ThePresident’sLetter Another year has passed as we usher in the New Year 2017! On behalf of the board of directors, we would like to wish our entire PWD community a year of health and many blessings. Once again, we have lots of great activities planned for 2017 both on the land and on the water. Look to the next Waterlog for details on dates and registration. Many thanks to our volunteers who make these events possible. We continue to work diligently educating the public regarding responsible breeding practices as well as developing a comprehensive CKC Judge’s Education program. Details regarding this will be provided in the next Waterlog including launch dates and roll out processes for this project. Danik Dancause has graciously offered to help us with this, as well as Karine Simard, Roslyn Eskind and Deirdre Hall. We also continue to promote membership and encourage all breeders to use the Puppy Introductory Program which is available to all puppy buyers of PWDCC member breeders. The program is available for a cost of $1.00 per puppy. Please see the website under membership

for details. This program provides a one year membership to the club. It accomplishes two goals: it connects the new puppy buyer to our PWD community and also it helps to increase and promote our membership which is essential for the future success of our club. Breeders… please support our club!! It is the key to our future success. The board continues to be responsive to new ideas and projects so please put your ideas forward in 2017. Working Through the Winter

Now that the winter is here we spend less and less time working outside with our PWDs. Although there are many performance events which take place indoors that we can participate in throughout the cooler months, there is plenty that we can do to get our dogs extra prepared for when the ice melts, the trees start to blossom, and the water is ready for us, yet again! Here are some suggestions of how you can prepare your pup for water work through the winter. EXERCISE 1: RETRIEVE TO HAND

Command Use and Sequence:

PLATNIUM REGISTER OF MERIT

The PWDCA Register of Merit (ROM) program is an acknowledgment of outstanding working ability and versatility in the Portuguese Water Dog. It consists of four levels: the first level is the Bronze Register of Merit (BROM); the second level is the Silver Register of Merit (SROM); the third level is the Gold Register of Merit (GROM); the fourth level is the Platinum Register of Merit (PROM). PROM: The Platinum Register of Merit recognizes the truly versatile dog. To be eligible for the Platinum Register of Merit, a dog must have earned at least ten titles/awards from five different areas of competition: four of which must be PWDCA water titles (e.g., CWDX), and two of which must be awards. Quinta is HIT Can Ch Eauchien's Quinta TD CD AgI AgIJ; CDX RE OF AX AXJ CWDX. She is bred and owned by Tammy Hibberson and Leslie McCracken, and partners with Tammy. The HITs were the second award Quinta needed for Platinum (the first was Superdog 2015).

Superdog Superdog is a very special honor awarded at the end of the National Specialty. This honor recognizes overall versatility of the Portuguese Water Dog by requiring participation in a variety of events. It rewards capabilities and efforts of the individual PWD who competes in three or more events and accumulates the most overall points for placements and qualifying performance.

To be eligible for Superdog, dogs must be entered and compete in at least three of the six area of competition: Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Water, Rally, and Tracking (if offered). The scoring system allows dogs at all levels to compete and be recognized for their achievements and their versatility.

Blood Titers Steer Clear of This Admired Vet Protocol – Follow This 'LA Example' Instead By Dr. Karen Becker Recently I ran across two veterinary industry journal articles on vaccine titer tests that were a study in contrasts. The first article was headlined “Tough talks on titers” and echoed the traditional veterinary viewpoint on antibody titer tests: “If a titer is low for a particular virus or bacteria, we can’t be certain that pet is actually immune.” So most veterinarians recommend boostering vaccination if a titer is low. Titers can have a place in veterinary medicine. However, we tell clients that they can be challenging to interpret, and the rewards of boostering a vaccination outweigh the risks. Needless to say, I absolutely do not agree that over-vaccinating is preferable to accepting a low titer as evidence an animal is protected against disease – more about that in a bit. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with titer tests, they’re blood samples that measure a pet’s level of antibodies against infectious agents such as the distemper virus, parvovirus, hepatitis and others. The presence of antibodies against a disease means the animal is protected from that disease. The antibody level is a reflection of both the animal’s natural exposure to the infectious agent, and the vaccinations he’s received. Conventional Veterinarian Advocates Titers, Not Boosters The second article was refreshingly headlined “Titer talk: An alternative to annual vaccinations.” The subhead was even more encouraging: “Veterinarian advocates testing immune response rather than giving vaccine unnecessarily.” The veterinarian is Dr. Jeff Werber of Century Veterinary Group in Los Angeles. I checked out his website, and while his clinic offers a couple of alternative treatments such as acupuncture and laser therapy, it appears to be primarily a traditional veterinary practice. According to the article, Werber “… questions the necessity of repeated vaccination over the life of an animal when research indicates that at least some vaccines confer longterm immunity.” At his practice, Werber recommends titer testing instead of automatic vaccination. He charges just $50 for a titer test, which is very reasonable compared to what many clinics charge, and if the test shows the pet is unprotected, he gives the vaccination for free. His clients, especially those concerned about over-vaccinating love this approach.

Werber says in the 20 years he’s been titering, he’s never had a pet with a positive titer acquire a disease. Predictably, he gets quite a bit of push back from the traditional veterinary community, but he’s confident, and I am as well, that titer testing errs on the side of patient safety. Because he charges $50 for titer testing and $20 for a vaccination, some of Werber’s colleagues have even accused him of doing it for the money. “But that’s not really what this is about,” he says. “If you recommend what you believe in and treat clients right, they’re going to do what’s best for their pets.” In contrast, I would suggest that conventional veterinarians who try to talk their clients out of titers in favor of giving an unnecessary booster (with a 400 percent-plus markup price tag) could be guilty of just trying to make a quick buck. Yes, titers are much more expensive than a dollar dose of vaccine, but the immunologic protection you’re providing an already-immunized pet could be lifesaving. Here’s hoping Werber’s approach to vaccinating pets catches on with more of his colleagues in the conventional veterinary community. I’m encouraged that his advocacy of titering is featured in a mainstream veterinary industry publication. Vaccination ‘Expiration Dates’ Certain vaccinations (what we call the “core” vaccines), including those against distemper, parvo and hepatitis in dogs, and panleukopenia in cats, produce sterile immunity. Sterile immunity is long-lasting — a minimum of seven to nine years, to a maximum of lifetime immunity — as measured by titer tests. This means your dog or cat cannot become infected, nor will he shed the virus should he be exposed. It’s important to note that immunization is the outcome of proper vaccination. The act of administering a vaccine doesn’t necessarily mean the animal has been immunized against the disease.

Other types of vaccines (the “non-cores”) do not produce sterile immunity. These include vaccines against Lyme disease, leptospirosis, bordetella and other upper respiratory/kennel cough-type viruses, as well as canine influenza. These vaccines don’t last long — typically seven months to a year. The antibody levels against these diseases, as measured by titer tests, fall off with each successive year. However, in addition to antibodies, animals also have what we call immune memory cells against disease, and they remain for a lifetime. Thanks to these immune memory cells (which cannot be titered for), a low titer against one of the non-core diseases doesn’t necessarily mean the pet is no longer protected. She may still be protected for up to a year or much longer by immune memory cells. We can reasonably compare the dog and cat core vaccines to the human polio vaccine, or even vaccines against measles, mumps and rubella (the MMR vaccine), which provide lifetime immunity. Non-core veterinary vaccines can be compared to the human tetanus vaccine, which may not last for a lifetime. The Question of Low Titers, and My Recommendations As the first article I quoted demonstrates, most conventional veterinarians recommend boostering (re-vaccinating) when any titer test for any disease returns a low result. Admittedly titer test results can be confusing to interpret, but this is not the approach of most vaccine experts or holistic/integrative veterinarians (including me). Veterinary vaccine expert Dr. Jean Dodds, who owns Hemolife, a veterinary diagnostic lab, uses the ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) antibody titer test. If she gets a negative on a test, she sends the sample out for an IFA (immunofluorescence antibody) confirmation test. She provides both sets of test results to the animal’s veterinarian so he or she can use professional judgment and case history to decide whether or not to re-vaccinate. Dodds discourages veterinarians from giving combination vaccines and instead recommends single-agent vaccines, which are significantly less stressful to the body immunologically.

If, for example, a gold standard test for distemper returns a level as low as 4 or as high as 64, it means the animal's immune system has developed antibodies. It is primed. If the dog is exposed to distemper and the virus isn't immediately neutralized, there will be a secondary memory response and he will be protected. Some labs recommend re-vaccination when a titer is present, but low. This is not what Schultz recommends, nor do I. If a titer test for immunity against a core disease shows any level of antibodies present, I consider the animal protected and I do not re-vaccinate. If the titer test is negative, I give a single-agent booster for only the disease for which there are no measureable antibodies. I don’t recommend non-core vaccines because they’re often not all that effective, nor long-lasting, and in many cases they’re not even necessary depending on where the pet lives and his or her lifestyle. Next issue will be out shortly with Specialty and Water trials. Breeders List Executive has received feedback from several members that people are wanting a breeders list once again. An application/form should be available on PWDCC website, all health testing will be required to submit. It was agreed that his is the only way to keep a breeders list going that has integrity. No decision was made regarding re-instituting the breeder’s list. Breeders are encouraged to use the available puppies list for more visibility through the club to the public. National Specialty Nothing new to report will have final expense report ready for next meeting. Ontario Club Pat Vokes thanked Sharon for the donation of towels for the Ontario Water Trial. Current Business We would like to propose an online seminar available in both languages that can be made available to judges. Danik has agreed to participate and help. Roslyn and Sharon will be in Montreal to shoot video on November 20th. Membership Steering Committee To be tabled until November New Business Planning for future board members will be required as Pat Vokes will be finishing her 3rd term in 2018 and will not be able to run again. Sharon will also be finished as President.

2018 National Specialty Committee is working on locations for the Specialty with possibilities of using the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Dog show located in Long Sault, Ont which is held Aug. 24, 25, 26, 27, 2018. A picture of beach area was submitted for the executive to review. The park has given approval to use the beach for a water trial, which would be adjacent to the area used for confirmation. Information has already been sent to PWDCC Water Trial committee and they are reviewing. Catherine Gadd has offered to be Water Trial chair for the 2018 Specialty and Mary Kay Schroeder has offered to judge. Judging panel to be finalized in December, 2016. The Committee will aim to be cost effective for this Specialty. Proposed dates for the 2018 Specialty are: Saturday, August 25, 2018 for the Water Trial, and Sunday, August 26, 2018 for the Specialty. We will also hold Judges education at the Water Trial site complete with lunch and a water demonstration for all attending judges. Current Business Membership Renewal/ Steering Committee We need to get this committee up and running, to focus on contacting breeders and using the puppy membership.

New Business Alberta Water Trial Relationship with the PWDCC National Club, looking on guidance on how this actually works. Because the trials are run in Alberta most of the volunteers are from Alberta and are also APWDC club members. Due to this, we would like items to go through Alberta club for first budget approval, with final approval by the PWDCC. Discussion was held regarding having the Water Trials operate the same as hosting a Regional Specialty on a financial aspect.

Carolynne Issa from Ontario has offered to volunteer with this.

More discussion will be held with the Alberta Club before making a motion moving forward.

Online Judges seminar Everything is booked for November 20th at the Blue River Canine Center. Room is rented for the video shoot. Danik Dancause will do the demonstration, video equipment has been rented.

Ontario Merchandising Carolynne Issa and Frances Berman attended a meeting with proposal of merchandising items for the Ontario club.

We found someone to edit final video and put headers on and our web person has agreed to upload it to the PWDCC website. Judges will be able to log in to website with a password. A budget of $2,126.00 is submitted for review to executive. Motion by Patti McDonald to approve the event and the budget. Deirdre Hall seconded the motion. Approved. 2018 National Specialty Potential names for Sweeps Judges include: Lana Benton (Woodburn) Del Sur PWD’s, Martha ThomasOdysea PWD’s (Colorado) and Cindy O’Connor of Querida's PWD’s – (Connecticut) who has done a lot of work with Repro research. Names are left for review by Executive and a decision will be made in January for Sweeps judge.

They are seeking approval to purchase a minimum order of 48 pieces within different styles of “stock orders” or personal items that could be shipped directly to an individual. Sharon recommended doing a mass email prior to placing an order, of what – and when we will be ordering, to help give members an idea of items to be available. The possibility was discussed of making a few orders per year to make items available more often. Carolynne and Frances will crunch some numbers and provide an estimated budget to the executive to possibly move forward with. An article will be created to submit for an advertisement in The Waterlog. Next meeting scheduled for December 6th at 8:00pm EST.

Mary-Kay Schroeder has agreed to do our Water Trial in 2018 with PWDCC National, this should be reviewed by the Water Trial committee to vote in January. Some concerns were raised regarding the site, but Sharon will double check venue before moving forward.

Water trial hosted with the Specialty occurred a profit of $432.69. Ontario Water Trial in August had a profit of $706.90 – this was a 2 1/2day trial.
