every litter bred must be on the Available Puppy List (thereby ensuring testing is done). People who object, “our litters are all pre-sold, I don’t need help selling” should be reminded they have an opportunity to educate which is mandate of the club. And if so, why do they want a Breeder List?
The Rescue Committee The Rescue Committee had a pretty quiet year overall with rescues. There was only one. That said we had an extremely busy year fielding inquires (both phone calls and emails) regarding the availability of dogs, how the process works, how and where to find a quality breeder. Since the start of the pandemic we have been getting about 4 – 5 inquires per week. The Complaint Committee Over the past 2 years there have been several complaints lodged against members of the PWDCC. There have been 3 hearings, one member accepted the complaint against her admitting all components of the complaint and voluntarily accepted a disciplinary decision. Two complainants declined to provide any evidence of the complaints lodged. The complaints procedure has been revised to include a complaints form, setting out the requirements and process for complaints. This is included with updates to the policy and procedures manual. The Water Trial Committee Early this year the Water Trial Committee approved a record number of six trials for the 2020 water trial season. Portuguese Water Dog Club of Alberta. August 28, 29, 30 at Dickson Dam,Innisfail Alberta. Portuguese Water Dog Club Of Canada Ontario Branch. August 14,15 Laurel Creek, Waterloo,Ontario. Portuguese Water Dog Club Of Canada Western Branch. September 6,7 Herold Provincial Park, Salmon Arms BC. The Committee were very pleased to approve the Western Branch trials. These were to be the first trials the Branch were holding in a beautiful lake and stunning location in BC. Sadly for the Canadian Water program and all the very eager teams who planned to compete, all trials were cancelled due to safety reasons and restrictions for Covid 19. Hopefully in the summer of 2021 trials across Canada will be able to be held as usual. There is no other business to report. Members of this committee are: Catherine Gadd, Lorraine Wilson, Karen Matthews, Audrey Hawthorne and Andy Gamache
• If it is discovered that non-tested or underage dogs were bred by a Breeder List participant, there should be real repercussions: they are removed from the list with no refund for a period of say 2 years, or ? Or their membership is suspended for a period of fill in the period or ?? • All participants of the Breeder List must use the New Puppy Program (joining their new puppy people to the club for one year period, cost is $1.00/pup). • The CKC stud book listing, available in August of the following year, can be used to verify litters, ages of sire/dam. This requires some ‘policing’, it would take less than a day to do. I have done summaries and searchable spreadsheets of the stud dog directories. You can sort by column heads. • Expand the term of the Available Puppy List from 12 weeks to 16 weeks, that is on breeding until pups go home. That way the sire and dam are shown with health testing.

Fran Archambault February 18, 1947 ~ November 7, 2020 Past President of the PWDCC Fran, loving wife, mother of five, grandmother of nine and great grandma of one, passed away at age 73, after a hard fought battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. She graduated as an RNA, and practiced nursing in obstetrics. On February 4, 1967 she married the love of her life Albert Archambault. Together, they raised two daughters and three sons. Fran always on the go, had many interests and talents. She was gifted at sewing, quilting, and stain glass. Fran bred, showed and trained Portuguese Water Dogs (Portside) and had Afghans also. Her dogs titled in Conformation in Canada and the U.S., (she was an unofficial member of the Nutmeg PWDC and a fixture at their annual specialty in June) in Obedience, Agility and Water. Fran was active in the PWDCC, she was president 2000-2002 and on the board through 2003. She was a founding member of W.A.D.E. (Working Aquatic Dog Enthusiasts), in 2002, an early water training group that went on to organize Water Trials in Canada. Together with her dogs, she volunteered with St. John’s Ambulance therapy dog program, visiting schools, helping children learning to read and providing comfort to patients in the cancer and palliative care wing of the Mississauga Credit Valley Hospital. Education was important to Frances. She had a PR diploma from Humber College. Later in life she went back to school and graduated with a BA from the University of Toronto. She loved travel, making new friends, cottaging and sailing. Her love for a chat, witty sense of humour, compassion and enduring strength will be remembered. Frances is survived by her husband Al and their five children, Melody, Marylee, Peter, Nathaniel and Andrew. Grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Madeline, Aderyn, Alexandra, Findlay, Luc, Elizabeth, Raven, and great grandchild Madison.

An ICON in The PWD World
Lorraine Wilson November 6, 1955 - December 30th, 2020 Gone, but NEVER forgotten! As some of you may have heard our dear friend and mentor. Lorraine Wilson, passed away on Dec 30 after a fight against cancer. If you are just finding out about this our apologies. Lorraine was instrumental along with Cathy Gadd in bringing water work to the PWDCC for all of us to enjoy. She had a very successful breeding program, BigBay Reg’d, and a training school, 4 Paws Training and Pet Services. Many of us in the PWD community have had the opportunity to experience her knowledge, understanding, encouragement and dedication to our breed and water training. Lorraine was not just a trainer, friend or mentor to many of us. She was our best friend, and some of us would say, family. She was there whenever we needed her. She helped us see things differently and always assisted with the best advice, to help us (personally and also dog-related). She was always proud of all of her students/mentees’ achievements, no matter how small, and would argue when she felt she was right! – despite that, she would always admit when she was wrong! She was a breast cancer survivor over 6+ years, she handled her treatments with poise and grace, and never missed a practice. She was still always there for everyone whenever we needed her! She was trustworthy and reliable. The breast cancer, sadly metastasized, and despite her very strongest fight... she passed away peacefully at home, surrounded
by the love of her husband, sons and sisters. She was a dedicated wife to Andy, and mother to two awesome boys, Scott and Greg. Lorraine was one of the strongest women we knew, and never let anything or anyone keep her from doing what she loved, and was passionate about. Lorraine was an icon in the Portuguese Water Dog community bringing so many people together from her own personal breeding program to get involved. Our programs with our amazing dogs all stem from her efforts. Lorraine meant SO much to SO many (too many to name), and we are so blessed to have had her in our lives, and she was also blessed to have all of us. It's hard to believe she is no longer with us, as her love and mentorship will live on with many of us... she touched SO MANY lives! We miss her dearly and are often thinking about calling her, and feel lost without her. Simply heartbroken!
Brawna Levy and Carolynne Hardy Issa will be forever grateful for Lorraine introducing us to water work, as her passion has become our passion! We love and miss you Lorraine!

Cognitive
Sensory
Here are some ideas for enrichment activities which can help your dog engage in different ways. Each of the categories cater to the type of stimulation dogs need to help them feel satisfied and fulfilled. Try to pick 1 activity in each of the categories to try so that your dog can experience different sensations everyday. Try not to do the same thing more than three times in the week to keep enrichment interesting for your dog, even if they love it. Activities which you do regularly can become part of a routine and can loose their enrichment factor. Modify the enrichment to suit your dog’s level of engagement. Remember to start easy with a new activity. Enrichment should always be fun,
finds them individually rewarding.
