1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? I think that I have developed a degree of writing skills throughout this module, but I’m not exactly that sure on how well I’ve applied these skills – I think that my tasks were well executed, however I think that my final essay would have been a lot stronger if I had picked a different subject to write about, as I found it difficult to find relevant or strong information on my topic that I could analyse and triangulate. When it came to the practical, I learnt how to work at a larger scale for my A2 posters, as I don’t usually work at such large scales. I also learnt a lot more about layout and the use of baseline grids within InDesign and how to work with French folding. I also found that setting up my own little photography studio at home was helpful, as it meant that I could photograph my final publication to show how it would work in context.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? I have approached the design production in a similar way to how I usually would approach designing a publication, but I had to take in a lot of different considerations – I had to consider the gap left in the middle of the publication so that the method of binding that I chose wouldn’t obstruct the view of the content of the book. I also had to consider how I would print the book, because of the French folding method that I chose to use.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? I have identified that I have strength in coming up with an interesting concept for my practical piece. I struggled for quite a while with coming up with an idea for my practical, but I am really pleased with this final outcome and it worked out a lot better than I initially expected it to. I have also found that I am quite good at the study tasks that we are set, and never really find myself struggling to write something. This has annoyed me with my final essay, as I definitely don’t feel as though I have produced something of a standard that I can be pleased with, or what I’m capable of.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
