Welcome to our summer edition of our newsletter! I know that I speak not only for myself but for the other PGM Program Team Members when I say how very proud we all are of you and the job you are doing at various sites in the golf business! NEW PGA CURRICULUM CHANGES

By Dr. Paul Miller Academic Advisor Beginning in August 2011, new PGA Golf Management students will be the first to go through version 2.0 of the PGA/PGM training program.

There are a number of improvements and we think it’s going to work out better.

The most obvious difference is that the same sort of Checkpoints will no longer occur. Instead of those three

comprehensive exams, the students will take four series of exams at the Qualifying Level, and then Levels One, Two, and Three. (cont. on page 3)

Hello PGMers, This has been one exciting year for the PGA Golf Management Program at UCCS. We have had so much positive growth within the program this year that you might think we were on steroids. Everything from exceptional guest speakers and internships sites to additions in the swing lab has launched the reputation of our program to the top. Some of our internships sites this year include Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pinehurst Resort, and the Hank Haney and Jim Mclean Golf Academies. With students on internship all over the country, we are really able to get our name out there and build our reputation. With this recognition we have been able to bring in some outstanding guest speakers. One of these was Jim Keegan, a consultant

November – Guest Speaker John Hagen who is close friends with Jack Nicklaus and many other tour players. John also purchased the St. Andrews Old Course Starters box the day before 9/11/2001 and told us all about how that purchase came about.

February- 7 UCCS PGM Alumni in the area were our guest speakers for the monthly PGMSS meeting.

They shared their wisdom and acquired on the job knowledge with our students.

It was a very informative and interesting session that alumni, students, and program team all enjoyed.

March – our PGM along with the COB Ethics Initiative hosted the first ever Eaton Corp. - Ethics Lecture Series event attended by 40+ PGM students and 130 people overall. The guest speakers were the Director of Ethics at Eaton and a leading Golf Pride Grip sales manager who I met while attending the Jones Cup in Florida in

October.

April – Career enhancement bus ride to Denver to visit Sport Haley and Imperial Headwear Companies where we were treated to a complete tour of their facilities and lunch at Imperial. Also, we had our semester team event at Walking Stick GC in Pueblo, CO. A great course on a nice day!

May – Annual Family and Friends event at Kissing Camels/Garden of the Gods Club. We had another full field of golfers and over 150 for the awards luncheon.

National PGA Junior Golf

Leader Ann Finke was our guest speaker who sent an inspiring message out to our students. $18,000 in student awards and scholarships were presented at the banquet!

In closing, I wish all of you a very happy, healthy and successful 2011 golf season.

MILLER, CONT. (Cont. from page 1) What’s going to be really different is that exams will be administered online immediately after the topic is studied in class, which should produce far higher pass rates and much less stress. The Qualifying Level exams cover the basics, including rules, PGA constitution, and professional development.

This series will be completed in the first two-thirds of the students’ first semester. The Level One exams will then be administered in the last part of the fall semester and throughout the spring.

Thereafter, students will take exams for Level Two and Three in the succeeding two spring semesters.

We have responded by changing the PGMT classes, primarily by converting all of them to two hours, but we also added three new ones and dropped one. PGMT 1000 will become 1002, 1010 turns into 1012, 1020 will no longer be taught, and 2000 and 3000 will become 2002 and 3002.

PGMSS CONT, (cont. from page 2) were invited to a Student Leadership Conference in Florida in April. Along with 38 other PGM students, we learned about the importance of leadership not only within the program, but in the workplace. Our Swing Lab has seen many changes this year as well. In addition to the Golf Tec Simulator we now have a Golf Achiever Simula-

tor. This allows students to track ball flight and distance, and even play rounds of golf at various famous courses.

We also introduced a K-Vest system that allows students to improve their swings in several key areas. We have added two fitting carts as well, one with Titleist 910 drivers, woods, and hybrids, and the other with Ping irons.

We have also given students easier access to the swing lab

by allowing them to use their student ID cards to swipe in and out during normal Dwire Hall hours. We are very excited about the events and changes of this past year. We hope to continue to grow and evolve to become the best program in the country.

MILLER, CONT. (Cont. from page 3 There will be three new classes: 1202 for Beginning Golf Instruction, 2202 for Intermediate, and 3202 for Advanced. Mollie will teach all three of those and the PGA will send in an examiner to assess the students’ performance.

Although change is virtually always inconvenient, we find that this one holds great promise for creating a better environment for succeeding on the tests. We’re eager to get it started and see how it works. There will be unexpected wrinkles, no doubt, but we will press ahead to make everything work to our students’ advantage!

One more thing: it’s OK to complain that the new students have it easy compared to what you went through!
