The PWDCC announces a one year trial of a Breeders’ List on pwdcc.org

The Board is proposing a trial of a Breeders’ List under the following criteria:

• Member for at least one year (as per litter listing)

• All litters posted on the Available Puppies webpage (where all health testing is provided) ($20.00 per litter)

• All puppies sold with New Puppy Membership ($1.00 per puppy, note breeders have the option of having the puppy owner pay for this)

• All puppies registered with the CKC by the breeder

• When a bitch is owned by two or more breeders, all breeders have to be members of the PWDCC in good standing. The exception to this rule is if the co-breeder is a resident of the United States or other international location.

• Any stud dog owned or co-owned by someone on the breeder list must only breed with breeders where the bitch is fully health tested

Non-compliance, checked by CKC stud dog directory released typically in August the following year, will result in immediate removal from the PWDCC Breeder List with no refunds.

NOTICE FOR BREEDERS

Recommended tests for breeding:

Annual CAER certification.

CAER is deferred for 2023 due to Ophthalmologists are not available to provide the test except in clinics where available.

Non Compliance consists of:

• Not reporting a litter.

• Not individually registering puppies in a litter that is registered.

• Not registering a litter

Additionally, “oops” litters, an accidental breeding, where health testing is not complete will be handled

• 1st oops litter, must be reported

• 2nd oops litter, removed from the list for minimum of 6 months or the remainder of the year.

• 3rd opps litter, no longer eligible.

The Board approved some modifications to the Buyer Beware section of the website, removing the number of litters considered to be ethical.

In the PWDCC Code of Ethics section 2 Breeders: “register all tests in the PWDCA Health and Litter Log (https://hll.pwdca.org/tblmember/sign_in).”

The PWDCA HLL database is non-functioning and is being replaced by the PWDCA with the Berner Garde system. Once the new system is operational, the Board will review PWDCC’s participation in the database.

Happy Spring everyone!

Although we’re leading up to Summer this is the PWDCA National Specialty Issue which took place last August, 2022.

As anyone who was there or who looked at the results online, the Canadian contingent was extremely successful this year. It was great to see so many Canadian Dogs attending.

It’s exciting that the PWDCA National Specialty (Conformation) was won by a Canadian bred and owned dog. Big Congratulations go to Roslyn Eskind and Leo Hui on the Best of Specialty win of their dog CH Seabury Vulcan Cool Shades (Oakley).

Also, in the Best of Breed competition, an Award of Merit went to CH Armada’s Let It Rain (Splash) AS WELL as Best Veteran Dog (9-11). Both impressive wins for breeders Lana Stewart, Tracy Brown and Audrey Hawthorne and owners Michelle Hardman, Tracy Brown and Audrey Hawthorne.

I find it Interesting to note that 2 of the top 4 Veteran dogs (7-9) and 3 of the 4 top Veteran Dogs, (9-11) were Canadian. That’s a flattering indicator of the staying power of our seniors. Canadian dogs also won the in Open Dog and Open Bitch classes. Congratulations to all the winning and placing conformation breeders and owners.

Our members also had excellent showings in all the performance classes as well with 3 qualifiers in Working Water Dog and 2 Masters. We had winners and dogs placing in the top 4 in Agility, Obedience, Scent and Rally.

All in all, I think that our members punched way above our Canadian weight!

Also in this issue are the results of last August’s Alberta Water Trial. It’s wonderful to see so many qualifiers at all levels! Pretty impressive for a land-locked province, with few lakes, making finding practice sites challenging often entailing very long drives.

I want to thank all the breeders, owners and handlers for showing off the versatility of our wonderful breed in such a wide array of events at Specialties, Water Trials and performance events all over the country.

I know that now that the weather is encouraging us to get outside everyone is gearing up for summer performance events, conformation and Water Trials in particular.

Good luck to everyone in your summer endeavors.

2022 PWDCC Water Trial Results Alberta

August 5-7, 2022

Judge Karen Pratt Dickson Point August 5-8, 2022

We welcomed Karen Pratt as our judge for trial at Dickson Point, Gleniffer Reservoir near Innisfail, Alberta. The weather was great. Our water trial site has clear water, gentle slope into the water. We also have a dry camping area. The dogs were pumped and ready to go.

On Saturday night we had a potluck supper which was well attended. We all enjoyed a good meal, and no one was hungry.

We were so proud of the many teams that participated.

Thank-you to our Judge Karen Pratt for all her words of encouragement. Also, a thank-you to all the volunteers and many hands that made this trial a success.

Thank-you to Renee Sobie for generous donations to our water trial. Thank-you to Cheguis and Son for donating towels to all the passing teams.

We had one dog in the Seniors Challenge, we hope to have more next year. Thank-you to Audrey Hawthorne for judging.

PWDCC Treasurer’s Report, Nov 30, 2022

Discussion around changing the western branch to a BC branch or even adding a BC branch. For the club to maintain our inclusive position/nature, changing the branch name or creating a separate branch all together makes very little sense. The board suggests that the BC individuals create a slate, put it forward and a formal western branch would then exist.

Changes needed to be completed to reflect the new board and rescue coordinator. Also looking for an Ontario member to do rescue centrally. Frank to remain on the complaint committee. Frank to forward documents about Speaking of Dogs rescue to Jennifer.

CKC Breed Survey due December 15th. We discussed various aspects of the breed per CKC guideline. Mindy decided to write this up and allow the rest of the board to review prior to sending to the CKC.

Currently and issue in the members only section of our website. Has been causing issues navigating the member’s only section especially during the membership renewal process.

is a deficit for the month of October mainly because a few expenses came in from the Specialty and Specialty Revenues have been booked in previous months. Diane pointed out that there is a follow up item for $100. There is an

expense that has been booked twice (GRCA gratuity - see Sept results). Diane suspects that one of the Sorrento refunds was not booked. This does not change the bottom line but a reclassification may have to be made. Diane to follow up in November.

Some people buying 2-year membership. When to recognize this revenue – board agreed to book the second year membership renewal in the correct year ()… so differing it.

Roslyn discussed adding genetic test for CDDY to our testing requirements or recommendations. Not mandatory yet by PWDCA. Chondrodystrophy (CDDY) refers to the relative proportion between a dog’s legs and body, wherein the legs are shorter and the body longer as well as spinal disk issues. There are multiple different variants that can cause a markedly chondrodystrophic appearance as observed in Dachshunds, Corgis (more common) and now PWD’s (rare). Roslyn to do an e-blast to advice membership of this to get their feedback.

We need to think about when and where for the next specialty in 2024.

Breeder Report Roslyn re Breeder List

Discuss inclusion of all litters to be listed in order to be on breeders list and listing requirements (length of time for listing) as one (1) breeder was not in favour of this. Since all liters are public knowledge should an individual do their research (although most do not), it was decided to have litters posted for only 4 weeks (instead of 16 weeks as originally proposed) however could repost those liters for an additional 4 weeks to maximum of 16 weeks. Breeders may also post liters, however, not be on the breeders list if they so decide. NOTE this is a 1 year trial to determine the level of support.

Rescue Report Jennifer re A pet owner who has reached out to Jennifer about a dog from Kyessiline Kennel. Dog has been properly socialized, is currently on meds to help with anxiety but has a bite history. The PWDCC can not take a dog with bite history and the dog’s vet believes this dog should be put down. Sadly this client called Kyessiline, explained the situation and this breeder hung up on her.

MEMBERSHIP

Pat is looking to be removed as the treasurer for our water trials. Frank will send an eblast to get a volunteer.

Discussion around revenue recognition during membership collection. We have been taking in revenue in October for our membership however we have been differing this revenue until the next calendar year. Roslyn made a motion to change our accounting procedures from an accrual basis to a cash basis, Frank seconded. Approved. Moving forward the PWDCC will recognize revenue as it comes in including early membership payments. Diane and Mindy have update the signatories at the bank.

Breeder Report Roslyn re Breeder List Please have ready Roslyn’s proposal for discussion. Roslyn presented the breeder committee’s plans for implementing a breeder list. A discussion was had regarding removing the requirement to enter all litters in the PWDCA Health and Litter database in Requirements for Member Breeders, or movin to the Berner Data Base System that the PWDCA is adapting once it’s fully functional. Jennifer made a motion to approve the breeder list as set out and recommended by the breeder committee, Shelly seconded. Approved. A modification will be made to detail/describe an “oops litter”. New CDDY test (also referred to as intervertebral disc disease, IVDD) will not be added at this time. The necessary changes to the Code of Eethics must be

New Water Trial Judge Lorie Crouch

I met my first Portuguese Water Dog in 1995 on a soccer pitch in Mississauga and immediately fell in love with Yogi, a wavy brown intact male. The following year we welcomed Cola, a black and white Irish out of Pennrico’s Partial Eclipse, into our home and what a joyful bundle of love we enjoyed for the next 15 1/2 years! Our three children grew up under her watchful eye. A month after losing her I met breeder Karen Matthews and the wild and crazy Oscar came home on my birthday eleven years ago. Karen introduced us to water work and it was love at first splash! We entered our first trial at eight months and now Oscar and 5 year old Journey are trialling at the Master level.

Becoming a Water Trial judge for the PWDCA has been an extraordinary experience of perseverance (due to border closure), learning, friendship, travel and joy. Watching these magnificent creatures working with their handlers doing what they were bred to do will always take my breath away. Thank you to all those who supported my dream and encouraged me to follow it. I look forward to seeing you and your best friend at the water’s edge!
