ThePresident’sLetter Happy Spring Everyone, Firstly, I’d like to add my personal congratulations to Brenda Brown of Baywood Kennels. I met Brenda not too long after I acquired my first Portuguese Water Dog in 1995. She was one of the very few breeders in western Canada Brenda at the time and has been a constant leader in our breed for over 30 years. Our last Waterlog congratulated her outstanding achievements as a Multi-Discipline Dog winner with her extraordinary Mission. Her long list of accomplishments as a breeder, performance handler and mentor are highlighted in her daughter, Kathy’s article below. The PWDCC congratulates Brenda on her success and a lifetime of dedication to our breed. On behalf of the Club I would also like to thank Carolynne Issa for her years of leadership of the PWDCOntario branch as she has decided to step down from her executive role. For many years Carolyn has been involved in the Branch executive, actively participated and led water events and has managed the Branch merchandise. Thank you, Carolyn. If anyone is interested in taking part in the PWDCOntario branch please contact Frank Davidson, frank@pwdcc.org. As you can see and feel, spring has sprung in many parts of the country and after two summers of little activity our members are gearing up for a full season of water trials. We have five trials scheduled this summer in 3 different provinces. The first opportunity for a Club event will be at the end of May with a Beginner and Advanced Land Training camp sponsored by the PWDCOntario. The opening water camp/trial will be held in British Columbia at beautiful Shushwap Lake at the end of June where Spring springs a little earlier than most other regions. Early August shortly after the Alberta Kennel Club Classic, the APWD Club will be hosting their Annual trial followed by the National Specialty Water Trial and PWDCO Water trials August 11 and 12. For anyone travelling to the PWDCA National Specialty the week following, there will be another opportunity to trial. We are excited to be able to host the PWDCC National Specialty once again, including a scent trial for the first time. Will Barn Hunt be next? For those of you who are unfamiliar with this new and exiting sport, see the article on Farley and his achievements on Page 10. Lastly, if you haven’t joined the PWDCC Face Book Group – please do. Advertise events, post interesting, useful, or just fun PWD related information or invite fellow members to join you for a meet – up. If you can’t find your invitation to join the group, please contact Frank@pwdcc.org to send you a new link. Wishing you success in whatever challenges you seek this year. Mindy Selby PWDCC President

It’s all in the family...

a remarkable two weekends of shows At the Battle River Canine Association, March 2527, there were 19 Portuguese Water Dogs entered in Conformation, Obedience and Rally Obedience events and 17 of them were bred by Baywood Portuguese Water Dogs. At Red Deer, April 1-3, we celebrate three New Canadian Champions and three different Baywood Best of Breed winners and two different Baywood dogs placing in the Working Group. Perhaps a first for a kennel! We don’t have a huge breeding program up here in Edmonton, Alberta but what we do have is a leader in Brenda Brown who has dedicated 32 years to this breed and leads us all by example, mentors, encourages and occasionally volun-tells us into performance events (especially PWD Water Work!) I want to thank our incredible owners of our family pets and performance dogs, without them these type of milestones wouldn’t be possible. They are engaged, dedicated to their dogs and willing to try new things. After 32 years, so many of our owners are repeat customers or have multiple Baywood dogs. We are proud to have performance homes seek our dogs out and ask about upcoming breedings for performance prospects. As well, we have an incredible group of professionals who are our very important support team: Veterinarians, Canine Body Workers, Instructors, Trainers, Photographers, Advertisers, Professional handlers, and Groomers. This obviously isn’t just about us either, paramount are those PWD breeders who came before us and those who continue to support us by allowing us to use their dogs for our breeding program or inquire about our dogs for their programs. Must-Have Supplements For Older Dogs from dogsnaturallymagazine.com As your dog ages, his body starts to weaken. He won’t get as much nutrition out of his food. His liver won’t be able to push out as many toxins… and his brain will begin to slow down. That’s why senior dogs need a boost as they age. Natural supplements for senior dogs help them get what they need to live a healthy and comfortable life. So let’s look at 5 important supplements for older dogs … Best Senior Dog Supplements Your dog’s gut health is the foundation of his immune system, so probiotics and prebiotics are especially important as he ages. Probiotics For Senior Dogs As your dog gets older, his microbiome can become unbalanced. And that’s a problem. Your dog’s microbiome is made up of bacteria and other microorganisms that live all over his body. The more populated and diverse your dog’s microbiome is, the healthier he’ll be. But with age, the diversity and number of bacteria and

Burdock root – regulates blood sugar, helps prevent cancer, supports organ health and reduces inflammation. Dandelion greens – helps with detoxification, stimulates appetite and supports the liver. Digestive Enzymes For Older Dogs Digestive enzymes help break down food so that your dog can absorb nutrients better. While dogs produce digestive enzymes naturally, as they age, production slows. That’s why senior dogs are more likely to have enzyme deficiencies. Deficiencies can affect … • The immune system • Detoxification • Hormones

If it helps, you can add water or broth to the supplement. But never put digestive enzymes on hot food as the heat will kill them. Antioxidants For Senior Dogs As your dog gets older, his body becomes more susceptible to oxidative stress… especially in his brain. Oxidative stress happens when your dog’s body has an excess of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that attack other cells, damaging DNA, proteins, and cell membranes. This can lead to premature aging and chronic disease.

Cordyceps can help support healthy skin, liver and kidneys.

The most popular source of omega-3s for dogs is fish oil.

How To Add Vitamin C To Your Dog’s Diet Natural whole food sources of vitamins and minerals are the best choice for dogs. Blueberries are rich in vitamin C, which is another great reason to feed them to your dog. Broccoli is also a great choice for adding vitamin C to your dog’s dish. In fact, 1 lb of broccoli has more vitamin C than 2.5 lbs of oranges. Omega-3 Fatty Acids For Senior Dogs Inflammation is generally a good thing, helping to heal injuries and acute disease. But chronic inflammation is different. It’s a prolonged response that can affect your dog’s immune function and lead to premature aging. First for a Portuguese Water Dog Canadian Barn Hunt Champion RATCH Kortun’s Farley Hammerschmidt, RI,

Farley is affectionately know as a Portuguese non-Water Dog.

RATCZ8B, TDX, UTD, TD (AKC) SDN, SD-S, RN,

But give him something to do with his nose and you can’t stop

RA (AKC), CRAMCL, CRNT, ETD, PKD-N Kortun’s Farley Hammerschmidt has the distinct honour of being the first and only Portuguese Water Dog in Canada to earn a Barn Hunt Champion (RATCH) title. And, according to Barn Hunt Association stats, he is only the 8th PWD in US/Canada to receive this title since BHA began in 2014. Barn Hunt is a fast fun sport for both dogs and handlers.

him. He also excels at Tracking where he is hoping to receive his Canadian Tracking Champion title in April. He has recently started Scent Work and excelled at his first two trials. In addition to using his nose, Farley plays at CKC Rally, CARO, Parkour, and Tricks.

Farley and Cathy Hammerschmidt live in Chilliwack, BC with his PWD brother Jaxx and human dad Roman.

Depending on the level, dogs must locate and indicate on a certain number of tubes containing live rats. In the time allotted, they must also climb on the bales of hay and complete a tunnel of varying difficulty, again based on the level. Barn Hunt is now a sport recognized by CKC and AKC. Team Farley, who belong to the Fraser Valley Ratters Club, entered their first Barn Hunt trial in September 2020 where he received his Instinct and Novice titles in one weekend. Fast forward one year, despite fewer trials due to COVID-19, and he received his RATCH title in October 2021. He is on track to receive his RATCHX title at Regionals in September. To get RATCH title, Farley had to pass: 3 Novice, 3 Open, 3 Senior, 5 Master A and 10 Master B runs. At Farley’s level, there is an unknown number of tubes between 1 and 5 (predetermined by random draw) along with tubes containing just rat bedding to make a total of eight. The dog must find all the rats, do a climb and a tunnel. His handler must determine when he is finished hunting and call ‘clear’. Farley’s indication that he has finished hunting is to go stand on the bales and look at the crowd - always good for laughs from the spectators! Farley and his mom also play Crazy 8s - a fast paced game where they have 2 minutes to find a maximum of 8 rats, climb on the bales of hay and do a tunnel. A perfect run would score 100 points but they are still trying for that. We have had several 80s and a couple 90s but never that Clean Run. He received his CZ8 Bronze in April 2021, will receive CZ8 Silver at his next trial in April 2022 and is on track to get Gold this summer.

Do you know what a titer test is? A titler test (pronounced Tight-err) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies in your pet’s blood. Basically, it’s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet at that moment It’s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history. According to immunologist Dr. Ronald Schultz, Ph.D “Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may inchase the risk for adverse reactions”. Be sure to ask your veterinarian about titer testing the next time you get that remainder call. More information can be found at www.hemopet.org PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

Committee Reports Breeder Report: N/R Rescue Report: N/R Complaint’s Report: N/R Water Trial: BC, Alberta, details to be brought forward in January. Unfinished Business Website issues: Roslyn waiting for a quote from our webmaster for French site. Membership retention and new membership appeal – Facebook Group: Shelly has set up a FB group Frank discovered that the Group link is only good for 48 hours or 20 clicks so many members found that the link sent had failed. Frank has been sending individual invites as they come in. We still have much work to do regarding uploading content and enticing group activity. Shelly plans to post a calendar to show what will be posted and when CKC Rules of Eligibility: Final version after breeder input was set to CKC. CKC has not accepted our height range as written. CKC want vague and no specifics. Mailing Package to puppy members who renew as full members: 50 grams postage is $1.30 (welcome letter, fridge magnet envelope and stamp). Would that help with retention? 2022 National Specialty: Sweepstakes judge has been selected and he will do ringside judges’ mentoring.

Committee Reports Breeder Report 2019 and 2020 CKC stud book has been released. Shows how many breeding by specific breeder. Some of the numbers of litters are astonishingly huge. Some of these breeding’s haven’t been registered with the CKC. This leaves one questioning? As this is public domain, should it be published on our website? Roslyn to follow up with our CKC rep and get back to us via email. Rescue Report Jennifer still working on trying to rehome 8 year old PWD with anxiety/reactivity issues and seizures, on meds. Roslyn has reached out to the USA as well. Dog still with owners and at wits end and ready to euthanize the dog.

New Business Plan for AGM: proposed to be run during our specialty. Holiday greeting: posted in Waterlog and on Facebook Next meeting Jan 11, 2022 Frank made a motion to adjourn, Shelly seconded. Approved. 14

Should you let dogs sniff your hand? The answer is NO! Why? Rude behaviour by the human! They do not want to smell you!

and this makes your approach scarier. Let’s break this myth of greeting dogs this way, It is unsafe!

if the dog doesn’t step into your space and make some sort of contact do not greet! Best practice is to ignore, and let the dog come to you on their own! This is not the way to make friends. This myth has been around for decades. This information is inaccurate, outdated, and a good way to get bitten. When offering your hand, you bend over, and invade the dog’s space,
